I think it's fine to dislike Strive for being a high damage, high offence gorilla game with easier combos, that's certainly not for everyone, but I'm actually going to explode if I see another person say "the power level is too high." are you for fucking real. if you're comparing it to, like, street fighter, fine, but if you compare it to XRD and say that I need you to please think critically for one single second

pokemon rant time

this one’s about the 2 new things, and is at least slightly intended for people actually excited/interested in them, click keep reading or perish

Gonna try and keep stuff short cus there's a lot of topics this time and I've already gone off about how pokemon Isn't meant for me or meant to be a good video game anymore, but gamefreak is right back on their bullshit, so I feel I need to at least point it out.

I'd like to preface all this with, if you are a fan of pokemon still, please realize you can ask for more out of this series. Expect perfection, even if you don't think you'll get it anytime soon. Pokemon won't go anywhere, the old games won't go anywhere, and gaming is a hobby, not a necessity; don't accept low quality products from a company just because you feel like you're supposed to.

With this next wave of pokemon games, gamefreak is clearly testing how little they can put in to a $60 game while still keeping the 2 major audiences they've cultivated. By responding to the most obvious and vocal complaints from the community, gamefreak is aiming to make games that seems like what most players want, without having to put in the work on quality products.

GEN 4 REMAKES Pokemon BS (I am not calling this shit BDSP) is intended for the audience that put up with let's go and RS remakes. The most vocal and obvious complaints for these games is their failure as definitive versions of the games they are remakes of, such as missing features/content, or drastically changed story/dialogue/style. In a way, the recent remakes are inferior versions of incredibly old games, which shows a lack of improvement in pokemon as a whole.

To address these issues, BS is very, very, VERY clearly aiming for a more 1-to-1 recreation of the DS games, but with fully 3d graphics. Clearly the map layout has been transferred exactly, and gen 4 already had mostly 3d environments to begin with, and everyone knows about the future-proof pokemon models at this point, so the amount of effort required to create something like this is absolutely minimal. Assuming dialogue, trainer teams, move lists, etc. are also lifted directly from DP, then this game could be developed in basically no time at all, leaving the team time to ensure the product is of decent quality and includes ALL of the content of the originals, if not more, like the earlier pokemon remakes did to ensure they were truly definitive versions of the games. That being said, it is unlikely the team behind BS has been making use of this saved time to improve the game.

One failing already clear is that the quality is not very good, at least graphical quality. The footage we have shows environments lacking in color compared to the original, with messy, unpleasant textures that contrast poorly with the simplistic environments. The characters especially do not work. As cute and fun the fanart of tiny dawn has been, BS dawn and all other characters look awful. They have gorilla arms that reach down to the floor and lifeless faces, as well as incredibly stiff/simplistic animations. As it stands, BS is a visually inferior game to DP, though most consumers will simply see it as 3D>2D without any understanding of what an artstyle is, so this might not be a problem for many, but that doesn't mean you should accept it.

What remains to be seen is what content will be added/missing from pokemon BS. It is very possible that massive parts of the game, such as the underground, variety of online modes, postgame areas, and content from platinum could be missing entirely. We also do not know if pokemon from after gen 4 will be worked into the region, or even supported. Gen 8 still currently does not support a large number of pokemon, and the remakes may continue this limited dex trend.

Even assuming the remake includes everything from the DS games and doesn't add anything that slows down the story or harms the experience, it will still only be an exercise in forced obsolescence. The main reason people can't really play DP still is that the online isn't supported anymore. If BS turns out to be exactly the same as DP, then you're buying the same game for at a higher price, only to play it until the online service goes away again, or the next game comes out, if both don't happen at the same time.

Don't let yourself buy a 13 year old game at twice the original price.

GEN 4 NOT-REMAKE KIND OF NEW THING On to legends now, gamefreak is targeting the people who put up with sun/moon and sword/shield. The obvious problem with those games to most people was simply a lack of change from the standard pokemon formula. Even when changing the gyms to trials or stadiums, most people still understand that the format and story structures are mostly unchanged. Of course, this problem has seemingly been addressed by changing the game structure a fair bit, but almost entirely by removal.

Trainer battles, and by extension, gyms and tournaments/elite 4 have been confirmed to be absent, meaning all battles are only vs single pokemon, in spite of the player likely having a team of 6 pokemon. Even if battle difficulty is increased to compensate (doubtful), this will still drastically increase the simplicity of combat and make it even less likely for the game to include any meaningful challenge. Exploring towns and meeting NPCs is also seemingly missing, as the game is confirmed to have only a single village, which frankly looks incredibly boring and we've yet to see a single NPC inhabiting the village.

Battles now use an ATB format instead of a turn-based format (for those of you who don't know what that means, it basically means nothing, it's still turn based, it just means the speed state determines who gets more turns instead of who goes first, that's it), but beyond that there seems to be no noteworthy changes, pokemon learn 4 moves with limited PP, type advantage will still definitely be the most important aspect to battle, and the player being able to walk around during battle provides no meaningful impact. While the little dash the pokemon do to approach each other is cool, it is already a sign that gamefreak will not be addressing the issue of lacking animations for pokemon battles, as they can't even be assed to animate and program pokemon walking around the environment during combat, and lucario doing 1 kick for a move described as a series of punches isn't a great sign either.

On the topic of lacking animations, the new "pet simulator feature" for legends seems to be an advancement on the ride system from sun/moon, which presumably people missed from sword/shield. Being able to ride on your pokemon to do stuff sounds cool, but in all likelihood, this system will be limited to only a select few pokemon who will each do a select few actions, and is not a reasonable replacement for all the other pet raising features that have been removed in the past. Similar to BS, the total number of pokemon included may also be limited arbitrarily, in spite of the fact that no new pokemon need to be added, as these games are not claiming to be a new generation.

The largest issues I personally have with this new game is the horrible technical quality and gameplay quality shown in the initial trailer. Unfortunately, these types of problems seem to be difficult to explain to the average consumer, even though the issues seem incredibly obvious and inexcusable to people like me.  Most people were able to understand the problem with the berry trees in gen 8, because it was easy to explain, "this tree doesn't look like the other trees, and it sticks out, isn't that weird?", and so gamefreak has eliminated any immediately obvious issues like that, sticking with a very consistent artstyle for legends, making it almost impossible to easily explain its faults to the average pokemon fan.

People have been really quick to compare legends to BoTW; the game that invented grass, trees, and mountains. In spite of these comparisons, nobody seems to point out that legends looks dramatically worse than that almost 5 year old game from the previous generation. Plants are stiff and lacking in energy, draw distances are poor, colors are drab, and textures are messy. Many parts of legends seems to ape BoTW on just the surface, essentially just following market trends. Even the controls seem to follow after modern 3rd person shooters/stealth games, including a seemingly pointless roll and a clunky looking ball lobbing arc that feels unfun before even getting to play it myself.

The largest issue, painfully obvious to some, and impossible to explain to others, is the framerate. The trailer clearly was ran on actual switch hardware, and not prerendered, which would be a good mark for gamefreak if it didn't result in a trailer that never once hit 30fps. Even with empty fields, with only 1 or 2 characters on screen, the game was incapable of meeting the target speed, and had to resort to optimizations like reducing the frame rate of pokemon only inches away from the player to stop-motion levels of choppy. If situations with almost nothing going on result in slow-down, how will the game perform during actual gameplay? Even though slow-down is something everyone can feel, many people aren't capable of identifying it.

The major things to wait and see for legends is if the removed aspects of the series are made up for by some additional systems or content, and definitely wait to see if the performance improves. As with BS, preordering a game like this only shows that gamefreak only has to market the game by saying it's different, not improved, like they've been doing for years now.

TL;DR FUCK GAMEFREAK One major thing of note is that gamefreak is releasing 2 games based on gen 4 at the nearly the same time, meaning they have no obligation to design new pokemon or even include pokemon not from sinnoh, and also that the sales of each game can be used as an indicator for which of their 2 audiences is more loyal to them. Both BS and Legends are in a position to be pushes aside if they fail, but if either succeeds, gamefreak can continue in the direction of the more successful game and reap the benefits, without any need to innovate, improve, or adapt to criticism.

The last thing I feel I have to remind people about is that gamefreak is a company; you don't need to be "grateful" to them. I've seen that word thrown around far too much by people who seem to buy pokemon games like its a tax, and not something they want to do. You don't have to suck up to a company that made games you liked as a kid if the games aren't what you want anymore. Pokemon is so wildly successful that it can't possible die, so don't buy the games out of pity, or out of some feeling of obligation. Buy the video games you want to play and nothing more.

Basically, if you are considering getting any of these new games, please wait until the games are out before purchasing them, and decide for yourself if they are worth your money, and more importantly, your time. Preordering these games only lets gamefreak know their audience will buy and put up with anything. They have no real competition at the moment, so the only thing the audience can do to encourage improvement is show some of restraint.

Milwaukee, WI - 2007

“I think my parents are starting to get suspicious,” Jaida quietly confessed, her gaze downcast to the floor while Nicky sat behind her, braiding her hair.

Nicky frowned, her brows furrowed as she tied off the braid she’d put Jaida’s hair in with a hair elastic. “What is making you say that?” she asked, moving so she was facing the other girl and taking her hands into her own.

She shrugged, fumbling with the hem of her shirt until Nicky’s grasp stilled them. “Just feels like they’re snooping around more, suddenly real interested in my life. And you know they’re always acting weird whenever we’re at my house together. Last time they made us keep the door open, remember?”

“I had assumed that was an American thing,” she confessed. She had only moved to the states a couple of months ago, at the start of her and Jaida’s junior year of high school, and she was still learning how to differentiate cultural differences from people behaving unusually to her specifically.

“You think everything you don’t understand is an American thing,” Jaida rolled her eyes with a fond smile, “though I guess you’re right most of the time,” she conceded.

Nicky shrugged it off, redirecting back to the topic at hand. “But you’re worried they’re going to find out about us and poop will hit the ceiling.”

“Shit will hit the fan,” she corrected, then sighed. “I mean, think about it — my mom’s a Sunday school teacher and my dad’s the son of a preacher, they take ‘traditional family values’ very seriously. And I don’t know how things are in France but there’s nothing traditional about this,” she explained, gesturing between the two of them.

She frowned, her brows knitting together. “But we are happy together, surely once we graduate, we can—”

“It’s not that simple, Nicky!” Jaida tossed her head back and groaned. “I love you, but in a place like this, sometimes love just ain’t enough.”

And maybe it was denial, or maybe it was blind optimism, but Nicky had refused to take that answer lying down. She fought for Jaida and fought even harder to keep the relationship away from her disapproving parents. For a while, it seemed to be working, they had their beautiful, fleeting moments that let them believe that everything would be okay.

It was the first day back after spring break and Nicky immediately noticed a change in her girlfriend. It was like the life and light had been drained from her like she was only present physically. And despite the warm weather, she was dressed for late fall. She rushed towards her, taking her hand. “Ma chérie, what’s wrong? You look so unwell.”

Jaida hesitated before pulling her hand away. “I can’t hang around you anymore,” she replied. “Though I’m not gonna see anyone around here for a while starting real soon,” she mumbled.

“What do you mean?”

“My parents found out, Nicky,” she choked out, forcing back a sob, “and they were mad, I ain’t never seen them so mad. They’re sending me to military school… well, they gave me a choice between that and conversion therapy… seemed like the better option.”

Nicky bit down on her quivering lip. “But you can find me when you are done, right?” She reached out to her again, but Jaida backed away to step out of her grasp.

“I can’t. Besides, you won’t want me anyway, I won’t be the same person.”

She tried to grab for her once more, desperate to keep her, looking at her with watery, pleading eyes. “Jaida, I can’t—”

“Please,” she sniffled, “don’t make this harder than it’s already gonna be.”

And perhaps Nicky should have let it go, accepted losing her first love, and moving on with her life. Sure, she would eventually. She would move around for school, for work, meeting many beautiful women along the way, but none of that happened until she made sure Jaida’s parents experienced at least a fraction of the hurt they had caused the both of them.

Her plan had been elaborate and convoluted and would require a heavy amount of stealth work and computer literacy to pull off. But as it turned out, her plan of convincing the two parents that the other was cheating on them was quite easy when her snooping unearthed the fact that both of them already were. All she needed to do was bring it to light.

Present Day

“When you think about it,” Nicky mused, “I did them a favor. There are worse ways they could’ve found out than having an envelope full of proof dropped off at your workplace. At least no one made a scene… as far as I know, at least.”

“Does Jaida know?” Rosé asked. “Now that you guys have reconnected, have you caught her up to speed? Because it seems like something you should tell her.”

Nicky winced and looked away. “It… has not come up yet,” she murmured. “There is no easy way to inform someone that you were the catalyst in their parent’s divorce. Unless you have a way, in which case, feel free to share with the class.”

She shrugged, putting her hands up in surrender. “I got nothing, but my point remains. It’s gonna bite you in the ass badly if you wait too long to say anything.” When Nicky shrugged it off, she decided to move on. “What about you, Bubbles?” she asked, looking towards Jan, “what sort of scathing revenge does someone as bouncy as you come up with?”

Jan pressed her lips into a fine line, holding back what was either a smile or a grimace. “Well, this also happened in high school, an all-girl Catholic school, of course…”

Old Bridge, NJ - 2009

Jan was nothing if not brave. Coming out in tenth grade, especially considering the environment she was in, was a choice that couldn’t be taken lightly. While she had the support of her family and closest friends, the school environment had been a different story.

“Janice, could you stay back for a moment?” her math teacher, a conventionally attractive man in his early thirties, prompted as the final bell rang.

With math being her weakest subject, Jan was instantly concerned and nodded. “Of course, sir. Is something wrong?” she asked as she walked over to his desk.

“I think something is very wrong,” he replied as he got up. “Janice, I am highly concerned with your mental wellbeing.” He stopped in front of her, cupping her face with both hands. “You’re such a bright, beautiful girl. It would be such a shame for you to throw that away because you’ve chosen to shun God and live in sin.”

Jan felt her heart drop into the pit of her stomach and her throat tighten. This was inevitable, but that didn’t make it any easier to bear. She started shaking her head. “N-No, I’m… I’m not, I—”

“Shh…” he pressed his thumb to her lips to quiet her, then swiped it across her bottom lip. “Part of being a good Christian is overcoming temptation. And that’s what you want, isn’t it? Isn’t it what your parents want for you?” His hands move to her shoulders, squeezing them gently. “God gave you this body to lay with a man, you just need to be put in the right direction before it’s too late. I could help you, I could save you.”

Jan felt sick to her stomach. She hated every moment of the interaction; she hated the feeling of his hands on her, the way he was leering at her body, undressing her with his eyes. But at the same time, it was hard to lean into that hate, because he did pick on every insecurity she had in regards to her faith. But her sense of self won out and she was able to free herself of his grasp and run out of the room as fast as her legs would take her.

Any shame or guilt she might have felt was quickly replaced by anger and a desire to stop the man that tried to rob her of her innocence from harming anyone else. But she was still cautious, she knew there was a risk of retaliation if she spoke out alone, that was when her plan formed.

She created a fake Facebook account of a fifteen-year-old girl who was ‘planning on transferring to her school’. That was why she messaged the teacher, and after a few days of exchanging messages, ‘Samantha’ had agreed to meet up with him, the conversation in no uncertain terms making his intent clear.

Now, the obvious path from there would have been to go to the police, but that wasn’t good enough for Jan. Instead, she went to her godfather, who had promised he’d always help her ‘by any means necessary’. So, it was neither the police nor ‘Samantha’ that met the teacher at the park. Instead, it was two burly men who drove home a rough lesson that he was to turn himself in the next day, lest he face even worse consequences. He’d been given a flash drive with a copy of the whole exchange and was told he had exactly twenty-four hours and that the police would be expecting him.

Of course, those details weren’t in the subsequent news story of the teacher’s arrest. The conviction, however, was disappointing to Jan, as it was only two years and a thousand dollar fine, as well as losing his teaching license and having to register as an offender.

Present Day

“But rest assured, people are keeping an eye on him these days. You know, should he ever try and act up,” Jan explained with a shrug.

Rosé’s mouth was hanging open by the time Jan had finished her story. “So, you put a hit out on a pedo. I mean, shit, color me impressed,” she chuckled softly, then quickly followed up with, “I’m so sorry any of that happened to you, though. I’ve had people in my life try to weaponize religion against me after I came out. It’s never an easy pill to swallow.” She then looked at the group curiously. “Are you all…”

“Mik’s pan but yeah, the rest of us are gay,” Gigi confirmed with a nod. “At first, I thought that’d be the only thing we all have in common, but here we are now.”

“Chosen family is super important,” Mik agreed, “you never know who you can’t trust in your bloodline.”

Rosé quirked her brow. “That what happened to you?”

Scottsdale, AZ - 2015

Mik had been sitting across from his parents in dead silence for the past five minutes. There was no easy way to break it, let alone a correct one. On the coffee table in front of them were printed pictures of screenshots from his private Twitter account, where he presented himself as his true identity, but the precautions he took weren’t enough.

“Kady, sweetheart, I’m sure Uncle Joe brought this to our attention with your best interest at heart,” his mother said in as sweet of a voice as she could muster, which only served to sound fake to her son.

He rolled his eyes. “Oh please, don’t give me that. If it was ‘concern’ he would’ve told you privately. He sent it to the family group chat then told you that, and I quote, ‘your daughter thinks she’s a tranny’,” he struggled to keep his tone even, but he knew he needed to coddle his parents’ feelings if he wanted a chance of being taken seriously.

“I’m sure it just caught him by surprise,” his father offered.

Mik groaned and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Even if he did, he wasn’t treating it like a fun piece of gossip, he hunted down my private account and outed me to humiliate me, and it would mean a lot if you guys had my back on this.”

This brought another wave of silence upon his parents. He couldn’t get a clear read on them, but they seemed stressed, confused, and most painfully, they seemed sad. His mother slowly picked her head back up. “Kady, I—”

“My name is Mik.”

“Listen, honey, you’re going to have to give us some time to adjust,” his dad tried to ease the tension, “you’re still our child, but this isn’t an easy thing to process, your mother especially is mourning the loss of her daughter.”

Mik felt his chest tighten in anger and hurt. “But I’m not—” he got up, shaking his head. “Right, fine,” he mumbled and escaped to the sanctuary of his bedroom. Left alone with his thoughts, the anger he had towards his parents dissipated and the rage shifted solely onto his uncle. After all, this was his fault. He was the one that robbed him of the opportunity to come out on his terms, and with the active intent to cause harm.

The anger didn’t go away over the following weeks. Instead, it built up, it festered inside of him as the summer after high school began. He had downloaded Grindr out of casual curiosity, and it was only a matter of minutes before a profile caught his eye. “No fucking way,” he grinned.

Of course, it was Joe, Mik realized how much of a cliche it was, but that didn’t change the fact that his bigoted uncle that tried to ruin his familial relationships was soliciting male escorts on a gay dating app. The opportunity for revenge essentially fell into his lap. He made a fake account and exchanged messages with him, just enough to get the evidence he needed.

The last step was simple, he dropped the screenshots into the same group text without any comment and removed himself from the group chat right after. He didn’t need to see the chaos unfold, Uncle Joe’s absence from the next family gathering was all he needed.

Present Day

“Just to be clear,” Mik added as he finished the story, “I’m against outing people, for the most part, obviously it should be something done on your terms. But shit, sometimes it’s gotta be an eye for an eye, you know?”

“Wait, I have a question,” Jan chimed in, “is he out now? Do y’all even talk to him anymore?”

He shook his head. “He moved to Alabama, I guess he wanted to go somewhere to double-down on the bigotry. No idea what happened after that. But, you know, good fucking riddance.”

“Amen to that,” Rosé agreed. “I don’t know how you guys have figured out that line of deciding what’s morally sound and what’s ethical enough. It seems to work, but it seems hard.”

“Jackie helped a lot with that,” Jan told her, her face lighting up and her smile broadening as she continued, “she has this pragmatic take on these things while still understanding that there’s so much ambiguity and morally gray areas. She’s honestly the smartest person I’ve ever met.”

Rosé nodded as she listened. “I’m glad you guys have someone like that on your team. How long have you two been dating?”

Jan turned bright red, worsened by the way the rest of the group laughed. “Oh, um, we’re not dating. She and I are… very close friends,” she explained.

“Ah,” the corners of her lips tugged into a smirk, “you’re just fucking, got it,” she observed, causing another eruption of laughter from the others, much to Jan’s chagrin. Once it died down, she redirected her attention to the half of the group that had yet to recall their stories. “Alright, who’s next?”

And for good reason.

A clean slate.

“No.” He shakes his head, “No, it’s not right. Listen, listen to me, Tubbo.” Ranboo grabs Tubbo by the shoulders, the optimal way to get the teen to listen, especially when he’s being stubborn. “You have to let him move through grief on his own. You can’t force it. You- you can’t-” Ranboo’s voice breaks, and Tubbo’s face softens, giving the taller a firm hug.

“Boo? Bo? Is everything okay?” Michael had snuck up on them. Tubbo and Ranboo share a look, before Ranboo forces a chuckle, picking his ‘son’ up to give him a hug.

“Hey Bub. Everythings just fine.” Ranboo assures the child, giving him a tight hug. Michael feels tears on his dad’s face, and pulls away from the hug. He watches his fathers face, contemplating. He giggles all of a sudden, putting his small hands on Ranboo’s cheeks, feeling him give a small smile, tears still streaming down his face.

“Dad!” Michael smiles. “I love you.” Ranboo smiles, pulling all three into a hug. After a beat, they separate, and Ranboo let's Michael down on the floor, urging him to go play and let the other two talk.

The tears are still there.

He does a good job of hiding the pain.

The two most important people in his life were distraught and trying so hard to hide it.

The more he listened, the more he learned. ‘Their close friend Tommy was grieving. They had all lost a friend. Their friend named Wilbur. He was a bad man, but he had been a good friend. He killed people. He-’

“So did I. Doesn’t make anyone special.” Someone says from behind where Michael is sitting. He looks around.

“Wh- who- who said th- that?” He manages to force out, There is a chuckle to his left, the voice sending shivers up his spine. There was something not right about it, it was off. Something moves, and a humanoid becomes visible. They are transparent, but their hands are burnt black, covered in ashes.

“Michael, right?” They ask, floating closer, eerily. Michael nods, recoiling when they offer a handshake. “Hmm,” They look Michael up and down, evaluating, analyzing. “You know, it feels good to be back.” Michael takes another good look. At first glance, they seem completely normal, at least before they speak. But then you look closer. You see the burn marks, and the ash, and the blood.

‘Why is there so much blood?’

“Well that has an easy answer! You should really be asking harder questions, Michael.” They laugh. It’s terrifying. “The blood is from the veins of the bodies dead at my feet, piling higher and higher. The blood of innocent people always was sweeter than that of the guilty.” And that's when the person moves, floating towards Ranboo and Tubbo. They don’t seem to notice. Michael gasps, and they look back at him, tilting their head and giving a smile. Without warning there is a dagger in each hand, at his parents' necks.

They don’t seem to mind.

Without thinking, Michael screams. It’s loud and heart-shattering. It’s like he was witnessing murder. Ranboo and Tubbo stop talking, running over to comfort the child. The person doesn’t move, just smiles.

“It was nice to meet me, right Michael? I would say the same in your own regard, but I’ve been watching for a long time. See you soon.”

And they disappear.

That was only the beginning.

The next time they showed up, Michael was all alone. Ranboo and Tubbo had to leave, had ‘something to do’. Tommy had come and collected them late at night, right as Michael had gone to bed, this being one of the nights that Michael was staying in the Tower. Bad had helped him get ready for bed, making sure he had his chicken plush before saying goodnight and leaving, promising that Tubbo and Ranboo would be back by morning.

Michael knew the truth, that the two people who meant the most to him were most likely in danger at that very moment. He might be young, but he wasn’t stupid. In fact, he was turning 6 soon!!! Hopefully Tubbo and Ranboo would be back soon, Michael desperately wanted to go to the park tomorrow.

“Can’t go to the park if they're dead.”

Michael pales at the voice. It’s back. ‘Why is it back?’ A bone-chilling laugh.

“Why Michael, your fear summoned me. There really is quite a lot of it. Fear of abandonment, fear of death, fear of losing a loved one, fear of being alone.” They chuckle, picking up one of Michaels toys, tossing it around as a form of entertainment, as if scaring a child wasn’t enough. “I really just saved you from that one, huh? No matter, you’re terrified of me, and that gives me all the power I could want, not that that’s what I’m after.” Michael looks at them, thinking.

‘Who is this? How did they get in here? Where are Boo and Bo? I really want them now, so I can have a hug and a brownie from the Titans kitchen. I want-’

“Hmmmm, that really is a very specific request Michael. But, you did ask one good question. Who am I? Who do you think I am Michael?”

He freezes, trying to think of what to call the person floating in front of him. After a moment, he gives up saying,

“You’re a scary man.” The person laughs.

“Well not quite, Michael, but close. I am Hayden Eyens. A hunter, a ghost, a storyteller, a prisoner, a witch, and, above all, a murderer. As for how I got in here, I can get to wherever I want or need to be.” Michael curls up against the headboard of the bed, not completely understanding everything that the person- no, Hayden- had said. But he did understand one thing.

Murderer.

It’s what everyone calls Wilbur.

“Let that sit with you Michael. I hope we talk again soon.” Hayden fades away, laughing maniacally.

Michael doesn’t sleep that night.

It doesn’t end there.

Hayden shows up at the worst times, feeding off of the fear that Michael hates so much. Every once in a while, Hayden’s visits are nice, and they just talk, and Michael learns, listening to the stories told so colourfully that it was like looking at a painting. He learns about how Hayden had grown up, having a similar start in life to Michael. Loving parents who were no longer there for one reason or another, eventually leading to the ghosts' untimely demise at the hands of the village they had grown up in. Michael listens to Hayden talk about manipulation and murder. It’s not very nice to listen to, but it is preferable to the bad days.

The bad days are the days where Hayden manipulates him, messing with his mind and his sense of right and wrong. The days when Hayden possesses him, trapping his conscious inside of himself, making him claustrophobic and terrified of possession.

It makes him think of the accident. What had happened when Michael had gotten very hurt by a bad man, and he had been stuck where he couldn’t get away, couldn’t escape. Once, Hayden had explained how the possession worked.

“Your conscious is the lesser one, of course. My mind pokes and prods and searches until it finds a way in. And when it does-” They smile. “When it does, my mind takes control. And it forces your mind into a tiny, tiny box. It is so refreshing. An escape from my own guilt.” Before Michael could even ask what they felt guilty for, Hayden was gone again, sure to return soon enough.

It went on for a long time, day in and day out, never subsiding long enough for a true break or recovery. The manipulation and the fear and the claustrophobia grow worse, almost to the point where Michael often couldn’t be left alone in some rooms in Bo’s house, Uncle Tommy’s house, or even the Titan’s Tower.

And one day, out of the blue, Hayden disappeared. The most peculiar thing happened as well, for right before Hayden had disappeared, Bo and Boo had seen them. They had flown at the trio at the Bee n’ Boo late one night, and they had freaked out. That was why Michael freaked out as well. Not because a ghost had flown at him, for he was used to that already, but seeing his favourite people freak out.

Later, Michael heard Ranboo and Tubbo talking. Apparently, there were more people like Hayden, though they weren’t all bad. Tanboo and Tubbo had met them. To repeat what Tubbo had said, it had ‘scared the shit out of them’, whatever that meant.

And that was the end of it.

Or so he believed.

Once a killer, always a killer.

Quick and easy, here is some info about this:

1)This is tied to my fic and that will become somewhat evident in the next update.

2)This takes place during the aftermath of Wilbur's death, before the Askers were introduced to the Titans and the HIVE and such.

3)This was kinda difficult to write, ngl. Michael is very young in this AU, so it is difficult to use complicated themes. Therefore, my solution is that(sticking with what is already canon) Michael was left with Tubbo when he was 3. By the time this takes place, Michael is almost 6. I’d like to think that Tubbo was about 15 or so when he “adopted” Michael, making him 17 or so at this point.

4) I know that the trauma was not super apparent in this, but I feel it is important to establish Michaels trauma and fear of ghosts and Wilbur for my next fic update.

“What’s this about, pretty bird?” Dabi asks, kicking away a stray branch.

It probably wasn’t the best idea to follow the hero so deep into the forest with no back up, but that seems to be something they do as of late. Trust each other. It’s a lot easier than Dabi thought it would be. It sets him on edge, yet exhilarates him at the same time.

It makes him want to burn the bird alive.

“You remember what we talked about yesterday?” Keigo asks, keeping his voice forcibly light.

As if they hadn’t spent all of yesterday crying on Keigo’s cold apartment floor, grieving old wounds that never got the chance to heal.

Dabi tilts his head, and with a sick grin he says, “Here to take me out of my misery, birdie?”

He says it to keep Keigo on his level of uncomfortability, and they both know it. Vulnerability is something Dabi isn’t comfortable with, probably never will be after the life he’s lived. That just makes it mean more to the hero when he tries, but that doesn’t mean he’ll do it nicely.

“Something like that,” Keigo says, to Dabi’s surprise.

Usually when Dabi brings it up, the idea of one of them harming the other, Hawks becomes cold. He doesn’t like speaking in metaphors and what ifs. He never plays along with Dabi’s sick sense of humor, not when it comes to the two of them. It might be endearing, if Dabi wasn’t so fucked emotionally.

He narrows his eyes and Keigo blinks innocently.

“What stupid idea do you have now?” he asks.

Keigo gives him that look . The one where what he has to say is going to hurt, but it’s going to be for Dabi’s own good. He hates that look.

Keigo steps forward and takes Dabi’s face in his hands, and he hates the way him gently running his thumbs under Dabi’s left eye makes his nerves settle even more than he hates the look.

“You told me that you hate feeling like someone is ashamed of you, after your father kept you from public eye and pretends like you don’t exist at all,” Keigo says, and Dabi tries not to wince as his vulnerable moment is shoved back in his face, “and I think I’ve come up with something that will curb that fear in you, when it comes to me. To us.”

“I’m not afraid of anything,” Dabi sneers, but the effect his mean look could’ve had is immediately lost when he melts as Keigo pulls him forward to kiss his brow.

“Of course not,” Keigo chirps, “because they’re nothing to be afraid of, and I’m going to prove it to you.”

Dabi raises an eyebrow in suspicion. “And how, pray tell, do you plan to do that?”

Keigo grins, and leans forward to press his lips to Dabi’s ear. He forces himself to stay still as Keigo’s hands stop their soothing motion, and cup his face with new intentions.

“I’m going to show you off,” he purrs, using his grip on Dabi’s jaw to keep him in place when he nearly yanks back.

“Oh?” Dabi asks, pissed that the idea makes him breathless.

Pissed that he’s excited for whatever it is his bird brain came up with. Pissed that he’s thrilled that Keigo believes him worthy of being shown off.

“Obviously I can’t do it somewhere busy, like the city,” Keigo says, and Dabi tries not to let his heart sink, because it’s stupid. Keigo doesn’t need to say why he can’t, but he does anyways, because he sees the look on Dabi’s face. “For what both of us have planned, it would never work. You’d lose your connections to the heroes, and I’d lose well. My entire life, basically, but I can do it here. Take you to the clouds and fuck you for mother nature herself to see. Would you like that, baby?”

Dabi tries to turn his head to glare at him, because yes obviously he’d like that, but all he achieves is Hawks’ fingers digging deeper into his skin. He opts to whimper instead, because he knows it drives the hero wild.

“Hold on tight,” is the only warning Dabi gets.

Keigo lifts him off of the ground and barely spares a moment to let Dabi get comfortable in his arms before bending his knees and sending them into the air. Dabi’s stomach lurches and he clings onto the hero for all he’s worth.

“A warning would’ve been nice!” he hisses in the bird’s ear.

Keigo just laughs and flaps his wings to take them higher. Dabi squeezes his eyes shut and buries his face in the hero’s neck until he stops hearing the wind rush by. Keigo’s wings find a steady rhythm to keep them mostly in place once he’s satisfied with the height. Dabi keeps his eyes steadily trained just past Keigo’s shoulder, making sure not to look down.

“I’ll catch you if you fall, but if you want this to happen, I need you to be a good boy for me and hold on while I get our pants down, okay?” Keigo says.

Dabi’s fingers curl into the back of Keigo’s shirt at the prospect of being a good boy. Telling Keigo he’s weak in the knees for praise, something that seems so far out of reach for someone that lives the way he does, was the most nerve wracking yet rewarding thing he’s ever done.

Everything nerve wracking Keigo somehow makes worth it, so he holds on tight and lets Keigo undress them the minimum amount for Keigo to make good on his promise.

He can’t imagine how they’d look to onlookers, with Dabi holding onto  Keigo so tightly his knuckles are white, waiting patiently for the praises he so craves as Keigo preps him. He thinks he might get it when Keigo brings his lips to his ear, but it’s just a soft apology for the weird warmth of the lube that had been crammed into one of Keigo’s many pockets.

He digs his fingers in deeper as a reminder, but Keigo still doesn’t say anything close to what Dabi wants from him. It takes a minute of the most awkward shuffling around of limbs Dabi has ever experienced to find a position that works. Ultimately, Dabi ends up with his arms around Keigo’s neck and his legs up around Keigo’s waist for him to line it up right.

“You’re going to have to do most of the work,” Keigo says, kissing Dabi’s neck as an apology.

Dabi accidentally looked down while they were moving around, and it takes a dizzying moment for him to realize what Keigo means. Dabi uses his legs to pull Keigo in, and whimpers at the feeling. The world spins around him as Keigo uses Dabi’s hips to push himself in completely, and Dabi’s body takes it all. Keigo waits until Dabi taps his shoulder twice, his signal to go, before quickly settling into their usual rhythm.

Dabi’s eyes snap open as the realization hits him. They’ve done this enough that they’ve found a rhythm that they like, Keigo cares enough to carry him to the clouds on tired wings just to stamp down some insecurity his father left deep within him.

They weren’t supposed to be like this . It was supposed to be a one time thing, something stupid they’d done when they’d both nearly died in a mission Shigaraki was too impatient to prepare for.

Toga and Twice had nearly died along with them and Dabi had so many emotions running through him he thought might explode. His options at the time were yelling at Shigaraki or riding Keigo’s dick like his life depended on it, and somehow they got here .

They’re miles off of the ground because Dabi can’t stand being someone’s dirty little secret, even if it is optimal for both of their survivals. Keigo listened to him, really heard his words, and found a solution that worked without really giving them away.

Something in Dabi cracks, and he finds himself sniffling against Keigo’s neck, receiving the best dick of his life. The hero doesn’t even say anything, just holds a little tighter, groans a little louder. He mouths at the spot behind Dabi’s ear that sends a spike of heat through his gut, and Dabi moans. “That’s it, good boy,” Keigo finally says, emphasizing it with a particularly rough thrust. Dabi throws his head back with his lips parted, but he can’t muster up any kind of sound to make, too afraid it’d just be a sob. “Cum for me.”

It’s a demand, emphasised by the way Keigo digs his greedy fingers into Dabi’s ass, and his body happily complies. Dabi sinks into the love/hate feeling of being overstimulated as Keigo uses his body to bring himself to completion, and all Dabi can think is he loves me, he loves me, he loves.

Keigo murmurs praises into every inch of Dabi’s skin he can find on their way down to the ground, mostly consisting of the right side of his face, and Dabi feels the safest and most secure he’s ever felt in his life. It’s bitter, to find that sort of comfort and safety he’s supposed to find in family in someone else, but also oh so sweet.

Keigo lands and takes a moment to just hold Dabi, and he’d lie through his teeth if anyone asked, but he takes his time to enjoy it.

When they pull apart, Keigo rests a worried hand on his cheek and says, “Were you crying?”

Dabi forces himself to not jerk back from his hand.

Instead, he smiles slowly and says, “Does this mean I’m technically part of the mile high club now?”

Keigo’s face loses all concern, and he frowns. Dabi knows it’s coming, but does nothing to prevent the feather that traps him against a tree.

“I’ll let you down when you learn how to behave,” Kiego says.

Dabi laughs, but he doesn’t burn away the feathers. Keigo claimed not to be able to feel them, but that’s a bold faced lie. He’s seen the way he winces when the commission breaks spare ones in half, and Dabi won’t do that to him.

Because that’s what they do now. They trust each other to not hurt each other, unless it’s to heal old wounds.

Dabi sighs and leans his head back against the wood. He doesn’t know what or how, but Keigo reached something deep inside him, and let it finally scabbed over.

Fine Tuning the Stock Division

When I learned that my friend needed help setting up his dirt hobby stock car, I jumped at the opportunity. This little project allowed me to apply some of the technology we provide in CT to a car with limited adjustment capability.  Once we got into the car, I was surprised by our discoveries. What we do to this car can also be done to a Street Stock or similar type of car.

The problem with this car that was had built late last season was that it would not turn well and as a result would push on entry and go loose on exit. There are probably a few thousand or more teams in this country that have the same problem. So, I saw an opportunity to jump in there, do an evaluation to try to fix it.

The car is a 1985 Monte Carlo and has the metric four-link rear suspension, a stock frame throughout and must use stock type springs in their original positions. The shocks are mounted in the stock positions and the car has retained all stock suspension parts.

As with most “stock” classes, teams are allowed to trade stock pieces from other model year cars as long as the brand is the same. This class also runs large Hoosier racing tires all around where-as the street stock classes are only allowed one racing tire on the RF.

Breakdown – The first order of business was to weigh the car on the scales and measure and record the ride heights and the spindle heights for future reference. We wanted to maintain the original ride heights after installing new springs so the geometry would be the same and we needed to know the spindle height so we could check for proper clearance and make sure there was no bind of the ball joints while the car was on jack stands.

We then proceeded to break the car down and remove the springs and shocks to see what we had.  To get the front springs out, we had to remove the upper ball joints. This gave us a chance to inspect everything up close. My helper, Kenny Hellyer, was very familiar with the mechanics of these cars and was a definite asset in all of our re-design work.

The first problem we noticed was that the shocks on both sides in the front were rubbing on the inside of the height adjuster that was put into the car not to jack weight, but to create the ride height that was necessary to avoid bottoming out. The rear of the car had legal spring height/weight jacking, adjusting bolts.

The shock contact was so bad that one shock was leaking and both housings were bent severely. These were aftermarket twin tube shocks and still seemed to be working. I tried the standard method of checking them by placing one end on the floor and pushing in from the top. The shocks were so stiff that they barely moved.

I don’t know if someone chose really stiff compression numbers or if the shocks might have been bent, but these units were not helping the situation. On dirt, we must have shocks that will allow the car to run over the holes and bumps and move fairly easily. They must control the springs, but not be so stiff as to cause the tire to skip or bounce.

Front Geometry – I inspected the front geometry and noticed that the car builder had used the taller Impala spindles which reduced the lower control arm angles. He also had lowered the upper control arm mounts to gain more upper control arm angle. Both of these changes are highly recommended for this class. Using taller spindles actually improves both upper and lower arm angles.

The geometry I saw looked a lot like previous cars I have fooled with in the stock classes and I knew the moment center was close to where it needed to be, at or very near the centerline of the car. Had this work not been done, we could have expected the MC to be somewhere outside the car making the front end overly stiff.

Before we disassembled the car, we noted that the upper control arm mount had been lowered by the builder, the steering arms strengthened with add-on pieces and that there was sufficient clearance between the lower control arm and the frame. After we broke it down we found problems.

Kenny measures the spindle height with the car at ride height. We do this so we can position the spindles at the ride height location after we have put the car on jack stands. We then can check for clearances, ball joint binding, steering Ackermann, camber and caster settings and shock shaft position.

By using Impala spindles, you can increase the upper ball joint height and create more upper control arm angle. This is good for creating a more centered location for the moment center. It also reduced camber change on dive and roll in the turns and helps keep a flatter tire contact patch. This then creates a high angle of the ball joint. Make sure on your car that the ball joint shaft does not contact the control arm during upward travel.

The cambers were not what I would have expected or chosen. The LF was a little less than one degree and the RF was around 5 degrees. This is typical of a car that transfers a lot of load to the RF as that tire is forced to carry most of the front load and work hard to turn the car. The LF doesn’t need camber because it isn’t working very hard anyway. We needed to make camber changes to reflect how the front end would work after the redesign.

We reset the cambers to a positive (+) 2.0 on the LF and minus (-) 3.5 at the RF. Once we re-spring the car to allow a more balanced setup, the LF tire will definitely be working harder and take some of the load off of the RF tire. So, we would end up needing more LF camber and less RF camber. Our tire contact patch will be optimal with these changes.

Inspection of the caster settings revealed that the RF caster was in the negative range (upper ball joint forward of the lower ball joint) and the left side was positive. That would cause the steering to want to turn right, maybe good for sliding the car through the turns, but we were going to make this car turn well, so I opted for a different plan.

We moved the right upper ball joint back to create about two degrees of positive caster and that matched the left side caster. This way, the steering would be neutral and the driver could steer both directions without feeling a difference in resistance.

We were a little worried about possible binding of the ball joints with the increased upper control arm angles. So we cycled the spindles beyond what they would see on the track and found we had plenty of clearance. Always check to see if there is any binding or tightness in your suspension while you have the springs and shocks off the car.

We removed the upper ball joints to get the old springs out of the car. This also allowed us to more easily inspect the bushings, both ball joints, as well as make some adjustments to the caster settings and upper shock mounting holes.

Once removed the shocks, we were surprised to see this damage. The car had height spacers installed, a common procedure to create a desired ride height. But with the stock mounting holes in the frame, the shock body is too close to the spacer and on this car the shocks rubbed severely. We even thought the shafts were bent due to the stiffness we saw with the simple task of trying to push them in.

Spring Rates – We next checked out the spring rates that were installed in the car. The fronts were marked as: LF = 1100 lb./in. and the RF was 1200 lb./in.  The front springs had a half round of the coil cut off, so the actual rate, although we did not measure them, was obviously higher than they were marked.

The rears springs were: LR = 225 and the RR = 150.  The rear had too much spring split, even for a Metric 4-link rear suspension with a high roll center. With the front spring rates being so high, this combination in the rear caused a lot of load to transfer to the RF on entry and through the middle of the turns overloading that tire. That would definitely help cause a push.

After careful consideration, we installed the following springs: LF = 900, RF = 850, LR = 225, and RR = 175.  The front reverse spring split with the softer RF spring helps corner entry and promotes front roll angle while the reduced spring split in the rear facilitates the high Metric moment center to help control the rear roll while not going too far.

Here is a further explanation of this.  For a balanced setup, we need for each end of the car to desire to roll to about the same angle in the turns. We have discussed this concept many times in Circle Track. A high rear moment center reduces the desire to roll, so if we don’t soften the RR spring, the rear will be stiff and not allow proper compliance.

That would overwork the RR tire and cause a loose off, if not totally loose, condition. Running a RR spring that is too soft compared to the LR spring would have the opposite effect. The rear would want to roll over more so than the front and the car would be tight, or tight/loose off. There is an optimum spring split, RR softer, that will keep the car close to a balanced dynamic state and help the car on entry, through the middle and provide more bite off the corners.

The car had spring adjusters made by All Star Performance installed in the front end on top of the stock springs. These were intended as spacers only and not to jack weight around, or so we said.

Shock Installation – Because the front shocks were hitting the spring height adjuster, we needed to make a correction. We noticed that the stock hole where the top of the shock was anchored was positioned at the factory well towards the outside edge of the spring on both sides of the car.  With stock shocks and springs, this would work for clearance, but with our setup and equipment it was not.

The fix was to create a new “stock” hole farther inward and closer to the center of the spring. We reinforced this new hole by welding a washer on top of the frame. This provided a good bit of spacing between the spring spacer and the shock body.

To make sure we were good with the rules against using front weight jackers, we welded the height adjuster so it would not turn. This made it a spacer rather than a weight jacking device. We also installed a new set of gas pressure “stock” replacement shocks that were made for racing and more like what should be used on this type of car.

We re-used these adjustable height spacers, and after re-setting them for our new spring heights, welded them so they became actual spacers. The advantage in using these in this way is that you can adjust the height to where you need them for proper ride height and then tack-weld them to satisfy the rules.

The stock upper shock holes in the frame were positioned well outside of the center of the spring. This put the shocks into the spacer that was mounted on top of the spring and caused significant damage to the shock body on both sides of the car. We had to relocate the hole to be more in-line with the spring center. We welded a washer over this new hole to permanently position the shock away from the spacer and spring.

Tire Pressures and Sizes – I reviewed the existing tire sizes versus the tire pressures they had been running. The sizes were LF = 83.75, RF = 83.75, LR = 84.5 and RR = 85.0.  This only allowed a half inch of stagger in the rear, not nearly enough for this track. This too would facilitate a tight car.

The cold tire pressures they had been running were: LF = 17psi, RF = 23psi, LR = 15psi and RR = 14psi. The RF was high and the RR was low on pressures.  The fix was to try to change the tires around while re-pressuring the tires so that we could get front and rear stagger.

I traded the RF tire and the LR tires. This put a larger tire at the RF and a smaller tire on the LR.  We re-pressured the tires to: LF = 18psi, LR = 16psi, RF = 22psi and RR = 16psi.  With those pressures, we now had a front stagger of 1.00 inch and a rear stagger of 1.50 inches.

Weight Distribution – When we weighed the car before making any changes, the cross weight was at 53%.  After installing the new springs, changing the front caster and camber, moving tires around and adjusting tire pressures, we re-set the cross weight at 48.5%, or about 75 pounds of left rear weight.

With only 48.2% rear weight, the car did not need the 53% cross which represented 216 pounds of left rear weight. This was yet another reason why this car was way too tight. It was cross weight tight and was driving off the left rear tire under acceleration.

Another thing I noticed and corrected was the placement of lead in the rear of the car. The car builder had placed a considerable amount of lead well behind the rear end, on the rear hoop that protects the fuel cell. Although fairly common, this tends to create a cantilever effect and increases the polar moment. Polar moment is defined as a force trying to rotate or swing the rear end to the outside wall during cornering.

Some teams will experience a more neutral car by placing lead well behind the rear end, but this is more like a crutch for a tight car and although it helps the car into and through the turn, it will make the car loose off. It is much better to set up the car correctly and get the front to turn with a balanced spring setup and proper moment center and cambers. That way, you get into and through the turns better and still have more bite off.

It is always a good practice to keep all lead mounted inside the axles. We may decide later on to move it out, but for now we remounted the lead in front of the rear end and high in the car. A higher center of gravity is desirable on dirt cars for dry and slick tracks.

Once we had made all of our changes, we weighed the car, set the cross weight and lowered the rear ride height. The car previously had 53 percent cross which was too much. We changed that to 48.5 percent to go along with the 48.2 percent rear weight. This ended up being about 75 pounds of LR, more acceptable than the original 216 pounds of LR.

Note the placement of lead. I don’t like lead placed this far behind the rear end. It causes a cantilever effect. It might make a tight car more neutral, but there are other ways to make a car turn better, as we are demonstrating. We moved this lead to the front of the rear axle and higher up in the car.

The Results – Once we got the springs installed, the tires mounted, the cambers set, the air pressures set and the ride heights and weight distributed like we wanted, we stood back and took a look at the car. It just looked better right away. I’ve seen lots of hobby stocks and this one looked like it was ready for the track.

The first chance we got to run the car, the driver noted that this car was now even better than his original Hobby Stock. The difference was that it turned better which allowed him to maneuver past guys that were hanging it out trying to point the car to get off the corners. And it had much more forward bite than before due to the more straight ahead attitude.

With his smooth and relentless style, this car was just what he wanted. If you prefer to sling the car in sideways, fight to get control and then hope for some semblance of bite off, then you might not want to copy us. Good luck and good racing.

The Difference Between Training for Strength and Training for Hypertrophy

The goal of training for hypertrophy is to increase muscle size, and the goal of training for strength is to maximize the amount of force produced with those muscles in relation to skeletal structure.

Although by definition, these two approaches to training aim to produce different goals, when programmed thoughtfully, they complement each other.

When talking about hypertrophy training and strength training, compared to training for general fitness, the demands of a sport would call for a bit more specificity. However, general fitness comes before sport-specific fitness, so the principles shared here, though highly applicable to powerlifting (particularly for females) apply to anyone looking to increase their overall fitness, athleticism, and strength.

Size and Strength Differences Between Females and Males

Most females are not as genetically gifted with the potential for large muscles as males are. While females can reach equal levels of strength relative to size, males have a greater physical advantage for strength and size.

Due to a typically smaller physical frame and hormonal differences, females don’t have as much potential to reach high levels of strength as men do.1 Can a woman be as strong as a man? Relatively strong, yes. Literally? No. I’m speaking generally here, though like with a lot of things, we can always find examples to the contrary on either extreme of the spectrum.

Ultimately, the size of your physical frame (skeleton and muscle) and maximum potential for muscle gain or strength gain (your highest possible limit) is genetically unique to you. 2,3

A lot of the current research, popular information, and even many athletic concepts were studied on, and developed by and for males. The principles apply to everyone, as humans, but it is important to acknowledge the differences between genders when it comes to strength and fitness strategies. For the typical female, making appreciable strength and muscle gains is a slower process than it is for males. It requires significant work, appropriate intensity, and ample time.

What Is Strength Training?

Strength is the ability to produce force, and the best way to produce force and get stronger is to move heavier weights over time. Strength training is the foundation of well-rounded fitness.

When you strength train, you are essentially asking your nervous system to produce more force through your muscles and through optimal use of your skeletal structure (in other words, with good posture and good form).

Your nervous system dictates how your body responds to training, no matter what type of training it is. The overarching purpose of training for strength is to enhance your ability to train harder (move more weight, move faster) over time. Without increasing overall strength, your body will not adapt as well to any fitness training you do. How your muscles fire, how many and how hard the fire, and for how long they can fire — all of that is determined by your nervous system. This is why lifting heavy (remember, heavy is relative to your level) is very important for making progress toward both, health and aesthetic goals.

When training for general fitness, strength training should take priority because it is the foundation by which all other training becomes productive — even if your goal isn’t performance based, and you couldn’t care less about how much weight you move. To exercise well and get the full benefits from your exercise, getting stronger is necessary. As strength coach and author Mark Rippetoe said:

Strength is the basis for all athletic endeavors.

When we talk about strength training, most people might be thinking of barbells, dumbbells and “moving weight.” However, strength training isn’t strictly limited to barbell training or powerlifting. You could train for strength with a multitude of tools — and to a certain extent, even with just your bodyweight (check out what Molly Galbraith and Karen Smith have to say about bodyweight strength training).

Still, learning and including the barbell lifts in your training is a damn good idea, especially if increasing strength is the goal. The squat, deadlift, bench and overhead presses, snatch, and clean and jerk are the foundations of strength development. There is a reason why they’re referred to as the basics and why learning to lift (and lift well) is the most effective path to developing physical strength.

The basic barbell lifts (all considered compound lifts) train the body as a whole, demanding a high level of coordination, flexibility, mobility, intensity, balance, body awareness, and speed — especially with the Olympic lifts.

How your body changes through exercise, in appearance and performance, begins with training your nervous system to adapt to the work, your muscles to produce force, and your body to have better coordination. Your nervous system responds to proper strength training by increasing your ability to produce force, contract your muscles harder, and have stronger bones.

What Is Hypertrophy Training?

Hypertrophy training is more commonly known as bodybuilding. Training for hypertrophy or for increasing muscle size contributes greatly to what many people refer to as being “toned.”

The word toned has gotten a bad rep which I don’t think is fully warranted. Toned accurately describes the look some people are going for, and training for hypertrophy is an important strategy toward that goal. Tone is an actual term. Resting muscle tone, also called tonus, is “a state of partial contraction that is characteristic of normal muscle, maintained at least in part by a continuous bombardment of motor impulses originating reflexly, and serves to maintain body posture.”4

Good posture is not only the starting point for strength, it is a starting point for developing a “toned” appearance from hypertrophy training. The stronger you are, the better tone your muscles can hold.

Hypertrophy training also builds up tendons, ligaments, and small stabilizer muscles and allow you to address specific muscle groups more directly. Tendons and ligaments adapt more slowly than muscles (which is why joint issues are often a concern in heavy lifting). Lighter hypertrophy training gives your joints and tendons time to catch up. So, while it is primarily associated with aesthetic goals, when programmed strategically, hypertrophy training helps reduce some injury risks in the long term.

If size complements strength, and lighter loads and higher reps can build up muscles and reduce risk of injury, then hypertrophy training remains very valuable.

Hypertrophy work directly improves muscle size and helps you establish a stronger mental connection with your muscles, which is an integral part of coordination and body awareness (the mind-muscle connection, as Arnold called it)!

Returning to the earlier mention of bodybuilding… It’s important to keep in mind that bodybuilding does not always mean getting stronger. The overarching intent of bodybuilding or hypertrophy training is to increase muscle size, not strength. Many dedicated bodybuilders are very strong, but relative to a weightlifter or powerlifter they are not as strong. However, we’re talking about general fitness, and for well-rounded fitness, a combination of both strength and hypertrophy training is the way to go.

You’re probably wondering, “How do I train for strength, and how do I train for hypertrophy? And how should I decide when to do which?” Well, you can’t effectively train everything at once. This is where programming comes in.

Programming For Optimal Results

Programming means making a plan, and that plan should start by addressing what you need first. What most people training for general fitness need first are better coordination and posture. Those are the two foundational qualities of strength. They also need to build muscle (hypertrophy) and improve cardiovascular conditioning.

Ideally, programming should cycle between building up the various qualities you need.

Programs that focus more on bodybuilding, basic coordination and balance, and building up cardiovascular conditioning are the best place to start if you’re a beginner. This could be for at least six months, but the length of time you spend following this program will really depend on your ability to accomplish the purpose of the program. After that, dedicating six months to a full year to a strength training program using barbells is ideal before considering a period of training for higher athleticism (speed and agility) or for more size through bodybuilding again.

The best recommendation for developing high-quality general fitness and a physique that makes you happy includes:

a solid two years of consistent and focused training that allows you to master good lifting technique and builds the necessary components of fitness on top of each other

taking time to learn your body

consistent stress management

While it’s hard to give blanket recommendations for what type of program someone should follow, or start with, since it largely depends on your individual needs and starting point, I can offer a couple of general guidelines:

You must be able to move well, in a variety of ways before loading up those movements with weight. As mentioned earlier, strength training requires good posture, coordination, stability and mobility. Consider this before selecting a program. If you can’t get up off the floor without assistance, do a bear crawl, balance on one foot, or touch your toes, you might need to start with bodyweight movement basics before jumping into weight training.

You will need to balance how much you train, with how well you can recover from the training and how much energy you have. Hypertrophy and strength can be trained simultaneously, but you can only train as much as you can recover from your training. Piling goals and training styles on top of each other without proper programming can leave you spinning your wheels and worse, can increase your risk of injury. Training for multiple goals at once is often not recommended for someone training for general fitness because they tend to manage their programming poorly. However, if you have great self-awareness and a solid way to evaluate and track your training, you may be able to handle more complexity and work on improving in multiple qualities at once.

Work with a coach. If you are new to training, you need a plan. You need structure. You probably don’t know what you’re doing yet. You will need to learn. A good coach or coaching group is your best bet if you feel completely stumped about where to start strength-wise and don’t feel confident in how your body moves just yet. If you’re not new to lifting, but you’re new to training specifically for strength or hypertrophy, working with a coach or buying a program from a reputable coach is a wise investment. If you are a more advanced trainee, evaluate your past training history and consider what you are curious about or what improvements you would like to make. There is a wealth of information, great coaches, and excellent books available. With some research and common sense, you can find what you need!

Make your training a hobby. Nothing beats getting truly interested in your own fitness, health, and strength. It is a hobby that pays you back in many ways mentally, physically, and — dare I say — spiritually.
