Have you ever wondered what's the difference between a Beta and VHS tape? Like, physically? They're both half-inch (12.7mm) magnetic tapes, after all... and you can't exactly put a beta tape into a VHS VCR, or vice versa... but what if we opened up the cassettes and transplanted the tape between them?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I opened the beta (left) and vhs (right) tapes
Tumblr media
I wound the tape from the beta onto the VHS tape
Tumblr media
I needed to unspool the old VHS tape, which is hard. this thing is nearly a half-kilometer long, about 1400 feet. So how do you do that? A POWER DRILL!
Tumblr media
And I put it back together. And I stuck it in the VHS VCR, and hit play.
Tumblr media
Well, it doesn't really show anything. The VHS VCR can't decode the Beta signal, because it's encoded differently. There's no sound, either.
But what about the tape? Is it similar enough to VHS tape that we could record onto it?
Tumblr media
YEP! Without any issues.
I'd love to try the opposite way, but I don't have as many beta tapes to spare, and also my beta VCRs are barely functional as it is, they have trouble playing beta tapes, let alone VHS tapes in horrible hybrid forms.

Hey, since I’ve seen more people on my dash talking about The Muppets in general lately, here’s some links to older muppet media I’ve had trouble looking for in the past and even though they don’t seem as hard to find now, a lot of people might not have heard about them if they aren’t into muppets, so if you’re interested or want to watch something different or just kill some time here ya go
(All or most of these are uploaded by the same user and while their account has tons of muppet media it’s a little scattered so I wanted to put these specific ones together for ease)
Here’s Hey Cinderella!, a muppet production of Cinderella. I love the stepsisters and this has one of the few muppet monsters that have ever made me feel uneasy
Here’s the Muppets Musicians of Bremen, which features no human actors,
Here’s The Frog Prince, featuring the first appearances of dear Robin and Sweetums
Here’s The Great Santa Claus Switch, this upload has multiple sections of video because it contains everything featured in the dvd, the third one is the start of the movie itself
Here’s the lovely, heartwarming Emmet Otters Jugband Christmas
And here’s the two original pilots, The Muppets Valentines Show plays first and is then followed by The Muppets: Sex and Violence. They stick a little bit they’ll play through just fine.
I hope people enjoy and if there’s any interest I’d be more than happy to make another group post with links to other older muppet specials, just let me know!!! I watched all these and others while I was pretty sick last week

I found some scans of a very old magazine among my files - it seems I scanned them back in 2017, while testing the scanner or something. Quick google search revealed this was a Wired issue from 1995, themed around hypothetical scenarios of the future.
You can read the whole thing here: https://archive.org/details/wired-scenarios/page/n29/mode/2up
Additonal page in my files - NSFW ish.

Media: Cassettes
Tonight, I feel like my whole body is made out of memories. I'm a mix-tape, a cassette that's been rewound so many times you can hear the fingerprints smudged on the tape.

Welp...
So... I was listening to an old-time radio episode from 1952 that Paul Frees was in, and towards the end of the episode, Paul's character describes another character with dialogue that leaves no shadow of a doubt that said character was asexual.
My momentary joy at "1952 ace rep!!!!" was quickly eclipsed as Paul's character continued that the other character saw herself as broken because she "was unable to love" and, to make a long story short, she was so depressed that she begged Paul's character--who loved her and she wanted to return his feelings but couldn't--to mercy kill her so that she didn't have to suffer the pangs of a broken heart and watch him suffer the same.
That was... not fun to hear, even in (especially in) his voice.
I don't blame Paul, of course--I blame whoever wrote that script (and, to their credit, the main character declares it to be murder), and even then, I have to acknowledge that this was 1952 and very much a product of its time--back then, asexuality was considered just as abnormal as all other queer identities. As someone who indulges in a lot of old media, I'm well aware that old media reflects the ideologies of their time, warts and all, but dang, it's never easy when it's one of your groups being slammed, and that someone you admire was part of it. :/
If anything, though, this does illustrate how all queer identities were viewed in a negative light back then, and why we must avoid any and all queer infighting now, because you can bet that those who hate us will take advantage of it.
