#olafur arnalds music is perfect for writing

as he's told he isn't intruding, harvey props his guitar up against the wall before leaning himself up against the piano, watching as the other man's fingers brush over the keys. "that's a good choice," he says, for he too has an appreciation for classical music even if his persona made it seem otherwise. "i've been listening to a lot of olafur arnalds lately, the way he blends piano with synths, creates this atmospheric ambience that makes you feel like you're floatin'. it's an interesting take on classical, how you can modernise it but still keep the core values." already, he feels more at home. being able to talk music to someone that understands, and in a way that nobody - even at his label - cared to do.
and if he wasn't already swooning, to hear those first few keys being played of his own song, harvey was practically melting against the piano. in awe he watches, gaze fixated on the movement of nevada's fingers gliding effortlessly across the keys, the sounds sending shivers down his spine because this song had never sounded more perfect. it takes a moment for him to compose himself enough to start softly singing along during the chorus, and even the way he sings is different to the record -- he's softer, the words so familiar yet it sounded so new all the same.
maybe this was what he had been missing all along; this was why he fell in love with music in the first place. as the song came to a close, harvey knows he needs more. "write with me," he says, and he's never been more serious. he reaches out to place a hand on nevada's shoulder, fingers softly stroking over his shirt, "the way you play, how you've composed this yourself, i could really use a beautiful brain like yours to help me fall back in love with writing again."
"I can play that too if you want me to," Nev shrugged, as he grinned up at him. He knew that it wasn't that hard to play the tambourine, the only thing he had to worry about was staying on beat. The lifeguard rubbed his hands over his knees, shaking his head. "You aren't intruding at all. I probably should get going anyway--" Harvey definitely wasn't intruding but now Nevada didn't want to be in the musician's way if he was trying to find muse to write. "Oh, thanks, and Ludovico Einuadi." He loved playing classical music and this composer was one of his favorite artists that were still living. "It's one of my favorite instruments to play. I feel like it breathes so much air into music," Nev smiled to himself as he gently brushed his fingers over the monotone keys. He only glanced back up at Harvey, eyes shining brightly. Part of him was beyond nervous, but he wanted the musician to be able to hear one of his songs played by a piano and Nev could do that. "Well--" he nervously cleared his throat, "If you don't mind," Nevada exhaled slowly, turning back to the piano as he straightened. "It's actually one of my favorites of yours," he exclaimed, peeking over at him before starting to play one of Harvey's songs.

my main genre of music for writing is either a) film scores, b) trailer music, or c) sad slow string pieces that feel like they're the epilogue to the whole world. so like:
this night is for you and me by danny norbury
near light by olafur arnalds (the Mari samuelsen arrangement, though the original - with the Foley work of creaking furniture and footsteps and windchimes in the back - has a very "in our bedroom after the war" energy that I love)
the mist parts 1-3 by Frans Bak
on the nature of daylight by max Richter
chorale (five) by peter gregson
Adagio for strings by Samuel barber
no matter what fandom i'm in, these songs make it onto every story playlist I do. that shit makes me yearn and gets me in the perfect fucking headspace to write emotional bullshit. might make a playlist for just these vibes, who knows

Hi there gorgeous! Music can be such a turn on! (and much, much more) What music do you like? Favorite bands? What is the last song you put on repeat? Did you listen to John Peel? Too many questions? Sorry bout that... But I have a the sneaking suspicion you have great taste... *dreaming of sitting on your bedroom floor listening to you playing your favorite tunes for hours.*
Okay...Firstly, sorry it's taken me like, six months to answer this one. Anyone who knows me knows how fucking seriously I take questions about music and how annoyingly obsessive I am. I don't really know where to begin, but I'll try.So I listen to a lot of old school East coast hip hop. Love that shit. Think Native Tongues vibes; Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latisha, Mos Def, etc etc...I listen to a LOT of digital, electronic, trip hop... Jon Hopkins, Four Tet, Mount Kimbie, Christian Löffler, Mount Kimbie, Maribou State, Bonobo, Moderate. Men behind computers. Four Tet is one of my favourites. Within that I listen to a lot of very ambient music (think John Beltran) and what I call Beeps and Clicks.I generally summarise my music taste as Beeps and Clicks. Good examples of this would be Evenings- Babe, Goodbye Forever, or Lately. Also Shlohmo- Asleep on the 22I listen to a LOT (i.e. Every morning from 5.30-8am whilst I drink coffee and do my admin, and late at night when I'm writing) of contemporary composers; Takahiro Kido, Sophie Hutchings, Peter Broderick, Dustin O'Halloran, Max Richter, Nils Frahm...Favourite ever is Olafur Arnalds. SO beautiful. I love his records Island Songs and And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness. The collaboration between Nils Frahm and Olafur is amazing... Trance Frendz. Try 20:17 🖤In terms of individual artists and favourites etc etc, that's always hard. The National will forever be close to my heart as they remind me of all my best friends, and many of my happiest memories have been soundtracked by then. Currently I'm obsessed with Nicole Dollenganger. Sad, and uncomfortably sexual- she's my dream girlfriend. Start with You're So Cool, Ugly and True Love Cafe. Terrapin by Bonobo reminds me of watching the sun come up at 6am on the last blistering hot day of summer with my ex girlfriend. We were naked and cuddling in a pile of Abandon clothes on her front porch. I can feel the sun when I hear it.Abandon Window and Immunity by Jon Hopkins are the two tracks will forever and more than any others get right up under my rib cage. I love the constant undertones of rolling thunder in the background to Hopkins tracks. In McDonalds by Burial is also up there. On repeat right now I have the Four Tet remix of Madvillain's Great Day. Hip hop and Four Tet: perfect! Also, the Cinematic Orchestra remix of Melanie De Basio's I'm Gonna Leave You. SO GOOD. There are a few others, but some are too intimate to share... I'm now tired, so hopefully that is enough. Enjoy.

I got tagged, yay :D
Tagged by @holistickitten, thank you sweetie
Rules: Answer the questions, and tag 20 blogs you want to know better
Nicknames: My name is Anna, so nobody really gives me nicknames. Expect my dad who calls me Olivia sometimes because I loved olives when I was a kid ;)
Star Sign: Capricorn
Height: 1,72 m
Time right now: 7:48 pm
Last thing you googled: Goodreads quotes about writing
Fave Music Artist: Oh, that’s a hard one. Let’s make it artists. Years and Years, Chvrches, Rhodes, Tom Odell, Walking on Cars, Birdy, Bastille, The Black Keys, Kodaline, Sleeping at Last, Olafur Arnalds and a lot more. I’m always listening to music.
Song stuck in my head: Kaleo- Way Down We Go. It is the perfect song for DGHDA, and if anyone could create a fanvid set to Dirk Gently and gang with this song I would be very grateful.
Last Movie I watched: Trespass Against Us 2016 with Michael Fassbender
Last TV show I watched: Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. If you haven’t watched it already, what is wrong with you?! Go better your life and watch!
What I’m wearing right now: My jean- jeggings (yes it’s a thing) and a baggy jumper with a chicken on it (don’t judge I got that jumper as a hand-me-down. And it’s very comfy). When did I create this blog: 2015
The kind of stuff I post: My TV Shows obsessions: The Walking Dead, Sherlock, some SPN, DGHDA, Halt and Catch Fire, BBC Class. And my favorite podcasts: The Black Tapes, Tanis, The Wooden Overcoats, King Falls AM. And shameless fanfiction advertisement
Do I do asks regularly: YES! I love to talk to people. Bombard me with asks, or message me.
Why did I choose my URL: Okay, this is kinda embarrassing. Everyone surely has this great story how they came up with their URL, but I can not remember why I gave my blog this name. And I’m not even a very optimistic person, so my URL isn’t even fitting, but now I’m going to stick with it because of name recognition.

Take 5: Black Lilys
Black Lilys are a French brother and sister duo Camille & Robin Faure who, inspired by the beauty and sheer power of human resilience, magically create a lush musical landscape in a sensitive, ethereal brew of ‘dark pop.’ They produce music that balances both strength and vulnerability, a smooth blend between Robin’s driving guitar melodies and Camille’s effortless husky, breathy vocals. Based in both Lyon and Edinburgh, the band release their first UK single ‘Yalakta’ on 3rd April 2020. We decided to probe Rob and Camille with a 'Take 5'... When did you realise that you wanted to be a music artist? What or who has inspired you? Rob: When we started playing together we were not thinking to do this as a permanent job. We have just lost our mother a few months before and music just became a way to escape, breathe and also communicate with each other. Later, it started to be something we could not stop doing. Our mother inspired us a lot, still does today. She was a musician too. I believe she made Black Lilys happen from wherever she is. Who, living or dead, would you dream of collaborating with? Rob: Olafur Arnalds. Before going on stage, we play his album "Island songs". It is wonderful. We would love to collaborate with him, his music is stunning. It is cold and warm in the same time. Oh, and we would love to go to Iceland at the same time. Tell us about your single ‘Yalakta' - what is the song about? Rob: Yälakta is a song of goodbye and at the same time, this song is about the invisible, magic that we forgot to see in our daily life. These tiny messages, signs that we decide to see or not. Roald Dahl said: " And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it " Tell us five things you love about the city you live in, and why…… (name the city or cities if more than one!) Rob: We live between France and Scotland at the moment. Our next songs were written in Edinburgh. We are not big fans of cities. But Edinburgh is perfect for many reasons: • People are really friendly and helpful with a great sense of humour. You can easily feel home. The hospitality of the locals feels natural. And when we say that we are french, they always try to say a few words in french. It is lovely. • There are so many good coffee shops. Our favourite is the Artisan Roast on Broughton Street. They make amazing hot chocolate with oat milk. Their playlists are always wonderful. We love to go there to write. • Arthur's Seat, this majestic hill in the middle of the city. The colours are changing throughout the year. Wow, we love it. Especially during the autumn which is also Camy's favourite season .• The Weepub ( tiniest pub of Scotland ) we've met so many lovely people at the open mics. • The charity shops and vintage shops like "W. Armstrong and Sons". Most of our clothes comes from here. We found a lot of beautiful things over there. What are you most looking forward to this year? Camille: A lot of things actually. We are playing at the Great Escape Festival in May. It will be our first UK gig with our drummer. Then the realise of the video clip of Yaläkta in April. It's the first video, we completely directed our self with my brother. We are really excited to show it to the world. We played a lot in France the last few months and in March we are doing an acoustic UK tour with only the two of us. We can't wait. 24.03 Sofarsounds London// 29.03 Sneaky Pete's Edinburgh // 01.04 Hug and Pint Glasgow// 02.04 Gathering session Glasgow // 06.04 Halfmoonmusic London Read the full article

ABOUT 7 PLAYLISTS ON SPOTIFY
Since September I´ve been trying to create an original playlists on Spotify with music that I like and I wanna share with you guys. In this post I just wanna link them, in case you wanna find them, listen to them or at least maybe find some new unknown artists to you :) Enjoy them anywhere you go, if you´re on board, commute to work or school, even when you are at home.
( Click on the picture, you will be linked to Spotify playlists]

SUSANE LISTENS VOL.1
Banfi - Mercy Street
The Kooks - Naive
The Wombats - Let´s Dance To Joy Division
Lake Malawi - Paris
Arctic Monkeys - Four Out of Five
Cage the Elephant - Cigarette Daydreams
Coasts - You
Lake Malawi - Maryland
This playlist is one of my favourites, I found Banfi on concert in Prague, actually it was concert of Lake Malawi releasing their album Surrounded by Light. The Kooks are one of my fav band ever, so Arctic Monkeys are. Cigarette Daydreams by Cage the Elephants reflects amazingly my after break up period in my life two years ago. Coasts - the british band, I discovered thanks to my friend at concert in Prague last year. Wombats just perfectly combines all of that together. and Paris and Maryland by Lake Malawi - Czech pop-indie-rock band is kind of signature songs from time, when I was alone in Prague, long-distance relationship and long walks around Prague with my thoughts. You can vote for Lake Malawi in Eurovision until 21st January. Download the app to your phone, vote for Lake Malawi here.
Můj první a jeden z mých nejoblíbenějších playlistů. The Kooks jsou moje nejoblíbenější kapela, to samé Arctic Monkeys - takže tyhle dvě kapely v mých playlistech nemůžou chybět.
SUSANE LISTENS VOL.2
Plini - Electric Sunrise
Bon Iver - Holocene
Alex Turner - Glass in the Park
Radiohead - Daydreaming
Jeff Beck - Unforgiven
Olafur Arnalds, Nanna Bryndis Hilmadotir - Particles
Olafur Arnalds - study for player piano
Mogwai - Take me somewhere nice
Gavin Luke - The Gift
Laraaji - Introspection
Aaron Lansing - Faded Dreams
Hans Zimmer - Time
James Horner - The bioluminescence of the night
Nicolas Hooper - Harry & Hermione
This one was meant to be for listening to fall asleep - for me perfect. However, the first song might be a little bit distracting :) Third song by Alex Turner and his Glass in the Park, originally made for the Submarine movie - aww his voice, his lyrics, the music, so calming so sweet…it just caresses my soul. The rest of the songs will take you to your Dreamland very quickly. Calm and relaxing music, nice slow voices joining the whole atmosphere and inviting to fall asleep or just balance your mind and think about something nice. My fav is Particles, Avatar Music and the song from Harry Potter - looove how smooth and touching this music is.
Třetí píseň od Alexe Turnera a jeho Glass in the Park, pocházející ze soundtracku k filmu The Submarine. Jeho hlas, texty a hudba vás pohladí. Zbytek písniček vás zaručeně vezmou do říše snů.
SUSANE LISTENS VOL.3
Alabama Shakes - Gimme All Your Love
London Grammar - Hey Now
Cold Beat - 62 Moons
Daughter - Youth
Banfi - If not for you
Lake Malawi - Not My Street
Phoenix - Too Young
Florence + The Machines - Delilah
Tycho - See
Coldplay - Midnight
Alabama Shakes - Sound & Color
The Veils - Swimming with the Crocodiles
Awww each song is so nicely done. Great background music for each situation - if you are home cooking, you´ve got friends at your place, going shopping or just walking somewhere…I kind of like this playlist for anything. Alabama Shakes is American band with distinctive and soulful rock, and voice of the lead singer is something magical. Second song by London Grammar - I´ve discovered this trio because of Dior J´adore commercial and since then I looove them - very moody, but so good. Phoenix and their French indie-pop won´t let you calm :) Coldplay and their Midnight is such a masterpiece for thinking or creating, and last song by The Veils - Swimming in the Crocodiles is just right full stop for this music session.
SUSANE LISTENS VOL.4
Lana Del Rey - Brooklyn Baby
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
Fatboy Slim - Right Here, Right Now
George Michael - Freedom
Jamiroquai - 7 Days in June
Moloko - Time is Now
Morcheeba - Rome Wasn’t Built in A Day
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
Nirvana - Lithium
David Bowie - The Man who sold the world
Placebo - Twenty Years ago
Blink 182 - I Miss You
This playlist symbolizes a window into taste of music of my childhood. I´m very grateful to my parents leading me to listen to different styles of music and they educated me pretty well in that. Music played all the time at our home, and we used to dance, sing and just be happy. Thank you for that :)
Muzika hrála v našem bytě neustále a my pořád zpívali, tančili a prostě byli šťastní.

Mockrát děkuji všem, kdo poslali song a můžeme si to určitě někdy zopakovat. Byla zábava si všechno poslechnout a vybírat. Mezi moje nejoblíbenější patří Alan Gogol - Chime - tu jsem neznala, velice krásná instrumentální kytarová hudba, Sia - Big girls cry, BEP - BIG LOVE, Pink Floyd - Echoes a mnoho dalších. Moje nejoblíbenější skladbu najdete na úplném konci playlistu :)
SUSANE LISTENS VOL.7
Isaac Gracie - Show Me The Love
Blushes - To the Bone
Skinny Living - What About Us (Pink Cover)
Joe McAdam - Going to New York
Ellysse Mason - Hunt Me Down
Eddie Vedder - Guaranteed
Stu Larsen - Til The Sun Comes Back
Roo Panes - Land of The Living
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall
Matthew and the Atlas - Can’t You See
Eddie Vedder - Rise
Anberlin - Creep
Ryan Adams - Oh My Sweet Carolina
Paul Canning - Your song
Angus & Julia Stone - Stay With Me
Last but definitely not least playlist ♥ Have a look - full of amazing artists♥ It´s focused on more like an acoustic performance. Each song has deep lyrics and great mood. We discovered Blushes - the band with synthetizer is only exception with electric quitars , amazing band we saw in Jimmy´s Club MCR. Joe McAdam - busker from Christmas markets and his calming voice is amazing for the soul. After this song you´ve got a chance to listen to his girlfriend Ellysse - very talented and beautiful aswell…check them on SPOTIFY :) ♥ Stu Larsen is our all-time fav mate, traveler, photographer, musician - if you don´t know his music…hurry up and listen to his lyrics and amazing guitar game. Eddie Vedder composed this music for soundtrack for INTO THE WILD movie…both as movie so as soundtrack is one of my fav music. Ryan Adams has re-made Wonderwall originally by Oasis into something different, but soo pleasing :) Roo Panes is a band with very charismatic leading singer - ladies :) but his voice is as charming as his appearance :)
Máme tu poslední playlist, plný skvělých umělců, kteří si zaslouží trochu lásky ♥ Tady jsem se více soustředila na výběr spíše akustické hudby. Každý song má krásný text a uvede vás do skvělého rozpoložení. Blushes jsme objevili s Honzou tady v MCR v Jimmy´s klubu.
And finally we´re at the end of today´s article :)

We are All Struggling Musicians
This is a letter I am writing in response to a number of people I have seen post online lately about wanting/thinking about leaving the Church because of how they see members of the Church acting, etc.
Dear friend. I noticed your comments that you were leaving the Church. I sincerely hope this is not so and hope it has not happened yet. As I read your comments I felt I should write you a message and, unsure of what exactly to say, here is a thought...
I am 2nd of 11 children. In my family, music has always a big part of life. We sang, we played, and I eventually got into writing music as well. I play a few instruments and generally have a very big love of music and how it makes me feel. Music is kind of a part of my senses and helps me express and feel emotions in a way I can't do without it. One of my favorite musicians to listen to is Olafur Arnalds. Very beautiful music. When I listen, sometimes it fills me with such emotion that I have a hard time breathing and I want to burst open. It's amazing to me.
There is something so perfect and God-like about some music. I think I am moved as often by the Spirit of God by music as I am any other form of testimony and expression. One of my favorite hymns is "There is Sunshine in my soul today". My mom thinks that's odd (she isn't a huge fan of that one). Anyway, the second verse in that hymn says, "There is sunshine in my soul today, a carol to my King. And Jesus listening can hear the songs I cannot sing." I love that - and I know exactly what that means.
One of the things that I sometimes struggle with, being a trained musician, is not being critical of music when I hear it in church or just about anywhere else, for that matter. I can hear every off-tune note, bad pronunciation, bad breathing, and many other things that tend to annoy me. Well, one Sunday, I was listening to someone sing a solo in church. He wasn't that good, to be honest. In fact, it was pretty below-average. At first, I sat there bugged and frustrated with it. But then the Spirit whispered that verse from my favorite hymn (the one I just wrote about above). And I was suddenly struck that perhaps this person was just trying to express their love and appreciation for the Lord in their own imperfect, but sincere way. That somehow, this was a "song they could not sing." And I knew that "Jesus listening" could indeed hear. Thinking about it now makes me emotional. So many times I have felt inadequate to the tasks and expectations of the gospel and all it offers and teaches. So many times I have failed. And yet, He forgives. And I feel joy in my repentance. And when I fail to adequately "sing my song", He listening can still hear my even feeble effort.
I don't know what your expectation of the "Church" or of others is, but I think sometimes we all tend to be "trained musicians" and have a hard time listening to the songs that others do not sing adequately enough for us. Sometimes we just hear the bad notes, the bad breathing, and everything else that doesn't work for our trained ears. It seems that you have a trained heart - one that sees the Savior's message about love and service. Many, as you know, do not sing that song well. They fail at it often. But the song is still true. And Jesus listening can hear. He even hears you in whatever efforts you make.
I think maybe you forget that the Church is not a perfect body. It is a learning body. It is just about individuals trying to hold on to each other and doing their best to be better, to sing as well as we can. Some are better than others. Some don't try very hard, if at all. But the Church, the Gospel, is still true. Your membership in the Church is not about what everyone else does or about anyone else's imperfections or what songs they do not sing. It is just about how through the beauty of the gospel ordinances and teachings, Jesus hears your effort, your song and gently forgives, loves, and improves us.
On the other hand, Satan is the Great Distracter. He will try to make you focus on anything he can, to get you to forget what you know and what you have felt. You see, what was true is always true (truth does not change). If you knew it was true, then it is still true - you may just be forgetting because you've been distracted. Even my love of music (a very good thing) can be a distraction, when I forget the songs I should hear and sing in exchange for the songs I am hearing with my earthly ear. But when I close my eyes and TRULY hear, I can hear what Jesus hears...the testimony, the reaching heart, the trial of doubt and the hope of obedience, the struggles of life, and the joys of eternal hope.
I know you can hear it. Close your eyes and listen to the smallest of songs around you. I know we don't all serve enough. But I see love of God and man all around me as people try to sing even their most feeble song of service. It certainly may not be our best. But it is a try. It is a step - a single note, perhaps. And maybe, just maybe, you can hum with them and help them find the note. This Church, you see, isn't about what the Church does. It's about what YOU do and how Christ turns our willingness into the song of a thousand angels.
I have a feeling that with your love of service, you could make a difference. You could, by singing the beautiful song of tolerance, of love, of service, of forgiveness, help others hear that same song and maybe, just maybe, with time the Church will finally live up to the expectations of not just us, but of our Savior. Wouldn't that be amazing?! And you - yes you - could play a part. I feel it is so.
Lastly, I just want to let you know…I KNOW that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints is the true church of God. I know that Jesus is my Savior. I know that he indeed does hear our little, inadequate songs. For someone who must hear the best of all music in heaven, He still loves MY songs - the ones I do not sing well and even those I cannot yet sing.
Love, a member of the Church and a guy just trying to be a disciple of Christ.

Ambient-Electro Classical Producer Tom Ashbrook Releases ‘Too Soon’ Single
Ambient-electronic producer Tom Ashbrook releases his debut single ‘Too Soon’ on 27 September via The Other Songs. The track is lifted from his upcoming Sines EP, and was mastered by Mike Cave (Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, The Charlatans) and mixed by Mike Halls (Clean Cut Kid). Ashbrook has toured extensively throughout his life and has shared the stage with Simply Red’s Mick Hucknell at the Royal Albert Hall, played alongside Jools Holland as a session musician, and composed for the prestigious Matthew Bourne Dance Company. In addition he worked alongside Sir Paul McCartney and 6ix Toys composing the anthem for Liverpool’s 2008 award as European Capital of Culture city, and toured with well known Pink Floyd Tribute band, Brit Floyd. Originally hailing from Ilkley, Yorkshire, Ashbrook attended the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, and stayed on to make Liverpool his home. Both he and his sister are classically trained pianists, encouraged to immerse themselves in the arts when their parents bought them their first piano. Ashbrook soon discovered a love of improvising, writing and transcribing classical works rather than merely reading the music. Inspired by the greats such as John Williams, Pat Metheny, and Mike Oldfield, his love for synthesisers and experimentations with recording have shaped his own signature sound. Drawing parallels to the work of Max Richter, Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm, Ashbrook has always had a gift for drawing out emotions and meanings through melodies. ‘Too Soon’ is the first track from the upcoming EP Sines, centred around past experiences and the idea of the elements. ‘Too Soon’ metaphorically speaks of water, in a perfect passage of pensive piano. The music has a strong narrative quality, permeated by a rich melancholy that is haunting and melodic rather than depressing or morbid. Tom Ashbrook explains: “Too Soon is about remembrance, a personal experience with a family friends son tragically drowning at age 3. The idea of someone being taken too soon and not having the chance to live out their lives. The tape recording and fluttering nature of the piano is to imitate the beauty of water and I suppose how it makes up so much of us. At the same time, it can also tragically take lives. ‘Too Soon’ is mainly about remembering people and marking that time of losing someone.” Read the full article
