#TB before I left for Thailand, I hit the #OldGlobeTheater in San Diego to see Hamlet. There's an amazing actor I may be working with in the near future doing the play till September 22nd. If you want some culture in your life or just want to look cool for a date, go see it!!! #Art (at Old Globe Theatre)

For the love of drama.
No, not that kind of drama. It’s about -- Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall.
Innit very appropriate for these time? Around and after the election, but we are not talking about that directly this time.
We decided to squeeze a little bit of time in our weekend for a splash of Shakespeare by Old Globe, titled Measure for Measure. Every year, the Old Globe reaches out to the community and provides free play. The cast members are professional actors and actresses and it is played in midst of the audience without obstruction to behind the stage. Ahh mazing.

Which what LM and I love. LM really enjoyed watching the backstage (or around the stage) staffs active support for the cast members. Since the center stages were small, about 10 x 10 feet, most of the cast members played two characters, so the costumes really highlight the different characters. It was a delight to see what construct the complete costume. It was only shown when they changing out right next to us!

Picture was taken from Broadwayworld.com, taken by Jim Cox.
The cast included Makha Mthembu as Isabella, Daniel Petzold as Angelo, Barnardine, and Christopher Salazar as Duke Vincentio, Elbow. All three are the lead role. Then Ally Carey as Pompey, Provost, Jake Millgard as Lucio, Froth, Nathan Whitmer as Claudio, Lisel Gorell-Getz as Mistress Overdone, Mariana, Servant/Secretary, Flordelino Lagundino as Escalus, Abhorson, and Davina Van Dusen as Juliet, Friar Peter.
They were joined by DJ Miki Vale, who provided Unbreak My Heart by Tony Braxton and Who Run the World by Beyonce (as the closing song) among others. The creative staff includes Sean Fanning (Scenic Design), Shelly Williams (Costume Design), and Jess Slocum (Production Stage Manager).
It was slightly confusing for LM at first due to the dual role. Especially when Duke Vincentio was also pretending to be Friars Lodowick. After using a 5 minute interlude to explain it to LM, the play began to make a little more sense.
Mistress Overdone’s costume, which was worn above by Lisel Gorell-Getz, is LM’s favourite. Within our quick interview with the actress, she confessed that it was also her favourite costume that she had fun wearing. She even asked to borrow it for Halloween, alas it didn’t come true.
LM’s question to her was how could they not get tired from changing costume so often. In her defense, she didn’t do it by herself, and none of the other cast members too. The staffs helped them tremendously, that’s why there’s never a spot in theater that is not important. Even who # 4 -- which is who LM would be playing as in Why Grinch stole Xmas’s school production -- will also very important.
Ms. Gorell-Getz also moderated the ask and tell session for after show where the audience had a chance to pop a question or two to the cast. One thing that we learnt was that Shakespeare’s words were not even the norm for his era, so the struggle that the modern day cast feel is not something new. Shakespeare was always that odd one out, we guess, one of the most brilliant odd ones.
Ms. Mthembu also revealed the method that original casts, hundred years ago, done. Unlike now, Shakespeare would give different script to different part of the cast. Each one of them only received their parts. Whoa, that was challenging, but in a way how the real life would be. We wouldn’t know how the other person react, we could make prediction in our relationship but we never can know for sure. And to bring this experience to the stage was nothing less than genius.
We would like to personally thank Mr. Bradley-Ballentine who approached us even after the ask and tell session ended. He noticed LM raised hand earlier and invited us to talk to Ms. Gorell-Getz. You made our day!
So bravo everyone that was involved, including the audience. This is LM second exposure to Shakespeare and first on theater.  We had so much fun!
