The Ontario government's proposal to close supervised drug consumption sites(opens in a new tab) may affect more facilities than initially expected, hitting programs that attend to thousands of potentially deadly overdoses a year, as lawyers doubt whether the move is constitutional.
A review by CTV News Toronto of federal government data shows that the sites slated to close because they are within 200 metres of a school or daycare help, on average, more than three people survive overdoses each day in Toronto and almost six a day across Ontario – a good first estimate of the number of people who may die without these programs, experts say.
"As a public health researcher, I feel quite confident in saying that if we cut supervised injection sites and supervised consumption sites in the province of Ontario, there will be increases in fatal overdose rates because we know from the research just how much these services have an impact and how much they do save lives," assistant professor Gillian Kolla said in an interview.

my old prehistory professor promised me earlier that he would soon take me on a trip to the Beskid Mountains, where he wants to fix one of sins from his youth.... but then he went silent. so i reminded him about it, and he just sent me an email that he is planning to leave on tuesday morning and that i have to decide quicklu if i want to go bc it's "high time we bough tickets and booked a place in the mountain shelter" xD we will climb the highest peak there to verify a potential archaeological site :3
i love that despite being over 70yo he still has a very youthful spirit <3 and all his plans look like this, made in the very last minute
#idk if my friends will go with us bc they currently work on a ????? uhm construction site. as ??? archaeological supervision???? no idea how#is it called in english#but they stand in front of an excavator to see if it uncovers any features and artefacts#and whenever wooden constructions appaer they have to stop the work and document these finds#so they're afraid that if they decide to go with me after they come back there will be nothing there#they reached medieval layers now#and polish law is fucked up so it gives too much power to the developers#they can fire their archaeologists without any good reasons#for example if the archaeologist decides to stop work to rescue all uncovered artefacts :)#they work for 12 h a day just to save as much as they can#bc they're local patriots and this project is very important for them#bc after it's done they will have documentation of a 700 m long profile.... the whole historical town that they love so much#they won't earn a penny lol they gave the lowest price just to get the chance to be there#either way i'm excited#it would be better to go together bc i really like them but it will be okay either way#moje

I know everyone thinks that they're the only competent person at their job . . . but genuinely am I the ONLY person at this jobsite with functioning brain cells
#the ceiling guys have been hounding us for WEEKS about our cable tray being too low#my coworker has re-worked it 3 times. they went to put the ceiling up today and it's STILL too low#so i had to fix it because apparently SOMEONE can't read a fucking tape measure#the drywallers also had to cut apart a bunch of drywall so my coworker could fix some switches that got fucked up#the drywallers are fucking PISSED and frankly they have the right to be. the wall was plastered and painted ffs#and then my foreman discovered that a place where he put a bunch of boxes was going to inaccessible so the boxes need to be moved#and then he didn't relay that information to anyone else so i caught two other coworkers trying to add boxes to that area#two apprentices tried coring through a wall without a bucket to catch the water from the cooling system and almost flooded the floor#that's not their fault. they should have had a fucking journeyman with them but my company is too cheap to hire enough journeymen#the lack of apprentice supervision is becoming a SERIOUS problem at this job site#i've always liked working at this company but i am beginning to consider jumping ship when i make journeyman this spring

thw titanic submarine drama is like poetry to me
#have you heard about paul henri nargeolet???#he's a french oceanographer and maritime expert and was on board as an authority on the titanic#and his life revolved around the titanic in that he's been on at least 35 dives and led several expeditions to the wreckage site and#has worked with several public institutions by supervising the recovery of thousands of artifacts from the wreck#he has written books about his research on the titanic and the ecosystem that is developing in its ruins#and now he's sitting in a coffin however many miles under the sea together with four billionaires that hired him as essentially a tour guid#while they're all waiting for the oxygen to run out. so basically the ship he devoted most of his life to it now going to be the cause of#his death. some tragic irony#whatever i hope they dont find them

A new bill in the capitol would legalize safe spaces to use drugs.
The bill would allow the Department of Human Services to license what the bill calls “Overdose Prevention Sites.” People could go to these locations and use illegal drugs under direct supervision, with no fear of criminal prosecution.
Right now, they are far from common in the United States. Rhode Island is the only state to legalize them, but New York City and several other cities have them. A pair of lawmakers are saying those spaces are the next logical step as the state tries to curb overdose deaths.
Opioid overdoses continue to be a leading cause of accidental deaths in the state for those between the ages of 18 and 49. In 2021, 3,013 people died from overdoses. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-Chicago), said supervised injection sites are a logical step to help curb those numbers.
“Why would we turn our backs on people struggling with a substance use disorder saying, ‘no, we don’t want to allow space for you,'” Ford said. “‘We would rather see you die on the streets.'”
Taylorville Police Chief Dwayne Wheeler takes his own unique approach to helping people who are suffering from addiction. The Taylorville Safe Passage program has helped hundreds of people get clean before they get in trouble with the law. The increased supervision is a sensible idea for Wheeler, but he is skeptical of the ramifications that come with giving people a safe space to use.
“There’s a lot of work to be done,” Wheeler said. “But let’s treat the people.”
Ford said in an ideal situation, there would be treatment options available at these facilities.
“I think we should have the debate to make sure that when we have overdose prevention sites, that they’re not places where people just go use drugs,” Ford said. “It’s the place where people go and get the help that they need while struggling with a substance use disorder.”
But the bill does not require those services. At a minimum, the bill would require these facilities to have a clean space to use, have naloxone to help people survive an overdose, staff that can help people who are in the middle of an overdose and equipment like fentanyl testing strips. It also would give legal immunity to people who use in those facilities.
Wheeler’s Safe Passage program gives people the opportunity to come into the police department and say they need help. It’s gained state wide acclaim, and even earned his department a $250,000 grant from the state to expand.
The program prioritizes getting people to treatment centers. It relies on people to take that first step and admit they need help, and once they take that step, the department — and it’s long list of volunteers — will drive that person to whatever rehab center they can find a spot in, no matter where it is in the state.
He said if the state is going to allow supervised injection sites, they need to carefully design the program, and make sure it leaves no questions unanswered on how it would work.
There is data that shows supervised injection sites have positive impacts, but they also come with societal ramifications, including arguments over where the sites will be located.
“Illinois should answer the call, knowing that this is the best harm reduction tool that we have in our toolbox,” Ford said. “When you look at overdose prevention sites, and you look at other harm reduction tools, this is the number one harm reduction tool that has proven to save lives across the world.”
This is not the first time the proposal has made its way around the Capitol, but it hasn’t found any traction in past years. So far, the bill has not been voted on in any committees.

The criminalization of substance use has been detrimental to society in every way, and realistic harm reduction methods and policies with decriminalization and supervised use would either eliminate entirely, or decrease drastically all the issues that come from substance use
But not like how oregon did it, more like Portugal, though i havent read up on their policies or effectiveness of their decriminalization in years. Providing resources and medically regulated even the hardest drugs would solve the social community health crisis of substance use

Younger people online don’t understand, it wasn’t even that it was worse, I think nowadays cyber bullying is so so much worse but back then it was just a different kind
And people didn’t give a shit, no one cared and no one took you seriously because it’s “just on the computer”
I took basically a 6 year break from any kind of fandom/furry/art social media from the time I was 12-19 (I was still online but as myself like with my name, outside of furry circles as I was still repressing that part of me partially due to the amount of hate I got as a literal child over it) and coming back in just that time so much has changed for the better and it moves me so much… when I was a kid there was so much worry about making your OC “realistic” and “not a Mary Sue”; if you had a self insert or selfship character you were a loser, if you shipped a gay pairing there was genuine homophobia launched at you just for liking a gay ship
That’s to say nothing of any kind of weird, avant garde, or dark art/fic. Even the most vanilla non offensive stuff made you a target. And it was seen as normal. Like I remember a time when furries, fujoshis, otaku etc were genuinely hated. They still are by some people but there’s so much more love and acceptance and community now. It warms my heart deeply. There are still many problems, some old and some new and some things have gotten worse but the freedom of self expression and self exploration, even if it’s “cringe” is so much more prevalent now and it fills me with hope
I would never want to return to 2000s internet!
Attempting to articulate a concern I have in the simplest way possible
#I would say kids being exposed to dark/shocking/inappropriate content was worse back then but#I honestly think it’s actually worse now#that all the kid-designated spaces like MMOs flash game sites etc are gone#plus more kids have phones and at younger ages with LESS parental supervision#and even tho I saw some fucked up stuff online#I was still monitored and had limited internet time#plus I would say the racists/homophobes/misogynists etc were more brazen back then but let’s be real they are louder now than ever :(#still I feel in many ways things are getting better

A forthcoming law that will force the closure of supervised drug consumption sites near schools and daycares will also affect sites in Toronto homeless shelters, the province confirmed to CBC News. Last week, Premier Doug Ford's government said it would ban supervised consumption sites — which allow people to inject, snort or otherwise take street drugs under supervision to reduce the risk of overdose — within 200 metres of schools and child-care centres. In total, 10 facilities across the province will be forced to stop providing these services by the end of March 2025. Five of them are in Toronto. While no homeless shelters were included on the list, a spokesperson for the provincial health ministry told CBC Toronto that sites within homeless shelters will also have to close.

Hmm...I guess WRT Terzo's and Copia's relationship, it's less that they have to keep it a SECRET per se and more that they need to keep it from getting back to anyone who would know they were related. Which, yes, DOES look very much like having to keep it a secret, but when I know that the specific undesired scenario is not "other people know" but "specific other people know, or the people who know tell those people", it lets me be more specific in the setup and circumstances.
#vyvian.op#textpost#incest cw#i think the actual degree of secrecy they have to apply to the relationship depends on what settings they spend most of their time in#e.g. they'd have to act different in places supervised by the ministry than off-site potentially
