the air always feels lighter with him around. she breathes easier, feels more and even wants to. when the world can cause her to feel on edge, he never does. the moment he brushes back a strand of stray hair, lips part ever so slightly before he quickly pulls away and she wishes he hasn't. "milo," he speaks his name softly, then he's telling her everything she wants to hear. a flush brushes over her delicate features, almost bashfully. "you really are the sweetest." the young woman doesn't hold back. leaning closer, she tilts her head to press the softest of kisses to his cheek and lingers, letting herself stay there a moment. only, when she does pull back, she still remains far too close. "i like that you care, but i wish you wouldn't worry so much. i'm okay. i'm always okay with you, milo."
steely blues glance down at her hand brushing against his, the smallest gesture enough to make his resolve falter. she’s always been like this, finding ways to reassure him, to lighten the moment, even when he’s the one who’s supposed to be looking out for her. " you know i never say no to your cookies, " he points out with a soft chuckle. his free palm moves almost instinctively, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face before he catches himself and pulls back. " i know you say you're okay, but … " there's a hint of hesitation in his tone, but he pushes through. " i don’t just worry because i have to. i worry because i care. maybe too much sometimes, but that’s just how it is with you. i can't help it. "

Pack your bags, Famers! Our annual winter trip is taking place in Ireland! On February 17th, all celebrities will be arriving at the Adare Manor to kick off our trip! Named the #1 resort in Europe in 2023, Adare Manor sits on 840 acres of pristine parkland.
"It’s prestige without pretense and magic without nonsense. Above all, it is the sense of belonging. You are known. You are family. You are home."
UNDER THE CUT, YOU’LL FIND THE LIST OF ROOMMATES!
Unless we got a message from you telling us you wanted to be with a specific person or were not in the ships list - you were included in the generator. If you do not see your FCs name on this list, please message us POLITELY and let us know - sometimes a name gets missed getting put into the generator. We’re human and it happens! At the same time, if your FC is on there twice by any chance then please let us know. Again, mistakes happen. As we accept new applications and people come into the group before AND during the event, this list will be updated. Same will go for if people get unfollowed or ask to leave the group. We posted the pairings in advance so that you may reach out to your roommate and get new interactions going! Even if a mun is on hiatus, be sure to reach out to them so that you can see if you can head-canon some interactions or plan for something when they are off hiatus. All trips are to encourage new interactions and unlikely connections!

Confessions:
"Careful Anon, you're going to have Kaia's shooters all in up my inbox after me again lol. 😂 (as if we HAVE to like this girl)"
Gurl we know its just 1-2 fans 😅 they seem passionate about her, ill giv them that. I think she prob got burnt ojt by modeling n decided to act, problem is shes just nt a good actor. I think being on AHS really humbled her cuz gurl limited hee comments after that, even when Ryan Murphy said she had the "best audition" he kinda set her up
I also find it interesting that she seems to always b interacting wit her bf/ex-bfs ex gfs lmao. On her ig story she has a pic of her hugging cazzie david, both of them r petes exes (and this was a book event hosted by her/hee team). Shes interacted with Vanessa yrs ago, Joey, was friends with Olivia Jade and recently Z. Nt sure if its just cuz hollywood is just small af or shes delibertly interacting with them fir whatever reason. I was shocked by her/Darnell following each other bt 1 thing bout Kaia is she know how to network lol never knew she wuld get that close to Z tho

Yea, I'm sure she probably got burnt out by modeling, and maybe started to not really enjoy it anymore? 🤷🏾♀️ That profession seems STRESSFUL, and heavily looks-based. Acting can be that way as well, but at least I don't think people freak out if you gain 1.5 lbs or something lol. Kaia also probably realized that she didn't want to always have to continue to live in her mom's shadow for the REST of her life in her career. I mean, her mom was THE "It Girl" back in the supermodeling world. Always being compared to your mom, or being called "Look-alike" daughter of Cindy Crawford has got to after a certain point get kinda annoying?? 🥴
Sometimes, you just want to make a name for yourself...and I GET that. But like you said, the problem is, she's not a good actor. Which, in itself wouldn't be so bad if she were actually WORKING on it instead of just getting roles even when doing a bad job. 🥴 Most of us "regular people" don't get promoted in our jobs when we're doing a bad job. MOST of us just get FIRED!
I also find it interesting that she seems to always b interacting wit her bf/ex-bfs ex gfs lmao. I didn't know all of the stuff about the exes tbh... But I'm not surprised if she's trying to network. I think Hollywood is just a very small place. And yea, I know she and V used to interact at events, and she even used to like pics of Vanessa and Austin together that would be posted on Vanessa's IG YEARS ago. So yea...it does seem kinda weird that now she's dating him. Almost like she's had her eye on him this entire time... 👀🥴

what if she doesn't go back? what if she stays right there with him instead? that sits better with her than the idea of leaving does, but liv knows it's not fair to him. asher deserves better – he deserves everything and she's not able to give him that. but what if she can? she's shivering, partly because she's cold and partly because she's crying while continuously trying to wipe the tears aside. "i'm sorry ..." how many times can she say that before it has no meaning? olivia is ready to leave and give asher what he wants, maybe even what he needs, but his words bring a sense of hopefulness that she hadn't been able to feel until now. plump lips pout before she nods her head and pushes inside, feeling a sense of warmth the moment the door is shut and she's out of the cold. arms still wrap around her. "i don't know what to say. i don't know ... what to do. i know i shouldn't have come here, but ... i needed to see you."
it took everything in him not to reach out and wipe away the tears streaming down her cheeks. he hated seeing her like this, and his heart was hammering against his chest as he struggled to maintain his composure. "it's too late for that, liv. i can't keep being that guy for you while you're still with him," he said, his voice filled with a mix of resignation and pain. it hurt in a way that Asher couldn't begin to explain, knowing that after he filled the void in her heart each night, she would turn around and go home to someone else. he knew the risks he was taking when he entered into this arrangement, but he had gotten in over his head; now he felt like he was drowning. he sighed, letting his inner thoughts take control for a moment. "come inside, okay? it's too cold outside for you to stand there," he added softly, trying to offer her some semblance of comfort despite the turmoil inside him.

You know what's funny? Elk is again absent from the important last date of Louis' first solo world tour (but then again she didn't attend his first date in Dallas this year either). From her socials she's been shopping and attended a wedding on 3 September 2022, which fair enough if it's a close friend or family, but out of 78 tour dates she attended about 5 (2 NY, 2 LA, London).
Also funny is Louis' band and crew having their wives and girlfriends on tour, like Matt and Zak had their partners in Spain. In Italy Tom Frisco had his Tash wife, and she filmed Chris Frewin's gf Amy Crawford at last night's Milan fest. Elk and Amy are friends, and they hung out at Glastonbury, they socialize together outside the big group, and even went on holiday overseas together. I'm happy she isn't weighing Louis down and he can fully enjoy himself with his touring crew without her around. But it is interesting when you look at their interactions.
I respect Eleanor for it really. She’s doing the bare minimum to keep the few Elounor shippers and Clifford fans happy and is only around when business and press would expect it.
She seems very much aware that hardly anyone in the fandom buys it anyway and she’s got no interest in proving it after bearding for 8 years. For that alone - I’m not keen on some BUA and then have a new gf coming in with a mediocre IG account milking Louis for followers.
I never understand why people need to point out that Eleanor is a shitty girlfriend for not being there when her calendar seems empty. Why keep bashing her for her supposed shortcomings as a girlfriend when we all know she isn’t his girlfriend?
Also the way Olivia has embarrassed herself for two years now, (it’s obvious she is new to the bearding business and unaware that Harry’s fanbase knows stunting since he was a teenager) has given us a new appreciation for Eleanor’s non-chalance in just living her life. I’m grateful for the way she handles it and how it allows all of Louis’ fanbase to focus on him and not be distracted by octopus dance moves at the side of the stage.

Hi gp! I've got kind of a strange question! Which pairings had the more dominant, fiery Christine's with more soft boi phantoms? And vice versa, which pairings had the most dominant, possessive phantoms with the softest, angelic Christine's? If there even are pairings like this! I'd like to see the dichotomy and the juxtaposition between the two extremes in the pairing! Thanks!
Ooh interesting question, one that can be a bit difficult to think of pairings for, as most actors will change their performance subtly to match their costar. But here are a few pairings with a dominant, possessive Phantom and a softer Christine:
Colm Wilkinson and Patti Cohenour - Wilkinson had a domineering, grounded, and rather sexual presence as the Phantom, while Cohenour really was, well, angelic: large-eyed, head in the clouds, ethereal, full of compassion. It made for some interesting interactions between the two.
Peter Karrie and Teresa DeZarn - A similar dynamic to the above, only Karrie was much, much crazier. Interestingly, someone who knew Karrie said that he considered DeZarn (as well as Elizabeth DeGrazia) some of his favorite actresses to perform with, as their softer interpretations made him feel protective of them.
Ian Jon Bourg and Olivia Safe - If you've seen Bourg, especially in the German productions, you know that this guy commands the stage with his booming voice (and also he's pretty tall). Olivia Safe, meanwhile, is just the most innocent, most child-like Christine he's performed with. You end up wanting to pull her Christine off the stage and protect her from everything happening to her.
Hugh Panaro and Julie Hanson - Similar to Bourg and Safe above, with two key differences: 1) Panaro is far more manipulative and mind game-y than Bourg, and 2) whereas Olivia Safe's childish innocence made her oblivious of her danger, Julie Hanson was terrified out of her mind by the end.
Hugh Panaro and Elizabeth Welch - Yes, Panaro again, but this time with Elizabeth Welch, who is more on the soft, merciful end of the Christine spectrum. Her interactions with Panaro are the epitome of, "I'm not mad, just disappointed." Not that she doesn't get angry at points, but throughout the show she doesn't looked scared or enraged, she just looks sad.
Cooper Grodin and Grace Morgan - Grodin is, well, Grodin: weird, violent, sexually possessive, pretty much the worst result you can get out of the restaged tour. Whereas Julia Udine responded by being spirited and feisty, the alternate, Grace Morgan, went the opposite way: she was sweet, she was sad, she kept trying to reach him. You want to tell her to stop wasting her tears on him.
Ivan Ozhogin and Tamara Kotova - Kotova was a sunshine-y angel whose expressions lit up the stage, while Ozhogin was aggressive and a head taller than her. I prefer her with Dmitri Ermak, who was more suave and crazy, but it's fun to watch her 'Final Lair' with Ozhogin as well, as you see her wrestling with her compassion for the Phantom versus her love and protectiveness of Raoul.
Geronimo Rauch and Harriet Jones - Going back to the more innocent Christines, we have Harriet Jones, whom I once saw described as a "tiny little ginger cutie with huge eyes that no one was expecting much from", and Geronimo Rauch, who... well he strangled her in the 'Final Lair', that should tell you all you need to know. Similar to some of the other child-like Christines, you end up feeling very protective of her (and very mad at the Phantom), but it's also incredible watching her draw upon wells of strength that you would not expect her to have.
The opposite is more difficult to think of, as the show does not work as well when you have a Christine who is more fiery than the Phantom (like, just leave girl, kick his butt). Here are a few that might fall kind of close:
Michael Crawford and Dale Kristien - I kind of included this because Michael Crawford is one of the softest, saddest Phantoms I know, and Dale Kristien is probably the most grounded, mature Christine that performed opposite him (that I've watched). Given her sympathy for him and how early this was in the show, it's not too different a performance, but it's still interesting to compare her to, say, Sarah Brightman, who was very dreamy.
Scott Davies and Meredith Braun - Meredith Braun is an interesting case because for most of the show, she would fit in better with the first category (especially with Scott Davies's Phantom, who was very in the vein of Peter Karrie). But post-'Wishing', her Christine becomes, well, scary. She never becomes violent, but she shoots the Phantom some of the scariest looks I have ever seen a Christine give. You end up fearing for the Phantom a little, should he try to force her into marriage, because her Christine would probably smother him with her pillow and escape at the first opportunity.
Jonathan Roxmouth and Meghan Picerno - I said this before in a review, but Meghan Picerno's Christine is so independent and so full of wrath that you never get the sense that she needs Raoul to protect or rescue her. It actually makes for some great chemistry between her and the Phantom, but I also get the sense that the only reason Roxmouth's Phantom remains alive is because he's, I dunno, a foot taller than her and built like a football player.
Ben Crawford and Ali Ewoldt - Okay, they don't really fit this category, I just love this gif of Ali Ewoldt chasing him and Ben Crawford flailing his arms in a panic:

February 21, 2021: The African Queen (1951) (Part 1)
The leading man!
It’s an old term from old Hollywood, and while leading men certainly exist today, it’s not something we really use anymore. And yet, we all have some concept of the leading man. First modern one that came to mind for me was Chris Evans. For the GF, it was this guy:
And that’s valid! But if we’re gonna talk about Hollywood’s leading men, we have to go BACK. FAR back, to the beginning of film, and to some of the most iconic film stars that helped define the term. These are guys like Errol Flynn, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Rock Hudson, yesterday’s Cary Grant, and of course, Clark Gable.
And some of those guys will appear on this blog at some point this year, most likely. One of them is gonna pop up this month, even! But there’s one more leading man to talk about, and that’s Humphrey Bogart, one of the most prominent of the leading men of the 1940s and ‘50′s.
I mean, come on! Casablanca! He’s a classic leading man, and I’m excited to see more of him. But every leading man needs his leading lady, and there are plenty of classic ones to choose from. Lauren Bacall, Jean Arthur, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Natalie Wood, Mae West, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Greta Garbo, Lena Horne, Sophia Loren, yesterday’s Deborah Kerr, my mom’s favorites Doris Day and Audrey Hepburn, and OF COURSE, today’s star: Katharine Hepburn.
The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner! Another classic leading lady in another set of classic films. And, OF COURSE, these two starred together in today’s movie, The African Queen. And who’s the director of this film? MOTHAFUCKIN’ JOHN HUSTON BOIIIIIIIIIIII
Director of The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Asphalt Jungle, Moby Dick, The Misfits, the original Casino Royale, and weirdly enough, Annie. AND he was an actor in The Bible, Chinatown, The Hobbit, The Black Cauldron, and weirdly enough, Annie! Goddamn, this movie’s got a lot of talent behind it! I’m genuinely looking forward to watching this, considering that it’s often considered one of the best films of the 1950s. So let’s do it, yeah? SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap (1/2)
We begin in German West Africa, where...yeah, it’s a little uncomfortable from modern day standards, as a group of indigenous people are in a service at a constructed Methodist Church, where two missionaries, Rose Sayer (Katharine Hepburn) and her brother, Reverend Samuel (Katharine Hepburn), are pretty unsuccessfully leading the singing of hymns.
As they do so, a boat called the African Queen pulls up, captained by Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart). When he pulls up, he delivers needed supplies and mail to the village, which disrupts the ceremony (thank God), and leads to an interaction between Allnut and the Sayers, who invite him to tea.
The Canadian Allnut seems to be pretty relaxed, while the British Rose and Samuel are obviously pretty stuck-up. But this is probably not going to matter soon, as Allnut delivers the news that World War I has begin, leaving the status of the British missionaries in German-occupied West Africa in danger.
And as soon as they realize this, a group of German soldiers comes through the village, and soldiers gather up all of the people from their houses, and...Jesus, they set fire to the place! Why? I mean, it’s war, duh, but WHY? The villagers are taken away for what I’m sure are totally good reasons, as the village of Kungdu burns to the ground. Samuel and Rose are left behind, and Samuel’s clearly a little fucked up by the encounter with the soldiers.
Soon after, Samuel seems ill, forgetting that they’re even in Africa. She helps him to his room, and he falls to the ground, obviously not well. It’s central Africa, so this could be malaria, trypanosomaisis, yellow fever, a BUNCH of shit. But I’m sure he’s gonna be fine. He’ll be fiiiiiiiiiiiiine.
Oh, wait, he’s dead. We find that out when Charlie arrives to deliver more bad news: people are being taken from their homes to forcibly join the army, and the villages are destroyed in order to give them no place to go back to. Which is...disgusting, fuck me.
They bury Samuel, and Charlie takes Rose onto The African Queen so that they can get away from the village before the soldiers return. This is backed by...very light-hearted music. Very poorly-timed sprightly music. I dunno, it really just doesn’t match the done, given that Sam just died, and they’re trying to escape.
We learn what some of the issues are for our two. The British won’t easily be coming because of the various German fortifications, including a large ship called the Königin Luise on a nearby lake. Said boat has a massive gun on it, posing major damage to any enemies.
But Rose has an idea: using explosive gel and some pipes and cylinders, she has an idea to use The African Queen itself as a torpedo to plow up the Luise. Charlie points out that the only where there is down the dangerous Ulanga River, and past a German fort. And Rose guilts him for not wanting to help his Queen and country. And, with that, he agrees.
From there, it’s time for a boat trip! Like a road trip, but with a boat! Katherine learns to steer, and Charlie notes that he hasn’t fixed the safety mechanism on the engine because he likes kicking it. Y’know, psychologists say that catharsis doesn’t work like that, Charlie.
It would seem that Charlie knows this, and settles instead for a drink. And as he brings out his bottle of gin, Rose looks ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED. Like he brought out a dead body instead of a bottle of alcohol; it’s even backed by this bombastic DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUN in the score! It’s weirdly hilarious.
The two take separate baths in the river, which has gotta be FULL of a bunch of stuff, but whatever. They tuck in for the night as it rains, and Charlie’s stuck outside while Rose gets the tent. Which is...supremely unfair, and ASKING for Charlie to get malaria or other diseases. Thankfully, Rose realizes this and allows him inside.
The next day, they come upon the rapids, which look dangerous...but also kind of fun, it that weird to say? I dunno, I’d go rafting down those. On a related note, I’ve never been whitewater rafting. Maybe one day, huh? Well, despite the ride and again, WEIRDLY sprightly music, they survive...and more. See, Rose LOVED it. Like, really LOVED it. She compares it to a bonafide religious experience, and says that she’s never experienced such joy from a...physical experience.
So, either she’s an adrenaline junkie, or that was some, uh...foreshadowing. Charlie’s a little less excited by this, and notes that the upcoming rapids are far worse. And Rose is just...SO FUCKING PUMPED for this. Shit, I think something’s awoken in her. Get this lady to a theme park, STAT!
But again, Charlie is NOT happy about this, and gets kinda drunk later in the day. While drunk, he insults her plan, and goes back on his agreement to go on. She calls him a coward, and she calls him a “crazy, psalm-singin’, skinny old maid.” Um, Charlie, maybe not the best idea to do that to a woman who’s just learned to joys of adrenaline and tsting her limits. She might retaliate by, I dunno...throwing all of your gin over the side of the river while you’re asleep.
Yeah, like that. Exactly like that. Some drunk fish in the river today, lemme tell you.
Anyway, despite this, Rose is pissed off, as Charlie still won’t go down the river. As he insists that all that’s down the river is death, she still insists that he promised to go. He finally agrees, despite thinking that they’re doomed to be food for the crocodiles. And so, they go.
They pass the fort, the Shona, and the Germans do indeed fire at them as they go down. And I mean the ENTIRE time they pass. They hit the engine, and Charlie has to fix it right amidst all of this. They also hit the boxes of blasting gel, but they don’t go off. And, as Rose rightly suggested earlier, the sun gets in the soldiers’ eyes as they try to fire on them. And they pass without a hitch! Except for oooooooooone tiny detail.
HALFWAY POINT! See you in Part 2!

Books read in December
I set myself some reading goals for the end of the year -- finish any books I’d already started, read the books I'd already borrowed, and to read ebooks I’d bought before buying any more. But I guess most of those books just weren’t the right genre? A few exceptions aside, this month I read a bunch of other things instead.
Also read: The Frost Fair Affair and Holiday Brew by Tansy Rayner Roberts, and Sweetest in the Gale and 40-Love by Olivia Dade.
Reread: Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn and Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston.
Total: thirteen novels (including two audiobooks and two rereads), three novellas, and three story/novella collections.
Favourite cover: The cover was what caught my attention for Finding My Voice and Old Baggage.
Still reading: Between Silk and Cyanide by Leo Marks, Or What You Will by Jo Walton and The Disorderly Knights by Dorothy Dunnett.
Next up: A Most Improper Magick by Stephanie Burgis.
*
Queen’s Play by Dorothy Dunnett (narrated by David Monteath): In 1548, Francis Crawford of Lymond arrives in France, incognito in order to protect Scotland’s queen, seven-year-old Mary. I enjoyed this, even though I am not very interested in the antics of the French court and thought The Game of Kings benefitted from having more characters who I found wholly likeable and/or who matter, personally, to Lymond. Dunnett is an impressive storyteller -- vivid descriptions, lively dialogue, nuanced characters and twists that take me by surprise. Moreover, those satisfying puzzle pieces explain the plots and intrigue, give insight into personalities and develop the narrative’s themes (here, the consequences of power).
The Kinship of Secrets by Eugenia Kim: In 1950, four year old Inja lives with her grandparents and uncle in Seoul, while her sister Miran is in America with their parents. War delays the family’s reunion. This is a fascinating portrayal of two sisters growing up in different countries, and an incredibly poignant story about a family separated. Compelling, and beautifully written, and despite moments of intense grief, hopeful. I liked how, in the end, Inja and Miran didn’t have all the answers.. But I wonder if I’d have found the ending more satisfying if I had a deeper understanding of who they both were as adults.
Teacup Magic series by Tansy Rayner Roberts:
Tea and Sympathetic Magic: Stephanie Burgis recommended this novella as something similar to her Harwood Spellbook series and it certainly has a similar appeal: romantic fantasy, bordering on comedy-of-manners territory. Like Georgette Heyer but with magic and diversity and an intention to challenge problematic and outdated attitudes. Charming and cosy, like a good cup of tea rather than a frothy hot chocolate. Miss Mnemosyne Seaborne, a reluctant guest at a houseparty. She joins forces with the other guests after an unexpected abduction occurs. Entertaining, and even though it was too short for me to really become invested, I immediately wanted to read the sequel.
The Frost Fair Affair: After her previous adventures, Mneme has new friends, a suitor and a campaign: overturning the social conventions which prevent women from travelling by portal. After someone in Town steals her political pamphlets, she gets caught up in a mystery. I enjoyed this oh so much! I found myself caring a lot more about Mneme and her relationships; I liked the mixture of intrigue and danger, and how in the cause of dealing with these, Mneme learns more about the man she hopes to marry; and the Frost Fair, on a frozen river, makes a delightful setting. I'd love to read more.
Belladonna U(niversity) series by Tansy Rayner Roberts:
Unreal Alchemy: Oh, this is my new favourite! Urban fantasy about Australian uni students who are connected to an indie rock band, Fake Geek Girl. These stories are funny, geeky and romantic, with great chapter titles and lots of fandom references. They employ different points of view and different narrative styles in a way that’s really effective. I love the characters and how important and intense their non-romantic relationships are. Between them they have a variety of romantic/sexual relationships and feelings, but friendships and familial relationships, like the one between twin sisters Hebe and Holly, also drive the narrative. The first collection contains four stories/novellas.
Fake Geek Girl -- Ferd moves into the Manic Pixie Dream House; Holly and Sage argue about the future of the band.
Unmagical Boy Story -- Viola has feelings about her best friend losing his magic, transferring colleges and making new friends.
The Bromancers -- The band and frriends spend a weekend at a magical music festival.
The Alchemy of Fine -- A prequel about the band’s origins.
Holiday Brew: This collection is more serious and less overtly fandom-y than the first, but arguably still very meta (especially if you consider Viola, Jules and Ferd as a response to the trio in Harry Potter). I sat down intending to read just one of these stories -- and ended up reading them all.
Halloween Is Not A Verb -- Holly invites various people to their mums’ place for Halloween.
Solstice on the Rocks -- A short story about university graduation.
Kissing Basilisks -- Begins on New Year’s Day, is compelling, and picks up the non-band-related narrative threads from Fake Geek Girl.
Missing Christmas by Kate Clayborn: This novella is loosely connected to Beginer's Luck but stands alone. It's sweet. Business partners and best friends Jasper and Kristen pay a last minute trip to a client and get trapped by a blizzard, which pushes them to reconsider the boundaries they’ve drawn in their relationship. I liked the moments which showed that they’re an effective team because they know each other so well and can communicate through subtle body language.
Finding My Voice by Marie Myung-Ok Lee: Ellen is a Korean-American teenager in her final year of high school. Her story is about applying for college, gymnastics training, Ellen’s relationships with her best friend and her first boyfriend, dealing with racism at school and with her parents’ expectations that she will follow her sister to Harvard. It’s very short, first published in 1993. I was aware of all the places where a YA novel written today would be allowed to give more details and to expand the story, but it was still interesting.
The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan by Sherry Thomas: I’ve borrowed this several times this year, only to return it unread each time, and I was starting to wonder if I really wanted to read it. But once I actually sat down and focused, I quickly realised that I definitely did! I became completely engrossed in this Mulan retelling. It’s a tense adventure. I enjoyed the characters and their interactions, particularly the elaborate courtesy of formal conversations, and the way Mulan and her companions value loyalty and camaraderie. I thought this was a very believable take on the whole girl-disguised-as-a-boy thing too.
Dear Mrs Bird by AJ Pearce: In 1940, Emmy wants a newspaper job but is instead typing up letters for a women’s magazine and discarding mail from readers whose problems are Unacceptable. Frustrated that Mrs Bird won’t offer advice to so many women in need, Emmy's tempted to take matters into her own hands. Her optimism means she makes some naive mistakes, some of which made me wince, but it’s also an incredible strength. She's delightful company. I really like how much of this story is about her friendship with Bunty and I enjoyed the insight into women's magazines and the Auxiliary Fire Service.
The Lonely Hearts Dog Walkers by Sheila Norton: Recently separated, Nicola moves back in with her mother, starts as a teaching assistant at her daughter’s new school, gets a puppy and joins a group of dog walkers, who embark upon a mission to save the local park. This was very low-angst and, once I realised the sort of story it was, kind of predictable. I can recognise the appeal of this brand of realism, but personally would have preferred more humour or more emotional complexity. Were Nicola a colleague, it’d be easy to find things in common to discuss, but her story wasn’t quite what I was looking for.
Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett: When Josie and her mother return to Beauty to look after the family bookshop, Josie has plans -- keep to herself, finish high school, secure a photography apprenticeship, move to LA. But after Josie accidentally breaks a store-front window and her childhood friend Lucky takes the blame, Josie’s priorities change. I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I particularly liked how Lucky subverts people’s expectations, and how Josie’s family works at communicating better with each other.
Old Baggage by Lissa Evans (narrated by Joanna Scanlan): It’s 1928 and Mattie Simpkin, a now-middle-aged militant suffragette, lives in Hampstead with her friend Florrie Lee (aka The Flea). Mattie gives lectures about the suffragettes but realises she’s not reaching the younger generation. So she starts a club for “healthy outdoor fun” for teenage girls. Mattie is wonderfully forthright -- amusing, engaging and informative when it comes to things she’s passionate about -- but she’s also fallible. A really delightful yet bittersweet story about friendship and loss and the opportunities available for women. I liked its awareness that being able to loudly be yourself is a privilege not everyone has.
There’s Something About Marysburg series by Olivia Dade:
Teach Me: Rose is unimpressed -- not only must she share her classroom with the new history teacher, he’s been given her Honors World History class. There’s something particularly satisfying about people who have been hurt and lonely finding support and love in each other. I like that they get to know each other over many months. I like Martin’s relationship with his teenage daughter and Rose’s relationship with her ex’s parents is so touching that one scene made me cry. And it was interesting seeing the US school system from the perspective of experienced teachers; I appreciated the details about their jobs.
Sweetest in the Gale: a Marysburg story collection contains three novellas about couples in their forties.
Sweetest in the Gale -- Griff is worried when Candy, a fellow English teacher, returns for the new school year uncharacteristically sombre and subdued. A really sweet romance about people who are navigating loss and grief.
Unraveled -- Maths teacher Simon is assigned to observe and mentor the new art teacher, Poppy. I enjoyed the threads of mystery.
Cover Me -- After a concerning mammogram result, Elizabeth marries an old friend so she’s covered by his health insurance. Predictable as anything, but that made it a safe position from which to explore serious and sobering topics.
40-Love: I’m not interested in tennis or holiday resorts; I was disappointed that this novel wouldn’t show Tess being an assistant principal; and even though some of my favourite fictional couples have a significant age-gap, I’m wary about age-gap romances (and socially-programmed to think it’s odd for a woman to date a much younger guy). But I liked the other stories in this series and I was curious. It’s Not really My Cup of Tea, but I was convinced that Tess and Lucas were both capable of making their (somewhat unconventional) relationship work. An interesting exercise in challenging my social-programming.
The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn: After watching Bridgerton (not always to my tastes but mostly fun), curiosity prompted me to read the opening of the second novel, and I was so entertained by Kate Sheffield verbally sparring with the viscount, whom Kate is determined to prevent from marrying her younger sister. I continued to be entertained up until the viscount acts a bit too entitled on his wedding night (that’s unattractive, if outrightly problematic). Which left me in rather an uncharitable mood for the final act, so I can’t identify if the drama of dealing with past traumas didn’t meet the standard of the earlier comedy or if I just hold such scenes to differing standards.

was vivien close with any other hollywood actresses?
Off the top of my head, I remember Katharine Hepburn was her bridesmaid and she maintained a phone correspondence with Joan Crawford. Olivia de Havilland always seemed to speak kindly of her, though I don’t know how close they actually were. Lauren Bacall was also a friend, she got on with Carole Lombard the (very) few times they interacted, there’s that famous picture of her with Deborah Kerr, I remember reading a favorable interaction between her and Ava Gardner, Bette Davis stayed with Vivien at least once, there are photos of her with Ingrid Bergman- though I don’t know if they ever interacted, she showed admiration for Greta Garbo (but who didn’t from Vivien’s era lbr), Lucille Ball once visited her after one of her theatrical performances…that’s it, off the top of my head, regarding American Film actresses that I can think of.
Thank you for the question! :)

so out of touch with her surroundings, liv finds herself lost in her own thoughts until a voice captures her attention. when she looks up to see him, a smile curves at her full lips. "since when do you have to ask if you can ask me anything." is their connection a little odd and maybe concerning? she doesn't think so. he makes her feel a comfort she's never felt before, but maybe that's not a good thing because he's not her spouse. "you can ask me anything," she speaks, pushing herself up and motioning towards his near empty glass. "do you need a refill?"
he acknowledged the impropriety of his feelings, yet with each passing moment they spent together, his affections grew more pronounced. he was certain they deserved far better than their current spouse, convinced he could offer them something better. however, they seemed oblivious to this. observing them now, he knew silence was no longer an option. ❛can I ask you something?❜

for the meme: melissa mccall, camille belcourt, annnd chiyoh? ^.^
such good picks!
melissa mccall. also known as one of the loves of my life.
Braeden. the rarest of rarepairs. the one I will never stop loving.
Marin. also a super duper rarepair. y’all need to step up your Melissa femslash content.
Noshiko. I needed like 10x the number of scenes with these two that I got.
Derek. a long time ago, I had an idea for a fic with these two, and all I remember is that it involved Derek bringing Melissa flowers, and I love them and haven’t seen content for them in ages.
Talia Hale. I adore AUs with them, either ones where Talia didn’t die and there’s some kind of canon divergence or ones where they went to school together.
Runner-Ups: I’ve read one or two really good ones with her and Kali, but otherwise, there isn’t really anyone else. at this point, I’m basically just totally indifferent to Chris/Melissa or Melissa/Sheriff.
camille belcourt
ah yes, the new love of my life, because I needed yet another morally complicated, absolutely gorgeous woman to snatch away my heart. anywho.
Clary. there’s so many different ways that they could work together.
Magnus. god, I wish there are more of these two in canon. I need to know more about their complicated past together.
Dot. I need more content for these two, and I’ll damn well write it myself if I have to.
Maryse. I just thought of this, but just imagine how damn angry they could be together.
Olivia Godfrey, from Hemlock Grove; I left a prompt on the ficathon saying that they would either murder each other or fuck until they brought a house down, and honestly, I’m down with either.
Runner-Ups: look, at this point, if it’s femslash and Camille is involved, I’m into it (I really am that transparent)
chiyoh (deserved better, but that’s neither here or there)
Bedelia. God, just imagine these two bonding over Hannibal has changed/fucked up their lives.
Alana. I doubt if there’s a single fic out there for them, but I would really be interested to see that dynamic in a story, see these two people who’s lives have been so shaped by Hannibal in differing ways.
Clarice Starling, because fuck yes, that’s why.
Bella Crawford. It would be interesting to see how they would interact.
Molly Graham (because y’all know I love femslash, and these two both deserved so much better, so why not have happiness together).
Runner-Ups: literally any Hannibal femslash pairing because I just want to see more of her. Also, I ship her with pushing Will off of a goddamn train, because even though I love Will, that’s still one of my damn favorite scenes of the whole show.
(when you filter out the Hannigram tag on AO3, there are literally 25 fics with Chiyoh in them, and that is frankly bullshit.)
#thank you for asking ella!!#my femslash bias is showing very strongly in this#ask game#long post#lesbiancleophas

Our rural idyll is under threat by new Sizewell road and it wont help
After two decades of fast-paced city life in London, Dublin and New York, my wife Michaela and I decided it was time to put down roots and ease up a bit.
On our first viewing, we knew Fir Tree Farm in Suffolk was ideal for raising our daughters, Olivia, 14, Amelie, 13, and Ruby, 11, and so it was that five years ago we moved to the country.
Nestled in several acres with two ponds and woodland, the 17th-century farmhouse gave us the tranquillity we had longed for.
Dashed hopes: Paul and Michaela with their daughters, Olivia, 14, Amelie, 13, and Ruby, 11, at their beautiful rural retreat in Suffolk
The Fields paid £685,000 for the house. It was valued at £900,000 before EDF made its plans public. A sale is unrealistic, estate agents told the family, unless they slash the price
It is so secluded that our only neighbours are acres of arable farmland, hares we can watch boxing and skies so dark that on clear nights you can see satellites hurtling through space like shooting stars.
We spent last year getting permission to extend the four-bedroom farmhouse and replace a dilapidated barn so we could provide accommodation for our parents, whose dependency on us has become more pressing.
Despite the family challenges many couples of our generation face, we knew we were very lucky. Fir Tree Farm and the lifestyle it gave us was like wearing a warm, cosy jumper on a crisp, frosty morning.
But then, last October, EDF Energy wrote to tell us it was launching a final consultation on plans to build two nuclear reactors at Sizewell, about eight miles from our home — and our property had been identified as possibly being affected.
EDF wants to build a road from the A12 towards Sizewell. The road would go up against the boundary between the Fields’ property and neighbouring farmland
I called EDF and was told curtly that letters were being sent to hundreds of people.
No, they couldn’t say how the Sizewell C plans would affect us. Yes, we’ll be consulted in due course. No, there’s no date for when that will be.
After making some inquiries, someone with knowledge of the plans told me EDF wants to build a road from the A12 towards Sizewell. No other property would be impacted as much as ours because the road would go up against the boundary between us and neighbouring farmland.
Paul (pictured) said: ‘Fir Tree Farm and the lifestyle it gave us was like wearing a warm, cosy jumper on a crisp, frosty morning’
Michaela and I felt sick, but we decided not to tell our children until we had a clearer picture.
After making half a dozen calls to EDF for information, I was invited to a meeting by Tom McGarry, head of stakeholder engagement for Sizewell C. ‘We don’t want your property,’ he said. ‘We’ll go round it.’
The first of my interactions with EDF set the tone for subsequent ones: paucity of detail and brutally cold communications. Worse was to come when EDF publicly released its proposals in January.
In a field bordering Fir Tree Farm, crops grow on rotation.
The only pollution is at harvest time, when our windowsills get a light covering of dust and we have to remember not to leave washing on the line when the combine harvester is out.
The proposals revealed that in this field, EDF would locate a construction compound for 300 workers and 175 trucks a day for two years while it builds its new road.
That would start with a roundabout in the field and run for five miles towards Sizewell, where building two nuclear reactors would take ten years.
EDF admits our home would suffer ‘significant adverse effects’ from noise. At the peak of construction, 1,500 HGVs and 6,000 other vehicles would thunder past each day.
The proposals also make clear that the proposed roundabout would be lit by 33ft-high lighting columns — so no more stargazing for us. Oh, and did I mention the air pollution forecasts?
Construction would start in 2021, encompassing the period when two of our daughters would be doing A-levels and GCSEs.
The property (pictured) is so secluded that the family’s only neighbours are acres of arable farmland, and on clear nights you can see satellites hurtling through space like shooting stars
Last year, the family (pictured) got permission to extend the four-bedroom farmhouse and replace a dilapidated barn so they could provide accommodation for their parents
The only pollution is at harvest time, when the family’s windowsills get a light covering of dust and they have to remember not to leave washing on the line when the combine harvester is out
The level of disruption would make studying and working impossible. Both Michaela, a landscape artist, and I, formerly of the Mail and now a technology investor and adviser, work from home.
The plans we had made for our parents were wrecked as soon as EDF disclosed the road. Yet we still have a pressing need for more room.
The last thing Michaela and I want for our daughters is the upheaval of moving from a home we love, but we accepted there is no alternative.
Reluctantly, we wrote to EDF to ask them to buy us out. Given the £14 billion cost of Sizewell C, surely EDF could afford to be sympathetic to our situation?
How foolish we were to think EDF would be fair to us. We felt we were being extremely reasonable, given the huge sacrifice we were willing to make by moving.
When we got a response, five weeks later, EDF flatly refused to acquire the property.
Should we try to sell? We paid £685,000 for the house. It was valued at £900,000 before EDF made its plans public. A sale is unrealistic, estate agents told us, unless we slash the price.
EDF Energy launched a final consultation on plans to build two nuclear reactors at Sizewell, about eight miles from the Fields’ home
We assumed there would be a legal remedy. Alas, no. The first opportunity to formally make a compensation claim for blight is when a proposed road has been approved, which, in the case of Sizewell C, is 2021 at the earliest. Until the road gets approved — and even then there could be a long and costly legal process to prove blight — we are stuck with a house worth less than we paid for it, and which fails to meet our needs.
The feeling of having our hands tied behind our back is bad enough, but this helplessness is compounded by EDF rubbing our nose in it.
At a public exhibition, I told Jim Crawford, the project developmet director, of my frustration that EDF had not engaged with me about our situation.
His PR man started laughing, as he waved his arms in the direction of the display boards in the room, saying: ‘What do you think this is? We are engaging with you!’
He smirked when I asked: ‘Why are you laughing? There’s nothing funny about the anxiety EDF is causing my family.’
This is not a story of Nimbyism, nor is it an emotive way to make a case against nuclear fuel. No, after months of trying to appeal to EDF to treat us fairly, this is about how big business can run roughshod over ordinary people like a bulldozer crushing farmland to make way for a new road.
We’ve been struck by how a single event can make you feel as though the walls are falling in around you, and you’re powerless to do anything to stop it.
Mr Crawford says: ‘We are asking the local community what they think of plans for Sizewell C. We have met with Mr Field and other people who could potentially be affected by Sizewell C proposals, with the most recent meeting held last week. We will take on board the feedback we receive and provide appropriate mitigation.’
Read Paul’s blog at https://sizewellc.org/
What is the cost to the consumer of building Sizewell C?
Building Sizewell C also comes at a high cost to the consumer. By 2030, around a quarter of the UK’s energy needs must be found from new sources because 14 of our 15 existing nuclear reactors are due to start closing by 2025 when remaining coal-fired power stations are also set for decommissioning.
In the last four months Toshiba and Hitachi have pulled the plug on new nuclear plants at Moorside in Cumbria and Wylfa in North Wales, after failing to secure investment. This potential shortfall in electricity for the UK makes a strong case for building Sizewell C, although the cost to the consumer is likely to be eye-watering.
When EDF got approval from the government to build Hinkley Point C in Somerset, it struck a lavish deal that locks in the price for electricity at an index-linked £92.50/MWh – almost twice the cost of energy generated by wind power. It is expected Sizewell C would require a similar strike price, which could result in higher energy bills.
Consumers could also be impacted by Sizewell C due to the way EDF intends to raise investment. It has said it will look to pension funds, including public sector pots, to finance the £14 billion construction.
EDF, which lost 200,000 customers to rival energy firms last year and saw earnings for its UK business fall 16.5% to £691m, has been lobbying the Government to consider a new form of financing for nuclear. Known as the regulated asset base model, it means EDF would impose a charge on consumers during the construction phase.
This could be controversial and calls are already being made for the Government to focus on a renewables-led energy strategy given the pace of technological advances and the considerably lower costs of offshore wind. Sir John Armitt, chairman of the the National Infrastructure Commission said the government should put the brakes on plans for a nuclear new build programme, arguing that wind and solar could deliver the same capacity as nuclear for the same price, with the added advantage of carrying less risk.
‘One thing we’ve all learnt is these big nuclear programmes can be pretty challenging, quite risky – they will be to some degree on the government’s balance sheet,’ said Sir John. ‘I don’t think anybody’s pretending you can take forward a new nuclear power station without some form of government underwriting or support. Whereas the amount required to subsidise renewables is continually coming down.’
There are also serious questions about Chinese involvement in the UK’s infrastructure. EDF, which lost 200,000 UK customers last year, is already propped up by the Chinese state-owned China Nuclear Group.
Last October, an assistant US Secretary of State, Christopher Ashley Ford, explicitly warned the UK against partnering with CGN, claiming that the business was taking civilian technology and using it for military purposes. In recent weeks, concerns about Huawei, the Chinese telecoms company, prompted calls for the government to push back on closer energy ties with China.
Isabel Hilton, CEO of Chinadialogue, says the UK opening up vital infrastructure to China is unparallelled in the western world. ‘No other OECD country has done this. This is strategic infrastructure, and China is a partner but not an ally in the security sense. You are making a 50-year bet, not only that there will be no dispute between the UK and China, but also no dispute between China and one of the UK’s allies. It makes no strategic sense.’

PLEASE LIKE THIS NOTICE WHEN YOU HAVE READ IT AND SO THAT YOU CAN KEEP TRACK OF THE LIST UPDATES!
