Hiiiii anything about the Broken Roads series because I'm obsessed with that universe???
omg ♥ I’m so glad you like BR, that series is my baby (whom I have been severely neglecting, whoops).
The broken roads wips document is, like, super broad. It has literally every wip and also notes on plans for other installments, and for some reason I only move stuff into its own document when it’s ready for posting? I don’t know why I did that, but. Yeah. That is to say, there are a number of different wips I could tease here, including the next real installment and more of the current slow-post wip with Bruce and his kids, so I’m going to go take a quick peek in my tags to make sure I don’t do a re-posting.
OKAY. I cannot choose, so you get two smaller snippets. This one is from a work where Lian gets sick at school, and neither Roy or Dick (because Dick is Absolutely the local emergency contact on her file) can leave work to go get her.
“Does she, um, need to go to the hospital?” He asks, looking up at the nurse.
“I wouldn’t think so,” the woman responds, “She’s a bit warm, but the fever isn’t high enough to be concerned about. Just keep an eye on it, and if it hits a hundred and three, you should at least give the doctor a call.”
Jason nods along as she speaks and tries to let the reassurances that Lian’s okay, at least for the time being, comfort him.
“One-oh-three,” he confirms, “Got it. Thank you.”
The nurse gives him a suspiciously fond smile, and then says, “You’re not used to dealing with sick children, are you?”
Jason huffs out a laugh and rubs the back of his neck.
“That obvious?” He asks, and then adds, “Not really, though. My youngest brother is eighteen now, it’s been a while.”
And then, this is from Chapter 4 (Tim’s chapter) of he didn’t have to be, but it’s like... Okay, I literally just word-vomited one side of the dialogue for this scene when it came into my head, so it’s very, very rough, but. Yeah.
“Do you know what other eighteen year olds are doing, Tim? They’re going to undergraduate classes and college parties, they’re spending time with their friends, their partners, having fun… When was the last time you went on a date with Conner, Tim? Or hung out with Bart and Jaime?”
“Here’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to trade that coffee for a nice cup of chamomile tea, and then I’m going to call Leslie, who is going to fax us a doctor’s note so we can email your professor for an extension on your essay. Then, we’re going to determine which of your responsibilities at DI cannot wait until tomorrow, and I’m going to help you delegate them to the rest of your team. Then, you’re going to give me both of your cellphones, your tablet, and your laptop, and you’re going to get at least eight hours of sleep. When you wake up, you’re going to eat everything Alfred puts in front of you, and you’re going to spend the evening relaxing and go back to bed at a reasonable time. In the morning, I’m going to sit down and help you with a plan of attack for everything else that needs doing, which is going to include another hefty dose of delegation. We’re also going to revisit your course load and your plans for fast-tracking your masters. Is that understood?”
I meant to update this particular wip so much sooner, but Cass’ chapter is the next one, chronologically, and I’m struggle with writing it because I’m scared of fucking it up lol. (It’s about her frustration with trying to learn language, and I want to do it justice.)
