WELL GUYS...

I realize its been a while since the last chapter came out and BELIEVE me I feel bad about it. It's been a REALLY STRESSFUL month and I apologize. I have been writing it slowly but it's nowhere near done :(. I haven't been able to really get in the writing mood lately, mostly because I haven't been able to think! Between work, my home life (which includes my apartment complex being on fire, my rent getting raised, and family drama) and adopting a newborn kitty I've been so drained. So please bare with me in the meantime and thank you for even reading my drabbles.

I promise I plan on finishing this fic and the only thing that will stop me is death... And even then I should make sure someone has access to my notes so it can still be completed lol.

List of “primary source” books about or including MvR

-Der rote Kampfflieger (1917): This is his “autobiography”. Im putting autobiography in quotation marks because he didn’t really write it. I don’t know how many people know about this, but he basically only gave bullet points and then someone else wrote the book. The editor was also allowed to change things without consulting MvR first. I would take literal quotations from that book with a tiny grain of salt.

-Ein Heldenleben (1920): I would consider this as one of the more reliable sources. Sadly the book is super rare and no english translation exists. It includes the original autobiography, a bunch of letters he wrote to his mother, a chapter where Lothar writes about his experiences with Manfred and in the war, a bunch of german, english and french obituaries, and a whole bunch of accounts by multiple people who knew/met MvR.

-Der Wall von Eisen und Feuer 3: Die letzten beiden Jahre (1920): Includes a chapter about early JaSta 11 in early 1917

-In der Luft unbesiegt (1923): This is a book that has several articles written by former pilots. It includes one article by Olt. Lampel who met MvR in 1918.

-Briefe eines deutschen Kampffliegers an ein junges Mädchen (1930): This book is the published letters of Erwin Böhme to his girlfriend. MvR is mentioned multiple times in there, as him and Böhme were friends, but otherwise the book gives good insight on the general life as a fighter pilot in ww1.

-Der rote Kampfflieger (1933): This is essentially the remastered version of DRK17 and Heldenleben. It also includes two more letters and a chapter by Bolko, Manfreds youngest brother. Definitely worth a read too, however they cut some chapters from the original Autobiography and from Lothars chapters.

-Mein Fliegerleben (1935): Ernst Udets Autobiography. Includes a chapter of Udets time in the JG1.

-Mein Kriegstagebuch (1936): This is the book written by Kunigunde von Richthofen, MvRs mother. It gives a good insight on MvR’s character, however Kunigunde is very biased. Of course, as a mother, she portrays him in the best light possible, and also theres some stuff in the book that is straight up made up. This might be due to censorship by the Nazis. However its still worth a read.

-Jagd in Flanderns Himmel (1935): Also known as the Bodenschatz Diaries, this book is a war diary of the Jagdgeschwader 1, written by MvR’s adjutant, Karl Bodenschatz. Also there is a lot of Nazi propaganda in there, but I think thats on me because my version is from 1941

Personally, I think the more reliable sources are the books published from 1919-1932, as those were not censored by any government. With MvR you really have to look at the time when the account was taken, because he really had a shift in character from 1917 to 1918.

I might update the list over time.

The last OLT update was 20/10, right? Because AO3 is telling me it was 13/10. Some other fics on my bookmarks also have their update dates wrong (and I know that because I have an email with the dates I know are the right ones) but the thing is: it’s random. Some have wrong dates and some have right dates, some have the second to last update date and some have random dates. Is the simulation glitching? Or is it just an ao3 bug and it’s showing 13/10 to you too?

Ah ha! Thanks for letting me know. I can actually explain this one for mine.

So when I pre-loaded the chapters into AO3 to make it easier for me to click publish, it locks in the date I added the draft as the "publish" date. Theoretically, I should be changing the date before I hit publish, but the last time I remembered was October 13. So when I publish a new chapter, it keeps the original "publish" date.

Probably, the fics that you're seeing have the "wrong" date were either saved as a draft in AO3 before they were posted, or submitted to a fest that released them at a later date, or the writer changed the date to a later date.

OLT(NE) is updated to have Oct 20 as the date, and HOPEFULLY, I'll remember to change the date on Monday.

I am sooo sorry for not updating OLT in a very long time. I'll probably go through the whole story and make a few changes whenever I get the time. For now, I've started on another story which is going to be Elriel and Feysand with a side of Nessian.

Here's a small snippet from the story. It's an Only Murders in the Building AU.

Police sirens and loud footsteps were echoing throughout the building. All the residents were once again subjected to the sight of the police, this time ordering them to remain inside their flats. On the other side of the building were two middle aged men running down the stairs.

“Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. We’re gonna die!” Cassian screamed. Rhysand rolled his eyes and instead of going down the other flight of stairs, he took a turn on the 12th floor. “Where are you going?” Cassian asked as he followed Rhysand rushing through the hallway.

“We have to go get her!” Rhysand said as they finally approached a door left ajar. Walking inside they found one Elain Archeron covered in blood sitting in front of a body wearing a black hoodie with a white smoke design with a pair of shears sticking out of it.

Elain looked up at them with a wide eyed gaze. “It’s not what you think.”

Yesterday began in Redding, California, at the Quality Inn Hotel which, incidentally, when we rolled in the previous night we actually had a hard time finding the front office. I actually drove right past it at the front of the property and then spent a bit of time fruitlessly driving around the back looking for it.

Okay not my best moment.

Yeah.

The following morning, yesterday morning, now we've gotta boogie the rest of the way up California into Oregon to Medford. Gotta be there by noon. Definitely gotta return the car between 1 and 130. So we check out and leave by nine on a drive that'll take two-and-a-half-hours.

By the way, something we learned about our rental car while we were gassing up for the day: the car knows the pressure of each tire and displays a handy graphic on the dashboard monitor to that effect. In fact, the graphic updates as you fill up low pressure tires.

So yeah.

This is now a feature I really, really, really want in all our future cars.

Now we're on the road again and, at some point along the way we pull off at the Weed Rest Area along I-5 because you know... it's the Weed Rest Area. Where you also get a front row view of Mount Shasta for good measure. ;-)

Back on the road again, we roll into Medford around quarter to noon with the following agenda: put together a gift basket for the good people at Oregon Light Truck & RV and... we've gotta find a car wash.

We hit the GoodWill South Medford first where we score a wicker gift basket (sans treats). Then we continue up the road to the Oil Stop Drive-Thru Oil Change + Car Wash where they take thorough care whilst making our rental look all shiny and new again which is completely unnecessary because the rental company does that immediately upon return of every vehicle anyway.

We just don't want them thinking we trashed their car...

I'm guessing.

Up the road farther is a Fred Meyer where we hope to score gift basket treats. As soon as we pull into the parking lot, we immediately realize it's our old Fred Meyer where we broke down in the first place.

Small world, you know?

Very small, it turns out. We're in there just a few minutes when Kimmer realizes we're running out of time... so we turn around, hoof it back to the car, and complete our return to Oregon Light Truck & RV.

12:40, by the way's when we pull up out front. Perfectly on time. :-)

The drill now is to pay for the RV repairs they completed before we even left Medford a week ago, then unload absolutely everything from our rental, and wipe down the rental's interior which Kimmer accomplishes quickly before sending me off to return the now empty (and completely cleaned) rental car.

Again. We don’t want them to think we trashed their car.

Apparently.

By the time I pull into the Enterprise Rent-A-Car parking lot, it's 1:15. The perfect conclusion to a pretty decent plan we laid out a few days before.

After a quick check-back-in with the super helpful people at Enterprise, I'm standing out front of the building summoning an Uber that shows up a few minutes later. It's a great ride with Marcella whose husband is also a driver and whose car we actually spot at an intersection not five minutes into the ride.

Marcella drops me off at Oregon Light Truck & RV around 2 o'clock where Kimmer's pretty deep into the process of repopulating the inside of the Rialta with all our belongings. She's already impressed the heck out of Katie from OLT&RV. She couldn’t believe how much Kimmer'd manage to Tetris into the rental car. Basically everything that was in the Rialta.

My girl's got serious game. :-)

The clock's rounding three by the time we pull away from OLT&RV. Our plan now is to return to the Fred Meyer we briefly visited earlier and find some tasty treats with which to fill the wicker gift basket we purchased from GoodWill also earlier today.

Out of habit (and an abundance of knowledge) Kimmer finds some very lovely and healthy treats... but abandons that effort in favor of cupcakes and cherry strudels. We also manage to find a Thank You card that reads

"What's bigger:  A gagillion? A bazillion? A quadrillion? Whatever it is I'm thankful that many times plus one."

Upon our return to OLT&RV, Kimmer tells Katie that she was gonna get them something that was healthy and good for them... but chose instead something they'd actually, you know, like.

Given Katie's response to the gift basket, it's pretty likely her crew only ever saw the cupcakes.

Katie's a huuuuge strudel fan, you see. ;-)

Next on our agenda out of town but before we actually leave town... is the Medford GoodWill North. There's a miniature golf course on the other side of I-5 from that GoodWill and we really did have it mind to take a little time miniature golfing.

After a touch of shopping, though, then over a late lunch of salads we picked up at the San Jose Trader Joe's a coupla days before, it's obvious we need to make some actual, you know, progress. So we hatch a plan to indulge a miniature golf road trip in the future and finally, finally, finally...

Bid farewell to Medford.

Whew.

Six oh six, by the way, is when we hit the road again.

Now our plan isn't to hightail it back to Seattle. In fact, we've gotta swing by the Quality Inn & Suites in Tualatin where we left one of the cushions from the Rialta when we stayed there on our southbound leg.

They're holding it for us at the front desk. :-)

So.

We don't have to make that much progress... and decide to stop in at one of our favorite stops: Roseburg, Oregon, where it's now 745 and the sun's pretty invested in setting.

We indulge a little shopping at the Dollar Tree here before traveling another sixty miles and a pair of rest stops.

We pull off I-5 at the second rest stop, settling in for the night with a round of Hot In Cleveland streaming through Franklin, our mobile hot spot, before a lovely night's sleep in the Riata's double bed set up in back.

Unfortunately for us (and the Rialta), what we don't realize is that someone will or already has... stolen a part right off the outside of our ride. :-(

Hey are you still updating Other Lost Things? I really love the story so far but it hasn’t updated in a bit (it’s felt like years) and I’m wondering if the Tuesday update plan has been changed and I didn’t notice.

i'm SO sorry, you're right, it's been just over four weeks, which means we're due to be on chapter 7 right now....ack

i've just been in a depression funk (i think i've said two or three times that it's Definitely Fine Now Guys, Don't Worry, and that keeps being a lie, oops) and going through the process to post olt is...not streamlined, shall we say? so i was avoiding it. which i KNEW would happen if i skipped a week, but here we are.

also, while the story is done, i was doing final edits about two weeks in advance, which means that i am now two weeks behind on final edits. which is also why i've been avoiding things. but i'm working on 6 & 7 right now because why not, and in the meantime i posted two chapters for ya :3. we meet our last main character in them! fun times

now, it is 1am, but don't worry, i have nothing better to do with my time and i'm totally nocturnal anyway. i do not remember the state of chapters 6 & 7 (except i KNOW there's a bit in chapter 6 that i keep taking out and putting back in even tho my editor wants me to keep it...ugh i have to decide on that now don't i) BUT if i can get them done tonight i will post them as well in the next few hours. and then hopefully be back on normal schedule 🙏

so for real thank you for this ask friend bc i have been thinking more and more that i definitely needed to do this, but i dunno how long it would've taken me to actually get there on my own <3

I'm getting so sick of the grip you and your stories have on me. Every chapter OLT makes me feel an irrational amount of rage towards Peter but I can't not read every update as soon as I get the notification. And the way I have to actually put my phone down and walk away because I'm just in shock??? Unbelievable.

I'm literally in my room talking and yelling to myself because this shit is like a whole new level of like--I can't even say it. It always takes me a good hour or two to actually process what I read and come up with more rational thoughts about it, but right now I'm just speechless and in awe at what you're capable of making me feel.

Lol was trying to find more info on when the hell the next OLT update is coming (radio silence from RedBarrels...) and instead found a Reddit thread of people bitching the game is dead.

A game with an active playerbase isn't dead. I see a group of players in the lobby every single time I go on. But it's early access, what do you expect? We haven't gotten anything new since it came out. I have a ridiculous amount of hours in the game bc I just keep releasing reagents to pass time, but most normal people don't milk games dry, and move on til new content comes out. Which we haven't gotten... Annnnny day now... A game is not dead just bc the playerbase dwindled naturally due to lack of content. What's more annoying is people who call OW2 dead. Um... there are currently 817,727 players online right now at 4pm on a weekday during the school year. Queueing takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes avg. That ain't dead.
