Tens of thousands of women in West Bengal state marched through the streets on Wednesday night in protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata last week.

The Reclaim the Night march was the culmination of nearly a week of frenzied protests ignited by the brutal killing of the 31-year-old at the RG Kar Medical College last Friday.

After a gruelling 36-hour shift, she had fallen asleep in a seminar room due to the lack of a designated rest area.

The next morning, her colleagues discovered her half-naked body on the podium, bearing extensive injuries. A hospital volunteer worker has been arrested in connection with the crime.

Responding to calls on social media, women from all walks of life marched across Kolkata city and throughout the state on a rainy Wednesday night.

Though protests were largely peaceful, they were marred by clashes between the police and a small group of unidentified men who barged into the RG Kar Hospital, the site of the doctor’s murder, and ransacked the emergency department.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the unruly crowd. Some police vehicles were also damaged.

Smaller protests were also held in many other Indian cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.

In Kolkata, women marched resolutely, holding placards of protest, their faces illuminated by the glow of mobile phones, candlelight and flaming torches. Some carried India's flags. They were joined by men, both young and elderly.

During the marches and at many gatherings near a university, theatre hall and bus terminus, they stood united, holding hands as the humid air echoed with loud and powerful chants of “we want justice”. Protesters blew conch shells - the sound is considered auspicious.

At the stroke of midnight, as India completed 77 years of Independence, the soundscape of protest changed.

The air filled with a spontaneous chorus of the national anthem. Then it began raining, but the protesters walked in the rain, or holding umbrellas over their head.

“We have never seen anything like before in the city, such a huge gathering of women marching at night,” a reporter belonging to a news network said.

It was a night of barely concealed rage and frustration.

A woman, who joined the march well after midnight with her 13-year-old daughter said: “Let her see whether a mass protest can set things right. Let her become aware of her rights”.

“Women have no respect!” said another. “Our worth is less than cows and goats."

"When do we get our independence? How long do we have to wait to work without fear? Another 50 years?” asked a student.

Sanchari Mukherjee said she marched with thousands of others from a bus terminus in Jadavpur, undeterred by the rain.

She met "people of all ages, from all classes, the well-to-do, the middle class and the poor".

"I saw an elderly couple, the husband helping the woman to walk,” she said.

"One family brought their little girl along, perhaps so the memory of this event would be etched in her mind - how her parents stood up against injustice, and how she, too, can protest one day."

Ms Mukherjee said the entire city seemed awake as the marchers passed by illuminated homes, with people peering out of windows and crowding verandahs to watch.

“They may not have participated but they were with us in spirit," she said.

"'We want justice' had become the anthem of the march, and it didn’t feel like just a slogan," Ms Mukherjee said.

"It felt like every young woman was deeply hurt and determined, frustrated that they still face these issues in 2024."

Ms Mukherjee added that she had to walk a few miles to join the march because the streets were gridlocked late at night.

"I was instantly swept up in a sea of people heading to the protest site. There was no excitement, just a stoic determination to create an event which would become a symbol for the times to come."

The protests have been fuelled by anger over local authorities’ handling of the young trainee doctor's rape and murder.

Police later arrested a hospital volunteer worker in connection with what they said was a case of rape and murder.

But there have been accusations of cover-up and negligence. The case has since been transferred from local police to the federal Central Bureau of Investigation.

Despite scant resources, Kolkata’s Reclaim the Night march appeared to have been meticulously organised. In an advisory, organisers welcomed women and people from marginalised sexual and gender identities to the march.

“Men are welcome as allies and observers,” the advisory added.

They also emphasised that politicians were not welcome and requested that no party flags be brought to the protest.

It was not the first time that a Reclaim the Night march has been staged in India.

Inspired by similar marches elsewhere in the world by women to assert their rights to walk in public areas without fear, a march was held in 1978 in Bombay (now Mumbai) in protest against the rape of a woman on the street.

Blank Noise, a community-based art project and activist collective, has organised several midnight walks in Delhi to encourage women to assert their right to walk freely at night.

But in terms of scale, the Kolkata march, echoed by smaller ones across other cities, stands as the largest yet.

"We seized the night. We've never seen anything like this in the city. This is unprecedented. I hope it wakes up the authorities," said Chaitali Sen, a protester.

Mucad's brother, Abdi Ibrahim, has said no-one had seen him since the shooting. He was at the Al Noor mosque with his family.

Abdullahi Dirie, 4

Abdulrahman Hashi, 60, a preacher at Dar Al Hijrah Mosque in Minneapolis, told The Washington Post his 4-year-old nephew was among those killed.

He received a phone call Friday morning from his brother-in-law Adan Ibrahin Dirie, who was also in the hospital with gunshot wounds. Four of his children escaped unharmed, but the youngest, Abdullahi, was killed.

Sayyad Milne, 14

Sayyad's father has spoken through tears of his "brave little soldier", who died at the Al Noor Mosque.

The Year 10 Cashmere High School was at the mosque with his mother and friends. He attends every Friday.

His father John Milne told NZME through tears: "I've lost my little boy, he's just turned 14. I'll get it together again.

"I haven't heard officially yet that he's actually passed but I know he has because he was seen.

Khaled Mustafa and son Hamza, 16

He fled from ISIS and war-torn Syria, with his family, to pursue a new life in New Zealand. The Syrian refugees reportedly only arrived in New Zealand only a few months ago. Khaled died at the Al Noor Mosque while his son Hamza is missing. Another son, Zaid, 13 is in Christchurch Hospital where he underwent a six-hour operation last night

A national futsal player is among the dead. Born in Kuwait, Elayyan, a goalkeeper, recently became a father and was a popular member of the Christchurch tech industry. He was a director and shareholder of a company called LWA Solutions. 

Husne Ara Parvin, 42

Parvin was shot when she tried to save her wheelchair-bound husband Farid Uddin, according to a relative. She went to the women’s section after leaving her paralyzed husband in the men’s section on the wheelchair, She went out when she heard gunshots, and died trying to save her husband.

A Facebook appeal was issued for Hamid.

"A friend of one struggle... has passed away in New Zealand... the victim of NZ animal terrorist,' a relative wrote on Facebook.

Haji-Daoud Nabi, 71

Nabi ran the Afghan Association and was inside the Al Noor Mosque at the time of the shooting.

The 71-year-old was a refugee from Afghanistan and is thought to have died inside.

Haroon Mahmood, 40

Haroon left Pakistan to pursue an education at Lincoln University in Christchurch. Dr Haroon Mahmood leaves a wife and two children aged 13 and 11.

Amjad Hamid, 57

The heart doctor moved to New Zealand from Palestine 23 years ago because he wanted a better future. He is believed to be dead.

Mohammad Atta Alayan

He built the Christchurch Mosque. A Palestinian refugee, he raised the funds to create a community space for New Zealand’s Muslims Here he is, smiling with his son. 

Farhaj Ahsan, 30

Ashan, 30, left the Christchurch home he shares with wife Insha Aziz, his 3-year-old daughter and 7-month-old son on Friday morning for prayer.

"I do not know where my son is," his father Mohammad Sayeeduddin told the Herald from his home in Hyderabad, India.

"I have been in contact with his wife Insha in New Zealand since it happened and we don't know anything.”

Syed Jahandad Ali, 34

Ali's wife Amna Ali, currently in Pakistan, last spoke to her husband on Friday morning while having breakfast.

One of his colleagues told her they left work at 1pm on Friday to head to the Al Noor Mosque

Osama Adnan, 37

Adnan is of Egyptian origin and among the missing.

His colleague tweeted an appeal and said he hoped Osama would "show up soon" and make a "full recovery".

Hussain Al-Umari, 36

Al-Umari's parents Janna Ezat and Hazim Al-Umari have said they last spoke to their son on Thursday night. They fear he is among the dead at the Al Noor mosque where he regularly attends Friday prayers.

The family immigrated to New Zealand from the United Arab Emirates in 1997.

Hazim Al-Umari told Newshub he did not attend the mosque and he advised his son not to go "because it's not safe".

Mojammel Hoq, 30

Hoq, from Bangladesh, is among the missing, a friend told the Herald.

He has been in Christchurch for over two years studying dentistry.

Mohammad Imran Kahn, 47

Kahn is thought to have died at the Linwood Mosque.

A friend said he owned two restaurants in Christchurch, including the Indian Grill.

Ali Elmadani, 66

Elmadani was born in Palestine.

His wife, Nuha Assad, has not heard from him since he went to the Al Noor mosque to pray.

Vora Ramiz, 28

Ramiz is among the missing.

Ansi Karippakulam Alibava, 25

Alibava, a 25-year-old woman originally from India, is among the missing.

Linda Armstrong, 65

A friend told the Herald that Armstrong died in the arms of a lady who was shot in the arm and survived at Linwood Mosque.

The friend said Armstrong always took people into her home and was kind.

"She was like a child about everything. She was so happy. She was always excited to do a good deed. She was happy to do it."

It wasn’t his fault that Raksha fit perfectly against his side.

The sun was shining, the weather was lovely, and Rama didn’t have any plans to be at the hospital or joining the cleanup efforts today. The only thing on his to do list was to spend time with Raksha and their daughter. It’d been too long since he got to feel this happy.

Since he got to feel like a husband and father. 

Swynlake, however, was full of surprises. And none, not even a town-wide dream, would throw him more than this one.

Ritu Bhediya was eleven when her nineteen year old brother Rama disappeared. Their older brother believed he was dead. He was probably right. But Ritu and the sister and brother between her and Rama...held out hope. Their father died never knowing what became of his son. Their mother was destroyed by his disappearance, and sometimes, Ritu hated Rama for it.

That was why she wanted him to be alive so badly. You can’t hate a dead man.

It was convenient for her if Rama were alive, see.

She remembered the last time she saw him. He promised to bring her a pretty sari when he returned home for his next uni break, kissed the top of her head, ruffled her hair, and turned to board the train from Hyderabad to Delhi. She didn’t watch his back until he disappeared into the crowd.

But she should have.

It would be the last time she would ever see her big brother, her superhero, her idol. Until, while living in London in 2018 with her husband, a dinner party for his work resulted in a Google search that brought a picture of her aged by eighteen years, smiling, very much not dead older brother to her attention.

Swynlake, a town full of magical disasters, hometown of her husband’s colleague. His tale of what his family back home had just gone through piqued her interest in the town. So she did what any millennial would do and turned to Google.

There, the town’s online articles of their local paper popped up. And the picture for an article about repairing damages to the hospital? Included several nurses in uniform - a tall man sticking out among the women - hard at work cleaning up damage to the lobby.

Rama Bhediya, it said. Clearly. She looked up at the man’s face again and had to throw her laptop to the side so she could run to the loo and vomit. She’d recognize her big brother anywhere, even if it had been eighteen years. Even if he’d been out of her life almost twice as long as he’d been in it.

That face. Paired with that name. There was no way it was anybody but him.

That picture was what led Ritu to the main street through town, headed for the hospital to confront him at work, really embarrass the shit out of the bastard - oh, but God was on her side today.

She didn’t have to ask for directions after all. She didn’t believe it at first, but! There he was. Theeeeeere he was. And Ritu advanced toward him and whoever that chick with him was - did she know what a jackass he was? letting his baby sister mourn him her whole life when he was just fine and living in the UK? - and didn’t even hesitate for a second when she balled up her fist, pulled it back, and hit him in the face with a right hook.

“You rat bastard! You deserve so much more! So much more,” she screamed at him, in English. Who knows how long he’s lived in England. Did her speak Telugu anymore? Malayalam? Did he speak English with a Kiwi accent still like Manaal and Laranya, or did he speak a more Indian-accented English like her, or an American-esque one like Salil?

After the pain from the punch wore off, she’d know. Perhaps he’d be proud.

Years ago, Rama’d taught her how to throw that punch. You’re a young woman in a big city, my little star. You have to be as tough as your are pretty. Oh, there’s the nausea again. 

The rage slowly simmered to uncloud her vision, and when it did? She almost delighted in the blood on his cheek from the cut her engagement ring made.

“Hmph. Miss me, Batman?”

As she advanced on him, he thought he was seeing things. If he didn’t know any better, he’d think that was a grown-up version of his baby sister, Ritu. It was impossible, it was -

- but then, she punched him. Hard. And called him BAtman, the superhero she used to compare him to, and. There was one thing Rama knew for sure. Two things. First, that this was Ritu standing before him. And second, that his wife was two point five seconds away from going to jail.

He didn’t have time to assess the damage, he grabbed Raksha before she could tear the woman’s - his sister’s, holy god, his sister, how did she...? - throat out.

“Raksha! Hey, it’s okay. It’s okay. I deserved that, deserved...” he kept a tight hold of her and looked into Ritu’s eyes, a thousand apologies in his but his tongue could form none of them. “I deserved that, I did.”

HYDERABAD: On June 26 way back in 1999 at Milton Keynes in England, a 16-year-old Mithali Raj opened the innings for India and became the youngest player to score an ODI century on debut. It has been an innings which has seen no closure in the last 21 years as the Hyderabad player has gone on to establish one record after the other. Excerpts of a chat with the Indian women’s ODI captain. 21 and going strong This one year has almost gone. The ride has been quite adventurous because I have seen so many changes in women’s cricket – both global as well as domestic. I am one of those players who played from the era of WCAI to BCCI, from IWCC to ICC, from empty stadiums to full packed ones, from county grounds to international stadiums. I have seen everything that women’s cricket has come to be today. My own personal journey too has been parallel to the transition of women’s cricket. I began my journey as a captain when I was just 21-22 and leading the Indian side for so many years has helped me also grow as a person. My growth as a person pretty much has happened on the ground along with teammates. From making my international debut as a 16-year-old to now 37, it has been a good 21 years of my prime life spent not at home but at the ground – different countries, hotels, grounds, coaches, travel etc. It’s been a very privileged journey. Of course there have been some lows, which is very natural. Again these are the things that actually helped me grow – bad decisions, a low phase as a batter or a series of losses as a captain – and develop a different perspective and to understand things better. My growth, in terms of mental capacity, increased by going through those phases. I can only say that I am quite lucky to be seen with different eras, generations. When I made my debut I had a lot of seniors in the side, then players of my own age group, then juniors and now am rubbing shoulders with teenagers. It’s actually the fourth generation of players and a rarity for a player to achieve it. Sachin (Tendulkar), of course, has gone through it. I can only say that I am privileged and lucky.

Mithali Raj (Getty Images) Debut game It’s way too far back. Honestly, I don’t remember much of that game. I do have some pictures and go through those sometimes. It just reminds me of how nervous I was on that day – about representing the country and the burden of expectations. Also those days there wasn’t the culture of handing over a cap etc. It was just everyone got into a bunch and entered the field and that’s it. Now, I get to give the cap to debutants and it’s great to see the happiness on the face of the youngsters. But for me, there was no such thing as I actually didn’t understand much at that time. It was more of pressure on a kid who was among many senior players. I was much in awe of the weightage of expectations. High point I cannot actually pinpoint one high point as everything has led to a different high point. Say like the world record led to me leading India to the runners-up spot in the 2005 World Cup final and that led to doing well in the Test matches and in 2014 too we did well. Every milestone gave me more confidence and also for the team that they could push a little higher. Each time we had a good match, we knew we could do better. However, what started the stone rolling was the 2005 World Cup and it was important in terms of changing the players’ mindset. Until then we just were participants in the events and nowhere near the big teams. But once we did well in that tournament, we knew we could beat anyone and that was inculcated in the youngsters. Not many know that we played the qualifiers in the 2017 World Cup and coming from there to be No.2 was a huge step and that happened because of the winning streak we had. We were literally on par with Australia – in terms of winning streak – in that year. These things do matter when it comes to the psychological preparations of a player and the team. Low point Many people will think of controversies but for me that was not in my hand. That was something which happened and I just went through the whole thing. As a cricketer and captain, the lowest has the 2013 World Cup as it happened in India. Being the host team, we couldn’t qualify for the Super Six and it was a big platform to do well and showcase women’s cricket. At that point of time, I thought that was the ideal platform for the sport to take wings. I felt that I lost a chance there to take the game to a different level.

In India, these seniors are looking for love, living-in and risking ridicule

Kulkarni had an active social life but, after several years of being single, the 68-year-old divorcee felt she needed someone at home.

“As evening fell, I’d get worried about my health and being alone at home and my safety,” said the former insurance agent.

So, she joined Happy Seniors dating agency and began meeting Yardi, also 68, for nights out to the theater and cinema. Ten months later, they’re living together.

Kulkarni and Yardi’s romance might not seem odd in many countries, but in India late-life relationships are generally frowned upon by a society that places a high value on marriage and disapproves of cohabitation outside wedlock.

While there is no particular law regarding the status of live-in relationships in India, in 2015 India’s Supreme Court ruled that living together out of wedlock was an acceptable custom in Indian society.

But the social stigma remains and, in some cases, is perpetuated by adult children who fear their parents will be ostracized by their communities, and worry over complicating inheritance issues.

And while seniors dating agencies are making matches, some say it’s still difficult to sign people up, especially women — even when they’re offered financial incentives.

A partner for life

This generation of elderly Indians grew up in a time when marriage was for life. Many married young to partners chosen by their parents and were expected to fulfill the duties of a traditional wife and husband — she managed the family, he earned the money.

In traditional Indian society, older people have always occupied a position of reverence. They, in turn, are expected to lead a life that’s centered around spirituality and family — often helping to care for grandchildren, for example. Dating or finding a partner in later life, after a spouse has passed away, isn’t the cultural norm.

But times are changing. Adult children in urban India no longer automatically invite their parents to live with them, leaving many without a support network they may have expected when they were younger.

There is no shortage of older, single Indians. According to the 2011 Census data, almost 15 million elderly Indians live alone and three-quarters of them are women. There are signs that some are interested in recoupling.

In 2012, Madhav Damle, an-ex publisher in the Indian city of Pune, Maharashtra, conducted a survey of 400 senior citizens in that city about their attitudes towards finding a companion. More than 70% of respondents thought live-in relationships were an ideal solution for lonely senior citizens looking for companionship.

Saroj Ghatani, a 52-year-old widow from Pune, has been seeking a partner to live with for the past year. Her children don’t like the idea, but she’s prepared to go against their wishes.

“They feel at 50 I have lived my life and shouldn’t really think of finding a partner,” she said, adding that her children worry she may not be available to help raise her grandchildren if she finds a new partner.

“All my life I have worked to raise them and support them and the family. Now I want to think only about myself and live the life I want to,” she says.

Someone in the kitchen

Men and women typically want different things from live-in relationships, according to Natubhai Patel, 71. He started his non-profit dating service, Anubandh Foundation, after the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat. Around 25,000 people were killed in the quake and many survivors were left without a spouse.

Patel says while many older Indian women want companionship, many potential male partners are looking for someone to manage the kitchen.

Savita Desai, 69 is happy to do that. She makes lunch every day for her live-in companion Hiten Parekh, 70, to take when he goes to work in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Those aren’t their real names. The couple requested to use aliases to avoid any “social embarrassment.” They say they’re happy for their friends to assume they’re married.

Parekh has a wheat allergy and says, in the past eight years, Desai has taken care of him like his “own mother.”

Parekh and Desai initially faced opposition from his sons, who live in the same city. “Gradually, they realized I needed someone to take care of me and came around, as did hers,” he said.

Desai’s children live in the US and she said life with Parekh is comfortable and easy. “You need a support structure in your old age and I have it now. I don’t mind taking care of him in return,” she said.

Some women reluctant to sign up

Some women say their days of running a household are over and believe that India needs to move on from its traditional, patriarchal system.

Jayashri M has thought about looking for a partner through organizations in her home town Bangalore, in southern India, but the 62-year-old, who has never married, says the “expectations involved” stopped her from signing up.

“Companionship is much needed, but I’m afraid many older men were so used to being taken care of by their now deceased wives that they are looking for someone to run their house and take care of them in old age. That’s not my idea of having a companion. I don’t want additional responsibility,” said the former schoolteacher.

Patel and Damle agreed it’s harder to attract women to their dating services. They offer discounts and other incentives, but Patel said there are still far fewer women on his books than men.

“I have the details of 12,000 men over 55 across India from the get-togethers we have held so far. Unfortunately, I have the details of only 1,000 women,” he said. It’s still culturally taboo to look for a partner at an older age, especially in more conservative smaller cities of India, he added.

As an extra incentive to women, Patel’s foundation invites men who enter a new live-in relationship to put money into their partner’s account each month or to invest in an apartment in the woman’s name, so that she has financial security in case of a break-up.

“I do this as most women who come forward for companionship are more vulnerable than men,” he said.

Women in traditional Indian households often depend on men to take care of their finances, including handing over any money they make to their husband. Family funds are often controlled by the eldest son after the father’s death and many older women in middle-class families may have no savings in their names if they’ve never worked.

Damle, from Happy Seniors, said he doesn’t believe in offering financial benefits to women signing up to this agency, because “we want companionship to be the main reason women say yes, not money.”

But he does make it easier for them to join. While men have to pay Rs 5000 ($65) to join, women can do so for free. “Because it is a massive step for many older women to even think of approaching the organization,” he explained.

Relationship counselor Hema Yadav-Kadam thinks that many senior citizens and their children are confused about what constitutes a live-in relationship.

“Many older people would like to get into it but hesitate because of society looking at living together as something immoral,” said Yadav-Kadam, who works with Damle to speak with children who oppose their parent’s decision.

“Fear of losing out on their inheritance, having a new contender in their parent’s will and the inability to deal with the social disapproval — that is inevitable and common — is what makes most children oppose (a new relationship),” said Yadav-Kadam.

Right to inherit property

Damle believes a live-in arrangement is ideal for older couples as it gives them a sense of independence within the relationship and avoids the paperwork and legal complexities of marriage.

Often people receive retirement pensions in their deceased spouse’s name or are entitled to a share in the property their husband owned. The right to those assets may end when a woman remarries, making it preferable to live with a new partner rather than getting wed.

Before ruling on the social aspect of living together in 2015, India’s Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that that living together was similar to marriage and that women had the right to inherit their partner’s property.

Before they begin dating or living together, Damle invites potential couples to sign an agreement spelling out everything from cooking responsibilities to joint finances. They draw up a will and even note down their expectations about sexual relations.

NM Rajeswari, 72, of Hyderabad in Southern India, and B Damodar Rao, 74, met eight years ago when Rao, a widower, registered with Thodu Needa, a non-profit Rajeswari runs to find companions for older adults.

They didn’t tie the knot. Instead, they exchanged garlands in front of their supportive children — an important step in a Hindu wedding ceremony. For many couples planning to live together, it symbolizes not just social validation, but is an acknowledgment of their partnership.

“Our society needs to understand and accept the need for emotional and even physical support at any age. This stigma (of late life companionship) has been running in the society for so long but with time it will hopefully change,” Rajeswari said.

Rajeswari’s daughter, Radhika Lakshmi, said social disapproval didn’t cross her or her siblings’ minds when her mother started looking for a new companion.

“We didn’t want to restrict her life or happiness because of what society thinks. Why should anybody have that right?” she asked.

Meena Lambe, 61, married her live-in partner, Arun Deo, 72, because his children were keen for their relationship to get the social stamp of approval. She would have been happy to remain as live-in partners, she said.

“My advice to all those who wish to find a companion later in life would be first to weigh the pros and cons and preferably be in a live-in relationship rather than marry, as one’s habits are less alterable by this age.”

When Kulkarni and Yardi decided to move in together, it wasn’t without opposition, but they did it anyway.

Yardi’s daughter initially wasn’t in favor of their decision, though she visits the couple regularly now. She changed her mind after several interactions with Kulkarni. “She was assured I would take care of her father,” Kulkarni said.

They are often asked by neighbors and friends if they wish to marry but the couple say they have no such plans.

“We are happy and want to keep things as they are,” Kulkarni said.
