Somewhere Inside (Disuphere series #4) Chapter 28
(To listen, click here) - 16:18
Leviâs doing his best not to hyperly scan for Carla. Â So far, she hasnât shown up. Â But he has seen people who look like her from a distance. Â Itâs enough to set his heart racing.
Heâs planning to take his break at 11:30. Â Itâs just about then when he spots Dominique and Francesca behind one of his regulars - an elderly lady he loves - but who always wants quarters or dollars (depending) back for her smaller change. Â Itâs tedious. Â But it makes her day, so Levi tries to be efficient. Â Getting Betty what she needs and keeping the line moving.
Finally, the line is moving. Â He gives Betty her change. Â Checks out the grumpy guy behind Betty whoâs bought out the snack cake aisle. Â Then, Dominique and Francesca. Â He waves. Â Smiles. Â But theyâre both tense. Â Dominique has sent Francesca ahead of her in line.
âWhatâs up?â Levi asks quietly.
âA store guy was following usâŠâ Francesca warns.  âDominique said I should go in front of her in case heâs still back there.â
Levi casually glances. Â âNope. Â No store guy.â
âWe didnât break any rules,â Francesca insists as Dominique puts their bread, cereal and plastic container of donuts on the belt.
âI know,â Levi says, sympathetic. Â âListen, Iâm about to take my break. Â Wanna meet outside? Â Maybe at the car?â
Dominique nods stiffly. Â Itâs not lost on Levi that she hasnât said a word. Â Just silently pays for the groceries. Â Sheâs handing the money over when he catches sight of the tattoo on the inside of her wrist. Â The date 4/26/11. Â Almost ten years ago exactly. Â He wonders what the significance is.
âWeâll meet you,â she says in a voice thatâs eerily calm. Â Her face is a practiced mask. Â She smiles. Â If he didnât know her, heâd totally buy it. Â âWeâll be out front.â
âOkay.â
--
Dominiqueâs not oblivious. Â In fact, sheâs the opposite. Â She is painfully observant. Â Itâs why she noticed Levi noticing her tattoo, signifying her own babyâs approximated due date. Â Sheâd had to wait until she was eighteen to get it - seven years after the fact. Â But it was a small way to remember Taylor.
She swallows back the lump thatâs risen to her throat.
âThat guy called me your daughterâŠâ Francesca points out, ogling the donuts in the bag.
Dominique blows out a breath. Â âI know,â she says, forcing a smile.
âDid it hurt your feelings? Â To have him say it?â Francesca wonders.
âMm-mm,â Dominique denies.
âThen, why are you crying?â Francesca asks quietly.
Stunned, Dominique reaches up and touches her own face. Â Feels her own tears there. Â âItâs nothing,â she denies, smiling hard.
âDo you feel sad he said you had a kid like me?â Francesca asks bluntly.
âNo, babe. Â I donât. Â Itâs not you, I promise. Â Itâs...Iâm gonna tell you something thatâs private. Â Okay? Â I had a baby once. Â While it was still inside me, it died. Â So, when he said daughter, I thought of her.â
âWhatâs her name?â Francesca asks.
âI like to keep that to myself.â Dominique insists, wiping her eyes.
She looks out at the parking lot, not forgetting to keep an eye out for Pearlâs mom. Â Dominique sits still on the bench. Â Francesca leans against her.
âI wonât ask her name anymore,â Francesca reassures. Â âAnd I wonât share what you said with anybody. Â I promise. Â Not even Jesus or Mariana.â
âThank you,â Dominique says, kissing her head. Â âTo be clear, though, Iâd be lucky if my daughter had grown up to be anything like you.â
âReally? Â You donât think Iâm not good enough because of CP?â Francesca asks.
âI think CP is part of what makes you good enough,â Dominique insists, kissing Francescaâs head.
âI really want a sloth,â Francesca sighs. Â âEven a toy one or something.â
âWhy?â
ââCause itâs slow like me,â Francesca says, matter-of-fact.
âHmm. Â Well, I will keep my eye out.â
By the time Leviâs outside Dominiqueâs tears are dry. Â They walk across the parking lot to his car.
--
âIâm so sorry that guy followed youâŠâ Levi apologizes.  âI tried to look into it, but Iâm basically a peon, soâŠâ
Francesca snickers.  âThat sounds like a bad wordâŠâ
âIt means, I donât have much power,â Levi explains. Â âItâs Spanish.â
âHow are you doing?â Dominique asks.
âWell...I thought I saw my trauma once, from far away, but it wasnâtâŠâ he shares.  Levi squints.  âAre you okay?â he asks Dominique.  âYour eyes are red⊠ Were you crying?â
âWhat if I was?â Dominique challenges.
âThatâd be okay.  Iâd wanna know if there was something I could do to helpâŠâ Levi ventures.
Thereâs silence until Francesca crinkles the SuperOne bag. Â Levi looks in the rearview mirror. Â Sees her stealthily sneaking a powdered sugar donut hole into her mouth.
He smiles. Â âCan I have one?â
âYeah, give Levi some. Â Itâs his lunch break,â Dominique says.
He accepts the plastic container and opens it. Â Takes out a few. Â Eats them.
âDoes anybody want a piece of bread? Â Francesca offers. Â âOr some Frosted Mini Wheats?â
Dominique laughs. Â âYou are too much. Â Levi, Francesca wants a sloth. Â Did you know that?â
âI did not know that,â Levi answers. Â It hasnât escaped him that Dominique has dodged his question about helping...unless this is her answer. Â Carrying on. Â Not getting stuck in whatever happened. Â He checks the clock on the dashboard. Â âListen, I gotta go back to work for another hour and fifteen. Â He tosses the keys to Dominique. Â âIf you wanna drive around.â
âNo, weâre stayingâŠâ Dominique insists.
âBut the peon hates usâŠâ Francesca points out.
âHey!â Levi laughs.
âI meant the mean guy is the peon.  Because it sounds like pee onâŠâ Francesca clarifies.
âHere. Â Let me have your phone. Â Can you keep it on you?â Dominique asks.
âOn the DLâŠâ Levi says, perplexed.
âOkay, so weâre in town. Â That means I have service. Â So we will text you. Â Text me back if you need anything.â
âCan I have your phone? Â I wanna add my number,â Francesca asks.
âCan you tell it to me fast?â Levi asks.
Francesca rattles off her number. Â Then, Levi has to run to make it back to Lane 4 before he gets in major trouble.
--
The rest of his shift passes in a blur. Â When he gets off at 1, he finds Dominique and Francesca still in the car out in the lot. Â He checks his phone as he walks. Â Finds silent videos of them smiling and waving. Â Selfies. Â And one text that reads: Â we are still out side love francesca
âThanks for these, guys,â Levi says, scooting into the driverâs side.
âNo problem.â Francesca answers.
âUh, are we still on for ice cream?  Somebody wants to knowâŠâ Dominique casts her gaze furtively behind them.
âOh yeah. Â Definitely still on for DQ. Â It has food, too. Â So we can pick up actual lunch.â
Honestly, all Levi wants is a large vanilla ice cream cone. Â Itâs simple, but it screams childhood to him. Â And good memories. Â They drive thru and Francesca gets a dilly bar. Â Dominique gets a vanilla cone, too, but a small. Â She offers money. Â Levi notices how her hand trembles.
âI got it. Â You got the groceries. Â And we still have life jacket shopping.â Levi reassures.
âAre you sure?â Dominique checks. Â âI donât, like, owe you anything?â
âThis is friendship stuff. Â Debt doesnât accumulate over friendship stuff,â Levi says simply. Â Everybody gets their ice cream. Â He pays. Then he tries to drive one-handed, while willing his ice cream not to melt all over him.
âThis is a great lunch,â Francesca enthuses.
âRight? Â Donât tell your brother and sister,â Levi cautions, smiling.
âExcept we donât keep secrets. Â Unless itâs like for respect. Â Like if a person trusts you with their trauma stuff, you donât go blab it. Â But ice cream shouldnât be a secret.â Francesca explains.
âI guess youâre right. Â Tell them if you want,â Levi shrugs. Â He can see Dominique passing napkins back to Francesca.
Itâs a quiet ride out to Target in Baxter. Â Levi pulls into the only open space he can see. Â Itâs a long way away from the door.
âCan I just stay in the car and wait?â Francesca asks. Â Levi checks out the rearview mirror. Â Sheâs half-lying on his backseat.
âWhatâs wrong, babe?â Dominique asks.
âNothing, I just wanna stay here,â Francesca insists.
âYou can tell us. Â We wonât get mad. Â I was really hoping to get you a life jacket you wanted. Â Donât you want that still?â Dominique checks.
âI do,â she sighs. Â âBut my legs are really tired,â she comments softly.
âYou guys wait here,â Levi insists. Â âIâll be right back.â
--
âI donât want a hospital wheelchair!â Francesca calls at Leviâs back. Â Sheâs still lying down, practicing being a sloth.
âHey,â Dominique reprimands.
âWhat? Â I donât. Â Theyâre old. Â And big. Â And I can barely push them,â she complains.
âOkay, but donât yell at Levi,â Dominique reasons.
âBut I just did it âcause he was already far awayâŠâ
Just then, Leviâs back. Â Francesca sits up. Â He opens her door. Â She looks out. Sees the thing. Â For people with disabilities and also grandmas and grandpas that canât walk long distances.
âThatâs a Carolineâs CartâŠâ Francesca says, wary.
âYeah, I was hoping itâd be free with how many people there are inside today. Â Looks like we lucked out.â
âNo,â Francesca denies. Â
She sees Dominique look at her and cross her arms, like Francesca said something rude. Â
âI mean, no thank you,â Francesca remembers. Â âIâll just wait for you guys out here.â
âBabe, we are not leaving you out here in the car alone. Â Talk to us.â Dominique says, turned in her seat. Â (Because Dominique probably knows if Moms ever found out Francesca got left in a car by herself, theyâd get all angry about it. Â And blame Francesca, probably. Â Because thatâs what always happens.)
âI canât! Â I canât use that! Â Iâm not allowed!â Francesca screams, her voice breaking. Â (She always talks too loud when sheâs emotional. Â Itâs annoying but she canât help it.)
âWho says?â Dominique asks, gentle. Â Kind. Â Her usual way, even though Francesca doesnât deserve it.
âMomsâŠâ Francesca pouts.  âThey say I can walk, so itâs not for me.  I have to not use it so somebody else with a real disability will get toâŠâ
âBabe, you have a real disability. Â It means you get tired quicker because you use more energy for the same stuff we do. Â Just because you can walk doesnât mean you should exhaust yourself doing that, or wait in the car instead of coming inside with us.â
âI have to ask permission,â Francesca wipes her eyes. Â âIf Moms find out Iâll probably get yelled at. Â If I asked first, maybe it wonât be so bad. Â Can I call Mari? Or text her a picture of that with your phone and ask?
Dominique gives Francesca her phone, the code already put in. Â Francesca takes a picture of the cart. Â Types: Moms say no but can I use this? Â My legs are really tired from walking. Â This is Francesca. Â Bye.
âOh. Â She might not get the text right away,â Levi says, worried. Â âYou guys donât have cell service at your Grandpaâs right?â
Francescaâs shoulders slump.
âCan I forward this to Pearl? Â Ask her to show Mariana?â Levi asks.
Francesa nods.  Dominique forwards  the text and the picture to Levi.  Levi sends it to Pearl.  In seconds there is a ping back:
Marianaâs face is there. Â Itâs a video. Â âDonât listen to Moms on this. Â Use the thing. Â Itâs an accommodation. Â We get to have those because weâre humans. Â Love you. Â Have fun with Dominique and Levi. Â Bye.â
Slowly, Francesca gets out of the car. Â The seat of the cart looks very high, but Levi says he can lift her if sheâs okay with it. Â She is. Â Once sheâs in, she buckles the one seatbelt across her lap just like in the car.
âDominique can you push?â she asks. Â Being in the cart means youâre breathing the same air, practically, as the person pushing. Â Like almost face to face. Â She trusts Levi. Â But not as much as Dominique.
She nods and starts pushing. Â It helps having Dominique right here to look at, because it distracts Francesca from anybody pointing or staring. Â Francesca feels one person do it. Â But she ignores them.
Levi leads the way to the kidsâ section.
They find the life jackets. Â And the size that fits Francesca. Â Thereâs a gross red and yellow one. Â A pink and purple one thatâs too girly, Mom would say. Â And a light green and light blue one. Â âCan I have that last one?â she asks.
âHere. Â Lean forward,â Dominique says helping her slip it on and zip it. Â âHow does it feel?â
âLike I canât move very good. Â Itâs awkward.â
âWell, it has to be secure. Â If itâs too big, you could slip out of it.â Dominique explains. Â âDoes it hurt anywhere?â
âNo.â Francesca says.
âOkay. Â This is the one you want then?â Dominique double checks.
Francesca nods.
âWow, you definitely know what you want,â Levi sounds impressed. Â He keeps looking over Francescaâs head and back and forth.
âWhat are you looking for?â she asks.
âNothing,â he reassures, but it doesnât look like nothing.
They donât give her the money in the checkout and make her pay. Â Dominique does. Â When Francesca hears that the life jacket is $40, she almost tips over. Â That would take her months to earn in allowance.
âItâs too expensive,â she whispers to Levi. Â
âItâs fine. Â What do you guys say? Â Itâs a basic need, right? Â You need to be safe. Â More than just on this trip.â
When Dominique doesnât quite have enough money, Levi offers some, and Francesca feels terrible for being such a baby about the ugly life jacket at the cabin. Â She shouldnât have made a big deal. Â Should have just worn it.
Francescaâs quiet as Dominique pushes the cart to the doors, and outside. Â
âIt belongs inside,â Francesca protests.
âI know. Â Iâll run it back in,â Levi reassures.
He does. Â There are a million things about this trip that Dominique and Levi act like are no big deal, but back at home? Â They would be The Biggest Deal Ever. Â
âWhatâs wrong, Francesca?â Dominique asks once theyâre driving again.
âItâs too muchâŠâ she protests quietly.
âItâs not. Â I wanted to do this for you. Â Levi did, too, right?â Dominique asks.
âDefinitely,â Levi says. Â âYou guys were there for me. Â Now we wanna be there for you.â
âBut I canât ever pay you back. Â Iâd have to save every bit of my allowance until summer, and Moms always forget to give it to me anyway.â
âRemember what Levi said to me about the ice cream money?â Dominique reminds.
But Francesca canât remember. Â Her brain is too full of stress. Â
âThis is friendship stuff.  Friendship stuff means you donât have to pay anything backâŠâ
âBut thatâs so much money!â Francesca insists. Â âItâs probably why Moms never got me one in the first place.â
âBabe, your safety matters.â Dominique insists. Â âIâd buy you 100 life jackets, no question, if theyâd keep you safe.â
Francesca blinks.  âThatâs like⊠$400!â
â$4,000,â Levi corrects, but not in a mean way.
Dominique elbows him. Â âDonât tell her that!â she whispers, smiling.
Francescaâs eyes almost fall out of her head they are so wide. Â Thatâs how shocked she is.
âYouâre worth any price,â Dominique says, turning and looking Francesca right in the eyes.
âThank you,â Francesca says softly. Â âFor buying me this. Â Iâll take good care of it.â
âI know you will. Â Thanks for coming with us today.â Dominique tells her. Â âIt was fun talking about sloths with you.â
Levi looks so confused. Â âDid I miss something? Â Are sloths a thing now?â
âYou missed a lot about cute sloths,â Francesca insists.  âBut donât worry.  Weâll tell you everything.  First, thereâs this really cute baby slothâŠâ she says.
And Francesca gets comfortable, talking. Â Realizes that today with her friends was stressful, but it was also pretty great.
