At the end of September I was once again going with my Rotary group to renew the fence at the Arashiyama bamboo grove, and like last year we could enter the Okochi Sanso Villa for free after that. Part 1 of the pics.

When Tim and Lorna saw the Bamboo forest and the lights of Inuyama
4th November 2019
Any trip to Japan really needs some time in Kyoto (the Old Capital). So we took the early train from Nagoya and got the connection to Arashiyama home to a pretty famous bamboo grove. It is one of the most photographed areas in Kyoto. The tall bamboo creates a darkened pathway which when there are less people can be atmospheric.
Walking through the forest we came upon Okochi Sanso. This country villa provides a fantastic view over the Arashiyama area. It belonged to a famous Japanese film star whose passion for traditional gardens led him to replicate one complete with shrines and cobbled pathways.
We greatly appreciated the opportunity to enjoy some matcha and sweets at the tea house.
After taking many photos of the views and the momoji we went into Kyoto to the most famous temple kiyomizu dera, which is impressive for its size and views over Kyoto.
The following weekend we took Tim and Lorna to our local treasure castle; Inuyama. Unfortunately it was undergoing some extensive restoration work which meant the exterior was completely covered in scaffolding. The interior is a great example of what an original keep would look like with very steep stairs and windows from which soldiers could throw missiles or shoot weapons at enemies. One of the best things about Japanese castles are the views from the top. This one is no exception with views of the Kiso River and in the other direction it is also possible to see the skyscrapers of Nagoya Station.
Nearby to Inuyama is Meiji Mura. It is an open air museum home to Meiji period (1868-1912) buildings and even a working steam engine. It has many exhibits but we were there mostly for the illuminations, which tend to happen in autumn and through the winter.

Peaceful Arashiyama
I dragged my aching body out of bed early for a shower and rushed to the station to meet Selma and Rezki. We found each other on the crowded platform and headed out to Arashiyama on the train, and then tram. We took some photos at the “Kimono Forest”, a series of columns that each contained a differently designed traditional kimono, and cleansed ourselves by plunging our hands into the water of the “Dragon Pond”. Since we had made all of this effort to get out here as early as possible we began our day at the Bamboo Forest which was almost empty at this early hour of the morning. The three of us were able to take as many photos as we wanted on the narrow path surrounded on each side by thick shoots of bamboo towering over us. It was a very peaceful spot with just the odd cyclist or pedestrian passing through the short pathway. Out of the “forest” we walked through the Okochi Sanso Garden in the sunlight up to the Arashikyo observatory where we enjoyed an incredible view over a river lined on each side with trees of every autumn colour. Several photos, videos, and selfies later we walked right down to the river to begin our loop back. The view from here was also spectacular, the different colours of the trees looked like an assortment of fluffy pillows on the mountainside. Rezki forced Selma and I to pose for his photos with this amazing background and we were happy to oblige, just standing there and watching the fit rickshaw guys running people up and down the street fogging up their plastic face masks. Our walk led us further around Arashiyama to the Tenryu temple where we each bought a ticket for the temple and garden for 800 yen. The lady was frantically making hand gestures at Rezki and speaking angry Japanese and for a while he thought she was telling him to take off his shoes before he realized that she was telling him that he can’t use his tripod inside. The temple itself wasn’t so impressive to me, although I don’t usually find myself that impressed or entertained by temples... But the garden was very beautiful. The trees and shrubs around the pond were perfectly manicured and colourful with the season, Selma and I could sit peacefully and relax while Rezki took his time getting his perfect shots. As our loop closed, we had reached one of the coffeeshops on my list at this spot – Arabica. In Hirafu there is a kiosk from the same chain but the brand is originally from Kyoto so I thought it important to get a flat white here and get a % stamp on my loyalty card that said Kyoto to go with all of the Niseko ones! There weren’t really any seats in the café, just a bench outside where we sat for a while with the other tourists and had a rest before carrying on our walk to the souvenir shops and the bridge. A bunch of schoolkids in yellow hats walked past and started waving and shouting out at us “hello!” and “I’m happy!” and whatever other English they knew. We also spotted a guy that looked just like Rezki but despite Selma and I begging him, he would not go over and ask to take a photo with him!
