"There's no hope for him now, Travis. He's suffering. You know we've got to do it." "Yes, Mama. But he was my dog. I'll do it."
[image description: six gifs arranged in two columns to show a parallel. The gifs on the left are from the 1957 movie Old Yeller. Travis raises his shotgun; Old Yeller turns his bloodied face towards the camera; Travis struggles not to cry as he holds the shotgun pointed at Old Yeller.
The gifs on the right are from Black Sails. Silver raises his pistol; Flint's bloodied face looks sadly at Silver; Silver sets his jaw as he holds the pistol pointed at Flint.

You know how Neo Cons & Repubs are always going on about how great Disney was when they were kids? I guess that they absolutely forgot the Horror Movie (for any dog owner) of 1957's Old Yeller. Yikes! Anyhow thought about it while doing the blog this morning because: Birthday Remembrances. Today, June 10, 1949 – Kevin Corcoran, American actor, director, and producer (d. 2015) was born. Old Yeller by Fred Gipson
1957 Newbery Honor Book
Adapted by 4th Grade GT Students of Shanklin Elementary (2024)
From Luling, TX
Judges' Remarks: A brief, brutal, and darkly funny sprint through the grimmest parts of the story. The highlights of this movie are definitely the two dog fights, which were done with great energy and commitment by the dog-costumed performers, including the fight when an ear gets torn off! I couldn't always hear the narrator, but I could mostly understand the plot through the onscreen action, including the two different scenes in which two different dogs get put down. The performances were fun and committed, and the background music was well-chosen for the setting.

Chris: On vacation and watching a movie a day for one week about animals, never seen this drama before about a barbarian family in the early days of the United States who take in a dog that they use to attack just about every animal in the wilderness until calamity strikes, not a good animal film for me, Avoid.

I realize that Old Yeller is a sad movie for everybody, but I wonder if a study would find that it has a particular impact on oldest male children because deep within us we know that if our dog had hydrophobie and our dad was away, WE would have to be the one to shoot it...
