loved hearing about jamie and alyssa, they break my heart too. still up for hearing ollie and alyssa hcs cause i love them too
ty for also liking what i wrote when i misread your anon lol!!!
but yeah ugha them </3
she does love that little boy. when he’s first removed from her custody/is with jamie and she’s in jail and then her treatment program she talks about him alll the time to all the other women. genuinely wants so badly to be a good mom to him, wants to be better than her own was she just has so much she has to work against to get there which is draining and frustrating to her. esp when she wasn't equipped with healthy ways to handle those emotions from the time she was a child herself.
and she's *intensely* insecure about the whole situation which is why she's so standoffish w jamie when she first gets ollie back. hates that she lost custody of her son, hates that her brother who very nearly fucked his entire life up (re: his accident and discharge) is doing better than she is, hates that she's more similar to their own mom than she ever wanted to be. etc etc.
doesn't want her brother's help. sure as hell doesn't want her brother's boyfriend that works on wallstreet's help. and that insecurity just snowballs until it becomes something that gets in the way of her asking *anyone* for help when they need it and unfortunately causes so much preventable shit for both her and ollie.
but ollie's relationship to her is soo similar to jamie's with his own mom //: has that attachment to her that makes it incredibly hard for him to process realizing he was lied to about a lot/she deliberately kept him from jamie and benny. poor love. just loves his mom in spite of everything ):

Lovely 🌸
May I request from the April prompts ¹⁹⁾ half-burned candles with Olive x Dougie?
hello, darling! your request begins under the cut, and I hope you enjoy it <3
half burned candles

A match is struck on its box, sizzling as the fire meets the candle wick. Olive, putting the final touches to the table placement for her and her husband's anniversary dinner, steps back to admire her work. The white tablecloth, embroidered with dainty pastel colored flowers – a wedding gift from the Rosenthals – sits pretty on the dining table that had been so lovingly crafted by James Douglass himself, along with his best friend, Everett Blakely. Two candles sit at either side of the table, taking the places of the two empty chairs that are always there for guests. Tonight, of course, it is just the two of them, agreeing to have a quiet celebration for their first anniversary since the war ended.
Smiling at her table setting, feeling proud of herself, she steps into the hall to begin ascending the stairs in order to change in the bedroom. As her bare foot hits the first padded stair, the phone rings.
“Hello?”
“Hey, dolly…” her husband replies, his voice low and slightly aggravated.
“Hi, darling,” she coos in response. “You on your way home?”
“No, baby,” he says apologetically. She can hear him scribbling, the scratch of the pencil coming through the phone. “I gotta stay a little later, get something together for the Evening Post.”
“But it's– you promised!”
“I know, Ollie,” his tone now much softer.
“It's our anniversary; surely you've explained that?” There's a pause, the scribbling sound also ceasing. “Hello?”
“Still here, honey girl. I just don't know what to say…”
“Mhm.” Olive feels her throat close, sniffing furiously to keep the tears from falling down her cheeks.
“I'll make it up to you, okay?”
“‘Kay,” she shrugs, trying to hide her voice wavering; knowing he can't see her but acting like she's brushing it off nonetheless. “See you later.”
Without waiting for further explanation, she avoids slamming the receiver down like she desires to, instead opting to place it back in its cradle softly. Her face crumples, and she cannot help but let the tears come.
Forgetting about the beautiful blue dress upstairs, hung on the wardrobe door in its dust bag, fresh from the dry cleaners, Olive elects to stay in her comfiest clothes: a baggy t-shirt from her drama school days, along with a pair of black leggings that she hopes last a few years longer, the idea of leggings in the forties a while away. Instead, she moodily pulls a cigarette from the pack, lighting it with one of the now half-burned candles on the table and considers her next move. Her eyes fall to the telephone in her line of sight, pondering over whether to call one of the Book Club Girls and sound off to them but decides against it as her eyes swim with tears, extinguishing the candles with a puff of cigarette smoke and making her way to the living room and laying on the couch.
Watching the embers of the flickering fire sends Olive to sleep, a mixture of exhaustion from the crying and trying to make tonight special overtaking her. Her head leant on a plush cushion, she drifts off quickly, snoring softly as the coziness takes over.
She wakes to her favorite blanket being draped over her, knowing it by the delicately crocheted texture as it lands on her bare arm. She opens her puffy eyes slowly, her face feeling a little tight from the dried tear streaks that she had neglected to wipe from her cheeks and sees her husband kneeling in front of the couch she'd been sleeping on.
“I'd have been home a lot sooner, but I had to go all over town til I found your favorites.”
She looks past him to the coffee table, where the biggest bunch of peonies she's ever seen is laid. Pink, purple and white, soft petals perfectly matching the colors of spring. “Am I forgiven?”
“Always,” she sniffs. “The roast will be dry as a bone by now, but there's still cake.”
“What kind?” He purrs, nuzzling into her neck and kissing her softly.
“Your favorite.”
“You're my favorite.”
“Oh, hush,” she blushes, pulling him by the tie for a smooch. “Happy anniversary, lovey.”
“Gee, I sure love you, Mrs Douglass.”
“I love you more,” she replies, shifting on the couch as he clambers on top of her.
“Not possible.”

May I request from the things you said prompts 14. when I wasn’t meant to hear for Juliet and John?
Thank you so much for the request, darling! Sorry this is a little late, but I had an absolute blast writing this one!
things you said prompts
… when I wasn’t meant to hear, Brady and Jules
Soft voices and laughter drifted down the hall as Juliet made her way to the sitting area, where the boys had gathered. She and the girls were partaking in martinis (courtesy, as always, of Jean) on the back porch, and being the good hostess she was, had volunteered to see if the boys needed any more snacks (and to make sure they hadn’t broken anything— she was sure Johnny told them to be careful, but after the Thanksgiving mishap… well, better to be safe than sorry).
She truly couldn’t help herself from pausing at the threshold, though, her curiosity getting the better of her as she strained to hear their conversation.
“Brady, how do you do it?”
Juliet’s hackles rose slightly at Dougie’s exasperated tone, but relaxed as he continued, “The Shakespeare thing. The amount of times I’ve tried to memorize things— and I really do try!— but I’ve gotta keep going back to my notes and it ruins the whole romantic effect, y’know?”
She stifled an affectionate giggle at the thought of James Douglass quoting something sweet from The Tempest or A Midsummer Night’s Dream only to pause in the middle to rifle through the tiny notebook he kept on hand at all times ‘shit, I memorized this, hold on Ollie—’
“I tend to leave the Shakespeare to Jules,” her husband laughed. “I do my best but…”
Her smile softened as his voice turned soft and affectionate, “She quotes him better than I ever could.”
“I remember once,” John continued, the smile still clear in his voice, “We were having a study date— well, she was studying. I was just kinda watching her. Can’t exactly practice saxophone in the library…”
“Too bad you didn’t have the harmonica,” Benny quipped, to a chorus of groans from the other men, who were as tired as Jules was of that particular instrument.
“Anyway,” John pressed on as the laughter faded, “We’re in this little corner of the library, and there’s this window just above us, and she… She starts talking about this one passage, quoting it— the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, and I swear—”
The conviction in his voice surprised even her as she listened, the boys growing nearly silent so it was just John’s voice drifting into the hall.
“When she got to It is the east, and Juliet is the sun, the clouds parted just right and this ray of sunshine hit her and she was just glowing—” a soft, fond laugh at the memory, “— I kissed her right there.”
Juliet pressed her fingertips to her lips, smiling at the memory. That had been early on in their relationship, and she had been a stuttering, blushing mess afterward.
It was a memory she still held dear, though, and apparently so did Johnny.
There was a chorus of awwwwwes, a bit of ribbing from the boys about just how gone he was, even back then— though they didn’t really have a leg to stand on with that argument— and the conversation flowed to a new topic.
She waited until the warmth left her cheeks and she was able to mostly fight off the giddy smile on her face before poking her head into the room.
“Everything okay in here, boys? Anyone need refills? I see everything’s still in one piece, thank you Curt.”
“That was one time, and it was an accident—!”
“We’re alright, thanks honey,” her husband cut him off, “You and the girls still okay?”
“We’re perfect,” she smiled, tenderness tinting her voice for a moment before she resumed the role of hostess, “You let me know if you need anything, okay?"
Several thank yous followed her out of the room, and Juliet Brady was walking on air the entire short distance to the back porch, where she had yet another story to share with the girls.

Mystery/Thriller Books I Read This Year with LGBTQ+ Main & Side Characters 🏳️🌈
This year I read so many interesting mystery and thriller books and wanted to make this list because I didn't even know that there were that many mystery/thriller books that featured LGBTQ+ characters until this year. These books were all a joy to read and I hope that you'll enjoy them as well. I don't want to mislead anyone so I'll put the pairings in parentheses and let you decide which ones speak to you or not.
Ace of Spades - Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé (Main Characters)
Students Chiamaka "Chi" and Devon are tormented by an anonymous gossip account that is hellbent on ruining their senior year. If you like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars you'll love it.
All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology - Edited by Circe Moskowitz (Various Characters) and features the following authors:
Kalynn Bayron, Ashia Monet, Liselle Sambury, Sami Ellis, Joel Rochester, Joelle Wellington, Brent C. Lambert, Donyae Coles, Ryan Douglass, Circe Moskowitz
I'm not a big fan of horror novels but I found all of these short stories to be really interesting. They range from confusing to mildly unsettling to very creepy so there is something for everyone. Just a heads up there's a bit of gore but that's something to be expected in a horror novel.
And Don’t Look Back - Rebecca Barrow (Main Characters)
Harlow Ford is a teenager who has bounced from place to place her whole life due to her mother Cora attempting to outrun something or someone. While attempting to flee their current location, Harlow and her mother get into a car accident and her mother dies from her injuries. Before she dies, Cora instructs Harlow to take a key and find a safety deposit box and to "Keep running, and don't stop". In this box Harlow discovers money and new identities as well as a deed to a house and pictures of aunts she never knew existed. Harlow then has to decide if she wants to run forever or solve the mystery to her past. Nearly everyone in this book is sapphic except for a few characters.
Black Cake - Charmaine Wilkerson (Main & Side Characters)
Estranged siblings Byron and Benny Bennett, affectionately called B&B by their mother Eleanor, have to put aside their differences after her sudden death. The family lawyer reveals that Eleanor left behind various tapes detailing her life and that the last Black cake she made is in the freezer but cannot be cut until the time is right. Told in two timelines, we learn about Eleanor's life and how she came to be her mother and it's a tale of loss, heartbreak, and perseverance. If you haven't already seen it, Hulu has adapted it into a tv series and all episodes are available to watch.
Cutting Teeth - Chandler Baker (Side Characters)
The book's selling point is vampire preschoolers, but it's mainly about three mothers Rhea, Mary Beth, and Darby and their struggles with motherhood. When their children's teacher Ms. Ollie is found dead, cracks form in their friendships and personal lives as they struggle to manage their children's thirst for blood. There are two lesbian moms of one of the preschoolers that are mentioned here and there but they don't play a big part in the story.
The Golden Spoon - Jessa Maxwell (Side Character)
Six amateur bakers are invited to compete on The Golden Spoon, a baking competition hosted by a famous baker Betsy Martin. They're all whisked away to Grafton manor, Betsy's family home. The competition starts off with undetectable acts of sabotage and ends in a shocking murder. One of the reviews compared it to Only Murders in the Building because of some amateur sleuthing done by middle aged tech guru bachelor Pradyumna and retired nurse Lottie, but I don't think they're similar at all just because of the age gap. One of the contestants Peter is gay and has a husband and daughter but he is not a major player in this book. Hulu got the rights to adapt this book into a series so I can't wait to see it in the next year or two.
Their Vicious Games - Joelle Wellington (Side Characters)
After getting into a fight with a classmate, Edgewater Academy student Adina Walker loses her spot at her dream college. In hopes of reclaiming her future, she charms her way into getting accepted into a competition called The Finish. Held at the estate of the Remington family, the founders of the Edgewater Academy itself, The Finish is an intense competition that consists of three challenges: a Ride, a Raid, and a Royale. Competing along 11 other girls, many of which are bloodthirsty for victory, Adina tries to keep her humanity intact to not only win but stay alive. If you like The Hunger Games I think you'll enjoy this book. While their sexual identities aren't clearly defined, two of the female characters are in a queerplatonic relationship that at times seems more romantic than platonic. The Gotham Group has acquired the rights to a live adaptation but I'm unsure of whether or not this book will become a tv series or a movie.
Books that are part of a series are mentioned below. Struck titles are the books that were read in previous years.
Andy Mills Series - Lev A.C. Rosen (Main Characters)
Evander "Andy" Mills is a gay cop who was fired after being caught in a raid at a gay club and is now a private investigator for the LGBTQ+ community in 1950s San Francisco. I can't say too much about the series without spoiling the contents of either book so be sure to check out the goodreads pages for the summaries of the books.
TW: because of the time period there are a lot of homophobic slurs, graphic or off-page police brutality, and some violence in general
Lavender House
The Bell in the Fog
Secret Staircase Mystery Series - Gigi Pandian (Side Characters)
Tempest Raj, a former magician, joins her father's Secret Staircase Construction company that specializes in creating secret rooms for clients. In each book she encounters seemingly impossible locked in mysteries that occur in the homes of their clients while also trying to figure out the mystery behind a family curse that claimed the life of her aunt and possibly her mother who disappeared several years ago. Dahlia, a true crime writer is the older sister of Tempest's best friend Ivy is married to Vanessa, a criminal defense attorney. They along with their young daughter Natalie often end up providing advice or clues needed to help solve the mysteries.
Under Lock & Skeleton Key
The Raven Thief
Thursday Murder Club Series - Richard Osman (One of the main characters but not revealed/confirmed until Book 4)
In the Coopers Chase Retirement Village, four retirees get together every Thursday to solve a murder: Elizabeth, Ibrahim, Ron, and Joyce the newcomer. With the help of their friends Chris and Donna on the police force as well as handyman with a shady past Bogdan, there's no case this crew can't solve. The books are full of charm, wittiness, and excitement and I can't wait for book number five. Not much is known yet, but there is going to be a movie! Filming is supposed to start next year but I don't think they have released the casting information yet but I hope that they choose their cast well.
The Thursday Murder Club
The Man Who Died Twice
The Bullet that Missed
The Last Devil to Die

Final ep boyos it’s Ep 6 w Neil Gaiman and Douglas Mackinnon
- Dagon is meant to be a fish
- The crowd of people in Crowley’s supposed death bit is about 100 people
- I can’t tell if he’s joking about the flies being individually trained by Douglas or not
- last bit of queen in GO is the car arriving again
- I love that they use David Tennant having been the doctor as a basis for evoking what emotion they want like for the Bentley blowing up he was like what am I feeling here and Douglass told him it’s like the doctor watching the tardis blow up and it worked lmao
- Miranda and Michael (Madame Tracey and Shadwell)’s first day on the job was outside the airbase
- I’m one of the first drafts of the scripts Neil had Adam through the years messing with RP Tyler destroying his begonias and destroying his greenhouse but it got cut but it’s still canon in Neil’s heart
- Neil believing in the power of fandom - Douglas ‘Somebody could write a thesis just on the title sequence’ Neil ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody already has’
- Ahahaha every single audio commentary talks about the fish rain not making it
- They went to the airbase about 5 times for the whole standoff scene
- When War is showing off her flaming sword swinging the sword is actually on fire
- Douglas ‘So there is that old saying, never work with children or animals. I think you could add never work with children, animals, flaming swords’ Neil ‘Members of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Angels, Demons, Animated Benedict Cumberbatches’ Douglas ‘Medium/ prostitutes, Witchfinder sergeants, and above all, don’t do on an old airfield’
- Ollie in Adams bedroom is a ‘fake ollie’
- The same actress who plays Dagon played Auntie in Neil’s Doctor Who episode the Doctor’s Wife (Michael Sheen played House)
- Neil ‘Beelzebub takes shit from nobody’
- The fly hat was a last minute idea by Neil bc they originally wanted red fly eyes for Beelzebub’s actress but her face reacted or smthn. Amazon were a bit baffled by it at first but then they saw the Flies
- Ahhhh they’re talking about the cosplayers who do Beelzebub
- ‘Any and all genders love Beelzebub’ am I crying bc gender inclusion? You’re damn right I am
- Ahahaha Neil’s talking about the shipping of Beelzebub and Gabriel ‘That one I’m not convinced by but I love that there are people that think that’
- Awwww omg they took the kids away for the bad language scenes the kids all looked baffled and said they’d heard words like that before ahahaha
- Neil ‘Worst thing gets can come up with. And it works’ AHHHHHH
- David got bit by Ollie while acting bc Ollie was trained to bite famine and he thought it was the same sort of thing ahahaha
- Sam (Adam) is 6 months older in the time stop scene
- ‘Bembleding Cumberdink’
- ‘He had to arrive as Satan and turn into a dad’
- They originally we’re gonna do the Zira and Crowley scene giving the horsemen’s items to the delivery guy in the airbase but they couldn’t be bothered going back there so did it on the bench
- Execs were really confused that ‘Crowley’ got into a taxi instead of the Bentley having read the script and knowing full well that it’s Aziraphale then lmao
- The first dog they were offered as Ollie in South Africa was ‘about 3 times the size and a different colour’
- Adria (Anathema) said she was convinced Newt and Anathema split up after about 3 weeks and Jack (Newt) said he thought they’d stay together for the rest of their lives
- They lies before the Brass band playing Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon is actually the last showing of queen music in the show not BoRhap
- In heaven in the execution scene in the background there’s the Eiffel Tower, the pyramids of Egypt and a bunch of landmarks
- Awww Neil’s talking about how Crowley and Zira view each other as very heroic and that’s how they play each other
- Neil ‘They both look like Jeff Goldblum as they change’ Douglas ‘and Bono at one point I think’
- AHHHHH I LOVE THWM
- Theyre thanking us for loving it nO THANK YOU SIRS for this mASTERPIECE

So do benny and jamie fight for ollie again?
yeah he does come back into their care as a teenager when ev and helen figure out ohohoohmygod sawyer’s little friend is- is him.
during all that he’s not with alyssa and is in a foster placement group home for teenagers. but james and benny go scorched earth about her fucking with things/lying/making shit up on paperwork to to obfuscate that ollie always had a blood family member that would have taken him in in a heartbeat. analytical bennyTM especially was smart about it from the start and kept records of every little thing re: him being in their care, their futile attempts to keep in contact with alyssa over the years etc just in case, and they get a sympathetic judge and are able to get custody of him.
kinda both the best and worst day of jamie’s life in that he’s relieved that such a severe wrong was righted. and and and - it shouldn’t have taken over a decade. it makes him ill that ollie was wallowing like that for so long all the while being told they had no interest in him.

any ollie hcs or ollie, jamie and benny hcs? love them and love el dorado

baby ): i love him
he needed his uncle jamie so bad growing up without him. needed someone like him in his corner and not having that for so long was the root of so much havoc in his life. poor love.
it’s good when he does have him again but he’s mildly terrified of benny for a bit. doesn’t remember him as well + as alyssa spun everything jamie had chosen benny over him. which of course jamie assures him wasn’t true at all. but that trust just takes more time to build back.
makes benny sooo happy when he does start to trust him more. still remembers that little toddler that called him ben ben and used to wait by the door for him to come back from work. even when he made his peace with losing him he did always feel like something was Missing in some sense. something that doesn’t feel missing anymore when he’s home (:

breaks my heart that ollie spent so many years away from not only jamie and benny but alyssa as well. thinking about how angry and disappointed jamie is when he finds out ollie hasn’t even been with alyssa the whole time and was instead fighting to survive in shitty foster homes and grouphomes
yeah that’s def part of why jamie is so pissed at her that he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to come back to them even when was out of alyssa’s custody. he would’ve been safe with them ):
and he did have some foster parents who were nice- they weren’t all horrible. but. still would’ve been better to be with his family. when he meets sawyer at school/comes back to them he’s in a group home w other teenagers and hatesss it. doesn’t get along with the other kids, scared they’re gonna figure out he’s gay and pick on him over it, missing his mom (💔) and just having an overall BadTM time. even before ev & helen 1+1=2 he spends a lottt of time at the blakely house with sawyer to avoid the group home. sweet boy. the blakely’s don’t mind at all, esp when they’re so elated that sawyer has a friend.

ollie and sawyer being friends, omg that is so sweet
the sweetesttttt boys. sawyer has struggled socially his whole life/only really talks to the other young vets kids (lol even unintentionally in this case!) so both ev and helen are over the moooon when he comes home from 10th grade talking about how he made a friend. has maybe asked to have someone over like twice in his whole life and not since early middle school.
ollie has been through a lotta shit and is a little rough around the edges but he’s a sweet kid. was new to the school bc of getting moved to a house in the district and was kinda drawn to sawyer by him being so. quiet. sawyer didn’t ask him 50 questions about why he moved or even seem the least bit interested in him at all lmao. but ollie appreciated that and that’s what led him to start talking to him. thought maybe he could be a friend that wasn’t nosy enough to be pushed away by all his baggage. <\3
ugh baby. sawyer likes him baggage and all. likes that he “lets” him by as quiet as he is, likes that he’s okay with hanging out being sitting up in his room watching movies and reading. likes that he stands up for him with other kids being rude little shits. doesn’t know how he suddenly has a real friend of his own for the first time in his life but. really loves him.

is ollie ever scared that benny and jamie won’t fight for him? Does he ever kinda beg them like pls don’t let me go back?
he has a rough time when he’s first back with them as a teenager yeah. he missed them so much especially jamie but. it takes some time for him to fully Accept that the wrong has been righted and he’s going to be okay. very 0-100 “well why don’t you just send me back you’ve done it before!!!!” over getting into very minor trouble, gets sneaky to avoid getting into trouble because he’s paranoid about that ^, etc.
and he struggles to truly believe their (true) version of events re: being blocked out by alyssa when he was little. similar to jamie and his mom he’s attached to her in a sense and it’s. rough trying to grapple with the fact that she’d do that to him. poor baby ):

does ollie remember them tho??
he does!!! everyone is different but i have pretty clear memories from when i was 3 so to me, he does as well. and alyssa never hid he was at one point with jamie- he’s very aware of who he is. she just twisted it into a big lie about how he ultimately caved to his boyfriend not wanting kids and asked alyssa not to call him if she ever got in trouble again.
it didn’t make it into el dorado but i think i said in a different hc post that he has a little polaroid photo with jamie and benny from curt’s christmas party that he hangs onto. alyssa never tossed it out and when he found it it became something he was Really attached to like a security blanket. sweet boy ): never lost it once through all those years and so much moving around. and it’s what he shows sawyer and ev and helen when all the 1+1=2 pieces click.

yv au gaggle college age halloween costume blurb/hcs? (spurred by halloween coming up as well as the meadow fc bunny costume pic) (playboy bunny costume meadow?)
yes and jj wants to EAT her lmao he feels like one of the tweedle dum and tweedle dee guys spinning out lowkey. he's just a man !!! this is her senior year of college when they're very much together in a secret. and he's not about to be a real weirdo by rocking up to a college party lmfao he may not always use his brain but. sometimes he does. picks her up when she's done with her friends <3.
hmm naomi is def one of these people that really rocks with the inflatable dinosaur/dragon costumes. its so ridiculous but she kinda loves the ability it gives her to terrorize everyone.
when sawyer was little he wanted to be some variation of "airplane" every single year. not a pilot. an /airplane/. ev became pinterest dad of the century to make it happen for him bc it made him happy <3 when he's older i think halloween is one of those things that's a little too overwhelming for him and he prefers to stay home but. when he's a young adult and w/ ollie ollie is *obsessed* with halloween so he agrees to dress up with him because it makes him happy. is super *super* simple stuff like. construction worker lmao but. ollie thinks he's so cute he wants to bite him. appreciates knowing he's doing it *for* him.
josie is big into doing sfx makeup just as a fun little side hobby and likes doing Weird Injury Shit to her face for halloween. does it on micah a couple times too when they're younger and both still living in wyoming.
micah is lazzzyyy and 98% of the time just goes with ~cowboy~ wearing stuff he already owns. save for a slightly scarier cowboy when he lets josie do sfx makeup on him.
wyatt pre: All His Trauma. when him and sawyer are both little he's a pilot to go with his airplane a few times <3 and when he's an older teen/young adult just cycles through all the simple guy costumes you find on pinterest lmao. lumber jack, where's waldo, the year him and micah are in college together he's clark kent and micah wants to eat him <3
