Why Does Everyone Struggle With Solarpunk Stories?
Fun Fact: My own introduction to Solarpunk happened in Germany on a German convention. I met a friend, who I had not seen in quite a few years in the creator alley, and they and their partner had just brought out an indie comic, which they introduced as a Solarpunk comic.
I do however wonder whether it really could be considered Solarpunk now, as it was mostly fantasy (which in itself is not a criterium), but the main overlap with Solarpunk generally was this idea of using the Art Noveau aesthetic for everything. From what I remember, it was not really very concerned with any of the Solarpunk themes - nor with anything considered Solarpunk technology - though I do remember some flying machines that were powered by sun energy.
But it makes me think about one thing: There are still barely any explicit Solarpunk novels out there. Like, there are a few, yes, but barely any. Most of what is considered Solarpunk works is stuff that folks among the Solarpunk community have looked at and gone: "Oh, yeah, this kinda feels Solarpunk, doesn't it?"
Most of the Solarpunk books out there are in fact anthologies. (And yes, I plan to continue reviewing those, I right now just struggle with reading because of health-related issues.) And even among those anthologies I will look at half the stories and think to myself: "Well, but are they really Solarpunk?"
In some cases that is because the stories in question are really build around too much of a dystopia. In other cases it is, because even the technology/ecology part is not really there.
And sure, I am talking a lot about how it is fairly easy to tell a Solarpunk story if you just let go of the idea that a Solarpunk story has to be one certain thing - rather than any kind of story that is set in a Solarpunk setting and deals with Solarpunk themes. But on the other hand it is not like I am writing a whole lot in the genre either, is it?
Admittedly the reason for me might be a bit of another one than for other writers. For me it is simply that I find it currently hard to motivate myself to write anything in terms of original fiction, because... Well, writing fanfics is just a whole lot more fun, and also will get me a lot more feedback and such.
And of course, on the side of the publishing industry I just don't know if anyone but Android Press and World Weaver Press even do much in publishing of Solarpunk stories? I am honestly not entirely certain.
But there definitely is some sort of struggle here right now. And that is without me going into the fact that half of what is published in Germany with the lable of "Solarpunk" is actually Cyberpunk but with some mild ecological themes in there.
And yeah, all in all it really makes me wonder, where the issue lies.
Is it a thing of a missing community for Solarpunk creatives, especially writers? Because I know that most online Solarpunk communities focus a ton on guerilla gardening, second hand clothes, and right to repair - but just don't have a ton of striving creative groups among them. The one Discord Server for Solarpunk writers I was on got deleted by the mod for being inactive.
So, yeah. I don't know.
Would someone be interested in another sort of community for Solarpunk creatives? And if so, what kind of community?

Signed up to watch a 2h speech / presentation I need to attend... BUT it is online via zoom so I don't have to go outside and can sit on my couch in a blanket and drink coffe!
It's about new AI laws and legally save AI software... I need to know this as graphics designer 😔
---
lol started with a AI animated avatar / deepfake of himself that totally looked AI because the hand movements didn't match what he said.
Oh no, he is a Zuckerberg fanboy.
This is going to be fun. (probably will get pissed along the way tho)
But they have some lawyers there to answer questions. Yay Christian Solmecke is there too (popular german media lawyer on yt)
---
so far: unlike human made work, AI generated artwork or designs are not copyrighted (in germany) AND if the AI piece is based on an existing human made work and it's still visible in the AI piece you need to get the copyright from the original owner / creator (includes designs, logos, images, text and music)
Copyright owner can opt-out and sue if it's still gets used for AI training / generation (american laws aren't finished yet but also will go into that direction)
---
They test different AI software to give out a little comic scenario. And oh boy as a graphic designer with knowledge about typography the text is triggering me so hard. It's so bad. SEE alone typography is an area that can't be made by a machine because even tho it is based on design laws it's still an intuitive human-eye based way of design. There is a difference between mathematical-centered and optical-centered.
---
Man they are all so horny for AI and reduction of jobs and costs.... But no matter how good an AI could generate an image or video... it will never give you the raw files where you can do individual changes afterwards.
Besides that I still think humanity isn't ready yet for the power and options AI is giving us. (at least one of the very high quality AI builders isn't selling it atm because they are afraid that it will get misused for fake news and stuff, so they try to find a way to prevent that before they bring it on the market)
So many creative jobs and professions that will die out just for us to get 100% digital made "creative" content and advertisements :/ (so far even the most high quality AI still has some small uncanny vibe). Like even actors will be replaced in the future... all they need to do is allow companies to use their face / body.... there is literally a Black Mirror episode about that.
Reminds me of that one AI kpop idol project I have seen last year on tiktok.... absolutely creepy and wrong. I know some of us are simping over anime, game or vocaloid characters but... man idk, do yall want to simp over uncanny digital kpop idols who don't even exist nor actually work for their skills and talent? 💀 Being into an idol is not just about the visuals and songs, it's about their personality and individuality.... for me at least.... (but of course the kpop industry is one of the first trying this). I do like Taemin for example beacuse he's breaking out of the industry norms. AI dude could never be on his level.
---
"Amazing. In a company in the US a CEO told us that with the use of an AI they could remove 700 jobs and save so much money!"
.... yeah cool. Maybe we should remove ALL jobs on this earth and let AI do it, so we humans don't do anything at all anymore. Oh wait, no, of course we still have to do hard repetitive labor like some work drones because it's cheaper than to build and maintain actual robots for these jobs.
---
BRUH of course the event is mainly to sell an AI class from the hosting company. For the cheap price of 4900€ FOR THE LAST TIME because the next class will be over 6000€
I feel like AI bros always hype each other up to blow it all up artificially. Just like NFT and the mobile game market.
---
DID HE JUST SAY that there aren't enough graphic designer and programmer on the market and that they will profit from the support of AI?? (it's actually oversaturated and therefore jobs are hard to get) AI bros really live in a secluded bubble hu? Of course none of these dudes in this event are from the creative industry but lawyers and CEOs

Nintendo-vember Level 2: Howard and Nester: How you are not supposed to pay tribute to a comic
Ahhhh, Nintendo Power. Published by Nintendo of America from 1988 till August of 2012, this magazine was part of the childhood of many Nintendo fans. A magazine that functioned as a gaming guide, advertisement for new games and just fun overall for people enthusiastic for Nintendo.
While we did not have Nintendo Power like that where I am from, we had a similar magazine called “Club Nintendo”, which ran from the 90s up till the early 2000s (2002 to be precise), after which it unfortunately got unceremoniously canceled. I had access to these issues thanks to relatives who enjoyed them a lot and honestly, I enjoyed them too. Very informative, highlighting many games and filled with some really fun comic stories here and there.
Now, Club Nintendo wasn’t entirely like Nintendo Power though. For example, among our comics in the magazine we did not have the subject of today’s post: Howard and Nester.
Now for those unaware who they are, a short explanation: Howard and Nester were the characters of a short series of comic strips from the very early days of Nintendo Power. Howard was an adult business man with a bow tie that Matt Smith may like, while Nester was a ten to eleven year old redhead NES player. In other words, he was a little shit.
Howard himself btw was based on Howard Phillips, initially a warehouse manager for Nintendo of America, who at a very young age (he was only in his 20s when he started working for Nintendo) joined the company and would play a major role in the marketing of the NES launch in America. He was also an avid videogamer of the “olden times” so to speak and was Nintendo of America’s spokesperson number uno. Liked by many within the industry, he did however eventually leave Nintendo in 1991 (at only 32 years old), to pursue careers in other companies. Which did not work out quite as well, according to Wikipedia. Though he is still hanging around, kicking, playing and working in the industry, for some german firm no one really knows about.
Man, he even looks kinda like the eleventh Doctor.
Anyway, back to the comic itself: The comic strips were essentially just meant as short, two page fillers ad would feature the caricature of Howard Phillips and Nester, the later supposed to represent Nintendo fanboys, finding themselves in environments related to a current videogame and dealing with whatever situation. Most of the time just ending in some comedic pratfall for a rather impatient Nester to suffer.
Then, after 25 strips, Howard, in relation to Howard Phillips leaving Nintendo, also left the comic, resulting in the thing ending and Nester going on some mini adventures on his own.
Now honestly, reading those strips I don’t think they are really bad. Howard as a character is rather supportive, there are small hints to games they thematically integrate in the comics here and there and some of the scenarios are kinda fun. Plus even the linework is okay for this sort of comic.
However, I genuinely think that Nester is a little bit of a shit. Especially in his first two strips.
He just comes off as smug and a bit of a know it all. Believing he is better than Howard, not grateful for any advice and trying to come off like he is an expert in the eyes of younger, impressionable kids.
Oh god, he is Dobson!
Though that may be what adds to the pratfalls he suffers then. In addition, I am a bit baffled by what games they supposedly star in or how some of the games they talk about are executed in comic.
I mean, the Ducktales comic for example has nothing to do with Ducktales really aside of the moon duck enemy thing kinda being in it (though that may have been related to Disney telling them not to use Scrooge)
And then there is the fact, that a comic based on the Golgo 13 game was made.
You know, THE Golgo 13? The game based on the famous manga about an assassin for hire?
I mean, what next? A comic based on them in the setting of Home Sweet Home? Though that may have been cool.
It is just, I can see how the duo left some impression on early readers, but I can’t see how they could get quite the appeal, that back in 2008 Nintendo Power would release THIS comic, featuring a now adult Nester talking to his son about the good old days. A little manga-esque like tribute, some people enjoyed.
Not so much You know who though, who decided to draw instead THIS comic in order to “honor” the two and the style of the comic. And in doing so just ended up showing that he kinda never understood the character of Nester, nor the concept behind the original tribute in the first place.
So, why does the comic suck? Because it is just an excuse for Dobson to project his own shitty opinion about how Nintendo “dishonored” the origins of the characters he claims to love onto Nester. All while making also both characters accidentally come off as losers and creepy. Particularly Howard comes off as horrible in the comic. After all, based on the set up established via the first two panels, I can only assume that the guy kidnapped a ten year old boy against his will and put him into cryostasis. Separating him from his family and friends, only to thaw him up again twenty years later. And for what? To show him how far games have come since then?
I get that the comic is supposed to be a joke (though I see nothing in it that makes me laugh), but… well..
For that set up is rather unfortunate and feels more like it should be part of some existential horror story about someone finding themselves completely displaced in time and seeing, how their disappearance tore apart their loved ones. I for one rather ask myself, what happened to Nester’s parents? Were they accused of killing their son and send to prison? Did they commit suicide? Did Howard just kill them to get to Nester in the first place?
And the “motivation” to freeze him -I want to show you how games are played in the future- is just… that doesn’t even feel like a plan. I am genuinely at loss for words to explain the “logic” that Howard must have had and how none of that helps “the joke”.
Like look, the idea that Howard would e.g. pull out some magic item or machine to show Nester how in the future games are played and giving him a bit of a cultural shock only to return back to the present, feels like a set up that could have worked. But this is not the set up of this comic. This comic has Howard use an extreme measurement to achieve his goal, that comes just off as psychotic.
But hey, why bother elaborating on the ramifications of Howard having tortured a child like that (which feels like a great disservice to the real Howard Phillips), when there are games to play.
Or rather, complain about, because that is the only thing Nester does, starting from his shock at seeing Link now having blond hair.
Which is stupid as shit. I am sorry, but considering the kid had been on ice since the late 80s according to this comic, I think his first reaction to seeing game graphics from around 2008 would be “holy shit” as a result of a cultural shock. Not the fact that Link now has blond hair.
Also, way to prove how Nester is only a phony Nintendo fanboy, because he calls Pit by the name of Kid Icarus
See, little trivia bit here: The tendency of calling little Pit (btw, one of my favorite characters in the Nintendo canon ever since I played Uprising. I love that little shota) Kid Icarus, came mostly because of the awful Captain N: The Game Master cartoon from 1989, which named him by his game title. All while the game was a stable of the NES library since 1987 and Pit’s name was a stable in its freaking manual
Look for yourself: Page 7.
Also, getting riled up over Mario not being from Brooklyn when that was NEVER a point in the actual games anyway or Link’s hair color?
Hm, doesn’t that sound familiar…
Look, I am not much a fan of Nester based on the strips I saw, but it would be obvious even to Helen Keller, that Nester here is not himself. He is a stand in for Dobson and his shitty opinions on how Nintendo “betrayed” the old NES fans by making Mario and Co more marketable and ignore their “true and honest” origins. The “real” Nester based on the strips comes off to me more like someone who would freaking geek out at seeing his favorite game characters being these detailed, cartoony badasses fighting equally great villains.
After all, playing as Link who can ride on a horse and fights a giant sized pig demon? Mario throwing planets at Bowser? Mario and Link duking it out with other heroes? Seeing Pit and Palutena in Smash Bros Brawl? Which btw came out in January of 2008, so Nester complaining about not seeing Pit- oh I am sorry “Kid Icarus” would be inaccurate too.
The point I am trying to make is, that if you grew up with the bare minimum presentation some NES games had, you would be gushing over anything “modern”
Heck, considering the sort of stuff Nester played or was into in the comics, he would likely drop the Wii once he learnt about stuff like God of War, Ratchet and Clank and other “badass” and “cool” games other consoles can offer.
But no. Nester is simply overwhelmed with the concept of 3D and “realism”. Though lets be real here, I think realism in videogames is an oxymoron, independent of what console we talk about. I mean, what is e.g. “realistic” about Mario, Sonic, God of War, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil etc? I know at least half a class of biologists who cry each time a new Resident Evil scientist comes off with a new variant of the virus.
Anyway, he is so overwhelmed, he simply just wants to go back to the old days and the game he used (or rather “use”. Btw, great job at even failing at simple past tense) to play.
Only loving the Nintendo Wii once Nester tells him about the online shop and that he can play on it the same shlock he already likely has memorized before Howard put him into cryostasis and as such deprived him of a proper childhood.
Meaning that Howards “plan” to show Nester the future of gaming failed, because instead of embracing the new while also loving the old, he simply rejects the former and embraces the later even more tightly, putting it on a pedestal the same way Dobson does.
Which frankly, is one of the aspects I find the most annoying about Dobson in general when it comes to Nintendo. I get it. He grew up with the NES and I admit, the console had some really great games that build the corner stones of many franchises and the Nintendo empire.
But, and you can crucify me for saying that, by modern day standards (or heck, even standards set up by the follow up console, the SNES) the NES era was kinda bad and many games, even a lot of the classics, can’t stand the test of time as much anymore than they once did.
Before you burn me on the stake, let me explain: I myself grew up with the SNES and GameBoy as my first consoles, so I never played the NES games, even though I was aware of them through Club Nintendo. Only in recent years, thanks to the NES mini and some game collections I downloaded on the PS4, I got to play some of the classic games. And frankly, I think a lot of them suck in some regard. Like the technical limitations of the time, the at times unfair programming to make certain games extra hard and how quick you can actually get through the game once you know what to do, make some games a bit of an underwhelming experience.
Granted, unlike Dobson I will admit, that my opinion is very biased. Coming from my own love of the SNES, as well as decades of playing other games too, including sequels to many of these starter games that managed to polish up things in term of gameplay and presentation. And there is no denying, that there have still been many great games on the console by Nintendo itself, but also third party publishers such as Capcom, Squaresoft, Enix or Konami.
Kirby, Mario Bros 3, Megaman 3 up to 6, Ducktales, Castlevania 3, Contra, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Earthbound are at least some titles that come to my mind.
But it was also the console that gave us stuff like the LJN published videogames, got a shit ton of unnecessary equipment like the Power Glove, established the term “Nintendo Hard” and frankly, I find myself unable to genuinely play the NES Zelda games or Kid Icarus without feeling them quite underwhelming and a bit flawed. So bottom line, I think it was important, I think good stuff came out of it, but it was only the first steps into the right direction. The NES learnt how to walk, so the Switch could run.
Dobson meanwhile worships the era like it was the greatest thing ever, never topped and shoves his opinion into Nester’s mouth. Resulting in the strip’s entire message boiling down essentially to the following:
The past was greater than what we have now and is the only thing I love. Oh, and fuck you for making me try new things.
Which is ironic, coming from the person who among other things would claim that such a behavior is toxic years later. Going onto rants how Kylo Ren is such a nostalgic nerd and criticism of “toxic fans” when he ranted about Star Wars – The Last Jedi and that critics of it are all Nazis. Even though Kylo is the one saying “let the past die”.
youtube
There is also just the fact, that the comic obviously misses the idea behind the original Howard and Nester tribute comic from Nintendo Power.
Like sure, the comic in the magazine was flawed. The manga inspired art work wasn’t that great and Nester felt like he grew up into the sort of young adult who made videos on youtube in the late 2008s, trying to emulate the AVGN by reviewing old NES games and acting like he is hardcore for enjoying “The Wizard”. All while being in reality more of a dork, especially in the eyes of a son that actually comes off as way older than he likely should be if Nester is only in his late twenties or early thirties.
But I think that was kind of the point. Making Nester more a caricature of the “gaming nerd” of the time period, while also indirectly playing a decent tribute to the old days and showing Nester having gotten older, though not necessarily wiser. But considering his kid seems to be doing okay, I doubt he is that terrible of a dad.
Which begs the question though, what is it about the comic that pissed Dobson off that much? The “manga” style? Granted, I think they could have gone more with a style akin to what the original comics had, which is the only thing Dobson has going for his page, that I can actually appreciate. But it could have been worse.
Is it the idea of Nester actually changing as a person, growing up? I mean, considering how allergic Dobson was often times to the idea of change (except when it was related to dumb reboots that may piss off republican strawmen in his head), I could actually believe that.
But if that was what pissed him off and his idea was to make a comic doing a tribute to these two the “right way”, Dobson failed miserably. Because all he did was make Howard come off like a psychopath for freezing up a kid to show him some games and Nester like a moron who can’t appreciate positive change in the media he consumes. All because Dobson was rather focused to vent his own frustration about Nintendo through their mouths, rather than respectfully draw a story with them. Something he even admitted
The artwork may be decent here, but the writing is a failed assignment.
The most ridiculous thing about that being, that either some time later or before, Dobson made a way better comic starring NEster, that actually gets the vibe of the original
And before someone claims I can only complain and not bring some alternative to the table how to execute the comic, here is what I may have done:
Start the comic as Howard and Nester in the Back to The Future NES game, supposedly having just finished it. Only for Nester to end up playing with the controls of the DeLorean and in doing so transporting him and Howard into the future. Materializing in 2008, they then learn about the actual positive things happening to videogames ever since , though Howard may also learn to some degree about the bad stuff whe he reads up an article titled “Rise and Fall of videogames” or something related to Jack Thompson). Have Nester for example geek out about Smash Bros, question what a Pikachu is, hitting himself in the head accidentally with a Wii Remote, but overall try to also give a positive message to it all.
Like Nester befriending bunch of kids via Wii playing. The comic then ending with the two travelling back to 1988, Nester all pumped up about the prospect how great videogames will turn out in the future -perhaps also being a bit impatient at the prospect to wait 20 years to play Smash Bros Brawl again- while Howard muses about the things yet to come. The final panel perhaps being set in 2008 with an older Nester looking over a little brother who befriended by accident his younger self, challenging the younger one to a rematch he had “lost” in the past.
I know, sounds corny as fuck, but it at least would nullify the entire “I kidnapped you and froze you up” implications of the original comic by Dobson.
Now, unlike Dobson, I do not intend to leave a bitter taste in the mouth of the readers, so I want to end this post on a sweeter note by informing you about the following:
When Nintendo Power eventually ended on issue 285 in December of 2012, someone at the editorial team must have remembered Howard and Nester, because they decided to have this little two page comic in it.
Nester, drawn in the classic style, as a way more well adjusted adult than in the 2008 comic, reminiscing about the magazine that he owes his existence and had brought him many hours of joy. His son helping him accept that it may be over for the magazine, but that the enjoyment will never 100% go away. Even adding a little framed bow tie in the background of the last panel, symbolizing that in hindsight Nester likely came to appreciate Howard as more than just an annoying mentor sort of figure. All before heading out to play a new Mario game with his son. Leaving the past behind but close, while embracing the future.
A comic, that in my opinion hits on the sweet “bittersweet” spot of such things as Fullmetal Alchemist or Amphibia. Giving the “story” a proper wrap up and assuring people that it is over, but that the characters themselves in a way are -unlike Dobbear- never gone.
And if you want to read all the strips of Howard and NEster, here is a link to the archive I found for this post.
Level 2 is done. Time for some bonus round and then the next level soon. Cause now we are really going deep into his whinning over the superiority of the old Nintendo canon

I am reading articles before going to bed but the comment section of one is keeping me awake.
Its an article about the decline of America, and cue the stupid Americans defending their country. There was literally one comment about 'how great the US is', listing all the great things that they have bestowed the world, like Facebook, Instagram and FRENCH fries.
How stupid can you be to see the term 'French' and be like, 'yeah that is American'. Technically there are a few countries claiming they were the first but none of them is the US
It's especially epic cringe levels every time they are trying to discuss and compare themselves to other countries. There are not one, but two comments from people saying stuff about Japan's 'lack of cultural influence' when Japan's comic and animation industries have been beating the Americans for the past few years.
Don't even get me started on them comparing the US to historical European empires. There is one in particular that is talking about the fall of the Roman empire, but its not what happened at all, they literally mention nothing of Germanic tribes and the dawn of the Frankish empire which is what primarily caused their fall. I mention before I was raised and have roots in the Dutch south, where the tribe who initiated the start of the Germanic rebellion lived. 2000 years later and we are still proud of being their descendants. You do not talk about the fall of the Roman empire without mentioning my ancestors as their cry for all tribes to gather and beat the Romans oppressing them was instrumental to their downfall.
Their downfall was a plan orchestrated by an oppressed tribe who wanted to be free, pretending anything different is a lie.
But then again, with people like Candace Owens making educational videos about slavery where she literally denies that Romans even had slaves, its no wonder Americans don't know what actually happened to the Roman Empire and that it was slavery that actually caused their downfall due to the aforementioned rebellion literally being the tribal chief becoming enslaved under some kind of false suspisions. That the Romans sent him back after they realized they made a mistake and that he was wrongfully enslaved didn't matter, it was all the proof the tribe needed to have that the Romans would enslave them at any given opportunity. So they rebelled.
I could continue on, but I fear I will be ranting endlessly because of how stupid Americans are.
EDIT: Thank the angels for that American apologizing. As there actually is an American apologizing that they are usually exporting their worst products instead of their best ones and how they haven't been this ashamed of their nation since the Iraq invasion. I want to agree but at the same time I'd like to give them a hug for having to bear the shame for stuff like gun export and their recent flopping pop culture.
EDIT 2: Alright this might keep me up all night but oh my, an American just unknowingly roasted themselves by saying in an argument how culture is the better dressed sibling of religion. Now I understand why Americans whose country on an average is more religious then a bunch of European nations combined, have such poor fashion sense.
#tetsutalk#americans are idiots#americans are stupid#Americans are ignorant#Thats part of why your precious US is declining actually#You dont know friend or foe

Favourite books of 2022
I don't think I read even one book that came out in 2022? So these are simply the books I've read during the year. A lot of non-fiction in this list, for some reason.
This year I read 105... stories? between books and comic books but only 16 are worth mentioning.
Fiction
(didn't read much fiction this year)
Medea by Christa Wolf. Read for German Literature class. It is of course a retelling of the Ancient Greek myth. It was great but I still prefer Cassandra.
Snowdrift & other stories by Georgette Heyer. A collection of her earliest short stories. I bought this second-hand in a charity shop in England (the flex) and it's such a gorgeous edition! Plus Georgette Hayer is delightful! The witty banter and humour are right up my alley. Can't wait to read more from her.
Loveless by Alice Oseman (yes, Heartstopper's author). Oh, all the aroace feels. It made me cry. Really, really recommended to any aroace-spec or questioning folks.
Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. A Victorian classic, read for a Victorian Lit class. I've never been madder at a book before. I was literally fuming for two weeks afterwards! I have the sequel on my shelf right now and I count on reading that in 2023.
Non-fiction
Come Fly The World by Julia Cooke. A history of stewardesses of PanAm at the beginning of the Jet Age. It's fundamentally about women fresh out of college who longed to leave their hometown and travel and then they did. Plus, PanAm's involvement with the Vietnam War and the stewardesses' role in all of this and the fight for fairer contracts for stewardesses. It was amazing.
Atomic Habits, by James Clear. Game changer, especially the introduction. The way I see habit and productivity has shited a lot after this book.
Junkyard Planet by Adam Minter. The first one is about the junk industry around the planet, how the old cables you throw in the US might end up in China, where the plastic is reused for a new computer that gets then selled back to the US. It was so fascinating. I had never thought about half of it.
Secondhand by Adam Minter. This is kind of the sequel. It focuses on the secondhand business. It has a very interesting section on how Goodwill shops actually work and another on how Japan's idea of shopping secondhand completely shifted in the span of 5 years or so. Highly recommended.
The Birth of the Pill by Jonathan Eig. Read in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade. It was so bloody interesting. It doesn't only talk about the research behind the Pill. It also goes all the way back to the sexual revolution in the US during the first half of the 20th century, how the term "birth control" was coined, how Planned Parenthood was founded, etc. So fascinating!
Jane Austen and Food by Maggie Lane. It talks both about what people in the Regency Era ate and about how Austen uses food in her novels to characterize her characters. Such a different and fun approach!
Women’s Work by Elizabeth Wayland Barber. Textiles in prehistoric times AND why textiles were (and are still) considered women's work. It's mostly about weaving (and I don't weave, only knit) but it was incredibly fascinating. Recommended to all fabric crafters with an interest in history.
Diario di un'apprendista astronauta (Journal of an astronaut apprentice) by Samantha Cristoforetti. Astrosamantha was the first Italian woman to become an astronaut. This is her memoir about her experience from her being selected to the end of her first space travel in 2015 (she went back in 2022 too). Now I want to read every astronaut biography ever. Not sure whether it's available in English.
Comic books
Dimentica il mio nome by Zerocalcare. This one is only in Italian, sorry. If you are curious about Zerocalcare and/or Italian, I'd recommend looking up his cartoon series Strappare Lungo I Bordi (it's produced by Netflix). This was my first time reading Zerocalcare which is such a shame! My sis owns another one of his comics so guess what I will be borrowing in the new year...
Secret Playlist by 2F. Korean webtoon, available on Webtoon. It just ended a couple of days ago and I'm so going to miss it! It's about Hanju, who posts songs online as Plii and doesn't want to reveal her secret identity, and Doguk, an idol who wants to collab with Plii. And they are classmates!
Positively Yours by Jung Lee. Another Korean webtoon. This one is about a surprise pregnancy after a one-night stand. It's also extremely cute. I read it 2 times in one year.
Persepolis by Marjani Satrapi. Read both volumes in the aftermath of what is currently happening in Iran. I'm 100% certain that you've seen at least one drawing from this comic. I didn't know anything at all about Iran so this was a nice introduction to the subject.

Tora is Roma? I thought that was Cindy?
I mean this in the nicest way possible, but there can be two Roma women in one comic.
But yeah! It was not the original intent for the character, but it has been canon(-ish at times) since Justice League: Generation Lost #12 which was published in 2010 I believe.
To clarify, it is not a GOOD comic or a good depiction of the Roma people (who face pretty much constant, virulent racism from the comics industry).
Summary under the cut!
The basic premise is that, rather than actually being a Nordic ice goddess, tora is a poor Romani girl who is convinced and has convinced others that she’s a goddess. And then it gets worse!
Toras father tries to hide her powers because her grandfather (who is essentially the Boogeyman who embodies all the racist fears about Roma people) believes in “the old ways” and that Tora IS the re-embodiment of an ice goddess, and he believes her grandfather will use her powers to steal.
(Because, y’know, they’re all thieves!)
When Toras thirteen, her grandfather even tries to kidnap her (which is another racist myth, though usually focused on infants) because she’s speaking German and so has abandoned her culture. There’s a lot of weird subtext to Tora being so white-passing and having these things mark her as ‘the special one’ versus her more traditional Roma grandfather who is of course evil and oppressive.
The new origin ends with her killing her father and grandfather with her powers paralleled against the present day, where her fragile woman mind has finally realized she was delusional, hysterical, etc. and was never a goddess at all.
Here’s her final line from the issue, to top off the racism:
So again, not a GOOD story which is why I’m so damn pissed Tom King has reestablished it as canon in Human Target #2. For the past decade, her creators (Giffen & Dematties) have basically gone ‘oh fuck that’ and used her original backstory, so I thought this had been left as a relic of the past. But now it’s canon again!
The only potential good side to keeping this hot mess (which directly contradicts Dan Vado’s very good arc about the JLI going to Tora’s Kingdom in JLA) in canon is that it could allow Tora to be written as positive Roma rep going forward which is something comics needs so desperately. However, her being Roma was conveniently left out of King’s retelling. So we get all of the bad and none of the good. Yay.

Silverliner Cults and Pet Cars
So this is what happens when @rise-comics and I are left mostly alone in a discord server.
Most of this is canon.
I like to think that the one speaking english is the metroliner cab car
[12:15 AM]and all the acelas speak french just to annoy the rest of the NEC
📷Rise Comics(she/her) — Today at 12:18 AM Buzz(in a Roz voice): I have not a goddamned clue what y’all are saying
📷@Jz1 and all the acelas speak french just to annoy the rest of the NEC 📷Rise Comics(she/her) — Today at 12:19 AM Then they meet the one Charger who sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger
📷@Jz1 Every charger has a different accent, which really does not mesh well with the rest of Amtrak, most of whom were built in Pennsylvania or Indiana and therefore have the blandest accent possible 📷Rise Comics(she/her) — Today at 12:21 AM It’s called variety
[12:22 AM]- The one Long Range Charger, currently drunk off their ass(edited) 📷Jz1 — Today at 12:23 AM It's called One train with four accents. They send a Genesis to pick up the new Chargers and he spends the entire ride home regretting ever making fun of the Acelas because at least they don't speak with an accent jesus christ this isn't in english
[12:23 AM]He gets to beech grove and is visibly twitching
📷Rise Comics(she/her) — Today at 12:24 AM When they’re at Chicago, the Genesis has started contemplating murder

Comic Review: Cartoon Network Presents #6
I said I was gonna do this, so let’s get this rolling!
Okay, so Cartoon Network Presents was among the first lineup of DC’s CN comics, alongside their Scooby-Doo book and The Flintstones and the Jetsons. Those are pretty self-explanatory, but CN Presents was meant to be a grab bag of the rest of their lineup, featuring favorites from the vast Hanna-Barbera library as well as some of their recent hits. At this point, I believe they were just doing Dexter’s Lab and Cow & Chicken, as Johnny Bravo’s first season was more or less written off as a failure at the time. But don’t worry, Johnny will have his day.
Okay, so confession time- this story is not new to me. Way back when, DC released a freebie comic which had stories from each of their three CN titles, and this was featured in there, alongside a short Scooby story where a stalker keeps on doning a costume to get closer to Daphne, and a Jetsons story where George is replaced by a robot version of himself. Needless to say, some serious memories came crawling back to me when I saw the cover.
Anyway, both of the stories featured in this issue are done by regulars in the comic industry, and I’ll bring up how apparent that is in a bit,
That said, I can see this story actually fit in an episode of Cow & Chicken, as it’s a cautionary tale that doesn’t go in the usual direction you’d expect, like many of David Feiss’ cartoons tend to do things. This starts off with Chicken littering, which goes against what his and Cow’s teacher taught them in school. Chicken, as per usual, is apathetic to his loud teacher’s learnings, but he changes his tune when Cow mentions that bringing in metal can bring you some change,
Needless to say, Chicken has some ideas, and he starts scourging around town. There’s a slight detour when he learns that you only receive payments from going to the trash collector directly, but it gives him incentive to have Flem and Earl help him out.
Alongside a dubious reading of Malcolm X’s philosophy.
The three of them find enough metal to hopefully make them a little richer, and they’re greeted at the trash heep by a weird looking Cerberus creature, and guess who they belong to!
Yeah, it’s the Red Guy. It’s not a Cow & Chicken segment without him, is it?
I had a better screenshot of his appearance, but it came out weird and I don’t feel like taking another, so let’s skip to this part where Chicken is caught cheating the scale, and is about to be rightfully punished along with Flem and Earl. Not by death, but by filling up the Red Guy’s furnace, which is actually pretty fair.
But have no fear, Supercow is on the way to come save the day! This comic even translates her dialogue for us, which the show never did.
It ends with her beating the shit out of Cerberus and the Red Guy, even though Chicken deserves his punishment. Flem and Earl, not so much.
It’s a fun enough story, and it does seem like a perfect fit for the show. The dialogue fits right in with the show.
Even Flem’s awkward, vaguely racist broken English. I’m not touching that one...
The art style is a little off, though, looking more like a regular DC comic than an episode of Cow & Chicken.
I mean, it looks like Chicken, but doesn’t the penciling look closer to an issue of Robin at the time instead of something? But it’s a minor complaint, as it’s still a fun read.
The b story is new to me, with a Quick Draw McGraw story. It starts off pretty ordinary, as El Kabong OLE’s himself to save the day. Er, not that ordinary, as El Kabong is a bit of a klutz and usually needs Baba Looey’s help, but it’s okay, something’s about to change.
It turns out that El Kabong’s identity may be liable for copyright infringement, as there’s a Canadian crime fighter known as Le Kabong.
We meet him here, and I believe he’s meant to be Loopy de Loop, but he looks more like Hokey Wolf... or maybe Mr. Jinx. Hanna-Barbeta made some nice-looking characters, but they get pretty samey.
Anyway, his agency was the one who ordered a cease and desist to El Kabong, while his French Canadian doppelganger refuses to follow suit, considering it unheroic. Until it’s discovered that someone kidnapped the local hockey team, and he takes action... so I guess he blames the devil we know? That isn’t really explained, as the next panel shows Quick Straw accepting a battle of the Kabongs.
So we’re about to get a WWE (or I guess WWF. Or maybe WCW?) match, until a new challenger approaches, with a German vigilante jumping in.
And then many more. This switches from wrestling to Super Smash Bros to a full on battle royale of the localized knock-offs. Which I won’t lie, it’s a pretty funny idea.
Luckily, what’s a Kabong without a trusty sidekick to save the day? A few of them attempt to team up to find a way to put a stop to this, including one who looks like Boo Boo with Yogi’s hat and Johnny Bravo’s glasses.
So it ends with the Kabong from Mars (no Spiders) threatening all of the puny humans to stop their shenanigans, and go back to their duties. Which hey, it works! And the story ends with Quick Draw attempting to turn the ten million pesos El Kabong received at the beginning from saving the day into cash. Except pesos are basically useless, which is funny haha right?
This reads like a Hanna-Barbera writer from the 90′s attempting to write a classic character in the present day, and mostly works alright. This does show off one problem with Quick Draw though, that its take on Hispanic culture during the period of the Wild West is problematic. Baba Looey for instance has an exaggerated voice, and he probably needs an overhaul to work today (how did that work in Jellystone btw? I still need to see it). And unfortunately, this point in the late 90′s isn’t all that much more sympathetic to Hispanic culture, as their take mostly stays the same.
But away from that, it’s pretty funny. I do really like Quick Draw when it focuses on how pathetic he is as a supposed hero, either with or without the El Kabong persona.
But I wouldn’t have known if this was in if I didn’t pick up the book. I do understand why Cow & Chicken was the main attraction- *insert Malcolm in the Middle “future is now, old man” img here*- but part of the appeal of Cartoon Network at the time was the mix of old and new school. It wasn’t uncommon to see a classic like Quick Draw next to a modern fav like Cow & Chicken.
But oh well, let’s finish this up. The letters column features a 12 year old offering some of his cartoon ideas- I hope John made it; another boy named John who offers a cute drawing of Space Ghost, and asks about Jan, Jase, and Blip, while insulting the latter, which the editor is not here for; and another boy asking if there are plans for stories featuring 2 Stupid Dogs or Secret Squirrel, as well as hopes for a Cow & Chicken comic. The editor shoots down 2 Stupid Dogs happening, and to be fair, I don’t believe that ever happens. Classic cartoons from 40 years earlier? Sure. Something that ended about five years earlier? Old news. But I do believe Secret Squirrel does show up at some point.
The editor then bemoans how no girls brought in letters this month, and offers a preview of the next issue, which involves Wacky Races. And guess what, I have that one too!
The issue proper ends with an editorial about the importance of recycling, which is fine and all, but my reaction to reading this was “blahblahblah put on more cartoons”
Not bad! Oh, and one more thing of note.
I know, I know, they’re the enemy, and I was all over CN at this point, but I have memories of this promotion. Even though I believe it was long over at this point, and Alex Mack should have aired its last episodes before this issue hit stands.
Here’s an ad! And now it’s in your head. Sorry/you’re welcome!

I’m a hard worker, fairly athletic, I’d learn some jutsu from somewhere and just go wandering around the world. If I die, I die. Plus there’s a chance to bang Kakashi and I’m not gonna pass that up. 3) Ya know what? I’m gonna say my own original world. Where there’s magic, and black jack, and the america’s equivalent doesn’t get colonized.
Favourite colour: Greens
Why I chose my URL: All the way back in 2014, around when I first started thinking, “hey that Danzo guy is actually kinda interesting.” I was teasing my brother who like any sensible person went “ew Danzo.” So I jokingly said, hey he’s taking in orphans would a bad guy do that. Moments later, I needed to come up with some uncommon phrase for whatever reason, and I thought. No one would ever say the words, “Hey there goes that good guy Danzo.”
And the name goodguydanzo was born.
I had my main as that for a couple months before I decided I didn’t want to bother my friends over there with all the Naruto, and made this.
I guess I’ll go ahead and tag @fineillsignup @hiruzensux @saengak and anyone else who wants to.
#lol I can't believe this started back then#like the little icon is probably the third thing I ever drew digitally#like technically goodguydanzo existed before i went to college#that's kinda crazy#well I guess we'll see if this blog makes it to 72 years#then we'll seal it away

BML Livestream Reaction 6/9/2020
To my lovely H.H. viewers, listeners, readers:
Wow! The livestream today on Ashley's channel was incredible. The fandom raised more than 60,000 dollars for the Black Lives Matter charity. (I was one of the unnoticed ones who donated). I'm just as amazed as the show staff at the sheer generosity and talent of this fandom. There were a lot of hilarious moments and very good improvs as well. (ex. Bosco saying in Alastor's voice: "I'm an unstoppable death machine!" And all the "Oh Ashley," running gags.
Onto theories and clip reveals:
There appear to be at least five episodes for Helluva Boss (maybe) and perhaps for Hazbin Hotel as well. When would episode 12 + come out? 2027? I'll happily wait if I can live and last that long.
The first clip revealed showed Blitzo taking to Loona, him saying "have a treat" and then eating the biscuit. Millie appears to be there with Moxxie, drawing a pentagram symbol on a wall. Perhaps a gateway to the human world?
Blitzo (yells at a shy imp): "You set fire to my fucking office in front of a goddamn client you dipshit, now someone please tell me that hocus pocus book is still intact?"
Loona (holding the Satanic book): "Our only ticket to the living world? Grabbed it."
Blitzo: "That's why you're my favorite, Loony! You get a treat."
Loona: "Ew. Stop."
Blitzo eats a treat with a happy look on his face. An imp in a dress stands in the background. Millie draws a pentagram on the wall.
Blitzo (to Loona) "Oh stop it, I get enough of that from my therapist. Now lets get to it, gang!"
They prepare to enter Earth.
Second clip: We are introduced to Loo-Loo Land, an apple-themed circus/amusement park. Loo-Loo is another term for sh*t or bathrooms, so a fitting name for one in Hell. Loo-Loo is a large creepy apple mascot who appears overly cheerful toward the imps and presumably Octavia, who's not impressed. Stolas then takes Blitzo to the rides. He can be seen in a themed outfit, with an apple on his shirt, sorts, and a balloon in his hand. Lucifer has a bar/land called Loo-Loo Land that the theme park is a bad spinoff of it.
Millie (both wear glasses): (Moxxie) "Come on, it's fun! You've never been here?" Moxxie: "No. Theme parks always disturb me. Especially (shakes) the mascots."
A creepy mascot dressed as a red apple appears behind them. He's a red apple with a missing tooth in a wide grin of teeth and one of the eyes hanging from string.
Loo-Loo (in a southern accent) "Well, hey there!"
Millie and Moxxie scream.
Loo-Loo: "I'm Loo-Loo! Welcome to Loo-Loo land!"
Stolas talks to his daughter Octavia by a dinosaur carousel.
Stolas: "Look, Via, it's Loo-Loo!"
Octavia is not impressed with the childish theme park and the lack of more modern rides and features.
Octavia (British accent): "I have a question."
Loo-Loo: Well ask away, little girlie! (Goofy laugh)"
Octavia: "Is it true that this theme park is really a shameless spin-off of Lucifer's more popular Loo-Loo World?" (Disneyland vs Disneyworld)
Loo-Loo: No."
Octavia: "This place reeks of insecure corporate shame."
Stolas: "Why don't we go check out the rides."
Third clip showed what appears to be a rival company to Immediate Murder Professionals. It's called CHERUB, consisting of flying singing sheep with halos and angel wings. It can be assumed that they come from Heaven. Do they save lives (like the alternate E.L.F. in Heavenuva Boss) or do they grant miracles while scamming people? One things for sure, they are super cute. Hmm...maybe they are part of brainwashed sheep who want to spread Heaven's culture so others can mindlessly follow it? Or maybe just as a way to bring down I.M.P. to prove that they can be the best demon killers around? Blitzo blows up a TV in frustration. Now I.M.P. has to find a way to save their company and stop their rivals.
Based on the song, they save people's lives on Earth! (Guess what Hazbins: I thought of the AU E.L.F. characters before this was cool!)
If there is a rival company in Heaven to I.M.P. in Hell, it can only mean one thing: a (Haven) hotel in Heaven may also exist. (Except it would be used to give angels freedom to cause trouble and sin/to be themselves in defiance to the strict rules.)
The sheep angels save people from a car accident, and lift up a rock from a crushed person. They do the work for free, as one of them denies money. With I.M.P. killing humans and C.H.E.R.U.B. saving people, it brings the world in balance. (Though poor sheep: too many people are dying from Covid 19.) Both of them do their part to influence the living world (strangely enough, the Hazbin Earth humans seem accepting of the random creatures who arrive and then leave.
C.H.E.R.U.B. saves people so they have a chance to go to Heaven. I.M.P. kills people for money so the humans wind up in Hell.
Christ's Heavenly Efficient Revivers Under Bless
Christ's Healing Employees Revive Unlimited Bodies

Creating Happy Earth Routines U Believe
Sheep/faun one female: "Luckily for you..."
Sheep two male: "There is something we can do..."
Both: "We can help you feel alive, so you can save some time!(waste and drive?)" (two sheep stand beside a baby angel and all smile)
"Cause here at C.H.E.R.U.B., we can save your honey butt from dying violently. " C.H.E.R.U.B. (R mark) "We never even ask a fee." "Because good people spread the love, "And we're here for all above. "We do the paperwork for you "And the heavy lifting too." (Female sheep is shown exhausted in a pile of paperwork and later shown lifting a boulder from a man.) Both sheep witness a dying man from a car accident and wipe the scene away. "So sit back and let us bless a soul... for you." (all three sing). "Oh we, are the C.H..."
Blitzo blows up the TV in anger.
Random names: The cherub is Blitzo's opposite, Millie and the female sheep and Moxxie and the male sheep.
Blitzo's name is German for lightning. Moxxie means aggressive energy. Millie means mild strength/industrious
Donner= German for thunder Jalen= peace Ardel = industrious
Theories based on the song: 1. Heaven has animal-like Zoophobia characters like Hell 2. C.H.E.R.U.B. saves lives while I.M.P. kills them, thus keeping the world in balance. 3. The cherub leader would be Blitzo's rival. Male sheep vs Moxxie, female sheep vs Millie 4. If I.M.P. had their way, everyone would be dead. If C.H.E.R.U.B. had their way, the earth would be overpopulated. 5. C.H.E.R.U.B. have access to Heaven and Earth. They probably use the Bible to access the living world. 6. C.H.E.R.U.B. would save anyone, even criminals. 7. C.H.E.R.U.B. might have another Loona counterpart. 8. Could I.M.P. and C.H.E.R.U.B. have access to all three realms?
Clip number four: Blitzo and Stolas talk in bed. Stolas goes under the covers and stares seductively at him. He gets the idea to take Blitzo to a Harvest Festival with him as a bodyguard. Blitzo gets suspicious, claiming he won't go if Stolas uses him for sex and his purposes. Soon, Blitzo decides to come along. Stolas then says "sorry about you leaving behind your clients," while Blitzo retorts "Oh fuck my clients!" Best line. Stolas' wife will not be happy when she hears of Stolas and Blitzo's relationship.
Stolas (smokes a cigarette): " It's shocking to it to be seen, Blitzy. My grimoire is incredibly vital. And it isn't supposed to be let out by little imps like yourself." He puts out his cigarette on Blitzo's horns and pinched his cheek. Blitzo sighs and shoves him off. Both appear to be topless.
Stolas: "The Harvest Moon is a very special occasion. It's been my annual duty to celebrate it in the Ring of Wrath. It's a charming little festival with games and music..."
Blitzo: "A wrath ring, huh? My employees are from there. Haven't really been, but it sounds like a place of imprints."
Stolas: "Oh! Why don't you all accompany me to the festival as our special guests?! I'll give you all... (goes under the covers and lies near Blitzo's privates. "...special access." (chuckles)
Blitzo: "Look I told you, we're not bodyguards, alright? It was a one time thing we did and guess what? We did it badly!"
Stolas stands up with the cover over his head.
Stolas: "I'm simply offering a fun work-free day of fun! I feel quite safe at the Harvest Festival. I go every year. Nothing has changed."
Blitzo: "Okay, look if you promise this is not some fuck-fest invite... it does sound like it could be fun. Alright, I'll run it by the others. It sounds like we can work without the book anyway."
Stolas: "I do hope to see you there. I'm sorry your clients will have to wait."
Blitzo: (waves his hand) "Oh fuck my clients!"
We are introduced to new characters: Loo-Loo the creepy apple mascot, the shy imp, owl princess Octavia, "Melodia" the queen, the CHERUB sheep and Robo-Fizz, a robotic jester demon colored black, yellow, white, and light pink-red. It can be assumed that he is red and black and dangerous in his true form. Could Hell's circus be one big conspiracy? Anything is possible in the inferno.
Thank you to all who supported Vivzie's charity and those who continue to show their love for the show and concern for what's going on in the world. Protests, Police, Pandemic, Personal Rights. I donated earlier and I do all I can to keep the fandom together, trying to tapper down the "shipping wars." I don't feel like a hero at all, but I feel good that I'm showing support.
My work is unknown in comparison to all the marvelous Charlastor fanfictions out there:
MuseValentine's "Smiling Man" Angelus19's "Taxidermist"
and many more.
Please don't forget to show support to Hazbin Madness and Radio Hazbin on YouTube. Some people may disagree with me on this, but I think those two voice actors and comic dubbers have better potential than Markapiler and JackdaSepticeye. Yes, the latter two may be famous and well-known, but in my opinion, only HalusaTwin and InSaiyans capture the uncasted Lucifer and Lilith so well. A king and queen of the fandom.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVkr2V_Y-sIzBH01AbPcufw
But don't fret. This fandom has given me ideas that keep skyrocketing through my head and into the world. I've made fanfictions since 2014 and have only made more after being exposed to DBZ and H.H. My long projects seem to take months to update but as long as I'm alive, inspired and have free time, I won't cease doing what I love. Indeed, Viv's words inspired me toward the end of the stream. She said to a person who donated a lot and the viewers to share their creativity with the world, as it can inspire others. Vivziepop is a role model for me, as are so many of my friends/content creators (artist Ady Laine, theorist BlueRaven666, musician Ashboyo, my close friend Sumera Paleema (DBZ artist) and many others.
Very soon, I'll be expanding upon my rewrites/remixes of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. Indeed, the future episodes may be closer than we think!
Stay safe out there and treat each other well.

BOOK REPORT 2020
I’ve always been a sparse reader but 2018 and 19 had me accelerate my reading habits to the point that I think I’ve read the most books this year that I ever had. I suppose I’ll count them all here, just to make sure!! I said something or other about the Moomin books at the end of last year’s Inkt*b*r so, this being the month of traditions, let’s make a new one by tallying up my literary “yays” and “nays” at the end of the season.
Video game text boxes don’t count, online publication articles don’t count, psych/aesthetic papers and 1000 page biosemiotic textbooks don’t count, but they have sure pursued me in my sleep during the year as well. This list is really mostly for my benefit (and no I won’t get a Goodreads account tyvm), so under the cut you’ll find a list of titles in roughly the order I read them, along with short notes. I’ve done longer reviews of these books elsewhere and I need not bore you with them here.
K. Stanislavski - An Actor Prepares (1936) I started reading this book in 2012, then dropped it because I couldn’t understand it at the time. Kostya attends acting school and gets lessons from The Director. He learns to sleep like his cat.
K. Stanislavski - Building a Character (1949) Supposed to have been published along the first one in a single volume. Kostya continues his lessons. A lot of thoughts on walking, gaits, eloquent speech, phrasing, etc. Both these books are wonderful looks into the author’s artistic life. It’s very heartfelt and down to earth, considering it’s quasi-fiction made to edutain. Very inspiring.
M. Polanyi - The Tacit Dimension (1966) A book on the origin of knowledge, the integrated performance of skills, the emergence of life and other phenomena in the universe, marginal control between levels of reality, the moral death of the communist regime caused by the unbridled lucidity of the Enlightenment, the responsibilities of science, and thoughts about open societies of the future. This is one of the two shortest books I’ve read in the list, it covers all of this under 130 pages and manages to do it well.
B. Rainov - Eros and Thanatos (1971) A communist propaganda book attacking western mass media and escapist culture. It gets no points for being correct, as the author mostly swiped the truths from french philosophers. Very variable in its intellectual prowess, almost as if it picks its arguments in order to push an agenda. Informative but also infuriating. Also expectedly homophobic.
J. Hoffmeyer - Signs of Meaning in the Universe (1997) A somewhat pop-sciency book about biosemiotics. Forgettable but also humbly written and explicative.
A. Noë - Varieties of Presence (2012) An unimpressive book about sensory perception. Noë’s theory on sensorimotor action is worth considering but the book is poorly edited and mostly spent arguing with peers.
E. Fudge - Quick Cattle & Dying Wishes (2018) A look into a registry of last wills and testaments from the period 1630 - 1650 in Essex. The book is about early modern people’s relationship to their animals and what they meant to them in life, as well as in death. Fudge’s argumentation is sharp and her style is modern. Being a scholarly book it is really overwhelming with the footnotes sometimes, but otherwise satisfying. One gets beautiful glimpses of family relationships, thoughts and feelings that people now dead for 400 years once held.
G. Márquez - One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) The Buendia family get all their sons killed. The Banana Company sucks. People love each other. A lot happens, generally. It is a hundred years, after all. The upper class sucks.
K. Polanyi - The Great Transformation (1944) The Industrial Revolution sucked. England sucks. It reduced all its workers to subhuman wretches. Every single decision made after the empiricists made labour and land fictional commodities has been a band-aid to the essential contradiction that the market economy wants to annihilate its human host. Laissez-faire sucks. It caused WW1. Fuck everything. Fun book.
R. Coyne - Peirce of Architects (2019) Talks about architecture and the ideas of logician/father of pragmatism Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914). Informative about both. Brisk and not very in-depth, but to its benefit rather than its detriment.
R. Williams - Culture and Society (1958) A survey of the 18th and 19th century England, and the emergence of the concept of “culture” as defence against the horrors that the Industrial Revolution inflicted upon society. Consists of some two dozen outlines of contributors to the romanticist tradition, from Adam Smith, through Ruskin, to Orwell, their beliefs, contributions and literary works. Very eloquent and interesting.
E. Fudge - Brutal Reasoning (2006) A fantastic book about much: early modern views of the difference between a human and an animal, the Christian discourse of reason, the logical fallacies that lead to its implosion, the advantageous use of dehumanisation by imperialists in other to genocide natives, Montague and Shakespeare, and the ethical hell of animal murder that led Descartes to deem animals as machines so as to allow his buddies to perform live vivisections on dogs without feeling guilty about it (this is the real reason, don’t let anybody tell you otherwise). There is even space for an entire chapter about an intelligent horse who could tell a virgin from a whore and learned Latin at Oxford. This is my favorite book I read this year, so it gets an extra long review.
R. Williams - The Long Revolution (1961) A sequel to Culture and Society that’s worse. The start and end are brilliant but the middle sags. It contains some historical reviews of English cultural elements, like the newspaper industry, the Standard English vernacular and the realist novel of the 19th century, but honestly if the book was just about about the creative state (intro) and Marxism (outro) it would’ve been fine, if not better.
P. Klee - The Thinking Eye (1956 & 1964) Bauhaus boy in 1920s Germany! Love you Klee, xoxo. You really have to read his thoughts to understand his work imho. You can appreciate it just fine on the surface level, but his completely eccentric (though very self-consistently logical and sharp) views on art creation open a new outlook into his primitive approach.
F D.K. Ching - Architecture: Form, Space & Order (1979) A staple book for architecture students. Or so I hear. Steeped in gestalt psychology. Very good, though not necessarily stuff I don’t know already. Very nice looking pencil illustrations, Ching looks to be an accomplished technical draughtsman.
H. Wölfflin - Principles of Art History (1915) A strong contender for second place in the tier list. The book examines the transition between Classical to Baroque in Italy and Germany (and all the Germany clones, like the Netherlands). It is a systematic, precise aesthetic treatise that reveals much by conceptualizing and grouping characteristic art features in which the two styles differ, then explaining their bearing on their decorative content as well as the outlook on life that they embody. Lovely.
M. Porter - Windows of the Soul: The Art of Physiognomy in European Culture 1470-1780 (2005) A historiographical treatise about early modern views on physiognomy. The book deals mainly with the extant literature on the subject and tries to gleam what it could mean for the customs at the time - palmistry reading, occultism, persecution of the “gypsies” and the Christian scientific project of attaining meaning. Macro- and microcosms, as above so below, hermeticism, that sort of stuff. It’s an interesting read but it’s too long, the quality of writing varies greatly from chapter to chapter, and it is far too expensive. Wouldn’t recommend it.
S. C.Figueiredo - Inventing Comics: A New Translation of Rodolphe Töpffer's Reflections on Graphic Storytelling, Media Rhetorics, & Aesthetic Practice (2017) This is the shortest book I read, mainly translating Töpffer’s 1845 "Essay on Physiognomy" along with giving his biography and some other paraphernalia. It’s not worth the price for the content contained within, but Töpffer is the father of the modern comic book, so I thought I’d learn what his philosophy was. On that front, at least, very interesting! If only I knew French I’d save myself the trouble and read the original, which is now public domain.
D. Bayles - Art & Fear (1985) A useless self-help book. Not entirely bullshit but completely banal from all angles. Shouldn’t even be on this list but I did read it, so...
I. Allende - The House of the Spirits (1982) A child rapist gets a redemption arc. Well, kind of. All women are queens. Men are awful. The poor are wretches and it’s their fault. Oh no, the communists are going to take our land! Pinochet’s concentration camps sucked. Overall a better magical realism book than 100 Years of Solitude, to be honest. Very well written characters.
R. Arnheim -To the Rescue of Art: Twenty-Six Essays (1992) What it says on the tin. Wide range of subjects, from art appreciation, to schizophrenic and autistic child art, to gestalt psychology, to philosophy of science, to Picasso’s Guernica and the fate of abstract art, to reflections on the 20th century and the writer’s life in pre-nazi Germany and America. I love Arnheim, I’ve read many of his books and I’m glad I picked this one up.
R. Arnheim - Film as Art (1957) A book about cinematography, one of his earliest, actually, mostly a personal translation from an original German book he published in 1933. Somewhat outdated, but foundational. Not as informative to me but I don’t regret reading it.
G. E. Lessing - Laocoon; or, On the Limits of Painting and Poetry (1766) A book by a greekaboo about a fucking dumb poem and a statue of a naked dad and his two sons getting fucked by snakes. It’s misogynistic and authoritarian in several places, and altogether awfully full of itself. 100 pages of interesting observations stretched over 400 pages of boring Greco-Roman literary discourse.
L. Tolstoy - Childhood, Boyhood, Youth (1852, 1854, 1856) One story serialized in a magazine then later collated in three separate books. Aristocrat boy grows up in pre-revolution Russia. A very, very relatable coming-of-age story. Tolstoy is a lovely writer.
F. Dostoevsky - Poor Folk (1846) An epistolary novel consisting of letters between literally Dobby from Harry Potter and his maybe-niece, whom he wants to fuck. Starts bad, gets better by the end. A bit rough and tumble for Dostoevsky’s first, so I forgive him for wasting my time a little bit. A decent character study of the middle/lower classes, at least.
L. Tolstoy - Family Happiness (1859) An amazing romance novel for the skill employed in writing it. It is very short yet delivers so much emotion. Rather simple narrative at its core, but executed with such bravado one cannot help but be impressed.
F. Dostoevsky - The Double (1846) In which the Author starts swinging. A pathetic, neurodivergent old man gets used and abused by the people around him and nobody cares. Satirical and biting, better than his first.
A. Lindgren - Pippi Longstocking (1945) I last read this when I was 6 years old so I thought I’d refresh my memory. I remember disliking the book then and I can see why. Pippi’s kind of an asshole. Still very enjoyable to read. I know it’s meant for a younger audience’s reading level yet I cannot help comparing it with Tove Jansson’s books and how much better the prose in there is. Sorry.
***
I think that about rounds them up! That’s about 30 books, give or take. For next year I’m hoping to:
Finish Tolstoy’s and Dostoevsky’s bibliographies
Read more econ and marxist writing (low personal priority but i have to, in THIS economy *rolls eyes*)
Finish the Tintin and Moomin comics, as well as Jhonen Vasquez’s collection of edgy humor
Read more about botany and biology in general
Get started on Faulkner’s and William Golding’s bibliographies
Read more children’s books
Search for more Latin American fiction from the Boom
Read more psych/aesthetics/pedagogy literature, which seems to have become my main area of interest
Thanks for sticking till the end of the list, hope you’ve learned something and maybe you’ll pick one of these up if it took your interest. I don’t have to be a philistine just because I’m drawing video game fanart! Bye now!

Is the reason the US didn't suffer as much from WW2 as other nations have to do with the fact they were two oceans away from where all the shit was going down or is there more to it than mere geography?
Its more than geography but that is a big factor, like Pearl Harbor was the largest death toll on American soil during the war (discounting our colonies which oh yeah we had). Like German had a few subs but what could they have done. LIke for the US, this was almost entirely an offensive war, we attacked the Germans in North Africa and France, and we attacked Japan in the pacific so that was a factor.
Another was that we weren’t really one of the main combatatns in the war at least inititally, the Pacific War was Japan’s attempt to conquer (i’m sorry “liberate”) China, whic hthe US had economic interest in but it wasn’t like..on our border. And German’s genocidal war to take over Europe was kinda distant to us too, until Pearl Harbor our only main reason to get involved was moral, and we completely failed on that front (Don’t even get me started about the isolationist movement in the 30s it pisses me off). But the United States just isn’t in the worse fighting until after 1941, its a war happening away from us.
The second major point is....the contribution question. God I hate this historical debate....basically lets be clear, the Soviet Union did the vast majority the killing and the dying against the Nazis. Somewhere like 30-40 million Soviets Die in WWII and 90% of all Nazi losses happen on the Eastern Front (though the Soviet Union like the US took their sweet time getting into the war but that is another story). So the worse of the fighting in Europe was not what the Americans were experiencing, like the Battle of the Bulge is a skirmish on the Eastern Front. However, the US still did a lot of fighting in the war and were necessary for the Soviets to win when they did, because there is more to war than just body counts, but we have to be honest, the war in North Africa and the Invasion of France are just not the same level of bloody as the fighting in the Ukraine.
Now the United States did do a lot of heavy fighting in the Pacific (fun fact, I have met actual Soviet Historians who didn’t know that the US entered the war only a few months after the Soviet Union because of Pearl Harbor), but the Japanese military was just...so utterly terrible at everything so while the United States suffered losses, the fight was so blatantly mismaged in America’s favor that losses weren’t...THAT...bad. Relatively speaking, the United States still losses hundreds of thousands of lives. And even then, the US joined the fight later so Japan was already bogged down in their losing war in China (Japan in WWII is just....ugg). And in the last two years of the War, the US just has such air superiority that they can reduce losses even more.
And in both Europe and the Pacific, the Fascists we were fighting had already...kinda burned out. Like the Best German troops aren’t in Normandy, they are in the Ukraine. The Best Japanese Troops...are already dead in Shanghai. We joined late so (especially with Germany) we are fighting the left overs, we don’t fight any of the powers when they are fresh.
Finally, the US’ greatest contribution to the war was not military (though again, did a lot there) it was in terms of stuff. The US had the best industry in the world, greatest capacity for military outputs, and served as the primary producing of....STUFF in the war. We made bullets, tanks, bombs, planes, guns, food, clothes, tents, boots, medicine, everything, America produced it. So any time we fought hte Fascists, whose industry was just a complete joke, the American solider has this massive advantage in just...stuff. The American soldier is better fed, unusually has a better gun, has more support, and often outnumbers their opponent. Especially against Japan, whose army wasn’t even given a field kit, it was pretty comical.
So I don’t want to say that the Untied States didn’t have to work to win, and a lot of Americans died and suffered, but the War is basically over for the Fascists once America enters the war. Which meant that when the war was over...the Untied States was the only major country whose civilian economy was still working fine, which is why from 1945 onwards the United States was the world superpower.
But yeah, it was mostly the fact that we were protected by two oceans =p. Good Question

*Cracks knuckles* Ow. Let's see, how about: A6, 16. B1, 12. C1, 2, 3, 5, 8. D4. E2, 3, 7. F2, 5, 10, 12 (Sorry, but also not sorry) I6. L1, 2, 4, and 9 :)
hoo boy that took a while
A6) Does your OC tend to assume their interpretation of events and reality is correct, or do they question it? I.e., “I’m sure that’s what you said” versus “It’s possible I misheard you.”
Ah, he questions himself a lot. Maybe he wasn’t listening well enough because he was too distracted by being anxious? Maybe he misinterpreted this event, because his background knowledge on it was lacking, he doesn’t know the full story and opinions from all sides, he’s not sure he can form a well educated opinion on this--
A16) Does your OC have to go through their own trials to learn a lesson, or do they listen and learn from observation and lecture? I.e., does your OC listen when someone tries to tell them the importance of budgeting, or do they have to go experience what happens if you don’t budget first?
Hector needs to do it himself for Science, because how else is he to truly know, if not from his own personal experience? Trusting what people tell you is good and all but gathering data yourself is better.
Unless we’re talking about raider politics, in which case there’s not really a good way for Hector to gather data without seriously endangering him and friends, so he’ll just listen to Gage.
B1) Do they believe you have to give respect to get it, or get respect to give it?
Generally, he believes it’s necessary to give people respect before you can expect it in return. He learns that many people do not in fact think the same way. He’ll still want to extend basic courtesy to them even if they’re assholes, unless they disrespect/piss him off to the extremes, or if their actions threaten his position and in turn the well-being of himself and friends.
B12) Your OC orders something to eat and gets their order done in a pretty wrong way, something they can’t just pick off or whatnot to correct, or something major is missing. What do they do?
Have a back and forth about it in his head – ah it’s not so bad it’s still fine, but then again he really wanted it differently… but he doesn’t wanna bother them and be entitled about it, but man… :( Might get close to pointing it out but chances are slim that he’ll actually get someone to correct the order. It’ll be disappointing but he’ll eat it.
C1) Does your OC have a moral code? If not, how do they base their actions? If so, where does it come from, and how seriously do they take it?
Eeeh, not a super strong one. His baseline are general societal morals and norms, like… help person good, kill person bad. Most of the time he’ll base his actions on what feels right for him and for his friends. He’ll consider: will doing this make me feel bad afterwards? Will it have a negative impact on other people, who don’t deserve it? Is that consequence worth it because it saves my own skin or helps/protects my friends?
C2) Would your OC feel bad if they acted against their morals? If not, would they find a way to excuse themselves for it?
Bringing back the point about sacrificing for the greater good. He’d consider that the morally right thing to do because it impacts fewer people negatively. But making that sacrifice endangers his friends, whose lives for him personally are worth much more than an abstract crowd of people. So he chooses to not do the thing for the greater good and save his friends instead, and yes, he would feel very bad on the one hand, because oh boy. As far as most people are concerned, he did a horrible terrible thing and was extremely selfish and absolutely chose wrong. But on the plus side, and that’s a very big huge plus- he still has his friends. And still having his friends makes him feel less bad than how he would have felt if he didn’t have his friends anymore.
So uh… yes and no.
C3) Is it important for them to be with people (socially, intimately, whatever) whose major ideological tenets align with their own?
More or less. He can’t hang out well with people he completely disagrees with in every way, of course that’s not going to work. But Hector is… how to say… kinda boring when it comes to ideals and opinions and all that stuff. He just doesn’t have very strong ones in general. Which can make him a little bland and potentially spineless, but also pretty agreeable. As long as they don’t constantly shove their great big opinions in his face, they’ll get along well enough.
C5) Do your OC’s morals and rules of common decency go out the window when it comes to those they don’t like, or when it’s inconvenient? Aka, are their morals situational?
I think I kind of answered this in C2. Basic morals do get thrown out the window if friends are threatened, or if he gets pissed off enough. He’d have to be really pissed off though. As well as being post having-grown-a-spine(-at-least-partially). Hurting people bad but being insufferable to Hector also bad so guess what fucker
C8) Is your OC more practical or ideal morally? I.e., do they hold people to high expectations of behavior even if it’s not realistic for the situation, or do they have a more realistic approach and adapt their morality to be more practical?
Again a little tricky because I’m having trouble coming up with a scenario that would help me make up my mind with a definite answer. I’m leaning more towards a practical approach 1) because Hector is more of a realist/pessimist in general, 2) he doesn’t want to like… be overly demanding
D4) Would they like to be immortal? Why, why not? If they are immortal, would they rather not be?
The more he thinks about it the more meaningless life seems to get for someone like him. Solution: don’t think about it! Repress that shit because it’s not like you can do anything about it anyway. Also an involuntary solution but one that helps nonetheless: have shit memory so that you don’t feel like you’ve lived too many lifetimes.
If you were to ask him, the answer you get completely depends on the headspace he’s in at the moment. If he’s just vibing, going about his day and things are going well then yeah! Immortality isn’t so bad. If you catch him on an off day, things aren’t going so well, maybe he just thought about having to deal with losing his friends eventually… then you obviously get the opposite answer.
E2) Which of the nine types of intelligence is your OC strongest in? Weakest? (Linguistic, existential, naturalist, et cetera)
I know I talked about this before and I grouped them from strong to medium to weak but I can’t for the life of me find the post anymore (thanks tumblr for your useless garbage search and tagging features). So I can’t even check if I’m still on the same wavelength with past me :v
From strongest to weakest we have…
Logical-mathematical
Spatial
Linguistic
Bodily-kinesthetic
Musical
Naturalist
Interpersonal
Existential
Intrapersonal
E3) How many languages do they speak?
Three… and a half.
The half language being Swiss German, because I don’t know what the fuck it is even after graduating from language uni
The others: Standard German, English, and French, from strongest to weakest.
E7) Are they a good note-taker? Are they a good test-taker? Do exams make them nervous?
Yes, yes, and yes. He’s very good at taking notes considering most of science is documentation. And even now when he’s not doing a lot of Formal Science things, he still writes in his journal almost daily, summing up events and making notes of important things. He gets nervous with tests with all the self doubt if he really prepared well enough and the unpredictability of the questions that will be asked, but once the pen is in his hand, he just blazes through it.
F2) What’s their ideal home look like? Where is it?
Someplace underground, safe and sturdy like a vault. Industrial aesthetic is welcome and he wants to have plenty of space, but it shouldn’t feel huge and empty. Needs to be homey, even if it might feel a little rustic to the average person. Having it built into a mountain would be sick, so he still has the perfect protection from the sun, but he doesn’t have to crawl out of a hole in the ground like some kind of worm – instead he opens the door and gets the most amazing view immediately.
… and I promise, only after writing the above did I remember that he pretty much lives in a mountain already, just a plastic one. Close enough.
F5) How handy are they? Can they fix appliances, cars, cabinets, et cetera?
Quite handy indeed. He can fix most things, he usually just needs some time to (re-)familiarize himself with the object and its functions. A lot of it also involves trial and error, but he’ll figure it out eventually.
F10) Do they engage in any of the arts? How good do you intend them to be? Would they agree they are?
He’d actually be really good at pen/pencil drawing, what with making technical illustrations and blueprints of Science Stuff, but it’s not a skill that’s applied in an artsy setting. When the goal is to draw for the sake of drawing, evoking emotion, or paint with a brush, that’s probably when shit would fall apart. I can’t remember who the artist was, but it reminds me of this little comic about Paladin Danse – in which he’s extremely good at technical drawings but then he attempts to draw a dog and it just looks…wrong.
Now with music, he’s more likely to engage in it in an artful way. He likes to sing, even if he very rarely does it now that he has people around him more often than not. Before, he’d just be alone in his lonely place and sing and scream to his heart’s content, but now he’s too awkward to do it, because someone might hear him. He is pretty good at it though, considering how much alone time he’s had to practice.
F12) Would they enjoy a theme park?
The rides and junk food? Yes absolutely. But the giant crowd and every little consequence it entails, nope, no thank you, he’ll just leave it be.
You bet he’s gonna go on the rides at nuka world though once they got them back up and working, because the crowd isn’t as big as pre-war and he’s the fucking overboss and can skip lines and restrict access to others however he damn pleases.
I6) Could they eat the same thing they enjoy over and over and not get bored of it quickly?
He can, but that doesn’t mean he enjoys it. The first month or so at nuka world he almost exclusively lives off of some shitty nutrient bars. In some scenarios, food just exists as sustenance and not as something to be enjoyed.
In a preferable scenario though, it is to be enjoyed. And I think while he would get bored of it after a while, it’d take longer than for the average person. And even then, he’s just happy he can eat something enjoyable at whatever pace he likes instead of having to scarf down Compressed Nutrient
L1) How have your characters changed since you created them?
He stopped existing in a void, which is a pretty damn big change. Now he has a whole world and other characters to interact with, that contribute to shaping and developing his personality.
L2) What do you consider the biggest themes in your character, if any?
Oof, this is hard. Maybe… getting to know yourself? Accepting change, personal growth?
L4) Would you hang out with your OC if you could?
I’m actually not sure sjdfsdnsv
Like yes he is sweet bean who must be protected, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is a weird little old man. I guess if we can just chill listening to music and he can go off about crustaceans or something and we speak The Horrible Language, why the fuck not
L9) How did you come up with your OC?
Masks cool. Me especially like gas masks. Unhinged science characters also cool. Make generic but still sliiiightly unique design and make it a point to not have him be a young pretty boy character despite having immortality. Add lots of weaknesses to compensate for the immortality. Add science personality things and complete the picture with projections of my own personality. Boom, you’ve got yourself the beginnings of a Hector

30 days of WITCHversary
Day 11 - Something awesome
Okay, a big PRAISE to the German dub on this one. As some of my followers, who read all my extra long tags, already know – yes, I’m from Germany and therefore watched W.i.t.c.h. in German. And this is actually the good thing about it – non-english speaking countries (that have enough money to spend on film industry) put a LOT effort in dubbing movies and tv shows. Germany is one of those countries. As far as I know the two European countries whose film/movie dubs are know as the best are Italy and Germany and it SHOWS.
Because I am a language nerd, I often do switch languages on my DVDs for fun and tbh when it comes to the guardian’s voices in the English dub of W.i.t.c.h. I was like SO disappointed? Like, a lot of changes (Taranee speaking with Cornelia’s voice at times etc.) and also pretty lame acting? I remember Taranee having an eel in her shirt in episode 3 and the English voice actress did..not deliver at all? While Marie-Luise Schramm, who voices Taranee in the German dub, is like F*CK THERE IS SOMETHING HELP ME AHHHHHH. But actually she is like that the whole time, she has got sm Taranee spirit it’s awesome. Also, Blunk’s German voice was so funny and CUTE while the english one was simply..funny? But idk the german voice feels sm more in character same with Caleb who sounds like a 12 years old in the English sub xD. So enough bitching about the English sub who has it’s good things too (like phobos and Cedric are awsome in there!)
So, long story short – I love the German dub sm! (I also love some other dubs and maybe will do a post about other good dubs too at some point). So while I will save our two evil bad boys for a later day, I’m gonna list up the 5 guardians with their voice actresses now and tell you why they are so good (and I bet now everyone stops reading lol.)
Will: Magdalena Turba
Okay, let’s start with a voice I am nearly always annoyed of because I first noticed her as Will and she therefore stays Will to me. As I said before, I am by far no fan of show! Will and I think things would have been better if Will had a cuter voice in the German dub? But on the other hand Magdalena’s voice is very fitting: she is confident and strong and also catches Will’s bossy moments very well.
Memorable roles: She is also the German voice actress of Amanda Seyfried and I still connect my childhood with Magdalena because she voiced Cera in the A Land Before Time movies (BEST CHILDHOOD MOVIES EVER FIGHT ME).
Irma: Esra Vural
She was sm Irma it is not even healthy anymore xD I once read an interview with Esra in which she said how much she enjoyed voicing Irma and you really FEEL that when you hear her. She got all the emotions so right as if she really was the character herself.
Memorable roles: Another very Irma-like character she voices was Clawdeen Wolf from MH. She is also the German voice actress of Ashley Tisdale. (And now compare a Sharpay Evans to Irma Lair – NO similarities and still she got both characters on point!).
Taranee: Marie-Luise Schramm
Oh, my baby! She makes Taranee such a cute sweetheart. She really catches Taranee’s nervous personality in all the little scenes so well. I think I am more a fan of her acting frightened than the brainy part because the first one makes Taranee sm human if that makes sense? She has got her flaws and still keeps on fighting. And Marie-Luise catches those emotions very well imo.
Memorable roles: Toph Bei Fong from Avatar (also MY GIRL) but she does sm stuff
Cornelia: Anna Predleus
Now, while Cornelia has got a mature voice in almost EVERY dub, the German dub was like: Hell no? She’s the shopping girl? She’s blonde? She needs a high voice. But..it works? Like people complain that Cornelia was too much of a bitch in the show, agreed but she still has got a brain and is still very mature and smart? I mean being a shopping girl doesn’t automatically make you dump. I guess they made Cornelia that way in the show because she was pretty unlikeable in the comics – especially in the first issues. So in the show she might have been bitchy but at least she still was FUN lol. So that is why I like Anna’s voice as Cornelia, yes it is no deep voice but it still fits the character in a different way. I also really liked her acting when it came to Elyon’s situation.
Memorable roles: Especially from my childhood: Gemini Stone from Sabrina – The animated series and Gina Lash from Angela Anaconda xD
Hay Lin: Carmen Katt
Now, she is the only one which I only connect with Hay Lin. Her voice was pretty high and “airy” but still might seem more mature than in other dubs. She really got the weird character of Hay Lin very well and I really like how she feld inside the character if that makes sense? Like, Hay Lin always got that little side-kick quotes and Carmen wasn’t simply reading them out but putting a lot Hay Lin spirit and it - is a bit like in Irma’s case – she really WAS Hay Lin. Like, she was the whole person, all emotions all states Hay Lin went through were on point. Be it her being very enthusiastic about being a guardian, or doing her art stuff or being hopeless in s2 when Yan Lin becomes brainwashed by Nerissa. I love her sm, my little baby girl. (Yes, I LOVE HAY LIN WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT).
Memorable roles: I just looked her up and was like WTF she voiced Cleo de Nile (fhjdjsjlskl) from MH and RIAS GREMORY IN HIGHSCHOOL DXD xD and also Raven Queen in Ever After High. Lol, this women has got talent.
And last but not least I want to talk about ELYON
Elyon: Julia Meynen
Omg, she was SO on POINT. I know, I said that before but Julia as Elyon OMG. I really LOVE how she got the emotions of the lost and angry Elyon in episode 01.14 Parent’s Night. Like, she can go from super friendly and cutesy to absolute terrifying mad like she is in 01.23 when confronting the guardians. She plays Elyon from the nice bf of Cornelia to the brainwashed princess and Julia played is so believable. Again, I use the word emotions here a lot, but Julia’s job as Elyon really gives me goose bumps.
Memorable roles: As for my childhood I’d put here Honoka Yukishiro from Pretty Cure and Sunburst from Barbie: Magic of the Rainbow and also Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Of course ALL voice actors if W.i.t.c.h. are GREAT and I will come back to this topic on day 19 xD
And now, everyone who read till here but a heart in the comments xD

Starshine Ch. 63 Jimmy Page Fan Fiction
The evening show was about to begin and Jill was backstage with Jimmy and the rest of the band. Jimmy had his costume on and they had all been tended to
by the hair and makeup crew. He was kissing Jill, just before stage call and telling her she’d be on his mind throughout the show. Jill told him how stunning he looked and that she couldn’t wait to be alone with him later. So the call arrived and they were introduced. And the four guys took the stage. Security escorted Clare and Jill to the usual place they occupied during any show. Just to Jimmy’s left. Jimmy loved having the two of them there. He was not ashamed to admit he got nervous and a bit of stage fright normally, when about to take the stage. But seeing Jill and Clare just feet away, beside him, it just gave him that extra boost of comfort and confidence. That made a hell of a difference for him. And once he began performing, all the nerves were gone, he was in his own world, own state of intense thinking. Solid and strong. They began with Rock n Roll, and the crowd was in ecstacy. The applause and cheering was phenomenally loud this night. The German audience just adored them. Jill was so proud of Jimmy. His skills were incredible, his on the spot timing and solos were impeccable. Jill and Clare were just in awe. And Bonz just blew doors with his driving force. Clare just loved him to a fault. Father of her child. Such a strong and fantastic guy, in every category. The next song they played was In The Light. Jill’s favorite song. Jimmy looked over at her as he played, and mouthed the words, “For you.” to Jill. She absolutely loved it and it touched her deeply that Jimmy knew how she loved it and played it just for her. Sitting there at the stage edge was such a prime privilege. The ladies felt so spoiled to receive such awesome treatment. Stagehands often brought them drinks, with a smile. Highly pampered VIP’s they were. As the first half ended, intermission time began. Jimmy handed his Les Paul #1 over to Tim, his assistant. He walked directly to Jill and pulled her right into his arms and kissed her with passion. Bonz also headed directly for Clare and they hugged like mad. They all walked backstage for a nice cold drink. Jimmy was sweating profusely and a stage guy gave him a fluffy white towel to dry off with. He had his other arm firmly around Jill’s waist and they sat on a bench together. Jimmy rested his elbows on his knees and held his head down awhile to catch his breath and get calm. Jill rubbed his shoulders and his gorgeous back. He loved that. Her affection and attention meant a lot to him. Gave him some peace and also he felt her love right through her hands into his body. They were both handed ice cold drinks and it was so refreshing. Jimmy was on a high still from the performance. His ears were ringing and he leaned against Jill for a few moments, as she held his head and kissed his red lips several times. He spoke softly to her, “My love, it’s fantastic having you here with me. Staying by me, helping me, loving me. I feel really cared for in your hands and it makes a big difference in my night.”
Jill replied, “Oh, wow. I’m thrilled to be here with you, darling. You’re everything to me and I’m so proud of you. Being brave enough to step out there, and playing so beautifully. It sounds unbelievable when you play.” He had the hugest smile on while she spoke, and he whispered against her ear, “I love you so much.”
Soon it was time for the next half and the group re entered the stage. It began with the acoustic set, with Travellin Riverside Blues.
So intricate and wonderful. Then Braun yr aur Stomp. Just mind blowing. After
the end of the show, Jill went into the little dressing room with Jimmy and helped him get the sweaty costume off. He was dripping sweat, hair soaking. He got a great hot shower, and Jill helped him get into his day clothes. He was blown out exhausted. But there was an after concert party that night in the big meeting room at their hotel later and he was expected to attend. So off they drove to the hotel in the limo, the entire bunch of them. Not much chatting took place, they were all drained. They got about an hour before the party to rest and breathe a bit. So Jimmy laid down for a little rest with Jill before the party, in their room. They had the light off and a fire crackling in the fireplace, and Jill just massaged his head, right by his temples and along his hairline. While she hummed softly next to him and cuddled him. He just lay there loving it, eyes closed, absorbing her love and warmth. And he drifted off sweetly within just a few minutes. She kept caressing him. In an hour, she gently spoke to him, it was time to go.
Jim : No, I can’t. I need another 10 minutes to rest. Maybe 15 honey.
Jill : Anything you say.
And she gently kissed his mouth a few times, and he smiled. He slept softly maybe another half hour, but then they really needed to go.
They got up and out and onto the elevator to the main floor. He was still a little out of it, but when they entered the party, all the loud music and lights and craziness helped Jimmy pull himself back to life again.
Most of the guests there were members of the music industry. Producers, other musicians, agents, lighting and sound engineers, record company directors and employees, sound technicians. They all knew or heard of Jimmy and most all of them wished for a little of his time. He was surrounded much of the evening by people grasping for his attention. Jill just kept back, standing with Clare, enjoying her company. They always had lots to chat about. Jill felt way lucky to have Clare with her at most events. They really supported each other. She felt sorry for Jim though. Jill knew he wasn’t much of a big talker. And when he was put on the spot to answer questions, especially just after a riveting performance, it was far from comfortable for him. She wished she could assist him, but that was way out of her realm. He had to handle all that on his own, to his displeasure. It was one of the most difficult aspects of his career. For Robert, it was no problem. Being out going and comical was a quality that helped him in situations such as this. But Jimmy was way quieter and less out going in public. He kept his thoughts to himself and possessed a mysterious aura. Therefore it was even more of a reason that folks in the business desired a quote or a conversation with him. But words often evaded him. Made him feel awkward.
Jill observed from the sidelines, Jimmy floundering in the sea of people waiting to chat with him. She saw how uncomfortable he was appearing. So she decided that she needed to go drag him away somehow. It wasn’t like it was mandatory for him to answer everyone’s questions. Even the president didn’t have to do that. And if he had answered hundreds of people’s inquiries, there would still always be dozens more, always looking for something more from him. It would never end. The demand wasn’t going to slow down anytime soon. So she made her way through the crowd and took Jimmy by the arm and said, “Sorry guys, Jimmy needs some air now, ok ?” He was glad to follow. She pulled him along with her to a little open space and found a few seats they could breathe in for awhile. He was so grateful, getting away from the demand.
Jim : Oh my God, fresh air. So beautiful. I love air.
Jill : Yes, I’m sure you do. Sorry I pulled you away. You just looked so overwhelmed and I was worried that you couldn’t breathe. You’re just so accommodating to everyone. I thought I would give you an out.
Jim : No, don’t apologize. I was surrounded and couldn’t see a way to get loose. To squeeze through and away. Without being completely rude. So you did me a service there. I love air.
Jill : Let’s get you a cold drink, my sweet angel.
She stepped away and told a stagehand there that they needed 2 cold beers and could he help them. He was glad to. So in a few minutes, they had their cold drinks and relaxed at a table in the back for awhile. Jill smoothed his hair back and out of his face. She massaged his head and his damp neck and he luxuriated in her soothing touch. He said, “ Jill, you are so loving and tender to me. The comfort you give me is invaluable. I’m by far more happy with you with me than I ever was on tour, before I met you, my love.”
Just at that moment, a woman stepped up close to them as they were seated, and put her arms around Jimmy’s neck and leaned down to kiss him. She was putting her lips against Jimmy’s face and he was grabbing at her arms to push her away. Jill took a hard look at her, and realized it was Leeza again. Jimmy said to her, “Leeza ? How did you get in here ? You’re relentless. I would really prefer that you keep your hands and mouth off of me. Will you be leaving on your own, or does security need to come get you again ?”
Leeza : Why ? Why do I have to leave ? I haven’t done anything wrong.
Jim : Well, you broke into my hotel room yesterday, you remember doing that don’t you ? That was kinda wrong. And you have a huge problem with taking no for an answer still. You just had your arms around my neck and your mouth on me, you see that my fiancé is right here next to me. That’s not exactly polite to either one of us. And it’s not really keeping your hands to yourself, is it ?
Leeza : Well, …. I haven’t heard you say that you don’t love me, so I guess I thought I was welcome.
Jim : Leeza, I don’t love you, I never loved you. You need to go now.
Soon, a security guy saw what was happening and he and a coworker took Leeza gently by the arms and had her removed.
Jimmy looked over at Jill, and he saw that she was ok about it. Jill saw how calmly he was handling it and thought she should stay calm, as well. Jim just put his hand behind Jill’s head and ruffled her hair up a bit. It was a way of saying he was proud of her. And Jill just smiled at him and he hugged her tightly.
Jimmy looked ok, but he told Jill he needed to get out of there, he was fading fast. So they said goodnight to the other bandmembers and exited. It had been a hell of a long day.
They took the elevator up to their floor and got into their room. They turned most all the lights off and went into their cozy room. Jill helped Jimmy get his clothes off and helped him under the covers. He was so tired he could barely stand. She covered him up with the blankets and kissed him all over the side of his face as he was on his side. He was whispering illegibly to Jill, something to the effect of, sweet angel, I love you, baby. And that was it for him. He had fallen asleep. Breathing softly. Jill went in the bath and took a nice shower, then got a cotton nightgown on. She laid down next to him, got under the covers and fell asleep with her head against his shoulder.
