im not saying the RWBY anime remake was made by someone who watched hbomb's video but ive already checked so many of his critiques off the list in the first 12 minutes like:
using the first four scenes to actually set up who the characters are and what drives them with additional dialogue and a massive rework of the White trailer
see also: directly comparing Ruby and Yang's healthy familial relationship to Weiss' abusive one, setting up the character dynamics before they even meet
aura is explained in the process of the first-on screen fight within like three sentences instead of Pyrrha's lengthy, clunky monologue to Jaune
addressing why Adam doesn't just chase Blake down after she cuts the train loose
the dust store fight is re-worked so we not only get the word 'semblance' in it instead of much later in the show, but Ruby doesn't use super strength to defeat the first grunt. we also know why the fuck she's in there in the first place!
Ruby has an explicit character flaw! she can oven get over-excited about a specific goal easily lose focus on other tasks because of it.
like just!! ugh!! this is reminding me of why i used to like RWBY in high school!!
#RLPersonalAdventure#RWBY: Ice Queendom#hbomberguy#oh my god they even address where the fuck Ruby gets taken after the dust store robbery⊠like it's now a police station not just a Room#THEY MUST'VE WATCHED IT#oh my god did the original show ever explain how Blake got into Beacon

Interdimensional Moms part 2
Part 1 <-
Yang:Okay Weiss, your turn.
Weiss:What!? Why me?
Blake:Because youâve been bouncing in your seat all through Yangâs story. You clearly want to gush about your kids.
Weiss:Pffft, What!? Nooooo, a little. Hehehe I canât believe Iâm that obvious. *smiles*
Ruby:Aww look at you, I never believe Weiss Schnee could look as warm as campfire.
Yang:And wearing mom jeans!? Little jealous that you still look completely gorgeous. Why does mom energy make you prettier?
Weiss:What can I say? Iâm great. As far as my universe goes, I argue that Iâm the strongest mom!
Blake:Such a bold claim.
Weiss:I carried twins! *points to self* this body handled two buns in the oven!
Ruby:Couldnât be me. *shutters* Iâd sooner loose an eye. Speaking of eyes, your scar has a friend. Got this whole upside down cross basically.
Weiss:Oh that? Thatâs uhhhh- how would I even explain this?
Yang:And your hair! Itâs short!
Ruby:Yeah youâre just a surprise all over.
Blake:Guys, let her start from the beginning!
Ruby and Yang:Oh right. *covers mouths*
Weiss:(Yep, theyâre the same sisters anywhere.) Thank you Blake. Now then...a good starting place? Well I suppose I could lay the ground work of Jaune and I getting better acquainted. It was about two weeks into reaching Atlas. Winter learned I got impaled and berated me not giving any kind of thanks. Since I had waited so long to do so, words wouldnât do for her standards and she made me take him to a proper dinner. I think it was that night we actually talked openly to each other. A piece of me was annoyed at first because I thought heâd get the wrong idea again. But...he didnât. He was just happy to spend time with me. Thatâs when I realized he had changed a bit *red* and apparently I changed too. Sigh, because that annoyed feeling was actually me forming a crush.
Blake:Looks like you changed more than he did. I think we can all agree that weâre pretty rough to deal with at Beacon in the beginning?
Yang:Hell yeah!
Ruby:Preach! Hehe, but it meant you grew the most too.
Weiss:Hey! Youâre all assuming that I was terrible! Who knows, I could a Saint compared to your Weiss. Maybe I was a sweetheart at Beacon.
RBY:.....
Yang:Were you?
Weiss:*red* Iâll never tell.
Blake:(Thatâs just a no...) Two weeks into Atlas huh? I bet feelings raged whenever the whole place was under attack huh?
Weiss:W...What attack? Barely anything happened in Atlas.
Blake:Excuse me?
Ruby:Pfft what? Youâre joking right? There wasnât any threat of things falling out the sky or war threats?
Weiss:No? We showed up, put the relic in vault, and took time fortifying things while planning with Ironwood. The most exciting thing was a grimm wave and two of Salemâs goons showing up at a ball, but we handled that.
Ruby:....I...thatâs...oh my head.
Blake:So what youâre saying is time in Atlas was a piece of cake?
Weiss:Well I had to deal with my father and and a lot of other family drama so I wouldnât say it was cake. It was actually very stressful.
Yang:Well I think we found the massive shift between worlds. Atlas was different. I would say I dealt with anything like falling kingdoms. Atlas for me was one long Mission Impossible sequence. Espionage, jail break, fake deaths, but please continue with your love story.
Weiss:You sound a little envious. Anyways there isnât too much of anything to tell in that part. Dates, fighting together, sibling healing, I was disowned publicly, Penny was being amazing-
Blake:You were disowned?
Ruby:(Penny is...alive? Huh, well, imagine that?) .....
Yang:*whispers* You okay Rubes?
Ruby:Yeah, processing. Hey Weiss? Not to control the narrative or anything, but how is your Ruby exactly? I get the feeling sheâs quite different from me somehow if things like the adventure in Atlas are different.
Weiss rubbed her chin. She could tell the Ruby in front of her was pretty perplexed by the differences so far. In fact, Weiss could tell mentioning Penny made them all flinch a little. It was safe to assume they all hadnât heard that name in a very long time. It made her feel a little bad. Did she somehow get a more ideal world?
Weiss:I think I might be able to answer that if you could humor me by getting a little further into my worldâs reality? I donât know how but I do get a since the two of you might have a key difference.
Ruby:Iâm all ears.
Weiss: Blake, Iâll circle back to being disowned a little later. Itâs one of the biggest reasons I am who I am now. Letâs see now, ah, the plan. After Atlas was infiltrated it was hard to save face to the rest of Remnant. That was until the world learned about Salem. It was a secret that was doing more harm than good at this point. On that day, our journey really began for us. Team RWBY wasnât just four girls and their friends. It was one of four four girls commanding troops, organizing meetings, rallying others. We were the face of a revolution: along with JNPR of course.
Ruby:The world just...believed in Salem?
Weiss:There were plenty skeptics, but itâs harder not to believe it. Pen- our winter maiden, showed off magic. Then the others on our side followed the example. We had two relics to show off from the start, and a variety of ways to explain questions throughout history that nobody could answer before. We gave humanityâs suffering a face. People were more than eager to cling to it. From that point it was hard for Salem to make a move that wouldnât give further validity to our story.
Ruby:An army huh, lead by us?
Weiss:Yep, mainly you when it came to the battlefield. You were anxious at first and definitely made moves that you regretted. But...after some time and experience, you stood tall in front of dozens to give a speech the night of the final battle. I still get chills. There wasnât an eye that wasnât on you. A person who didnât want to march into battle with you. I donât think I ever seen you more sure of where you were meant to be.
Ruby:Is that so? Hmm, I think...I think I get it now. Your Ruby mustâve stumbled quite a bit, but had people by her consistently. It was otherâs strength that enabled her to get stronger. How old was she when the war was over?
Weiss:It ended on her twenty first birthday.
Ruby:Makes sense. An army isnât made in a day. Plans and caution for everyone involved. A united force like that sounds like a thing Oz dreamed of.
Weiss:Actually, it was. My world beat Salem by gaining the relics. The gods witnessed the effort the world put in and stripped her of immortality. It was actually thanks to you that Salem went peacefully. Instead of damning her to a cruel fate, the gods let her pass on to her kids per your request. After that, gods and magic came back. Both are still mysterious. The gods are hard to find and thereâs only one person born with magic so far.
Yang:Magic is a thing there!? Thatâs so unfair! Just imagine me with more fire!?
Weiss:Like you need it!? Youâre already like a generator. Life after Salem wasnât any calmer really. Terrifying grimm lurked where their could, an entire new way of life had been dropped on society, and even the world itself seemed to react. Weather has been more intense as of late. There was a lot things to keep people busy. Ruby being her usual self, started hunting. Blake used the momentum of faunus and humans working together to further her equality agenda, and Yang helped both of you out.
Yang:Look at me! Iâm a great girlfriend and sister!
Blake:*mumbles* There at least.
Weiss:Yeah. Oscar and Penny decided to embarrass more of normal lifestyle, mostly. Penny went back to being protector of Mantle, but had way more free time to be a normal girl. Both of them had gotten really close over the years and eventually married.
Ruby:*wide eyed* Awwww, good for them! I always had a feeling those two would hit it off.
Weiss:They werenât the only ones. You may have been busy, but you always made time for Whitley. The two of you were dating since our original trip to Atlas. There wasnât a problem that either of you didnât come to me for. You know hard it is to navigate other peopleâs relationships when youâre lost in your own? The blind was leading the blind. Worked out though. You were probably the prettiest bride out of all of us. Then again, you went ours and literally took notes.
Ruby:Hehe, that sounds exactly like something Iâd do. You havenât talked much about the charmed life after the war for you.
Weiss felt her face heat up. She placed her head on the table as if she gave up on something.
Yang:Yeah! Give us the scoop!
Weiss:Charmed isnât what Iâd call my life exactly. I was disowned, completely cut off. Even though I made my own mark in history, itâs not like people were gonna roll out red carpets. The world had to rebuild, and I needed a roof over my head. Thus began the modest life of Weiss Schnee, owner of a two bedroom Argus apartment. Fancy clothes a food were no more. Just clearance sales and two for one. Honestly, I didnât hate. But thatâs mainly because I wasnât living alone.
Blake:Jaune?
Weiss:Living back home was just as unappealing for him as it was for me. That and the fact that I couldnât cook for shit was concerning, to say the least. Moving in and splitting rent just made sense. We werenât dating yet technically, but.....it didnât take long for the relationship between us to...expand.
Yang:I cannot believe a Weiss Schnee finally caved to tall blonde and scraggly. I should be jealous, but Iâm strangely proud of Jauneâs achievement. Itâs like the first time I lost to him. I was upset, but man did he work for that win.
Weiss:Took about a month before all of you had learned just what the living situation was like and man did you three let the teasing begin? *smiles* it was fun though. If I had to wrong about something then Iâm glad it was about me not thinking a person is reliable. Especially since theyâve bailed me out of trouble many times. Normal life had its pitfalls. We were constantly working to pay rent. Sometimes one of us had to work harder. Getting sick was disastrous, of long term assignments. Whatâs the relationship I have with Whitley in the other worlds?
Ruby:Casual. The two of are always throwing ideas back and forth to help the company.
Blake:The two of you are fine. Iâm not too sure how much you actually hang out, but you both are pretty snarky whenever youâre together.
Yang:Thick as thieves. That man was always shifting money and finding sneaky ways to let us know when important things popped up.
Weiss:Good, thatâs really good. *exhales* I canât count the times he sent money without father knowing. Iâm glad we reconnected. Without his and everyoneâs help, I donât think I wouldâve managed. Especially when mom died...
Ruby:Oh. I...Iâm sorry to hear that.
Weiss:Itâs bound to happen when you drink the way she did. But yeah, didnât handle it any easier. Between that and stressing over money, I really got overwhelmed often. I was very glad I didnât live alone. Even if I didnât want to talk about things, Jaune was always there to listen. I think it was around that time I realized just how in love I actually was with him. He makes me happy. That idiot mustâve known how much of a weakness I had for him. It was only a few months later that he proposed.
The simple memory of Jaune asking her under a street light on a cold yet peaceful night, made Weissâs face a healthy shade of red. A gentle smile was all she could make thinking about it. A smile that left everyone stunned. They had never seen Weiss look so warm. So genuinely filled with love, happiness. To think she was once called Ice Queen? This one really did look like an Angel. Weiss quit daydreaming and got a little embarrassed.
Weiss:Uh, sorry! I guess I little mushy there. Iâve been told Iâve gotten pretty sappy through the years.
Blake:I think thatâs beautiful.
Yang:Seriously. Iâm...speechless really.
Ruby:A hardworking Weiss that struggled making ends meet. I gotta say that you look good doing it.
Weiss:Yeah well, that time has passed. My father got sick and in an attempt to âclear his consciousâ or whatever he was feeling, he put me back in the family. I only saw him once when he was on his deathbed. Truthfully, I donât visit my parentâs grave. I wanna say old emotions donât get stirred up, but thereâs certain feelings towards people that just canât die I guess.
Yang:Thatâs fair. Who knows, maybe you just need a decade or two?
Weiss:Hehe, perhaps. However, before I got my fortune back, I was granted an either better one. Two in fact. That sly knight of mine managed to overachieve like he always does and give us a boy and girl.
Blake:I got a sneaking suspicion that you werenât upset?
Weiss:Not for one second! I love my babies. My darling little Nick and Summer Schnee. One named after our grandfather, and Jaune and I are both really thankful for all that Ruby has done for us, so our daughter got named Summer. It meant a lot. My Ruby...she canât have kids, or I should say getting and staying pregnant is extremely difficult.
Ruby:...*sniffling* These arenât tears by the way. Just dust.
Weiss:My Ruby cried.
Ruby:Oh I bet! Thatâs some powerful stuff. Probably ugly cried too. Someone please say something? *misty eyed* Fuck, man that was a lot. *puts hood up* give me a sec, please keep going. *holding Yangâs hand*
Yang:Weiss, werenât you a little scared about your living situation?
Weiss:It was a weird thing. We talked about having a family before hand. Money was always a concern, as well space; but I also knew that I did want to have a family of my own one day. So when the day came that the nurse told me I was pregnant, I shouldâve been more worried. I wasnât. All I felt was joy. Maybe it was because I had faith we could handle anything. We did have you all to help. Yang, you might as well be a superwoman honestly. You have been so amazing throughout my life.
Yang:Aye! I really love this other me.
Blake:What about me?
Weiss:You remain the most sensible person in my life and I thank you for it. Everyone else is crazy.
Blake:Yeah thatâs pretty on brand. *smiles*
Ruby:Picture please?
Weiss gladly pulled out her scroll and showed off her children. It was quick to see both of them had gotten their fatherâs dorkiness. They stood in front of the camera playfully winking and were pretending to take a bite out the gold medals they had around their necks. It was crazy how much Summer looked like her mother, but clearly had Jauneâs eyes. Her brother on the other hand had the Schnee eyes and messy Arc hair. The two looked like barrels of fun. Then there was the man himself, Jaune Arc. He looked from the one in Yangâs photo. His hair resembled his days traveling to Haven and he was clean shaven, but he was noticeably healthier. It wasnât even a physical thing much, though he did look good. He just seemed more vibrant.
Yang:Mine is cuter.
Weiss:Yours looks like your dad with the scruff.
Yang:Can you not?
Blake:How old?
Weiss:Sixteen. Little devils want sports car. Iâm not dealing with that. Nick is really good at figure skating and is the oldest, so heâs the heir. Summer decided to be a little like her mother and pursue singing. Doesnât have my voice though, but her range is better than me. Iâm jealous. Both of them are always pretty decent in a fight if I do say so myself. Sigh, they grow up so fast. They still have a lot of growing to do though. Teenagers...
RBY:Preach...
Ruby:Everything okay though? Nothing too tough going on?
Weiss:Can I lie and say yes?
Yang:Hey I unpacked my baggage. Unload yours.
Weiss let out a large sigh. She looked at her kids lovingly, but had a smile that seemed...somber. All of her energy was brought down a bit and it showed.
Yang:Umm if itâs too much-
Weiss:Itâs fine. It might be a little therapeutic to talk about it. Personally, I donât Iâm doing all I really can do. When they were very young, we all took a trip to go skating at a frozen lake. While I was there I found this strange ice dust that Iâve never seen before. Nick and Summer had gotten into a fight and by accident, Nick set off the dust. The shrapnel from it hit everyone, but Summer had it the worse. Iâm talking it was lodged in her in multiple places. Not to mention the blast sent her flying into the water. I was hit so hard that I nearly blacked out. Thankfully, Jaune was the furthest and dove into the water while I managed to get Nick. He avoided a lot of it due to distance and was winded more than anything.
Ruby:Christ...
Blake:How young?
Weiss:Five. We rushed so fast to the hospital as soon as we could. The dust in Summer was freezing her until Nick activated her semblance and most of the shards got used up. Still, Summer ended up hospitalized for almost a year. Surgeries, comas, seizures; it was difficult to put it lightly. That picture doesnât show it but she has puncture scars across her body, and a slight scar under her jawline she covers with makeup. That dust, though highly dangerous, it also healed her eventually. Summer had virtually no chance of survival. Not even counting the organ damage, that water shouldâve put her into shock. But...she made a full recovery, on paper.
Yang:On paper?
Weiss:Several years later, Summer came in contact with the dust again and she...changed. Her eyes looked like mine, her light blonde hair went white, and she went mad. Her scars glowed with the dust that was still in her system and Summer started attacking everyone. I saw my twelve year old just use ice that was cold enough to burn. My extra scar is from me trying to restrain her. In the end it took my gigas pinning her down before she came to her senses. Summer had no memory of it. She said all remembered was feeling cold and hearing her own laughter. It wasnât long after that it kept happening. Any time she got cold, this other...thing would come out. It eventually called itself Shiva.
Blake:Shiva? So...itâs a multiple personality?
Weiss:We donât know. Thereâs so many inconsistencies. We got her checked up by the best and every test was normal. Her brain looks normal. But any time Shiva comes out, her blood turns blue and all she wants to do is hurt us. Shiva and Summer are even aware of each other now. Thereâs almost no day where Summer doesnât hear Shiva in her head, wrestling for control. Between that, people at school who hate her, the scars, everything; Summer has become pretty reserved. She barely wants to go to school and sheâs depressed most days. Nowadays she doesnât open up about it outside of therapy. I...I can connect with her. Not in the way that matters.
Yang:I...shit, I donât know what to say to that.
Weiss:Thatâs okay, few do. Weâve gotten good at preventing situations that get Summer cold but itâs through trial and error on something we know nothing about. Even with how far weâve gotten, thereâs a looming fear in everyoneâs heart. Make no mistake though, that doesnât stop any family from loving her with everything, but the mental strain of it all is more than anyone should deal with. Nick is kind soul. He blames himself for this and is constantly doing all he can to be there for everyone and put on this brave face, but he suffers inside. For a time, he went to therapy. Your sister almost killing you is a visceral experience. Getting him to sleep and take a break is like telling a fish not to swim. He is pretty open about this though, which helps a lot. Itâs just...how do convince somehow theyâre good enough when they think theyâre not?
Ruby and Blake:You canât....
Weiss:Exactly. Itâs so...*tearing up* How am I failing at helping my kids worse than my own mother?
Yang:And thatâs where I draw the line. *stands up* Now I canât begin to fathom dealing with a a situation like this, and what Iâm about to say is gonna be a little hypocritical but I really donât care. Weiss, the last thing you are is a bad mother. I could tell immediately from the way you are that there hasnât been a single as a parent that you havenât made a choice without your kids in mind. I get feeling like thereâs a gap that disconnects you from there; but the fact you keep your arms stretched out to bridge it makes you mother of the year in my eyes! Donât believe for a second youâre a bad mother. Your the gold standard!
The room filled with silence for a moment. Weiss felt a lump form in her throat as she fought back tears that she eventually had to wipe away. She tried letting out a small laugh, but with it came more tears that ran down her face. Weiss couldnât tell if it was from Yangâs words, or the stress. All she knew was that right now, she felt very thankful for being here.
Weiss:Damn it Yang, making me cry is something youâve always been good at. Maybe thatâs why I look up to you so much?
Yang:*red* Y-You what?
Weiss:My Yang, I downplayed just how much I adore her. Her daughter, Veronica, sheâs got her fair share problems that stresses Yang out, but I never see her stop trying to connect with her. Even when sheâs sad itâs like itâs only for a second, then youâre trying twice as hard. Itâs amazing. If Iâm being honest, and this is embarrassing, but I kinda picked up a mother from you. Youâve always been a bit motherly.
Ruby:Sheâs right.
Blake:Mom energy since day one.
Yang:Really? *rubs head* I was just being myself. Never really thought about it. Now then, wipe those tears! Itâs upsetting that you look pretty why you cry. Meanwhile I look like a hot mess, and not in the fun way.
Weiss:*wiping face* Oh please, I donât wanna hear that from someone whoâs never needed make up. Those genes of your went to Veronica. Kids a genuine beauty. Sheâs just angry all the time.
Yang:Yeah that sounds appropriate... Weird to think I have a daughter thatâs not Yujin. Wish I could see her.
Blake:Me too. Though I think Iâd be overwhelmed seeing all my different kids. Iâd probably want them all.
Ruby:My hands are full with ones I have and I wouldnât say Iâm juggling them well, so I donât need other kids from universes. Iâd be so stressed.
Weiss:Especially if theyâre violent.
Ruby:Yeah, that would bad....
Weiss:Phew, I do feel a bit better. Even though I said all those things, my family still had good times. Itâs not tense and we joke around like everyone else. As a family, weâre happy. We just have shit we gotta sort through.
Blake:Rich or poor, life has certain things that hit everyone. Is Jaune doing well.
Weiss:Yeah, he gets through to Summer pretty well, and heâs typically calm when it comes to giving guidance. He had his fears, but thatâs why Iâm here. We confide in each other.
Blake:May you and everyone else find a light at the end of the tunnel.
Ruby:Hey Weiss. Does....actually, never mind. Forget it.
Yang:We both know thatâs not happening. Spit it out.
Ruby:I was just about Shiva. Iâve encountered weird things in my world, but this is unique. I was wondering if you have any positive experience with her.
Weiss:Not a single one. Here since of enjoyment in the displeasure of my children is a thing we disagree on. Though....her eyes, they do throw me off. For some reason, they donât match her joy.
Blake:Maybe that part is still Summer. Eyes are the window to the soul and all that jazz.
Weiss:Maybe? I hope the kids are okay right now. I wonder what theyâre up to?
xxxxx
Summer:WHATâS UP VALE!!!!!!!!
A massive crowd screams âwhatâs up Summerâin excitement. Flashing lights and chanting fansâs voices make the sold out venue shake with their passion. Summer can only bask in it. Thereâs no better feeling than when sheâs on stage. She looks to herself excitedly. This one was extra special. Nick comes out on stage with a base around him and a second microphone.
Nick:WE CANâT HEAR YOU!!!!
The crowd chants louder. Summer responds by starting a rift on her guitar. She faces Nick with a smug look. Yes, having him on stage is always a joy, but that didnât mean Summer wanted him hindering or stealing the show.
Summer:Well look whoâs here!? Atlasâs favorite son! Think youâre ready to play with the kids up here. This isnât your normal stage.
Nick smiled. He responded by playing the bass and letting the audience speak for him. Summer was chessing fool. Slowly she bopped up and down, urging him to do the same. It wasnât long before they in sync. Drums, piano, and other background musicians began building up the tune as planned. The twins whipped around to face the crowd.
đ¶Get down! We won't let you go!
This time, can you bring us down?
Back up! fly far through the sky
BLACK ROVER!
Let's go! All together now
And at last this world can't slow us down
For now, let's dye it all in black
BLACK ROVER!đ¶
The two stood back to back...
đ¶As more join and stand beside me,
The void doesn't feel so empty!!!!!
I know there is much more in store
Let's open that door -!đ¶
Nick looked over his shoulder and saw Summer doing the same thing. This was gonna be one for the books. Jaune watched from backstage with one of the stagehands.
Stagehand:Should we tell them to save their energy? This charity event is six hours.
Jaune:Nah, let them have fun.

RWBY Grimm Guardians Arc 2: Beaconâs Fragile Light Ch II
Hey guys! Welcome back and I apologize for the LONG-AS-FUCK WAIT! This is the second chapter of Beaconâs Fragile Light. Now then...a couple of changes.
After some thought, Iâve decided to use only certain chapters of the show in the fic. Everything else will be as original as possible. This chapter takes place during The Emerald Forest and Players and Pieces. As usual, please enjoy and give constructive criticism. Thank you!
Disclaimer: I donât own RWBY or itâs characters.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(In Emerald Forest)
Needless to say, Gambol and Crescent were somewhat surprised by todayâs events. Ozpin had given them, their wielders, and four others an assignment; find their partner as they group went through the Emerald Forest. Due to the weapons being part Soul Grimm, they could tell whether or not their wielders had a partner. Ember smirked, âSeems like Yang and Blake have partnered up.â âAh, good!â Arktis smiled.
Crescent seemed to be in a daze, due to her not getting much sleep last night. âCres?â Gambol called out, grabbing the taller Weapon Spiritâs attention. âHuh? Yeah?â She asked. âI totally heard everything.â The three other women each gave the red-clad Weapon Spirit a glance. Arktis sighed, âWhatâs on your mind, hun?â Crescent went silent and looked down, before saying, â.....MemoriesâŠ.â
She then sat down on a pile of leaves, saying, âSoâŠ.I had...dreams that I think wereâŠmemories of my past life.â The three women nodded, motioning her to continue. âI was at...Beacon and I was with...Qrow, I think. As well as TaiyangâŠ.â Crescent said. Gambol and Arktis each raised an eyebrow, before Ember explained, âQrow is Ruby and Yangâs uncle. Taiyang is their father.â âGotcha.â Gambol said with a nod.
âThere was...one other person.â Crescent said, catching Emberâs attention. âShe...looked familiar. Like I...had a history with her beforeâŠ.â Before she could continue, the group were interrupted by Grimm. The four women jumped, all grabbing their weapons. Crescent looked at the pack of Grimm and noticed that they looked familiar. âWhat are they?â She asked.
âGrimm Sapiens.â Arktis said, albeit somewhat surprised. âI didnât think they existed.â Just then, Crescent saw images of her and the mysterious woman fighting against creatures that looks similar to the Grimm Sapiens. She felt extreme pain in her abdomen, causing her to hiss. Ember looked at her, concerned, âAre you alright?â The red clad woman didnât answer as she held her head as pain throbbed through it, causing her think that it would crack open. She didnât even notice the three women calling out to her in worry as she passed out.
Thatâs when the Grimm began to charge at the Weapon Spirits, using the distraction as an advantage. Immediately, Ember brought Crescent to a shadowed part of the forest as Gambol and Arktis fought against the Grimm Sapiens. Despite being outnumbered, the two Weapon Spirits were able to defeat the horde and went to check on Ember and Crescent. âHow is she?â Gambol asked. The blonde sighed, âWell, sheâs breathing. Thank the gods.â
âHow did she pass out?â Arktis asked. âDid she remember something?â âMaybe.â Ember said. âShe also probably experienced phantom pain as well.â The Schnee nodded, âSo now what?â Ember bit her lip and went silent. Gambol sighed, âYou donât know, do you?â âIt was never this bad before.â The blonde said. âShe usually has nightmares, but thatâs about it.â The two other women nodded as Gambol asked, âSo, do the Grimm Sapiens have to do something with her past life?â Ember paused, âMaybe.â
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crescent looked around. She was in the middle of what seemed to be an area that had just experienced a battle. There were multiple bodies of Grimm Sapiens at her feet...and blood coming from her abdomen. She realized she was also being held by the same woman she thought she had a history with. Crescent then felt tears run down her face, âAm I crying?â
The woman seemed to be crying too, as the Weapon Spirit could feel her tears drip onto her. Thatâs when she heard the woman say to her, âRwy'n dy garu di, Summer Rose.â She then kissed the Weapon Spirit on the lips, making Crescent realize that had a romantic connection to this woman. However, her mind was focused on what the woman called her. âSummer...Rose...? Is...that my true identity?â Crescent thought. Before she could question the scene further, everything went black.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The three women jumped when the red-clad Weapon Spirit took a sudden breath and began coughing. Ember and Gambol helped Crescent sit up as she tried to catch her breath. âWhat...happened?â She asked, through her fits of coughing. âWe were ambushed by Grimm Sapiens.â Arktis said. âThough you passed out at the very sight of them. Almost like you were in pain.â
âI was...having another flashbackâŠâ Crescent said. âI...think I have a guess on who I was...or AMâŠ.â The group went silent for a few moments before Arktis asked, âShould we tell your wielder?â Crescent shook her head, âNo. Iâm...not sure if sheâll be able to handle it calmly.â Ember nodded, âWell, you can tell Yang, if you feel comfortable. She and I have had a pretty good guess on your identity.â
Crescent nodded. She...honestly wasnât sure what name she should be called by now. Summer...no, SHE was Rubyâs mother. However, Ruby only knew her as Crescent Rose and the girl, as well as Yang, Taiyang, Qrow had been told that Summer died. The woman she had a relationship with SAW her dying. She didnât know if she should be called by her true identity...or by her Weapon Spirit name.
The four were distracted by the sound of footsteps coming from behind them. Before they could draw their weapons, the source of the footsteps made a soft whine. It was a grey wolf pupâŠa few of them, actually...which Crescent immediately fell head over heels for. âOh my god, theyâre fucking adorableâŠ!â Crescent whispered, smiling. The pups noticed Crescent's voice, almost as if it was recognizable and walked towards her.
As the pups went towards the red clad woman, Gambol stepped back as the baby wolves passed, almost being cautious around them. Crescent picked up one of the pups that now surrounded her with a laugh, âOh, you are the cutest thing ever.â Arktis and Ember took note of Crescentâs happier mood as she looked towards them. âDo you want to pet them?â The red clad Weapon Spirit asked.
âNo thanks.â The black clad woman replied. Ember looked at her, âAre you serious right now?â Gambol nodded, âTheyâre wolves. It doesnât matter if theyâre young or not, they are still canines.â While the two women were arguing over the age and possible danger of the pups, Arktis went over and accepted Crescentâs offer, petting one of the pups along its back.
âYouâre hesitant.â The taller woman said. Before the Schnee could respond in embarrassment, Crescent said. âItâs nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, itâs natural for people to be worried. Theyâre STILL a wild species, even though theyâre majestic.â Arktis nodded, albeit with a blush on her face as she attempted to pet the creature in the red clad womanâs arms.
âDid I...have a connection to wolves in my past life?â Crescent asked. âHard to say for sure.â Ember said. âFrom what I heard about...Summer from Taiyang and Qrow, she did have a deep connection with them...to the point of them considering her their alpha.â The other Weapon Spirits, excluding Crescent, looked at Ember in a mix of confusion and shock.
The red clad woman stood and put the wolf cubs down, so they could return to their pack. âOkay, shall we head back for a bit?â She asked, standing back up. The blonde nodded, âThat would be a good idea. Especially considering your current health.â The group nodded and cautiously left their currently location to meet up with their wielders. âQuick questionâŠâ The red clad Weapon Spirit started.
âShould we...tell the others?â She asked. âAbout me, I mean.â Ember shrugged, âThatâs up to you, really.â Crescent went silent for a few moments, before saying, âMaybe we should tell a select few for now.â Gambol and Ember raised their eyebrows, while Arktis nodded. âI agree. After all, I was in a similar situation that youâre in currently.â She said. After that, the group went off to meet up with their masters.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Later that evening...)
By the time evening came, most of the group were already asleep. Gambol and Blake were still awake, reading, while Ember, Arktis and Weiss had fallen asleep quite a bit ago. Ruby was also fast asleep, obviously tired from todayâs events. Crescent got up and put a hand on Yangâs shoulder, who was about to head to bed. âHey. Could we...talk real quick outside?â The red clad woman asked. The blonde teen nodded, âYeah, sure.â
The two went outside the dorm, before Yang asked, âOkay. Whatâs up?â The red clad woman bit her lip, before explaining, âSo, you know how I get my memories back little by little, right?â Yang nodded, allowing the Weapon Spirit to continue. âSo, today I was able to remember my name...I think.â The taller of the two said. The blonde teen nodded with a smile, âThatâs great! What is it?â
The Weapon Spirit stayed silent for a few moments, before saying, âPromise me that you wonât freak out.â Yang raised an eyebrow, but nodded anyway, âI promise.â The woman cleared her throat and finally said, âI...think I might be Summer RoseâŠâ Yang went dead silent and stared at the woman. Needless to say, she didnât see THAT coming at all.
Summer tightened her fists, waiting for the freak-out she knew was coming. Yang had every reason to freak out, to scream, to be frightened that someone who was DEAD was standing right in front of her, right? So it was quite a shock to her when Yang wrapped her arms around the woman and hugged her tightly. Even though Yang had her face buried in Summerâs shoulder, she could feel the teenâs tears.
âWe missed you.â The blonde said, earning a soft chuckle for the taller woman. âMissed you too, sunshine.â Summer said, smiling and kissing the blondeâs forehead. âI...know my next request might be strange, but could you not tell Ruby about this?â Yang pulled back and looked at Summer with a raised eyebrow, âWhy?â The former STRQ leader sighed, âI..donât think sheâll be able to handle that truth. Not yet, anyway.â âPlus, I would like to make sure I have all my memories before then.â The woman explained.
Yang nodded slowly. It was a strange request, but her step-mother did have a good point. âIâll try. What about Weiss and Blake?â Yang asked. âThey can know if you want them to. Gambol, Ember, and Arktis already know.â Summer explained. âArktis is Myrtenaster, in case you were wondering.â The teen nodded, âAlright. Iâll tell them when thereâs an appropriate time for it.â Summer smiled and ruffled Yangâs hair, âThatâs my sunshine.â Yang giggled and hugged Summer once more before the two went back inside for bed.
To be continuedâŠ
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOLY SHIT, THIS TOOK A WHILE! Summer semester was a fucking nightmare and I also had Rosebird Week to do. Chapter 2 is done. I apologize if the ending seems rushed. Iâm currently DYING to get to Raven and Summerâs eventual reunion in the Vol. 5 chapters! Anyway, Iâll see ya later.

RWBY Recaps: Volume 6Â âSo Thatâs How It Isâ
This is a re-posting from Nov. 17th, 2018 in an effort to get all my recaps fully on tumblr. Thanks!Â
Real talk: that episode was 100% not what I wanted to see and honestly not what I thought weâd be getting after the tone of âThe Lost Fable.â Yet here we are.
We start off with the gang having just finished Jinnâs vision, which surprised me a little bit. RT tends to delay gratificationâWant to know how people will react to this plot point? If that person survived? Gotta wait a while longer!âso I was expecting to begin with the villains, if not push this confrontation an entire episode. Yet we kick things off with a voice over from Yang, highlighting the exact part of the story we knew sheâd hyper-focus on:
Yang: âSalem canât be killed. You all heard her too right?â
And weâre immediately back to where we were emotionally in episode twoâwhich frankly drives me a little nuts. The entire purpose of getting glimpses of the team throughout the vision was to see their reactions to the events: Qrow lifting a hand towards Ozma, Ruby looking ill at Salem trying to kill herself, Blake and Weiss heartbroken over Salemâs grief, Yang horrified at what the gods were doing to them. On the one hand I agree that itâs incredibly realistic to have them lashing out like this. Put a bunch of teenagers through that much trauma, chuck a now fallible mentor at their feet, and theyâve got themselves a scapegoat they canât resist. On the other hand, Team RWBY + co. has been portrayed as staggeringly better than this in the past, so it rings as at least a little false to me that theyâd go this far. Not that they wouldnât be angry, but that out of the six of themâincluding Oscar nowâthereâs not a glimmer of empathy alongside the anger. I understand entirely that we ended on the worst note possible (more manipulation by Jinn), but that doesnât erase the fact that this is a) a large group of b) incredibly compassionate people who c) just spent 99% of that vision witnessing traumatizing events that werenât Ozpinâs fault and feeling for him then. Bypassing one moment of sympathy for him or even hesitation at cutting him further feels less like realistic teenage fury and more like the writers deciding to ignore a large chunk of their characterization for the sake of drama.
Because what they witnessed aside, this is still Ozpin. Heâs still the headmaster/friend they adored, still the man who taught them in Haven, still the huntsmen they fought beside in one of their worst battles to date. And here he is now after having his entire past ripped from him, back on his knees and crying. Thatâs an image that the protectors in them shouldnât be able to brush aside so easily, especially when each of them has been through a piece of Ozpin's existence. Weiss knows what itâs like to have people more powerful than you pulling the strings. Yang understands anger that drives you to choices youâll later regret. Blake has already fought against unimaginable odds (see: Oobleckâs lecture about how she wants to change the world but has no idea how to do it yet. Thatâs Ozpin). Ruby is familiar with being the eternal outsiderââI donât want to be the beeâs knees! I just want to be a normal girl, with normal kneesââand Qrow, as heâll mention in a moment, knows what itâs like to have nothing and no one. Ozpin was there for him then, but he wonât do the same for Ozpin now.
Let them have their anger, but let them act like themselves too.
Yang: âThere was so much you hadnât told us! How could you think that was okay?â
Yang in particular has a lot of displaced rage. She has since she was a kid and now Ozpin has become a very easy target to direct all that towards. Still, it doesnât change how mind-numbingly frustrating it is to see these kids twisting every piece of information that comes their way. How could he think that was okay? Ozpin already gave you his answer. He said straight out that he doesnât want to reveal all his secrets because the last two times he did that (Raven and Lionheart) he was betrayed and, presumably, thatâs happened numerous times before. Yang insists that he can tell them his secrets. Theyâll stand by him! But oh look, they wrenched the secrets from Ozpin forcibly and now they're not standing by him.
The girls are liars and hypocrites in this moment. Like I get it, they're also traumatized teenagers, but that doesn't change the fact that they're pulling the same shit Ozpin is currently getting all the flack for. Â
Iâve mentioned before that there are a hundred reasons why Jinnâs answer to that question is complete BS. Even ignoring our audience-knowledge of how jinns tend to operate, we have the in-canon fact that she canât answer anything about the future. Her answer regarding Salem's defeat is null and void in light of not knowing how the situation might changeâhow can she possibly say that Ozpin or another will never win? But even ignoring that too we have the additional fact that defeating Salem never was and never will be the true goal. Uniting humanity is. Keeping people safe from the grimm is. These are things everyone agreed to long before they even knew who Salem was. What? Did Team RWBY think they were going to wipe out the grimm in their lifetime? That theyâd drive creatures to extinction that, as far as they know, have existed since the dawn of time? No. They were just planning to make the world a better place for as long as they could. Theyâd already agreed to a fight against an âimpossibleâ to beat enemy. Fundamentally nothing has changed.
Yet Ozpin understands that suddenly learning that a Big Bad is immortal knocks a huge dent in everyoneâs hope. He knowsâlargely from experienceâthat laying out the situation with no context or nuance (as Jinn did) will make people give up. And we already see it happening, not just in their reaction towards Ozpin, but in casual lines like Blakeâs, âI just want to get this stupid relic to Atlas.â No doubt one of Ozpinâs greatest fears is that learning the truth will alienate people from fighting at all. It did for Raven. It did for Lionheart. And now itâs doing the same for the girls, with them acting like they just want to get the powerful relic out of their hands and then leave Ozpin to fight this war by himself. Though I donât actually think the girls will give up (that would be a very different kind of story), that line is not reassuring right now and just re-emphasizes that Ozpin was right to be wary.
We also see it in Qrowâs exchange with Ozpin:
Qrow: âNo one wanted me. I was cursed. I gave my life to you because you gave me a place in this world. I thought I was finally doing some good.â
Ozpin: âBut you areââ
Qrow: âMeeting you was the worst luck of my life.â
No one is letting Ozpin finish. Yang demands to know why he kept his secrets and then cuts him off before he gets out more than an âIââ. They let him admit that he doesnât have a plan, but no space to explain any context surrounding that statement. Here Ozpin tries to tell Qrow that he is doing good, he does have a place in this world, the existence of Salem does not suddenly negate everything else theyâve accomplished⊠but Qrow doesnât let him get that far. At this point theyâre not interested in listening to anything Ozpin has to say. This isnât a conversation anymore, itâs an emotional witch hunt.
So is it any surprise that Ozpin eventually nopes out of there? Qrow has just punched him and, far more damaging, delivered that gut-wrenching line about how heâs the worst thing that ever happened to him. Again, context always matters. Two friends fighting and saying cruel things to one another? Not great, but survivable. Ozpin and Qrow arenât just two friends though. Qrow is currently Ozpinâs only friend.
Letâs recap: His children are dead, his first host is dead, the original version of humanity that he knew? All dead. Who Ozma once was is gone, the gods he knew abandoned him, and the one remaining tie he has to his past is his genocidal ex-wife whoâs hell-bent on killing him. Every host Ozpin has had since then has passed away or merged with him in some horrific amalgamation. His friends at Beacon are either out of reach or donât know about his reincarnation trick and think heâs dead too. Raven sided with Salem over him. Lionheart, a friend for decades, sided with Salem over him. The children heâs traveling with are out for his blood, including the child heâs forced to share a body with. The one person he had left was Qrow⊠and Qrow just gave the biggest âfuck youâ possible. Keep in mind the abuse coding from last episode and fill in the blanks of a couple thousand years. Then Ozpin told Salem the truth and was murdered along with his children. Now the truth comes out and heâs chucked into a tree and screamed at. Ozpin has been conditioned to expect nothing but violence when he bares himself emotionally⊠and people keep proving him right. Heâs currently the lowest he's been in decades and thereâs no one here to help pick him back up.
âMaybe youâre right," he says. Maybe I am the worst thing thatâs ever happened to you all⊠so Iâll leave. As much as Iâm able to, anyway.
The real kicker though? Thatâs just met with more anger. âThat bastard!â Yang yells. âTell him weâre not done yet!â Ozpin quite literally canât do anything right in their eyes. Keep secrets to protect people? Youâre evil. Spill secrets? Youâre evil. Stick around to defend yourself? How dare you. Leave because youâre obviously not wanted? How dare you.
And you know what I just realized? At least one of the reasons why this arc feels so extreme to me? Because our characters are currently acting exactly like a large portion of the fanbase. For years RWBY viewers have demonized Ozpin and complained every time he came on screen, waiting for the day when the show would finally prove that heâs irredeemable trash. Except when that day came we actually learned that heâs a flawed, mortal man who was manipulated by a bunch of dick gods. Instead of acknowledging that hey, maybe we were wrong about his character, a huge portion of the fanbase has spent the last week grasping at straws in order to continue hating him. Ozpin has been sacrificing child soldiers to his war for millennia. (False). Ozpin has done nothing but lie to the cast since day one. (False). Ozpin raped Salem during his first reincarnation and was super abusive towards her. (False??)
Now we have this kind of mangled âjustificationâ made canonical. Fans and characters alike are currently determined to make Ozpin their antagonistâno matter what. Â
So Ozpin basically has a panic attack while still trying to give them what they supposedly want: a world where heâs not around to mess things up. Yet the girlsâ hypocrisy is revealed once more. They despise every decision Ozpin makes⊠but still want him calling all the shots.
Weiss: âHe just left us?â
Blake: âWhat are we going to do now?â
Newsflash, you canât have it both ways. Lucky for them (since no one is willing to take on the responsibility that Ozpin has been shouldering) Maria steps up and announces that they need to put off this conversation until theyâve found someplace safe. Because grimm. Which is what they should have done in the first place and would have if Yang hadnât thrown a temper tantrum. She starts yelling at Maria tooââLady, I donât know who you think you areââwhich just further demonstrates how Yang is willing to take her anger out on anyone and anything that crosses her path. Itâs not healthy. Itâs certainly not fair to those around her and I really hope someone addresses this soon.
Maria: âIâm still coming to terms with the fact that this is Humanityâs second time around!â
You tell âem! Poor Maria was thrown into the deep end of the pool with no life preserver and sheâs the only one managing to keep a level head. God bless this woman.
(Please donât be evil, oh please donât be evil.)
Maria: âIf we donât move we die and Iâll be damned if Iâve lived this long just to die out in the cold!â
And how long is that exactly? Long enough to have lived through the Great War? Inquiring minds want to knowâŠ
Ruby agrees thoughâbeginning to segue back into her role as compassionate leaderâand at her word everyone packs up the rest of their stuff and heads on out of that awful spot. Salt and burn the earth, girls. Leave it behind.
Except just when I think the emotional punches are through we get this horrible moment between Oscar and Qrow. Oscar tells Ruby, in an intimate moment of confidence, that heâs afraid heâs just going to be another life of Ozpinâs. Ruby immediately showed compassion again once Oscar switched back (reaching for him when he winced from the punch) and here sheâs her old self again, reassuring him that no, heâll always be his own person. That's the Ruby we love.
Then Qrow breezes by and denies it. âDonât lie to him,â he says. âWeâre better than that.â
Wow.
That was not okay. By any stretch of the imagination. Goddammit, Qrow, youâre the adult here and honestly I donât give a damn how much youâre hurting right now, that doesnât give you the right to take your anger out on an innocent kid. Oscar didnât ask for this and the idea that he exists only to be Ozpinâs host is just blatantly untrue. Youâre being cruel to him for crueltyâs sake which, Iâd like to point out, weâve yet to see Ozpin do. Despite all the trauma heâs suffered, heâs never taken his grief out on the children around him like that. Heâs also never claimed to be above lying as Qrow just did. With the point being only that this group is making a LOT of mistakes right now while refusing to allow Ozpin his own.
With that lovely piece of advice we turn to the villains⊠which frankly felt like some much needed breathing room after âThe Lost Fableâ and these last five minutes. The fact that the villainsâ plot-line is taking place in the past means that nothing revealed to them is news to the audience. Cinderâs alive? We knew that. Ozpin reincarnated? Obviously knew that too. The focus is instead on how they react to this information⊠and it turns out the answer is âPretty damn violently.â
Before that though we see Hazel, Emerald, and Mercury arriving back at Salemâs palace (the same one that she and Oz once lived in together). Iâve already come across jokes about how Hazel is now the dad of the group, and while obviously this is just meant as a silly acknowledgement of some really flimsy compassion we see from him, Emerald does look to Hazel when she gets off the ship, clearly seeking reassurance after Cinderâs (presumed) death.
Tyrian is waiting to greet them and heâs his usual, creepy selfâminus half a tail. Really though, he seems to have recovered quickly from Salemâs wrath last volume. He taunts Emerald about Cinder and when she threatens him he just cuts himself on her blade. Not gonna lie, I love Tyrian more and more as the series goes on. Heâs the wild card of the group and as such remains endlessly entertaining.
Mercury is supportive of Emerald, helping her calm down a bit in the face of Tyrianâs taunts, and really all of this is a nice contrast to what weâre getting with Team RWBY: the villains are supporting one another while our heroes tear each other down. Remember all those references to how Salemâs victory will be in dividing humanity? Yeeeaah.
Sheâs obviously displeased with the report. Hazel tries to take responsibility for the defeat and, uh, this happens:
Look familiar? Iâm getting very worried about what that intro shot of Qrow and the grimm arms is going to mean.
So Hazel is tortured for a while until Emerald admits that it was Cinderâs fault they lost. Itâs all some really horrible mind games on Salemâs part: ask for an answer and torture the guy who provides you with one, get Emerald to call out the one person she cares for, casually drop that this person still lives, intimidate Watts for questioning her. Tyrian is the wild card, yes, but we know now that his ramblings about his âQueenâ arenât so random after all. Salem is still playing the part of the God we saw in Jinnâs flashback and her followers treat her accordingly. They do as she says out of fear. Itâs what Salem lays out in the trailer: they can have their own desires, but only if they donât interfere with her own.
Hazel drops the bomb that, oh yeah, your ex also reincarnated already, which puts an interesting twist on Salemâs anger. Meaning, I wonder if sheâll be more forgiving of their failure now that she knows they were unexpectedly facing Ozpin in Haven. Regardless, sheâs not happy about the news.
At all.
We leave her letting one hell of a draft in and return to the gang. Yang bitches about how the path hasnât led anywhere and Maria asks if she really doesnât have anything âbetter to do than harass a defenseless old lady?â
More real talk: does Yang have experiences that explain her current attitude? Hell yes. Does all this make for compelling characterization? Absolutely. But right now I donât like her. Having a reason to be angry doesnât excuse the harm you do when you direct that anger towards those who donât deserve it. From her pointing her weapon at Qrow to harassing Maria, I donât think Yang is acting like a very good person right now and I haven't enjoyed her time on screen. An understandable development? Again, yes, but that doesnât change the fact that sheâs acting like a brat and encouraging everyone else to do the same.
Of course, as soon as she challenges Maria the path leads them to a farmhouse. Not that Yang is ready to apologize for her attitude (another big difference between Ozpinâs mistakes and othersâ: heâs constantly apologizing for his). Weiss notes that the place looks deserted, but at least itâs better than staying out in the cold.
âŠIs it though? That farmhouse looks creepy as hell and I donât trust it. To say nothing of the fact that weâve got that sewer place from the intro right next door.
And thatâs where we end up, the gang walking into this abandoned, potentially grimm-infested farm while theyâre all pissed at each other and the gate squeaks ominously closed behind them. Oh yeah. Iâm feeling real good about the next episode.
(Not.)
Other Details of Note
Iâm intrigued by the fact that Jinn seems to have dissipated immediately after finishing her story, both because personality-wise she seems like the kind to stick around and gloat, and also because theyâve still got one question left. We saw Awful Facial Hair Oz ask his questions back-to-back, so unless Jinn streamlined things for convenienceâs sake there doesnât seem to be a wait period between each question⊠I donât know. Narratively it makes sense (wanna clear Jinn out so thereâs no distraction from the Ozpin bashing), but in-world the rules governing these relics seem a little murky.
So Salem knows Cinder is alive. I wonder if thatâs connected to the grimm arm she gave her. If Salem has ties to Cinder that she hasnât bothered to explain yet. Hmm. Wonder if she can control Cinderâs arm like she does the other grimmâŠ
Salem also mentions the Sword of Destruction and intended to go after it before she heard that Ozpin had already reincarnated. Will that be the next relic on the list then?
With the exception of Ruby fighting the sewer grimm and everyone facing off against someone off screen, weâve hit on most of the imagery from the trailer and intro already. Iâll be interested to see what the rest of the volume holds since it looks like that vast majority of that material is being kept carefully under-wraps.
Still looking forward to reconciliation. Still putting a lot of stock in that one image from the intro lol

Done dirty: Jaune
Yeah, Iâm surprised too.
Let me get this out of the way: I donât like Jaune. I really canât stand him. I want the people reading this to know that beforehand to understand on the likely chance that I go on a tangent that make Jaune out to be the devil incarnate. It is merely an aspect of my own opinion that I have, and I have every right to dislike Jaune. Much like how Jaune fans have every right to like him as well. But this post is about how he has been done dirty. Not just by the fans, but by the narrative.
See, Jaune was supposed to be an audience surrogate. Which means he asks the important questions that the audience doesnât know, so that they can be informed. Unfortunately, the question that is asked is not a good one that was thought of.
âWhat is Aura?â
Aura is supposed to be an integral part of the world. Jaune stated that his ancestors were great heroes, but he is somehow not knowledgeable in this area. It would make far greater sense if he only knew the basics. Alternatively, there could be a class where the students learn how to use their aura in tactical applications. The concept could be explained there.
Not only that, but it also implies that having aura unlocked isnât a requirement for addmitence into Beacon. And since Beacon is a school where you learn how to fight monsters, and I presume criminals (given Pyrrhaâs comment about it in Volume 1), youâd think that aura unlocked would be a requirement.
Thatâs more of a tangent on Beacon as a school than it is about Jaune, so letâs move on.
Jaune cheated his way into the school. And this presents a problem in the sense that he for some reason expected that sleeping in class and not studying outside of class would make him a skilled hero?- He comes off as entitled because of how he worded it.
It really just feels like he thought that just attending Beacon would give him the skills he wanted. And then he sort of⊠bemoans that he isnât as good as the rest of his friends?- Yâknow, the ones who actually earned their right to attend the school?- Those friends.
Jaune put not only himself in danger with this stunt, but also his team!- He never attended any kind of combat school, nor did he partake in the entrance exam that Nora, Ren, Blake, Qrow, Raven, and likely a few others had to do to prove himself. He is risking his teamâs reputation and the lives of others with his lack of experience and training. For fuckâs sake!- CARDIN made it in on legitimate terms!
Contrary to popular belief, Jaune is not endangering only himself, he is endangering the rest of his team. His lack of ability and experience means that his team not only have to protect themselves (and civilians if the case calls for it), but also Jaune. Because again, he lacks the experience, training, and willingness to get better. The only âreasonâ he decides to accept Pyrrhaâs help later in the volume is because he got an ego boost (that Pyrrha helped him out with), and while yes, he did feel like a jerk for how he treated her earlier, it wasnât until he emasculated Cardin (again, with Pyrrhaâs anonymous help) that he finally decided that maybe just maybe, heâd need some training.
Volume 2 also pushed Jaune to the forefront. As Iâm sure a lot of people are aware, a common touchy topic in the good olâ rwde tag is that Jaune kept asking Weiss out numerous times. I can understand being sympathetic with Jaune the first time. Rejection is hard, but themâs the breaks. It was when he repeatedly asking her out (despite her saying ânoâ) that it got irritating. Not only that, but both the fans and Weiss VA, Kara believed that Weiss should âGive Jaune a Chance.â- Which, no. Absolutely not. I donât know in what world where âNoâ means âTry again laterâ but Iâm pretty sure that this isnât that world. The narrative seems more content in making Weiss be in the wrong for daring to have some autonomy and rejecting Jaune instead of⊠pointing out that Jaune was harassing her. And at the end of the prom arc, Jaune gets to dance with Pyrrha. He didnât really learn a lesson on respecting women after all that, he justâŠâŠâŠ got to dance with Pyrrha.
Also Jaune gets his first solo victory at the end of Volume 2!- He flails his sword around, and downs an ursa through sheer luck!
Volume 3 actually toned down Jaune quite a bit, so I wonât put much here. He acts like a human being, and suffers through some intense stuff. But we enter a hard spot here:
Pyrrhaâs death.
See, up until Volume 4 rolled around, Pyrrhaâs death was sort of like⊠Schrodingerâs Cat. She was both fridged only for Jauneâs development and at the same time, not fridged for only Jauneâs development.
There was a lot of speculation about what would happen. How would Ruby react to it?- How would Ren and Nora react to it?- How would Yang, Weiss, or Blake react to it?- How would everyone react to it?
The answer is: We donât get to see. Jaune is the only one who gets to react to Pyrrhaâs death. Jaune and only Jaune. Which presents a problem as he is taking away from otherâs development and reactions to Pyrrhaâs death. He not only calls the area that Ren saw his village get slaughtered in âcreepyâ
Jaune is right to be angry here. And while he is wrong for being angry solely at Qrow (He seems to have no issues with Ozpin in Volume 5), he is still right that they forced the choice upon Pyrrha. As a person of great power once said:
So yeah. Jaune has every right to be angry at Qrow, but earlier in the Volume, when RNJR was fighting Tyrian, Jaune looked away when Tyrian was about to attack Ruby.
This is the same guy who charged a Nevermore weaponless to try to save Pyrrha, right?- Jauneâs lack of consistency in this scene ultimately got him more hate from the rwde tag (And I will include myself in that, as I was guilty of it too), but again: where is the consistency?
I get that Jaune was outmatched there, but for him to go from âIâve gotta stop this grimm from hurting my friend! I may not have my weapons, but Iâll try my best!â to âI have my weapons, but whatâs the point in trying to take this guy on?- Heâll just beat me anyways.â is jarring. And this isnât even mentioning that he earlier said,
Way to say that in front of the girl who saw two of her friends die right in front of her and two orphans who saw an entire village get slaughtered in front of a grimm. How many of your family members did you lose again?
Look, Jaune came off as really insensitive in that scene, and it will be undoubtedly something that the rwde tag will rag on for years to come.
And in Volume 5, heâs sidleined again. A bit anyways. Jaune gets semblance training alongside Rubyâs silver eye hand-to-hand combat training while Ren and NoraâŠâŠâŠ donât need to at all. Look, if the reason behind Rubyâs hand-to-hand training is so that thereâs a way for her to survive if sheâs disarmed, then Ren needs a way to survive if he ever encounters a person who could match his speed or shrug off his attacks. And like I mentioned earlier, Jaune has no beef with Ozpin. Where was his rant about what they forced upon Pyrrha then?- Did Ozpin give the same spiel that Qrow gave too? Tangent aside, he does provide some interesting commentary, and has some unique dialogue with Weiss and Yang. As a Yang fan, and Jaune detractor, I do like the point where she refers to him as âvomit boy.â While it felt forced, it was a jab at Jaune, and given how sparsely those jabs are in the canon show are, Iâll take it.
And the Haven fight, oh boy! was I waiting for this.
Jaune starts it.
Now, I have no issues with Jaune starting the fight. Itâs a human emotion that he gets to have, and he is staring down the person who murdered his partner. The problem is that he isnât punished for it. Like I said plenty of times before, Yang had human emotions when she charged Adam, and she got punished for it. And then thereâs the fact that he takes on Cinder.
See, Jaune really doesnât have much narrative reason to take on Cinder. Had he been there for Pyrrhaâs death or had he accidentally gotten in the way and caused Pyrrhaâs death (like it was in the original notes), then Jauneâs rivalry would be justified. Unfortunately, the narrative never set up a Jaune vs. Cinder rivalry, and it hurts the story. Cinder was foiled by Ruby in the first episode, and the Volume 2 opening showed Cinder and Ruby fighting. Plus, thereâs the fact that CInder got two of Rubyâs friends killed right in front of her, as well as Cinderâs seething hatred for Ruby in Volumes 4 and 5. Jaune was never a factor in any of those, and he had no right to take on Cinder in a narrative sense.
And then after saying to the sociopath that he doesnât matter and that it is his friends that do, Weiss gets impaled. And we only really see Jaune reacting first. Where is Yangâs reaction?- I understand that Ruby was knocked out by that point, but couldnât have she also screamed out her name when she woke up?- Jaune is the only one to scream out her name.
(Thank God that he didnât say âI canât lose anyone elseâŠâ)
But can we talk about how this is becoming a trend?- Female characters being harmed or killed just so that Jaune can develop?- I highly doubt that Ruby, Yang, Ren, Nora, Qrow, or even Oscar are going to develop from this, and thereâs no reason that Cinder couldnât have targeted Ruby (for narrative reasons, as well as her own established grudge), Ren (who is stated to be a glass cannon, and has far less bad blood than with Jaune than Weiss), or Nora (who hasnât gotten much of a backstory yet, and would actually get the audience scared that she might die). Yeah, two of these characters I suggested are also female, but they have better reasons to get impaled than Weiss (who had to be massively nerfed just so that the fight with Vernal would be a total stomp).
The hardest part about all this are the people who constantly defend Jauneâs every action.
âHeâs just following his dreams of trying to become a hero!â
- By endangering people?- Why couldnât he ask his parents to enroll him in a combat school or something?
âHeâs a teenage boy. They tend to ask people out and not get the hint!â
- Thatâs an explanation. Not an excuse.
âHeâs honoring Pyrrhaâs memory by merging it with his stuff!â
- So I guess mama and papa Nikos donât matter then, huh?
Nobody is saying that Jaune isnât allowed to have emotions. But when the best defense you can muster is along the lines of âIs he supposed to just stand around, show no emotions, and do nothing like [insert relevant character here]?â- Then it just shows that they want only Jaune to act and react like a human, and not anyone else.
Iâm fairly certain that some of people who defended Jaune starting the fight also overlap with some of the people who berated Yang for wanting to save Blake.
Jaune has had a major arc in pretty much every volume except for Volume 3. Which is a bad sign when Ruby has only gotten one, and it barely lasted half as long as Jauneâs first character arc that he also got in Volume 1.
His initial isnât even in the title. He never once got a trailer. Thereâs no reason for him to be at the forefront of events and being the only one to react to the events that happen.
Itâs not necessarily that Jaune gets development, itâs more that other characters DONâT get to develop because that honor goes to Jaune. Jaune gets to act human, but he is never treated like a human. He is never called out for his actions, and he is always met with defenders in the FNDM despite other characters being met with belittlement for doing similar actions (need I bring up Yangâs belittlement for trying to save Blake again?).
Jauneâs lack of proper treatment and constant spotlight hogging is what makes him a poor character.

RE:RWBY Chapter 3 Review
http://archiveofourown.org/works/10099949/chapters/22790120
Students gathered in Beacon Academyâs large auditorium for an opening assembly. Ruby and Jaune managed to join to the crowd once they saw first-yeats flood towards the innards of the school.
Yeah, again this is a constant problem throughout the story as the author doesnât understand that you need to add a bit more than what is necessary to keep an audience excited. Detail is the name of the game as it helps the reader visualize and see what is going on. Even in the original scene, I could tell the audience was excited due to the chatter and slight movement which made me excited as well. Here it sounds like everyone is like a robot. awaiting their orders.
âO-oh, okay! ByeâŠ!â He sighed. âShe thinks she has it bad, I canât hold anyoneâs attention for more than ten minutes. I gotta listen to Dad moreâŠâ
Another problem: Jauneâs original line âNo where m I going to find another nice, quirky girlâ was both cute, understandable and human. This feels...awkward and artificial due to the change in Jauneâs speech pattern.
âYang Xaio-Long!â She announced as she walked up to her. âOh hey, howâs your first day going, sis?â She waved happily, completely unaware of the trouble she experienced in such a short amount of time.
Um, again, detail. Maybe add in: â up to her, ready to let out her frustrations and woes onto her elder sister.â Would have been more interesting.
âYouâre lucky we werenât blown off the side of the cliff!â Weiss warned. âOh my god, you really explodedâŠâ Yang did her best to contain laughter.
Yeah, in the original, Yangâs voice expressed surprise at Ruby being literal as well as Rubyâs compliants were being said just as we were seeing Weissâ angry face thus it was one joke after another. Just as well, the way the Yang line is structured is just bad considering it should go like this: âYang said, trying her best to contain her laughter.â
âIt was an accident! An accident!â Weiss held up a pamphlet in front of Rubyâs face entitled âDust for Dummiesâ and shoved it towards her hands. âThe Schnee Dust Companyâ she began, âis not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy to follow guide to Dust applications and practices in the field. Well-readiness in the field of Dust applications can lead to none or fewer legal issues with the Schnee Dust Company and its providers.â
Describe Rubyâs lines as crying out and then it becomes funny. Weiss shoving the pamphlet into Rubyâs hands may not seem like a bad thing but it was the punchline of Weissâ âread this and never talk to me againâ line. Now, the line will be said without a punchline or a joke.
And Weissâ talk is nowhere near as funny with it being speed up or seeing Ruby being overwhelmed. In fact, itâs not even funny just....there.
âI noticed your Dust cartridges,â Weiss said in reference to Rubyâs ammo belt. âEven if you do use an inferior and cheaper brand, thatâs no reason you canât familiarize yourself with proper safety protocol. For the sake of me and everyone at this school.â âU-um, itâs not really all that ch-cheap-â Ruby spluttered. Weiss ignored this. âYou really wanna start make things up to me, dolt? âAbsolutely?â âRead this, and don't ever speak to me again.â
yeah, the interjection of the two extra lines are completely superfluous and adds nothing. You could edit them out and it wouldnât lower the quality at all. In fact, the joke of Ruby being awkward is now overstaying itâs welcome and becoming pretty damn boring.
âLook, uh, it sounds like you two just got off on the wrong foot. Why don't you start over and try to be friends, okay?â She offered. Clearly this girl had no intention to let things go with her little sister.
One word can make all the difference, like adding âhopelesslyâ after âoffered.â Without that word, the lines here are kind of confusing as I donât know why Yang is doing something she knows sheâll fail at while âhopelesslyâ implies sheâs taking a chance.
âYeah!â Weiss exclaimed with sudden and obviously-not-forced enthusiasm. âAnd we can paint our nails and try on clothes and talk about cute boys, like tall, blond, and scraggly over there!â
Narration is suppose to be factual and informal, not sarcastic. That defeats the purpose of narration. Everyone knows that.
âWow, really?!â Ruby asked, far too optimistic for Weissâs sense of humor.
Weiss offered no response but dead silence and a very disgruntled glare.
Okay, what narration style is this? This all over the place third person narration is something that beginners have hammered out of them by the second chapter. I know this because I had this problem in my very first work and didnât repeat it.
Also, waiting for the punchline. You know, the frank âNoâ Weiss says that is the payoff to the build up of her sarcasim, Rubyâs hopefulness and her glare? ... Not happening? Then your joke falls flat. Also, Jauneâs âIâm a natural blondeâ was set up by Weiss mentioning him but thatâs also edited out so thatâs another build up wasted.
A man walked on stage and the room began to quiet down. Ruby squinted and saw none other than Professor Ozpin make his way to a microphone stand with Professor Goodwitch in tow. Ozpin seemed to stand with regal straightness despite reliance on a cane. For that matter, Ruby felt like his eyes lingered on her for just a moment despite his sweeping, aloof gaze. A very unsettling, ghostly presence. He quietly adjusted the microphone to his height, and gave a slight cough to draw the crowd.
Normally this would be praiseable given that itâs fine detail...but it shows the author is too lazy to do it for everything else which is what really needs it. Youw atsed detail on Ozpin when this detail should have gine to the Weiss and Ruby part or to Ozpinâs introduction.
âKind of a creepy guy, huh?â Yang asked, hardly respectful without the experience Ruby had. âHey, heâs just a little strange. I promise heâs got it together more in person.â âDidnât sound all there to me.â âMaybe heâs getting on in years,â interrupted Jaune Arc, who appeared between them. âYou know, my grandpa hasnât been able to tell me or my sisters apart since I was six.â
Creepy? I never got a creepy vibe from Ozpin. Your language from ebfore fits that but doesn't fit his character: Those description are better suited for Salem NOT Ozpin who is a mentor character and thus this unsettling vibe would conflict with that. And removing that and replacing it with creepy is both a downgrade and makes him superfluous.
Also, Jaune line here is...just dull and sad for people with Alzheimer disease. The blond line was much funnier.
Pyrrha Nikos commanded attention wherever she went. The young girl wished to keep things quiet on her first day at Beacon, but students who had heard of her fighting prowess and seen her face from magazine to cereal box refused to give her that peace. Weiss Schnee, the queen of entitlement, hardly attracted a crowd herself but made sure to make herself the forefront of Pyrrhaâs followers. âOh, Pyrrha, your gown looks simply divine!â Weiss kicked off a torrent of compliments, even though her night garb advertised nothing but modesty. Ironically the white-haired girl dressed richly and without shame of her wealth. Hundred-yard stares of awe and envy showered her every move. Everyone in the ballroom must have gawked to some extent; all except that scraggly blond boy who cluelessly wondered what made all the ruckus.
Okay, again, this clusterfuck of a narration style is giving me a headache as this gets hammered out of you mere days within writing. Itâs too specific for normal 3 person and two wide spread to eb character specific.
This praising Pyrrha thing only worked because Jaune was there to provide a direct foil and counterpart to Weiss at the moment, bring misery for Weiss who at the time was the perfect joke magnet due to her bitchy side being the only side we see so far. Now there's no misery except Pyrrha who is too kind and composed for it to be funny. Also Jaune not noticing Weiss is very OOC.
Speaking of: You showed you can do detail now mind explaining what Weiss is wearing? no? The why is it so attractive?
âI know I do!â She purred seductively through her teeth. Several shirtless guys had taken the opportunity to flaunt themselves before they turned in. âOh come on, after your sixteenth birthday, I donât think heâd want you having sleepovers anymore.â âAh yes, Lilac,â she reminisced. âReally made it a âsweetâ sixteen.â âGross,â Ruby shuddered. âIs it really that much more gross than the time I walked in on you polishing Crescent Rose ?â âItâs very different!â
because the joke about Ruby being sexual attracted to weapons didnât die out after Volume 1 ended...there years ago!
Also, rubyâs grossed out by Yang mentioning sex but had a sexual depiction of Blake?...Not only is this inconsistent with this version of Ruby, itâs OOC as Ruby would probably have a joke like that swing over her head! God, you know a joke is unsalvageable when Taiyang is mentioned and Iâm not smiling like a goofball.
PS: Jaune was suppose to wlak in here and make Yang roll her eyes which is funny because Jaune was in a onesie which has lead to many a funny fanart. Here we have...a sex joke and a joke that went stale two years ago. See why jaune is important?
âWhatcha writing?â Yang asked, head tilted towards the scroll. âJust a letter to the gang back home. I promised to tell them all about Beacon and how things are going.â
Okay, the incosnistancies in the authorâs writing style is pissing me off. itâs too robotic to be casual and too casual to be informal! Itâs really ruining my experience.
Next: Ruby was writing a letter in the original script which kind of reinforced her being simpler than the others, hence âa simple soul.â Typing doesnât work the same.
âThe girl looked over her book to see Ruby unsuccessfully struggle against Yang as she leads her sister over to spot below a vast ballroom window. âHel-looooo! â Yang sang, âI believe you two may know each other?âRuby, right.â She put her book in her lap and leaned back. âYou exploded earlier and got that Schnee pissed off.â
Yet another example of animation failing to translate to written form. In the original we had Ruby visibly AND audibly fighting against Yang while Yangâs line was delivered in a cheerful and funny way. This lacks that charm and makes it just dull.
âRuby, right.â She put her book in her lap and leaned back. âYou exploded earlier and got that Schnee pissed off.â âUh, umâŠyes?â âMade for a pretty good first day,â she said with a smirk. âSee? She likes you,â Yang whispered as she nudged Ruby. âKeep it up!â âI donât know what to say!â She hissed back, glad that she had the girlâs approval but completely lost on what conversation to make.
See here, this just feels artificial because Blake was so factual and netural about the incident in the last chapter that we would think Blake wouldnât say something like that whereas the original just had Blake mention she exploded and Ruby tried to shake her hand she sniffed Ruby, reinforcing her awkward personality naturally instead of this unnatural crap.
âBlake,â she sighed. She had just began to pick up her book when Yang asked. âWell, Blake, I'm Yang, Ruby's older sister! I like your bow! âThanks,â Blake said, a little irritated now. âIt goes great with your, yaâknow, pajamas!â âMm..?â Blake tilted her head, impatient for them to either get on with the conversation or leave her be. Yang thought she even saw the bow twitch with annoyance. Ruby laughed uncomfortably as Yang continued to throw out topics.
Okay, this is where the narration style crashes and burns as I cannot tell what is going with it. Is Yang making the observations, is Blake , is the author? Itâs mixing in all these things that do not work together!
Also, Blake was perfectly fine before with Ruby whereas in the original she was being factual and showed annoyance earlier on, displaying she didnât want to talk naturally. Now it feels like Blake is annoyed because âplot!â
âWell, that's why we're here. To make it better.â âOh, I am so proud of my baby sister!â Yang coddled. She smothered Ruby with a tight hug, which she valiantly fought and lost against. âCut it out!â Ruby kicked at Yangâs legs to knock her down and they ended up in a pile on the floor. Somehow Yangâs hug turned into a headlock and soon enough sleeping bags were tossed tangled beneath them and pillows flew across the room. Blake sunk into her place against the wall further as eyes turned on the arguing sisters.
If they were being that rambunctious in the original, Glynda would storm in and scold them or at the least someone besides Weiss would come up and tell them to stop.
âWhat in the world is going on over here?!â No one but Weiss Schnee stormed in on the scene. âDon't you realize some of us are trying to sleep-â Yang and Weiss locked eyes, fed up with each others presence. âOh, not you again!â They both shouted in exasperation. âShh! Guys, she's right! People are trying to sleep!â âOh, now you're on my side!â âI was always on your side!â âYeah, what's your problem with my sister? She's only trying to be nice!â âShe's a hazard to my health!â
Do I even need to point out how the original surpasses this due to voice acting and Blakeâs expression?
Blake sighed and closed her book for good. She had been ripped from her peaceful night but couldnât say the bickering didnât entertain her some, especially with Weiss angry at an innocent Ruby. Something about the way that girl got worked up gave her a deep satisfaction, but that she would keep to herself.
Why would Blake not know why making Weiss upset satisfy her? Sheâs a Schnee and from her view Weiss is a spoiled privileged brat that caused her kind Fanaus and her comrades the White Fang trouble for years?
... Blakeâs not a member of the White Fang in this is she?... Itâd say how dumb that is and how by removing that Blake should be a completely different person but Iâve got house work to do.
Final thoughts: The writing is boring and uniteresting, lacking detail and comedic timing to be engaging or funny. The changes just make the story worse and the narration pisses me off.
