This book centers around half brother Amaury de Vries who feels both very betrayed and lost. As he had been surrounded in a life of wealth and nobles most of his life and leading the life of Knight who won purses for the sport of jousting and protecting damsels in distress. That is until recently finding out the rich noble he thought was his father was a lie, being told the truth at his biological mercenary father’s funeral. He has no choice but to join his half brother in Scotland living the life of a mercenary for survival. This is very different from the noble life he led these past fifteen years. The heroine of this story we met in book one who is the friend of Amaury’s half brother Maximilian’s wife Alys. Where there were accusations made that Elizabeth and her sisters were witches. She was also escaping a forced marriage by her Uncle to a man she did not desire or want to marry.

Now her betrothed had hired two brutes to bring her back, but Amaury his falcon, dogs, and a hired Squire,8m rescue her. It was right before she would have been terribly abused too. Except Elizabeth who distrusts all men did not trust them because of her past. Plus she is furious that Amaury still wants to return her to a betrothed that she does not want to marry! She assumes he is no worse than the brutes who had kidnapped her and it is all for a handsome reward.

The other problem is they are both very attracted to one another. Of course Amaury feels he has nothing to offer for his life as a mercenary and wants to return to France. Trying to win her trust he gives Elizabeth lessons in defending herself. He soon realizes how her Uncle betrayed her father’s memory not caring for their people and letting go of all the servants and Knights in the household. On top it soon is revealed why her betrothed desired this match. Soon Amaury knows he must protect the woman he loves no matter what the risk. Will Amaury return to France? Will Elizabeth be forced in a loveless marriage? Will she be harmed before Amaury can save her. Will these two star crossed lovers open their hearts? Read and find out.

I have been reading Claire Delacroix books for over twenty years and for good reason. She always writes novels filled with so many twists and turns plus with great chemistry with her swoon worthy heroes and sassy heroines. I am also a big fan of medieval settings and find some bits and pieces of true history too. I loved both the hero and heroine have been previously betrayed and felt perhaps they weren’t good enough for each other. Plus I loved howAmaury tries to help build confidence in the timid Elizabeth too. A captivating read revealing Knights in shining armor still exist too.

A book I highly recommend and look forward to the next book in this magnificent series.
