A quick and dirty rundown of Indigenous Women in Elfquest(some people were left off the list. Barry Blair doesn't count.) in
Honestly, this whole thing with WaRP killing off that girl is pissing me off so much.
Like, to date:
1. First appearance of an Indigenous woman in Elfquest, a woman shrieking out her grief over her spouse’s death. She appears for one panel, not counting her huddled form next to her husband’s corpse, and is portrayed as tearing her hair and dramatically sobbing.
Lest you think this is genuine grief over her husband being killed violently in front of her eyes, I just want to advise you that the novel tells us she’s playing it up, because without her “man” to provide for them, she and her children will have to rely on their community.
I mean, it’s not like humans are social animals that care for one another and have empathy for loss! No, without histrionics, they will surely die.
2. Nonna. You guys have no idea how much I loathe Nonna’s entire concept, and, by extension, the Hoan G'Tay Sho(as a concept. They play right into that racist old myth about Native Americans thinking the early white raiders were gods, which, btw, never happened. I think it was meant to be a subversion, but really.).
Nonna worships the elves, to the extent that in comparing herself to them, she calls herself an ugly toad. Even in later issues, when confronted with the truth, that elves are just lying liars who lie, she still openly adores them and doesn’t waste too much time getting angry at them. Why would she? They were just scawed, that’s why they created a cult of worship and human sacrifice around themselves.
3. The women in Olbar’s village.
TBH, not actually characters, but they were a diverse group, most of them pretty cool and beautiful.
4. The Bone Woman.
I used this woman as a minor character in my own fic, and actually forgot she’d never been given a name, or characterization beyond “scheming shaman”.
The Bone Woman plays up to primitive priestess and witch doctor tropes. A soothsayer who reads bones(how cool is that?), and manipulates Olbar the Mountain-tall by playing on his superstitions about spirits(not actually superstitious, tho, because he dealt with preservers), and who later manipulates his brother into trying to steal Skywise’s chunk of meteorite(the only thing Skywise cares about more than himself). She could have been a really cool character, if WaRP hadn’t relied so strongly on the racist tropes. She’s EVIL, a WITCH, and never heard from again.
3. Winnowill’s slaves.
They basically exist to be victimized, pitied, and rescued. The ideal Indigenous woman, as far as WaRP is concerned.
4. The Hill Hopper women.
Nunkah’s tribe included several women, mostly skinny and almost but not quite as tall as Shuna, who first exist to cower before her and say that they can’t hunt like the “spirit woman”, then to smirk meanly along with Nunkah when he cheats on Shuna. They do not actually require names or characterization, they don’t explore how their people might have different customs than Shuna’s, or different perceptions of love and marriage, they exist to cower in awe before the white girl, then to play “mean girl”.
5. Hartha. Shukopek’s wife. Exists to be perpetually birthing and pregnant, and to worship and adore Shen Shen.
6. Unnamed Indigenous girl, supposedly part of a resistance movement against the Djunslanders. Is murdered and raped. In that order. While proclaiming her allegiance and admiration to "great shaman Shuna". In broken English.
The fact that they decided to put play out that particular trope in 2017, when awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous women was at its highest, when 80 percent of sexual violence committed against in Indigenous women in the US is committed by white men, who got away with it because tribal authorities were unable to prosecute non-member who committed crimes on native land(I've only been able to find information on that from 2015 and nothing more recent. The law may have changed), is ignorance at its highest.
It's insensitive and offensive, and they should be ashamed of themselves, but then again, the first issue of Elfquest came out FIVE years after Sacheen Littlefeather and Marlon Brando's protest on how Indigenous characters were portrayed in popular media, so I'm pretty sure they just don't care.
