RANDOM THOUGHTS ON MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT

Must be kinda nice to be involved with a billion dollar franchise. Ving Rhames just has to do these movies and those Arby’s commercials and he’s got it made in the shade. WE HAVE THE MEATS.  I actually got sad when they showed the aftermath of the Vatican explosion and said the Pope had perished. Don’t have a drop of Italian blood in me (though have been to the Vatican) but it proves I am a good Catholic.  You would think we as an audience might get tired of nuclear bombs being stolen and ���in play” and the bad guys having to break a mad bad scientist out of government custody... but we don’t. In fact there’s a comfort in the familiarity of it all.  If you’re the girlfriend of Ethan Hunt, do you get tired of him always running away, literally running away, as fast as he can? Or is it a turn-on? Probably some of both.  The Grateful Dead line, “Steal your face right off your head” often comes to mind while watching these movies.  Spoiler: No scenes take place at Subway or Applebee’s. They’re all like in front of the Eiffel Tower or the Tate Modern and other very Europeany places. We as an audience aren’t really trying to escape to a Subway. I’m not gay... hear me out... I’m not gay, as far as I know... supposedly we’re all bi and maybe we are and society and Victoria’s Secret have me brainwashed... but why’d they have to fuck up Henry Cavill’s face at the end? Why’d they have to Harvey Dent him? If J. Lo has her backside insured, can we start a GoFundMe page to insure Henry Cavill’s face? They switch out the actresses halfway through the heartfelt exchange at the end. Would be terrible of me to say they change horses midstream... but they kinda do. (Or they do.) But hey, it’s always good to keep actresses working and gainfully employed. They could have switched out for a third and I wouldn’t have even cared.  A lot of these scenes reminded me of those lines in the Miami Vice movie: “How fast does your boat go?” “It goes very fast.”  Some women in the audience got particular pleasure from Henry Cavill getting it at the end, and I suspect some of that was because they knew they couldn’t be with him, he was out of their league, and so they wanted him to suffer. This may be neither here nor there nor hear nor theare, but Fallout reminded me of Skyfall, in its tone and length and its bit of brooding. Any chance we could look forward to an Outfall or a Skyout? This movie reminded me again and again that I never want to get punctured in the neck by anything ever. As a wrist watch obsessive, I wished they had used the surveillance intelligence to zoom in on the characters’ watches. Pretty sure Simon Pegg was wearing a nice square Bell & Ross watch.  In those great MacGruber skits from SNL, MacGruber would always have to shout, “We don’t have time!” as a bomb is about to explode. Either Fallout quotes MacGruber or MacGruber quotes Fallout or maybe it’s just the similar circumstances, I don’t know.  I know Jamie Foxx, when they did Collateral, used to call Tom Cruise “T Money.” That’s a cool nickname.  There are no trashy accents either. There are only really lovely British accents or scary Eastern European accents of some kind. T Money is great at flying helicopters and jumping out of buildings... but is he mediocre at any regular activities, like playing softball? Sometimes the change of pace can mess with people. That White Widow lady had such svelte, ripped arms. She could put me in a headlock any time. I saw this movie closer to the city, in an urban area you could say, and I’m so glad I did because I sat next to a couple and I overheard the woman say to the man before the movie, “Why you always have to be so loud and making a scene?” and the man said, “Why you always criticizing? Just let me be me.” And I’m so glad he was being him because throughout the whole movie, or every action scene (which was ninety percent of the movie), he would very vocally respond to every punch and kick and neck puncture. “OH!” “OH, SHIT!” “AAOOH!” “Nice... NICE!” As well as seeing Tom Cruise and planes, trains, and automobiles at an accelerated rate, isn’t this why we go to the movies?
