People were not something that Motonari had taken very much of a liking to. They had cursed him, cast him out and disowned him. Perhaps that was for the better— to show true colours early so that he might be spared of the dreadful fate of becoming too attached— after all, keep everyone out and never get hurt. It was isolating, sure, lonely at times, but none of those was reasons enough for him to lower the walls a lifetime of people spent reinforcing. ‘No more hurt,’ he repeated to himself like a mantra the last time someone close to him betrayed him.
However fate was a fickle thing and no matter how much he tried to hate her, and distance himself he just… couldn't.
He had met her on his first day back in Azuchi in the foreign market sector. She was by no means anything special, and had the event not transpired he wouldn't even have glanced her way twice. She was of medium build, well kept, a princess type, Motonari concluded, but boy oh boy did she know how to haggle.
"That'll be 20 gold coins." Greg, the market local sketch ball tried his luck with the lass.
"Hell no, this cloth is worth 2, if even that much," she glared at the man from across the counter, unrelenting with arms crossed and chest puffed.
Motonari stopped on his way, smile wide on his face with an inkling of concern shining in his eyes as he watched Greg work his magic to scam yet another poor defenceless noble.
"20, and for disrespecting me, you can throw in that pretty face of yours." He sneered at her, eyes glancing up and down in a way that always made Motonari shiver in disgust. Nothing new there, men were animals, and those possessing any form of power above their opponent would not hesitate to take and destroy. It solidified his hatred for humanity, how the weak were defenceless but to get trampled on.
Motonari turned away, and began walking off to continue on with his business, he didn't want to see the rest, but damn that idiot for hexing him with curiosity and a little sympathy? He should leave her be, let her learn the cruelties of the world on her own, everyone has to at some point, right? Not his monkey, not his circus. So why, why on God's green earth was he now walking back only to be…. gobsmacked.
"Merda," the words fell from his lips at the sight
The woman's arms snugly secured around the sleazeball Greg's neck, the man completely knocked off his feet and at the mercy of the slinky woman.
"Beg for forgiveness and I might consider sparing you," she threatened with a dangerous glint and by the sea gods, Motonari had never felt his heart race as much as watching the scene unfold. She was far more feisty and bold than he had first given her credit for, perhaps he was too quick to judge her by the fine threads she wore. Dishevelled hair cascading over her face and neck, like a veil, did nothing to mask the flickering anger, and for the first time, Motonari found that he couldn’t take his eyes off her.
"S-sorry, take the f-fabric and leave," the poor sot pleaded, scrambling back into the shop's corners like a cowardice rat. Motonari couldn't help but grin wildly— about time someone put that ass in his place.
She threw the coins down with an easy shrug and turned on her heel as if she hadn't just handed the man's ass to him, "let that be a lesson to treat women with respect." And that was the final straw tipping Motonari into snorted laughter.
She glided past him only meeting his eyes momentarily, a glint of a threat lingering within them, before trodding off. While she was pretty as a flower but, one look into those feisty eyes spoke of the thorns hidden beneath the petals. His heart stopped in his chest yet somehow he managed to pull up his lips enough for a smirk.
Unbeknown to Motonari that brief moment had planted a seed in his brain, and with each passing meeting had watered and nourished it until the vines of love gripped tightly at his heart.
"Ay caramba, please tell me you're not going to jump," he broke the solace of the silver night, a thin stream of smoke huffed from his lips as he approached her silhouette.
"What no! I'm just waiting for a shooting star," she smiled at him with crinkled eyes, "plus I'm sure you would catch me if I fell." She continued with a playful wink of both eyes, bringing about a smug grin.
"Yer crazy you know that," he said, flicking the sig on the side of the road and hoisting himself up beside her.
"I'd let you fall to your death and steal yer loot," he said with a tip of his proud chin as he poked the lines of her forehead. Never, never would he let her fall, and if she allowed, he’d never let her go. Where she went, he would surely follow, if only to protect her against herself. She did, after all, have a habit of getting herself into all sorts of trouble.
"Flattery will get you everywhere," her grin widened as her head turned upward to the sky.
"Why yer really out here flower girl?" He asked following suit. Before her, he had never thought much of the stars other than constellations guiding his journey at sea, but now, now they were like glowing jewels in the endless crystal ocean. Absolutely breathtaking.
"What? On the wall, or far from home?" She teased in that snarky voice of hers that Motonari had come to appreciate, although not particularly in this moment. He scoffed and dragged a hand through his silver hair at the lack of an answer.
"Just wanted to be alone for a little while," she finally said.
"Then I'll leave ya to it," he responded almost immediately, gripping the wall beneath his fingertips. He'd do anything for her at this point, and god he hated the hold she had over his heart, over his emotions. But if opening his heart once more meant enduring the risk of hurt he had come to accept it. As long as it was her
"N-NO!" She practically shouted out, and Motonari stilled in his movements, "I mean n-no, no, stay, please. I-i like being alone with you." The words drifted in the wind like the sweet fragrance of spring.
He flashed her a sly grin, "damn m'lady yer didn't have to shout, I can hear just fine." He teased to mask the shaky released breath, ruby eyes never once leaving her moonlit face. Her brows were indented and her nose wrinkled like it so often did when she stressed herself silly.
"What's that flower brain of yours so desperate to wish for anyways? Some sunshine? Though it seems you have enough heat from those cheeks of yers." He pinched at her warm cheeks stifling a laugh as her cheeks began to puff and warm more with each passing second.
She turned away sharply, causing Motonari’s laugh to deepen. He couldn't help but tease especially when she always reacted with such a cute reaction. Seeing the smile back on her face calmed the storm brewing in his chest.
"Hmpf, as if I am going to tell you now," she lifted her chin in a huff.
"No need, that face of yers is telling enough. So tell me princess, you wishing I'd spend the night ravishing you," he came in close, face mere millimetres from hers. Wrapping his haori snuggly around her shoulders to protect her from the cold evening's breeze— he found that despite the tease his own breath hitched at the proximity. If it were anyone else he may have been repulsed, fearful even, that they may commit the heinous act of touching him. But with her, he was at ease, and while he never stated as much out loud she respected his boundaries and he hers. She had gained his utter and complete trust, an honour that none in his life had gained thus far.
"Be serious will you," she swatted at him, before smiling wildly, as long fingers gripping the haori closed.
"Oh I'm completely serious, m’lady," he continued, admiring the way she drowned in his oversized clothing.
"You are horrible," she rolled her eyes, getting to her feet. Forever unpredictable, she never ceased to keep Motonari on his toes. She was like the ocean he loved so much, changing direction at the drop of a coin, and he was helpless but to yield to wherever those wild waves may take him.
Balancing on the brick wall she took a stance just as Mitsuhide had taught her in the early days of her time at the castle and drew swords.
"I wished for a worthy opponent. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." She squealed in delight drawing the thin short sword.
While Motonari had no idea who Inigo was nor any memory of killing her father he played along anyway. Jumping to his feet he easily blocked the first strike. His red eyes stained with delight as he blocked her, moving in synch with her, holding a strong defence, "Bold of yer to think you could beat a pirate m'lady."
"Bold of you to assume I couldn't. I'll defeat you and steal your treasure, you swashbuckling pirate!" She declared jumping from the wall, to gain some distance, a smile never leaving her face.
Motonari followed suit, knocking the sword from her hand with a cocky grin. "Now what were you saying about stolen treasure, loco flower?"
She crossed her arms and muttered a grunt, "I'll steal it when you're not looking."
"Silly flower yer can't steal what you already possess," Motonari laughed in triumph leaving his words to hang in the air as he sheathed his sword and began walking off. He blamed her for spreading the seeds of hope and causing flowers to sprout in that own head of his.
He stopped short of the garden gates calling out from over his shoulder, "well princess? Whatcha say we break yer outta this dump and have some fun."
From inside the castle, Kanetsugu watched as the princess rushed after the shadowy figure. "My lord, the hostage is escaping!"
"Just when I was starting to get bored, well-spotted Kanetsugu. Sasuke ready the horses, they shall pay in blood for stealing the princess," Kenshin's mismatching eyes cried in delight as he placed down his cup of sake and got to his feet.
Shooting Yukimura a nod the pair of bros followed suit and blocked the door, "I think it's bedtime for grumpy babies." Sasuke spoke stoically pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
"Sasuke, move, or I'll kill you." Kenshin grunted out, drawing his sword at lightning speed.
"My lord, it's past ten and the rabbits are waiting to be tucked in." Sasuke folded his arm like that of a strict parent.
Kenshin remained unmoving, "why must you spoil my fun," with swords crossed, staring the four eyed man down, Kenshin had every intention to hunt down his new target…. That is… until the newest addition of the rabbit army hopped up to the God of war's feet and wiggled his little nose, stomping its little feet impatiently as if to say 'we are waiting.'
"Tsk" he sheathed his sword back in place, scooping up the young bunny and stormed off to his chambers without another sound, leaving the princess to escape with her pirate prince in the dead of night.
