THE LAST WISH
Once, there was a star called He who loved another star named She, and was loved in return. They vowed to love each other forever and to stay together until they burn no more. Both were content with their love, and for a long time they lived in happiness.
But as mankind continued to flourish and multiply on Earth, so did the noise in the Heavens. As time passed, it grew louder and more varied, and He could not help but wonder about it.
"They are the voices of humans' hearts. All their yearnings and longings and hidden desires," said one star.
"But why do we hear them?" He asked.
"Because that is what our existence is for. We are meant to listen and make their wishes come true," answered another.
"Don't listen to them or to any of the voices around," She said. "You and I exist only for each other and not for anybody else."
Heeding its beloved's words, He chose to ignore all the murmurs and the sighs. Yet, some time after, He was once again filled with questions when he saw a peculiar thing happening to a neighboring star. Briefly it burst into light before rocketing toward the blue-and-green Earth, never to be seen again.
"It is where the voices are from, and where our kind go to answer them" one star declared.
"But what good is there in leaving the comfort of the Heavens only to plunge into the unknown below and perish?" He asked.
"It is the fulfillment of our purpose. Out of all the voices around, one will ultimately prevail. It will be the clearest one you hear, and it will fill your core with the strong desire to shine brighter. That, my friend, is the awakening of your purpose," explained another.
"And after some time, you will feel what those fallen stars have felt-- the longing to go to where that voice is and turn its wish into reality," the next star added.
"By falling, we get close to the one whose wish we live for, to grant it. By falling, we become the answer to another's prayer. By falling, we fulfill our purpose," said the first star.
Before He could ask further, She said, "Don't listen to them, nor believe in what they say. We decide what our purpose will be, and for us, it's to love each other. I have you and you have me. We are enough for us."
Not wanting to cause any more hurt to its beloved star, He tried not to pay any more attention to the voices. But like the other stars had told him before, one voice started to emerge above the rest, louder and louder until it drowned the rest of the noise.
"I wish I could live for a few years more," murmured the voice. On and on it went, always repeating, and soon a strange feeling sprouted within the star. Like the other stars, He wanted to fall.
"How can I tell She about this? Can I really leave my love to fulfill my purpose?" He could not decide what to do, and felt terribly guilty for even thinking about leaving She alone. Meanwhile, She noticed the change in her beloved star and understood the reason behind it.
"However strong that desire within you is, however loud the voice gets, don't do it," She told the other star. "You promised me, and if you still love me, stay..." She almost begged He, but stopped herself.
"I love you, more than a star is capable of loving another of its kind, always remember that. But we are not supposed to just fall for each other," He replied, its core breaking upon realizing the pain it was causing She.
She felt betrayed, but couldn't find the will to be angry because, deep down, she knew what He said was the truth. "So you've already made a choice," it said quietly.
He had not, but sooner or later he knew he would have to. And to keep She from hurting more, He let the other star believe what it already thought.
Time went on; more stars continued to run after their purpose. And two stars, once happy and content together, continued drifting apart because of the voice, now sounding weaker and more desperate.
"What is the best thing to do?" He kept asking, knowing that time was running out.
"Heal me and let me live-- please..." the voice went on, at the same time as He said to She, "I love you, my beautiful star. Thank you for everything."
-------------------------------------------
The little boy, alone in his bed, gazed at the sky, the constant beep from the machine beside his bed keeping him company in the dead of night. Emaciated and weak, he didn't mind the cold air creeping through the window of his room in the hospital. It was more bearable compared to the pain that wracked his body.
"There's a terrible monster inside your body, love," his mother had told him before, "and the doctors are doing their best to make it go away so that you can be healthy again."
But that was months ago, and until that moment, the monster was still inside him, making him weaker and his momma sadder each day. He didn't want to see her crying because of him; he wished he could make the monster finally go away.
His eyes found the star, the same one to which he had been making the same wish for some time. But tonight it seemed brighter than before-- or did he just imagine it? He closed his eyes and whispered breathlessly, "Heal me and let me live-- please..."
Just a moment after the wish had been spoken, two things happened at the same time: the little boy stopped breathing, and another star fell to Earth.

Near drowning.
Barely keeping my head above the water. More often than not, I go under. And while I'm there It's always tempting to stay Because I don't feel like there's any other way.

STARRY, STARRY NIGHT
In Van Gogh's eyes, it was a beautiful sight
That he had to pick up his canvass and brush
To capture every spark, every light, and the lush
Of the beautiful starry, starry night.
But for someone born with useless pair of eyes,
Every spark, every light, and the lush are the same;
The colors of the starry night he sees has one name—
Black - always it will be, until the day he dies.

A STORY OF SELF-LOVE
She planted a seed and nourished it with the water from other people's well. From the seed soon sprouted a rose seedling, and after some time, the little flower started to form and bloom out of it. She watered it with more passion and vigor.
"This is enough. As long as I have their water, my rose will grow and flourish," she often thought as she watered her plant. But soon the water stopped coming. The watering can dried up; not even a single tiny drop was left. "What will happen to my rose now?" she wondered as panic set in, leaving a tightening feeling in her chest.
She chased the people whose water she depended on, pleaded with them to give her more, but they turned her down and walked away instead, abandoning her. "Why won't they help me anymore?" she asked herself, eyes stinging with unshed tears. She tried looking for other water sources, but they were either salty or dirty and impure and made her little plant wither more. Desperation clutched her entire being. "Is no one there to help me?"
Helpless and defeated, she watched as her cherished plant wilted and shriveled as days passed. One by one, the petals that were once red turned brown and dropped to the parched soil. There was nothing she could do but cry. "I'm so sorry," she whispered to her dying plant, "I failed you."
And so she cried, and she cried, and she cried for her dying plant, until her tears formed a small flood that wetted the ground and fed the thirsty roots of the rose. As if by a miracle, Life breathed itself into the plant once more, restoring its beauty and splendour.
The girl's rose continued to thrive with her tears, and soon she discovered the well within her, filled with the purest water. "How could I not see this before?" she marveled. She used this water to nourish her plant, and soon, more and more flowers sprang out until they grew into a beautiful rose garden.
"I am already enough," she told herself, feeling stronger and more at peace. "Everything I need is within me."

THE LOVE NOT MEANT
Two roads converged in an em'rald wood,
And two souls, wayfaring sep'rate trails
Found each other- strangers- where they stood;
Wary they were, unsure if they should
Ignore the other or exchange tales.
But having walked the yonder alone
Made their hearts long for some company.
A bond then sown, and grew, strong as bone
'Til a feeling bloomed, one they'd sure known
As they went further on their journey.
And just when Love began to blossom,
Ahead the road's diverging once more;
Now their hearts were at a conundrum
As their parting loomed like a phantom,
Racking them down to their very core.
"Come with me, and be my love," asked he,
And she'd have, if not for the red thread
'Round her finger, and on his; only
Theirs didn't join, but apart- they see
Threads diverging like the roads ahead.
I shall be telling this with a sigh,
Somewhere, some time, two strangers found love
That wasn't meant, so they bid good bye
And took sep'rate roads, though hearts awry
T'wards their fates, destined by Him above.

AFTER X
Oh, what a torture!
To want to die, and still have
Your traitorous heart beating.
To drown, and yet keep breathing—
Feeling the pain with every gasp.
To pray never to wake up from sleep
Only to rise again,
Still aching...
Still living
Through an endless day.
To remember the warmth, the joy, the love
And know that is all left to do
Because she's not coming back...
She won't... She never will.
---------------------------
Him: I miss you. I want to be with you again.
Her: I know, and I do too. But we can't, not yet.
Him: Let me follow you now. The pain's too much... I can't bear it- being without you.
Her: (touching his chest) I'll always be here. Always.
Him: Don't leave me again... please.
Her: I can't be here anymore. I have to move on. (smiles softly) But until the day comes when we can be together again, promise me you'll live. Find happiness again... for me.
He hugged her tight, not wanting to let go. This would be the last time, he so knew. No more after, she'd never visit again in his sleep.
------------
Oh what a torture!
To crave Death so bad
And still have your broken heart
Beating... beating... beating.

FIN
I dreamt about you last night–
The first in a long while.
It was almost the same as the ones I had before,
Only this time, you did not take my hands
And my heart remained whole when you said
"You can let go now. Be happy again, without me."
---------------------
"I'm letting you go now," I whispered to the wind. "Be happy, wherever you are," I told you with a smile, and walked away from your grave without looking back.

THE SMALL RESTAURANT IN THE FOREST
He was navigating the busy street, briskly crossing one road to another. Uncaring of the noise from both people and the vehicles around, the boy only had a mind on what was inside the small plastic bag dangling from his one hand, and he could not wait to enjoy the treat with his little brother and fill both their stomachs with it.
"He's going to love this," he told himself as he rushed to cross another lane.
But in a snap, as if by magic, the bustling street was gone and he found himself on an unfamiliar road, grassy and gravelly, in the middle of a verdant forest- its gentle murmur a stark contrast to the tumultuous hubbub that both put him to sleep each night and woke him in the morning.
"Where am I?" the boy wondered. "Hello? Is anybody there?" but nobody answered.
He looked around, left and right and behind, but all there was were the lush grass and tall trees and the occasional birds flying here and there. He called out once more, louder, but it was only his own voice and words that answered him back. Frightened and helpless, the boy could not help but cry, and only when he wiped the tears away with his hands did he realize what he lost. "Please, is anyone there who can help me find my way back? I have to be with my little brother; he needs me. Please."
At a distance, somewhere in the midst of the endless forest, wisps of smoke appeared, drifting slowly towards the cloudless cerulean sky. Desperate to find help, the boy walked towards it and found the chimney of a small cabin as its source. The wood-built structure, with its sloping red tin roof, was an unseemly figure in the surrounding greenery, and yet, there was also something enchanting about it that made the boy go nearer until he was at its gaping door. The delicious aroma of food greeted him and made his mouth water.
"Get inside," said a voice from inside the cabin. As if sensing the boy's unease, it added, "Don't be afraid, boy. Come inside and I will serve you with something to eat."
The boy went in and realized that it was a restaurant; yet the tables and chairs were all empty. At the counter stood a petite, old woman. Her gray hairs were tied into a loose bun sitting atop her head, and a lone tooth appeared when she smiled. "Pick a seat, boy. I'll bring you food."
"But I don't have any money. I could not pay you."
"It doesn't matter. You will still eat." And the kindly old woman brought plenty and different kinds of food on his table. They were all food the boy had never tasted and only wished to eat before. He held a piece of fried chicken with one hand and of braised pork meat on the other, and would have started eating when he remembered his little brother. "Can I just take all of this away instead?" he asked the woman. "I would like to share and eat all of these with my brother."
"Your little brother was here not long ago and had already eaten the same food as you are having. So, you eat and not worry about him now," she said, and put slices of ham and bacon and other food on the boy's plate. But his thought was not on the food anymore. "My brother was here? Where is he?"
"You'll see him soon. For now, you must eat."
"What is this place? How did I get here? I can't remember how I got here."
"I will tell you once you have eaten."
"You promise?"
"I promise," assured the old woman, and only then did the boy started eating. Coyly at first, but the flavorful foods and his hunger took away his reservation and he ate and ate until he could eat no more.
Once full, the old woman stayed true to her words and told him everything. Now with understanding, the boy asked the kind mistress of the cabin to take him to his little brother, of which she obliged. She led him to a clearing a short distance from the small cabin in the forest. It was filled with countless of rectangular pits, and inside lay people fast asleep. The old woman stopped at a slightly smaller pit, and the boy saw his little brother in, his eyes closed. After thanking her for everything, he went down the pit, lay beside his little brother, and hugging him, closed his eyes forever.
---------------------------------------------
The plastic bag was torn open when it hit the road, spilling the pancit it contained, beside the lifeless body of the boy who was hit by a vehicle. Just a few meters away, the body of a five-year-old boy lying on the sidewalk would soon be discovered, once sick and now gone, waiting for his beloved brother until his last breath.

THE THING HE WANTED
"Tell me what you most want and I will make it happen," the Universe said to her child.
The child, a young man, gave no answer. Instead, he turned towards the mirror and looked quietly at his reflection with empty eyes.
At once, the Universe understood, and so she handed him a key.
---------------------------------
"What did you ask for?" his reflection inquired, the replica key feeling cold and heavy on its hand.
Still, no words came from the man's mouth. But his eyes now shone and the corners of his mouth slightly curled up.
