summary: winter in canada was cold. beautiful, but cold. it was the perfect time to tuck back in bed, warm mug of hot cocoa on one hand and a good book on the other. the plan was to spend the frigid day in the warm indoors, but there was last minute change: there was a frozen lake that looked relatively safe, so you, kara, and alice decided to ice skate while luther supervised. but hey, if you got to show off while spending time with your loved ones, then who are you to complain?
a/n: figure skating is my guilty pleasure uwu lmfao to be quite honest i used to be able to skate quite good and even managed to spin (badly but hey i spun) when i was younger, but it’s been such a long time that i’ve forgotten how to even move forwards lol so if it wasn’t clear, reader is a figure skater and they’re going to enjoy the winter wonderland w their wonderful girlfriend: kara.
also alice is a human because i said so,,
any and all feedbacks are appreciated ^^
you laid reposefully in your bed, wrapped by a multitude of blankets, as you unhurriedly flipped the pages of your book, taking full advantage of this uneventful day. you were leisurely reading when a weight plopped itself on your abdomen, pulling a small « oof » out of you. lifting your book, you found alice sprawled on you, grinning from ear to ear. she called out your name repeatedly, excitement clear in her tone. you couldn’t help but smile with her as you addressed the young girl: « hey kid. what got you so excited? you chuckled. – kara said we could go out ice skating today! she beamed. – oh yeah? sounds fun, you mused, diving back into your book. not the answer she was looking for so the brunette pressed on. – will you come with us? please, please please? pretty please with a cherry on top? she begged, puppy eyes conquering you every time. – okay, okay. i’ll come with. you chuckled, slipping yourself off of the bed. » the child bounced up cheerfully with a gleeful « yay! », and scurried off somewhere, probably to get ready.
after putting on a warmer set of clothings instead of your pajamas, you made your way to the living room where you found luther who was making sure that alice was fully protected from the elements. you walked to the kitchen where you found kara. you sneaked behind her and wrapped your arms around her waist, placing your chin on your shoulders, startling her. « hey. you greeted. she exclaimed your name, commenting how you startled her. – sorry, sorry, you laughed. so, we’re going ice skating? – uh huh. you’re coming too, right? – you know i’m weak against those puppy eyes! you defended yourself. » you snuggled into the crook of her neck, asking her if there was anything you could help her with. to which she replied that you could make sure that alice didn’t forget to wear her gloves and then wait for her outside while she gathered the equipment. you complied, placing a quick kiss on her cheeks before peeling yourself off and went to search for young girl. once you did and made sure she was properly dressed, you corralled her to the shoebox to grab your respective footwears (you also grabbed your figure skates along with your boots from the shoe box) and went to wait for kara outside.
shifting your weight from one foot to the other, you fiddled with your beanie as you watched over alice, who’s playing with the snow. « so… your first time ice skating ever? – uh huh. will you teach me how? i wanna learn how to do cool stuff like you! she hopped excitedly. you smiled, her enthusiasm endearing. – i’m sure you’ll do just fine kid. you’re a fast learner. » you both turned your head towards the front door as you heard it swing open, luther and kara emerging from the house, meaning it’s time to head out.
on your walk there, alice scampered up ahead with luther no too far away behind her, while you and kara walked unhurriedly at the back. « so where are we going exactly? you asked. – luther and i found a frozen lake a few days ago and we thought that we might as well bring alice. she seems really interested in ice skating these past few weeks. – are you sure it’s safe? you wondered worriedly. she nodded her head. – i’m sure. » you hummed and you two walked in silence once more, the soft crunching of snow under your boot the only sound audible. once at your destination, alice quickly plopped down and rushed to put on her ice skates, while the three of you settled down to put your belongings. you casually caught up to her and sat down, clearly not in any hurry to put on your skates which prompted her to rush you (you complied). taking a few moments before standing up, you asked luther if he was planning to join in, to which he declined. you didn’t press further and glanced at kara, nodding your head towards the frigid lake. she told you that she’ll join you briefly so you decided to lead alice unto the ice, calm facade hiding how excited you truly are.
gliding on the ice, you swerved slightly to turn and face the brunette. the girl carefully treaded the ice, wobbling slightly before regaining balance, and looked at you expectantly: « ooh, are you going to teach me how to do tricks? please, please, please? – slow down there kid, you chuckled, you gotta know how to move forwards first. – and when i do, then you’re gonna show me how? she looked up hopefully. » you were sure that alice would pick the sport up quickly, but you were hesitant about teaching her the tricky stuff during her first time: you didn’t want her to potentially hurt herself. you responded with a final « we’ll see. »
with that, you went to teach her the basics: first, learning how to fall correctly to minimise the pain, « because you’re gonna fall at some point kid, everyone does. – even you? – yes, even me, you reassured her. », and how to get back up. next, the correct stance: « bend the knees slightly. lean slightly forwards, don’t put your weight back or you’ll fall on your bum ». it was quite comical how she quickly bent down and shifted her weight forward as soon as those words left your mouth. « oop, not that far forwards. » once satisfied with the position, you beckoned her to start trying to move forwards. seeing that she was a bit hesitant—nervous? we’ve all been there you told her—you reached for her hands and told her that she could hold on to you as you moved around until she felt confident enough to try and go on her own. you slowly started moving, making sure to not scare her off by the speed, while she gets used to the feel. at some point, she started to push forwards on her own and you slowly slipped your hand out of hers, a few metres behind her just in case.
she stopped and simply glided—you didn’t even have to teach her, you thought proudly. though she wobbled slightly, she quickly recovered before turning her head to find yours, wide smile etched on her face: « i can skate!!! she announced, delighted. – you sure can kid! » you caught up to her and taught her how to stop, which she did as easily. « see? told ya’ you’d take it up quickly. just like a duck to water! you hummed approvingly before continuing. now for the last and most important lesson… she watched you attentively. – it’s to have fun! so enjoy your time here, you admitted. »
she dashed away, energetic little sport. judging from the wows and the cheering from your right, she was showing off her new skills. understandably so, she had the right to be proud of herself. you let her have her fun as you found your way to a small space quite a distance away from them: close enough that you could still see them and hear the more raucous cheers—luther—but far enough that you won’t accidentally run into the little girl. you were feeling a tad lazy earlier in the day, but being on the ice felt so right, so natural. it wouldn’t hurt to practice a bit, right?
you took a few moments to warm up before you decided to start the performance. you stood still for a few moments. inhale, exhale. hands in position, feet ready. you’re poised for action. you breathed in slowly, visualising the rink, the people watching and the multiple spotlights on your form. you imagine the music in your head, a rhythm, a tempo, that you could follow as you recounted the choreography. the violin hummed ever so softly, the show started, time to impress the judges and give it your all. you let the ice guide you, the movements flowing out of you instinctively. a series of elegant movements, one move after the other, so fluidly it almost looked easy, serene, passive. step. death drop. you have to focus on the connecting steps as they are the backbone to the artistic quality of your display. spiral. lutz. the wind on your face and against your clothes feels amazing, the speed, everything, it’s exhilarating. a series of quick jumps. you faltered slightly but quickly recovered, moving past it as you focused on the next half of the choreography. step. this is it. you were nearing the end of this dance. you preparers yourself for the coup de grâce. you did it once. you can do it again you tell yourself. building momentum, you take off: triple axel, 31/2 turns. the spin feels so natural, so incredible. 31/2 revolutions. you landed gracefully, letting go of a breath you didn’t realise you were holding in, and smiled wildly. you felt like you were on top of the world. step. a series of flamboyant spins as the violins from the musical piece you chose would swell, before you dipped and kneeled, arms spreaded out, as the majestic swan would extend its wings. brilliant as the creature’s shimmering white feathers. you took quick breaths as you slowly rose up, a huge smile splayed on your face. you really did it, huh?
accomplishments of the day: teach alice how to skate and execute the choreography.
you casually glided your way back to the group and was tackled by an excited alice. « that was so cool!!! can you show me how to do that? pretty please? she grinned, missing teeth and all. – it was very beautiful, kara vouched. you were incredible there, love. you were about to respond modestly when alice brought back your attention. – you promised you’ll teach me a cool trick? – ehhh… i’m not sure… you fumbled. you were still unsure about the whole safety aspect. what if she got injured? your mind could only imagine the worst case scenarios. – it’s fine. kara assured you. we got her the proper skates, a quick glance reveals that the skates did have toepicks, and she has a reliable teacher. – see? kara says it’s fine! – trying to butter me up? you laughed. tell you what, if you can prove to me that you can go around from here to that tree i’ll think about showing you a cool trick. – okay, so just here to that tree right? – going forwards and going backwards 5 times each. and then i’ll show you a cool spin. – okay! she exclaimed jovially, before she zoomed off. »
you both watch her dash back and forth, kara holding on your arm in a death grip—though you didn’t pay any mind. « i wonder why she’s so interested in figure skating all of the sudden… you thought out loud. – you inspire her. your partner revealed. – but why? you chuckled, surprised. i’m not that impressive. – don’t sell yourself short, she scolded. you’re incredibly talented, and she looks up to you. – not as amazing as her mother though! you claimed. » you turned around to face her « so, what about you? any good on the ice? » you started. she shook her head with a sheepish smile. « no, not at all. ».
« oh come on, you can’t be that bad. you smiled. come on, i’ll guide you. you said, as you held both her hands and slided her forwards. »
just like alice was at first, she was hesitant and let herself be carried around. she didn’t however, start stepping on her own, so once you were both at a good distance away from the edge, you carefully took your hands from hers and stepped a few metres back. you didn’t miss the quick panic that etched on her face as she jerked up to stay upright. she swayed gently, seeming somewhat balanced, before you extended an arm towards her.
« ok, now slowly side forwards, push back almost like your pushing on a scooter, see if you can get to me. – i don’t know about this... she admitted. – it’s okay, i’ve got you. i’ll catch you if anything happens ok? she still looks conflicted. – i believe in you, love. i’ve got you. she took in a shaky breath, one she technically didn’t need. – okay… here i go… »
just as quickly she took an uncertain step, it quickly fell apart. she slipped almost immediately and you rushed forwards to try and catch her which caused carnage. you both tumbled down onto the ice, heads were hit against each other and you knew your ass was gonna hurt come next morning. but you’re concerns are currently on the person splayed on top of you: « are you okay? you gasped concernedly, hands coming up to support her back. she giggled as she playfully slapped you. her quips meant that she was perfectly fine. – thanks for getting us into this mess! – you’re too adorable! you cooed, pressing a soft kiss at the top of her head. – you’re really dumb sometimes, you know that? she choked out between laughs. » you answered her with an affirmative « yup! » as you wrapped your arms tighter around her, holding her as you nuzzled nose on hers. her skin was cold and tinted a slight pink due to the cold temperatures, while yours was warm. you both relished in the action however, her pleasant laugh making you feel fuzzy inside.
alice soon rushed over to where you both fell down, concern on her face but was soon relieved when you told her that you were both okay. once back on your feet, alice gave you back your beanie (that must’ve fallen off during the altercation) before she swooshed around between you two, proudly telling you how she did exactly what you asked so can you please teach her a spin now? you complied, keeping your promise.
« alright kid, here’s how you do a two-foot spin, you introduced. if you can do it before school starts again, you get bragging rights for the entire semester. »

he lies there in bed for a while after everyone’s settled down from from the events of getting the email, rereading the contents in question at least a dozen times before he can will himself to put his phone down.
the day had originally gone like normal, the disruption of peace coming in the form of someone mentioning they’d gotten an email ( -- kenta, maybe, if he searches his thoughts hard enough to find an answer, followed closely by daniel rushing into the room ) and with nerves erecting instantaneously, minhyun takes a breath before looking towards his own phone.
the first read is more eyes casually finding themselves in a frantic search for the key words -- an invitation outlining he’s made the callback cut, an address attached and formal details lingering in between the main points of the email. his head hits the back of the couch silently, and he closes his eyes.
he breathes.
conversations around him eventually fall into a lull as they break off into tiny groups, scattering as they discuss the necessary details for the big day, excitement in the air. minhyun checks in and out of the conversation, finding himself a little lost but stubborn enough not to let it seep through into his expression. he keeps his answers light and goes about his day.
then, he tucks himself into bed, bidding kenta a goodnight, before turning his back on the other boy and proceeding to open up the very email he’s been lamenting in his head all day.
oh god, what did he sign himself up for?
a minor freak out later, not that anyone in the share-house would really know considering it’s all happening internally in the middle of the night, because clearly minhyun never quite learned the value of expressing your emotions and having a healthy venting system going -- and so, when woojin asks him if he knows what he’s doing, he simply shakes his head the first time and then says i’m working on it anytime after that.
yeah, definitely.
it’s definitely not as if he whips something together the day before, practice running into early morning, relying on choreography he did in past and knew his body was still comfortably familiar with. it’s times like these he’s thankful to his little sister, that he had been coerced into attending dance lessons for however short a time it may be in comparison to other trainees, appreciating the experience exponentially simply so he wouldn’t necessarily embarrass himself. it takes a few full runs for his mind to remember the way his limbs are supposed to be working, but a few hours in and breathless, minhyun can stay with some semblance of confidence maybe he’s anticipating the big day.
well, more so at the prospect of getting it done and over with, but he deems the thought is what counts.
daniel stays over the night before so they can all go together, and minhyun’s up making breakfast earlier than he expected to, despite how he has to rub at his eyes for a while when he wakes just to will himself to open them. once he’s up, the butterflies ever present in his lungs make sure their presence is acknowledged, and he almost considers skipping out on the meal.
almost being the keyword, but he knows the importance of a good balanced meal in the morning and so he eats, pushing the same on the others through insisting remarks and a bit of force where necessary. he smiles to himself at the sight of the group together, a sense of love ever present in the way his eyes crinkle just the slightest, before he shifts his attention back to his plate.
the rest of the morning and the time after they’re finally past check-ins and inside the venue almost flies by, minhyun too busy fretting over small details for the others and making sure everything was ready for his own performance by running through things a couple dozen times in his mind. he helps sungwoon carry in his keyboard, amused at the prospect of coming to the other’s aid though he doesn’t make any remarks about it, almost wordless thanks to nerves. his heart feels like it’ll never stop racing, and after a while, he almost gets used to it.
they’re all dressed in empty enigma shirts, making some sort of combined statement and he can’t particularly remember who brought up the idea but he wears it proud -- just a shirt, he’ll remind himself later, a little embarrassed, but the point stands.
he waits for the other boys to sit first before following suit, finding comfort having a seat on one of their ends, having the ability to look over and see them all at once. maybe it’s the side of him that served as empty enigma’s manager for as long as he did, or maybe it’s just a him thing overall, but he smiles to himself as the others chatter among themselves and feels contentment stirring inside him. he may not say it now, maybe not anytime soon when words are so difficult to filter through and process but the appreciation he holds for his found family, his band of misfits -- he can’t even begin to phrase it all into words.
instead, he turns towards the front and watches as others start filtering in, eyes beginning to analyze the competition without him really meaning to. it feels like an automatic response, and overall, a very him thing to do when he’ll consider it later while looking back on the day.
eventually his phone buzzes and he sees the text from suwoong pop onto the screen as he slides it open, and for a moment he stares at it before looking back up towards the front. ah, yes. suwoong. how naive of him to forget the other was apart of the process, especially when he was sure to be a sight to behold in the auditions, no, more the entire show.
his phone then buzzes thrice consecutively, and minhyun only sighs before unlocking it to respond, question prompted about the location of his seat. minhyun closes his eyes to bask in the quiet murmurs of the room and then like clockwork, the quiet is shattering as if infiltrated by an incoming tsunami, and he opens his eyes to offer suwoong a wry attempt at a grin.
time passes with idle conversations and then a focus towards the beginning of the call-backs. soon after begin the nervous jitters, crawling up his skin and he scratches his arms, his neck, his cheek from time to time, the phantom sensations never quite leaving him, increasing once the judges are announced. he’s one to operate with a sheet of iron over his expression, but he blinks in minor shock, later supposing it’s not too out there -- the contestants would be their investments in the future, some talents they’d be scouting at the end of the program. despite the pressure, minhyun finds his jitters translating into excitement, his attention kept towards the stage.
daniel goes up first, and minhyun offers a quick pat before he can making his way down, the good luck almost lost in his bout of nerves before finally making it past his lips. he shifts into the seat beside sungwoon when the other’s gone, and like clock-work, without really meaning to every time he swears, his grip becomes interlocked with the others as they stare at the stage collectively. he tries his best to pay attention through the whole thing, beaming proudly though with the first of them gone, minhyun feels the presence of ticking clock grow exponentially. at some point, he blanks out. when daniel returns, he slides back into his own seat as everyone commences the quiet cheers, and minhyun offers a heartwarming good job whispered into the air once the other sits.
“hwang minhyun!” katie lee calls out the moment he’s done with the congratulations, and minhyun’s heart immediately jumps into his throat. daniel pats his knee before he can stand, the other boys offering a thumb up and some verbal good lucks but it’s the collective smiles that stick with him as he makes his way to the makeshift stage.
taking a few deep breathes on his way up, he slides on what he deems to be a charming smile and quickly introduces himself. “hello, i’m hwang minhyun, and i hope everyone remembers to recycle on the daily.” he doesn’t know why he says that, actually fails to remember much of the beginning when he looks back on the day later, but he knows the rest of the pleasantries go as well as they can before he’s waiting for the music to begin. the number of people should add to his nerves, as he finally stands before them all, but the stage does what it always does -- spotlight in his eyes, he inhales sharply and lets the rest of the world seep into the back of his thoughts.
twenty four karat magic in the air
the performance is meant to start off a little acoustic style, the backtrack essentially just his own ad-libs for his performance, timed perfectly as he went along at the pace he’d practiced. his voice is loud as he sings the final note in the line, side of his mouth perking up as he closes his eyes for a moment.
head to toe so player look out uh
his only plan for the beginning is to rely on his subtle charm and eye contact to start off his segment of time. it’s a plan he’d been hesitant on doing but the idea bugs him for some time before he’d finally given in, practicing and watching himself perform it countless times as his slightly accented english stabilizes as he gets a grip on his intentions. his version is a little more focused on actually vocalizing the verse more so than the original did, taking the chance to show off his singing.
pop pop, it's show time (show time) show time (show time) guess who's back again? oh they don't know? (go on tell 'em) oh they don't know? (go on tell 'em) i bet they know soon as we walk in (showin' up) wearing cuban links (ya) designer minks (ya) inglewood's finest shoes (whoop, whoop) don't look too hard might hurt ya'self known to give the color red the blues
despite his growing confidence as he goes on, he has yet to do much outside of exerting the image of a man that knows his lines and has the confidence to perform them, switching his gaze from being planted on the judges themselves and the audience at large, hoping to pull in the entire room into the piece that would come together to form the memory known as “minhyun’s attempt at a successful mga callback performance.” a long title -- it can use some work.
oh shoot, i'm a dangerous man with some money in my pocket (keep up) so many pretty girls around me and they waking up the rocket (keep up) why you mad, fix ya face, ain't my fault y'all be jocking (keep up)
at the pretty girls line, he fixes his gaze on katie lee and baek jiyoung for a moment, shooting finger hearts to the panel, then finishing off the verse. at that, the backtrack makes a faltering noise, distorting at the next intended players only, come on, and he sees scattered looks directed his way though it’s a well-known technique really. minhyun takes it as a cue to run a hand through his hair casually, growing grin visible as the track plays finally leaves the acoustic back track, picking up where he’d left off vocally only a moment prior. as the music switches to the original, bruno mars’ voice echoing through the room, his body reacts to the music automatically.
just put your pinky rings up to the moon girls, what y'all trying to do? (tell me what y'all trying to do) twenty four karat magic in the air head to toe so player (hands up!)
his mind is empty as he dances, more focused on the music than anything else, not much active thought needed to deliver his moves. there’s a casual grin, tinted with a subtle cockiness only present when he performs, channelling a bit of his reign persona to exert the intended effect of a man put together, who knows what he’s doing. he knows the moves well, more than anything else in the moment in fact, and a voice deep within his conscious tells him it’s clear with the confidence in his steps. (not that he’d tell anyone else that, finding blissful ignorance a safer home to settle within -- i did okay, he’ll tell anyone that asks and leave it at that).
put your pinky rings up to the moon girls, what y'all trying to do? (do) twenty four karat magic in the air head to toe so player (twenty four karat) uh, look out
he falls into a bow almost immediately, breathing heavy as he tries to stabilize but almost glowing with satisfaction. the warmth covers every inch of him and he runs a hand through his hair once more before bidding his thank you’s.

Chase sat at the bar, his second glass of whiskey in his hand. He didnt want to go home, JJ and Jackie would want him to talk. And he just didnt feel like talking now. Itd been so long since she left it seemed...but seeing her today, across the street, holding hands with some guy theyd gone to school with, it seemed she was his just yesterday.
"Oh suck it up. She didn't want you. Youre here drowning your sorrows, and shes onto the next dick..deal with it" he thought to himself, draining the glass and waving for another.
"Ya know. Thats the cheap crap. You really wanna get blasted theres better stuff.." The bartender said "Yeah well. Im just drinking. Not getting crazy."
His phone buzzed and he looked down, laughing to himself at the meme Jack had sent him. Then a text came through from Alison She was Jacks friend that had become close with the Septic guys over the last few years. Based in Texas in the US they didnt see her in person much, but Chase and her communicated almost daily
A:Heyyyy. Whats up?
C: *picture he took of Stacey and her boy toy* Thats a guy we went to school with 😑. They were 'friends'
A: Dude. Thats a downgrade. Although she was never good enough for you anyway. Only good thing was the kiddos
C:yeah. It still hurts like hell though.... I need to run away. Get out of here. Theyre going to her moms for a month or so for school holidays and i dont want to be here.
A:well. You could always come here? My Dad and step mom are leaving so i have my cabin on the ranch plus the main house to myself for like a month. You should come!
Chase sat and pondered this. Him go to Texas? With horses and a lake and a bunch of land to explore with fourwheelers....that sounded like heaven
C: Are you for real? Because i could seriously use that lol
The phone rang with Alisons ringtone "Hello?"
Alison: Hell yes im serious! Itd help me out because i don't really want to be by myself out here that long. And you sound like you could use it. Seriously. Fly in, ill come get you and we can tear some shit up
Chase laughed 'alright. Be careful what you ask for Allycat"
Her laugh echoed across the line "Ohhh im shaking Mr Brody. Figure out a flight and let me know!"
Chase told her ok and hung up with her, immediately finding a flight that left in a couple of days "I am outta here" he said
************* 'Wait. So youre going for a month??' Jackie said in shock , 'Just like that??' He was standing in the bedroom door watching Chase pack. He had to be at the airport in about 2 hours
"Yeah. I need to get outta my head and Ali offered. So Im going. I think it'll do me some good. She has a computer and Stacey said i could skype the kids, they wont be in town anyway... I just need this Jackie" The hero stared at him knowingly and then nodded 'ok. Just be careful.... Hey..She ever say anything to you about her going MIA a while back?'. Chase shook his head. Thats one thing he hoped to get out of her. Even Jack had tried to get her to tell him where she'd been, but no dice. 'Hm. Ok. Well, let us know when you get there man...'
Chase zipped his suitcase and grab his backpack and slung it over his shoulder. 'I will bro. Thanks for understanding' he hugged his brother hard and then grabbed the suitcase and left.
******* Chase sat in the passenger seat of the truck, still speechless at Alison's appearance. He was expecting the Alison hed seen two years ago; but shed been training and gained muscle and holy hell. She was dressed in cutoff red shorts and a sleeveless black shirt. When she ran up to him at the airport hed almost stepped on his own bottom jaw. Her auburn hair gleamed in the sun as she talked about everything she had planned for this weekend
"Uh...chase..you ok? Awful quiet there bud" she looked over at him. Chase shook his head to clear his brain 'yeah. Yeah im good.... Hey. You look incredible!"
Alisons face flushed 'aw. Thanks' she laughed. "So. Here we are" she pulled the truck up to a gate and punched in a code. As she drove onto the ranch Chase stared out the window.
'Holy hell Alison. This is gorgeous.' They drove for another fifteen minutes, passed the huge main house and pulled up to a log cabin.
'Alright. Let's go in.' She grinned and stepped out of the truck. Chase smiled and followed her. She walked up the steps and unlocked the door. As Chase walked in he laughed. A Sam pillow and Pink Mustache pillow decorated the couch on either end.
'Really Alison?' He said, picking up Septiceye Sam "Hey! Yes really!' She said laughing. 'Just because im friends with them doesnt mean im not going to buy their shit!' He shook his head, all awkwardness gone.
There was the Alison he knew, a goofball with an affinity for Markiplier and Jacksepticeye.
She walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge, pulling some steaks out. 'You hungry?' Chase nodded. 'Hell yes, ive been needin some of your cooking!' He said, his smile lighting his face. 'You know. Im gonna have to teach you how to cook Mr Brody.' She grinned at him. And he looked at her wide eyed "um..alison. You sure you wanna do that?' "Um. Yes" she said. Grinning at him. 'First lesson..music!' She pulled up an app on her phone and music began drifting through the room. Chase shook his head. Yep. Still Alison
****** Chase watched as Alison danced in place as she cut up some vegtables and potatoes. She was barefoot, singing along to the beginning notes of 'Small Town Boy' by Dustin Lynch, he smiled as he stood up from the barstool he was sitting on... Vegatables could wait He walked up behind her and took the knife from her hand, she turned to him 'what are you-?' Chase grabbed her hand and pulled her to the open kitchen floor and started dancing with her. She threw her head back and laughed as they swayed and Chase sang along
* I'm a dirt road in the headlights I'm a mama's boy, I'm a fist fight Kinda county line, kinda cold beer Little hat down, little John Deere I kinda give a damn I kinda don't care You see that girl standing right there She loves a small town boy like me She's my ride or die baby She's my cool, she's my crazy She's my laid back in the front seat She's my with me to the end girl My turn-it-up-to ten girl....* Alison laughed and sang with him. She was in trouble if her stomach and heart were going to continue playing Zoo escape with him here. Shed been friends with the guys a while. But this was out of left field. She hadnt expected her heart to try to beat its way out when she saw him standing there at the airport. His green hair had been replaced by a natural brown and his eyes shone as blue as ever. When he saw her and smiled as she started to run toward him for a hug, shed almost fallen over. This would be a very interesting visit.
*********** They were sitting on the back porch after dinner. Chase was watching Alison animatedly talk about training with some of the guys in her Dad's work, laughing when she knocked over her water glass when her hands flew into it 'Oh shit!' Alison cried out. Then she just started laughing and Chase couldnt help but laugh along with her as he went inside the sliding glass door to the kitchen and grabbed a towel and handed it to her. She mopped up the mess and then sat back down, still giggling.
'Well. Still gracefull as ever i see Miss Calaway' Chase said teasingly She stuck her tongue out laughing 'oh fuck off Mr Brody' They laughed and then sat in silence, watching the lake.
'So.' Alison said quietly 'how are you...really?'
Chase smiled at her 'you know.... Earlier this week i was in hell. Seeing her with him opened old wounds...but being here now i feel a little better. Like i can breathe. It hurts still. But i can breathe' Alison nodded and reached over and squeezed his hand 'im really glad you came. I needed some company...'
She dropped her hands to her lap and stared out at the water. The energy around them shifted and Chase could sense something hed been feeling all evening. Something was weighing heavy on her. 'Alison....whats going on? You never told me what happened that two week span you quit replying to anyone..and ive left it alone this long but.. i can tell now sitting here it wasnt a case of being too busy with fun stuff to look at your phone' Alison looked down, a mixture of sadness and guilt shadowing her face. He was talking about last year. Even Jack had tried to get out of her where shed been...but she hadnt told a soul. Only her family knew. Tears welled in her eyes... that had been during a bad time for Chase...she remembered the pain in the drunk texts from him that shed read when she got the phone back...
She stood and walked over to the railing. Trying not to cry and failing 'Hey...alison im sorry. I didnt mean to-..' Chase stood and walked up beside her and put an arm around her shoulders. She turned to face him and burying her face in his chest, silent tears rolling down her face for a moment. Then she took a deep breath, stepped back and wiped her face 'Sorry...its just... I never apologized for not being there for you. I read those texts a million times after the fact and... Im so sorry Chase'
Chase stared at her shocked 'thats whats upsetting you? Alison, i send angsty texts to my brothers every time im freakin drunk' he laughed. "You dont need to apologize. It was a bad point but nothing for you to feel guilty for being absent for... But i would like to know where you were. We all know when you reappeared you were different." Alison stared into his eyes, hed had never noticed how green they were. She was searching...but for what? 'Chase.... Not even Jack knows what happened...' She took a deep breath '....i was in the hospital.' Chases mouth dropped open in shock 'What?! Why???'
She stared at her feet and was quiet for a minute. 'Do you remember Chris?' She asked. Chase grimaced at the name, he remembered Chris. He also remembered the broken nose and black eye he gave him a couple years back when he saw him shove Alison to the ground "Yeah. Your boyfriend that no one liked?' She nodded 'yeah. That one.... God i shouldve listened to yall. ' Chase put his hand under her chin and lifted her gaze to his and spoke softly 'what did he do ali?' She swallowed hard. 'Short version? Got mad that i wanted to leave the country to come see yall.... Tied me up and used me as a punching bag for 3 days....'
Chases eyes widened in horror 'what the fuck....howd you get away???' She snorted 'my Dad came to find me.... Imagine for yourself how pretty that was' Chase knew it hadnt been.
Her father was famous for being called The Undertaker. Almost seven feet tall and 300lbs...and Alison was his little girl. His first daughter. His pride... Oh lord that couldnt have been good....
'So' she continued 'i was in the hospital for a good while... Actually the first time i texted you i was still there for another week.... ' Chase pulled her into a hug 'Ali im so so sorry..my God if i had known...' Alison laughed 'if you had known you wouldve been deported and arrested for murder...no i didnt want anyone knowing. Im the one who stayed when yall told me to leave. I'm the idiot.' Chase leaned back, arms still around her. 'No! Its not your fault. I dont care what we told you to do. You want to see the good in people. You want to believe everyone is good and thats an amazing trait. You should never think thats stupid' She smiled and leaned into his chest savoring the warmth and safety.
Later, after they had said goodnight and gone to their rooms, Chase lay there awake. He could still feel her head on his shoulder, feel the warmth from her, and his heart skipped. "What the hell is going on ??' He hadnt felt that since high school...that first skip of the heart when you find someone.... 'Oh grow up Brody. Shes your best friend and doesnt need your damaged ass complicating her life..' Little did he know she was in the room at the opposite end of the hall thinking along the same lines...
****** A week had gone by, they danced around the flirtation and the obvious tension that lay under their banter. The day before it had rained, creating mud puddles everywhere. Now it was sunny and muggy out. Alison excitedly threw a pair of 4-wheeler keys to Chase and grinned as she pulled her ponytail through the back of the hat she was wearing. Chase watched as she bounded down the front steps and followed suit. They were both in jeans. The day before Chase had bought a cheap pair of boots he could get muddy. They were heavy but at least it wasnt his sneakers. They headed down the path between Alison's and the main house. Chase studied her as they walked. He hadnt been as brave since the first night. He wanted to say something....anything. But he wasnt sure where to start. 'You good ?' Alison stopped walking and looked at him, his face flushed slightly "Yeah, im good. Ready to tear up the mud' Alison laughed 'well the shed is right over here. I keep mine here since its closer to my place' They rounded the bend in the path and came upon the metal shed. She unlocked the door and walked in, pulling the tarp off the two four-wheelers. She threw a michevious grin at Chase as she climbed on hers "You ready to get dirty?' She laughed Chase grinned 'Hell yeah!' He climbed on his and they roared to life, Alison shot out of the building and took off, he threw his head back laughing and started after her
****** After about an hour or two of flying through mud and water puddles, they were sitting on the edge of the lake on a blanket Alison had laid out under the big umbrella. Chase had his shirt off as it was wet and muddy. He looked over at her and couldnt help but laugh. She had mud streaked down her arms and some on her nose.. The only part that wasnt spotted was her legs. Shed taken off the jeans and was in her swim shorts that had been under them.
'What?!' She said
'Youre a little...uh...dirty there girl' She laughed 'you should see yourself, your floofy hairdo aint cuttin it kid' she said as she reached over and messed up his hair, dirt falling out 'Hey!' Chase cried and grabbed her hand as he chuckled 'you leave my hair alone. Youre just jealous' Alison laughed and rolled her eyes. 'Yeah. Ok' They sat next to each other in silence, her knees pulled up and arms wrapped around them. She leaned against his side and looked like she was ready to fall asleep on his shoulder. Chase scooted over to the far side of the blanket and laid back, then pulled her down so her head rested on his chest and an arm was around her. His pulse raced and she easily fit in his arm and curled against him.
She sighed contentedly 'hey Chase... Anytime i need to lay with someone im gonna find you. Because youre really comfortable' she said giggling. He laughed 'ok. But youll have to come across the pond a lot' 'Hmm' she said thoughtfully 'ok. Im good with that. Ill come over there for some Brody cuddles' He squeezed her and smiled. 'Hey....Ali?'
'Yeah?' She shifted her head so she could look up at him. Her heart raced as she caught his eyes. Shed been having trouble concentrating on anything since he took his shirt off and this wasnt any easier.
'What are we avoiding here?' He asked... He hadnt meant to be so blunt but it just kind of came out that way. 'I mean. We're good and normal and then other times its so freaking awkward..i dont get it' 'I-.' Alison didnt really have an answer for that. She knew what she thought she was avoiding. But she wasnt 100% sure. 'I dont know.. I mean... I think its obvious theres something to talk about. But neither of us wants to say it'
Chase stared into her green eyes intently 'Well if you want to say what i want to say, then fuck this silence. Tell me'
Alison sat up and looked the other way and he followed. 'Its not just that easy for me Chase.... I dont know what you want...i dont know what im supposed to do..i dont know wh-'.. '
He grabbed her chin and turned her face towards his 'what i want is for you to shut up and kiss me...what youre supposed to do is stop rambling and let me show you'
With that he pressed his mouth to hers and kissed her. Slowly at first and then harder. She sat up on her knees and wrapped her arms around his neck as she kissed him back. They pulled away breathless and stared at each other.
'Now alison' he said, his voice husky "Whyd you wait so long to do that?' He grinned and pulled her to him again and kissing her deeper, laying back, her laying halfway across his chest. After a moment she pulled away and laid her head down on him and laughed 'Holy crap' He laughed out loud, 'yeah... Thats one way of putting it' He kissed the top of her head and wrapped her in his arm, they both drifted off..
****** It was a month and a half later. Chase stood by the front door. Nervous. He didnt want to leave. They hadnt been what youd call official..neither of them labled it . Sure they had held hands, slow danced with each other, kissed and gotten close..but it wasnt like *that* was it?... And now he was going home. He wasnt supposed to feel this way. His heart wasnt supposed to ache like this....
Alison stood in her room making sure she had her keys and phone...stalling. "What the hell...why is this so damn hard. Hes my best friend....a great kisser...but my best friend! Its not supposed to be like this' she thought to herself. Walking out she caught his eyes and saw her sadness reflected there
'Are you ready to go?' She inquired, trying to sound happy
"....you want the truth or the answer thatll make you feel better?' He chuckled.
'Chase...' She stood by him and grabbed his hand... 'I know, i know. We live a million miles from each other... I just didnt think it would-' 'Hurt this much?' She said, staring up at him He sighed and wrapped an arm around her, pulling her in and kissing the top of her head. 'Yeah' She opened the door and they walked out to the truck.
******** 'Seriously. Come out sometime, the boys and me will show you a good time' Chase said Alison smiled at him ' Definitely...ill miss you. Thank you for coming. I had a blast'
Chase smiled and her 'And stop standing so far away.' He grabbed her hand and pulled her close 'its harder to kiss you goodbye from over there....if thats okay.... Just one last time?' She smiled and nodded as a blush crept to her cheeks he leaned down and kissed her, both of them holding on longer than they intended. 'Alison...dont be a stranger' he said. Hugging her one last time and picking up his bags. 'I..i wont Chase. Tell everyone i said hi'
She waved goodbye and watched him walk toward his gate, then turned and headed for her truck. When she got inside she let go of her control and cried. The tears didnt stop until she was back to her place. She walked into the room Chase had been staying in and found one of his worn shirts folded on the bed with a note and a small bottle of cologne. She smiled and cried a little reading it
'I know its not the same as falling asleep on me. But this is the cologne i use, you can wear the shirt or use it as a pillow case... Ill miss you' She laid down on the bed and could still smell him as she drifted to sleep
******** 'Dude. You were supposed to go over there to get happier. Now youre just more mopey. What the hell happened?' Jackie asked Chase
They were in the living room, Chase sprawled on the couch. It had been almost two weeks since he came home 'Jackie. Just leave it alone man. Ok? I dont want to talk about it'
'Chase, you need to talk about it. I havent seen you like this ever. When Stacy left you cried and drank and talked about it... You dont even drink anymore. You just sit and watch tv or sleep' Jackie said, worry coating his words.
Chase sat up 'look man. Im an idiot and i caught feelings at the wrong time and the wrong place. Ok? And it hurts because i cant be where i need to be and where i want to be at the same time! I dont drink because then i dream about her and....'
His words drifted off Jackie came to sit by him and put an arm over his shoulder ' you always dream about Stacy though. I thought the sleeping pills helped with that'
Chase put his head in his hands 'Bro. This isnt about Stacy. I never thought id say this but i think this hurts worse'
Jackie was shocked. He couldnt believe what had just come out of his brothers mouth 'Then...who? And what did they do that was so bad???'
Chase shook his head 'thats just it. Nothing bad. It was all amazing... But.. Damnit man. I just wish it wasnt so fucking far, you know?' Jackie thought for a minute and his eyes widened and mouth dropped as he caught on
'Holy shit you mean Alison???' Chase's head shot up 'Jackie if you tell anyone so help me ill strangle you' Jackie put his hands up 'No no. I wont..but..what happened?' Chase laughed 'nothing like that... We just kissed and cuddled a lot and... I really think i fell for her man and i dont know how to process it... I feel like I'm losing my mind.' Then he opened up and told Jackie everything about the trip. His brother just sat and listened.
*************** Two weeks later...
'Alison!' Jack ran over to her, shed begged him to pick her up at the airport but hadnt wanted anyone to know. Hed been happy to oblige. Confused. But happy
'Jack!' She ran over to him and hugged him hard. Shed missed this goofball
'Ok so are you going to tell me whats going on?' Jack said as they grabbed her bags and walked outside to where the Uber was waiting for them
' um.... Its a little hard to explain. But.. I just had to come ok? Im actually meeting my Dad tomorrow. Theyre here because of a movie shoot. We are all staying a month or so.'
Jack shook his head 'i know when youre lying. Theres something youre not tellin me Ali' She looked at him. Knowing hed either laugh or help her... Well only one way to find out
'Jack....when Chase stayed with me for that month... We..I.... I fell for him ok? And i think he feels the same way. And this last month has been hell because i cant stop thinking about him. I know it sounds crazy but i had to come see him, and yall. ' it came out in a rush.
Jacks mouth dropped open in shock. 'You mean...youre the reason Chase has been so mopey? Thank God i thought he was on about Stacy again' and he laughed 'So. Wanna suprise him?' His smile conspiratorial Alison grinned. She shouldve known she could count on him.
*********** 'Well why do i need to go Jack? Why dont you?' Chase whined into the phone 'i dont feel like talking to anyone about filming man. I dont have it in me' 'Chase. Youre going. Trust me. Just meet the agent at the park. Theyll be by the river. Itll be a good opportunity for you man' Jack said on the other end of the line, trying to keep from laughing. 'And what about the others? Jackie and everyone left the house today. They said they were staying with you tonight because you were filming some stuff. Why cant i help?' Chase questioned 'Look Chase. I need you to do this for me. Ok? Please bro?' Chase rolled his eyes 'fine. But this better be a good meeting' Jack hung up the phone and laughed 'oh trust me Brody. Youll love it' he said to himself. Shooting alison a text. 'Now we wait'
At the house Chase threw the phone. He wanted to be mad but he knew Jack was just worried. Hed been holed up in his room since he came back, hadnt touched his skateboard in a month, hadnt even looked at his PS4.. All he could do was go through the photos from his trip. Hed talked to Alison on facetime and she seemed to be happy, was training and riding horses. She had sent him phtos of her and her Dad and little sisters... He felt like he was lying to her. He said he was okay, just more tired...but the reality was he wanted to beg her to come to him. He wanted to tell her he thought he loved her-- but he just kept a smile on his face because as long as she was happy, thats all that mattered
****** Later that night Alison sat on the bench. Nervously playing with the hem of her dress she had bought that morning. He should be here any minute.... What if he was mad...what if he didn't want her here? What if.... She recieved a text from Jack
J:Hes there.
Her heart pounded. Now what? She sat and waited...hearing footsteps
* Chase could see someone on the bench by the water and headed that way. As he walked his eyes focused on the figure. Their hair was an auburn color... That thought made his heart ache as he remembered brushing Alisons from her face... He got close enough to the bench and the figure stood and turned toward him. His heart jumped and he almost fell down 'Al-alison?' He whispered. Not believing what he was seeing. 'Chase..' She said softly. Her face broke into a smile as tears filled her eyes. She ran to him and he embraced her. He finally let go and looked down at her grabbing her face with both hands "ali what the hell are you doing here?!' Tears rolled from her eyes 'Chase....i couldnt stay away anymore. Im sorry...i know i shouldve told you but i didnt know if you wanted me here and-' her words were cut off as he kissed her. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back. When they pulled back he looked at her for a long minute and then spoke as he wiped her tears 'Dont ever apologize for making me this happy...ever. Of course i want you here. Its been hell just talking to you on FaceTime and not being able to say what im thinking. My God Alison i missed you more than i thought possible' She smiled and kissed his cheek and hugged him again. Savoring the feel of his arms around her
'Cmon. Lets go talk' he said pulling out his phone to call a ride 'I got it' she said grinning 'My dad loaned me a driver for my trip' she called someone and said whered they be. As they walked to the road Chase saw a black limo waiting and laughed 'Well. That beats an Uber'
As they rode he just stared at her. She was looking out the window. His heart beat faster. She came....she missed him so much that she came all the way here. He smiled to himself and then shot Jack a text
C:'Youre an ass for letting me walk into that unwarned....but thank you man'
J:no thanks needed. I did it for both of you. You both deserve smiles on your faces man. Now put the phone down... Also Jackie said to tell you 'stay in your own room' 😂
Chase laughed out loud and covered his face. He was going to have to smack him Alison looked over 'whats so funny?' She reached for the phone and snatched it before Chase could stop her 'alison i wouldn-' he warned laughing 'Oh my god.... Im gonna have to smack him when i see him' she said laughing as her face turned red. They both giggled and Chase grabbed the phone and turned it off after sending 'tell him i said ..' Followed by a couple of middle finger emojis
***** They walked into the house and Chase locked the front door before grabbing Alisons hand and kissing her again. He couldnt believe she was here. Alison leaned into him and kissed him back and then said smiling 'i cant believe im standing here' Chase laughed 'i cant either! I mean...why would you come all this way??' Alison locked eyes with him. 'Because... I never knew i could miss someone so much Chase. Honestly it was driving me nuts. I got tired of having the pictures from your trip and FaceTime with fake 'hey buddy' bullshit..... But i wanted to say it to your face.
Chase nodded. He knew exactly what she meant.
** Alison had been there a week and couldnt get over the fact that she was with him. Chase was sprawled out on the other side of the king sized bed and snoring. They had both decided to stay in the hotel room she had reserved for her time here. Chase wasnt used to such a huge bed and Alison laughed thinking back to his face when he first laid on it. She laid her book down and reached over, brushing his hair back and smiling. He stirred and blinked at her sleepily "Ali-- you ok babe?" Her heart jumped at that name. She felt a blush spreading as he sat up and his bare chest became visable. "Yeah- yeah. Was just admiring how cute you were when you sleep" He chuckled and ran his fingers through his hair "what. Are you saying im not cute when im awake? " "Well....when youre asleep youre much quieter" she said laughing. His mouth opened in fake offense and then he grinned mischeviously "Oh. Okay.." He rolled over and caught her and tickled her and she laughed and squealed. 'Chase! Chase! Okay i give i give!!" He stopped and looked down at her as he laid across her and laughed 'youre pretty cute yourself Alleycat " he kissed the tip of her nose and she craned her mouth up. He smiled and leaned down to kiss her and she wrapped her arms around him. He still wasnt used to the sparks that went through his brain with her. That first night hed stayed with her they... Caught up.. quickly. He was still addicted to the taste and feel of her even after as many times hed experienced her. "Ali-" he whispered as he placed his forehead to hers "Yeah Chase?" "I...i think... This is gonna sounds insane' he laughed She pushed him up so she could look in his eyes "Baby...what?" Chase stared into her green eyes. Never having been more sure of what he was about to say...knowing if he didnt hed never sleep "Alison..... I love you...and i know thats crazy. I never thought id ever say that to anyone with this feeling behind it after her....but honestly if she walked up to me right now and asked me to come home...id say no. Youve made me feel whole. You make me the man i want to be. Even my kids when i saw them yesterday asked why i was so happy... ' He stopped and grinned sheepishly "i kinda talked about you a little...they want to meet you. I told them maybe in a couple of weeks..but thats up to you..Stacy was cool with it if you are..' She stared at him, not knowing what to say. A smile broke across her face and her eyes misted over "Chase...id love to meet them..." She pulled him to her and kissed him before saying quietly 'and Mr Brody...you should know. I love you too.." *****

Rodeo and Juliet
Here is my play by play reaction to this movie.
1. So there is a girl named Juliet and she is moving to her grandfather’s ranch with her mom after his death.
2. She is pissed that she has to move, but then she meets this horse, Rodeo, apparently she had riding lessons in NYC but can’t saddle a horse.
3. Seriously, she just like throws it in the air with the strength of a 9 month old infant.
4. She makes friends with Nan, like who the fuck names their kid Nan? Anyway, she is the only black person in the whole town so far.
5. Nan takes her to a barn dance and introduces her little brother, so two black people so far. (this movie does not seem to accurately represent the beautiful diversity of our nation)
6. Some mean girls approach Nan and Juliet. They claim that Juliet’s outfit looks like, “a clearance rack at Chicos”.
7. Juliet is wearing like a black leather jacket and black jeans and black heels, I mean they aren’t Prada but the outfit isn’t bad.
8. Anyway, Juliet comes back with “I’ll let Lana del Rey know you said that next time I’m backstage at one of her concerts like last weekend” and, “Oh my mom’s friend Calvin designed this outfit, Calvin Klein.”
9. Super cringey so far and way too detailed for a comeback.
10. Some country boy approaches Juliet and she dips out of the way for another cowboy and pretends he is her date, this movie is so cliche so obviously they fall for each other. Not actually sure what his name is.
11. Meanwhile, Mom is at judge’s office looking for a will or statement entitling her to the ranch meanwhile some Billy Ray knock off comes in saying he has paper that entitles him to half of the ranch. Judge said it was never official.
12. We find out his name is Hugh and he was the grandpa’s right hand man.
13. A lot has happened and I cannot really follow but I guess the mom is now employed at the Judge’s office and is helping look for a will.
14. Juliet’s mom says to stay away from Loverboy since he is Hugh’s nephew and therefore the enemy.
15. Oh and btw Mom tells Juliet they have to sell the horse.
16. Juliet throws a fit and then learns of a barrel racing competition and thinks that if she and Rodeo win that she can’t sell him or the ranch.
17. Loverboy offers to teach her and says that she knows he’ll do anything for her, so their relationship is going hella fast, like it has only been 2 days.
18. Since Juliet is supposed to stay away from them she convinces her mom to let her ride Rodeo at Nan’s ranch
19. I suspect she’ll be riding Loverboy too, if ya catch my drift ;)
20. Training montage and searching for document montage begins.
21. Hugh and Loverboy have the same haircut and hat, little freaky.
22. Loverboy has a really pointy chin
23. Also horse is pretty little/scrawny for being a barrel racing horse
24. I have been informed by Ari (roommate) that Loverboy’s name is Monty.
25. So Juliet has been practicing for like 2 days and she’s already a god at the game
26. Definitely a hallmark movie due to the nature and quick, hard to follow plot and lack of diversity.
27. Wait! There are two more black people, a receptionist at the county clerks office and a dude in line. Ari: “still no asian people!”
28. Everyone drives really big, really shiny trucks
29. So some random dude with a weird beard shows up while mom is sweeping the driveway.
30. His name is bill Atterbury and he is looking for the grandpa, mom says he is not here and fails to mention that he is dead.
31. Okay now she mentions it all dramatic like.
32. Anyway, homeboy wants to buy the horse.
33. Oh and apparently mom is trying to get him to buy the land too.
34. This convo is going down like the opening to a cheesy 80′s porno (at least I am assuming so)
35. Ooh she invited him in for some lemonade..... and probably some sex too.
36. JK it is just really cheesy to invite a stranger in for lemonade.
37. The low visual quality and cheesy movie tropes make me honestly question if this is a hallmark movie or a bad 80′s porn.
38. Juliet is wearing some black off the shoulder shirt with big white lettering that says NYC with neon paint splatters.
39. It looks like it was purchased anywhere but NY, probably the juniors section of a SEARS department store.
40. Her hair keeps changing colors from dark brown to auburn, now she has a blonde streak in it.
41. Okay mom is now explaining her childhood in this small town.
42. Her mom died when she was 10 and her dad attached to her really hard, which seems normal since she is his only family left.
43. She was once in love with Hugh, engaged even, she liked the idea of being a rancher’s wife.
44. Then she fell in love with writing and ran off to New York, her dad and Hugh obviously did not approve.
45. Whatever she had with Hugh ended when she left and then she met Juliet’s dad and so on.
46. She admits that she really loved Hugh. Something tells me she still does and that they may get together again.
47. This entire movie I thought that Juliet took WRITING lessons in NYC but she was taking RIDING lessons in NYC, and apparently her grandpa paid for them.
48. This explains why she is so good at barrel racing, doesn’t explain why she can’t put a saddle on a horse.
49. Another off the shoulder top, what is up with this chick?!
50. Nan is always wearing a Canadian tuxedo ( Denim Jeans, Denim shirt, and Denim jacket)
51. Nan and Juliet are having girl talk and Nan is teasing Juliet for having a crush on Monty but like she’s already been on a date with him and kissed him so this shouldn’t really be a shock for Nan.
52. Monty takes Juliet to a tree grove on their horses and claims he has never taken anyone there before.
53. They kiss on horseback, as if this movie weren’t cliche enough
54. Why is Juliet always whispering in the horse’s ear like it understands english, it doesn’t.
55. WTF Nan is eating out of a feed bag with her hands, I don’t think it’s feed but that is still weird.
56. Mom shows up while everyone is practicing and Monty hides in the worst hiding spot imaginable, I expect nothing less from this movie.
57. Apparently it’s Christmas time??!?!?!?!
58. Nan pulls the whole flattery trope with the Mom to distract her and of course it works because this movie is cliche AF
59. Hugh drops off a wreath for someone.
60. Ohhh is it the mom, I wonder if he still has feels for her.
61. Ari : “It’s for Juliet” me: ewww gross.
62. Okay mom appears outside wearing some sort of hoodie/jean jacket that 2011 Justin Bieber would wear.
63. I was right. Hugh says some BS about how he always hoped she would come back.
64. Now he tries to convince her that the grandpa always wanted them to share the ranch.
65. Now they are calling each other out on their issues.
66. Alright back to Juliet and Rodeo, just brushing.
67. Mom has decorated a small office tree that doesn’t light up on top.
68. Oh mom has found a will saying that Mom and Hugh have to split the land. Something tells me she won’t mind as much.
69. Wait, mom finds out about Juliet and Monty and now she says she has to withdrawal from the competition because she lied. daughter says she lied too, about her past in this town.
70. Uh oh mom is selling the horse to Hugh.
71. obviously this isn’t the end of Juliet’s racing career.
72. Oh shoot Hugh is ranting about how the ranch and horse should go to someone who loves it as much as the grandpa did.
73. Mom spills the beans about the will.
74. Now they feel guilty for dragging the kids in when really they were just confused about themselves but really it isn’t that hard because they found the document so move on already.
75. Whoa, Hugh confesses that he went to NYC to find the mom when he heard she was getting married.
76. Cue the “ I never stopped loving you cliche”
77. They both talk about memories rushing back and all that jazz.
78. Of course, Hugh tips his hat back and they start making out.
79. EW! If they get married that would make Monty and Juliet Step-cousins that make-out.
80. Okay so it is competition day and mom and Hugh show up.
81. I don’t know why she is competing anymore because mom is probably not going to sell Rodeo and the ranch now that she and Hugh are together.
82. Monty and Juliet apologize for sneaking around but mom supports the relationship which is gross if they end up being step-cousins.
83. Wait, apparently the current champion is back when they thought she wasn’t competing.
84. Juliet rocks the first round. Cue competition montage. The announcer has a wicked mustache and then Juliet progresses to the finals. This horse is wildin’ and going fast now.
85. Nan is walking away and some slow-mo scene makes me think something bad is about to happen.
86. OMG! OMG! WAIT! I just noticed Monty is Hugh’s nephew, Monty-Hugh. Like Montague and then Juliet! Just like the Montague and Capulet family rivalry in Verona. I CAN’T BELIEVE I DIDN’T NOTICE THIS SOONER!!!
87. I forget that the mom is a writer, she apparently knows what to write about now. Ari: “so she’s going to write about a fucking horse girl?!?”
88. She sets the record. Wait! she doesn’t win. she loses by .2 seconds against the resident champion.
89. I mean she still is keeping the horse and they do not need money for the ranch anymore since Hugh and mom are a thing, so nothing is at stake anymore.
90. Okay so Bill Atterbury from earlier comes up and offers Juliet and Rodeo $4000 and wants them to ride pro and wants Monty as a pro circuit trainer.
91. “ Y’all have a Merry Christmas”
92. All of a sudden it cuts to the ranch house where the mom is typing her paper in some bouji heels while Hugh attempts to light a fire.
93. The Judge has randomly shows up and asks if they have come to an agreement about the ranch.
94. They tell him they have, an agreement to be husband and wife.
95. I CALLED IT!!!
96. This relationship escalated really fast over the course of like 3 days
97. Monty and Juliet are back at the grove, which isn’t really a grove because there are only like 2 scrawny trees, but they just call it a grove.
98. Ewwww they are step-cousins now.
99. Now they are racing their horses at sunset.
100. Ari thinks the movie will fade out..... oh! oh! she is exactly right!
Overall, pretty odd movie. It was definitely a Hallmark movie. It was very hard to follow and a lot happened really fast. I’m still not sure if the central plot was the land dispute, horse racing, or forbidden love. The commentary that Ari and I provided was highly entertaining though.

Don’t Touch the Baby (IT AU shortfic)
This is a shortfic based upon my IT AU I made called Baby Brother AU. You can go to my page to see a drawing I drew. It’s so CUTE I COULD JUST SCREAM!! Ok, I’m done now. Enjoy the story!! Don’t forget to look at the drawing on my page!! Just look for the clowns!!!
It was getting late, and Pennywise the Dancing Clown had just finished a delicious meal with his baby brother. A child had ventured into the old rickety house on the surface, and Penny had gotten him; and he and his baby brother were now munching on the child’s corpse.
“How is it, kid? Did bubba do a good job?” Penny asked the baby. “bubba” was the baby’s reply; that was all he could really say. Penny laughed. His baby brother was so cute.
“Alright kid, time for bed.” Penny picked up the small clown and carried him to his crib. The baby yawned as he was placed on the soft mattress and in between all the old stuffed toys. Penny gave him his pacifier; watching as the severed finger he’d glued on dangled from the handle; and turned on a small music box on a small table hext to the crib. The music that played from it was what you would hear at a circus.
Penny watched as the baby yawned again and closed his eyes before drifting off to sleep.
“Goodnight, bud.” the older brother said quietly before going to his own sleeping place.
~Later~
“Dude, are you sure about this? It isn’t a good idea to be down here at night.” A boy said to his friend. “Yeah, dude! My brother will kill me if I don’t get his autographed baseball back!” he replied. The two boys had gone into the sewers late at night to get an autographed baseball that one of them had lost earlier in the day. They were walking and waving their flashlights around when one of the stopped.
“Bobby, what are you doing?” the other boy asked. “Shh. Listen. Do you hear that?” Bobby asked. Both boys stopped and listened.
They could hear the faint sound of music coming from somewhere ahead of them.
“C’mon, let’s check it out!” the other boy said to Bobby before starting to run off. “W-Wait, Jimmy! Jimmy!!” Bobby yelled after his friend. When he finally caught up to him, he stopped him. “Do we really have to look for this baseball now? We can come back down here in the morning when it’s brighter and less scary.” Bobby tried to convince his friend to leave. “No, we need to get it back tonight. Besides, I wanna know where that music’s coming from.” Jimmy sped off, Bobby close behind.
After a couple minutes, they finally got to the place where they heard the music and were surprised to find a crib.
But they were even more surprised to find a baby in the crib.
“W-What is that?!” Bobby quietly asked. Jimmy picked the baby up from the crib. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! PUT IT BACK!!” Bobby was panicking. “Dude, chill. It’s just a baby.” Jimmy said calmly. Suddenly, the baby woke up, whimpering.
“Hey there little guy.” Jimmy said to it. “Koochie koochie!” he waved his finger in front of the baby’s face.
The baby suddenly went from cute to menacing as his eyes glowed and his tiny mouth grew huge and filled with sharp teeth and he let out a growl before biting Jimmy’s finger off. Jimmy started screaming at the top of his lungs as he dropped the baby and held his hand tightly. Bobby was screaming too, of course. The baby added to the noise by starting to cry when he hit the ground with a thunk.
“W-WE NEED TO GO JIMMY! YOU NEED A HOSPITAL!!” Bobby yelled. “GEE, YA THINK?! LET’S GO!!” Jimmy screamed.
They turned and ran from the scene, but didn’t get very far before Jimmy was grabbed by something. “AHH!!” he screamed.
“JIMMY!!” Bobby screamed. He was about to run and help, but was paralyzed with fear when he saw what had a hold of his friend.
A clown with sharp teeth and a big red afro had Jimmy pinned against the floor, and boy was he pissed.
“YOU HURT HIM.” the clown said in a low angry voice.
“W-Wha-?! W-Who?! We d-didn’t hurt anyone!!” Jimmy said.
The big clown turned back and listened to the baby still crying loudly. He then turned back to Jimmy and growled.
Jimmy then realized what he meant. “Oh...h-him...W-Well, he bit my f-finger off!!!” he shouted. The clown was not happy.
“DON’T BLAME HIM FOR YOUR MISTAKE!!!!” he roared. He then took a huge bite of Jimmy’s torso.
Jimmy lied there, shocked. He didn’t think it would end like this. He heard Bobby scream his name but it was faint.
“THERE IS A LESSON TO BE LEARNED FROM THIS.” The big clown leaned over him, prepared to be his last sight before death,
“DON’T.
TOUCH.
THE BABY.”
A drop of fresh warm blood dropped onto Jimmy’s face between his eyes as his skin turned pale.
Jimmy was dead.
Bobby couldn’t move. He couldn’t breathe. He’d just watch his best friend die in front of him. He didn’t even notice when the clown went to pounce on him.
Now both kids were dead.
Pennywise quickly dragged the bodies to where his brother was. When he got there, he picked him up and cradled him, whispering softly.
“Shhh, it’s ok. Did they hurt you, Penny?” Penny asked him. The baby let out a whiney “bubba” while clutching the big clown’s clothes. “I know. They were big meanies, weren’t they?” Penny asked. The baby whimpered again. “Don’t worry, Penny. It’s alright now. Big brother took care of those bullies. Now let’s have a snack, huh?” Penny smiled at his baby brother after wiping away his tears. Baby Penny then noticed the bodies on the floor and got excited. “Woah, someone’s hungry!” Big Penny put baby Penny on the ground and watched him crawl over to one of the bodies and eat it ravenously. While that was happening, big Penny ate the other body.
When they were done, big Penny burped. “Woah, excuse me!” he laughed. Then baby Penny burped, which made big Penny laugh more and that made baby Penny laugh too. “Excuse you too, Penny!” Big Penny finished laughing.
“Pen-ny.”
Big Penny frose and looked down at his baby brother. “Did you just...?” he stuttered a bit, barely able to get the question out of his mouth.
“Pen-ny!”
Baby Penny was talking.
I mean, ‘bubba’ counts as talking too, but this was just as good.
Big Penny gasped with excitement. He swooped up his baby brother and twirled with him in his arms. He was so happy; he felt even more joyous hearing the baby’s frantic giggling. After he was done twirling he pulled his brother in for a hug. “I’m so proud of you, Penny!” he said.
“Pen-ny!” the baby replied. “Awwwww!!” big Penny said, nuzzling him.
His baby brother was so cute.

feathers [sanha]
(1.0) (2.0)
word count: 2547
warnings: none
extra info: guardian angel au, where you have a particularly difficult assignment in the form of yoon sanha and his chronic bad luck
♡
Taking a deep breath, you paused at the door of your house that you had just moved into. You were a Guardian Angel, and today was the day you were to meet your assignment. They had just turned 18, which means that it was now your job to keep them alive. As long as they stayed alive, you would be allowed to live on Earth.
You had been assigned a house next to your assignment’s residence. It was in the middle of a busy city in Korea, you quite liked the city from the little you had seen when you “moved in” a few hours earlier. Guardian Angels were supposed to be inconspicuous, but humans knew about your existence; however you still weren’t supposed to come right out and say it. So you still had to attempt to keep up the appearance of a human. Remembering that, you tucked your pale lilac wings into your back. Now you could pass as a human.
Opening the door, you stepped out onto the sidewalk. The city was alive and bustling, the streets filled with people. Thankfully, a Guardian Angel could identify their assignment by the glowing aura around them, visible only to their Guardian Angel. Craning your neck, you finally saw the human you had been assigned.
He was quite tall, with pastel pink hair, and was dressed casually. He was looking down at his phone, not quite paying attention to where he was going, and your eyes widened when you saw that a car was coming at him as he stepped onto on a crosswalk.
Instincts kicking in, you darted forward, grabbing his sweater sleeve and yanking him back onto the sidewalk before the car went hurtling by. The driver was also looking at his phone, not a good thing. The boy you had just saved seemed startled, and you saw that he had headphones in as well, so he wouldn’t have been able to even hear the car coming.
“Oh, thank you.” He said, still shaken, then seemed to remember his manners, bowing deeply to you. “I am Yoon Sanha, and I think I owe you my life now.”
“Ah, nice to meet you, Sanha. I’m Y/N.” You replied, watching as the glowing aura around him faded. You knew his name, now your assignment was truly beginning.
“Is there anything I can do to repay you, Y/N-ssi?”
“Look both ways before crossing?”
Sanha grinned down at you, nodding. “Of course. I need to be going, but thank you again!”
You breathed a sigh of relief you didn’t even realize had been building up. First day of your assignment and he almost got hit by a car. But you couldn’t leave him alone just yet, you had to make sure he stayed safe. Slipping a few people behind him, you followed him down the streets as he walked somewhere, a destination obviously in mind. Sanha stopped at a food truck, ordering his lunch.
If Guardian Angels needed to eat, you would have bought some as well, it looked delicious. But there was no hunger in your stomach, so you remained a safe distance away.
You smiled when you saw that he stopped at the crosswalk, pressing the button, and looking both ways before crossing. Managing to get across after him with only a couple seconds left, you saw him heading towards the doors of a large building, the word ‘FANTAGIO’ emblazoned across it. Must be where he works. Thinking back to your assignment information, you had also be given a job there, so this wouldn’t be that suspicious at least.
Sanha went to take a bite of the wrap he had bought, and you sensed that something was wrong with the food. This boy was about to get food poisoning, according to your Guardian Angel instincts. Not deadly, so did you really have to save him from it, and risk giving yourself away on the first day? Nah, he’ll learn a lesson.
Then, you saw a shadow move as Sanha walked by an alley. Great, he was also about the be mugged.
“You have got to be kidding me.” You groaned, dashing to intercept the confrontation. Not wanting to beat up someone, you decided to con your way out of this one.
Grabbing Sanha’s hand, you smiled at him brightly, pulling him away from the alley. “Hey, Sanha! We’re running late, let’s go, jagiya!”
With a firm grip, you dragged him forward quickly, and in the rush, he dropped his wrap. You just saved him from a mugging and food poisoning, you would have asked for a raise if you got paid. You were moving extremely fast, to the point where you were running and he was jogging, long legs able to keep up with your shorter ones. The figure disappeared back into the alley, and you stopped in front of the Fantagio building doors, promptly letting go of his hand.
“Y/N-ssi? What just happened?” Sanha asked, cocking his head, clearly confused.
“I saw someone in the alley with a knife. They looked like they were about to mug you or something, so I got you out of there.”
“Why were you there?”
“I was just on my way to work.” You explained, gesturing to the Fantagio building.
“You work here? I haven’t seen you before.” Sanha questioned, holding the door open for you.
“I’m a new hire, today’s my first day.”
“So what do you do?”
Remembering what human job you’d been given, you replied, “Nothing special, just a personal assistant.”
Stopping at the front desk, you were surprised that Sanha waited with you as you spoke to the receptionist, getting all of your first day stuff. He eyed your packet that contained all of your job descriptions. “So, who are you assisting for? One of the producers? Managers?”
Opening it, you skimmed until you saw it. “A group named ASTRO.”
“I’m in that group!” Sanha squealed excitedly. “This is awesome, come on!”
You had to jog after Sanha as he ran to the elevator, pressing the button excitedly. Sensing danger again, you looked over to the stairs. “Sanha, this is going to take too long, how about we just take the stairs?”
“We’re going to the sixth floor, Y/N-ssi, no way.”
As he said that, the elevator opened, and you reluctantly followed him. The elevator was empty, and he smiled as you stepped on, leaning against the wall. As you went up, you watched the numbers go up, the elevator stopping on the second floor. A maintenance man got on, pushing his cart of tools with him. Perched precariously on top of some boxes was a sledgehammer, and you sensed it starting to wobble towards Sanha. If that hit his head, it definitely wouldn’t feel good.
“Sanha, could you please move?” You asked, and he looked at you strangely.
“Why?”
“Move.”
Seeming extremely put-off, he did as you said, and just as he moved to a different corner, the hammer fell. It slammed to the floor with a heavy thunk, breaking the tiles underneath it.
“I am so sorry!” The maintenance man exclaimed, picking his tool up before bowing deeply to Sanha.
“It was an accident, I forgive you.” The younger man said awkwardly, and the elevator binged, it had reached floor six. Sanha and you got off, leaving the other man on the elevator.
“So far you’re a great personal assistant.” Your companion commented, and you laughed a little bit.
“Thanks.”
“Now come on, you’ll want to meet the others. We’re doing dance practice today, so you’ll probably be busy running around getting water and towels and fans or whatever else the boys will need.” Sanha explained, leading you down the a hallway.
“We try to bring our own stuff, but most of the time we’re really forgetful. Like today, I don’t have any water, so I’m going to need some, if you don’t mind.” He seemed really uncomfortable with ordering someone around, even if it’s your job, he obviously wasn’t used to it.
“Of course, Mr. Yoon.” You replied.
“Don’t call me that, okay? You called me Sanha before, you can still call me that, okay?”
“Okay, Sanha.”
Sanha gave you a small grin before opening a door for you. “This, is the practice room.”
It was a fairly large room, wood floors, and a wall covered entirely in mirrors, probably so they could check their form when they danced. There were five other boys in there, and one turned to the pink-haired boy.
“Ya! The maknae finally decides to join us.” The short brunette man said, exasperated, but he still had a hint of friendliness in his tone.
“Sorry hyungs, I almost got hit by a car, and then almost mugged, and then almost killed by a falling sledgehammer. Oh, this is Y/N-ssi, by the way, she’s our new personal assistant.”
The others didn’t seem surprised by Sanha recounting the three times he almost died today, but were more surprised by your precense. “We got a personal assistant?” A dark-haired boy asked curiously.
“You should be used to it, Dongmin, don’t you actors get one on set or something?” A shorter dark-haired boy replied, and the one addressed as Dongmin seemed to ponder this for a moment.
You took this opportunity to introduce yourself. “Nice to meet you all, I’m Y/N. Please, ask me for anything, I’m here to help.”
They went one by one and you learned all their names before a couple older people entered. Apparently they were the dance instructors, and you took this as your cue to stay to the side, observing and ready to fetch anything they might need.
The members of ASTRO seemed reluctant to actually ask you for anything, so you had to instinctually get things they wanted. You saw Rocky had to blink the sweat out of his eyes frequently, and handed him a towel. Sanha had mentioned before that he didn’t have water, so you grabbed three water bottles from the vending machine; the two extra came in handy when JinJin knocked his over and spilled most of it, and the other because Moonbin had also forgotten water. Dongmin needed batteries for his fan during their five minute break, and MJ’s headband flew off at one point, and you had to pick it up before Sanha slipped on it and ended up breaking his neck or something.
This assignment was going to be exhausting.
Finally, the members were done with practice, had gotten changed, and were all starting to go home.
“Hey Y/N-ssi, we’re all going to dinner, would you like to come with us?” JinJin offered, and you looked to Sanha.
“Hyungs, I’m actually really tired. Can I just go home now?” Sanha asked, a slight whine in his voice. Thankfully you wouldn’t have to stay out any longer.
“Do you have your key?” Dongmin questioned, and the youngest nodded his head. “Okay, be safe.”
“He only wants to go home so he can finish the ice cream.” Moonbin proclaimed, and you had to hold back your laughter at Sanha’s indignant look.
“Nu-uh!”
Dongmin shook his head at their bickering, turning to you. “Are you coming, Y/N-ssi?”
“I’d love to, but I have more unpacking to do before I go to bed. Another time maybe?” You told him, and the other boys looked disappointed, but accepted your reasoning anyway.
“Okay, well see you tomorrow!”
The five older members said their goodbyes to you, waving as they headed down towards whatever restaurant they were going to.
“Did you just move in?” Sanha asked, falling into step with you as you both walked down the sidewalk. It was still crowded, but a little less so now that it was late.
“Yep, as soon as I got the job.”
“Where are you from?”
“Nowhere you’ve been to, trust me.”
“Oh. Well, how old are you?”
“Why are you asking?”
“So I know what to call you.” He said in a ‘duh’ tone, and you remembered that there were different customs around the world that you had to adapt to as a Guardian Angel.
“Oh, well I just turned twenty-one.” You made up an age, knowing that you couldn’t tell him your real age, but also that you wouldn’t get hired as a personal assistant at an age any closer to Sanha’s.
“Ah, noona, you’re the same age as Dongmin hyung!” Sanha exclaimed brightly, and you were surprised that he had called you noona so soon. From what you understood, that was used by a guy in reference to one of his close female friends that was older than him.
He had apparently seen your surprise, and started backtracking. “If you’re okay with me calling you that, Y/N-ssi.”
“You can call me whatever you’d like, Sanha, I don’t mind.” You reassured him, and his smile came back.
The rest of the walk home was filled with amicable conversation, no more danger to Sanha’s life appeared. When you saw the door to your house ahead of you, you felt relief flood your system. Your day was almost done.
“This is where we live.” Sanha gestured to the house beside yours.
“Really?” You feigned surprise, approaching your own door. “I live right next door.”
Sanha looked at you strangely, furrowing his brows. “You live next door to me, you’re my personal assistant, and you saved my life nearly half a dozen times today.” His eyes widened as he seemed to figure it out. “You’re my Guardian Angel! Oh my god!”
Rolling your eyes, you clamped a hand over his mouth. “Stop yelling, please.”
Sanha nodded to show his compliance, and you took your hand off his mouth. “Can I see your wings?”
“No.”
“You’re no fun.”
“I’m not supposed to be fun, I’m supposed to keep you alive. And so far, that has been incredibly difficult.”
Sanha seemed embarassed, rubbing his neck. “Sorry, noona.”
“It’s my job, so whatever.” You shrugged, approaching your door. “Can I trust you to get inside and get to sleep safely?”
“How does this work, can you like, see into the future? Or is it like Spiderman with his Spidey Senses?”
“The second one? I don’t know, I just kind of… know when something’s going to happen.” You rubbed your face, wanting to just get inside. Even if Guardian Angels didn’t need sleep, you still felt exhausted, and wanted to at least get some kind of rest, awake or not.
“Do you-”
“Sanha.” Interrupting him, you were starting to feel exasperated. “You need to get to sleep. Lack of sleep leads you to be less aware of your surroundings, and makes my job a bit harder. Please, ask me these questions at another time.”
“Okay!” He smiled cheerfully, unlocking his door. “See you tomorrow Guardian Angel noona!”
And with that, he disappeared into his house, allowing you to retreat into yours. As you walked into your somewhat empty living room, you stretched, allowing your wings to erupt out of your shoulderblades. Finally feeling relaxed, you sat on your kitchen counter, ready to run next door at any moment. Even if Sanha was home, you had the feeling that he still wasn’t safe from his own bad luck.
[would you all maybe like a part 2 of this? bc i know there was no actual romance or anything in here. just curious]

New Orleans: Stranger & more familiar.
There is a Kurt Vonnegut quote that Asa referenced the other day that has been ringing in my ears ever since. It goes something like “Strange travel plans are like dancing lessons from the universe.” Being both a lover of dancing (above most things) & a true believers in *signs*, it has been on my mind. There are so many levels to it-the trust for your dancing partners, learning to let go, making the most out of everything, forgiving yourself for the fumbles, etc. Mostly, trusting your gut.
I few days ago, I found a little bit of loneliness seeping in. Not an overwhelming amount, but as someone who really loves heart-full chats, I realized it had been some time since I’ve really talked to someone with my heart. I noted that, and kinda kept it in my brain, filling “maybe try to make friends” on my to-do list. I really like my alone time. I also really like my social time. It’s funny, that recently I kind of waver back and forth between the extremes- spending so much alone time that I start to feel lonely, and then spending way too much time around people that I find myself getting ever-so grumpy (which isn’t usually part of my demeanour). It is about balance, and I think this trip has been an excersize it that so far.
The past few days, I’ve made an effort to slow my pace a little more. I spent one day in City Park. Which is a very big park on the “lakeside” of the city. It’s one of two big parks in the city (the other being Audubon park one the far west side of the city; which I went to the following day). City park is the home of the Museum of Art, the sculpture garden, golf course, a theme park called Storyland & a really beautiful botanical garden. Audubon park hosts a golf course, the city zoo & the most lively, filled duck pond I’ve ever witnessed. The parks were nice for sure, but the trees themselves were amazing- in particular the ones in City Park. Many of them are well over 500 years old, & my favourite one of all was estimated to be around 860 years old. I sat in the roots of that tree really trying to sink in and ground. I held on the obsidian stone Mare gave me before I left & did our grounding ritual- hugging the tree and following its roots all the way down into the earth, then to the core of the earth itself, then back again. It worked in part, but I did kind of wish I had another witch to sit in the ritual with. It did feel so, so, nice to sit at the base of that tree though. It felt like a great-grandfather I’d never met before. I felt it’s basey-vibration and felt so oddly comforted. It was like all the high-frequency, anxious energy just got absorbed & ceased to exist under the (very very wide) canopy of that tree. I sat there a long time. Even as the tour groups passed & they all kind started at me half-hugging the tree. It felt dis-loyal to leave just because of on-lookers, and so, I stayed.
There were a few other huge oaks throughout the park as well. The other notable one is known as the singing oak, which happens to be my friend Troy’s favourite tree (it’s the first thing he told me I should do when I got here). It houses wind-chimes of all different sizes- really huge base ones, to teeny-tiny fairy-like ones. Apparently they are tuned to fill out the scale of African music. Which I thought was cool.
The museum was also pretty interesting (Although the Ogden was still my favourite). It contains a lot of the typically expected pieces- oils from dutch masters, a mogdalini, a picasso, a warhol, etc. My favourite exhibit was actually the one being displayed in the front hall. It was Tina Girourard’s work (in collaboration with Haitian artisans) called Bondeye: Between & beyond. It was a collection of Voodoo flags based one what to appeared to be a slightly different archana of Tarot cards. It was stunning. bright, detailed, full of thought, history. Very provoking, memorable-- and very New Orleans.
As I waited for the streetcar (which was very late) I spotted some familiar faces in the crowd. A couple I have actually sat behind in the ride up to the park, and then again at several points in the museum. When the streetcar finally did arrive, I again, happened to have sat right behind them. The woman in the pair spun around & told me she had seen me earlier & we got to talking. Olga is from New York via Arizona via Azerbaijan, but now in LA- Not Louisiana (as she’s had to correct people), but Los Angeles. Sam is born & raised in Los Angeles, but a francophile & lover of travelling too. We chatted a bit- they thought I was a local (lol) and were asking me for recommendations, which I gave them. We talked for a long while about travel & they told me to text them when I’m LA. Which is cool. Olga also gave me a bunch of recommendations for Arizona, which was really nice, because, in terms of travelling, that’s the area that makes me a little more nervous- just because I don’t have a car.
I actually ended up running into them the very next day at a little cafe in the French Quarter called Cafe Beignet. We again, swapped things-to-do lists. I was just coming from Audubon park & they were just going, so we parted way... But in a small place like this, I’m sure we’ll cross over again soon. I stuck around the quarter, because it was the weekend & all the busking musicians were out. Holy Moly. They are great here. I wish I could have spent hours listening to each one. Or more so, I was really wishing for a swing dance partner (but to be fair, even in Halifax I can’t always find one). There are also other types of booth/tables set up. Especially along Royale. Tarot card readers, artists-- my favourite of all time was a lady that was live-painting.... using a marionette.
P.s! I found my all-time favourite place for noms. The Cafe Verti, which is also on Royal (if I remember correctly). I mean, as a vegitarian, I expected to miss out on many of the New Orleanian classics-- but this cafe does a veggie version of the PoBoy called “the green giant.” It was also recommended that next time, I get the green giant with olive tempanade as well. I’m already planning on going back there in the next few days. It is a very hole-in-the-wall type of place--- so honestly, you probably wouldn’t find it unless you were specifically looking for it. It’s sooo worth it though.
Later on, Asa & I ended up taking Kozmeaux for a stroll to Cafe Flora. Which, for those familiar with the old establishments of the northend of Halifax, is very much like The Good Food Emporium. Everyone knows everyone, or every will know everyone eventually. Of course, it has it’s NOLA twist to it- you sit under palm trees, etc. Across the street is Big Daddy’s which is apparently the after-hours hang out spot in the Marigny. We sat around talking about weird paranormal stuff & life yadda yadda. One of the humans that works there is named Sal Geloso. Apparently he was voted New Orleans best street musician by Rolling Stone magazine. I’ve never seen him play, but I tell ya he dresses like a rock star for sure. We met one of the regulars Jeremy. Who is a super brilliant mathematician & physicist. Who used to be a hypnotist. Who now does massage one the side. (!!!! um hello signs from the universe).
Actually Asa did talk to me about the zebra races from the day before (Which I missed because my stoopooood American SIM isn’t working properly- so I missed his text). Apparently it only happens like once a year! And I only missed it by happenstance! What are the chances of that! He also told me about a fight that almost/kind broke out in front of the house the night before between drunken people outside the Hangover Club. He felt the argument really coming to a peek, so he grabbed his Ocarina & hid, softly playing. There was something about the strange melody that broke the spell of inebriated anger... and it broke up like pretty much right away. And now I know, I should always carry an Ocarina on me. Just as a side note too- Asa & Leon’s circus is called the Magic Bean Circus. They are trying to put together a ten-year anniversary of this tour they did, with a festival they are going to call BeanStock. Which sounds veryyyyy much like a cousin of white rabbit. They aren’t entirely sure where it’s gonna be yet, it seems- either upstate New York, or New Orleans. They are gonna get Odetta Hartman, Leon’s sister to kinda headline it seems. I looked her up & she’s great. If it gets proper legs, I’d definitely go if I could make it happen.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Last night, I stayed out late... which honestly was a challenge because I’m still runnning on what I call “farm time” which means waking up at 6:30 and going to bed around 8. Honestly, it’s allowed me to utilize my days really well. It was worth changing for this show last night tho. It was a Gasa Gasa which is a punk venue in Uptown. The line up was Nick Shoulders & they okay crawdads, Baby Tony & the Teenies, and Max & the Martians. Nick Shoulder’s band is old-country, on the susp of punk- mostly in aesthetics, but definitely comes through in the music to a lesser extent too. They did a Hank Williams-esque version of Blonde’s Heart of Glass which I was a fan of. Honestly, this band in particular was right up my alley. Female drum player. Folk-punk vibes. They had solid chemistry as a group. More importantly though. Nick’s yodelling made my heart melt. (lol) ---I mean. I loveeeeee old country & bluegrass. It’s kinda why I came down to the south in the first place. As soon as they started- I felt a wave of “oh yeah, this is why I came here”.
Baby Tony & the Teenies is a super unique duo. If I were to try to describe them, it would probably be something like “freak-doowop” or “Alien Rock n’ Roll.” B-52s would be the closest relative I’d say. It was super fun. And there were a few people that got up to dance (which---- TANGENT TIME---- people are sooooo dang good at dancing down here. I mean. I shouldn’t be surprised. This is where the two-step is alive and well. Apparently in Lousiana, they have the cajun-two step, which is a double-step one direction, double-step the other. I was so jealous though, but too shy to ask a stranger at the time. Next time, I refuse to be shy).
When I walked in I was literally the only one there. Actually. Well, besides those performing. I felt so much pressure to be engaged with the music (which honestly, wasn’t hard). It’s been so long since I’ve been uncomfortable like that. I mean, in Halifax, I go to things by myself all the time... but it never really feels that isolating. I either know the performers, or run into someone, or at the very least the venue is familiar to me. This was all freaky-fresh & so I just tried to casually lean... without unintentionally sinking in the wall beside me. After a while, more people showed up-- but they were obviously friends of the band.
A cool card is something I don’t really like trying to carry around in my pocket. So I kinda vowed to myself that I wouldn’t leave without talking to someones--- I mean I honestly did come all the way across town (well, canada originally) to see them play. So I went up to Eli from Baby Tony, to introduce myself. Sometimes I forget I can be an interesting person. I always kinda underestimate myself in being able to bring an interesting story into an interaction (I don’t know why, honestly, my life is super strange & wonderful). Anyways, we very quickly found common ground, exchanged Instagrams & agreed out art styles would definitely get along. Their band is finishing up a mini-tour, just coming up from Florida, then back home to Athens, Georgia. They mentioned that if I was ever in Georgia, I should message them via “the world wide web.” I said the same about Canada. It would be super cool to see them play in Halifax, but I especially think they’d go over well in Montreal.
The show ended & I stopped by the okay crawdads to say I really enjoyed their set-- because I really did. I told Nick I was jealous of his dancing & he said he was about to ask me to dance but was feeling shy. But he then did invite me to the St. Roch tavern tonight for more country music. Asa & I are going to Preservation Hall, but I think we will go afterwards. Nick also told me to go to Country Tuesday-- which is the thing Milly is playing, so as it happens I was planning on going anyways. New Orleans is definitely a small, interwoven place like Halifax. It’s certainly nice to slowly be integrating in that way. In some part, I wish I was staying longer too, but I guess that’s part of the excersize itself. Not going to lie though, I’m having very vivid daydreams about coming back here for longer. Maybe for Mardi Gras. And maybe bringing a few friends. There are definitely some people in my life that NEED to meet this city-- I’m definitely thinking of Steph Rybczyn here, but there are many others too.
-------------------------------------------------
The Ten of Cups.
My friend Kirsti is organizing a collaborative project between a whole bunch of artists in the northend to make a Tarot Deck. We each get assigned a card that was randomly selected. Mine is the Ten of Cups. Which is the card representing Divine love, Blissful relationships, Alignment & Harmony. More simply; joy, peace & family. Feels pretty good having that card, but I don’t know what I’m going to do it yet. My Illustrations tend to be a little darker than that usually. I am kinda looking at it as a guiding card on my whole trip tho.
It’s also nice I can start thinking about it now. I’ve definitely had my mini-sketchbook in my pocket, while I stop in the little gallery & shops, making little sketches of elements I find inspiring. I’m sure many of the sketches will make some sort of more concrete appearance in my card.

Mr. Wheezy sighed as he sat down on the sofa in the staff beak room. Finally, he could catch his breath. The casino was busier than usual that night and nobody had a chance to sit down until it all died down later. Weezy took out a cigar from his pocket and held it between his teeth as he searched for a lighter. He sighed, took a breath and blew hard like one would try to pop their ears as the top of his head glowed red and grew hot. Wheezy put the cigar at his head and the tip lip at last. Wheezy relaxed and started to smoke his cigar. As he enjoyed a few long and slow puffs, the door opened and closed behind him. He didn’t need to look up as the person walked past him and sat down at the table across the room.
Wheezy felt his heart skip a beat when he noticed who it was. It was Red, one of the new entertainers for the casino, that bet her soul on the Devil. He didn’t know her that much and only spoke to her briefly before she was whisked away to do other things or she’d usually totally ignore him. At least he was finally alone with her; he could finally get the courage to talk to her. He studied her as she sat at the table, not totally gawking and not totally looking away. She was dressed in her usual red mermaid gown; her brown hair was up and curled at the ends but was pushed away by her slender gloved hand as she rested her cheek against her palm. Her eyes were looking down at what looked like a book of sorts, like she was studying the little details of the pages. Wheezy noticed the book was blank so she wasn’t really reading. In her other hand she held a pen and she nibbled on the end as she was in deep thought. Wheezy looked closer at her lips, which were parted and were red like a rose. Wheezy wandered his eyes down from her lips down to her neckline. She never did fancy jewelry, and even if she did it’d mostly be a bracelet or earrings. He went down further hoping to catch a glimpse of her bosoms but was damned with her arm blocking a perfect view.
Wheezy took a drag of his cigar and looked away nonchalantly and studied the clock a moment. Wheezy heard Red sigh and drop her pen on the table. He looked over and saw Red lean down and rest her head on the table. Her hair slid down the sides and revealed her back. Her skin was a light peach and her dress reached low to about her lower back. At least he got a better view of her hips, which he was actually grateful for. Before Wheezy spoke up, the door opened. Wheezy looked to see it was Chips Bettigan. He strolled in wearing his usual “cowboy” look: a tan blazer, white shirt, jeans and brown cowboy boots with his signature hat on his head.
“Red, there ya are, girl!” Chips said with a smile as he waltzed in like he owned the place. He saw Wheezy, nodded, and went right over to the table where Red sat and took up a seat for himself in front of her. “Ya’ll right?” His accent was thick Southern Texan. It made Wheezy want to vomit.
“I’m fine.” Red looked up and straightened back up into her chair. She again rested her head in the same hand she had earlier. “I’m just… having some trouble writing a new song. You know how the boss is. HE thinks I can come up with songs on the spot… I can’t.”
“Well, maybe ya’ve been workin’ too hard?” Chips shrugged and rested his head in the same fashion Red was. “Take a break and maybe… I dunno, somethin’ would come to ya?”
“I work a few nights a week and you call that “busy”, Chips?” Red’s lips curved up at one side. “I also help out the boss with a few errands here and there, I help out you guys from time to time on your needs if we’re busy, I get dance lessons from Pirouletta for my routines… I got a full house here.”
Chips nodded as he listened. Wheezy looked over and saw Red slump her forehead into her hand. “I can’t even find the muse for a new song… If it keeps goin’, I’m useless here.”
“Aw, don’t say that, Red! ‘Sides, the boss ain’t the one to toss out great talent like that!”
“What about that duo on unicycles that juggled chainsaws?”
“Um…”
“And that one lady who was a “magician” and couldn’t swipe a full wallet out of that one guy and got caught?”
“But that’s—”
“What about that skeleton comedian? He was funny, despite his stupid puns, right? And look what happened to him. Stuck in the underground somewhere.”
“Wait, I don’t—”
Red sighed, stopping him. “No. I’ll have to keep writing until something comes up.”
“If ya want, Miss Red, I was thinkin’… Maybe I could take ya out of the casino for a bit? I hear there’s this picture out that has a character in your predicament. Maybe that’d be a nice thing to see sometime?” Chips took off his hat and held it in between his hands. “I mean, if you were willin’ to get out. It does get a bit stuffy in here.”
“Well, mostly because of that cigar smell. Isn’t it getting stronger in here, Chips?” Red looked over and noticed Mr. Wheezy, the tip of his head glowing a dull red like a cigar being dragged for an inhale. “Oh, Wheezy I didn’t notice you were here.”
“Peh.” Wheezy huffed and turned away. He took a drag of his cigar and blew smoke out from the gap between his teeth and ignored the two as they went back to their conversation like he wasn’t there. That pissed him off a little bit. But it stopped when Red said something that piped his interest.
“Look, Chips, I’ll… I’ll sleep on it. I can’t really think straight with my head poundin’ like a jack hammer.”
Chips nodded and put his hat back on his head. “Well, I’ll leave ya to it then. Hope ya get rid of them writer’s blocks in yer head, Miss Red.” Chips stood up from his seat, tilted his hat towards Red, and walked out.
Bingo. Weezy looked back over to Red, who paid him no mind as usual, as she leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. She leaned her head back and let her hair fall down from her shoulders as she closed her eyes.
“Y’know, Wheez?”
Wheezy looked up when Red said his name out of the blue. He looked over behind her in surprise. She still had her eyes closed as she continued. “Is there somewhere I can go? This room is killing me.”
“W-what’dya mean?” Wheezy spoke up.
“I mean, is there somewhere, anywhere, I can go to in the casino? What areas are blocked off?”
“Uh… obviously the Devil’s room is off limits unless ya get “special permission”. Never bother the boss at his office unless ya really wanna bother ‘im or have important info.” Wheezy looked up and thought some more. “I mean, Dice usually goes to the music room and muse on the piano for a bit, and—”
“Does he mind if others use the piano?”
“What?”
“Where’s the music room at? Maybe playing something would help me, that usually helps me get a melody.” Red suddenly stood up practically ran out the door. “Nevermind, I’ll look for it myself!”
Wheezy watched as Red straight up bolted from her chair and run out the door. Wheezy looked at the table to see that she left her book and pen there. He finished off his cigar, thinking Red would return any minute to get the book, but she never did. After snuffing out the last of his cigar he got up and went to the table where the book lied open. He turned a few pages and noticed the pretty handwriting on some and others being a bit sloppy and rushed. He decided to land on a page and began to read.
“… Havana, how I miss you already. I’m stuck in literal Hell as I write to you, my dear Havana. I will always miss being in the warm embrace of your calm winds, your gently kisses on my cheeks from the sunshine, the smell of the morning dew on fresh lilacs by my windows… […] After being in Hell, it’s always warm here. I mean, I can come and go on certain times of the day/night as long as I have a chaperone with me. Even then, I can only go to certain shops here and there and not spend too long. Everybody has a tight schedule here. It feels like I have a bit too much freedom sometimes. But sometimes it also feels like I’m restricted […] Some of the Casino folks are nice to me. Pirouletta, though serious, is like an older sister to me, I think. Pip and Dot are also nice, mostly Dot because she finally has somebody to talk to about clothes and such while her husband Pip ignores us most of the time or make sarcastic remarks.”
Wheezy skimmed the pages a moment as he tried to look for his name. She seemed to have written about at least everyone in the Casino. “Mr. Chimes… Mangosteen… Oh…”
“I caught Mr. Wheezy stealing glances my way when I was hanging out with the Devil today. He was a bit far from the table, but I could tell he was looking at me. Well, my chest mostly. I pretended I was cold so Dice could let me borrow his jacket for the rest of the evening. It seemed Lady Luck was on my side at that moment. At least King Dice’s fancy cologne masked the disgusting smells of hard liquor and cigars. Mr. Wheezy is… how do I put it? I have no words that can describe a person of his nature. One minute he’s cracking jokes and the next he seems to be undressing me with his eyes. Sometimes in the same sentence. It’s…”
“Mr. Wheezy, what are you doing?”
Wheezy jumped a little and quickly turned around when he heard the voice. He didn’t notice the door was still open when Pirouletta walked in. She was a craps roulette wheel and didn’t have her usual attire on, mostly the white blouse and black pants attire in place of her skirt as she helped on the casino floor for her shift. Pirouletta saw Wheezy with the book and raised a brow. “That is Madame Red’s book. Why do you have it?”
“I didn’t steal it. Red was here earlier and she left in a hurry and forgot about it. I wasn’t readin’ or nuthin’.”
“I was here for a few minutes but your eyes never left the pages.” Pirouletta suddenly took the book and shut it closed. “I know this is Red’s favorite journal. She uses it to write songs and keep her private thoughts down on it. I will bring this back to her now.”
“Nah, I’ll do it. Oh, and since we’re on the subject, what’s her story?”
“We were not on subject, Mr. Weezy. But if you want to know… Madame Red would tell you.”
Wheezy groaned. “C’mon, you two talk all the time! All I know is she bet her soul. What else?”
“Why are you suddenly so interested in her?” Pirouletta raised a brow at the cigar.
“Uh, because she’s talked to everybody but me?”
“Hmph. I only heard it from her, but she and her sisters are famous on the Mainlands. They were to come to the Isles to perform but decided to stop by the Casino for fun. They were to all meet up on the Isles as they were coming in from different areas. Only Madame Red and her sister came in together, the others were separate. One of Madame Red’s sisters placed a bet for her own soul but Madame Red took her place. And she is here now as a new performer. Happy now?”
“Uh, I guess. I thought it’d be kinda different… Anyways, I’m gonna go return this to her. She might actually be lost, y’know?” Weezy gently slipped the book from Pirouletta’s hands and slid it into his pocket in his coat.
“Hm. We DO help her, you know. After all, we ARE “family”. Do not forget that, Wheezy.” Pirouletta soon turned heel with grace and soon left the room.
Wheezy huffed and walked out of the room in the opposite direction and headed over towards where the music room was. He reached into his coat pockets and rested them inside for a moment. As he turned a corner, he ran into a tall figure.
“Shit, watch where you’re--!” Wheezy looked and saw a large purple bow tie and knew who it was right away. “D-Dice! I didn’t see ya there!”
King Dice’s lips turned into a scowl as he glared down at Mr. Wheezy. “Just be glad you didn’t finish that sentence, Mr. Wheezy. And, pray tell me, what are you doin’ off the floor?”
“I uh… I was lookin’ for Red.” Wheezy brushed himself off and stood upright. “She forgot somethin’ and I’m gonna return in to her!”
King Dice’s expression still didn’t change, but he did raise a brow. “Oh? Usually you’re the type that keeps “forgotten” things for your own desires, Mr. Wheezy. If you may, I’ll return it to her personally.” King Dice held out his hand towards Wheezy.
“Wait, what are YOU doin’ here? It’s busy as hell out there. Do you really got time for takin’ a stroll, let alone returnin’ something to Red?”
“Actually, I helped Madame Red find the music room. She should still be there now, if I’m not mistaken. And it’d be a nice break before I return to the casino.”
“Nah, I got this. After all, it’d leave me a good impression on her if she knew I returned this to her.”
“You never did leave good impressions on anybody, Mr. Wheezy,” Dice said flatly.
Ouch.
“Well, first time’s the charm, boss!” Mr. Wheezy walked around Dice as he soon headed towards the music room. “I’ll, uh, let’cha get back to what you was doin’ then!”
Mr. Wheezy bolted and turned a corner, sighed once he caught his breath and noticed a soft tune coming from the hallway. He walked towards where the music room was. The door was opened ajar, just enough for Wheezy to take a peek inside. The room was open with bright lights, a simple stage to practice dance acts on, several different instruments like drums, bass, guitar, saxophone… typical jazz instruments. Wheezy looked and saw Red sitting at the piano, where she strummed a sad melody. He thought he heard it before, Beethoven? Mozart? He knew just them, really, as he wasn’t too keen on slow “classical” music. He was more of a jazz and swing kinda guy. But he did know that Pirouletta would often dance to this on the phonograph.
Wheezy slipped into the room and watched from the door as he listened. Red’s eyes were closed as she played each note like a tender touch, like she’d break them if she wasn’t careful. It even seemed she knew the song by heart, as Wheezy didn’t see any sheet music on the piano. She gently leaned in to the piano, leaned back and tossed her hair back as she picked up the pace of a fast part. Wheezy recognized this part as Pirouletta would usually pick up the pace and dance a little faster to this scene, before pausing and continuing again with the slow rhythm once more. Red once again leaned in to the piano as she soon slowed down for a dramatic finish. Then, she sneezed.
"Gesundheit."
Red whipped around and looked at Wheezy in shock. "Christ Almighty you scared the shit out of me!" Red yelped. She turned back around and started to strum the keys again. "But thanks. Why are you here?"
"I heard ya playin' and thought I'd listen?" Wheezy got closer to Red and played a few keys of a random tune he made up on the spot. "So, Dice let you use his piano?"
"This is his?" she asked.
"Yeah. I mean, he plays it all the time. He never lets nobody play it."
"That's a double negative, Wheez." Wheezy gave Red a puzzled look. Red sighed in annoyance. "Anyways. Mr. Dice said it was fine for me to play his piano. It... it's actually better than the one I have at home."
"Back on the Mainlands?"
"I don't recall ever tellin' you anything about my life, Wheez. But, yes, back on the Mainlands I have a piano, but it's black. This is white." Red soon started to play another song on the piano. "Odd, such an instrument being in hell being white as porcelain, while the one I have is black as ebony. Poetic, is it not?"
"Uh, yeah, I guess?" Wheezy scratched the back of his head and shrugged.
"Hm. Thought so."
"Wait, you thought what?" Wheezy leaned over the piano and looked down at Red, who continued to calmly play.
"You're certainly not the type to appreciate certain things."
"Sure I got... things I like!"
"Yes, strong drinks, fancy cigars, and women come to mind when I think about it. But you don't appreciate it, do you?"
"The hell are ya tryin' ta say?" Wheezy was starting to get pissed off now. "That I can't appreciate shit?!"
Red stopped playing and stood up from her seat and glared down at Wheezy, who straightened up and glared down at her. "You and I will never get along, Mr. Wheezy. I'm water, you're oil. Now, if you'll excuse me I best be off before I lose my temper."
"What does the boss even sees in ya anyways? Everybody's always talkin' that yer some shit lady that can sing! Yer nice and laughin' and jokin' but behind closed doors you're... a fuckin' bitch!"
Red raised her hand to slap him, causing Wheezy to coil in defense, but she huffed. "And here I thought you were tough shit, Mr. Wheezy. I was wrong." Red carefully closed the piano and walked out of the music room without another word. Wheezy growled under his breath and took out Red's journal once again. He sat on the stool and started to read again. He could use some information against her as revenge. Teach her place and see who's "tough shit".
"Seems a bit "girly" for you, Mr. Wheezy. Are you queer? I'm not gunna say anything if you are." Mr. Wheezy felt his spine run down with a cold chill, causing him to sit up straight and suddenly close the book. "So. Red's been havin' problems with your sorry ass again, huh?" The Devil took a long drag of his cigar as he leaned against the door frame to the music room. Usually the Devil would never be in here but today was one of those special occasions. Before Wheezy could respond, the Devil took the book from his hands and skimmed a few pages as he held his cigar in his teeth. "Hm. Knowin' thy enemy, huh? She seems to have a lot to say 'bout the Casino. See, in the beginning it's how she got this here journal a few days before she got to the Isles. Then here it's the ferry, and a day or two after she got her soul taken away. Seems she's got a lot to say about everybody here, too." The Devil skipped a few pages and laughed when he saw his own name. "Oh, man she even has me in here! How delightful."
"I was gonna return it to her, I swear! I just wanted to know why she hates me!"
"Hate's a strong word, Wheez. Hold on." The Devil took a closer look at a certain page and smirked. "Dirty, dirty girl. What language!"
"What?" Wheezy got up and attempted to read over the Devil's shoulder. The Devil responded by crouching over the book and blocking Wheezy from view.
"Hold yer horses! I'll letcha see that in a minute. She wrote quite a bit 'bout me and Dice here. Juicy things. Wait, listen to this!" The Devil tried to mimic Red's low feminine voice, but it ended up higher pitched. "Oh, that King Dice and Devil sure are something! They make me weak at the knees whenever I see them strut their stuff! I can never keep my composure when they're around! My mouth gets so dry and I always get a huge lump in my throat whenever I see them. I wish I had something of THEIRS stuck in my throat!"
"Bullshit!" Wheezy replied, but he couldn't help it but smirk.
"Man, you wish!" The Devil took a drag of his cigar and flicked the ashes off onto Wheezy's head. "Anyways, she's gonna want it back now. She probably has a LOT to say after today." The Devil caused the journal to go up in smoke and flame before it disappeared into thin air. The journal landed in Red's room, right on her bed, safe from any scorch marks.

Character Intro 2: Cenna is bored
“Sir Balder, where would you like to go?”
Busted.
It’s supposed to be a typical day just like the other days, but my busy-body-personal assistant catches me before I can sneak out from my jobs. Geez, why now of all times? Today is the day Baker Rony gives out the special menu with 20% for 20 first buyer.
“I heard the outer wall’s new equipment has been installed, I want to take a look and while I’m on it I may do some patrol…”
I tried to give some excuse, well, I actually want to do them after taking some bread.
“I think those jobs are supposed to be knight’s job which is unnecessary for imperial knight to do, Sir”
I forgot I got promoted.
“Come to think of it, some maids did say there’s a delicious bakery on St. Peter’s street”
I am shuddering, are you psychic?
“Sir, you need to beware of your position. You may have many accomplishments compare to noblesses on your age, but you should act like a proper noble too.”
“Geez, I don’t want to act like a noble every time, it’s suffocating, and I don’t even have any title” now I’m sulking.
“Not yet, you must remember who your family is, every little action of yours is always be noticed” George starts to emphasize.
Yes, a Marquess family member should act nobler than anyone. Well, I am only a third son from a mistress who happened to be needed because the sick first and second son might not live long enough. But that’s already an old story! My bros all healthy now, all thanks to my magic.
Let me tell you a bit about my old’ days story: I am a typical bastard who was abused by family and also a troublemaker. As the result of my mischievousness, an ancient magus woke up from his slumber and I was enslaved until I managed to run away. I leave the full story for later, the important thing is that after that event I got a very good magic ability and control all above 40%. Even an advanced wizard can only have 35% at maximum. My luck hit it’s best when I was acknowledged by my father-and later the whole family, as a Balder. Only that time! I worked my ass off to fulfill father’s expectation: manners, ballroom dance (what’s the point of moving your body together with a woman-full of stinky perfume?), politics, histories, sword mastery. The only lessons I take wholeheartedly are geography and mathematics. Why? Because those lessons can be used everywhere and very important for merchants. Yup, I wanted to be a merchant, but I guess being a noble sounded more appealing to my 10 y.o self. If only I can turn back time, I want to tell my child-self to use my magic for my own convenience than saving some noble ass. Look at me now, even after my brothers were all healthy, they wouldn’t give me spare times at all! Curse my fate with a high affiliate magic.
“Now now, don’t be so hard on our young master, George. Let him enjoy his liberty while he’s still an imperial knight” The head maid who is more authoritative than her position joins our conversation, Marianne.
“Wait, are you telling me that I am going to be promoted again?” I begin agitated.
“It’s still unofficial, but if your proposal about the efficient method to increase our budget worked, then we can be sure that you'll definitely be in charge of Rav, Sir” George answers.
“Viscount of Rav!” Marry shouts happily. George also nods to show he confirms it.
“Viscount??!” Not Baron?? Do I raise two ranks at once?!
“I can’t wait to call our young master as Lord Balder now~ ah, but I’ll still call you young master because to me you are forever my young master!”
I remember my first arrival at Balder’s mansion, I was still naïve and this woman opened the whole new world to me.
’Come here young master, I’m not going to bite you, I just want to wash your body and putting up clothes for you~’
I really want to turn back time and save my chastity before it’s taken away…
“Then, all the reason to not let you go as you please. We better do some preparation for Lord Balder promotion ceremony, Marianne could you do the arrangement for the party?”
“No no no, it still doesn’t make sense to me, how can I raise two ranks at once?” And how come you be so sure I will raise my rank this soon?
“Apparently, the one who offers your new title is the King himself”
What the hell, “The King??!” I imagine the king posed victory in my head.
“The moment your proposal was accepted, actually His Majesty was going you to promote you as an Earl”
Curse my ears, “EARL??!”
“Your proposal’s very innovative and to make it truly works, The Councils are not confident if a mere Baron can do it swiftly. And accidentally His Majesty himself was present and then His Majesty also joined the discussion”
The King accidentally present on a mere proposal assembly, huh? He got spare times on his sleeve, I envy him.
“I guess the rumor about your magic power and the ancient magus incident did arrive at His Majesty’s ears” Marry adds.
“…Can I reject the offer?”
“You know you cannot and you shall not, Sir”
“…Then I shall accept it?
"Yes, Sir”
“…No matter what I’ll be promoted into Viscount?”
“Yes, Sir, no matter what”
“I can go to Baker Rony, yes?”
“Yes!” “No, that’s a no” The two replies at the same time.
“I’ll take the Yes, see ya Georgy, Marry!” I jump from the window before George can catch me.
I go to the horse stable and get to Janne, my sturdy white horse with bear leather upholstery. We ride together to the town, cross the bridge that separates our mansion with the other buildings, walk down the road to the middle of town where the fountain of hero stands, go to the west where the central market located. When you see a fruit stand with a green sign, go to the left and the third shop in the right is where Baker Rony opens. I hope I’m not late, I really want to taste the brand-new bread that said to be the best bread in the entire Talis Kingdom.
I park Janne on the nearest stable and give her a goodbye kiss, I won’t be long honey. I open the shop’s door and… it’s a full house, should I bring out a royal flush? At this point, I’m afraid if there is still some bread left for me. I go to the counter and ask for the new bread only to get nothing new available. The last bread was sold to the lady who went right before me. Curse you, Georgy! If only he didn’t hinder me to come earlier, I could taste the new bread before I become a Viscount later! I leave the shop with my back bent down. Well, while I’m on it I better go say hi to Maurie, it’s been a while since the last time I saw her.
################################
“Maurieee I miss my booze!” I cried while opening the door
“You’re only allowed to get some juice, Ceecee*” Maurie reply immediately and call me with the embarrassing name which I got when I was 8 years old.
“Cenna! It’s been a while, I miss you~” Samantha runs and hugs me, she got her birthday last week and now she’s 12 years old.
“I’m sorry Sammy, I couldn’t attend your birthday party because I need to conquer some evil wyvern"
“It’s fine, seeing you here right now is enough for me” Her face turns red when she says that.
“You can be more spoiled Sammy, ask him to give you a jewel, pearl one!”
“No mother! A pearl is too much for me”
“Hahaha, I don’t bring any pearl for you, but I have some wyrm’s scale. Here, I made it into a necklace and Happy Birthday!” I put out a gold scales with a silver cord.
“Oh, my! Thank you Cenna!” She jumps happily, and then she looks at the floor hiding her red face. No Sammy, you better not fall for me.
“She will be happier if you give her a ring instead of a necklace, Sir Imperial Knight!”
“No, she’s like my own sister, her ring finger is more fit with a better ring than a scale ring” I emphasize on sister so Samantha doesn’t have a high hope. Her eyes look sad but I can’t help it, noble’s life is not easy for commoners, I’ve tasted it.
“Well Ceecee, what happened? You came with some sour face”
“I didn’t get Rony’s new bread…”
“The new bread is sold really fast, I haven’t tasted one myself. I heard it’s very delicious with a special cheese that melted when you eat it”
“Um, actually I did manage to get one”
“Really?!” Maurie and I in sync.
“Mr. Rony gave me because he couldn’t give me one on my birthday”
She walks to the back and brings out a big round bread with bacon, cheese, pepper and tomatoes on it. The bread was big enough to be sliced into 6 portions.
“It is called Pissa, and it used special cheese called Mosarella”
“Pissa!” Maurie takes a slice and eats it. “Yummy!”
“Mr. Rony said it’ll taste better when it’s warm”
“What are we waiting for!” She takes those slices and put them on bake. About 2 minutes later she serves them on plates. I took one myself, the white stuff melting in my mouth.
“So this is Mosarella! Pissa is so nyummy!” I shriek happily. I must get this Pissa again, I’ll sneak out of the castle, I’ll go incognito, I’ll get it no matter what!
“You guys are so lucky having no political issue in mind…”
“I heard you’re going to be promoted and got your title, ain’t you?” Maurie gives me a glass of grape juice.
“Rumors sure travel fast, huh…” I take a sip of the juice, I love the taste of grape, I wonder if those wines taste same? I’m still underage so I can’t get one, and Maurie pretty strict about it.
“I want to go back being a normal citizen, I want to be a merchant and go to many cities selling some boozes or bread”
“Are you trying to be our competitor? Trading is not as easy as you though, Sissy boy” Now she drops Ceecee and calls me Sissy instead.
“I don’t know how aristocrats work but don’t you looking down on others profession. Nothing is easy in this world, boy”
I think I hit some nerves here. Now my grape tastes like a lemon.
“I think we shall hear his story, mother. Where else he can relax and release his stress?” Oh, Samantha! You’re my little angel!
“Kyaah!” she shrieks but she didn’t resist my hug. Oops, I better release her before it’s too much. Then, I begin to tell them…
“It’s been 6 years since I enter Balder household, I did become close with my family and aides, and I was happy until recently. Works exhausted me, they keep on piling up no matter how fast I did them. I can’t go to the town as often as before, at most I can only go once or twice in a month. Nothing amuses me since they are too stiff-oh there is one, the head maid in my mansion, but she’s the only one and now it bores me…”
“So you got too many works and less entertainment?”
“Yeah, something like that…”
“Why don’t you take some mistress to comfort you?”
Samantha jolted.
“No, Maurie. Do you forget whose child I am?”
“Oh, right”
Yeah, a woman’s affection is out of question for me. I don’t want to make the same problem like my father.
“I heard being a noble makes you good at scheming? Like, when faces some annoying woman you do some sarcasm to make her looks bad?” Samantha curiosity is on a whole new level.
“I did face women of nobility that’s like what you said, but I didn’t sneer at her or anything, instead I asked her for some dance or change the subject like talking about her dress or something like that…”
“Quiet some playboy we got here, huh?” Maurie.
Samantha pout now.
“I prefer smooth-talker, I also did that to some nobleman….”
“So you also swing the other way? Quiet a new discovery we have here!” Maurie!!!
Samantha goes white now.
“Like, I, saiiiiiid!”
****************** Note: read Cenna as Sina, and Ceecee as Sissy
Btw you may know this or not, but the ranks of noble are: King Arch-duke Duke Marquees Earl/Count Viscount Baron
For this story, I divide the authorities as: King: highest ruler Arch-duke: prime minister Duke: territorial authorities Marquees: vice-authorities of Duke, Grand Master of Imperial Knin, ghts (only one) Earl/Count or Viscount: in charge of cities, with Earl/Count as a priority. Commanders of Imperial Knights Baron: assistant of any noble of higher ranks, usually as treasurer, secretary, even aide.
Noble of no ranks is usually pointed as knights, at most an Imperial Knights. A commoner can be a Marshal at most. To be a noble, a commoner needs to marry a noble, but this is a very rare occasion.

pairing: kara/gender-neutral!reader
genre: fluff
summary: winter in canada was cold. beautiful, but cold. it was the perfect time to tuck back in bed, warm mug of hot cocoa on one hand and a good book on the other. the plan was to spend the frigid day in the warm indoors, but there was last minute change: there was a frozen lake that looked relatively safe, so you, kara, and alice decided to ice skate while luther supervised. but hey, if you got to show off while spending time with your loved ones, then who are you to complain?
a/n: figure skating is my guilty pleasure uwu lmfao to be quite honest i used to be able to skate quite good and even managed to spin (badly but hey i spun) when i was younger, but it’s been such a long time that i’ve forgotten how to even move forwards lol so if it wasn’t clear, reader is a figure skater and they’re going to enjoy the winter wonderland w their wonderful girlfriend: kara. i decided to join this old idea w the [ 100 wαчs tσ sαч í lσvє чσu prσmpt chαllєngє ], using dialogue n. 93
also alice is a human because i said so,,
any and all feedbacks are appreciated ^^
you laid reposefully in your bed, wrapped by a multitude of blankets, as you unhurriedly flipped the pages of your book, taking full advantage of this uneventful day. you were leisurely reading when a weight plopped itself on your abdomen, pulling a small « oof » out of you. lifting your book, you found alice sprawled on you, grinning from ear to ear. she called out your name repeatedly, excitement clear in her tone. you couldn’t help but smile with her as you addressed the young girl: « hey kid. what got you so excited? you chuckled.
– [ y/n ]! she exclaimed, you scared me.
– i don’t know about this [ y/n ]... she admitted.
