Out, But Not Down: Scott Birdsall On Driving Pikes Peak In The 1400hp Diesel-Powered “Old Smokey” Ford.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is 12.42 miles of climbing turns, 156 corners, to be exact. At the finish line, you’re 14,115 feet in the air, what’s left of the air, anyway. It’s a major undertaking, and we were delighted and impressed when we saw that Scott Birdsall was bringing the Chuckles Garage diesel-swapped 1949 Ford F1 pickup to take on the challenge of the 2018 race. Then there was a slight problem, which led to us wrongly saying that Birdsall was out of the race when he had a minor get-off during a tire test in early June.  It’s like we don’t even know Birdsall! Of course a nose job and some frame repairs weren’t going to stop this man from coming back. In just a little more than a week, Birdsall and his team had pulled the truck out of the ditch, rebuilt the entire front suspension—which included machining and welding replacement A-arms—and Old Smokey was back on the mountain for the first day of practice.

“It was going really good,” Birdsall told us. He said the truck was fun to drive, and while there was a minor issue in the third member, it wasn’t anything that would have stopped him from competing. Old Smokey was running in the Exhibition Class, there being no “Total Bonkers Turbo Diesel Pre-1950s Truck,” category. At Pikes Peak, several classes run together during practice, so Birdsall was able to see how he stacked up against all kinds of other vehicles, including a gaggle of Porsche GT4 Caymans. “I was right in the middle of the Porsche cup guys,” he said. Pretty impressive for a RWD pickup with no modern traction assists.

Ah, but nothing lasts forever, not even a solidly built Cummins turbo diesel. At the end of practice, Birdsall noticed a metallic chatter that grew steadily louder as he came down the hill. Back at the base of the mountain, the team found metal in the oil, and oil in the puke tanks. “I didn’t want to be the guy who oils down Pikes Peak on race day,” said Birdsall, so he reluctantly withdrew from the race. “I felt terrible,” he said. “It was hard to give in. We spent 10 days rebuilding the truck after the crash.”

Still, it wasn’t wasted effort. Birdsall says he learned a ton about setting up the truck for Pikes Peak, and they made many changes which made the pickup more suitable for the hillclimb, including a completely different Garrett turbo set-up, new injectors, custom dampers, and larger 18×12 and 18×13-inch wheels with the same slicks as his “teammate,” the Flying Lizard McLaren 12C GT3. “I know, I know, it’s quite the combination,” he said, laughing when I raised an eyebrow at the idea of a ’49 Ford and a race-prepped super car being on the same team. That’s just what Pikes Peak is like though, the cars are all different, but the spirit is the same; Who can best the mountain?

“I’ve wanted to do Pikes Peak since I was a kid. I used to watch this race with my dad,” said Birdsall. Did it meet his expectations? “My first run was in a rental car and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into. It doesn’t help that I’m scared of heights.” Birdsall says he’ll be back in 2019 to get his revenge on the road that beat him this year. In the meantime, he’s got a full schedule of plans for a truck that has already been drifting, landspeed racing, road racing, done burnouts at the Hoonigan garage and carried him up a mountain. “Why not do everything?” he says. “It doesn’t have any limitations.”
