shinazugawa sanemi is NOT the love interest of my dream office romcom! - chapter 3 (fuck me - no, not literally!)
ɞ an | this is a buildup to the okinawa trip arc in ch4 and ch5. i promise, we'll get more juicy bits soon! i wonder what will happen when sanemi and reader are on an island all by themselves... likes/comments/rb are appreciated. do let me know what you think about the fic! find the masterlist here ɞ cw / wc | mangaka!mitsuri and manager!obanai, sanemi's manboobs, blowjob mention, mdni (18+), 1.5k+
You think you might like ‘Doki-Doki Island Escape’ a little more than what you’d rather admit. You spend your weekend flipping through the first volume of the manga, in-between folding laundry and washing dishes (one of the many banes of your existence).
The story starts off like any other: the protagonist visits her grandparents in Okinawa for summer vacation. She dreams about the ocean views and blue skies, but meets a boy her age that shows her the island’s secret: a magical gem that grants the user a single wish. As the pair explore the island and fall in love, they try to ignore their inevitable separation at the end of summer.
The volume ends there. You put the book down and stare at the dark sky outside your apartment window, briefly thinking about a life where you’d wake up to the sound of waves crashing against the shore. There’s no boss breathing down your neck for project proposals, no skyscrapers obscuring the light-polluted sky. You close your eyes. If you try hard enough, you can almost smell the salty sea and hear the caw of seabirds.
Nope. It’s just a dream, after all, and the reality you live in is unfortunately a lot more pathetic than an idyllic Okinawan life.
You wake up the next morning to your third alarm, blasting from your phone as the device vibrates off your nightstand and clatters to the ground. It’s Monday and you have 15 minutes to get ready for work. You curse and jump out of bed, though your comforter tangles around your legs and you tumble onto your bedroom floor with a muffled thump. You waste an extra minute unwrapping yourself and nursing the bump on your knee.
You race around your tiny Tokyo apartment in record time to make yourself look somewhat presentable for the office. No matter how attractive you think a beefy, handsome manager scolding you for being late would be, Shinazugawa would rather have your head on a pike (which is, contrary to popular belief, not as attractive). You thank yesterday-you for having enough sense to iron your clothes in advance. You wriggle your head through your shirt, grab your blazer and bag, and bolt out the door – though you end up having to turn back because you’ve forgotten ‘Doki-Doki Island Escape’ on your bed, and you’re meeting with the client today.
The morning rush is as unforgiving as ever. You make space for yourself on the packed train by shoving your way through, muttering ‘sorry’s that don’t sound very sorry in the first place. You look at the time on your phone. Maybe you’ll have enough time to grab breakfast at the convenience store. As the doors open and droves of people step off the train, you yelp and clutch onto a handlebar to avoid being swept off with the crowd. So much for that Okinawa dream.
You make it to the office on time and in one piece. It’s a miracle, really.
“Hey, you’re not late today!” Masachika grins.
You pretend to swing your fist at his head. He easily dodges, laughing it off. You spend the next ten minutes scarfing down your breakfast (red bean bread and a carton of juice) as Masachika tells you what he did over the weekend: taking care of his niece, watching a movie with his partner, the new recipe for chicken nanban he tried out. Way more entertaining and productive than your own weekend.
You don’t have the heart to tell him that you spent half the time writing a new smut fic, so you lie about preparing for today’s meeting. The doubtful face Masachika gives you makes you feel a little bad, but not enough for you to tell the truth. You really, really don’t want to elaborate on how your protagonist gets eaten out by a vampire hottie.
At 9.30am, you head over to a meeting room with Masachika and Shinazugawa. Your clients are already seated inside. The author, Kanroji Mitsuri, is all pretty in pink. Her eyes glitter and for a moment, you’re stunned, recoiling as sparkles and flowers pop up all around her face with a lovey dovey theme song playing in the background. Her aura shines like the sun.
“Shinazugawa! Hi!” she smiles, and you’re almost knocked out by the pureness that radiates off of her.
It’s a stark contrast compared to her manager, Iguro Obanai. Kanroji and him are as different as night and day. He’s dressed in all black and has a face mask on, with a glare so deadly it makes you want to prostrate yourself and beg for forgiveness for breathing the same air as him. You’re not quite sure who’s more terrifying – him or Shinazugawa. The more you think about it, the more you consider resigning from your job and living as a NEET, so that you never have to interact with men who haven’t outgrown their puberty-induced rebellious phase (i.e., Shinauzawa Sanemi and Iguro Obanai who think that glowering at everyone and everything is cool. It is not. It makes them look unapproachable and like a prick, not quite quiet and mysterious and Edward from Twilight as they intend to be. Though, you’re not one to gentle-parent a man into being socially approachable, so that’s on them to figure out).
“Shinazugawa,” Iguro mumbles, though it doubles as a greeting. “Let’s make this fast. We have a lunch appointment after this, and I hate being late.”
You take a seat with Shinazugawa opposite Kanroji and Iguro, as Masachika serves everyone tea. Thankfully, even though your boss has a temper that reckons he must’ve been born out of Satan’s asshole, he’s professional and dependable when it matters. It turns out that Shinazugawa and Iguro have worked together before. A pair of unlikely friends, though you keep that thought to yourself since you do want to live to see another day.
The meeting goes by smoothly. Kanroji is easygoing, and agrees wholeheartedly with the idea that you propose – a large poster set-up at a train station. It’ll help passengers connect the story of the manga with a vacation destination, and reach out to a varied audience on their daily commute. You’re relieved as Kanroji gushes excitedly over it, though you try to ignore the daggers that Iguro is throwing at you with his eyes. Shinazugawa silently nods along as you speak. You’re pleasantly surprised he doesn’t interrupt you.
The meeting ends with setting a date to see each other again in a month. You attempt to scamper off to your desk after sending Kanroji and Iguro off, but Shinazugawa calls for you and Masachika to stay back in the meeting room for a little longer.
“We’ll make a trip to Okinawa this weekend,” he says, arms crossed over his chest (drool-worthy, strong and broad, insert another fifty adjectives here to convey the sheer delight of a man’s boobs).
You gape. It isn’t strange for teams to conduct field research to understand the subject of their projects better, though Okinawa seems a little out of the company’s budget for you to take Shinazugawa at face value.
“Seriously?” Masachika scratches the back of his neck, sighing. “What a waste. I took the weekend off because I have to take my parents to the hospital for a check-up. I guess it’ll just be the both of you, then.”
Wait. Wait, wait, wait.
“Alright. I’ll see you at the airport Saturday morning,” Shinazugawa nods at you.
Cut the cameras.
You are not about to go on a two-day-one-night trip to Okinawa with your manager. Sure, the purpose of the trip is to collect research material for your project, but it doesn’t help that it’s Shinazugawa Sanemi is the one going with you (read again: SHINAZUGAWA SANEMI, HOTHEADED BOSS, KNOWS YOU WRITE FANFICTION ABOUT HIM, AND IS HOT AS FUCK).
Heaven and hell must be plotting against you, because you don’t know if you’re overcome with joy or despair.
You hope that you’re sharing – NO! You will have separate rooms. There will be absolutely no tomfoolery. This is not a real life fanfiction fever dream come true, where there is only one bed and Okinawa will be storming all weekend so you’re forced to stay indoors with each other’s company. This is a very professional work trip, thank you very much.
“Yeah,” you mutter under your breath. “Yeah. I can do this.”
You’re strong. You’re independent. You will not fall for the office eye candy that is Shinazugawa Sanemi. As much as you can appreciate any well-groomed and decent looking man, office relationships are a line you’ve never considered crossing. It’s dangerous yet enticing, although you’d rather spend your time worrying about your 13th month bonus than sucking someone’s dick in the office storeroom on your lunch break.
Shinazugawa gives you a puzzled look. The more he tries to understand you, the more he realises you are simply an enigma to him. He doesn’t know why he even bothers. A vein pops out on his forehead.
“If you’re done talking to yourself about nothing, then you can go back to your work,” he seethes.
“Yes! I’m sorry, we’re on our way!”
You squeak out an apology and shove Masachika out of the meeting room.
“I can’t believe you’re abandoning me with Shinazugawa,” you sniff.
“I know you’ve dreamt about it. Make sure to use protection, okay?”
“Shut up! It’s not like that!”
Masachika laughs and you whack him over the head.

Did you know that edamame literally means 'branch bean' (枝豆)? Did you know why?
Look at that! I found something wonderful in the farmstand vending machine. Very festive and exciting.
To make delicious edamame, you want about 40g of salt per liter of water. Wash the pods thoroughly, then combine them in a bowl with about half the salt and massage vigorously. Add the rest of the salt to boiling water, toss in the beans, and boil for 4~5 minutes. To ensure that they cook evenly, cover the pot or stir occasionally.
Extra credit:
For maximum flavor, snip the pods at one end with scissors after washing. Both ends if you have time. (I did not bother but I did add the fancy flaky Okinawan salt after.)
For maximum authenticity, pair with the traditional accompaniment (spaghetti in burst tomato sauce), serve in the traditional vessel (a mug-bowl adorned with a beautiful leopard—thank you, @destinationtoast!!!), and enjoy with cold brew and the rest of the episode of Columbo during which you fell asleep the night before.

What do you think is Tenma's and others' favourite food and drink?
Ooh, favorite foods! Okay so please bear with me, I’m not familiar with Japanese cuisine but I’ll give it a shot!
First, the first-years! Tsurugi has a sweet tooth, but he wouldn’t admit it even on pain of death and only Yuuichi knows because Tsurugi believes it’d take away from his reputation otherwise. He loves rice cakes, especially with fillings. He’s also a fan of dried beans covered with sugar.
Hikaru is also a major fan of sweets and is willing to try whatever's offered to him, but his absolute favorite is coffee jelly. He can sometimes be bribed with sweets if necessary. To finish up the sweet tooth trio, Aoi loves any type of cake, although she prefers milder tastes instead of super sweet. She and Hikaru go out to cafes to try out their menu and manage to drag Tsurugi along eventually, although he’ll pretend to come along just to humor them. These three are also the biggest fans of going to Tenma’s place, because Aki usually has some homemade baking ready.
Shinsuke really likes onigiri, it’s simple yet tasty, and easy to share with friends. No need for any fancy dishes for him! He’s also a fan of sweets, although not as bad as the three mentioned above, and he likes fruit-flavored soy milk.
Kariya likes takoyaki the most! It’s pretty easy to get, so he likes treating himself to it if he’s done well on a test or something, or if he’s just in the mood. Since he lives in an orphanage, food options are dependent on whatever gets prepared there, so while the food is good he doesn’t really have any input in dinner. Makes it extra nice to get takoyaki as a snack for himself!
If asked, Tenma’s favorite food is whatever Aki prepares because her cooking is amazing, but his favorite dish would be gōyā chanpurū, Okinawan stir fry. He’s loved it since he was young, and now that he lives in Tokyo, it reminds him of home. He also enjoys sweet snacks, particularly mitarashi dango and sata andagi (which is also from Okinawa, and he loves it for similar reasons).
Onto the second-years! Hamano loves sashimi (raw fish), but he doesn’t really have a preference for a specific type. He also likes taiyaki, fish-shaped cakes, not only because of the taste but also because they’re, well, in the shape of a fish. He and Hayami often get some if they're hanging out after school, most often with red bean paste or custard filling. Although Hayami likes taiyaki too, he prefers gyõza (Japanese dumplings). He’s also a pretty big tea fan, especially green tea, which he has in common with Shindou.
Speaking of - everyone knows Shindou is a rich kid. Influential, loaded family that goes to operas and pays for private tutoring outside of school and eats at a five star restaurant every other month. And yet, ironically, his absolute favorite food turns out to be homemade ramen from Rairaiken (after his friends have introduced him to it, of course). He likes to experiment with toppings and is delighted whenever he finds a new combination he enjoys.
Kirino’s favorite food is sushi, also because there’s such a wide variety of it, and he can pick whatever he feels like at that moment. Luckily for him, he’s best friends with rich kid Shindou, and whenever they hang out at his manor, the staff knows to prepare sushi. Kirino takes full advantage of this and claims it’s payment for dealing with Shindou’s soccer strategy ramblings. Just like Shindou and Hayami, he likes green tea, but he prefers royal milk tea.
Nishiki picked up a love for Italian cuisine during his time abroad. He loves ravioli (stuffed pasta) and he’s got a preference for ciabatta bread. He’s lucky enough not to be lactose intolerant like many other Japanese people, and he absolutely LOVED spending time in a country with countless cheese options, in which Japan is, unsurprisingly, lacking. He’s cooked for his friends a few times and it was a pretty big success.
Midori and Kurama, surprisingly enough, share their favorite food: kushiyaki, skewered and grilled foods. Midori loves grilled pork skewers, whereas Kurama’s favorite are grilled vegetable skewers. Midori likes other types as well, but Kurama’s a picky eater so he'll stick to his vegetables, thank you very much.
Akane can usually be found with various types of bread in her bento, the specific kind switching every day. It’s her favorite snack and she usually brings some to eat during afternoon practice. Her favorites are melonpan and anpan (filled with red bean paste). She brings enough for the entire team as a treat if they’ve won a particularly hard match. She also really loves bubble tea (her favorite is honeydew milk tea), and often drags Aoi and Midori along. Aoi’s favorite is matcha milk tea, and Midori’s is black milk tea.
Aoyama, as mentioned in the AR one-shot collection, is obsessed with noodles. His favorite is kitsune udon, but he likes switching it up so he also orders other dishes quite regularly. Ichino also appreciates udon and other noodle foods (he doesn’t really have a choice, being best friends with Aoyama), and he’s also a big fan of shaved ice.
Finally the third-years! They’ve actually got a pretty big thing in common there: they all prefer the company over the food, really. Sangoku, for example, doesn’t really have a favorite food. He loves cooking, and cooking for others, and he’s a fan of trying out new recipes, although he favors traditional Japanese meals. He originally taught himself how to cook because his mother is usually busy with work, but discovered a love for it and he likes seeing his friends enjoy his food. He does really enjoy a good cup of green tea, though, like Shindou and Hayami.
Next, Kurumada! If asked, he claims he likes going to yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurants with his friends most. He thinks it’s tasty, and he likes having multiple options for food and being able to just get whatever he’s in the mood for at the time. It’s only made better by the company, although inviting his team along has been known to end in chaos.
Amagi’s favorite food is katsudon, which he has in common with Mahoro. When they were kids, he, Mahoro and their childhood friend Kousaka Yukie would eat it as often as their parents would allow - that’s where his love for shared meals began, because it’s much more fun to eat together than alone.
…I may have gone a bit overboard with this. Whoops?
Hope you enjoyed!

Imma be mad predictable with my request because. I am. So Sledgefu + (two choices) "Everything wrong, and nowhere to go." or "And what does this have to do with love, except everything?" :*
hi babe!! hope you feel better <3
from this <3
17. and what does this have to do with love, except everything?
He can feel his eyes on the side of his face, like a brand that shifts under his skin.
“Gene,” Snafu says again, like he couldn’t have heard him the first time. “Genie. Eugene.”
“Heard you the first time, Snaf.” Eugene says, when he’s getting tired of the gaze, unsettling and intense on the side of his face.
The rain comes down in great sheets of quaking ocean, salt in the open, gashing wounds of Okinawan shell craters.
He has his head bowed, trying to protect the half-empty can of beans that fills with rain quicker than he can eat them, and jolts slightly when Snafu’s bare, rain-soaked palm pushes at the back of his bare, rain-soaked shoulder.
“Jus’ one.” He says, and Eugene finally gives up on the beans, looking up and letting the rain fall into his eyes. He’s too used to it to even really notice the sting.
“No.” He says, and Snafu huffs.
The mud sloshes over Eugene’s already filth-dyed jungle boots and khakis as Snafu slides down the small hill, throwing out his arm entirely to wrap it around Eugene’s neck for balance.
“One more.” He says, wet and clammy and cold. Mud slides down Eugene’s collar, down his back. It would be repulsive if he felt anything, anymore. He huffs and drops the can.
“Nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs.” He deadpans, and Snafu grins, wide and sharp. He turns his face up towards the rain, and Gene watches as the heavy drops of water slide down the column of his neck and pool at his collarbone.
“One more.” He says, again, and Eugene snorts, shoving the heel of his hand into his bony side.
Snafu doesn’t laugh, but he exhales through his nose, leaving Eugene’s side easily and bouncing back even quicker, knocking shoulders with him. He’s quiet, and doesn’t say anything else, but Eugene looks down and thinks, anyway.
He can barely see his boots, swallowed by the mud. “God willin’ and the creek don’t rise.” He says, all at once, and Snafu’s pruney fingers come up to poke at the ball of his shoulder.
“Creek sure is risin’, right now.” He says, and Eugene shrugs against him. He’s almost cool relief, against the relentless humidity.
(Almost.)
“Yeah,” He says, as Snafu’s fingers prod at the back of his neck, tugging through the short hairs at his nape. “But. I dunno. Maybe one day it’ll stop.”
Snafu’s fingers still. He leans closer, all wiry muscle and unsettling intensity.
“Yeah.” He says.
They both know that Eugene’s wrong.

Happy 1-11!! My lil year of the dragon kagamimochi has been sitting in my new year's doorway shrine since just after christmas, so the day finally came to crack him open. I was surprised to see, too, that there was actually a WHOLE kagamimochi inside, and not prepackaged pieces like you generally find in these. It's bad luck to cut kagamimochi with a knife, and finding a whole hard-but-still-slightly-moist mochi inside presented some hammer-proof logistical problems (ever seen a metal hammer just bounce uselessly off food? Because I did today lol). Ultimately I decided pushing through with a plastic spatula between the cakes had to be safe and finally was able to break it into useable pieces. 😂
Hokkaido beans (as you do), but also Okinawan raw sugar lumps also went into this which was pretty neat, so top to bottom Japan represented. The sugar had a very high and rich molasses content, so if you, too, are wanting to make sweet bean soup, I think dark brown sugar would be a reasonable substitute.
Still, happy to see this conclusion to the new year's festivities thus far, until the Lunar New Year. My lil dragon guy has 2024 stamped on the bottom, so there's no forgetting!🐉
A happy and very lucky new year to you all, however you celebrate. 💖

We've survived the highs and lows of Jyama Ball, but we're only a little bit closer to discovering who the Desaster is. If they go undiscovered to the final round, they win the game outright and get their ideal world. And with the mysterious executives, Keiwa, Neon, and Ace's respective sponsors, Archimedel, and Buffa all making their moves, something tells me the real game is only beginning.
...more importantly than any of that though, where the Hell are we headed now?! Why are there BOMBS everywhere? What do the Jyamato even have to gain from these constant invasions other than food and conquest?
All these questions and more... probably not answered today, but like, important to keep in mind.
Spoilers, I guess...
-Neooooon!
-Neon, baby, if you're the impostor I'm gonna cry.
-Good morning Chirami.
-Oh okay, we're supposed to become fan favorite. I see.
-Well, from what I've seen from the fandom as of yesterday, a number of folks have taken very kindly to Sae-san (rightfully so), so if this were the real world she'd probably win this. Doubly so if she's the Desaster.
-Oh shit! Sara-neesan!
-...oh, she's... she's fine, seemingly.
-Can't cut a pineapple smh.
-Bomb Pineapple!
-Ohhhh, we're dead.
-Jyamato Express!
-Fruit!
-Bombs!
-Fruit Bombs!
-Ooooooh, even more Jyamato ciphers.
-I imagine a lot of folks are hard at work.
-Blowing up an entire city block.
-I see Creepy Garden Daddy Archimedel's very proud of his little Freedom Clubbers.
-Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes!
-Damn, Takahashi's Steam list must be wilding.
-Secret Mission Clear!
-For you, fox man!
-Awwww, spider phone cute :)
-First Blood!
-The Gun!
-Magnum!
-It's back!
-Ringo?
-There's just something so funny to me about how minimal the Jyamato Pawn costumes are. Head, limbs, uniform, that's all you need.
-"OHHHHHH MY SISTER'S GETTING BOMBED"
-"Oh hey little bro, I got tied up. Can you do me a solid and get the kitchen knife?"
-Sae-san's very cool and collected under pressure. Can see why she was picked for this.
-Oh hey, Mrs. Kurama~! I'm still pissed you slapped my homegirl Neon, just so you're aware.
-"Neon's a big girl, she can handle herself. She'd never be able to achieve her dreams"
-Ohhhh, Papa Naoto. You're extremely sus.
-"Time to go to work. See you around."
-I see Mama Kurama's not an entirely heartless lunatic.
-You tell her, girl!
-I'm gonna be honest, I'd be proud of Neon if she were the Desaster.
-There's the Buffa Core ID.
-No doubt there's gonna be a lot of Zombie DNA in that mutant.
-Oh?
-Oh, hello.
-Sponsor-sama!
-So, she's got big plans for ol' Michinaga.
-Beroba...
-Ohhhhh, he's got an infection.
-"You wanna beat the shit outta all them dirty Kamen Riders, huh~? How about you let me pay for everything, no strings attached!"
-A proper sadist, this one!
-Takahashi's giving us a lot of interesting female characters this go around.
-Well, Beroba-san. You're obviously a cold-blooded murderer, you've got a killer fashion sense, your first appearance is accompanied by scary organ music, you're friends with Papa Archie, you got jelly beans...
-Yeah, you're totally trustworthy. I hear you're played by an idol?
-Sae-san... you care a hell of a lot about your family, huh?
-Oooooh, Okinawan.
-Keeping yourself in peak condition for your family. I happen to know a dude in a bathhouse who'd be very impressed with you, Sae-san.
-Neon...
-Who threw that bomb?
-"Did somebody say BOMB~!?"
-Gotta save Onee-sama!
-Ohhhh, sunset is fast approaching.
-I'm surprised we haven't seen lemons yet.
-At least, I don't think so, the picture quality I have ain't the best.
-Michinaga!
-Jurapira!
-Buffato!
-Oooooh, he's pissed!
-"Fuck the bull! Go get pineapples for our Hawaiian barbecue!"
-Can't get in!
-Ooooooh, Zombie Tycoon!
-Damn, Keiwa's playing hard!
-Red Wire.
-HOLY SHIT BUFFA DODGED POINT BLANK
-Goddamn, these stunts are sick every time I see 'em.
-OHHHHH MY DUDE JEAN GOT A GUN
-Okay I checked, it seems it's Gene, okay.
-Hello, Beroba-chan. Guess the dweebs are fighting.
-"I'm betting all my money on that buffalo guy."
-...seems that Gene's okay with this.
-OH GOD NEE-SAMA
-Red wire!
-Nut up man, do it!
-We did it!
-No more pineapple for ever.
-Sibling banter
-Oh man, it's dark out.
-Seems Michi's in no shape to kill anyone today.
-Compass!
-Snacc
-Well, gotta keep the sponsors happy.
-Oh, the producer's coming in.
-...wonder if this is a metaphor of some kind.
-Ah yep! Sae-san was the sussiest baka all along!
-Lone wolf Lopo played nice for so long.
-Oooooh, that's a Glare retool. ...I suppose Gazer's our new "coming in hot and spicy".
-I wonder if we're gonna see a new DGP higher-up come kick ass every new arc?
-...fuck, what if we have to beat up Mama Mitsume? I don't think poor Ace can handle it.
-Shit seems to be getting real now.

How to Plan a Hawaiian Luau Party in Chicago: Menu Ideas and Tips
Planning a Hawaiian luau party is a fantastic way to bring the spirit of the islands to Chicago, and crafting the perfect luau food menu in Chicago, IL is essential to capturing the authentic flavors of Hawaii. Whether you’re hosting in your backyard or renting an indoor space, this guide will help you plan every detail for an unforgettable luau experience, from the menu to the entertainment.
1. Selecting the Perfect Venue
Choosing the right location is the first step to setting the tone for your luau party.
Outdoor Venues: If you want to capture the essence of a traditional Hawaiian luau, consider hosting your party outdoors. Popular locations include local parks, beaches along Lake Michigan, or your backyard. Outdoor spaces provide the perfect backdrop for Hawaiian decorations, games, and a pig roast.
Indoor Alternatives: For a more controlled environment, especially if you’re concerned about Chicago’s unpredictable weather, you could rent a hall, community center, or a restaurant with a private room. Indoor venues can be transformed into a tropical paradise with the right decor and lighting.
2. Setting the Scene with Authentic Decor
The right decorations are crucial for immersing your guests in the luau theme. Here’s how to set the scene:
Entrance Decor: Start with a lei greeting at the entrance to welcome guests. You can use fresh flower leis, or for a budget-friendly option, go with silk or plastic leis in bright colors.
Tropical Ambiance: Decorate with palm leaves, tiki torches, and bamboo accents to create a lush, island feel. Hang string lights or lanterns for evening events to add a soft, inviting glow. Scatter seashells and sand around tables for added detail.
Table Settings: Use brightly colored tablecloths, preferably with floral patterns, and add centerpieces featuring pineapples, coconuts, or tropical flowers. For a finishing touch, place mini umbrellas in guests’ drinks.
3. Creating an Authentic Luau Menu
An authentic Hawaiian menu is the heart of a luau. Here’s a comprehensive list of menu ideas:
Main Dishes:
Kalua Pig: Traditionally cooked in an underground oven (imu), but for practicality, you can slow-cook a pork shoulder in your oven or slow cooker. Season it with liquid smoke and Hawaiian sea salt to mimic the smoky, tender flavor of traditional Kalua pig.
Chicken Long Rice: A savory dish made with chicken, ginger, garlic, and clear mung bean noodles. It’s a staple in Hawaiian cuisine and can be prepared in advance.
Poke Bowls: Serve a variety of poke, including ahi tuna or tofu for a vegetarian option, with toppings like avocado, seaweed salad, and pickled ginger.
Lomi Lomi Salmon: This cold salad features salted salmon, tomatoes, onions, and occasionally green onions. It’s light, refreshing, and easy to prepare.
Side Dishes:
Poi: A staple of Hawaiian cuisine made from taro root. This starchy, purple paste has a slightly sour taste and pairs well with salty meats.
Hawaiian Macaroni Salad: A creamy pasta salad with mayonnaise, shredded carrots, and sometimes canned tuna or crab, which provides a cooling contrast to the main dishes.
Pineapple Fried Rice: Incorporate diced pineapples, ham, peas, carrots, and scrambled eggs into fried rice. Serve it in a hollowed-out pineapple for an impressive presentation.
Sweet Potatoes: Hawaiian purple sweet potatoes (Okinawan) are steamed and served as a simple side.
Desserts:
Haupia: A traditional coconut milk dessert that’s easy to prepare. It’s similar to a firm pudding and can be cut into squares.
Malasadas: Portuguese-style doughnuts that are popular in Hawaii. These sweet, fried treats can be rolled in sugar or filled with custard or coconut cream.
Coconut Pineapple Cake: A moist, fluffy cake infused with coconut milk and topped with pineapple slices and a sprinkle of shredded coconut.
Drinks:
Tropical Cocktails: Mai Tais, Blue Hawaiians, and Pina Coladas are classic choices. Offer non-alcoholic versions, such as virgin Pina Coladas and fruit punch, for guests who prefer not to drink.
Kona Coffee: Serve hot or iced Kona coffee for a taste of Hawaii’s famous coffee, perfect for an after-dinner pick-me-up.
4. Entertainment and Activities to Keep the Party Alive
A luau is as much about fun and entertainment as it is about food. Plan a mix of activities to keep guests engaged:
Hula Dancing: Hire professional hula dancers or a Hawaiian band to perform traditional dances. For added fun, arrange a hula dance lesson for your guests.
Limbo Contest: A limbo contest is a lively and interactive game that fits the tropical theme perfectly. Make it more festive by using a bamboo pole and playing Hawaiian music.
Lei-Making Station: Set up a craft station where guests can create their own flower leis. Provide fresh flowers, string, and instructions for a hands-on activity.
Photo Booth: Create a tropical photo booth with props like oversized sunglasses, grass skirts, and surfboards. Encourage guests to take photos to remember the event.
5. Crafting the Perfect Invitation and Dress Code
Set the tone for your luau party with creative invitations and a suggested dress code:
Invitations: Design invitations with tropical motifs like hibiscus flowers, tiki masks, and palm trees. You can send digital invites or go the traditional route with printed cards.
Dress Code: Encourage guests to dress in Hawaiian attire, such as aloha shirts, sundresses, grass skirts, and flip-flops. This adds to the fun and makes for great photos!
6. Preparing for Chicago’s Unpredictable Weather
Given Chicago’s variable weather, it’s wise to have a contingency plan:
Tent Rentals: Consider renting a tent or canopy if your event is outdoors. This provides shade from the sun and protection from any unexpected rain.
Indoor Backup Plan: If rain is in the forecast, have an indoor venue option ready. Make sure it’s decorated to match your outdoor theme so guests still feel the luau spirit.
7. Additional Tips for a Smooth Party Experience
Catering and Professional Help: If cooking an entire luau feast feels overwhelming, consider hiring a caterer specializing in Hawaiian cuisine. This allows you to focus on enjoying the event with your guests.
Early Planning: Start planning your party at least a month in advance to secure your venue, caterer, and entertainment. Send out invitations 3-4 weeks before the event.
Guest Comfort: Ensure there’s plenty of seating and shade, especially if the party is outdoors during summer. Provide cool beverages and sunscreen to keep guests comfortable.
By focusing on the right elements, from creating a stunning luau food menu in Chicago, IL to setting the perfect tropical ambiance, you’ll host a luau party that captures the essence of Hawaii and leaves a lasting impression on your guests. With the right planning and creativity, your Chicago luau will be the talk of the town!
