this is a guide made to help everyone use the most recent technology in rp conversations. several people in the rp i’m in have mentioned being confused about how to work discord and the different features it has. so, this is based on the most recent update to discord. i didn’t go over how to actually type out a chat, i would hope you could figure that part out for yourself. warning: this is a very screenshot heavy post. okay... lettuce begin.

WHAT IS THE DISCORD APP ??

discord is a chat site similar to skype, aim, or google hangouts. it is unique in the fact that it was intended to be used as a game coop chat, and it is completely free with little to no ads! there is a mobile app, a desktop app, and the plain old site. it is also compatible with macs in the case that you have apple products. for the sake of this tutorial, i will be using the desktop app, but all of your settings will transfer over to the website and mobile app versions of your discord.

SETTING UP AN ACCOUNT + BASICS !!

to set up an account you will need an email to verify the account. i used an email that i attach to most of my rp blogs, but you could create a specific email for discord. setting up an account is a little different depending on if you’re doing it on the website or the desktop app.

for the website:

1. go to the discordapp website and select the “open discord” button.

2. it will ask you to write a username, create one that is related to anything you would like it to be. i personally wouldn’t use the name of a specific character as your discord name (and i’ll go over why in a second)

3. it will then open the discord website version, and at the top there will be a banner that says:

4. after clicking “claim account” you will be sent to this portion of the settings screen, input a value for the email and the password section so you can keep your account.

for the desktop app (if you selected “download for windows” on the website:

1. you’ll want to click the “register new account” button at the bottom of the login screen.

2. it will then open to a screen that looks remarkably similar to the one on the settings page. all you’ll need to do from here is input information and then go verify your email.

now, discord will guide you through setting up a personal server (which you can delete if you think you’ll never use it), but i’ll go over that in the next section. let’s first talk about settings.

“setting” yourself up for success:

1. getting to the settings is really easy, just go to the bottom of the server information sidebar, and click the cogwheel.

2. you’ll open on the my account page, which looks something like this.

3. if you click on edit, you’ll be able to change your personal icon, your username, your password, and save it all.

4. next is privacy and safety. this will all depend on how safe you feel with the people you’re interacting with. you can allow dms from people in similar servers, you can have discord scan messages that could be nsfw or harmful, and you can edit who will be able to add your discord id as their friend. my settings are pretty laxed, but if you want to change that please do.

5. i skipped over authorized apps, but you can look into that here it’s a tool for bot use. i will be going over the “connections” tab, though. on this one you can select one of their given apps, and add it to discord for integrations. a lot of twitch streamers use this to help connect the people that use their servers with their video gaming experience. you can attach skype, twitter, reddit, twitch, steam, and more. this is more for discord video gamer users, though.

6. overlay is more for settings related to how you see users in the servers. do you want to see their icons/display names? it is easier to distinguish others if you turn these settings on to display the information.

7. for notifications you can turn the desktop notifications on or off, the specific sounds you want to hear, and whether you want to have text-to-speech for the desktop notifications. i’ll get into how to specifically turn off notifications for specific servers in the next section.

8. keybinds are simply keyboard shortcuts. i don’t have any enabled, but if you want to edit this yourself, give it a go, my friend.

9. text and images is helpful if you would rather not see a preview of links, and also can keep your FPS from dropping if you turn off the preview of images.

10. appearance is another important thing with discord. change the settings to make the look most comfortable to you! there is a light and dark theme option, a way to change up the font and so much more! play around with it and see how it looks to you in the preview.

11. some other sections i wouldn’t mess with unless you’re also going to use it for video gaming are the streamer mode, games, and discord nitro. these are all more focused around streamers and gamers.

SERVERS, DMS, AND PERMISSIONS, OH MY !!

now that you’ve got your account all set up, discord will take you through a bit of a tutorial until you join a different server with more people in it. a lot of rps now are creating group servers, so it might be nice to have an account to . you could also just use it to add other people in the rpc and chat with them! since i won’t really be going over creating an advanced server, please take a look at this tutorial. let’s go over joining a server or adding some friends.

joining a server or creating one:

1. select the plus button on the sidebar.

2. it will pop up with another message, and you’ll want to click “join server”

3. it will ask you for a join link on the next page, ask the person who’s server you’re trying to join for this. or maybe admins will provide you with an instant invite link which will add you... instantly.

to get a server link:

1. click the arrow next to the server title to bring down a drop down menu.

2. in the drop down menu there should be an “invite people” option.

3. it will then pop up with a link that you can copy and paste to send to people. if you hit “never let link expire” then you can keep reusing the link for everyone. otherwise, each link has a day long limit to be used.

4. if you click the cogwheel on the link information pop up, it will give you another pop up of settings that you can edit.

so now you know how to join a server, but how do you create one? i’ve already linked above how to get more complicated with server settings, but heres the basics of creating one.

creating a server:

1. click that little + in the circle again.

2. this time we’re going to select the “create a server” option.

3. once on that, a menu will pop up with several options on what you want your server be like, just make it what you want it to be, my friend.

4. then hit “create” and boom you have a server! as the main admin you can assign roles, nicknames, add more channels to the server for specific conversations etc. for more on that please check this little tutorial and this one too.

you now know how to join and create servers, but what about server settings? this mostly applies to if you own a server, but can also apply to if you’re just in a server with some permissions given to you.

nicknames:

1. in the same drop down bar that you can get to invite people from, there will be an option that says “nickname.” this is a setting that allows you to change your name in each server your a part of to distinguish yourself. it will also replace just showing the username you chose for yourself initially, so if you chose something that doesn’t have your name you can let others know what it is in a nickname.

2. once you click nickname it will come up with what you want to change your name. an rp might ask you to make your nickname something like your moniker and your character name (an example would be “margot // poppy sinclair,” “margot (poppy sinclair),” “margot - poppy sinclair,” or “margot / poppy sinclair.”

okay, now here are just the general settings for a server and what you can edit with all that stuff.

server settings and what they do:

1. to open server settings go to that same dropdown menu i’ve mentioned twice now.

2. it will open on the basic server overview settings. you can change the name of the server here, or adjust an afk channel (which i don’t find necessary, so i wouldn’t mess with the setting but you could), and set how you want your general users to get notifications (they can change this setting by themselves too).

3. i would only mess with moderation settings if you’re worried about members getting out of hand in the messages. if not, leave it on the casual moderation settings already set as the default.

4. audit log is basically a history of everything that’s been changed, added, or deleted on the server. you can’t really mess with this setting much, but it’s helpful to know what’s happened on your server.

5. roles are something only an admin can edit, but they’re cool too. you can set several settings with this, which i won’t be going over for the sake of keeping this short. if you’d like to know more on setting roles read through this. adding a role is like a tiny badge that tells you a bit more about the specific person and what permissions they have in the group.

6. emojis are custom emojis that you’ll be able to use within your server. there is a slot for fifty of them, so you can create your own as a mod, or there is a permission that allows people to create emojis too.

7. invites shows you how many links to invite have been created and how long the link will last.

8. i didn’t go over a few of the settings, that’s because they are more targetted to gamers or they’re easier to understand if you want to look at members or who’s been banned from the server.

personal notification and privacy settings:

1. same drop down menu on the server. and click “notification settings,” obviously.

2. these are my personal settings, i usually only allow notifications for mentions in large servers. because unless you’re going to be in a very small group, your messages are going to be blowing up zero to a hundred real quick!

3. go back to the drop down and select “privacy settings.”

4. now choose whether you want to allow people from a group to dm you or not. i leave this on, that way if i’m in a group rp and i want to plot on discord or need to talk to someone then i can get dms. maybe you’re not cool with that, and it’s totally fine! just change it to your personal preferences.

server settings are easy enough, you just need to get the hang of it. alright, now moving to dms and how to add singular friends.

how to add friends:

1. click the symbol on the sidebar that has three little people.

2. make sure your on the tab with the little guy raising his hand.

3. then you’ll want to put the discordtag of the person your adding into the box. here’s the thing, you need to include the number in there, too, or else it won’t add them!

4. select “send friend request” and wait until your accepted as a friend! once you’ve been added, you can start a dm by going to the “all” tab.

5. click the profile of the friend you want to dm.

6. their information will now show up in the ���direct messages” sidebar, and you can interact with them.

now that you’ve got some friends, message them, add them to your servers, be added to their servers, whatever floats your boat!

EXTRA TIDBITS + WHAT THEY DO !!

now you know the basics of how discord works, but there are a ton of tiny buttons that might not  make sense when first going through. so, let’s explain what each of these small buttons do and why they’re there.

1. the microphone allows you to mute/unmute yourself if you’re ever in a voice channel, toggling this on and off will enable whether others can hear you or not.

2. the headphone set is a toggle option for whether you want to still hear or “deafen” yourself to what others are saying inside a vovice channel.

3. the cogwheel opens to the discord profile settings and your own personal settings (not a server’s settings).

1. the bell toggles on and off whether you want to receive any notifications from the server you’re in. if you turn this on, then you will recieve no notifications at all even for messages that had your mention in them.

2. the pushpin is for pinned messages. moderators may have the ability to select certain messages to be “pinned,” and by doing this very important information can be kept in one place. that way you won’t have to go sifting through all the messages to look back at a certain one.

3. the user icon is another toggle button. this time it toggles whether or not you see the list of members in a server on the sidebar to the right.

4. the search function can look for keywords to find a specific message you may have lost a long time ago.

1. the at symbol is a quick way to look through all the messages you might have been mentioned in. you can set it to show your mentions in just the specific server, or every single one of them. an example of that looks like this:

Question. Has anyone really tried Miitomo? I gave it a try a week or so ago and I’m not surprised it’s being shut down. 

This has all the bad design choices Nintendo often makes with well. Everything. Bad design choices for the miis, bad design choices for their mobile games, and a bad player interaction function. 

How many times will I have to say something like this, you cannot have an online game where the player has to physically be in the area with a person who has the same game. The chances of running into another person with the device and the game with the amount of usage that justifies the average player even interacting with this player is so low it’s comical to even pretend that there will ever be another player to interact with. 

It has to happen all the time in Japan but it doesn't happen in the states. Just from that point alone Miitomo was doomed given that it was designed around you feeding information into your avatar and having that information spewed onto someone else. There’s never going to be that someone else who will play with the app enough to enjoy it with you and if you can’t share this game you can’t enjoy this game either. 

This is the problem with the Mii Plaza games. You’ll more than likely rack up hundreds of coins before you can get your hands on a full set of visitors for just one occasion. That automatically makes all of the games suck because they depend on you running into other players for actual entertainment value. 

That’s the smallest problem with Miitomo by the way. The bigger problem is that Miitomo shows the great misunderstanding in the true value of the Miis. Remember when the Miis inspired the other platforms to create avatars? Everybody liked using Avatars but nobody got value out of them because developers couldn't figure out how to use them and this was no different on the Wii where very few games used miis and when they did it was only supplemental. Rarely was there a good idea or use for them and they always had poor body designs and limited inspiration for character designs. 

After you made Miis of your favorite online personality and your friends and your family and made your best attempt at creating a mii version of your dog they just sat around in Mii Maker. I had a Mii of Rich Evans that was sitting around for years before I got to really use him in Miitopia. This is the case for the majority of Miis created. For years it was just having them for fun, you rarely played with them because there was never a good mii focused game. 

Until Tomodachi Collections came out. In Japan, which inspired Tomodachi Life which came out everywhere else. Now your miis could have something they never really had in previous games. A persona. 

Take it from a person who has had a persona for well over a decade. Half the job of creating an entertaining avatar is just illustrating it. You have to also put it in an environment where it actually comes alive. 

The problem with the majority of avatars in the majority of projects is that you never get a feel for persona itself. It’s just a Papier-mâché mask that is being worn by a person. Digital avatar characters like the miis are even worse given that they don’t have a personality outside of the games and only three games gave them a personality.

Look at this list and the related ones as well. The miis are usually avatars or just generic character replacements. Minimal or non existent roleplay potential. 

I have to assume that they created the avatars simply as a way for the user to connect to the game more. This is why people think the Miis are being pushed to the back and they are. The demographic that is amused by simple avatars of themselves no longer play on these devices. Now the only people who are left are using the miis as roleplay fodder and we need games that embraced that more, not less. 

Miitomo miis had very little roleplay potential due to the restricted environment, lack of entertainment for both the player and the mii, and a very limited interaction with other miis and the apartment complex. Even with you spending all day putting information into your mii you can’t make up for the fact that it doesn't do anything. They opted to create a more social media centered design for the game than just another life sim, but there’s no way of beating Twitter or Facebook as top tier social media apps but you could have competed with the life sim games instead and with a great brand like Tomodachi Life it could have gone somewhere. 

But that’s where it also messes up. 

After watching Nintendo’s attempt at creating a mobile game for a couple years I have something for them. It’s a nice little present. Here ya go. Unwrap it. 

You’re done. You don’t know how to do this market. 

You made Pokemon Go, well Niantic made Pokemon Go and the game design was oversold and the mechanics were not prepared for the sort of volume and shenanigans that a real audience would bring. Their attempt at fixing bugs and getting rid of hackers seemed to wipe out a lot of the player base but at the very least it was cornering a market. 

Mario Run does a horrific job at being a runner. Not only is it beat by runners that are free (and have a Canabelt design so they’re a lot faster and randomized for arcade style play value) the runners that cost money like Rayman Run offer a greater value and a design that understands the player base better. 

Miitomo (and that Animal Crossing game) are life sims but they are loaded with micros transactions and their competition varies from having more content with micro transactions to very little micros transactions and just as many life sim elements. 

This is Talking Tom and his gang’s territory. If you can’t design your Life Sim to be more entertaining than Talking Tom you are wasting your time. At the very least, try to have your Life Sim be as good as The Sims Freestyle. That game sucks for the record but it has almost all the content it would have on a vanilla PC copy of the game which is more than I can say for Miitomo. 

Hold on. I’m getting a vision of the future. 

Mario Kart comes out for the mobile devices. Everyone is excited and ready to play the game and they download it.

The field of view is very small. You’ll have a hard time finding other people to play with but for the first few months you’ll have trouble even logging in, the tracks, rides, and characters will be mostly behind a paywall.

The online play! It’s horrible! So much pop in! 30 frames per second! Eats your phone’s data and battery power up in the course of a single race! Your phone will burn a hole in your hand!

The gameplay is rough and makes those Happy Wheels style car games infinitely more preferable! 

We can’t have this future! 

What was I talking about? Oh right. Nintendo is too reliant on the brand of their games to carry the product in the massively competitive market of mobile games. They don’t maximize the specific potential these games have and they fall for tropes that don’t work when you aren’t the first or most popular app to do them. 

Here’s the question some of you out there might be wondering. Do Miis have a future or are they really being put out to pasture? I dunno. I pretended to read into the future but I’m no actual fortune teller. If I had to make a wild guess I would say that miis do have a future but only if they make sequels to Tomodachi Life and Miitopia. Miitopia seems popular but I haven’t seen the sales figures of it, I know it got a bit roasted in the review section which isn’t good but Tomodachi Life did really well and it also didn’t get hot reviews from people so what I think, 

From here on out. If they want the miis to work they might have to update the legacy character design system. Rather than have the old system from the Wii version of Mii Maker, they need a newer version of Mii Maker that would be compatible with a new line of Mii games that embrace the over design and heavy roleplay aspects people want from the miis. 

Basically update the system for the current demographic and develop games for that demographic. 

That’s the best idea assuming the whole thing isn't just tossed in the bin. That would be a waste. But it wouldn't be uncommon behavior.

Smart Home Picks

Wyze Camera

($19.99): For $20 you might expect this camera to be a piece of junk, but in our two weeks of testing we found it works really well. The camera offers two-way audio, night vision, 1080p resolution, 14-day cloud storage and motion detection. It’s wired and rated for the indoors, but if you want a simple security camera this one is an excellent place to start. With a microSD card (not included) you can even see a time lapse shot of the day, a feature that the more expensive Nest Cam also offers. The camera’s makers licensed the hardware from a Chinese company and have placed their bet on making good software while offering the cheapest prices they can. The team is based in Seattle and hail from Amazon. It doesn’t work with any other smart home platforms today, but Jessie Zhou, director of marketing at Wyze, says the company plans to add support for popular options over time. And for $20, the lack of integrations is not a huge deal killer.

Arlo Pro outdoor 2 cameras and hub

($349.99): For the security conscious homeowner and renters alike, these cameras make for a nice outdoor or indoor option. They are rechargeable, offer 720p video resolution, two-way audio, motion detection and night vision. We leave ours on the roof deck when we have parties and want to keep an eye on children from the Amazon Echo Show or from our phones and then toss them outside or on window ledges when we leave town for vacation. These are not always recording, so they aren’t foolproof. They have to detect motion in order to turn on, and one or two people have told me the cameras missed an event. If you want failsafe security, wired cameras are probably the way to go. That being said, these are good enough, durable, convenient and a decent price.

Google Home

($79 during the holidays): In the smart speaker category, our choice is the Google Home, which has managed to surpass the Amazon Echo at offering responses to everyday inquiries and has mostly met the challenge in the smart home. If you haven’t decided yet on a smart speaker option for the home, for $79 during the holiday season, you can pick up a decent-sounding device that can

control hundreds

of smart home devices and process almost any query you can think of. Plus, it can make phone calls, which turns the Google Home into a de facto land line for people as long as there is internet access and power. My only quibble with this device is that the slanted design of the top means that you can’t always see if the device “heard” your initial voice command.

Sonos One

($174 from 11/23 to 11/27): As an alternative to Google Home, we also recommend the new Sonos One for specific people. For example, this new hands-free speaker

supports Alexa voice controls for your smart home

, as well as for music playback on Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and more. Even better: You’ll have a choice of digital assistants in 2018 when Sonos adds support for Google Assistant. Sound quality is excellent on the Sonos One and you can combine multiple units for multi-room audio. Plus, the Sonos companion app includes a smart configuration option to optimize audio playback for your specific room set up.

Wink Hub 2 ($99): You can buy the Samsung SmartThings Hub for less, but we recommend the Wink Hub 2 for the extra money. This second-gen hub improves over its predecessor with a faster processor, more memory, and dual-band WiFi support. You don’t need to hardwire it to a router either, making it easy to place in the center of your smart home for maximum range of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Zigbee and Z-Wave devices. It’s easy to use the Wink app to add new devices, create schedules or automate devices as well. Local processing means that even if your internet service goes down, Wink can still control your home; a feature that Samsung only just added to its hub. With broad device support, simple setup and the ability to work with either Alexa or Google Assistant, the Wink Hub 2 is a great choice to be the brains of your smartphone.

Ecobee 4 ($199 on sale): Nest may be the most recognizable smart thermostat brand but we think the Ecobee 4 is better. It’s just as easy to install and includes a Power Extender Kit for older HVAC systems. It also has two key benefits: Remote sensors — one included, additional sensors cost $79 per pair — to monitor temperature in additional rooms and a built in microphone/speaker combo that works with Amazon Alexa. The Ecobee 4 is compatible with Apple HomeKit so you’re covered regardless of your hub or smartphone platform.

Google Wi-Fi ($289 for a three pack / $249 on Black Friday at Best Buy): Unless you need super advanced router features, the Google Wi-Fi mesh network units are a great addition to any home. They’re simple to set up and less expensive than most other competing products. The three pack covers 4,500 square feet and creates a single network for your devices, making them a better choice than older network extenders. Although you use Wi-Fi to connect the units, each has an Ethernet port for wiring a device as well. Some standout features include scheduling a Wi-Fi pause for family time, guest network support and the ability to prioritize your wireless signal to a specific device for a certain length of time.

Nvidia Shield TV ($149 on Black Friday) and Samsung SmartThings Link ($39.99): This recommendation might seem like it doesn’t belong on an IoT gift guide but bear with us while we explain. The Nvidia Shield TV is primarily a powerful Android TV streaming box and Chromecast unit that supports 4K HDR playback with ease. You can also play Android games on your big screen with the optional (but recommended) game controller included in the $169 Black Friday bundle. Nvidia also offers 1080p console games through a monthly $8 subscription fee: These titles are played on Nvidia’s cloud servers and streamed to you without any noticeable lag, provided you have a fast enough broadband connection. Here’s where the IoT part comes in on this double-duty device. The Shield TV supports Google Assistant voice commands through a microphone found in both the remote and the game controller. And Nvidia also plans to sell small plug-in microphones you can put throughout your home to use Google Assistant in any room. Lastly, you can add the new Samsung SmartThings Link USB stick for $40 which adds Zigbee and Z-Wave support, turning the Nvidia Shield TV into a fully functional SmartThings hub. For the kids Kano motion sensor kit ($29.99): This gizmo is made by the same company that makes the Kano build-it-yourself computer for kids. The sensor plugs into the USB port on a computer and lets the user wave their hand in front of it to make music, control games and more. It’s designed for the younger set, with kids as young as five likely to understand what the device does and start interacting with it. My 11-year-old thought it was a little young for her and was not excited to see the coding challenges that Kano has set up to help youngsters learn how to program the games that use the sensor. “Oh no, coding again!” However, with a less jaded audience the games are fun, and the product is simple and intuitive to use. I’ll also add that the Kano community is wholesome and full of good child-safe computing activities.

Littlebits R2D2 Droid Inventor Kit ($99.95): I have not tested this device, but we’re huge fans of Littlebits in this house so I’m excited about this package. Basically, the company has combined several of its bits into a Star Wars-themed Droid to excite kids. It solves one of the challenges my daughter and I had with the original Littlebits package, which was we had all these servo motors, lights and computers, but no real plan on what to do with them. We overcame that, but the cool part of this toy is that once the magic of the Droid wears off, the nits can be used to build whatever your kid desires. Or not. Either way, they still have a fun toy to play with. I’d recommend this for older kids, roughly in the tween demographic. Stocking stuffers

TrackR Pixel ($49.99 for 5): Bluetooth tracking devices are ideal for purses, wallets, backpacks, keys and any other personal item you don’t want to lose. The TrackR Pixel is roughly the size of a quarter so it’s easy to attach to just about anything without calling attention to itself. Once paired with the TrackR app on your smartphone, you can use Bluetooth or even enable an LED or a sound on the TrackR Pixel to find that lost item. It works in reverse too: By pressing a button on the TrackR Pixel, your phone will sound a tone. No more searching around the house for your smartphone! If you leave something behind while on the go, TrackR crowdsources data so if another TrackR app user passes by your lost item, you’ll see where it is in the app.

Flosstime ($39.99): This might be an insulting gift for an adult but it makes a good gift for a teen or child. Basically, this is a connected dental floss dispenser that suctions to your mirror and has an LED smiley face or frowny face on it. When you grab the floss, it will dispense the right amount automatically and then the frown turns upside down to cheer you on for flossing. As someone who doesn’t floss like she should I look at this as something that would compel me to actually floss in ways that my thrice-annual dental check ups do not. Quick Guide

This is just a quick how to find your machines specs for those who done know, as well as how to check your drivers for your machine. I am not saying I'm an expert, and you may know better than me, if so please kindly add on and help everyone get the best knowledge they can. This is pretty long so if you don't want to read, I suggest you keep scrolling for a bit.

First, lets start with task manager, this is pretty much your best friend when it comes to diagnostics it will tell you a lot about your machine, firstly what is using what. Whether its a background application/program that's consuming your RAM(memory) or Network, or if its an open application/program or if its the CPU that is struggling to keep up with how many threads it is trying to run. 

Here's a basic idea of what it'll look like, when I'm specifically trying to see what is using the RAM, which is going to be (hopefully) the current app/program you are running. (Yes, I know, stinky bad person, playing Blizzard games. Piss off)

Here's the screenshot which tells you what your basic CPU specs are and if you click on the Memory graph it will give you those specs as well (I would do it for the others to show you what I mean, but that may take up way too much space and make this post even longer). If you have a look at the area in red, it shows you how many cores your machine has and how many treads its running etc. this basically tells you what the CPU is currently running in general terms, and again click on the others and it will give you similar information.

Another way to find out your base specs and what version of windows you are running is to go into the control panel and go to the System tab. Quick shortcut so you don't have to run around control panel trying to find it, it to right click on the “This PC” tab and select properties. this will take you directly to it. Or you can right click on the start button and click system as well. either way it will take you to the same place. 

Hey would you look at that, there's my windows version, oh cool. and look there's what processor I have, oh awesome. Oh wow, that's so cool. (this is highly sarcastic btw. I know its not common knowledge and am not making fun of anyone.) So there are the basic ways to find out your system specs. No it probably isn't the best way and it most definitely isn't the only ways, but they are quick and easy methods (I hope).

Now as for the drivers, in the screenshot above, you can see something underlined in blue, its called Device Manager, this tells you what your machine has installed, hardware wise not software (that's why its called “device” manager, not system manager) This is the best place to see your different parts of your machine, up to and including your processor. Its also one of the ways to see if the drivers are up to date, as well as a way to role back drivers if there are any compatibility issues. When you open it up it looks something like this: 

This is pretty much everything that is installed and how to find its drivers. This is where you can manually update every driver you have, however I have found a nice application that will tell you what drivers need to be updated, because sometimes the operating system doesn't want to work with us and actually update what it needs to. (Downside with this, is that you can only update 2 drivers a day) It is called DriverMax.

Back to updating the drivers through the device manager. Simply go to what the device is, in my example its the processor, so you click on it, and it will probably give you a break down of what exactly there is in it.

In this case I get 4 items as my machine has 4 logical cores. Right click on the item you wish to update and select update driver. This should pop up

Select “Search automatically […]” and then let it run its checks, 

it will more than likely give you this screen when done, meaning your driver is up to date, or at least it thinks it is. Don't bother with clicking “search for [..]  on Windows Update”, just click close. And there you have it, the way to check your drivers. It isn't the best method again, but it will do.  (yes I didn't show you how to roll them back, but this is very dangerous to do without making sure you have everything backed up, so please if you are going to attempt it, make sure you can restore the backup , incase something goes wrong and the machine dies on you)

And finally how to check to see if your Operating System (OS)is up to date. Yes I know you probably know how to do this, but I'm just going to show you anyway. And may I say that please for the love of god and everything holy, keep your goddamned OS up to date. yes I know it sucks having to update, and restart and update, but it is generally a very good idea to keep it up to date, unless you want your machine to decide that it doesn't like you as an owner and die on you. Think I'm joking? I'm not, the amount of machines I've had to fix because some idiot refused to do the updates is rather high. Like really high. Stupidly high, so keep doing those updates. Although don't do the updates to the new versions (e.g. don't update from 1909 to whatever new one they bring out in April/June) for at least 2 months so that they can fix any issues that may arise from the ew version that they hadn't considered before and so that the companies that made the parts of the machines can update the drivers if they need to. 

Back to how to check for updates, Go to your settings, its the little gear on your start bar, and then click on update and security

there should be an option to say check for updates, or to say restart. Or it could be like mine and say resume updates, either way click on it.  I don't care if it says you last checked for updates 0 seconds ago, do it because they don't know what they are talking about. 

Alrighty, clicked on it? it should now either show you the list of updates you need to do/are doing, restart your machine, or say that you are up to date. (If it said last check for updates 0 seconds ago and it still says it, I'm sorry I yelled, and you were right, but could you click it just one more time for me?) Once it has done the updates and restarted (please remember to restart it once the updates are done, this is just as important as actually doing the updates, but only if it asks you to.) you're done with updates for the week. Please remember to run your updates every week, or at least every month.
