Bare-Knuckle Matches
Boxing has a long and storied history, rising and falling in popularity through the ages due to a variety of influences. The first recorded fight took place in London in 1681, a bare-knuckle match that is the forerunner of modern boxing. But early boxing did not have the same rules as today’s sport. It was extremely violent, allowing moves that included eye-gouges, head butts, choking and more; some boxers died as a result. It was in this atmosphere that Elizabeth Wilkinson Stokes and other women in the U.K. took up the sport.
Female Boxers Enter the Ring
Although Stokes probably had fights that went undocumented, the first appearance of her name in print came in 1722, when she beat Hannah Hyfield in a 22-minute match. In the fashion of the day, men and women boxers promoted themselves by boasting about their abilities while challenging other fighters. Stokes called herself the “European Championess” and fought at various venues. While challenges to fight were printed in newspapers throughout England, the bouts themselves were not covered. However, it appears Stokes remained undefeated throughout her career.
Women Boxers Fight in Pairs Matches
Boxing was a popular event in Great Britain, and although many did not favor the inclusion of women in the sport, others supported and even reveled in it. Elizabeth also fought in pairs matches with her husband, James Stokes. It was common during the early 18th century for female boxers to marry and fight alongside their husbands in couples’ events throughout the British Isles. Some of the contests during Elizabeth Stokes’ career include:
Stokes vs. Hanna Hyfield, 1722, in Hockley, England
Stokes vs. Mary Welch, 1726, at Stokes’ amphitheater in London
Elizabeth and James Stokes vs. Mary Welch of Ireland and future husband, Robert Baker, 1727, in London
Stokes vs. Ann Field, 1728, in Stoke Newington Parish, England
Elizabeth and James Stokes vs. Sarah and Thomas Barret of Ireland, 1728
Elizabeth and James Stokes vs. Mary Waller and Charles Wright, 1729
Weapons were also used in some of these early boxing matches before specific general rules were established. Although most of her bouts were boxing-only events, Stokes was also known for her skills in using a dagger and short sword.
The Entertainment Aspect
Boxing was banned in other European countries until the early 19th century. While it grew in popularity elsewhere during the 1800s, female boxers fell out of favor in England, perhaps due to an evangelical Christianity movement that sent the sport underground. Female martial artists became a form of entertainment and were seen mainly in night clubs and shows. Yet there had always been some sensationalism in promoting women boxers. An advertisement for one of Stokes’ 1726 bouts said the participants would fight in petticoats that fell just below the knee, drawers, stockings and pumps.
First World Championship Bout
Women’s boxing saw its first world championship bout in New York City in 1888, between Alice Leary and Hattie Leslie. The fight was ferocious, with both combatants receiving black eyes before Leslie won the match. The press belittled the women and the event. They caused such a commotion in the community that both women, plus Leslie’s husband and many others, were arrested and charged with “aiding and abetting a prizefight.” Yet female boxers continued to participate in the sport, and the 1904 Olympics, held in St. Louis, hosted an exhibition match.

Olympic champion Ruth Jebet among hundreds facing doping proceedings
• Steeplechaser among many athletes being investigated • Athletics Integrity Unit is pushing for greater transparency
The world steeplechase record holder and Olympic gold medallist, Ruth Jebet, is among more than 100 track and field athletes and coaches who are facing disciplinary proceedings for doping offences, the Athletics Integrity Unit has announced.
In March the Guardian exclusively revealed that the 21-year-old Jebet, who competes for Bahrain and who was hailed as “Golden Ruth” when she won the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at Rio, had tested positive for the blood booster EPO. However this is the first official confirmation that disciplinary proceedings are being pursued, which comes as part of a new drive by the AIU to introduce greater transparency in the sport.

Mirabai Chanu takes US route to prepare for Tokyo Olympics; SAI clears her training, rehabilitation programme | More sports News
NEW DELHI: World Cup gold medallist weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu, will train in Kansas City of the US to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai will soon be leaving for the US on a two-month long overseas training programme, along with her coach and physiotherapist. An amount of Rs 40 lakh has been sanctioned by the Sports Authority of India‘s (SAI) Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) for the purpose. Mirabai’s trip will be funded out of her Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) account. During her visit to the US, Mirabai will also undergo rehabilitation for her long-standing back injury which had forced her to miss the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.

Mirabai, a 2017 World Cup gold medallist who competes in the women’s 49kg category, will be eyeing to seal her Tokyo spot through the last Olympic qualification tournament in Nur-Sultan in April next year, where she has aimed to lift 210kg. Mirabai will be consulting sports physiotherapists and doctors in Kansas to recover from her back injury ahead of the Asian qualifier. During the MOC’s online meeting on Monday, financial proposals of over Rs. 1.5 crores of athletes in six sports shooting, badminton, boxing, para sports, weightlifting and hockey were taken up for discussion. “We are completely focussed on providing the best facilities to our Olympic-bound athletes. It was felt by the experts on the committee that Mirabai can get the best rehabilitation programme in the US along with training, and therefore her coach and physio are also accompanying her. I am sure this exposure will help her greatly in her Olympic preparation,” sports minister Kiren Rijiju later said. In shooting discipline, the MOC sanctioned the proposal of shooters to procure ammunition so that they can train at their own home ranges due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The committee also sanctioned the proposals of Anjum Moudgil and Mairaj Ahmad Khan for their equipment and training requirements. In boxing, the committee ratified the three month overseas training programme (effective from September 7) of Vikas Krishan along with his personal coach Ron Simms Jr. in the USA, while in badminton, the MOC sanctioned the participation of Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal and Lakshya Sen in the Danish Open Super 750 next month. Further, it also sanctioned Lakshya’s training in Denmark and participation in the SaarLorLux Open. In para-sport, the committee approved the coaching fees of Sharad Kumar’s coach Yevhen Nikitin till the Tokyo Paralympics for a period of one year. The MOC also sanctioned the proposal of the Indian men’s hockey team to appoint physiotherapist RB Kannan for an initial period of three months after the departure of the foreign physio.

Alternate Shannon Birchard makes surprise appearance in Jones' worlds win

Alternate Shannon Birchard makes surprise appearance in Jones' worlds win
Canada alternate Shannon Birchard was expecting to chat about the start of Saturday’s opening game when she joined her teammates at ice level for the fifth-end break.
Instead vice-skip Kaitlyn Lawes handed her a broom and asked if she wanted to make her world championship debut.
It was the latest unexpected development in a season Birchard will never forget.
Birchard, who helped the Jennifer Jones team win a national title last month, played the last two ends in a comfortable 11-5 win over Anna Kubeskova of the Czech Republic.
Jennifer Jones scores 4 in 4th end leading Canada to a 11-5 win over Czech Republic. 1:20
“To have me come in shows me that they trust me and I’m really excited that I got the opportunity,” Birchard said.
Lawes had to miss the Scotties Tournament of Hearts due to her Olympic mixed doubles obligations. Birchard served as a substitute on the Manitoba rink and played like a veteran as Jones won her sixth career national title.
“She’s super smart and has a ton of confidence,” Jones said. “Confidence isn’t something that you can just sign up for. You have to have it within and she’s got it.
“We’re really lucky to have her and she adds a lot of laughs as well, which is good.”
Birchard soaking it in
Birchard, 23, played skip for her own Winnipeg team this season. She also played with Jason Gunnlaugson at the mixed doubles trials.
She’s planning to join a new team next season with Kerri Einarson, Val Sweeting and Briane Meilleur. But for now, Birchard is soaking up the experience of playing at this level with some curling greats.
“She came in at the Scotties and took on the role, embraced the role, and was decisive and confident,” said Canada second Jill Officer. “I think that’s something that we really admire and respect. So that went really well with the things that we often think about.”
Birchard’s first throw at the North Bay Memorial Gardens did not go as planned as she nearly fell over during her delivery.
She was using Lawes’s broom — a different make than her normal one — and almost lost her balance.
“It kind of grabbed on the ice, the broom stops and I keep going forward. That’s a problem,” Birchard said with a laugh.
She still made the shot and came through with a nice runback in the seventh end.
“I’m totally fine — no injuries except to my ego a little bit,” Birchard added with a chuckle. “But it’s totally good.”
Jones in control from start
Jones, who won world gold in 2008, was in control from the start in front of a near-sellout crowd of 3,182.
She scored four in the opening end and stole a pair in the second. Kubeskova halved the lead with a takeout for three in the third end but was light on a freeze attempt in the fourth.
Jones made her pay with a hit to score four, putting the game out of reach.
“I thought we played pretty decent,” Officer said. “We made a lot of great shots and there was a couple shots that we’d probably like back. All in all, I think it was a pretty good start.”
In other early games, China’s Yilun Jiang drew to the four-foot ring for a 6-5 win over two-time world champion Binia Feltscher of Switzerland. Russia’s Victoria Moiseeva topped Scotland’s Hannah Fleming 8-4 and Olympic silver medallist Eunjung Kim of South Korea beat Germany’s Daniela Jentsch 8-3.
Jones, from Winnipeg, was scheduled to play Feltscher in the evening draw.
Canada is one of the headliners in a 13-team field that includes reigning Olympic champion Anna Hasselborg of Sweden.
Round-robin play continues through Friday and the medal games are set for March 25. The four-team Page playoff system has been scrapped this year in favour of a six-team straight-knockout format.
This is the sixth career world women’s curling championship appearance for Jones, who won bronze in 2010 and silver in 2015. She also won Olympic gold at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.
Ottawa’s Rachel Homan won world gold last year in Beijing. It was Canada’s 16th title at the event since the inaugural competition in 1979.
