Puzzles canonically did heart eyes at Mario in WOTFI 2024 and Mario technically called Puzzles mi amor so as far as I am concerned: canon. /j

As a MareWare ceo. What do you think of the people that call them a “problematic ship”?

I personally have no problem with the ship itself. I think it’s hilarious and offers a unique dynamic between the two. And I personally don’t care if people like the ship or not. But I feel like it’s a weird label to put on what is essentially just a hero x villain /crackship.

Ohh boy.

Okay so there’s a beeg misunderstanding around the Marware ship and a lot of people like to label it as victim x abuser bc Mr Puzzles indirectly tormented the SMG4 crew for a year.

Now, in my personal opinion, labelling all toxic ships as proships is a bit ridiculous bc with that logic, pretty much any ship could be argued to be a proship. I could argue that SMG34 is a proship because SMG3 harassed SMG4 for years and stole from him and tried to kill him. If we were in 2020 back at the peak of SMG3’s villainy during the YouTube arc, I can BET that there would be people calling SMG34 and Mar3 a proship bc Three essentially erased Four from existence and kept Mario as a prisoner until he was willing to cooperate. But of course, those ships are not proships, nor were they ever. But bc of that abuse rule, any idiot can make the argument that they are proships and a bunch of people waste a bunch of time talking about it.

But, if we are going to include the abuse rule, Marware still does not qualify to be a proship.

Why?

Because Mr Puzzles is incapable of actually hurting Mario.

We saw him try to intimidate and threaten him during Puzzlevision and Mario just kicked his ass every single time. Hell, Puzzles was cowering in FEAR of the man! And you want to tell me Marware is an abusive proship where Mario is the poor little victim? Oh please, he wouldn’t take that shit from Puzzles and you know it. It’s MARIO for Pete’s sake. If anyone’s the victim in this relationship it’s Puzzles /j

Also, although the crew were forced to perform in Puzzles’ shows against their will, Mario seemed to be actually ENJOYING Puzzles’ schemes which is ridiculous but true. The only time Mario really hated one of Puzzles’ schemes was when he stole his moustache and as soon as he confronted him, the first thing he did was smash his screen in as revenge.

If you want to write off the entirety of Puzzlevision as Mario being fully brainwashed (despite definitely not being brainwashed in the Gameshow Episode), then fine. We’ll just take a look at wotfi, the Puzzlevision movie, and the meme factory mini arc.

Wotfi 2024: Mario was the only one who wanted to stay in Puzzle Park when they first arrived, he was clearly having fun with a lot of the games (joking around with SMG4, smiling, clearly enjoying himself), in the wotfi song he literally said “I’m-a having fun! Let’s-a stay!” …..

Meme Factory Mini arc: Mario dropped in, danced around a bit, and got threatened by Puzzles. He didn’t even register the threat. He just stood there with a stupid look on his face. He couldn’t care less.

Puzzlevision movie: Mario gets threatened by Puzzles and immediately breaks his screen, demands TV time, and chases him around the entire mushroom kingdom trying to get his TV time back. He is completely unfazed by Puzzles yelling at him for ruining his 5 stars and instead continues to taunt him. When he gets told to ram his head into the wall 1000 times, he comes out completely uninjured afterwards bc Mario cannot get hurt like a normal person. SMG4 beheaded him in “No TV makes Mario not okie dokie” and he’s still doing fine. He clearly does not operate mentally and physically like a human.

It’s also worth noting that Mario is the ONLY character in the entirety of SMG4 who genuinely enjoys the creations that Puzzles is passionate about!! His shows, his theme park, whatever he does out of pure passion! Mario is there and in full support of it, no matter how terrible the parody may be.

If you want to bring up Western Spaghetti and IGBP then that’s fair. However, I don’t think Mario actually KNOWS Puzzles is responsible for those events. Think about it! Mario wasn’t there when Puzzles revealed he was behind those movies. And the crew themselves are seemingly over that whole thing as well. SMG4 is just irritated by Puzzles now. Meggy honestly seems to be the only one who is directly affected mentally by his schemes.

At the end of the day, you’ve got to remember that it’s a silly little meme show and a lot of what goes on really shouldn’t be taken that seriously. Especially with the character of Mario. But even if you want to take it seriously, you’ve got to look at the facts. Mario is too stupid to be mentally affected by what Puzzles does and physically, he is untouchable.

Marware is not a proship. It is not problematic. It’s is just hero x villain.

You don’t have to like it, but don’t go around calling the people who ship it proshippers

They met when he tried robbing her workplace during her shift and she kicked his ass. One of those “what a woman…” type of things. She encourages his villainy like it’s a hobby he has and he’ll probably do some grand romantic gestures for her or smth idk.

I love the idea of the Puzzlevision villains all hanging out AAAAAA

First of all, SMG4 would be completely off his rocker. He wouldn’t know what’s going on. A lot of shaking, nervous rambling, eyes darting around. You know those little dogs who constantly have some kind of medical thing/trauma? He’d be like that. Mr Puzzles would probably treat him like a pet and just check to make sure he was still alive with them all.

Puzzles would be the self proclaimed “leader” of their group and Wren would constantly be challenging him on this. There would be insane sexual tension between them though as Puzzles would belittle Wren for his temper and his height which would only piss the cowboy off more.

Wren would vent to Marty sometimes about how Puzzles pisses him off and Marty is just bored of hearing the same shit over and over again. In the early days, I think Wren would have tried messing with SMG4 a little but Four wouldn’t give a reaction as he was so wrapped up in his deteriorating mental state so Wren soon got bored and stopped doing it.

Marty is mostly the silent observer. He sometimes chimes in on a conversation but it’s rare. If Wren and Puzzles got into an argument Marty would usually be the one to keep an eye on SMG4. He would also be the one who cooks dinner for the group every night. He would feel pretty neutral towards all three of them, possibly liking Four a little more bc he’s less loud and annoying than the other two.

Wren and Puzzles almost definitely hooked up at least once but none of them talk about it.

Personally, I just see them as siblings bc as far as we know, there’s only one guardian pod between them but since that’s just my interpretation of their relationship, I can’t get upset at people who do ship them. If someone would rather compare their relationship to SMG34 or Nil0 (guardian x guardian) then they can. Just not my cup of tea.

I think they are a rarepair but only because they’re side characters we never see anymore. Pretty much any ship that doesn’t involve a main cast member is a rarepair atp.

Well, I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again bc this story and ship seriously need more attention.

I was browsing the SMG4 fandom tag on AO3 since there are so few new stories there that I can just see every single new story easily. Anyway, I noticed a fic for Wren x Niles and I thought “ooo new rarepair! I’ll read this.”, not expecting much from it.

But ho. ly. Shit.

IT WAS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER READ. POSSIBLY MY FAVOURITE SMG4 ONESHOT THAT EXISTS!

That one fanfictions opened me up to such an incredible dynamic between dead villains with stupidly similar stories. They are now my favourite rarepair and second favourite ship in all of SMG4. They work so well together and I love them.

The fic was called Reach for the sky by JCMorrigan and I cannot recommend it enough.

I mean I can definitely see Four being lovey dovey. Like he listens to those needy girlfriend asmrs and has been shown to like. Want romance in general more than Three has. But I can’t imagine him being like that with Three because like. 4 is very used to their current dynamic and they just enjoy messing with each other too much. If they started dating it would just be: new teasing method unlocked! And not much else would change.

I could see SMG4 being very touchy, though. Like with any SMG4 ship I imagine him just always like doing a lot of casual physical contact. A hand on his partner’s shoulder or like… he’s cheesy enough to link arms with someone I think. Frequent side-hugs. That kind of thing.

Yk yeah that seems about right.

Tbh though, I think Four would act differently around a girl compared to around a boy.

Just my opinion but I think Four is bi with a preference for women. So with a girl he’d probably be really into her. Clingy, affectionate, obsessed even. He would do anything for her to make her happy. Now that’s not saying he wouldn’t do that for a guy but I reckon he’d be a bit more reserved around a guy. Especially SMG3.

Tbh, a lot of this “would SMG34 be lovey dovey” debate comes from the fact that it is SMG3 were shipping Four with. If it was Four and Mario we were talking about then I could see them having a lot more PDA bc they’ve been so close for so long. But Three and Four will always have that slight competitive streak inside of them. Even if they did start dating, they’d still act like frenemies most of the time. It’s just how they are with each other.

We know that they love and care about each other in canon. Them dating wouldn’t change much about how they already act.

Just asking how do you feel about smg34?

Prepare for a long rant lol bc oh boy do I have opinions on this.

I like the ship, don’t get me wrong, but they’re just really god damn boring for me. Not quite as boring as Melony x Axol but still very vanilla.

It’s just a typical enemies to lovers trope which is so overdone now. They aren’t even enemies anymore. Just frenemies. Let’s face it, they’re never going to be canon. Their relationship will forever be teased but I will be VERY surprised if the SMG4 team actually follow through with them. The moments are nice but it’s just fan service.

2023 was an amazing year for SMG34 and it showed a real development in their relationship with IGBP and Wotfi 2023. But honestly, outside of a few teases, I really don’t think we’re going to be getting any concrete development for them for a while.

Without development, they really are just textbook enemies to lovers and that trope just doesn’t interest me on its own. Especially when they’re past the enemies phase but not quite lovers. It feels like they’re just eternally stuck in this weird grey area that only exists for the sake of fan service and I just couldnt care less about that kind of stuff.

Especially when SMG34 fans absolutely loose their shit about them standing next to each other when they’re the two characters who have had the most development out of everyone! Like bro. The SMG4 team are just fucking with you lot and you eat it up every time until it becomes the whole focus of the entire show!

Like, a side character could appear that we haven’t seen in a year and I just see countless people complaining that “ohhh SMG3 wasn’t in this episode!” Or “Ohh why didn’t SMG34 interact!” But if they DO interact then everyone just completely brushes aside the side character to just fawn over the thing that has more content than anything else!

Oh and god forbid you say you ship SMG4 or SMG3 with someone else. This is mostly directed at the TikTok SMG4 community but bloody hell it’s so annoying.

And don’t get me started on the Snowtrapped jokes.

The obsession some fans have with that episode just bc SMG3 and SMG4 had sex in it is honestly just irritating at this point. There are so many good episodes about their relationship! To show their development! One joke every so often is fine but for some people it’s every other word out of their mouths and I’m just sick of it.

What if Mar4 shippers just started going:

“Haha Wotfi 2014!” Over and over again. Or some of the other episodes where they are insanely homosexual with one another. Bc I’m telling you, way too many people brush over the Mar4 tension in the earlier episodes.

In conclusion, SMG34 is that ship you start to ship when you first join a fandom bc it’s cute, there lots of content for it, and it makes sense. A lot of people hold onto that first ship but for me, I end up finding dynamics that interest me a lot more. Now, I only really interact with SMG34 content if one of my friends has made it bc I just struggle to get excited about it now.

If ever there’s a moment in an episode that’s cute, instead of enjoying it, all I can think about is how a scene of SMG3 and SMG4 standing next to eachother is going to completely destroy any actual conversation about the episode.

I don’t hate the ship. I do like it. But it’s just so basic.

I’ll take a rarepair over SMG34 any day.
