Pitch for a Dark Pictures Anthology game:
1) The title
FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
2) The prologue
In 16th Century Florida, Spanish missionary Juan Garcia (false protagonist 1) joins a group led by real life conquistador Juan Ponce de León. The group - guided by indigenous tracker Micco (false protagonist 2) - are on the hunt for the mysterious Fountain of Youth, a location where the water supposedly restores a person’s youth. De Leon believes that his predecessor found the Fountain before they went missing.
The group does eventually find the Fountain, but De Leon is forced to return to his base after receiving an urgent message. To ensure that no one else can claim the Fountain, De Leon orders a few members of the group to stay behind.
The following night, the group is attacked by a mysterious faction. Only Juan Garcia and Micco survive the initial attack. However, their survival is short-lived when the two end up back at the Fountain…and find themselves surrounded by a group of hooded cultists. They try to fight back, but are eventually killed.
The cultists then gather all the corpses and begin to drain their blood in the Fountain…

3) The main story (and the main protagonists)
In present day Florida, the area where the Fountain of Youth was found is now the location of the Romero-Argento Correctional Institution. It is one of Florida’s most notorious prisons as it houses the worst of the worst. We follow 4 death row inmates:
* Jackson Te Wiata (AGGRESSIVE, INSECURE): A Māori-American former MMA fighter who was sentenced to death for killing his cheating wife and the guy she was sleeping with. Despite his tough, aggressive, “manly” front, Jackson is deeply insecure and fragile. Jackson is also the most fearful of his pending execution, having not accepted the consequences of his actions.
* Javier Ortega (REMORSEFUL, COMPLEX): A high-ranking member of a Mexican gang who was sentenced to death for killing five rival gang members, as well as two innocent people who were caught in the crossfire. During his time in prison, Javier has changed his ways and now spends his time writing books about the dangers of gang life.
* Kasim Greene (FOOLHARDY, HUMOROUS): An African-American former security guard who was sentenced to death for killing his heroin dealer, unaware that he was actually an undercover cop. Kasim is the most light-hearted member of the group, having already accepted his pending execution and wanting to enjoy his last years.
* Spencer Ward (INTOLERANT, COMMANDING): A white supremacist/Neo-Nazi leader who was sentenced to death for numerous offenses, namely murder, rape, and various hate crimes. He’s the least repentant of the 4 death row inmates, believing that he was justified in what he did. That being said, he’s willing to work with the others out of self-preservation.
In addition to the 4 inmates, we also follow 1 correctional officer:
* Jesse Cruz (ANXIOUS, UNDERSTANDING): A rookie correctional officer who recently transferred to Romero-Argento. Jesse is the least cynical of her coworkers, believing that all people are worthy of redemption. She also strongly opposes the death penalty. Because of this, her coworkers believe she’s too “soft” for this line of work.
The story is that, on the eve of the execution of a prisoner named Tre Phillips, the protagonists start hearing rumors of strange activities happening after an execution is carried out. Rumors of the bodies of the deceased being taken to the basement of the prison. It’s also noted that the basement is restricted to both the inmates and the correctional officers.
The chaos officially begins when a massive prison riot breaks out, sending the prison into lockdown. Most of Act I is centered on the 5 protagonists trying to survive the riot as the prisoners take over the prison. Because the riot occurred, the real villains are forced to take drastic action, leading into Act II and Act III.
The big reveal is that the basement is where the Fountain of Youth is being maintained. In order to use the Fountain’s regenerative capabilities, the users must fill the fountain with human blood and bathe in it. The villains are actually the Spanish search party that had initially found the Fountain (the ones before Ponce de Leon). Thanks to centuries of human sacrifices, the villains are still alive in the present day.
When the prison was built over the Fountain, the villains came up with the idea of using the death row inmates as their human sacrifices. No one would suspect a thing, especially since they were already condemned by the state. However, their latest ritual was ruined thanks to the prison riot. So now, they’ve revealed themselves in order to complete the blood ritual.
As the protagonists, it’ll be up to the players to determine whether or not they escape the prison…or end up being the latest victims of the Fountain. (Side note: Players can also determine whether the prisoner protagonists can become fugitives or be re-incarcerated).
4) Casting / Face models of the protagonists
* Jackson Te Wiata: Played by the celebrity guest star, Cliff Curtis
* Javier Ortega: Same face model as Merwin from House of Ashes
* Kasim Greene: Same face model as Olson from Man of Medan
* Spencer Ward: Same face model as Jeff Whitman from The Devil in Me
* Jesse Cruz: New face model, couldn’t think of anyone (maybe Erin Keenan from The Devil in Me? I’m only hesitant since TDIM just came out)
* Juan Garcia: Same face model as Salim Othman from House of Ashes
* Micco: New face model, couldn’t think of anyone

Mum & MoM
just finished playing Man of Medan with my mum, it is the first movie game/SMG title she's ever played and I am glad to report that she really enjoyed it
We saved all six, got the distributor cap and Olson died of a heartattack, she says she likes how all the characters have their own thing going on and it kept her on edge. She doesn't have a specific character ranking(Alex is at the bottom tho she is of course glad he survived) although over the three sittings we played it Conrad grew on her first after initially thinking he was a little annoying, the second time she was endeared to Brad and Fliss and this time it was Julia+ she likes junior/Danny/Olson
She really appreciated that the player characters are empathetic enough to save junior and I'm glad we managed that in her blind playthrough
Some funny things were:
*coffin shown on screen before literally anything else* mum immediately: do we know who's in the box?
"really? Over 50 cents!?"
*corpse falls out of cupboard* mum: womp womp
Mum: what an ugly child
Me: that's Joe's son
*mum shoots at zombie child and then freaks out that it didn't work*
*me explaining Conrad and Julia as they get on the Duke as mum was playing them*: Conrad has big clown energy and Julia is mega adhd
Mum: ah yes perfect for me ✨
"everyone on this boat has attention deficit issues"
*the utter disbelief when I tell her how long Alex and Julia have been together*
And much more
She's very much looking forward to starting little hope next

Danny x Olson
1. They ARE an old married couple and Junior IS their son. It's adorable please.
Ashley Brown x Chris Hartley x Josh Washington
1. personally?? personally. they just Are the best ship the seance scene single handedly conveys such an interesting and complex dynamic between the 3 of them in little under 10 minutes, tbh Every interaction they all have before shit goes down paints a picture of chemistry and friendship that could Very Easily transition into romantic it feels wrong to seperate the 3 of them into pairings... feels Unnatural

Idk if you already did but this is your invitation to rant about how We Don't Talk About Bruno fits Dark Pictures characters (if you want)
SCREAMING AAAA
OKAY OKAY a bunch of different Dpa characters talking to the player about the curator. That’s it. Well, that’s what it should’ve been but then I got excited and assigned roles.
More detail is under the cut<3
* Mirabel: Player(you, good sir)
* Pepa and Félix: Julia and Alex
* Dolores: Nick <33
* Camilo: Jamie
* Isabella: Salim
* Abuela: Still not super sure but I was thinking an old guy like Charlie lmao
* Moriano: Jason ehe
* Bruno: Curator
Also the other lil freaks-
* Dead fish girl: Anthony(but it’s his family not a fish😭)
* Gut guy??: Olson
* Baldy lol: Du’Met
And extra info on why I chose each character if you want it:
Julia and Alex: Should be decently self explanatory; he can propose to her in game so like wedding time<3
Nick: “I associate him with the sound of falling sand”, if y’know, y’know. And Dolores’s part after Isabella’s, like he could be talking about Jason, sure(please), or Rachel/Eric. Idkkk
Jamie: I was kinda stuck on this one for a while, but first of all, I lacked tdim characters in this and second, she jokes about her trauma and stuff.
Salim: OKAY HOLD ON listen to the punk version by Matt Copley bc Isabella’s part sound VERY pretty and that’s like the main reason I chose him. He’s pretty.
Jason: Jalim? And possible Kaychek?? Yeah I’m in
Charlie(?? Maybe): Old person(that’s canonically real ackackack)
Thanks for listening to my rant. Sorry my brain is constantly smoking crack(it’s lack of sleep not drugs dw)

Betrayal Beneath the Waves
Fandom: Dark Pictures: Man of Medan Rating: Teen Characters: Alex Smith, Brad Smith, Julia, Conrad, Fliss DuBois, Olson, Junior, Danny Tags: Canon-Divergent AU Complete (Chapters 1/1)
The bad news: Alex was right about someone selling out him and his friends. The good news: It wasn't Fliss. The worse news: It was someone he didn't expect.
Brad ended up being right about where the sunken plane was, though it was still only a hunch at the beginning of the diving trip. All he had to do was keep on pretending he was a big, nerdy wuss, and then use the fact that he was a total lightweight when drinking to get out of the way when the fishermen, who he hired while on the way from getting the alcohol, showed up on the Duke of Milan. But he wasn't expecting Conrad to piss off said fishermen when they showed up to scout the Duke of Milan. Or for them to take things over that violently (especially after finding the note Julia and Alex found about the coordinates to the location of the Ourang Medan). Or for the Manchurian Gold to be, well, THAT.

Why Man of Medan is the best DPA game
Yes let's do this :)
Most variability & replayability. My choices in this game give me so many more different scenes & dialogue than my choices in the other games. Plus you can play certain scenes as different characters depending on who's dead or alive, which adds even more variability even when it's the same scene. I have played this game SO many times and I STILL manage to find something new almost every playthrough.
No character has plot armor until a certain point in the game, they all have the ability to die prior to the last few chapters depending on your choices! (also depending on whether you're playing theatrical cut or curator's cut, as I'm pretty sure that determines whether Alex or Julia can die during the Olson chase in "Revenge")
Relationship stats actually have an effect on what dialogue or scenes you may get. In my asshole playthrough, when Conrad & Fliss had an empty relationship stat, there was an entire new scene between them after Fliss stopped him from jumping at the end of the Glamor Girl chase. It was a little sad for me as a Confliss shipper but also funny as hell and I was so excited about a whole new added scene.
Speaking of, the Glamor Girl chase scene. That's all I need to say. Iconic.
Fliss😍
It may be subtle, but each of the main characters go through their own character development! Even Alex! I might make a separate post sometime about each of the main 5's developments bc it is pretty subtle but still very much there❤️
Have I mentioned the variation and branching and replayability? Because MoM's absolutely TOPS❤️

Alex - Water deer
Julia - Otter
Conrad - Otter
Fliss - Cormorant
Brad - Water deer
Olson - Sea lion
Junior - Sea lion

MoM: Darkness, antagonists analysis
so random thoughts about our three human antagonists and why I was recently thinking that there did need to be specifically three of them. As we know the people that made MG are far removed from the circumstances that our characters find themselves in, the chemical itself has no will and the human antagonists are also victims in this scenario so why not look at them the way we look at our playable characters?
(long ass ramble below)
As we know the things our characters see are influenced by their fears and anxieties and are generally representative of their deeper psychology, while we don't see these things for the fishermen we do see their before and after. 2/3 weren't that bad and were obviously roped into the original crime and the third is the least bad of the anthology's antagonists. My thoughts are of the individual reactions to the darkness, to lose their sense, to concede to it or be consumed by or overcome it.
...Hopefully this will make a level of sense.
Starting with Danny, in the early part of the game he is shown as a voice of reason, consistently advising Olsen towards less drastic action and being all around level headed, even when things get worse he attempts to look out for the player characters on multiple occasions but the situation repeatedly presses against his very reasonable actions until in the end he can no longer trust his own judgement and is seen attacking the soldiers who could have rescued him. In the darkness he loses his discernment, in a way his arc is the inverse of a character like John which is usually pegged as the "learning to lead" arc where as Danny goes from a level-headed advisor to a reactive survivor. This is why I think he always survives but never dies, he shows a possible fate of our characters if they lose their rationality.
Olsen is an interesting case because he's in the exact mid point of horrifying in real life but really just a guy compared to the other villains, his early game motivation is literally just trying to make ends meet, obviously his decision to do that by taking tourists hostage is both reprehensible and recklessly shortsighted in terms of it actually working out for him and worse is that he drags everyone else into his scheme. His motivation seems more like pure greed towards the end and his paranoia grows but I think it's interesting to note that everything he does is motivated by survival at all costs. A thing I've never seen brought up(probably because it's far more complex than most of us are equipped for) is how Olsen and Fliss share a lot of the same views and life circumstance, both talking about doing what they must to get by, even outside the bounds of the law, both holding disdain for Americans and generally foreign influences and are superstitious, with Fliss she carries these pressures alone but learns to both rely on and be relied on throughout the game, the burden of survival is then shared but Olsen despite having more people than her to begin with views it as his burden and is crushed under it(sometimes quite literally), taking those he cares for with him, the player is on more than one occasion challenged with prioritising another characters wellbeing over there own or not and survival depends on teamwork which is something that Olsen fails at as he concedes to darkness and dies alone in his pursuit of survival at all costs. Across all playthroughs.
Finally junior is unique as our one meaningfully determinant NPC, especially because you have to go out of your way to save him. In the early game it is easy to see that he is just misguided or more so misled by his brother, the player can build a rapport with him over the game, he's never shown as level headed as Danny but he more easily sympathises with the player and in turn becoming sympathetic himself. During the later part of the game he is lost in the darkness having lost the guiding force of his brother and the balancing influence of Danny so when you get to him at that critical point you are trying to guide him out of the darkness, failing which he and potentially another are consumed in that darkness, if you save him you are literally helping him to see the world around him more clearly and in turn he guides the player to Olsen, in this way his arc is a coming of age arc where he learns to make decisions for himself and grows to be proactive in his ability to help others, much like a character like Mark or conversely if you do not save him he never gains a sense of self or sees the world clearly, comparative to Andrew's worst ending. Ultimately if he survives he under goes a sort of redemption/self-actualization arc and I think that you don't really 'win' MoM without his survival.
So yeah that ended up being longer than expected but tl;dr I think the fates of Danny/Olsen/Junior matter more than it originally appears and their respective arcs and characteristics are more deep than they get credit for
@kassiekole22 @delurkr @ctrvpani @tinynightmarewoman
@eframschweigersskincells @aydeenchan @conra @qusok what do y'all think of my semi stream of consciousness analysis? 😂

Games which Piqued my Interest List (1 of ?)
1. Dark Pictures Anthology Collection
Plot Summaries: (SPOILERS ALERT IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED THE GAMES)
- The Man of Medan:
Man of Medan is presented as an unfinished story in the possession of the omnipresent Curator (Pip Torrens), who requests the player's assistance in completing it.
A prologue, set after World War II, details an American warship in Manchuria being overrun by ghostly apparitions, causing the death of the crew.
In the present day, brothers Alex (Kareem Alleyne) and Brad (Chris Sandiford) are preparing for a diving expedition into the South Pacific Ocean alongside Alex's girlfriend, Julia (Arielle Palik), Julia's brother, Conrad (Shawn Ashmore), and the ship's skipper, Fliss (Ayisha Issa). Alex and Julia seek out to find a World War II wreck plane rumoured to have crashed. Meanwhile, a group of fishermen crash into Fliss' boat, the Duke of Milan. After the expedition group celebrate, the fishermen, led by Olson (Kwasi Songui), ambush the boat and take the protagonists hostage; Brad may optionally remain in hiding. Conrad attempts to steal the fishermen's speedboat, which he can either successfully do so and flee, remain captured, or be killed in the attempt. Olson discovers the coordinates of a seemingly hidden treasure named Manchurian Gold and seeks out to find it with the Duke crew in his captivity.
The Duke crashes into the SS Ourang Medan, the freighter featured in the prologue, which the fishermen board, taking the Duke of Milan's distributor cap to prevent the crew from fleeing. The protagonists immediately plan to regain the distributor cap and escape. The group is split after Fliss is recaptured and Brad is either too captured or leaves the Duke and re-joins her, while the others secretly follow. Both groups begin to witness unknown threats, optionally resulting in deaths: Fliss searches the ship's lower deck, potentially alongside Brad, and locates the Manchurian Gold, a leaking chemical substance; Conrad, if he remained captured, pursues Fliss and is pursued in turn by a female nurse; and Alex and Julia are attacked by Olson and a hallucinogenic version of Alex.
The surviving protagonists regroup and head towards the radio room to request extraction. They contact the military, optionally revealing their co-ordinates and the ship name. The group then again splits, with one team heading further into the generator room and the other remaining with the radio. The team heading to the engine room successfully reactivate the power and surmise that Manchurian Gold was actually a hallucinogenic bioweapon developed during World War II to induce hallucinations on victims.
As Olson pursues, one of the protagonists at the radio decides to investigate after hearing a gunshot. If Alex stayed behind, he goes down with whomever is with him and finds Olson dead before being attacked by rats and optionally destroying the distributor cap and/or dying. If Alex did not stay in the radio room, only one protagonist will investigate. This protagonist is forced into a fight with Olson, with the distributor cap either being recovered or destroyed in the onslaught. If at least one of the generator protagonists survived, they emerge and send a cargo door crashing down on Olson to kill him, with the other protagonist either escaping or being crushed also. Otherwise, Olson kills the radio protagonist before succumbing to a heart attack.
The surviving group members reunite on the outer deck of the ship, with the overall outcome depending on the fate of the group via player choice, whether the Duke of Milan's distributor cap was saved or destroyed, and whether the military was called for assistance alongside whether the ship name was disclosed.
- Little Hope:
Little Hope is presented as an unfinished story in the possession of the omnipresent Curator (Pip Torrens), who requests the player's assistance in completing it.
In the present day, a bus driver is taking four students, Andrew (Will Poulter), Angela (Ellen David), Taylor (Caitlyn Sponheimer), and Daniel (Kyle Bailey), and their professor, John (Alex Ivanovici), on a class trip, before crashing after being forced to take a detour through the ghost town of Little Hope. The story then jumps back to a prologue set in 1972 regarding the Clark family: the parents, Anne (David) and James (Ivanovici), and their four adopted children, Anthony (Poulter), Tanya (Sponheimer), Dennis (Bailey), and Megan (Skye Burkett). Megan places her doll onto a stove lit by Anthony, starting a house fire where each of the family members die except for Anthony, who runs back into the burning house as the prologue ends.
Back in the present, the group set off into Little Hope to search for help as the bus driver goes missing. They enter a bar to use a phone and encounter Vince (Kevin Hanchard), Tanya's boyfriend at the time of the house fire, who reveals that there is no power. On the way up the road, Andrew and Angela find a doll and are dragged backwards in time by a ghostly figure named Mary (Burkett). The group all begin to collide with Mary and see flashbacks where Reverend Carver (David Smith) is blackmailing Mary into helping him frame residents of Little Hope (doppelgängers of the present-day group) for witchcraft. Each member of the group except for Andrew witnesses their doppelgänger be executed before being attacked by a demonic version of them and either successfully fleeing or dying based on player choice. Ultimately, the group ends up at the Clark family household and witness one final flashback where Carver has betrayed Mary and has her framed for witchcraft. Andrew can instruct his doppelgänger to either blame Carver and have him taken away, have Mary's doll burned, or blame Mary and have her executed.
Returning to the present, Andrew is revealed to have actually been the bus driver, Anthony, who hallucinated the present-day group and the residents from the flashbacks as figures from his past, including his family, after being forced to return to Little Hope. Depending on his treatment towards Vince, who he ultimately blamed, and whether he has a gun, Anthony will either be arrested, commit suicide, continue to blame himself for his family's deaths, or accept that the house fire was not his fault.

me and Em did another run of Man of Medan, this time determined to keep everyone alive. We succeeded! Except poor Conrad didn’t get quite a... happy ending. Seeing as how we sent him off to get the Coastguard and didn’t know where everyone had gone after we got the distributor cap back. Leaving him stuck hallucinating on the ship...
But! He’s not dead! So I believe that’s a victory, if not a moral one :)
