Worst part about the crowd strike thing is ppl that havnt touched a single line of code making the worst takes known to man and getting 3k likes and when you try to correct them they call you a "tech bootlicker"
#the reason why so many companies use windows for systems#is that each os is different#one thing that works on windows might not work on a mac#windows is the industry standard because it been around for a long time and ppl are used to it#so it makes sense to devolp an application for a platform people are familiar with#i have problems with this but whatever#what im really mad at id ppl who think its windows fault#like i dont think thr devolpers of windows would enticipate a header full of zeros#on bootup#like you should be FURIOUS at cloudstrike for idk#testing the damn update before putting it out????#like that is soooo esasy to spot#also uf i remember correctly something similar happened with macafee and windows xp#a really expensive bug that plumetted macafees stock#and the technical director#i think#is now the ceo of uou guessed it cloudstrike!!!#windows is not at fault here!!!!!#anyway i am very. normal. about cyber security#braindump

uploading stuff to tonic water's toyhouse page and I saw my stupid creepypasta photoshops in his gallery again. i for sure never posted these here and thats a crime. so im rectifying that now
#the absolutely obliterated delibird never fails to make me laugh a bit its so visceral im so sorry#gore#blood#tagging those because i dont want to just jumpscare ppl in the pokemon tags even if its just pixels#stantler#delibird#pokemon#doodlebyte#lucabytetalks#if you want to know what the whole stantler thing (and thus tonic water in general) is about its that sometime in 2019 i decided to#calculatedly choose a pokemon i thought was like. one of the most overlooked. but still from an early gen so it would have a bunch of#basically obligatory merchandise for me to collect. so just. most boring possible guy in gen 2.... and then i just increasingly found#them funnier and funnier. i do have like a genuinely pretty bulky collection of stantler merch. BUT ITS ALL THE SAME 1-2 STOCK ART OVER#AND OVER AGAIN. SO ITS JUST REALLY FUNNY. JUST NOTHING BUT THE SAME 1 BORING STANDING POSE.#and then tonic water himself is just . an oc . hes funny to me. hes just really vile and should probably be put down for like.#having repeatedly attacked people unprompted. but his trainer likes him despite them basically having a straight man/sicko dynamic#this is my childhood ds lite btw sometimes it crashes on bootup on a white screen. which is rlly helpful for photoshops

cringe: I like to think what if the Alisa Drag butchered in tt2 survived and was like a second Alisa who imprinted on Dragunov and tuned her programming and therefore, personality to fit with his mannerisms and aesthetics. The result was a colder/quieter Alisa. And then what if she met "Lars's" Alisa and they were nearly polar opposites but also kind of friends
#this cringe ass stuff is not going in the tags lmao#anyway that's the reason for the flowers in the strap of my dragunov's hat hehe#in my hc Alisa subtly mimics whoever she spent the most time with on first bootup so she better fits with them as a bodyguard in theory#but still has somewhat of her own free will and basic personality programming#and yes I have that Alisa as a custom outfit. that's my cringe 'tekken fc'#it's funny too because when I first played 6 I gravitated towards playing as Drag. And made my Alisa companion sort of edgy lol#.alisaii#.dragu

I LOVE OUR SIMPLE TALKS (SoraThePanFloof/Boot-up Cover)
More music! "I Love Our Simple Talks" is a cover of "Simple Talk", originally composed by @sorathepanfloof for his indie animation series Boot-Up!. It is a radical show that whose talented crew you should support!
It's a bit late but I was delighted to hear it play in the background of its most recent episode, "Origins". Thank you Sora!
This was the first track I put together in GarageBand of the year and was made hastily to commemorate the 20th birthday of one of the show's main characters, Tera Plexo, back in the 6th of February.

now that I've hacked both my 3DS and Vita I can say, while all the people who take the time to make guides online have been nothing but kind and helpful, there is such a difference in expectations between the two communities lol. When I wanted to make custom themes for my 3DS there were so many community-built tools available for the computer to help you put things together while having basically zero technical knowledge. I try to do the same for my Vita and the guides I do find are like "anyway so obviously you know XML" and just go from there like they haven't already lost me
#was fighting for my life last night trying to figure out a plugin that lets you change the text on bootup#like where the epilepsy warning would usually go it now displays my contact information in case my vita gets lost#really good and easy to do once i figured it out#but it was so hard to find a guide that jist told you straight up what you actually needed to do#i had to download notepad ++ and encode it which i need someone to tell me to do lmao don't assume i know that please#reilly.txt

I need tech help friends!!
I got this laptop from a dear friend. When I got it the OS wasn't functioning properly. I tried to do a system reset. I tried hard reset and everything failed and now it's stuck on a loop for the loading screen at bootup.
My sister gave me a usb to try booting and reinstalling Windows but it's NOT working. The usb has many other files on so I think maybe that's the issue?
I can't remove anything from it and I can't boot from it. Idk what to do. It's in perfect condition otherwise and I'd hade to just discard it. Please help!! I don't know what to do.
I may love Penelope Garcia but I am definitely not her.

yeah it's fun to say "they're bricked" but a bricked computer is as responsive as a brick - like, nothing happens. no BSOD. just. nothing.
a crowdstruck computer still tries to boot (note: a brick does not try to boot. it just sits there utterly nonresponsive), it just fails to. you can interrupt the booting process, go to safe mode (how to get to safe mode varies by windows version and idk how to do a modern windows without looking it up because i don't do windows no mo)...
but to go to safe mode, you have to physically be at the computer. the notion is that physical access is the last bastion of security; the only way to seriously mess with a computer that's not otherwise compromised is via direct contact.
this means you can't do it over the network...
idk if people on tumblr know about this but a cybersecurity software called crowdstrike just did what is probably the single biggest fuck up in any sector in the past 10 years. it's monumentally bad. literally the most horror-inducing nightmare scenario for a tech company.
some info, crowdstrike is essentially an antivirus software for enterprises. which means normal laypeople cant really get it, they're for businesses and organisations and important stuff.
so, on a friday evening (it of course wasnt friday everywhere but it was friday evening in oceania which is where it first started causing damage due to europe and na being asleep), crowdstrike pushed out an update to their windows users that caused a bug.
before i get into what the bug is, know that friday evening is the worst possible time to do this because people are going home. the weekend is starting. offices dont have people in them. this is just one of many perfectly placed failures in the rube goldburg machine of crowdstrike. there's a reason friday is called 'dont push to live friday' or more to the point 'dont fuck it up friday'
so, at 3pm at friday, an update comes rolling into crowdstrike users which is automatically implemented. this update immediately causes the computer to blue screen of death. very very bad. but it's not simply a 'you need to restart' crash, because the computer then gets stuck into a boot loop.
this is the worst possible thing because, in a boot loop state, a computer is never really able to get to a point where it can do anything. like download a fix. so there is nothing crowdstrike can do to remedy this death update anymore. it is now left to the end users.
it was pretty quickly identified what the problem was. you had to boot it in safe mode, and a very small file needed to be deleted. or you could just rename crowdstrike to something else so windows never attempts to use it.
it's a fairly easy fix in the grand scheme of things, but the issue is that it is effecting enterprises. which can have a looooot of computers. in many different locations. so an IT person would need to manually fix hundreds of computers, sometimes in whole other cities and perhaps even other countries if theyre big enough.
another fuck up crowdstrike did was they did not stagger the update, so they could catch any mistakes before they wrecked havoc. (and also how how HOW do you not catch this before deploying it. this isn't a code oopsie this is a complete failure of quality ensurance that probably permeates the whole company to not realise their update was an instant kill). they rolled it out to everyone of their clients in the world at the same time.
and this seems pretty hilarious on the surface. i was havin a good chuckle as eftpos went down in the store i was working at, chaos was definitely ensuring lmao. im in aus, and banking was literally down nationwide.
but then you start hearing about the entire country's planes being grounded because the airport's computers are bricked. and hospitals having no computers anymore. emergency call centres crashing. and you realised that, wow. crowdstrike just killed people probably. this is literally the worst thing possible for a company like this to do.
crowdstrike was kinda on the come up too, they were starting to become a big name in the tech world as a new face. but that has definitely vanished now. to fuck up at this many places, is almost extremely impressive. its hard to even think of a comparable fuckup.
a friday evening simultaneous rollout boot loop is a phrase that haunts IT people in their darkest hours. it's the monster that drags people down into the swamp. it's the big bag in the horror movie. it's the end of the road. and for crowdstrike, that reaper of souls just knocked on their doorstep.
#do they have remote keyboard access devices any more?#i may still have an old networked rs232 thingy that let me do keyboard stuff to the console over the network but that was so long ago#i have to imagine you can bridge a usb connection over the internet so you can have a remote keyboard so your F8 during bootup goes though

This is about my TV head project btw-
Trying to modify/work with Linux while having no idea of how it works is like. The weirdest thing I've done. I feel like any time I touch my little RPi minicomputer I'm doing surgery with google and a pair of kiddie safe scissors, and an extreme amount of caution. Like I know that one wrong move can kill this thing, but also the OS has GOT to be more stable than that, it's meant for hobbyists after all.
And at the end of it instead of doing what I intended I learnt about six new things about code and Linux that I never intended to use o(-(
#all I need now is for my one program to run as root on bootup#as soon as I turn on the power I need it to run. then I'm good#everything else is going acording to plan-ish#interestposting#comedyposting#linux
