I love how people misuse the word queerbaiting just as a way to hate on something now! You have people calling YOI queerbaiting despite it having an explicitly canon gay relationship. 

You also have people throwing around the word queerbaiting when ships they want to be canon aren’t happening (or aren’t happening yet), which is SO damaging (i.e. Klance is queerbaitng, SteveBucky is queerbaiting). 

Deep friendship between two characters of the same gender is not queerbaiting, even if you do think the story would be better served by going a romantic route!

 It’s a very specific thing! It involves deliberately teasing things that are undeniably gay (i.e. having other characters comment on how gay they are, having them make innuendo-ish comments toward each other that don’t pan out to anything, the creators stringing fans along like this, etc). BBC John/Sherlock is queerbaiting, House/Wilson (a few years old but) is queerbaiting, etc.

A couple:

- Bigger fandoms are always a mess. Always. It’s not just the Steven Universe or the Yuri on Ice or the Volton etc etc fandoms, they are always a clusterfuck. It’s inevitable when you have that many people with different opinions and values all thrown in together. Best advice I can give for avoiding drama is find your own small corner with people you like, and stick to it.

- People really need to stop pretending they have any actual idea how an episode or movie or whatever is thrown together. No, one story-boarder on a show probably isn’t responsible for a plot you don’t like. No, two co-creators on a show will likely be working together and bounce ideas off each other, and it makes no sense to put one up on a pedestal and praise as goddess or whatever, while muttering under your breath about the other one being a toxic influence who should leave the project.

-The concept of queer-baiting, or just ship-baiting (since I’ve seen the term also used for het couples) is so over-used that it honestly feels meaningless now. It used to mean something very specific, now it’s ‘my ship didn’t get together so that means it was baiting’.

- I don’t mind break-up or angst fic because I get bored with fluff/happy stories after a while. Sometimes the soul craves sadness, people.

oh christ alive, the goddamn fucking threesome requests. i used to get SO MANY of those, or requests from people looking for someone to join some kind of poly arrangement. the former was just so mindbogglingly irritating and gross and made even less sense than usual (although i suspect these fuckers were probably just thirst-messaging random people en masse)

I love the HP au but I also don’t have any other plans for it. I have a storyboarding internship starting on monday and that’s going to be taking up the most of my time for the next three months and I’ve got a lot of wips and other things planned that’d I’d like to finish before it anyway! I think Victor is less of a playboy than he's rumored to be but has still had some loneliness sex like people have mentioned. (I'm also one of those people who thinks he and Chris have fooled around at some point.) I tend to hc Victor as gay and Yuuri as bi. It's interesting though that while in YOI universe homophobia doesn't seem to exist, some presumption that people are straight until proven otherwise does (Victor asking Yuuri if there was a girl he liked in the scene in Victor's room)

I get what you’re saying, but it’s a different situation. White supremacy is part of America’s cultural DNA, a president for 4chan nazis is perfectly in keeping with the tradition of Jefferson Davis, Father Coughlin, George Wallace, David Duke and Rush Limbaugh. There’s no far-left in America. Bernie is at best an advocate for Scandinavian-style redistributionist capitalism, and he gets away with calling himself a socialist because of it.  I’ve seen the kinds of politics that have gained currency throughout American history, and trust me, we’re in no danger of living under a dictatorship of the proletariat.

we’re all good. You just happened to hit a nerve with this topic. We all have to live together and I think we should all treat each other with respect. (Most) smokers ignore that - and by smoking they automatically harm others. While most healthy people won’t die because of a bit of smoke, it could seriously harm elder people. The woman next to you might be pregnant. And think of the kids. (Not onl in real life, on tumblr too - I think as adults we have a responsibility and this doesn’t disappear just because we are online. I know of minors following me and I won’t glorify risky and inconsiderate behaviour by honouring that with a sketch. Or telling them that smoking doesn’t harm you as much and that they can still do sports or sing. It would feel like lying to them.) One of my best friends has athma, and not being able to breathe properly sucks. You are entitled to your opinions just like I am entitled to mine. Hi! First of all I'm sorry I keep sending asks. I really love Blackbird and keep re-reading bits of it; I think it's my favorite fanfiction I've ever read, and one of the few where I think I'd seek it out and enjoy it even if it had completely original characters. Anyway, as another WWII/Cold War history buff I really appreciated how much research you put into it. I was wondering, since I'm in a PhD program and saw you used to be, how do you motivate yourself to do all that for fanfic? (cont)

(cont) I've always wanted to write more historical fiction, including historical AU fic, but the motivation to research for that always runs away from me when I already have to do so much research in my "regular job" (especially since I'm in a history-adjacent field). Thanks! And your research advice in the last ask is really good -- really similar to what I tell my students!

Honestly one of the reasons I didn’t write fic for about five years was because I was Doing Academia and it sucked away all my energy for both writing and research.

But generally speaking, I’m motivated to research things because I just love learning stuff. I find it as fun to hunt down a 2016 Japanese tv drama that sounds like something Mari would have watched as to rifle through books and other peoples’ PhD theses to find out what German air raid sirens sounded like. The whole process is fun and intellectually stimulating for me, and at the end of it I have both learned more facts and am able to write some more fic, so it’s win-win.

With Blackbird it also helped that that story absolutely burned to get told. Once the idea took shape, I couldn’t not write it. I think I’ve said to people before that in many ways it feels less like something I wrote and more like something that just happened to me; I was along for the ride like everyone else.

Back in 2011 or whatever when multiple/otherkin shit was really big on Tumblr I used to send them ridiculous anons to see if they had any bullshit detectors whatsoever (because they usually didn't). One of the things I would do was claim to be historical figures and then complain my history class "got them wrong," and now I feel like I really missed the boat by only picking European ones. Oh, god. Here we go:

I am fine with Yurio getting the gold and Yuuri getting the silver. Yep. I said it. Mostly because for me personally I never really cared over who got which medal (well, Otabek should have gotten bronze BUT ANYWAY), because it's more important to me Yuuri found his actual love and overcame his crippling anxiety - tick, got both - and Yurio is starting to find his agape. Tick. Got that.

(and Yurio's inevitable struggle with his changing body and finding his own way as a skater is going to sting all that much more when he's currently at the top of his game. Got to love that angst).

If anything - this is a sports anime, people. Main protagonists never get the gold or go to the nationals first time round. Makes it all that much sweeter when they get the victory next time.
