Hii 🥰 I love your art so so very much and it's inspired me to start drawing again after about a year and a half of nothing. I was wondering if you could do a quick explanation of how you draw creature heads? Even with skull references and stuff I'm having troubles particularly with the eyes / eye placement and cheek areas
hi thank you, i'm happy you've gotten drawing again. i try not to make fully drawn 'here's how i do x' tutorials anymore since realising that i would just be training people to replicate my mistakes and photos really are the best reference
however not many people know HOW to use photorefs so i will show you this thing i made for someone else who asked a similar question in my dms once. step 1 is to discard any hangups you might have about tracing. professionals trace. it's fine.
for an example of what i mean when i say drawn tutorials just teach you how to replicate mistakes: i got the knee visibly wrong in my drawing here lol. but for a guide you get the idea. you basically want to put on x-ray goggles when you're looking at photos. you want to be able to see through the animal and understand 1. the axial skeleton [skull, ribs, spine] first and 2. the appendicular skeleton [pelvis, limbs] secondarily. you want to understand it in a 3D space - see how in my traced sketch, I have blocked out the ribcage as a solid form using contour lines which describe a curve. i didn't draw every individual rib, there's no need. don't get bogged down in the weeds, this drawing should take like 5 minutes max
the reason we are tracing and not just closely referencing is because this saves us from also having to worry about getting angles & proportions right. we will worry about those later. for now we are gaining understanding of how a body is formed without the pressure of having to get it 'right'.
okay so you asked about heads in particular so we'll look at heads. in the thingy above you can see that i traced a kite shape onto the front of the cranium before filling in the snout.

it's a canine and not super interesting but i think they show really well what goes on with the frontal bones. the cheek bones form the two lateral points of a kite shape.
if you start your sketch at the kite shape you can turn it in space
what you are looking for is the kite. the kite is not flat. the kite is the front of the cranium minus the nose/snout etc, it is laid out over a curved surface. you will find the eyes along the horizontal line and the cheekbones tucked under the bottom faces of the kite. the snout/nose/etc emerges from the crosshairs in the middle and the cheekbones follow the outer edge of the kite, but not the jaw. this is how i construct all my faces, human or animal doesn't matter it's all this underneath. using it i can visualise the hidden parts of the face such as the obscured cheekbone
try to find as many different types of animal or human heads as possible and trace the kite onto them. then you will see

How do you draw so freely? Its beautiful
Thank you very much!!
Assuming you're referring to how loose my sketches are, I think it boils down to mileage. Alongside the classic recommendation of reference + study, usually when I get really into a piece of media I'll draw characters I like a whole lot and it builds muscle memory, and the ones that end up in my posts usually have already been through that process to some extent.
Studying references + going through a couple dozens rounds of extra wonky proportions and nonsensical physics (definitely visible on my own posts lmao) will help with both your brain and muscle and once you've stacked up enough of that it'll become easier to intuit certain things and keep stuff looser.
(hey this got really long, so just scroll to the bottom to see my current sketch process if you'd prefer that)
In my personal experience as a hobbyist, I spent roughly 3 years butchering the loomis method until things looked even remotely to my liking. And by that I mean "layering bullshit guidelines so thick and heavy that by the time I'm done lightening it via eraser there was barely any paper left." Drawing has been and still is really frustrating sometimes but for most of it I have a lot of fun and honestly as long as you have that it doesn't really matter whatever else (again, hobbyist here. my stakes are low). Switching up medium every once in a while if you can helps keep things interesting, and drawing with a pen is good for building both line confidence and tolerance for your own mistakes.
Honestly for all of that this stuff is still RNG to me lol. Every once in a while things just Will Not Work Out, but the rates definitely gets better the more experience you have. I only post about, say, 20% of what I draw probably. The rest includes but is not limited to practice sketches, personal art, stuff too nonsensical for even tumblr, or sketches I just plain don't like.
Uhhhhh now for what you actually asked. I've grown really lax, if not a little lazy, regarding guidelines (when you've drawn a specific thing often enough it just kinda gets tedious) so now i just do these very thin and light lines vaguely hinting at a character's pose and position. The only thing I consistently do is probably the little circle to indicate the head. For more heavily stylised proportions I'll go into more details at the outline stage, mostly aiming for the feeling of it (usually how goofy it looks since thats what I use them for). For more complex poses/ones I'm not familiar with I'll do multiple iterations.
Unearthed some stuff that I probably wouldn't post otherwise (the proportions are a bit off from what i'd prefer and the lineart isn't that confident). Here i am redrawing this for demonstration purposes

gonna go in order of the photos. everything shown was done with a 0.5 mechanical pencil.
usually i start with these very thin, light lines, just getting a very rough ideas of where everything is - head, torso, pose (spine, arms, legs). i sketch largely with approximations and landmarks, keeping in mind some bullet points for the relative distance among certain body parts (e.g. make sure the elbow is always a little past the rib cage. i'll write more out at the end) rather than any precise guidelines. i often don't even clean these up - at the end the main lineart is harsh enough that they override these, and though they're visible they do not interfere with the image as a whole. you can look at any of my sketches prior to this and find them.
then i go in with hard, dark lines, once again noting the respective distance among facial features (i'm using the loomis proportions, thinking about the face in thirds)
this is so unhelpful when i just say it, but genuinely at this stage i rely on muscle memory and mileage. if you've drawn the same anime girl for a bajillion times you can probably intuit the proportions. remember that 3d things have volume and interact. ("yes, see, her bangs and eyes round out like this, two locks of hair (they're thick and well kept, so they should have a solid cylinder shape...) against the side plane of her face - split that plane of the skull in half, and the ear should be somewhere around there...")
ok for the parts where a lot of things happen (clothes, tie, the pose interfering with them etc) i just go ham. make a mess! draw everything out even if they overlap each other. so you can keep track of them. here i also bring in some light shading to make out the form of her torso.
i lighten the whole thing with eraser, but the previous lines are harsh enough that the residue can act as a new base of sorts. i think this is comparable to having a sketch layer with lowered opacity in a digital piece
i go over the whole thing again now that i've got a better idea of the form
rinse and repeat. go all in, adjust, blow the whole thing up if it looks off and then build on the remains
for the last photo, you can see that I've adjusted the right leg, since now im taking into account perspective. I uhhhhh still am not particularly confident in drawing her shoes (or any other shoes for that matter) in 3d space so once again I'm bullshitting the form with trying to wrap around its shape and to visualize the shadows. usually for these I pull up references and pray
a side note for the hands: against an earlier ask, I've mostly switched to using silhouettes and then sectioning the fingers after. here the slight shading approach also help in blocking out and making them readable without you having to stress over the minutiae of what joint should bend where.
...I've hit the upload limit for photos, so I'll reblog with additions, but in essence:
• very thin lines to map out the pose and mark where certain body parts may go
• i draw everything in approximation, keeping a few bullet points in mind and adjust as i go (which does keep the sketches loose and make it easier to vary proportions for different characters, but also make floating features more likely (evident in some of my more recent posts as well):
loomis for the head and neck
rib cage (+collarbone), then elbow slightly below it
pelvis, crotch halfway point of the whole body
legs, knees their halfway point
feet are about as long as the forearm usually
(Disclaimer: i must stress again that I'm not a professional, and cannot guarantee that these bullet points are entirely correct. This is just how i draw at the time of writing - stylized with little regard for the intricacies of human anatomy)
• with the exception of the first stage, my lines are dark enough that the mistakes get reused as base for correction after they've been lightened with eraser a little bit.
• I also bring in some shading while doing lineart to make sense of form if I'm having trouble. I use this most often for noses, hands, legs, and breasts.
• if you encounter a sketch that Refuses To Work Out, leave it. No, listen to me, Leave It. Revisit it sometimes later, if you want (for mine they range from a week to 5 months, but my sketchbooks disorganization is another matter entirely). just leave it for a bit.
• do a bunch of pen sketches if you wanna get comfortable with mistakes/build muscle memory
• once more, all-time classic: reference the hell out of anything you don't know. 100000 google images. look up a human anatomy 3d model to see what muscles attach to which bone. practice copying 1:1 things that look good to you (practice!! don't post/claim anything as your own if it isn't - this applies to my own stuff btw, feel free to trace for practice at your own risk). note again that the only reason i can only bullshit my way out of these is because i've drawn them dozens of times - the moment you throw me more complex perspectives i'll need to start the learning process all over again
#anon ask#asks#hey sorry this got So long. if u dont wanna send me asks again i understand#remember when i said my last ask was long... haha... good times...#this thing has been in my drafts for what... a year now? sorry. i'm just not sure how to articulate all this#DoNT make bets on how long until im done writing the reblog also...#junko enoshima#danganronpa#sketch#traditional stuff

Aaaand here's week 46 freshly finished :)
As always you can follow me on twitter where they’re posted daily
And read more info on each of them below the cut
Daily Dragon #322 - Trotter Dragon
Dragons used as beasts of burden in large, expansive terrains. The skin on their necks bulge out and can even change color when they detect other travelers, or feel threatened. Letting their riders know what's around them.
Daily Dragon #323 - Dragon
"She was locked away in a castle, guarded by a terrible, fire breathing dragon." Dragon from Shrek! Despite being a genuine fan of this series for pretty much my whole life I'm almost certain this is my first time drawing her which is crazy to think
Daily Dragon #324 - Tianhuo
The best horse dragon from one of the best fighting games that deserved so so SO much better. Still genuinely sad it had to come to an end. Tianhuo wasn't one of my mains but I did really like her! She's fun and I mean, she is a dragon lol
Daily Dragon #325 - Freakusaur
Long wyrms with tough, rubbery skin that holds tons of glowing interiors. They're unexpected and odd creatures that appear to be drawn to imminent chaos and dark energy surges soon to occur in the weird places they're found.
This is another redraw of... this thing! From 2019! Back then it was simply called a "Freak Dragon" and if I'm not mistaken it's based on... something from Jungle Beat which I believe I was playing at the time? Idk. It's here now. Enjoy.
Daily Dragon #326 - Dragonquin
I've done Mario dragons, I've done Sonic dragons. So I feel like I have to do something for my 3rd platforming all-timer: Ty the Tasmanian Tiger! So here's the Dragonquin from Ty 3! The quinkan have GREAT designs so I'm glad to draw one!
Wanted to do a dragon from Ty for a bit but wasn't really sure what qualified as a dragon from the series... The bunyip powerup from the first game? An Uber Frill? The Quinking (what I would probably have done). I had COMPLETELY forgotten there was a straight up Dragon boss lol
Daily Dragon #327 - Mephistopheles the Malicious One
Once an all powerful dragon god, when it was discovered he was planning seize power and destroy earth, he was banished from the holy court. Now he's stuck like this, punished to wander the planet he once saw to destroy.
This is, obviously, a 3D Model! I've had Blender for a long time now, and have made some stuff in it. But idk man it's so complicated to use idk how to make 3D models lol. So this is just the default sphere touched up a bit :)
Here's some other angles!
Daily Dragon #328 - Wyvusaurus
Large and hungry wyverns. If they land to eat you, they won't take off again until they've eaten! So either feed them or make it clear you're not worth their effort.
This is ANOTHER redraw! This one is from 2019 I think? And it's another generic dragon just titled "Dragon" in my files. I think it's already a pretty unique body type but I tried to make it something even more unique with a more ghidora styled body

What are your favorite Obi-Wan ships and what do you like about their dynamics? 😊
Oh I like this ask 🤩. Thanks, anon!
Let's start with, I ship Obi-Wan with any man who tried to kill him at least once and is younger than him *snort*. The fact that I can summarize my Kenobi shipping tendencies like that always makes me laugh. And yes, Cody counts, because chip or no chip, he did try to kill Obi-Wan once 😉. And yes, I did, in fact, just use a winking emoji and "kill" in the same sentence.
Out of all these my three favourite ships are Obikin, Obimaul and Codywan. Details under the cut.
Obikin - I mean if I really wanted to go into what I love about their dynamics I'd have to write a thesis about it, negl. I'm gonna focus on what I really like about their dynamics... The age difference, man. It always gets to me for some reason. The fact that they're at different stages of life and yet manage to develop this deep, meaningful, or--as our Obikin God Strover has put it--more-intimate-than-lovers connection is something that is very attractive to me at this almost cellular level. Like, when I read a well-written fic about them I feel it in my bloodcells, I swear. Another thing is how their understanding of life and love differs so completely because of their vastly different life experiences - the idea that with fic we are able to bridge that gap and make them find common ground and change the fate of the galaxy at the same time... *sigh*. Their love story in canon (I'm just quoting Deborah Chow, ok), is so very tragic. I'm a romantic at hear and so I will always crave a good fix-it, or alternate chain of events of a tragic love story. But tragic or not, the differences in their personalities are also amazing for amusement purposes hence why they're my first choice for Modern AUs. They are so 3D and there are so many facets to them that you can basically thrust them into any situation and make it work. And yes, all this is just scraping the tip of the iceberg for me, maybe one day I will write a thesis 😉.
Obimaul - This one is so obvious 😀. It's canon that Maul is absolutely obsessed with Obi-Wan. He lived through being bisected just to get revenge, lol. It's such a good base for fics, is it not? Is it NOT? Seriously though, I have this very specific Obimaul scenario that I love above all others and that's broken man Obi-Wan on Tattooine having lost everything, and Maul still thirsty for revenge finding him and then realizing that, hey a) killing this husk of a man is no longer satisfying, b) we're both kinda broken, c) we both hate Darth Sidious above everything else. I've read so many great fics about Hermitwan and Maul teaming up to either kill Sidious or just somehow make it till the end of their sad lives with just a little bit less of loneliness... I love it. They make for some really great angst. And honestly it's so easy to twist Maul's obsession based in hate into obsession based in love, those two feelings have quite a lot in common after all. Also, I really have to commend fic writers for coming up with creative solutions to Maul's canonic lack of dick. I think Dathomirian Magick Dick was my favourite so far 😆.
Codywan - Again, Codywan is ultimately tragic. The fact that Cody is a clone with a chip in his brain programmed to kill the man he loves... I mean, doesn't get more tragic than that, right? And also, even if they do manage to deal with the chip problem, the aging-twice-as-fast problem still persists. And you know, the fact that the majority of the galaxy doesn't even recognize Cody as a sentient being. This ship is just problem stacked on a problem stacked on yet another problem. You know, the fact that Obi-Wan is Cody's commanding officer is also kind of hard to ignore. Which is why I am so drawn to them! For me if there isn't a problem there isn't a ship 😉. I think what I love about their dynamic is their at first glance similar but after a deeper dive completely different personalities, and the fact that with Codywan it's Cody that gets to be fed up with Obi-Wan's antics for one, and not the other way round (with Obikin it's always the other way round). What I really love about Codywan fics is that authors usually focus on completely different facets of Obi-Wan's personality than they do with all the other ships. Really, it just makes me love Obi-Wan more. I always loved Obi-Wan as a character, but reading a couple of Codywans just really drove it home for me.
I hope this answers your question, anon! Thanks for asking ❤️, I simply loooove talking about my ships.

Hi! your art is so cool, im struggling with drawing faces, hair and limbs, any tips?
-@mossy--wizard/@mossy--wizards-art-lore
Honestly the main thing would be to use references! Don't be afraid of using them definitely, especially for blocking out foundations! I use Pinterest to compile a bunch of references that I can look back to all the time! Whether it's a bunch of poses or particular close up photos of hands etcetcetc
Something that helps me a lot too is look at 3D models of anatomy, particularly 3D character blockouts like so
because a lot of them colour code the different muscle groups it helps a lot to visually breakdown what makes up the different parts of the body! You can even find 3D blockouts of hands and heads too, the main idea is to break up the different sections into more basic shapes and add detail from their, once you have a steady foundation of the anatomy what you put on top will fit together much more nicely!
And of course it can be done for hands too!!
As for HAIR I drew up a quick thing
Once again the main thing is blocking out and using refs lol, for longer hair I think of the pieces as more ribbon like in how they flow and overlap! And honestly when it comes to hair, keep it loose! My brain usually shuts off when I draw hair, I don't overthink it at all and just let my pen go with the flow using mainly long strokes, the steps are just where I start drawing it to where I finish it at. And when it comes to shading you mainly just follow the flow of the sections you've drawn out!
I hope that makes sense and helps out a little!!!

Not very happy with the fit of the clothes, but considering this is my first time ever patterning - or even making! - doll clothes, I'll give myself a pass. Wig has been glued on like I said I would need to.
I hit a small wall with her, because I was planning to make her shoulder pauldrons and boots out of foam clay, but the stuff I ordered was awful when it arrived. It had this weird jelly texture and could not be formed into anything, just a total waste of money. I always hit a mental block when I have to rebuy a broken/useless supply and throw away money. I went five years without a dremel because the first one I bought broke before I could even use it, and now that I have one, I will never not have one again.
While I got over the block, I worked on her gloves. Since I've given up on her going between outfits, I could just paint on her layered white sleeve like her official doll does without worrying about it being anachronistic. She has a long white sleeve on under her usual gloves in both her original & queen looks. For her fingerless gloves, I repainted Toralei's gloves from the Hissfits 3-pack. I left the spikes on them and stuff because I like them that way and I think Glimmer would too, honestly.

It's wild how much adding the gloves feels like it brought her together and "finished" her. Almost like character designers know what they're doing LOL. Anyway, I went to the store today to get new clay and wasn't careful with the labels. I actually got the clay right next to the foam clay, which is still an airdry clay, but it's not foam. At this point I'm just using it for her shoulder pauldrons, but it's not going to work for making boots from. I've made bases formed to the bottom of her feet and once they dry... I guess I'm patterning a boot, now. Kinda scared and a lot out of my depth, ngl.
"Todo"s that aren't actually slated for right now are to make her staff and possibly "finish" her faceup. For her staff, I'm basically waiting for the perfect piece of trash to be generated LOL. At some point I'll get something on a stick that will be perfect for it, so until then I'm not worrying about it and certainly not buying anything. For her faceup, I think it's super cute and love it as is, but she doesn't have any eyelashes. This was on purpose, because I was going to give her 3d lashes, but now I'm on the fence about having any at all because without them she matches the show artstyle. It's something I can easily add later, so I'm basically just seeing how I feel as I continue this series and have more of the dolls all besides each other. So, I may or may not add lashes, drawn or 3d, later down the line. We'll see!
Next steps: Finish and paint pauldrons, pattern and assemble the boots... And then that's it! (I say like that second thing isn't the most intimidating thing I've encountered doll customizing thus far)

Hello! Could i please have some tips on drawing plus-size bodies? Tysm!
Yee ok. I'm not the best at drawing plus sized people btw and I'm also a lot less confident in drawing bigger male bodies characters than female, but eh I'll try my best. This is gonna be quite long so I hope you dont mind reading heheh.

I start off doing the very basic stick figure pose like I would on an average sized person. This can be very rushed and vague since I know I'm gonna be changing the proportions a lot, but it's just to get the basic proportions and sizes out of the way.

Heres the female figure after I had finished with it. Fat tends to pack in the upper thighs and hips so I made that larger. Boobs are also usually bigger, and since they're also mostly fat they tend to sag downwards when not wearing a bra. I usually draw boobs first since it helps me get an idea of the torsos shape.
I think it varies for each person but theres sometimes a lil ring of fat just below the boobs, so you can remove of take them away depending on the character. For the belly, that also sags downwards, like an oval shape; a round belly just looks like they're either pregnant, got a beer belly or are just full. Use the bottom part to help match it to the hip dips. Also the hip dips are a lil chonke. The belly button stretches. Idk if this will help you, but I tend to draw the crotch to help with leg placement. It usually ends up mostly hidden under the belly, but it also helps make it look more 3d.
Think of the arms as being cushioned. The top parts got 1, the bottom the other. Ankles and wrists also tend to be a bit more thick. Something a lot of people forget about are double chins. It's a bit hard to get used to drawing them. I recommend drawing them taking up most or all of the neck.
In the side profile I've drawn three bumps on the belly. The top is the little flab ring the character has, the middle is the belly section and is the biggest, the bottom is the uterus/womb thing sticking out. I'm female and idk the difference between the words lol. Brain smol.

Ok here the male body. It's actually quite similar to the female one. The main difference is that the shoulders tend to be larger, but that was made during the skeletal construction in the beginning. They got bigger boobs, too, but I made them flatter to make them look maler idk words. Fat also packs at the upper thighs and I think also the hips, dont trust me on that, but to make them look smaller we just depend on the skeletal structure again. The final difference is the slightly smaller dumpy and lack of womb/uterus bump.
Didnt draw feet and hands because I'd be fucked if I could be bothered to lmao. I used reference for both of these, so I'm still learning drawing these body types. Theres also of course variations in proportions depending on the person, like rounder/saggier/bigger bellies, bigger boobs or hips, pear shaped, apple shaped ect.
While this is a more realistic style, it can still be applied to more cartoony ones once you understand the shaped and how to exaggerate them into a cartoon style.
Hope this helps and sorry for making you read a lot!

i havent drawn as often as i'd like to on this new tablet. but i *have* been drawing on it!!! (which is infinitely better than basically not touching a pencil in over a year) its got me thinking about my characters again. the stories i wanted (want) to tell. why i wanted to tell them. the reasons i started rly drawing. and 3d modelling. like i had goals once lol.
its ok to draw shit art. its okay to draw shit art. (<-mantra). the important part is im drawing. the important part is im drawing and enjoying myself. i will improve over time; thats a given. but i need to make it fun first. stop stressing myself out over tomorrows. gotta learn to just enjoy the process. stop comparing myself to others. just have fun. just have fun u dumb slut (<- also a mantra)

yeah, my buddy and i always watch the show together so when we finished s4 it was just utter disappointment for the both of us. smth really did shift, like now i don't even like thinking about the show bc i'm still so disappointed how it turned out 😭😭😭
i agree the animation was gorgeous and a big part of the appeal for me. it's such a shame to me that flying bark no longer works on the show :( ik they're working on other stuff, but i would have been fine with season 5 getting delayed for an even longer time if it meant they would keep animating it tbh, but what can we do at this point. at least it's not abysmal dogshit lol
yea, i thought as much! it makes me sad that they lowkey set up wildbrain with this show. their work on sonic prime was good... but that's a 3D show. they should have picked another studio that does hand-drawn digital animation and not one that does tweening. it's really hard to live up to a studio like flying bark especially when you're not even using the same animation method as them lol. i'm not surprised to hear that the fight scenes are not all that compared to previous seasons.
as for the writing stuff u mentioned... yiiiikes man. i dunno if i'm delusional here but i feel like the character writing being too fanservicey or fanficy stems from the fact that the crews pretty involved in the fandom and probably keeps tabs on the popular fandom tropes. like monkey mk being a thing from the early days of the fandom became canon in s4. shadowpeach reconciliation arc was also one of the things ppl wanted the most and it's happened now. i wish they just stuck to their own ideas instead of appealing to fans. characters being way more emotional just feels like a way to generate Omg Character Angst Moments even if it feels wildly ooc for some characters to do it.
we're getting more focus on how wukong feels about the rivalry him and macaque have going on
they're finally doing what i wanted them to do which was give us wukong's perspective on his relationship w/ macaque ... and it sounds like they're not even doing it well :| glad it's getting addressed but if it's just completely unnatural i'm not even sure i want it LOL. wukong being completely avoidant when it comes to stuff like this made it more believable that he'd just never give his perspective Ever so if it's really just abrupt n just more fanservice... i'm gonna be a lil mad watching it. (also what you said about him being nerfed... Not again bro. please let him kick some ass for once.)
is it weird to say i think the show is definitely getting canned? lego doesn't seem to care for it all that much and at this point it doesn't even seem like s6 is viable. no season special is kind of a sign to me, but at the same time, i'm glad wildbrain doesn't have to go through trying to animate a special for lego monkie kid. it would never live up to revenge of the spider queen.. lol
so. lego monkie kid season 5
#sorry its almost 12 and im like half awake so it took a while for me to formulate a coherent response#if some of this feels like im just yapping about nothing Im Very Sorry

Hello i hope your having a wonderful day/night! Idk if your open to request right now but I hope you are! if your not then I'm sorry!! 😰 but may I request a Jessica rabbit type reader x wally daring?? You do this then thank you sm!!
summery: reader who's like Jessica Rabbit and how'd they'd be with Wally. gn! reader btw
tw: mentions of creepy male behavior.
a/n: my requests aren't open but I was surprisingly inspired by this. I haven't watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit in so long but I feel like I did a really good job! ALSO! I'm going to mainly write in headcanon style because for some reason I find it easier even though this is like...my third time writing headcanons lol.

Master List
❥When you moved into the neighborhood, you immediately noticed that you were a bit…different. Flatter than the other residents…as in they were all 3D while you were 2D.
❥Everyone flocked you, curious as to how that was even possible. So you explained how you came from a town that was a bit more…animated. They were in awe as you told tales of your hometown. Even commenting on how they wanted to visit some day.
❥Even with all the commotion of your new neighbors, you couldn’t help but keep your eyes on a certain yellow puppet. He watched from behind the others, gaze never leaving you. You couldn’t help but let your ego grow a bit, flaunting a bit more than you already do.
❥All the attention your first day left you a bit overwhelmed. Yes, you’ve dealt with crowds before when you worked as a singer at a bar in your hometown, but this kind of attention was different. It wasn’t the perverted stares you grew accustomed to. In fact, that was a bit of the reason why you left.
❥Even though you were overwhelmed the first day, you couldn’t help but appreciate how kind your new neighbors were. Once they learned that you were a singer they just had to have you perform (a bit to Sally’s dismay. But you're the new neighbor so she can let you have the spotlight this time).
❥As you sung a love song, your gaze was once again drawn to who you’ve come to know as Wally Darling. A fitting name, truely. His stare was intense as he watched you. You’d think you’d be creeped out by it, but you didn’t. In fact, you felt flattered. Compared to the creeps at the bar who’d oogle at you without shame, who’d cat call, who’d stare at you like you were lesser for whatever reasons…Wally’s stare was nothing like that. A bit empty, sure, but it wasn’t disrespectful or perverted.
❥Day by day, you found yourself growing infatuated with Wally. You wanted to spend more time with him. Get to know him better. Maybe even entertain an idea of something more.
❥It didn’t help that you caught on to his small shows of affection. His stare lingering on you being the tell-tale one. But you also caught him touching you, whether it be a pat on the shoulder or a short hug. How he gifted you things, sometimes a drawing, or just something that ‘reminded him of you’ (which made you feel more confident at the fact that he thinks about you).
❥You were the first to finally make a move. The entire neighborhood knew about the flirting you two participated in, not like you were keeping it a secret. But you could tell that Wally didn’t seem like he was going to do anything further than that.
❥Let’s just say everyone was relieved when you two became partners. Only to realize they’d have to deal with even more lovey dovey flirting afterwards.

TIME FOR A PROCESS POST let's talk abt getting from this (client sketch - which, btw, i know other artists have talked about this plenty, but i LOOOOOOVE a client sketch as early direction on a commission. LOVE it)
to this!
at first we didn't know if the title was going to go across the desk, or over the central figure (emara's) head against the back wall. so there was a 1st version where we were favoring a higher title, then we started favoring the desk so we scrapped the clutter + centered it more
i used clip studio's 3D models (particularly for the chair, guard, + weapon crates) and perspective rulers to help with laying everything out at this stage, tho i abandoned the 3D pretty early on bc it's a bit too clunky for me. maybe i'll find it quicker to use w more practice!
(the rest under the cut!)
once the basic layout was approved, i threw together a value study to explain how in the final image all the clutter of the bg detail would be unified and pushed back. lately i find myself thinking abt value earlier + earlier in the process; planning ahead saves me a lot of time!
i fiddled with starting to refine things digitally, but then i got A BRAND NEW LIGHTBOX delivered in the mail with perfect timing (lmao) so i just ended up printing off the digital sketch, finalizing in pencil, + scanning back in
then comes five billion different steps of locking in values, again. i did everything greyscale first, but i didn't worry abt getting things super polished at this stage bc i knew color would factor in a lot to later decisions
this is the point at which presenting these wips "step by step" is kind of misleading; i didn't do these stages one at a time, but rather had a BUNCH of different lighting/shading layers that i kept toggling on and off as i worked to make sure everything was coming along well.
(to get some of these caps i actually went into the main file again and turned a bunch of stuff on/off just for the sake of getting specific examples, because actually when i was actively working on it there was rarely a point where i was actually working on something with "all lighting turned off and just the shading on," or anything like that; but i AM interested in showing what effects different lighting/shading changes had on the base colors, even if i wasn't really making these changes in a rigid order.)
i.e., just for the sake of interest, here's how the flat colors look without those adjustments!! but i honestly never looked at it like this on its own for long...i had all the shading/lighting turned off so i could see what i was doing while flatting, but i was constantly checking back and forth.
then tones added on top (which were actually just two copies of the tone folders in the above posts, set to linear burn and overlay) -
which makes it get HORRIFYINGLY dark, but that's when we go in and add a bunch of lighting adjustments.
the most obvious lighting change above is the big burst of hot pink light from the corner, but there was also some masked overlay + burn layers to pop out the guard + emara and make sure they were pulled out from the bg. if this were a standalone illustration, i maybe would have let the bg (and all that painstakingly drawn detail..........) stand out a little more, but a cover functions differently, and i wanted to make sure the eye goes to the title first. that means sacrificing bg detail even if it looks sick lol
then final touches! a lot of my very last touches are things that are close to invisible; gradient maps on very low opacity, noise, a little bit of scribbling on upper layers. the typesetting was all by the client, except for the lettering for "emara king's," which i did myself!
finally, here's a comparison of ⬅where i left off one night close to the deadline thinking "it's probably done, but i'll sleep on it just in case," then all the adjustments i made the next day with fresh eyes.➡ and that's it!!! phew!!! that's how i make a cover!
#my art#process#wip#tutorials#<- not really but. i just figure someone browsing my tutorials tag might be into this#i am so so so so so fucking mad that i didnt think to turn timelapse recording on for this#bc a timelapse wouldve been so fucking sick. but i can at least share this

Happy New Year everyone! 2021 was one hell of a year for a lot of reasons for me personally. This is going to be sort of a self reflection post. I feel like what I’m about to write is kind of just gonna be a repeat of what I’ve said earlier in December, and even a few months before, but I still feel like it’s still important, for one reason or another.
2021 was probably one of my most productive years of just being myself and working towards just improving myself and my art. Other years has mainly just been work towards bigger goals in life, but it really just felt like I was working nonstop without having to do something for myself that wasn’t that bigger thing. I lowkey felt like I was racing towards a future I wasn’t really ready for, nor did I feel like I wanted to get to as soon as possible...not while a lot of other stuff was happening all at once.
I’ve mentioned vaguely in the past, but 2021 was rough on me for a number of reasons, and although I won’t get into specifics cause it’s personal, my mental state was severely strained for and low for the 1st half of the year, but I kept going. I’m an introvert, and although I have gotten over being shy (mostly), I was still in my own little bubble before the start of 2021. I kept to myself, and a close knit circle of friends I’ve had for years. But after playing Bugsnax, I took a huge chance to break out of comfort zone, embrace the fandom, and reach out to people. I’ve never done anything like this before, but I wasn’t about to let a good feeling fade away
Meeting new people and making friends was genuinely one of the biggest things to come out of this year outside of just making art. Even the ones who are probably still just mutuals, I really enjoy your presence and work as well. They’ve become an amazing part of my life as friends that I care deeply about, and continue to be an inspiration, just knocking it out of the park with anything they do. And...it’s nuts how they consider me just as important, or at least, a very positive part of their lives right now. I’m just incredibly grateful towards these people, and I appreciate so many of them. I don’t ever expect much nor do I expect anything from anyone, but the amount of support and love is something I will never take for granted.
With all of that, I was also able to grow as an artist as well. Even though I know how to do 3D stuff, I wanted to focus mainly on 2D and improve my craft there, and I got what I wanted. I ended up experimenting and found a style to call my own. The difference between the start of the year vs. the end of the year is staggering, and I’m really happy with what I’m able to produce now. Even though I’ve mainly been drawing muppet people this year, I’ve hit that point where whatever I envision, I get exactly what I want 9/10 times. There’s the occasional moment where I’m just like “aw damn, let’s try that again,” but other than that, I’m never really frustrated outside of just not being in the mood to draw sometimes. I found brushes I really like and I’ve used to the point where I feel pretty dang good using them for nearly everything I draw. Of course I’ll experiment with different brushes when the usuals don’t work, but you get what I mean.
I also think it’s really funny and cool how much you guys actually like my OCs in general. I don’t have a lot of them, but I do like to invest a lot of time concepting them and making them as appealing as possible for my own standards, and I’m happy to see you guys like them just as much. Now I understand why people get so damn excited seeing their OCs drawn by other people lol.
The biggest thing to come out of my art though is with commissions. I launched it in mid 2021, and have gotten a fair bit of traction on it. It’s actually been extremely fun to do commissions, with having something to do with a clear goal in mind. It gets the mind working having to think creativity with the guidelines you’re given. I’m extremely satisfied with what I’ve been able to make for those commissions and it makes me happy that I’ve been able to make those customers extremely happy as well with the results.
With all of that in mind, I’m just a much happier person in general, even among a bunch of personal irl issues. My life and year would genuinely be so much more different without meeting the people I did meet and get invested in the online communities for a game about depressed muppet people. And I’m real happy to hear that I’ve made some kind of positive impact on people’s lives one way or another this year too. Like I said, I’m not gonna take any of this for granted. You all deserve so much.
So thank you guys so much. I hope you all a very happy New Year, and let’s see what 2022 has in store.
If you made it this far, let me share a personal thing about this piece. We planted a tree in our front yard a few years ago. It’s been growing steadily for awhile now. It’s also a reminder of one of my pet’s passings. So it ends up becoming a thing where I have small moments of self reflection when I have a second to think to myself.

Hi hi, just wanted to say I’ve updated the ship generator with a DD2 option, so go play with it and maybe die inside when you get Runaway matched with The Hoarder with foot fetish/devotion or whatever.
(Some more ramblings about the generator and some negative personal stuff under the read more.)
I made a change in the generator that makes getting NPCs and enemies rarer (and monsters even rarer, since monsters are a subcategory of enemies). It makes odd things a little rarer to happen, and I didn’t have it this way up until now cause I thought it was funnier to have the super cursed results popping more often.
But I had to make this choice cause I wasn’t able to maintain both the previous system AND give Runaway same odds as the other heroes. Before the changes, I gave the heroes twice the priority of being picked in relation to NPCs, enemies and monsters. But I couldn’t do the same to Runaway cause she had a toggle condition (she can’t be drawn unless you have ‘DD2′ on). So I couldn’t figure it out how to give her the same odds as the other heroes and I thought this was unfair.
So now we have a pool that looks like this if we have all the toggles enabled:
Highwayman
Crusader
Vestal
Plague Doctor
Grave Robber
Hellion
Leper
Jester
Bounty Hunter
Houndmaster
Occultist
Antiquarian
Abomination
Man-at-arms
Arbalest
Musketeer
Flagellant
Shield-breaker
Abomination beast form^[canMonsters]
Runaway^[canDD2]
[npcs]^[canNPCS]
[enemy]^[canEnemies]
This mean each one of this line has an equal chance of being selected. Do you see how that gives NPCs and enemies less chances to pop up? When [npcs] is drawn, the program picks one of the NPCs list, and the same goes for enemies. In [enemy], we have the list [monster]. So if [enemy] is drawn, between all the enemies you have a chance to draw a [monster]. See how rare this is? Before, I had all the NPCs and enemies in the same list as the heroes (monster was already a list within enemy). But that will have to do it for now!
Also, someone asked for a generator with only DD monsters and I wanted to give this to them but then I looked inside my heart while starting it and realized I actually didn’t want to do this at all lol Sorry, I’m not a monster fucker :( Oh, but if there is any monster you want to see added, feel free to send me an ask and I’ll consider adding it!
About the negative personal stuff, I was typing what I was going through before remembering I hate venting, it always makes me feel worse. Suffice to say I had a huge self loathing episode and I just wanted to erase myself from the public eye-- starting from all my art from a DD server. This did not make me feel any better and I regretted it almost immediately, but by then everything in that server was already gone (good thing I didn’t start this with my blog lol). After some days of mindlessly playing DD2 and finally winning one(1) run after the big patch, I’m calmer now, I just needed to get out of my head a bit. Please don’t bring any of this up to me, it just reopens the self-hatred wound, I’m just typing this so nobody thinks I had beef with anyone or whatever else someone can imagine. I didn’t mean to worry anyone, it won’t happen again.
Unrelated to anything, people on the official DD discord found out how to open the 3d models in blender!! I’m having a blast looking at the models, I might post some 3d references for y’all once I stop feeling so sluggish all day.
#blog stuff#me nerding about the generator details for 4 paragraphs#I don't need venting. I need distraction.#I don't have a 'personal' tag so this is going into:#darnest answers

Now, here are my thoughts on last week's questions...
Tuesday, I asked about Zootopia 2. To be honest I didn't even know it was a thing until I started looking up possible sequels to recent 3D films. I have seen and love the first film and hope the second is just as entertaining.
Thursday, I asked about a possible Coco 2. Now I have only seen pits and pieces of this film. The funniest clip I watched was the bell scene lol. I made me think of Taco Bell and also the bell tower scene in the 90's Batman movie. So, coming from me if they make a sequel to this film; once again I hope its as entertaining as the first film.
Sunday, I asked about certain franchises appealing to certain folks. Now I don't mean a target audience, I mean those outside of the target audience. I guess like with most things it simple draws on something within us. I know for me I'm drawn to horror franchises even though I can barely stand to do scary things now lol.
Have a great day and week my friends.

THE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION #46 30th December (TRANSLATION)
“Dir en grey MV shooting with 3D realistic avatars”
Appearance:
Kaoru (DIR EN GREY direngrey.co.jp/)
Joe Yokomizo (Writer / DJ)
Tasai Reporter (Tokyo Sports)
God ?
Notes before reading: This is a translation of The Freedom of Expression #46 uploaded last 30th December. Originally, I planned to upload this before the 31st livestream but in the end I couldn’t, so even if we know now how the 3D avatar MV looks like, I still want to share it here before finishing the livestream report.
Please don’t forget to subscribe to their channel and watch their actual video to support the program.
Feel free to correct me if you spot any mistake or any confusing parts. ------ *In 2021, The Freedom of Expression will be uploaded on Wednesdays* Kaoru: Hello, this is Kaoru from Dir en grey…The Freedom of Expression is starting this time…. this week again…. Joe-san…. Tasai-san…. I feel like it’s being a while…. Joe: That’s true…. Tasai: That’s true… Kaoru: There was that program (we filmed) at that location…. *Kaoru means The Freedom of Expression #42 and #45* Joe&Tasai: Yes, yes…. Kaoru: And the time we recorded 4 programs on a row…. Joe: Ah, that’s right… Kaoru: We were free for a while… Joe: We were…. Nothing changed? Kaoru: Nothing changed, yes… Joe: It also seems like Tasai was busy as well…. Tasai: That’s right. I saw the two of you before at the Niconico livestream…. *Kaoru appeared as a guest on Joe Yokomizo’s channel last 10th Dec* Joe&Kaoru: Ah! Joe: Thank you so much for watching! Thank you for writing an article about it immediately! *Tasai uploaded an article about the livestream at Tokyo Sports website* Tasai: I worked while feeling jealous of you two…. Joe: No, rather than that, wasn’t the Tokyo Sports sweatshirt, or rather hoodie wore in a great shape? Tasai: Yes, thanks to you guys it’s going to be sold…. Joe: No,no….it’s thanks to Kaoru…. Kaoru: No,no…not at all…. Joe: Please make something for the second anniversary of the channel (Joe Yokomizo channel)…. Tasai: It seems that we will do a T-shirt collaboration again…. Joe: Oh! Kaoru: I’m looking forward to it. Joe: Someday, a collaboration set with The Freedom of Expression…. Tasai: Right? Joe: Yes. Tasai: Then, we could sell it… Joe: Sell it…. Tasai: And to go Okinawa…. Joe: Go to Okinawa? The three of them laugh. Joe: The plan is steadily progressing to that objective…. Tasai: The three of us…. Joe: Please….. (I hope that happens someday)….. Kaoru: So, back to the topic…..can you read the it?.... Joe: Yes, I can…..yes, this is another piece of good news….. *on screen* Title: “Dir en grey MV shooting with 3D realistic avatars” -Announced a MV created by shooting members with a 3D scanner. “The World You Live In” screening events were sold out on the same day that went on sale. In response to that, an online screening event called “The World You Live In ” -additional-“ will be streamed. With a special talk in which members will also appear, a music video created with characters using real avatars created with a 3D scanner will be screened. The song used for this will be their first digital single "Ochita koto no aru sora” that Dir en grey released in August this year. The scenes of the members performing are scanned, so it is possible to create scenes in various places. Joe: So, Kaoru…. Kaoru: Thank you for reading it…. Joe: This is really good news.…. Kaoru: Originally, the programs are uploaded on Friday…but we uploaded this earlier so we can talk about this….so this time it feels a little bit irregular…. Joe: An irregular update…. Tasai: But it’s ok…. Kaoru: Well, of course, I’ve already watched it…. Joe: You did? How was it? Kaoru: First, we took pictures, we got our makeup done, we took some body impressions and…. then, this thing…. how is it called?.... with a 360 degrees camera….then in another studio…another time…we wore clothes with dots….and then…..we played air….*kaoru plays air guitar* Joe: I see….You did as if you were performing…. Tasai: Ohh…. Kaoru: Then, with the pictures they took…. Joe: Sounds quite hard…. Kaoru: No, we were done in a moment…. Joe: Is that so? Kaoru: The pictures that were taken of me with my outfit….it was just a click, then the light and “yes, we are done”. Kaoru makes a comment about makeup. Joe: Maybe it would had been better to get more shoots… “Actually, how are the avatars going to be?” (top screen) Joe: When it was already done… Kaoru: The atmosphere of it….it feels like being inside a game…. Tasai: What about the outfits? Kaoru: It’s impossible to do with the outfits on…. Of course, you can do it if you take time to shoot like that…. Tasai: I see. Kaoru: But well…. Joe: It was done that way this time….as this comes out, naturally the first thing that comes to my mind is Kokoromi* *Kokoromi (ココロ見) TV program that has been broadcast irregularly since 2010 on NHK BS Premium. This program dedicated one episode to Hiroshi Ishiguro, director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, part of the Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University * Kaoru: That’s it…. Joe: It’s like you had the opportunity to do that…. Kaoru: Somehow, it was like….” we can do something like this”…..”is it going to be hard?”….. Joe: It’s like, you had a suggestion, and then it seemed possible to be done…. Kaoru: “So let’s try to do it” Joe: That is…. Tasai: I’m really looking forward to the screening…. Kaoru explains that for the recreation of his movements, he had to play holding his guitar higher than usual due to the pointers (dots) he had on him to capture the movements. Joe laughs and imitates Kaoru when he shows the position, he did to be able to do the procedure, playing the guitar chest high. Joe: Higher than usual…*playing air guitar at chest-high, Kaoru burst into laughter* “One of the highlights is the position of the guitar?” (top screen) Kaoru: When I saw it, I was thinking that…..”that’s really high!”*laughs* Joe: But the position of your guitar was like if another person was shooting instead of you... Kaoru: No, holding it up that way felt like when I play bass at home…. Joe: I see… Joe makes a joke about the photographer having to take his picture holding the guitar like that. Joe: Did the other members have to change it as well? Or just you? Because of that pointer…. Kaoru says that he thinks he is the only one who had to change. Joe: But Die plays guitar holding it really low…. Kaoru: That’s true… “About other members shooting” (on screen) Kaoru explains that he was watching the process and saw some impressions moving, like the shape of a person (before being completed) Kaoru: I saw just that, and I was like “Ah, Die!”…when I saw the appearance…..it gave me chills… Joe is curious about how they did the procedure with the drums. Kaoru explains that they took pictures of the drum set to reproduce a similar shape. Joe: Weren’t the drums the hardest (instrument)? Kaoru: Maybe…. Joe insists that the drums must had been hard to capture for the process. Then, he goes back to Kaoru holding the guitar chest high. He says that playing the guitar in a lower position is cool, Kaoru agrees. Joe adds that there are many guitarists that play the guitar like that, but he thinks there isn’t any that plays it that high (chest, almost shoulder, high lol) Kaoru: Not many…. Joe: Then, the song is the single… Kaoru: Yes Tasai: You are using (for this) the latest single “Ochita koto no aru sora”…. Joe: Doing this mv once again in this way, see the reactions again… Kaoru: As it took more time to do, it’s like a polished-up version…. Joe: It’s like a new creation…..I’m looking forward to it…. “From 23:00 on 31/12” (on screen)” Kaoru explains how the stream is going to be. First, the performance, then the videos and later, a talk with the members. That it’s going to be the flow. Joe says he is looking forward to it, jokes about Kaoru playing guitar high chest. Kaoru wonders why God hasn’t say anything yet. Joe: God, are you there? God: I am! God is here! They laugh and “scold” him for not saying anything God: I already saw it! (the video) Joe: Did you? Tasai: Did God already see it too? God: I did, I did… Joe: But it’s because you are God, right? He is different from humans. Kaoru: As he is God, he can see everything, everywhere…. God: As I’m God, I have that power… Joe: Do you have that power? God: Yes….it was interesting…it looked interesting and cool…. Joe: Did you realized that Kaoru was playing his guitar that high? God: I didn’t pay much attention to that…. Joe: Is that so? Do you have any favourite part or a part that attracted your attention? God: Well, that’s right. The footage is good after all but, the song is good because after all, Dir en grey is good at writing songs…. They burst into laughs. Kaoru: Thank you *laughs* God: I think they are talented…. Kaoru: “They are good”*imitating God* Joe: You said they are good at it….like they are talented…. God: That’s because I’m God…. Joe: That’s right….you are a pro yourself…. What about other aspects such as the visuals or the song?.... God: It was fun…. Joe: Ah, it was fun….thank you for telling us… Tasai: God should also get an avatar (of himself)…. Joe: That’s right… Kaoru: indeed…. Joe: But we haven’t seen his appearance ever…. God: I can't show it yet…. Kaoru: We should do an avatar of him…. Joe: Right? It’s a possibility…. Kaoru: I think that Tasai could draw it (God’s avatar)…. *God's avatar drawn by reporter Tasai* (top screen) Joe: He has the skills….it’s legendary…. Kaoru: It’s legendary…. Joe: Then, let’s do that! Kaoru: Draw how you imagine him…. Tasai: My image of God…. Joe: We could draw him together… Kaoru talks about his face and so when God cuts in. God: God is just an old man, right? Kaoru: An old man? We got that…. The three of them laugh and start discussing about an idea of a story to draw. Tasai: You tell me that story, and I imagine it and then I draw it… Kaoru: An avatar of God…. Joe: An avatar of God……we could do a meeting with a screening and a talk…. The three of them laugh. Kaoru: Then, next year we are doing it again, from February….a screening of a live ‘Meguro Rock-May-Kan GIG’…..well it’s a concert film screening tour around the country….. Joe: And there will be a talk with the members? Kaoru: I think so…. Kaoru: So that’s it…. Joe: That’s it, right? Kaoru: Well, tomorrow, I hope you all can watch the livestream…. Joe: That’s it….don’t miss it/stay tuned…. Kaoru: Well, I think it’s time to end the program…..Please subscribe to the channel…. Joe: Please subscribe…. Kaoru: Thank you for watching….! Tasai: Thank you for watching! God: Thank you for watching!
