Bertil Vallien created his first Brains in 1999, but by then he had already been thinking about them for over ten years. He wanted to capture a sleeping but living soul, a human being in the mysterious landscape between dream and wakefulness. Long before, he had heard of the "sleeper at Oknö", Karolina Olsson. Who, according to the stories, slept away 32 years of her life, but then suddenly woke up one April day in 1908. That story has, as I said, never left Bertil in peace and he has returned to it time and time again in his works. This spring of 2023, when Bertil celebrates 60 years as a glass artist at Kosta Boda, he has created a series of new Brains as a kind of gift to us who have followed his business over the years, and never stopped loving his unique ability to innovate the art of glass. The anniversary variants of Brains are slightly larger and heavier than the previous ones, and they rest comfortably on a hand made soft leather cushion. Like the artist himself towards the end of the day when it gets dark around the cabin and the last thoughts cool in his head. Semestertider och en händelserik men ändå spontan helg. Kom iväg söderut längs E22 vid lunchtid i fredags och var hungriga. Stannade spontant vid Påskallaviks Gästgiveri och åt. Jag föreslog en fika efteråt på Källströmsgården. Spontant möte där med Catharina och Bengt. På kvällen åter hungriga, kollade hur det såg ut med Oknö Krog, men där verkar inte vara krog längre. Blev Algots och några mackor hemmavid i stället. På lördagen tog vi cyklarna ner till Café Förlig Vind i Pataholm och en fantastisk mozarellamacka. De hade det stressigt med en hel karavan av Mustangbilar som vällde in, men fotografen Vanni Jung Ståhle som är en av systrarna som driver cafeet hann ändå med att komma förbi och hälsa lite. Vi hann med ett besök hos mina föräldrar också som tagit corona på allvar och isolerat sig innan vi åkte vidare till Sjöfartsmuseet i Figeholm där jag var guide två timmar. Efteråt var vi åter hungriga, märker att det här mest handlar om mat. Vi stannade till på Badholmen i Oskarshamn och det blev en spontan trerätters. Toast Skagen och Panacottan var fantastiska. Oxfilén var fin men det saknades något, kanske några picklade grönsaker eller ett kryddsmör till potatiskakan. Råvarorna var fantastiska och väl omhändertagna. Vi hade lite otur och lyckades komma till Badholmen med sommarvärmen när Oskarshamnarna gick man ur huse och köket låg en timme efter, men blev ändå mycket väl omhändertagna och ägaren kom ut och pratade lite. Och så blev det söndag och vi tog cyklarna till en tårtbuffé på Tuvas trädgårdscafé i Ålems Kyrkby. Det är fantastiskt hur restauranger och cafeer tar corona på allvar och erbjuder handsprit och trygga avstånd. Avslutar helgen med ännu en kväll i Figeholm. 18 besökare igår på två timmar och hoppas att det inte blir alltför öde i museet ikväll. Figeholm är ju lite som att komma hem. Karolina Olsson was a Swedish woman who purportedly remained in hibernation between 1876 and 1908 (32 years). This is believed to be the longest time that anyone has lived in this manner who then awoke without any residual symptoms. However, it has been claimed that Olsson may not really have been asleep and hibernating all that time. There were many unexplained characteristics of her state; for example, her hair, fingernails, and toenails did not seem to grow. She suffered a head wound while outdoors at age 14 on 18 February 1876, but seemed to recover from it quickly. On 22 February, she complained of a toothache. Her family believed that her tooth was sore because of witchcraft, and she was ordered to go to bed. However, when she fell asleep, she did not wake up. Her father was a fisherman and unable to afford a doctor, and the family relied instead on the advice of friends and the town midwife. Olsson's mother force-fed her milk and sugar water. Finally, the neighbors paid for a visit from a doctor, who was unable to wake the sleeping girl and determined that she was in a coma. This doctor continued to visit her for a year, after which he wrote to the editor of Scandinavia's leading medical journal, soliciting the help of other professionals in finding a cure for Olsson's continuous sleep-state. Olsson was visited by doctors who noted that her hair, fingernails, and toenails did not seem to grow. The family reported that Olsson occasionally sat up and "mumbled prayers she had learned by rote in childhood". One doctor who visited Olsson was Johan Emil Almbladh, who thought that her sleep-state was a result of hysteria. In July 1892, Olsson was hospitalized in Oskarshamn, where she was treated with electroshock therapy. On 2 August 1892, she was released from the hospital without awakening or her situation improving. The hospital said that the appropriate diagnosis was "dementia paralytica". However, there is little to suggest that she actually suffered from that illness. She was not re-examined by a doctor until she awoke from her sleep. During the entire time that she was asleep, Olsson was given two glasses of milk each day. Her mother died in 1904, and after this, a maid continued to take care of Olsson and the household. Upon the death of her brother in 1907, Karolina began crying hysterically, although she remained asleep. She reportedly did not touch any food that she received during her years in bed, and the family's maid never heard her speaking. Olsson awoke on 3 April 1908, 32 years and 42 days after she had first fallen asleep. The maid found her crying and jumping on the floor. When her surviving brothers arrived, however, she did not recognize them. She was very thin and pale, and she showed sensitivity to light during the first few days after awakening. She was weak and had difficulty speaking. She could still read and write, and she remembered everything that she had learned before she fell asleep. Newspaper reporters from all over Europe, England, and the United States traveled to Oknö to interview her, and she and the family went into hiding to avoid the attention. She submitted to psychiatric testing in Stockholm and was found to be in full possession of the faculties that she had possessed before she fell asleep. At 46 years old, she was described as appearing to be no older than 25.
