“I'm sorry,” Carla says, and her voice is loud, loud, too loud and clear and echoing and she feels like everyone on the entire planet is judging her in this moment and wishes she were dead, and the most of all, herself. “I hope you can forgive me.”

She knows he won't. She wouldn't have forgiven herself, that's for sure. Her lie is not one she can redeem in any way, ever.

She's not going to tell him that. That she really is sorry, because even though it's his fault, she is sorry because she wants to get rid of this, to get past this, for it to stop, for everything to stop because the guilt hurts. She looks at him, they lock eyes, his jaw is squared, and Carla realizes she doesn't hate him at all.

Only in time for him to hate her. It's ironic.

It's also inconvenient. All Carla can think when she walks through the aisle is that in reality, she could forgive Samuel for what he'd done to her, one day, eventually, but that doesn't really matter at all.

It's probably because she'd just hurt him back. It's the law of action and reaction. She's out of frustration, now all of it was transmitted to him. Maybe it’s more of the principle of energy conservation.

Carla blinks and one silent tear falls down her cheek. It doesn't matter. Stop it, stop it, stop it.

If she could go back in time to one omoment, she never would’ve stepped foot into that fucking bar with him.

“Don't you walk out of that door,” she hears behind herself, a poisoned voice of pure hatred that still gets its way out of its posessor's throat even though it will pollute everything around them with tar.

Carla turns around. Samuel stares at her, whole body clenched, jaw squared, eyes fiery. But the voice that comes out now is cold, calculated. “I meant it when I said I loved you. Now, I can't remember why.”

Maybe they'll go on like this forever. Blow for blow, kick for kick, tear for tear, maybe it won't stop until one of them falls down, blows up, burns out.

Carla turns around and leaves. Her heart already feels like it's been set aflame.
