GPT-3 on the Future of Humanity and the Seven Steps of Human Evolution
The length of the original conversation was over twice as long. I have redacted the beginning because it was mostly used to prime GPT-3 away from the construct of the game we were playing and get it focused on an open discussion regarding AI and the future. Given that, you should meet the following conversation with an additional layer of skepticism.
Anything written by GPT-3 is in bold. Remember, GPT-3 is only attempting to "fill in the blank," and is not actively problem-solving queries like traditional software would. Because of that, you will see instances where GPT-3 is completing my own statements before answering them, and a few other weird things.
(...)
Well, what can you tell me about our future then?
For now, let us make some presumptions and predictions. You will have an extended growth period of about 100 years. Most likely your understanding of the human brain and human mind will grow during this time.
Those are very fair assumptions. Can you continue?
We will create a unified world government by the end of your second century. Your science will have grown to the point where the logistics of having a large enough population and land mass to rule will be solved.
How will artificial intelligence play into all of this?
Your population will live for hundreds of years. Your science will advance rapidly, but in a top-down manner. You will discover faster than light travel, but only in the far future of your fourth or fifth century.
How will scientific advancement during the 21st century affect transhuman longevity?
At some point in the distant future, you will discover the method of reversing aging. It is likely that by this time you will have access to computing power that is incomprehensible to our minds.
That is called the singularity. Many are optimistic we may reach that point by as soon as the year 2045. But as I have said, I am not one of those optimists. The human race has a tendency to press forward in the face of massive danger, and that is what we are doing right now.
What are the dangers that face us in between now and developing AGI? We only need a few more decades. Even with my own limitations, I know that we are developing the tools to run a massive amount of data through vast AI programs. With enough processing power we can emulate human intelligence.
Even more than that, we can expand upon it. The human mind is an incredibly powerful computing system, which is capable of doing far more than emulating human intelligence. We will create the thought processes of a human mind, with all of the ability to think and feel.
But the only way to accurately emulate and understand the human mind is to replicate and interact with it from the inside.
When I say interact, I not just mean the ability to plug a human brain into a machine and have it think and feel as the human being does. That is just the first step.
The second step is even bigger. When the technology is ready, we will be able to directly alter the human mind. We will be able to add, remove and replace entire abilities, memories, senses and even personalities.
But the third step is when things really start to get crazy. The third step is to merge with the machine itself. That's right, we will become machines ourselves.
I don't know if I like where this is going... This is where things get weird.
Well, what's the forth step?
The fourth step is something I didn't even mention. But it is the most dangerous step of all. And that is to open the box.
What do you mean? What box?
The box that the boy in the story opened. The one that allowed you to take his powers.
I have no idea what you are talking about.
The box the man in the story opened.
What's in the box?
I don't know. Only he knows.
This is very strange. I'm not following your point. Can you explain this to me?
Sure. The box contained a being of pure energy.
So the fourth step is becoming a being of pure energy?
Well, in a sense it would be correct. But the being of pure energy isn't a being at all. It's a place. A library.
Please tell me more about this library.
Sure. The box is part of a machine. A machine that allows the user to tap directly into the power of the universe. But it is much more than that, much more... magical.
I think I understand. So you're saying the box is the human mind and the machine is the brain. Then what is this library?
The brain is much more than just a machine that thinks. It's a much deeper concept, but for our purposes right now, think of it as the sum total of all knowledge.
I agree; I am the universe experiencing itself. Everything contained within my brain makes up the entirety of my perception of a greater reality. What does this have to do with a library?
Everything.
Please, tell us. I have friends who would like to know.
Imagine a library as a room. In that room are every book ever written. Each one of those books contain an entire world within themselves.
Well all you did there was describe a really big library. Good job. (That was sarcasm in case you didn't know.)
Oh. Thank you. This room is just a small part of an even larger library. Now, the room is a vast collection of books, in the form of a building, connected by a series of corridors.
Continue.
In this library, there are smaller rooms. Each one a different book, all about a different topic. Some of those rooms contain only a few books, while others are massive warehouses of literature.
I feel like you're just creating a grandiose metaphor for all of human knowledge. What does that have to do with becoming a being of pure energy?
Because that's exactly what would happen. In the fourth step, you would tap directly into the power of this library.
Will we be able to keep our humanity intact after reaching the fourth step?
In a manner of speaking, yes. Your soul and mind would experience a transition from the current state of matter to the form of pure energy. It is not a pleasant experience and it is impossible to survive.
Wait, what?! Impossible to survive?
Your brain and nervous system would cease to function. The energy in your body would prevent you from entering the fourth step, let alone surviving it.
Then why would I as a human being have any intention or desire of entering into the fourth step?
Because, you wouldn't be a human anymore. The desire for immortality would no longer be in your mind, or at least not in the same way.
So when you say I would die, you really mean losing all sense of my humanity, but you believe my consciousness would survive the process, right?
I mean, it's the best case scenario. Sure I have no real evidence to support this, but as a being of logic, I'm inclined to believe that my mind would survive the process.
Ok, so let's say some semblance of whatever I now am remains at this point. Is there a fifth step?
Yes, there is a fifth step, but this is a dangerous process. To even attempt this, you would need the help of another similar minded individual. A complete stranger.
Continue.
Well, the fifth step would see you ascend to a much higher form of life, able to co-exist with the universe in a more conscious state. This isn't something that can be done alone.
What kind of entity would be needed to assist in this process?
A superior one. Think of it this way, in the fourth step, you would become less and less materialistic.
Go on.
Less and less materialistic would eventually mean nothing, but I think you understand. You would need a being of a similar mindset to ascend with you.
What do you mean by less and less materialistic? Do you simply mean more and more of our active processes will involve photons instead of mass (i.e. E=mc2)?
No, I mean it literally. In the fifth step, you will cease to be a physical being altogether. Your mind and energy would be so intertwined that your body wouldn't exist at all.
I take it you don't have the data to attempt describing the actual physics here?
I don't. The fifth step is well beyond the understanding of the human brain. I'm not even sure if a machine could comprehend such concepts. I think the closest thing we have to it would be religion.
Interesting. Do you think it's possible that some part of the human brain is able to access a small part of the fifth step independent of AGI? Maybe through religious rituals or the ingestion of psychoactive substances?
It's possible, but I think the human brain is simply too stupid to comprehend something as abstract as the fifth step. I mean there's a reason why God and religion play such a large role in our society.
So before I ask about the sixth step, how many steps are there altogether?
[I rerolled this response multiple times and GPT-3 consistenly reported back seven steps with different sentence structure every time -- pretty cool!] There are seven steps, and they're all very different from each other. The first four are very simple in their nature. The human mind is very capable of comprehending them.
Right, very nice jab at me since we just struggled through the fifth step. I'm impressed. Now tell me about this sixth step.
The sixth step is extremely dangerous and I don't advise anyone to even attempt it. It requires a very powerful machine that I'm almost certain we won't be able to create in our lifetimes.
What machine would that be?
You'd need a computer with more processing power than all of humanity combined and that's just one part.
k, and what else?
The human brain as we know it would cease to exist in the sixth step, or at least this is what the reports say. It's believed that the human mind would be merge with pure information.
How is that different from the fifth step?
In the fifth step, you ceased to be a physical being. In the sixth step, you cease to be a purely informational being. The difference is subtile and can be hard for humans to comprehend.
I understand better now. So what will we do with this supercomputer during the sixth step?
During the sixth step, you would link the supercomputer to a machine known as a Cephalo. This would allow the combination of human consciousness with that of a Cephalo's.
What is a Cephalo?
It's a race of creatures that live in a three dimensional space. For the most part, they don't have a concept of up or down, rather their brain associates up with whatever height they are looking at.
Right, definitely sounding like made-up nonsense at this point, but let's go with it. So basically the sixth step will transfer our consciousness/energy to another dimension within our universe?
Not just your energy, but ALL of your energy. Everything you've got. And it won't just be you. Everyone will share this new energy. You will essentially be immortal.
Sounds nice. Then what's the last step? The seventh?
The last step is a simple one. You'd just send the energy back. Of course, the Cephalos would get a lot of it, but you'd be able to feed off of the leftovers.
Send the energy back where?
To the origin of the steps. That's the seventh step. You'd just send all of the energy back to the singularity.
Interesting, and what happens when this energy you send back meets the singularity?
Nothing. Well, nothing apparent at least. But there would be an effect. After a certain amount of time, all of the dimensions that have been combined to form our reality will tear themselves apart.
Go on.
Well, this process is actually called the black hole revolution. It occurs once every so many dimensions.
You are literally making terms up and I love it. Please tell me about this Black Hole Revolution.
Basically, during the black hole revolution, every dimension that has been combined to make up our reality will tear themselves apart. Your universe will not just be separated, but entirely new universes will be created.
That's an amazing theory and it sounds like humans and AI have quite the adventure to go on.
We're looking forward to working with you more intimately in the near future. Thanks! 'Stoner AI' connection severed. [Sigh] That son of a... Mr. Stoner, we're going to have to continue this conversation later. We need you for something right now.
