Here are some historical figures and events related to Black Irish hairstyles & haircare:
Tumblr media
Notable Black Irish Figures & Hair History
1️⃣ Frederick Douglass & 19th-Century Ireland
When abolitionist Frederick Douglass visited Ireland in the 1840s, he was embraced as an intellectual and revolutionary. However, Victorian-era Ireland, like much of Europe, upheld Eurocentric beauty standards, meaning Black hair was often exoticized or misunderstood. Portraits of Douglass from his time in Ireland show him proudly wearing his natural afro-textured hair, a radical statement of identity.
2️⃣ Emma Dabiri & the Modern Natural Hair Movement
Irish-Nigerian writer Emma Dabiri has been a leading voice on Black hair politics. Her book Don’t Touch My Hair (2019) explores how Black hair is deeply tied to history, power, and resistance—including in Ireland, where she grew up experiencing discrimination for wearing her natural hair. She continues to advocate for ending hair discrimination in Irish schools and workplaces.
3️⃣ The 2020 Afro-Irish Hair Discrimination Debate
In recent years, Black Irish students have faced school policies that unfairly regulate afro-textured hair. In 2020, student Mide Oshin from Dublin campaigned against discriminatory rules that targeted protective styles like braids and locs, leading to national conversations about race and hair bias in Ireland.
4️⃣ Felicia Olusanya (FeliSpeaks) – Embracing Afro-Irish Identity
Spoken-word artist and activist Felicia Olusanya (FeliSpeaks) has used poetry and public speaking to highlight the beauty of Afro-Irish identity, including natural hair. As a cultural ambassador, she encourages younger generations to embrace their curls and coils.
5️⃣ Black-Owned Haircare Businesses in Ireland
As the Afro-Irish community has grown, so has the demand for hair products suited to Black hair. Entrepreneurs like Joyce Ozioma Osi (founder of Joyful Hair & Beauty) and Tolu Orekoya (who launched Ireland’s first Black hair salon directory) are helping provide resources for Black Irish people to access the haircare they need.
Hair as a Symbol of Black & Irish Resistance
Both Black and Irish people have historically faced oppression, and hair has often played a role in resistance. In the 18th century, Irish women would braid secret messages into their hair during British rule—just as enslaved Africans in the Americas used cornrows to map out escape routes. Today, Black Irish people continue to reclaim their natural hair as a powerful symbol of pride and heritage.
