Welcome to my new (old) series called Overcomplicating the Pyrrhain Tribes (part 1 of 7!)

I have many more Overcomplicated designs to come (and I eventually want to move on to full bodies and action doodles!)

I started it sometime in January or Febuary, as I was applying to a digital creature program, when I was inspired to try and use real animal anatomy on the canon WoF tribes.

Do they need it? No!! Tui and Joy Ang have some of the coolest dragon designs and they don't need to be changed. I was simply inspired to practice anatomy and wanted to see what I could come up with. Plus, I've always drawn the dragons in Ang's style and wanted to see what I could come up with on my own.

Now, why are there two SkyWings and why do they not look the same? Because the second one, the one with the yellow horns, is actually the first one I drew. I didn't know what style I would be using and it was not well thought out. The first, the really pretty shiny one, is actually the seventh one I drew, when I had a clear idea.

This SkyWing is inspired by birds of prey (eagles specifically) found in the deadly eye and sharp beak. It isn't a real bird beak but I found that I really like the shape and style of an avian beak on reptiles, and the SkyWing had it originally. It looks better than the first version anyway. It's also got some vague monitor lizard and komodo dragon aspects in it, with the face scales (and especially around the eyes), but my favourite bit is the horns. I didn't document what species I used but I want to say it was a mountain goat (for obvious reasons). One neat feature about the horns is that each segment represents one year on top of the seven from the original horn. So seven years plus six segments means this particular SkyWing is thirteen years old. Just a silly headcanon on top of this headcanon design. Finally, the neck scales look less like fish scales and more like snake scales (using a snake for reference). I always loved those and wanted MORE of them. Plus it fits with their underbelly.

(posting this doodle instead of the actual doodle page from back in January because pretty much none of it reflects the idea I have for the au now. Or I'd need to basically completely redraw some things, like this doodle.)

The first night that Sonic turned into the Hedgefox with his new companion around went smoother than either expected. Tails managed to not flip a lid at the sight of his little friend suddenly becoming so much taller (and fluffier) than him.

To Sonic's surprise, Tails wasn't nearly as scared to touch him when he's in this form. Maybe it's because he's so much taller now. When they were watching a movie, near the end of it Tails crawled over and fell asleep right on top of him.

Maybe it's because it's late and 3 year old brain was telling him the fluffy pillow would be a good resting place, but Sonic was alright with it, a little unnerving at first, he's not used to something on his soft underbelly, but he decided against moving because the kid finally got some rest. (also don't tell anyone, but for some reason he found the weight on top of him grounding, even if the kit is worryingly light still.)

“Jungkook!” His mother’s voice greets him after he waits for her to answer his phone call. 

“Hi, mom. How are you?” He asks as he sits on his desk chair, eyeing the quiz he had taken with Jimin just thirty minutes before. Jungkook tapped his pen as he reviewed the answers he got wrong and wondered if he was in over his head. 

Would this plan even work? 

“Good, your father is making dinner tonight, and Seojun made dessert. You just missed him,” his mom informs him. Jungkook chuckles. He texted his brother almost every day, so he was up to date on all things concerning his brother. 

“That’s great,” Jungkook smiles and he is genuine with his words. He ignores the bubbling guilt in his stomach as the tapping of his pen grows more frantic and he starts bouncing his knee. He was grateful his mother wasn’t in front of him to notice. 

Aera doesn’t notice his silence as she rattles on about everything he’s missed since Thanksgiving. The Christmas parade was just this past weekend and she’s hopeful Jungkook will eventually be able to join the family when he graduates. 

Jungkook loved the parade. The floats were always magical, and his parents would help out whenever possible. Even his grandmother had been a participant for decades before his parents ever joined in. Jungkook has several photographs of himself and Seojun aboard a float every year until his Senior year of high school. 

After the parade, the town has a festival with food vendors, rides, and musical performances. If finals weren’t around the same time, he’d make the two-hour drive home every year but he needs to focus on his studies for now. 

“Jungkook?” His mother’s voice brings him out of his thoughts. 

“Hm?” He hums in response.

“Is your partner coming for Christmas?” Aera asks a second time. 

“Uh, my girlfriend? Yeah, totally. Yes, they are,” Jungkook clears his throat. 

“Wonderful! We’ll get Seojun’s old room ready for you and she can sleep in yours. Is that okay?” 

“Yeah,” Jungkook sighs in relief. “That’ll be perfect.”

“I know you probably sleep together,” Aera laughs. “But we’d prefer it this way.”

“No, I understand,” Jungkook affirms. “Whatever you guys want.”

“Make sure you’re using condoms, Jungkook,” Aera states as she takes a seat at the kitchen table. “I’m too young to be a grandmother.”

“Mom!” Jungkook exclaims, his cheeks already turning pink from embarrassment. 

“I’m just saying,” Aera laughs again. “I remember those college years with your father.”

“Mom!” 

“Tell me about your girlfriend, Kook. What does she like? Do you think she’d like a pair of pajamas? Is she allergic to anything?” 

Jungkook answers all his mother’s questions as best as he can. She takes notes as she listens attentively. Seojun had shown him a few pictures when he arrived, not wanting to go through every post his little brother made on his Instagram when he was only stopping by to drop off dessert. 

“She seems like such a lovely girl from what I’ve seen. I can’t wait to meet her, son,” Aera smiles as she looks over the notes in her little notebook. She has a habit of doodling on the corners of her page while she talks on the phone, and Jungkook seems to do the same thing.

“Yeah, she’s great,” Jungkook said as he chewed his bottom lip nervously. “I think you’ll like her.”

“We can’t wait to meet her! Oh, your father and I are so excited! Do you love her?” his mother asks, and Jungkook ignores the flutters of his heart.

Sheepishly, Jungkook smiles to himself as he taps the pen on his desk a little slower. I think I’m falling for her, is what he’d like to say but it’s just a ploy. Nothing will come of this once they return to campus, so why get his mother’s hopes up?

“It’s still too early to tell, Mom,” he lies as he turns in his chair, chewing on the end of his pen. “But she’s wonderful.”

Aera hums in acknowledgment. “As long as you’re happy, honey. We can’t wait to see you.”

“I’ll call you soon, Mom. Bye. Love you.”

“Love you, Kook. Bye,” his mother hangs up first like always, and Jungkook hits ‘end call’ on his phone. He sets it down on the desk as he spins around to set the pen on it as well. His elbows rest on the mahogany surface, his hands covering his face as he lets out a somewhat muffled scream.

“I’m so fucked,” he grumbles into the palms of his hands.

My betta fish, Achilles, passed this morning.

I haven't talked about my fish here much, aside from the occasional shitpost or silly doodle, but they've done a lot for me, especially Achilles.

See, Achilles was the very first fish I bought. I got him back in January of 2023, and as of today I'd had him for almost two years. I know that might not seem like much, but Achilles was a petstore betta— their lives tend to be short due to shitty breeding and terrible keeping in corporate locations. I knew going in that, as hardy as betta can be, there was a chance I'd fuck things up and lose him if I wasn't careful.

I've had a lot of experience losing pets. Like a lot of kids who get into exotic animal keeping, I started with lizards I caught in my backyard as a child and worked my way upwards through various "beginner" pets that I usually took in from family after their care became too burdensome for them. I loved those animals, but I'm not going to lie and say that I didn't fail them more often then not. I had mental health issues and school and grew negligent with cleaning tanks. After I lost my leopard gecko Lillian back in 2020, I decided I wasn't going to keep anything until I had the mental capacity to care for it properly. I didn't have the time to anyway; I was going to college and couldn't exactly keep a pet in the dorms.

I tried other things in the meantime. Threw myself into art even more, got into dnd, tried (and failed) at making terrariums with moss. I got better mentally, then had to live at home after freshman year of college and got worse.

Eventually, I realized I was getting a lot worse, and that I needed something to focus on to drag me out of it. I needed something I could care for, but that I could set up in a way that it would be able to sustain itself if I fell off mentally again. I started getting into terrariums once more, then isopods. I came across Serpadesign on YouTube, fell in love with the notion of building vivariums. And through that, I discovered a newfound desire to keep fish.

I do not want to prop up stereotypes: fish are not "easy" pets, no matter what petstores tell you. I did not go into fishkeeping because I wanted to put an animal in a bowl. I got into fishkeeping because I saw that it was possible to create a self sustaining ecosystem at an accessible size if I was willing put in the proper work. And god, I was willing to put in the work. I spent months scouring the aquascaping community on YouTube for tutorials and process videos, did research into the best types of fish for small tanks and the most ethical ways to keep them. I had spare tanks from my old reptile keeping days that I could easily repurpose for fishkeeping, and I spent every spare penny from Christmas and birthdays on buying up hardscape and natural decor.

And one day, while browsing my local petsmart, I saw Achilles.

I loved him the second I saw him, the moment I picked up his little cup and was greeted with the most indignant stare. He flared at me, which I'd never seen a betta do in a cup before. I was enamored, decided that I had to take him home.

I bought him on impulse, which wasn't the smartest thing to do. I didn't have a tank set up yet. I just knew I had the supplies and that I could make an early setup safer by dosing beneficial bacteria to jumpstart the nitrogen cycle. My first tank wasn't as naturalistic as I'd hoped, but it was functional, and I knew I could add more plants as time went on and Achilles settled.

Like I said, it's been almost two years. I've gone from keeping an underwhelming five gallon with gravel to several fully furnished naturalistic tanks with riparium plants for additional biological filtration. I still make mistakes now and then, since fishkeeping is a continuous learning process, but I've been able to provide my fish a home that sustains them naturally, and I have aspirations to build more tanks when finances and time allow.

None of this would've happened without Achilles. I would never have had the courage to do this if I hadn't fallen in love with the silly betta I found that day in 2023. He's been a constant friend, a source of joy, and a reason for me to keep going.

I'm going to miss him very, very much. But I can take heart in the fact that he brought me into a hobby I loved. Sparked a passion that will stay with me for life. Feel proud of the fact that I gave him an enjoyable life for the time in which he shared my home.

Achilles inspired one of my favorite creative writing pieces I did last year, so I'll share that here in his honor. It's called Betta Splendens, it's about fish, petstores, and the existential dread of living in late-stage capitalism as a disabled person.

POKÉMON FNAF AU???? Yes hello I’m the target audience

I am also the target audience! It is why I made it 🤭 I literally haven’t stopped thinking about it since January so it looks like it’s an au that’s definitely sticking!

And since I’m feeling generous I’ll share a doodle I have yet to post here. It features Cassie and Gregory! I’m going to be drawing full trainer reference poses for the two of them soon plus small sketches or other characters since now it’s time to move on from the gym leaders. I’m also going to be featuring a super old OC that I’ve sorta just inserted to almost all of my interests in some way into this au. Her name is Jayden and she’ll be the professor so look out!
