You're really great
Found this site that has a bunch of funny quotes in it that you can easy copy paste so I dumped a ton into a text file. Here you go
Compass: I was going to suggest we do Marilyn Monroe and JFK roleplay, but I’d get way too into it. Alice: What- how? Compass: You’d be like “come to bed … Mr. President” and I’d be like, “I need to increase the amount of American military advisors in South Vietnam by a factor of 18.”
Alice: Well, Compass and I finally did it! The rest of the squad: gasps, shocked expressions, etc. Alice: That's right… We kissed!
Alice: I don't need to go to bed. I'm not tired, I'll be fine. Compass: But, darling, I'll be so lonely without you. Come curl up in my arms so I can feel whole again. Alice: O-oh. Well. Are you trying to seduce me into healthy sleeping patterns?? Compass: Is it working?
Jamie: Is something burning? Breeze, leaning seductively on the counter: Just my desire for you. Jamie: Alice, the toaster is literally on fire.
Compass: We should get you to a doctor for a check up immediately. What if it happens again, and there isn’t anyone around to help you? What if it’s congenital? Oh my God! Was it me? Did I hurt you? Alice: …You realize any other person that made their partner pass out on bed would simply feel really proud of themselves, right?
Jamie: I am the left brain, I am the left brain. "I work really hard until my inevitable death" brain. You've got a job to do, you better do it right and the right way is with the left brain's might. Breeze: I LIKE OREOS AND PUSSY-
Compass: What are you in the mood for? Alice: World domination. Compass: That's a bit ambitious. Alice: You are my world. Compass: Aww… Alice: Compass: Alice: Compass: OH.
Compass: As top in this relationship, I think we should- Alice: I can't believe you're pulling rank on me.
Compass, dashing into the room: WHY AREN’T THE DISHES IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER?! Alice: …What does that even mean?!
Compass: I ran into Alice in the kitchen at 1 AM last night and when I asked them what they were doing, they just shrugged, said “these are my roaming hours,” and wandered off, strumming vaguely on their guitar.
Compass: We need a plan to beat them. Alice: Okay, listen up. First, we fill their shoes with wet cat food. Compass: Alice: Judge me all you want, I get results.
Breeze: If bees can be fish and boys can be girls, then why can't my dad love me? Jamie: I thought I was going to have to yell at you, but now I think I should hug you.
Breeze: I committed all 7 deadly sins in 30 minutes. Jamie: Wow, I've gotta hear this. Breeze: I was angry and envious of my neighbor so I lazily seduced his wife and ate all his groceries and didn't share. Jamie: You forgot pride. Breeze: No, I'm pretty proud of this.
Breeze: We have fun, don’t we, Jamie? Jamie: I have never been more stressed out in my entire life.
Breeze, throwing their head into Jamie's lap: Tell me I'm pretty! Jamie, lovingly stroking their hair: You're pretty fucking annoying, that's what you are.
Breeze: If you don't stop talking, I'm going to jump out of that window. Jamie: …We're on the ground floor. Breeze: I know but I want a dramatic exit.
Jamie: Breeze, are you drinking… drinking hydrogen peroxide?! Breeze: It says H2O2! That means it’s the sequel to water!
Breeze: Get in, loser, we’re committing vehicular manslaughter!
Breeze: The only straight I am is a straight-up badass.
Alice: I have yet to encounter a problem where a sword didn't factor into the solution at least in some way.
Alice: I’ve been described as a ‘heartless villain’ and a 'little shit’, but I prefer… 'has alternative ways of having fun’.
Compass, seeing a banana on the car seat: What the FUCK?? Compass, buckling the banana up: Fucking buckle UP, it’s the LAW!
Alice/Breeze: People always shoot down my ideas and I’m sick of it. Two sentences in and everyone’s always shouting “what the fuck? that’s illegal!” and “you can’t do that!”. Like, c'mon, let me talk!
Breeze: I have a philosophy in life; if the seat is open, the job is open. That’s how I came to briefly drive a Formula 1 car.
Jamie: A stake to the heart won't kill a vampire if their tits are big enough. Compass: Yeah, you just catch it. Breeze: Nah nah nah, deflects it. Stake? Just bounces right off. Done. Back to doing hot girl shit. Alice: Then I just use a spear instead. Jamie: You are trying so hard to kill a vampire with big bazongas, and for what? Why would you do that to the ecosystem?
Jamie: Go on, give Breeze a compliment. Compass: How do you expect me to do that? Alice: Just say something that you wish someone would say to you. Compass: Uhh… You are now unbanned from Free Ham Sandwich Day! Breeze, sobbing: Nobody’s ever said that to me before!
Alice: Subs are so fun to play with. All you have to do is hint at what you might do, back them into a corner with a look, or grab their wrist in a certain way and they're a wide-eyed mess. Breeze: What the fuck kind of Subway are you going to? Compass: Substitute teachers deal with so much shit. Jamie: Guys.
Compass: You were stabbed. Do you remember anything? Jamie: Only the ambulance ride to the hospital. Compass: That wasn't an ambulance, I drove you. Jamie: But I heard a siren. Alice: That was Breeze. Breeze: Sorry, I got nervous.
Alice, gesturing to Compass: Breeze, look what you did! You made Mom upset! Jamie: Mom, please don’t cry, we’re sorry! Breeze: I’m sorry Mom… :( Compass, near tears: I DON’T REMEMBER GIVING BIRTH TO ANY OF YOU!
Compass: You’re just being paranoid. Again. Alice: When have I been paranoid? Compass: Um, when you first met Jamie you thought they were an undercover cop…? Alice: No one has a wart that big, I thought it was a surveillance camera! Compass: And last year you were sure Breeze was a mermaid! Alice: They hate wearing shirts! COINCIDENCE?! Later, when Alice’s theory is proven wrong Compass: Do you have anything to say for yourself? Alice: I still think Breeze is a mermaid.
Jamie: Small creatures are much more vicious because they have a smaller body to bottle up all their emotions. Breeze: Ridiculous. Give me some examples. Compass: Wasps? Alice: Terriers? Jamie: Alice.
Jamie: Who wants to go out of the country on a road trip? Alice: Yea, I could drink legally! Compass: I could hang out with the boys! Breeze: I could hide from the consequences of my actions.
Jamie: Why are your tongues purple? Alice: We had slushies. I had a blue one. Breeze: I had a red one. Jamie: oh. Jamie: Jamie: OH. Compass: Compass: You drank eachothers slushies?
Compass: Why did you guys dress up as each other for Halloween? Alice: Rose is the scariest thing I could think of! Rose: Alice told me I should pick the dumbest costume possible.
Compass: Where are you going? Alice: To get MYSELF a gift cause somebody didn't get me one! Compass: I told you I did! Its coming here on Friday! Rose, knowing full well that Compass got Alice an engagement ring: eating popcorn
Alice: Why is everyone so obsessed with top or bottom? Honestly, I’d just be excited to have a bunk bed.
Rose: How do you tell someone that you wanna have sex with them in a polite way? Compass: Excuse me Mx. Would you give me the honours of indulging in sexual activities with you? Alice: What the fuck is wrong with you two?
Compass, Entering Rose's room: Alice did it again. Rose: Peace disturbance? Compass: What no- Rose: Arson..? Compass: NO, JESUS CHRIST, HOW MANY- Rose: uh….Attempted murder? Compass: NO, THEY ATE ALL THE FOOD IN THE FRIDGE, BUT WHAT THE FU-
Compass: So… who's the big spoon and who's the little spoon? Alice: We're chopsticks! Compass: Well… that's cute! Compass: Does that mean you two snuggle together perfectly? Rose: No, it means that if you take the other away, the only thing the other is good for is stabbing.
Rose: So… I’ve seen you’ve been spending a lot of time with Compass recently. Alice: No, Rose, it's not what it looks like, I swear. Rose: Oh really? So no reason for me to be jealous? Alice: No! You’re the only one for me. Rose: Is that so? Alice: I promise! Compass and I are just dating, okay? They’re my partner. Rose: So there are no best-friends-feelings involved? Alice: You are still my one and only best friend! They’re just the love of my life, nothing more! Rose: But I’m still the platonic love of your life, right? Alice: Of course bro! Rose: Bro… Compass: What the-
Alice: Due to personal reasons, I will be fucking sinking to the bottom of the ocean in a large metal box. Compass: Did Rose say 'I love you' and you said 'Thanks'? Alice: THE REASONS ARE PERSONAL–
Compass: I like your top, Rose! Alice: I have a name, you know. Rose: sighs Why. Why are you like this.
Rose: Is letting someone win at chess sapiosexual bottoming? Alice: Can everyone in this godforsaken group please learn the skill called "Think Before You Speak"? Compass: Ya know… it might be.
Rose: What have you done with Alice? Compass: Nothing. Why, do you think I should?
The gang is about to do something dangerous Compass: Shouldn’t someone give a pep talk? Rose: Go ahead. Compass: Be careful. Compass: Don’t die. Alice: Holds back a laugh Rose: Great. We’re all bloody inspired.
Rose: So, what is Compass to you? Alice: The reason I wake up every morning. Rose: …That’s adorable. Compass earlier that morning, barging into Alice′s room, smacking pans together: WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP!!!
Compass: H-how do you ask someone out? Alice: Well, first- Rose: Don't ask them, they asked me out in a McDonalds parking lot. Compass: …And you said yes?
Compass: Rose, what does IDK, ILY, and TTYL mean? Rose: I don’t know, I love you, talk to you later. Compass: Alright, I love you too, I'll ask Alice. Rose: Wait- Compass, no-
Alice, at an awards show: Well, first of all, I’d like to thank Rose, the love of my life, for telling me Compass was going to win so don’t bother to prepare a speech.
Alice: What are you two arguing about this time? Rose: They’re always using common phrases incorrectly! Compass: Cry me a table, Rose.
Alice: I didn't drink that much last night. Compass: You were flirting with Rose. Alice: So what? They're my partner. Compass: You asked if they were single. Compass: And then you cried when they said they weren't.
Rose: Alice you can’t move in with Compass. Alice: Why not? Rose: Well, um, how are you going to feel when they see you without any makeup? Alice: I’m not wearing makeup right now. Rose: Holy crap, you’re beautiful.
Compass: So, what’s Alice's type? Rose: Brown eyes, kind, oblivious, good sense of humor, turtle lover. Compass: Sounds kind of like me. Too bad we’re just friends. Rose: Did I mention oblivious? Compass: Yeah, why? Rose: Okay, just making sure.
Jamie: Yesterday, I overheard Alice saying “Are you sure this is a good idea?” and Breeze replying “Trust me,” and I have never moved from one room to another so quickly in my life.
Alice: If you want my advice- Rose: No offense but you’re the last person I want relationship advice from. You tried to kill your significant other. Multiple times. Alice: First off, that was before we started dating. Secondly, they’ve also tried to kill me. Compass: It’s true. It was mutually attempted murder.
Compass: Alice- Alice: sighs Rose used to call me Alice… Compass: …Because it's your fucking name.

30 (Technically 34) Albums We Loved That Happened To Come Out in 2020
Tumblr media
So much has already been said and written about this cursed past year, but a few good things came out of it, including the music. Album-wise, like many before it and many to come, it was an embarrassment of riches. But even with so much time on our hands to devour new tunes, it was often old favorites, songs of comfort or familiarity that garnered the heaviest rotation. For many artists, too, it was a year ripe for revisiting or reissues of old material, looking at existing songs with fresh and new perspectives. Simply put, with so much to listen to, new and old, the prospect of ranking a finite number of albums felt not only daunting, but frankly a bit stupid. Maybe we were late to the game, but 2020 taught us that music should and can be appreciated in multiple contexts, not limited to but including when it first came out and when it was heard again and again, even if years later. The records below--listed in alphabetical order--happened to be released in some form in 2020, whether never-before-heard or heard before but in a different format. And the only thing I know is that we’ll be listening to them in 2021 and beyond.

Autechre - SIGN & PLUS (Warp)
The legendary British electronic music duo surprise released SIGN a mere month and a half after its announcement and then PLUS 12 days later. The former was a beatific collection of soundscapes that belied the band’s usual harsh noise, while PLUS embraced that noise right back, drawing you in with the clattering chaotic burbles of opener “DekDre Scap B” and lurching forward. -Jordan Mainzer

Against All Logic - 2017-2019 (Other People)
The perennially chill ambient house artist Nicolas Jaar had a busy 2020, as usual, releasing two albums under his name, Cenizas and Telas. But it was 2017-2019, the follow-up to the debut album from his Against All Logic moniker, that came first and throughout the year helped to illustrate Jaar’s penchant for combining inspired samples with club beats and tape hiss. Take the way the lovelorn vocals of “Fantasy” or soulful coos of “If Loving You Is Wrong” war skittering, scratchy percussion and cool arpeggios, respectively: Jaar is coming into his own as a masterful producer almost a decade after he released his first full-length. Oh, and bonus points for including none other than Lydia Lunch on a banger so blunt it would make Death Grips blush. - JM

Bartees Strange - Live Forever (Memory Music)
Like many, my introduction to Bartees Strange was through Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, his EP of The National covers. Creativity and shifting perspectives shine through each song’s reimaging, like flipping the coarse, almost manic “Mr. November” into something softer, more meditative. It felt like a mere peek into what was to come on Live Forever. Bartees Strange is a world-builder. Each track on his debut unfolds and welcomes you to a wildly engaging tableau, a fully constructed vision. “Jealousy” opens with soft vocals and birdsong. “In a Cab” is the slick soundtrack to racing through a cityscape in the rain, seeing the blurred lights of the high-rises above as you pass by. “Kelly Rowland” warps wistful pop song feelings. “Flagey God” takes you into a dark, pulsing club while only a few songs later, “Fallen For You” wraps you in echoed vocals and romantic, raw acoustic guitar.
It’s an accomplishment to craft an album of individual songs that stand strongly on their own but still feel cohesive. 2020 wasn’t all bad. It gave us Live Forever, a declaration of an artist’s arrival. - Lauren Lederman

Charli XCX - how i’m feeling now (Atlantic)
Back in the spring, many of us wondered who would put out something great in 2020’s quarantine. It was hard to imagine that the intensity of a global pandemic would really allow for artists to embrace creativity. That thought carries the same eye-roll inducing feeling of “We’ll get some great punk music out of a Trump presidency,” but of course, Charli XCX delivered. Through live workshops with fans and longstanding collaborators, she delivered songs to dance alone to in your bubble. Charli embraces the unknown of the moment but clutches onto what’s familiar. Under the glitch-pop veneer of the album, she digs into the anxieties of not just this moment of time but of the bigger questions we all confront: trajectories of relationships with friends, romantic partners, ourselves. Album standouts “forever” and “i finally understand” embrace that feeling of both looking for control and accepting the lack of it. Charli is a master at balancing this. - LL

Christine and the Queens - La Vita Nuova (Because Music)
Named after a Latin text by Dante Alighieri about missing a woman who has died, Chris’ La Vita Nuova is not about mourning a death but instead about loneliness and isolation, post-relationship or otherwise. It doesn’t bang quite like her previous two albums, but it hits harder than ever.

Dogleg - Melee (Triple Crown)
Released on March 13th, right as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Melee was supposed to be supported by three cancelled tours–SXSW, an opening slot for Microwave, and an opening slot for Joyce Manor–and an appearance at this year’s cancelled Pitchfork Music Festival. Listening to the songs on the record, you can only imagine how they translate: the jerky momentum of Bueno”, build-up of “Prom Hell”, gang vocals of “Fox”, clear-vocal anthem of “Wrist”, and odd groove of “Ender”.

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia & Dua Lipa/The Blessed Madonna: Club Future Nostalgia (Warner)
Where Dua Lipa’s much-anticipated second album Future Nostalgia succeeded was in its disco anthems and retro, club-ready beats, so who better to bring out the best of the record than The Blessed Madonna? The turntablist masterfully curates a mix of heavy hitters of the charts and the underground that not only offers an essential complement to Future Nostalgia but transcends it. Sending the tracks out to various producers and singers for features and then adding her own samples on top, she invites you to peel back the layers, enter a YouTube rabbit hole of sample searching as much as bopping along.

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - May Our Chambers Be Full (Sacred Bones)
Roadburn Festival has long been on my bucket list, and since the pandemic showed me how much live music can be taken away in a flash, when it’s safe again to travel and go to a festival, I may just pull the trigger and go--especially considering it’s the springboard for such fruitful and inspired collaborations as the one between Louisville singer-songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle and Baton Rouge sludge dwellers Thou. Rundle embraces the heavier opportunities on the follow-up to her incredible 2018 record On Dark Horses with the ever-flexible Thou backing her up vocally and instrumentally. Slow-burning opener “Killing Floor” offers a familiar introduction to fans of both--sort of what a Rundle/Thou song would sound like--before grunge chugger “Monolith” introduces huge, catchy riffs and “Out of Existence” a True Widow-esque dirge, newfound inspirations for both artists bringing the best out of each other. - JM
Tumblr media
Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters (Epic)
What makes Fetch the Bolt Cutters stand out among Apple’s catalog and music in general is the clarity with which Apple seethes at those who have wronged her, whether ex-boyfriends or patriarchal oppressors, and looks to her relationships with other women for peace of mind.

HAIM - Women in Music Pt. III (Columbia)
For HAIM, the title Women in Music Pt. III is suggestive that, more than their previous two records, their third centers around the experiences of being an all-female band in a historically white cis male-dominated scene, at least one that wouldn’t call catchy riffs written by a man “simple” or call attention to the faces a man makes while playing. What it doesn’t let on to is how deeply personal the record is, how, by unabashedly embracing genres and styles of music that they love, HAIM have made far and away their best album. Co-produced by the usual suspects, Danielle Haim, Ariel Rechtshaid, and ex-Vampire Weekender Rostam Batmanglij, it’s instrumentally and aesthetically dynamic and diverse, consistently earnest without devolving into cheese.

Irreversible Entanglements - Who Sent You? (International Anthem)
I’ve been captivated by Irreversible Entanglements ever since I first saw them at Pitchfork Music Festival 2018. The radical poetry of Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother) is the perfect front for a ramshackle mix of Luke Stewart’s spidery bass, Tcheser Holmes’ weighty drums, and a horn section that concocts tones that range from hopeful to desperate. At their best, Who Sent You? is a shining example of celebratory Afrofuturism and metaphysics that makes the urgency of Ayewa’s more concrete and political words all the more necessary. “No Más”, composed by Panamanian-born trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, is a declaration against imperialist oppression, while the stunning title track flips the switch like a Kara Walker painting, as Ayewa’s the one interrogating the police officer terrorizing her community. “Who sent you?” she repeats, never spiraling, grabbing a hold of the power and never letting go. - JM
Tumblr media
Jeff Parker - Suite for Max Brown (International Anthem/Nonesuch)
It’s Jeff Parker’s mom’s turn. After 2016′s The New Breed ended up being a tribute to the guitarist’s father, who passed away during the making of it, Parker decided to pay tribute to Maxine while she was still alive. Suite for Max Brown (Brown is his mother’s maiden name; Max is what people call her) is a genre-bending collection of tracks inspired by Parker’s DJing, juxtapositions of sequenced beats with improvisation that certainly sound like the brainchild of one individual. Indeed, Parker plays the majority of the instruments on it and engineered most of it at home or during his 2018 Headlands Center residency in Sausalito, CA; though all of the players and the vocalist (Jeff’s daughter Ruby Parker) on The New Breed show up, plus a couple trumpeters (piccolo player Rob Mazurek and Nate Walcott of Bright Eyes) and cellist Katinka Kleijn, Suite for Max Brown is a distinctly Jeff Parker record.

Jeff Rosenstock - NO DREAM (Polyvinyl)
Jeff Rosenstock throws us right into the spinning, manic energy of NO DREAM, his latest release from a seemingly endless well of music that never lacks urgency. It’s a reminder that though it’s been a strange year, the issues Rosenstock tackles here aren’t new. There’s no interest in making you feel comfortable here. On the album’s title track, Rosenstock sings, lulling you into a false sense of security, “They were separating families carelessly / Under the guise of protecting you and me.” But reality sets in, and the hazy guitars spin out as he spits, “It’s not a dream!” and, “Fuck violence!”
My image of Jeff Rosenstock in the year 2020 is masked up with “Black Lives Matter” scrawled across the fabric of his mask in Sharpie, performing album highlight “Scram!” on Late Night with Seth Meyers as high energy as ever. It felt like watching someone send out a beacon, both a distress signal and a call to arms. - LL

Jessie Ware - What’s Your Pleasure? (PMR/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
I am not someone who goes to clubs. I don’t “go out dancing,” preferring to let loose in the privacy of my own home or a trusted friend’s house party. But Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? makes me think I could embrace a night out like that, once the world opens up again, of course. The album is filled with syncopated disco beats that feel fresh and classic all at once. The abundant horns and strings on “Step Into My Life” are decadent, like light bouncing off sequins in a dark room. Ware’s voice is slinky and velvety one moment, windswept like her album cover the next. It’s songs like “Save a Kiss” that embrace both, allowing her to show off her range. - LL
Tumblr media
Laura Marling - Song for Our Daughter (Partisan)
With sparse production, mostly from her but with additions from Ethan Johns and Dom Monks, Marling foregoes the comparative maximalism of the Blake Mills-produced Semper Femina, her last proper full-length, and 2018′s LUMP collaboration. The songs aren’t simple, but they’re succinct, and every element, from Marling’s finger-picked guitars, the occasional slide guitar, and that unmistakably calm voice, sometimes alone and sometimes layered, fits. It’s her most universal set of songs yet, centering around the times when we’re apart from one another but reflecting on when we were together and when we might be together again, with no guarantees.

Les Amazones d’Afrique - Amazones Power (Real World Records)
The groovy pan-African collective expands upon their debut Republique Amazone and then some with Amazones Power, a tour-de-force statement of female empowerment in the face of oppression against women throughout the African diaspora. Indeed, the album is more than just songs boldly decrying FGM, though those demands ring heavily. Instead, the group goes further, delving into gender power structures in marriage on “Queens” and selectively finding strength in tradition on “Dreams”. And this time, they include men to stand alongside with them. “Together we must stand / Together we must end this,” sings Guinean musician/dancer/artist Niariu on opener “Heavy” in solidarity with features Douranne (Boy) Fall and Magueye Diouk (Jon Grace) of Paris band Nyoko Bokbae. But perhaps it’s her kiss-off on “Smile” that hits hardest: “I shut up for no one.” - JM
Tumblr media
Lianne La Havas - Lianne La Havas (Nonesuch)
The British singer-songwriter’s much anticipated follow-up to 2015′s Blood was better than I could have ever imagined. A song cycle about life cycles--of nature, of lives, of a relationship--inspired by an actual breakup, Lianne La Havas is a contemporary neo soul masterpiece. Overview opener “Bittersweet” is an instant earworm, La Havas’ coo-turned-belt filling the space between classic and increasingly emotive slabs of piano and guitar. Funky, lovestruck strut “Read My Mind” is the soundtrack for the unbridled confidence of finding new love. Yes, the doubts begin to sow on the fingerpicked melancholy of “Green Papaya” and “Can’t Fight”, and where the album goes from a simple narrative perspective may be predictable: They break up, they don’t get back together, La Havas enjoys her independence. But the depth of the arrangements and assuredness of La Havas’ singing is a product of an artist starting to really show us what she can do. And how many people can pull off a Radiohead cover like that? - JM
Tumblr media
Lomelda - Hannah (Double Double Whammy)
What does it mean to title an album after yourself? Lomelda’s latest album is centered around discovering more about yourself while not always having the answers. Despite the lyrical content, the album is self-assured. Hannah Read’s voice feels as steady as ever as it navigates these twisting questions, like the way the world can shift after a kiss. She finds power in softness and reflection throughout the album, like when she explores the mantra-like words of “Wonder” or through a reminder to do no harm in “Hannah Sun”. In a year that allowed for perhaps more reflection than usual, Hannah makes space for the questions that arise out of figuring yourself out, of making sense of the messiness of it all, wrapped in warm guitar, balanced vocals, and steady drums. - LL
Tumblr media
Moses Sumney - Grae (Jagjaguwar)
“Am I vital / If my heart is idle? / Am I doomed?” Moses Sumney famously sang on his stunning 2017 debut Aromanticism, an album that saw him developing his acceptance of being alone. grae, his two-part 2nd full-length, and his first since officially moving from L.A. to the Appalachian Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, doubles down on themes of heartbreak, but instead of being sure in his seclusion, he embraces the unknown. The album teeters between interludes of platitudes about isolation and ruminations on failed human connection, and maximally arranged clutches of uncertainty. “When my mind’s clouded and filled with doubt / That’s when I feel the most alive,” Sumney coos over horns and piano on slinky soul song “Cut Me”; it’s an effective mantra for the album.

Norah Jones - Pick Me Up Off The Floor (Blue Note)
At the time we previewed Norah Jones’ 7th studio album, she had only released a few tracks from it. Turns out the rest was just as powerful. From the blues stomp of “Flame Twin” to the rolling piano stylings of “Hurts to Be Alone”, Pick Me Up Off The Floor is an album full of jazzy orchestrations and soul and gospel-indebted arrangements, Jones’ silky, yearning voice tying together the simple, yet lush and deep instrumentation. And that other Tweedy feature, that closes the album? It’s a heartbreaking portrait of loneliness, one of many on a record that still manages to celebrate being alive all the while. - JM
Tumblr media
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher (Dead Oceans)
Phoebe Bridgers is a master of details. Her lyrics shine when they get specific. They range from the mundane to morbid: A superfan’s ghost-like wandering under a drugstore’s fluorescent lights, a skinhead likely buried under a blooming garden, reckoning with the you in “Moon Song”’s lines, “You are sick, and you’re married / And you might be dying.” Bridgers has always been able to set a scene meticulously, and Punisher arrived with 11 songs that expanded that skill, both lyrically and musically, with her dark humor intact and a fuller sound that includes her boygenuis collaborators’ harmonies. - LL
Tumblr media
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love: The Demos & Dry - The Demos (Island)
Yes, revisiting Dry’s demos as a separate entity is still worthwhile. Harvey’s powerhouse vocal performance carries the acoustic strummed “Oh My Lover”, while the comparatively minimal arrangement of “Victory” highlights bluesy riffing, call-and-response harmonies, and layered guitar and vocals. The singles, the slinky and sharp “Dress” and propulsive anthem “Sheela-Na-Gig”, hold up to their ultimate studio versions, too. But it’s the To Bring You My Love material that provides novelty because it’s never been released and more so because it encompasses the greatest aesthetic contrast from the album. From the warbling hues and guitar lines of the title track to the tremolo haze of “Teclo” to the crisp snares of “Working With The Man”, the demos show a continuity and level of cohesiveness with the diversity of Dry and Rid of Me not shown on the studio version of Harvey’s more accessible commercial breakout. (Predictably, the album’s most well-known song, “Down by the Water”, is the closest to its eventual version.) “Long Snake Moan” is simultaneously more spacious and more noisy, its garage blues a total contrast to the lurking “I Think I’m A Mother” and swaying shanty “Send His Love To Me”. And “The Dancer” fully embraces its flamenco influences, hand claps and all.
Tumblr media
Porridge Radio - Every Bad (Secretly Canadian)
Is there a better opening line than “I’m bored to death, let’s argue”? That kind of duality is found across all of Every Bad as it grapples with the frustrations and anxiety of trying to figure it all out, whatever that might mean for you. “Maybe I was born confused, but I’m not,” vocalist Dana Margolin repeats throughout the opening track, roping in listeners with the dizzying feeling of trying to make sense of yourself. The band’s guitar and synth sound coupled with Margolin’s howl makes for a dance party filled with dread, rendering Margolin’s already strong, repetitive lyrics even more spiraling. And yet, by the time we get to “Lilacs”, a glimmer of something else shines through as the music gets more manic and Margolin’s voice begins to soar: “I don’t want to get bitter / I want us to get better / I want us to be kinder / To ourselves and to each other.” - LL
Tumblr media
Sault - Untitled (Rise) & Untitled (Black Is) (Forever Living Originals)
Yes, Black Is still pulls plenty of devastating punches. “Eternal Life”, a segue from the gospel boost of “US”, juxtaposes a deliberate drum beat with zooming synths, both ascending like a chorus of angels, as they sing, “I see sadness in your eye / ‘Cause I know you don’t wanna die,” presenting the oppression of Black life at the hands of white supremacy in inarguable terms. Ultimately, though, it’s the anthemic nature of the songs, resistant of platitudes, that shines through. “Nobody cared / This generation cares,” says Laurette Josiah on “This Generation”. Whether she’s talking about young people in general or the latest generation of young Black leaders, the sentiment is reflected on songs like “Black”, wherein over dynamic, sinewy instrumentation, the singers alternate between encouragement, support, and love of the self and others.

Shamir - Shamir (self-released)
Shamir’s voice is a bright beacon in a sea of conventional singers. Shamir captures the effervescence of pop music and weaves it together with elements of country, alt rock, and diary confessional lyrics all supported by the emotion and range of his vocals. There’s something for everyone across the album’s 11 shimmering tracks. Lead single and opener “On My Own” feels like a declaration of self and self-sufficiency, an anthem of a breakup song. The almost pop-punk bounce of “Pretty When I’m Sad”, paired perfectly with lines like the angst-ridden, “Let’s fuck around inside each other’s heads,” feels impossible to not bop along to. The twang of “Other Side” would put a country crooner to shame. That’s the power of Shamir. His voice has the ability to smoothly convey joy, resilience, and humor. He uses elements of several genres, not just the dance-pop of his debut, to build a unique album that gives listeners so much to sift through and, of course, dance to. - LL

Songhoy Blues - Optimisme (Fat Possum)
If Songhoy Blues’ second album Resistance lacked “the grit of its predecessor,” it’s clear from the hard rock stomp of the opening track of Malian band’s third album Optimisme that they rediscovered their mojo. More importantly, they couple this maximal brashness with tributes to those who make their world a better place: fighters for freedom, women, the young. It’s perhaps the first Songhoy Blues record to truly combine the celebratory nature of their desert blues with a balanced mixture of idealism and vigor. - JM

Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone (Pure Noise)
How can you find hope in hopelessness, or optimism when every news story points to cruelty? Is it naïve to keep searching for light in the dark? I don’t think so, and I don’t think Spanish Love Songs does, either. I’d like to think we both believe that’s not naivety, but power. It’s the embers you need to really ignite a flame. After all, this is the band with a song titled “Optimism (As a Radical Life Choice)”. It’s a band whose crunching guitars and earnestness insist that despite death and depression and addiction, the instinct to survive shines brightly above all. That relentless hope resurfaces across Brave Faces Everyone’s 10 tracks even as it works through the bleakness of everyday life. - LL

Tashi Dorji - Stateless (Drag City)
The magnum opus from the Asheville-based picker is a group of evocatively titled, disorderly songs about the desolate hellscape of America for outsiders and immigrants. Enigmatic in its nature, not exactly narrative, Stateless combines Dorji’s urgent strumming with moody motifs, captured beautifully in a studio setting for maximum emotional wallop. - JM

Touche Amore - Lament (Epitaph)
Is this what an almost uplifting Touche Amore album sounds like? It’s cathartic in a newer way for the band, especially after the beautifully rendered grief of Stage Four. Lament loses none of the band’s aggression or urgency. “Come Heroine” thrusts listeners into that urgency and introduces a moment of warmth, Jeremy Bolm’s vocals still rasping and insistent: “You brought me in / You took to me / And reversed the atrophy.” The bounciness of “Reminders” may seem close to optimism, but a sharper look at the lyrics uncovers more than blindly looking to the things that bring joy. “I’ll Be Your Host” is reflective, a few years removed from Touche Amore’s previous album and the immediacy of loss, self-aware and growing, but still raw. The album closer, “A Forecast”, takes a turn, a lone voice and piano acting as a confessional before giving way to thrashing guitars and the realization that growth and reckoning with trauma doesn’t mean minimizing it. It means learning to keep moving forward and to stop for help when you may need it. - LL

Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud (Merge)
The best album yet from Katie Crutchfield is inspired by positive personal change (getting sober, dealing with codependency issues, her blossoming love with singer-songwriter Kevin Morby) and reflections on family and friends. Named after the suburb of Orlando where her father’s from, Saint Cloud is a genre-hopping collection of stories and feelings that doesn’t necessarily follow any semblance of narrative. On opener “Oxbow” and country-tinged ditty “Can’t Do Much”, Crutchfield’s increasingly aware of the need to pick your side and your battles, whether in the relationship between two people or between the allure of the bottle and the next-day hangover. Some of the best songs on the album see her finding commonalities with others as a means towards self-love. Gentle strummer “The Eye” refers to her natural creative relationships with Morby and her sister Allison. “War” she wrote for herself and best friend, who is also sober, the title a metaphor for one’s fight to remain substance-free. “Witches” is an ode to her best friends, including Allison and Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan, all equally frustrated by the toxic nature of the music industry and the world at large, ultimately lifting each other up because they simply have each other.

In your time with the the Avengers, you’d become close to a particular set of people; mostly Wanda, Bucky, Tony, and Natasha.
“You going out tonight?” Wanda asked as she peeked her head in the door, beaming at you.
“Yeah, I think so. Sam, Bucky, Steve and Scott are all going out, and Scott invited me along,” you said, giddy at the thought of spending the entire evening with Bucky.
Wanda smiled knowingly at you. “Alright, have fun. Keep me and Nat updated,” she said, winking as she disappeared around the corner.
You laughed at that, knowing they’d be too busy on mission to pay attention to your messages. You had today and tomorrow off and the boys had until 0800 tomorrow, so they were going out to enjoy a night on the town. Scott had invited you, though you secretly wished it had been Bucky. He was so quiet, though, that you weren’t surprised the louder and more outgoing Scott had spoken up first.
If you had known how it would have ended you would have chosen to stay in that night. You would have browsed the internet lazily, watched Netflix, baked a cake, gone and seen a movie alone. Anything. You would do almost anything to take that one decision back.
“(Y/N)! You ready to go?” Steve asked courteously as you entered the garage. He was standing next to one of Tony’s nicer cars and you wondered briefly how he’d convinced him to let him borrow it; You considered yourself one of the few people Tony trusted enough with his more expensive toys. Steve, Scott, and Sam loitering nearby, looking up at you at the sound of your name.
“Yup! Let’s roll, boys!” you said, cheering along with Sam and Scott who looked absolutely excited for the night to come.
“We need to be back by-”
“Yeah, yeah, Steve. We know. Get in the car,” Sam said dismissively as he hopped into his own car. Scott hopped in the passenger side and you looked between the two cars. You knew which one you wanted to go in, but-
“You can ride with us,” Bucky said, holding the passenger side door open.
You tried to keep a cool head, but it was so difficult with those eyes and those arms and that voice- Focus, (Y/N).
“Cool.”
Nailed it.
Your lukewarm response didn’t seem to phase Bucky. He smiled as you walked over, holding the door open for you while you climbed in the back. Once you were safely tucked away he climbed in the passenger seat. Steve already had the engine running.
“Buckled up?” Steve asked the both of you, mom voice in full effect.
“Yes, Steve,” you and Bucky chimed in together. You grinned and caught Bucky doing the same in the rearview mirror.
Sam was already pulling out of the garage and Steve tailed after him, the engine purring under his control. You didn’t have to see his face to know he was enjoying this masterpiece of a machine.
“Alright, Sam and Scott insisted we ’pre-game.’” Bucky said ominously, holding up a bottle you recognized all too well.
“Oh, hell no. That’s that Asgardian stuff. I’m not doing that again,” you said, glaring at the bottle as though it had peed on your ancestors’ graves.
Bucky chuckled at your reaction. “No, no. This stuff’s for me and Steve. This is for you,” he said, handing you a completely full bottle of Jack Daniel’s.
“Alright, now we’re talking,” you said mischievously, grabbing the bottle from his hands. He smiled at you, a deep chuckle rolling from his lips at your excitement.
“The place we’re going to isn’t too far out, right?” you asked them curiously.
“Nope. About twenty minutes. Why?” Steve asked curiously.
“Open your bottle, tin man,” you said playfully as you worked the cap off of the Jack Daniel’s.
“I don’t know, (Y/N). I don’t think Steve-”
“I have no idea what you two are talking about. I’ve gone temporarily blind to all bottles of alcohol in this car,” Steve said, small smile on his lips.
“You heard the Captain,” you said, waggling your eyebrows at Steve.
“Alright, alright,” he conceded good-naturedly, bright smile lighting up his features.
“Cheers!” you said jovially, clanking your bottle against his.
“Cheers,” he agreed happily. A half second later you both took a generous swig out of each of your bottles.
By the time you arrived at the club, you were just the right amount of buzzed. Everything was funnier and more pleasant. Sam and Scott had arrived before the three of you and by the looks of it Sam was busy trying to catch up to Scott’s level of inebriation.
Before you’d entered the club, Steve had downed nearly a third of the Asgardian liquor in one go; you’d been an interesting mixture of horrified and impressed. Enhanced DNA or not, that wold definitely hit him hard at some point. Bucky had drank around the same amount, but he’d had the advantage of spacing it out on the drive over.
You walked over to the bar and were about to order yourself a drink when Bucky appeared next to you, flagging down the bartender.
“You like beer?” he asked, glancing at you, coy smile on his lips. You had to tear your gaze away from them to nod, guilty smile on your lips.
“Two Guinness, please,” he told the waiter, those his eyes never left yours. You felt your cheeks heat under his gaze. Sure, you were friends but the way he was looking at you-
The moment between you was ruined slightly by the bartender returning with your beers, the foaming ale still setting in their signature glasses.
Tumblr media
“I’m glad you came out today,” Bucky said as you made your way back to the table. He wasn’t looking at you, but his cheeks were a little pink. Whether or not it was from the Asgardian booze or his statement, you couldn’t be sure.
“You are?” you asked a little too quickly as you turned to look at him, surprised.
“Yeah, I love hanging out with the guys, but... It’s better with you here,” he said almost shyly, determinedly avoiding your gaze.
You stopped walking. Maybe it was the alcohol talking (though that had mostly warn off by now, hence the beer), but you felt braver than you did normally. “Alright, Buck. How much of that Asgardian hooch did you sneak in here?” you asked playfully, watching him closely for a reaction.
He turned to face you, smile lighting up the whole room. “Ha! You said hooch. No one says that these days!” he chuckled. “I miss that word. It was a great word,” he said whimsically, moving closer to your as he spoke until he was less than a foot in front of you. He set his beer down on the small table next to you and seemed to forget all about it less than a moment later.
“I’m guessing the rest of the bottle, then?” you said, raising an eyebrow at him, playful grin on your lips.
“I think I had a few less shots than you think I did... but I had to borrow some liquid courage,” he said, suddenly looking unsure and apprehensive.
“Liquid courage? What for?” you asked curiously as you set your beer down next to his, crossing your arms as you studied him. He was definitely acting strange and you just had to-
“To tell you that I like you,” he said quickly, as though he thought if he didn’t get the words out in one breath he would never be able to say them.
The world stopped moving for a moment, then reality came crashing back down.
You held your hand up, three fingers sticking up.
“How many fingers am I holding up?” you asked him critically, certain he was too drunk to function.
He sighed and took your hand gently, nestling it between his flesh and metal one.
“I’m not drunk. I stopped taking shots after the first two,” he said as he ran his thumbs lightly over the back of your hand. “And that was... four hours ago, now,” he said, checking the giant clock on the wall.
“Say the alphabet backwards,” you ordered, not daring to hope.
“I don’t think I can do that stone cold sober,” Bucky said, grimacing.
“Neither can I,” you admitted, smile returning.
“May I kiss you?” he asked quietly, taking a half step forward to close the gap between the two of you.
“Yes you may, Sarge,” you whispered.
His hands released yours to wrap around your waist and your stood on your toes as he leaned down, lips meeting perfectly in the middle. It was perfect, everything that you wanted it to be. Your fingers found their way into his dark chocolate locks, getting tangled as you both deepened the kiss. His metal hand moved up to cradle the back of your neck and-
Cheers, jeers, and lewd whistles from voices you knew all too well overtook your moment and you and Bucky broke apart, panting for air.
“About damned time!” Sam yelled from across the club’s bar, proud smile on his face.
Steve looked like a mom who had finally married their daughter off to a nice, rich young man; it was a little creepy, honestly. You could almost see the tears forming in his eyes.
Scott had been cheering along with Sam a moment ago but now seemed to be attempting to buy the bar’s entire stock of liquor.
You groaned, rolling your eyes at the lot of them and turned back to Bucky, who was staring down at you, the fondness you found in his gaze making your cheeks heat.
“Where were we?” he whispered, leaning down until his nose was less than an inch from yours.
“I think somewhere around-” your sentence was cut short as you crashed your lips against his, with even more passion than the first kiss.
The rest of the night passed by in a blur. You knew you and the guys were breaking about a dozen rules, but no one, not even Steve, seemed to care. You were all having too much fun. Besides, everyone on the team had done what you were doing before; you’d taken care of Nat and Wanda after more than one such wild night.
By the time your mangy crew rolled back into the base it was nearly 4 am. The boys would likely regret this escapade tomorrow (with the exception of, perhaps, Bucky, who you’d spend the entire night kissing whenever you could).
You knew Wanda and Nat would still be up so you decided to go tell them the exciting news; you hadn’t had time to update them because of how busy you’d been.
You were right. Nat and Wanda were in Wanda’s room, debriefing from their mission earlier in the day. You sauntered in, still a little tipsy.
“Guuuuuuys!” you said excitedly, plopping down next to them on Wanda’s bed.
“Jesus, (Y/N). You smell like you could light this entire base on fire,” Nat said, wincing slightly.
“That’s because I drank a lot tonight!” you said, smiling widely at them. “But that’s not important. Listen, this was the best night ever-
And so you regaled them with the entire tale, from the moment you left the garage from the moment you got back in, though your entire tale focused on you and Bucky, almost completely leaving out Sam, Steve, and Scott.
They didn’t seem as excited as you thought they’d be, but you were in too good of a mood to care.
“Oh god, it’s so late! I’ve kept you two long enough as is! Goodnight, guys! Sleep tight!” you said cheerily, making your way back to your room.
A thought struck you about a third of the way there, and you pulled your phone out of your pocket, pulling up your group chat with Wanda and Natasha.
Oh, please don’t let Bucky know I told you! The boys knowing is one thing, but I’m not even sure what we are yet and I don’t wanna put any pressure on him!
Natasha responded just a few seconds later.
You literally just told us how you broke around ten rules. In detail.
The kind of blind panic that hit you was only the kind a slightly intoxicated person gets. It’s when the fog of the alcohol clears and suddenly everything is razor sharp and you know only one thing; pure, unbridled terror.
If she was implying what you thought she was implying- that she had the obligation to turn you in- you had to go back and convince her otherwise.
You burst back into Wanda’s room, chest heaving from dead sprinting across most of the floor.
“Don’t tell anyone! I’m begging you!” you said, slamming the door behind you.
Wanda and Nat glanced at each other, expressions hard.
“You backed us into a corner here, (Y/N)... you said that entire story with the door wide open. Anyone could have heard and-”
“The only thing that happened tonight was that I went out and got really drunk. Made a fool of myself. The boys were just there to babysit me, but I didn’t make it easy for them,” you said, lying through your teeth. They knew you were doing it, too. They understood.
If you were going down, you wanted to at least be the only one to do so. You didn’t want to take Bucky down with you.
“I was obviously drunk earlier. Can’t trust a word of what I said. Let’s be real, I definitely made up the parts about Bucky and me. That’s just a fantasy, and we all know it,” you said, heart twisting painfully as you said it.
Natasha and Wanda looked at you, then to each other, then back to your again. “Anyone could have heard, (Y/N). If we don’t tell someone and it gets out that we knew-”
“Please. I’m begging you. Don’t tell anyone. I’ll make sure the guys don’t breathe a word of this,” you pleaded, the sense of dread in your stomach nearly overwhelming. You were definitely about to vomit. Or faint. Maybe both.
Wanda looked at Nat and that did that thing they could do where they had a conversation with only their eyes before Nat sighed heavily. “Fine, fine. We won’t say anything. But we can’t protect you, (Y/N). If it what happens gets out-”
“Thank you!” you said hurriedly, a wave of relief crashing over you.
“You should get out of the base for a bit. At least that way if this shit does get out, they can’t interrogate you for anything while you’re in this state. Maybe also brush your teeth,” Nat said, grimacing.
“Got it. I’ll go to one of the safe houses,” you said hurriedly. “Thanks for the advice, guys!” you said as you ran out of the room.
You spent only enough time in your room for a quick shower and to brush your teeth, throwing on a pair of fresh clothes before you threw a spare outfit in a backpack and headed to the garage.
One self-driving car ride later you were in one of the nearby safe houses. It was nearly 5 am and you wanted to sleep, but your mind wouldn’t let you. It was too busy planning out every single thing that could go wrong. It kept going through each doomsday scenario. You kept seeing Bucky yelling at you for getting him kicked off the team, Natasha, Wanda, and Steve’s looks of cold hatred.
By 8 am you’d given up on sleep, choosing to instead watch light pour in from the outside.
Your cell phone buzzed; it was the number they used for calling you back to base. If possible, it set your pulse racing faster.
You checked the message and felt that familiar feeling of dread gnawing once again at your stomach.
Agent (Y/L/N). Your presence is required at the Avengers base immediately.
Ah, yes. Ominous, vague, demanding; the perfect triple threat for attempted murder by stress-induced heart attack.
“Your position as an Avenger is being terminated immediately and you won’t be offered a different position within our organization,” the designated council speaker said, staring at you as though you hadn’t spent years working together. You knew his wife. You went to his kid’s birthday party.
No matter how many times your brain replayed the words in your head, they didn’t seem real. You said them over and over and over again. Picked apart each word until it meant nothing to you, then started over again.
You stared at the documents in front of you. Termination notice, awaiting your signature, the expensive fountain pen on the desk staring at you accusingly.
“I didn’t do it,” you said, having no other options than to lie. They had no proof, after all. Nothing except rumors.
“We have a trusted source. I can’t reveal names, but they heard the whole story and did the right thing by coming to us. We can’t allow these deviant behaviors in our organization...”
He kept talking, but you didn’t hear anything he said. Your world was crumbling down around you. You were aware of the other council members watching you, seemingly oblivious to how you were dying.
This place was your home. These people were your family... and someone had betrayed you.
You wanted to ask about Bucky, but you knew it wouldn’t help his case. You just hoped whoever ratted you out had more love for him than you. He didn’t deserve this. He didn’t deserve to be sat in this room, being told that everything you did couldn’t make up for one night. One mistake. He’d finally begun turning his life around. He had Steve back, he had-
He had you.
And look what you’d gotten yourself into; probably him, too.
“Ms. (Y/L/N)?” the councilman asked, face and voice emotionless.
You looked up from the ground, eyes devoid of light. “What?” you asked, voice so small it was almost nonexistent.
“Will you sign the papers?” he asked, gesturing to the documents in front of you.
You stared at them for a long moment, eyes glancing over words like “terminated” “misconduct” and your own name flashing up from the page at you like neon lights.
“I want the record to show that by I don’t admit to these allegations by signing this,” you said, voice stronger than it had any right to be.
“There is a section for personal claims at the end,” he said as you picked up the pen with a shaky hand.
Your hand trembled as you wrote your peace, claiming your value to the Avengers as well as you innocence before you signed your name, the pen flying off the edge of the paper as you inked the last letter of your name, the tip gouging into the wood.
You pushed the papers away and sat, frozen for a moment.
This was really happening.
You’d been kicked out of the Avengers. You had to leave the base; the place you were happiest. You had to leave Bucky.
“I’ll need some time to collect my things and arrange transportation,” you said as you stood, jaw set defiantly. You would not cry. Not here, not in front of them.
“Of course. FRIDAY will help you make the proper arrangements,” the councilman said.
You thought about walking away without another word, but thought better of it. You were better than what they were making you out to be.
You extended your hand and looked the councilman straight in the eye. “Thank you for the opportunities you’ve given me and the time we’ve spent working together. I’m sorry it ended this way,” you said solemnly.
He took your hand, shaking it firmly, his mask of composure finally cracking a bit, letting a sad light shine in his eyes.
You left the conference room. When you didn’t see Bucky outside you nearly cried from the relief.
You made it into an abandoned tech room before you lost it. You sank to your knees, finally letting the reality of it sink in.
You weren’t an Avenger. You couldn’t come back here again. The family you found here and the home you’d made for yourself was gone...
And you only had yourself to blame.
At that moment, you thought that that was the worst pain you’d ever felt. Standing upon the wreckage of your life, searching for someone to blame, to hate, and finding only yourself.
You didn’t know how long you cried by yourself, but somehow Agent Maria Hill found you. She apparently hadn’t heard the news yet but was so alarmed by your emotionally wrecked state that you ended up telling her what had just happened, though you were too ashamed of what you did to get to that point to tell her what happened last night.
How had your life gone from sixty to zero in the span of a few short hours? You didn’t think you’d ever recover from the whiplash.
One thing came from talking Maria; focusing on the facts calmed you down enough to look almost-not-a-complete-fucking-mess, so you carefully exited the tech lab you’d been hiding in and headed towards your room.
That was when you saw him on the floor above you, headed towards the conference room, the Councilman walking in front of him, looking grim.
“No,” you whispered, hand covering your mouth in horror.
You were wrong. Destroying your own life was nothing compared to this; to destroying Bucky’s. You nearly broke down in the hallway, but managed to keep walking. You couldn’t help him. You only hoped he would get a more lenient ruling than you did. You made your way towards the residential level, the elevator ride and hallways passing by in a blur.
It was only once you got to the common room and a chorus of concerned voices met your ears that you realized how far you’d gotten, and that you’d been crying the entire way.
Sam, Scott, Wanda, and Natasha were all looking at you, concern etched on their faces.
“Are you alright?” Natasha asked, concern on her face. But... there was something there too. Comprehension. Understanding. Knowledge. You glanced at Wanda. She was wearing a matching expression.
She knew what had happened.
“LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!” you screamed at the two of them, voice taking on a tone it never had before. All of the emotions that had been vacant up until then returned with a vengeance. Never before had you felt so betrayed. Never had you felt anger such as this. They didn’t just screw you, they screwed Bucky, too.
They glanced at each other and, to their credit, didn’t push you, and exited the room quickly and quietly.
As soon as they were out of the room, the tears returned. Sam and Scott looked at each other hesitantly. Natasha and Wanda had been the clear targets of your angry outburst a moment before, but they were obviously scared you’d blow up at them, too.
“I got fired,” you said weakly between hiccuping sobs.
“What?” Scott asked, shocked. “Can we even be fired?”
“Yeah, Tic Tac. We can,” Sam said quietly.
“Bucky’s being fired right now, too,” you said, voice cracking pathetically mid-sentence.
“How do you know?” Sam asked as he pulled you in for a hug. You wished he wouldn’t. It just made you cry harder. It was another thing you’d miss; warm Sam hugs.
“Saw him with th’ councilman. Plus, it’s my fault,” you said, voice devoid of all emotion except soul-crushing self-loathing.
“Man, to hell with that BS. I’m quitting!” Scott said stubbornly, joining in on the hug. You managed a single short laugh which quickly dissolved into more tears. Another thing you’d miss; Scott’s sense of humor.
You broke away from them, giving them a fake smile through the tears. “I- I have to go pack,” you said quickly, turning away from them to practically run to your room. Sam and Scott stared after, completely at a loss of how to comfort you.
It was three hours later when you saw Bucky next. You’d been cleaning your DVDs out from the lounge room when you’d spotted him walking down the hallway, talking sadly with Natasha, Steve, and Wanda.
It made your blood boil. Didn’t he know Wanda and Natasha were half the reason the two of you were in this situation.
You angrily shoved the remainder of your DVDs into your bag, pointedly ignoring all four of them as they turned to look at the commotion you’d caused.
You slung the bag over your shoulder and walked back all of them without saying a word.
What was there to say, after all?
Natasha and Wanda had screwed you over...
And you’d screwed Buck over.
No, you didn’t want to talk to Natasha or Wanda ever again, and you were sure Bucky wouldn’t want to talk to you. You know you wouldn’t if you were him.
It was only as Bucky was getting ready to leave, saying goodbye to his favorite spot on the roof, that you finally found the courage to say something to him. You’d meant to say a lot of different things. Excuses, declarations of love, apologies a mile long, but the closer you got to him the harder it was to hold back your emotions.
By the time you were five feet behind him you were sobbing, barely keeping yourself quiet-ish.
“I’m sorry!” you wailed, frozen in place, unable to take another step forward. “I ruined it for you! I ruined all of this for you! I didn’t mean to-” you managed to gasp the words out between hiccups and sobs.
“Shh, I know,” he said quietly, closing the distance between you with two short strides. You reached for each other at the same time and he pulled you to his chest. “It’s alright,” he murmured softly, his own eyes swimming with tears.
“No, it’s not! I ruined your fucking life and you should be punching me right now, not hugging me!” you gasped, burying your face deeper into his chest, soaking his shirt with your tears. “I’m so fucking sorry.”
“I know,” he said quietly, giving you a gentle squeeze.
You stood like that for a few minutes, in each other’s arms, before he pulled away and placed a light kiss to your forehead.
The simple gesture made hope flutter in your chest.
“Can... can we still...” you gestured helplessly at the space between the two of you, hope written on your face as clear as day.
He smiled, but it was a sad thing, devoid of anything resembling happiness. “It may take me some time to want to pursue this particular relationship,” he said quietly, unable to meet your gaze.
And just like that, the small amount of hope you’d managed to gather from the ashes was destroyed again, leaving you even more devastated than the last time.
“I understand,” you said mechanically. “I’m sorry Natasha and Wanda told the council-”
“What are you talking about?” he asked, genuine confusion on his face.
“... Natasha and Wanda told the council what we didn’t last night. They’re the only ones I told,” you said, brows furrowing in confusion. Had they really not told him-
“(Y/N)... Tony overheard your conversation with them. He’s the one who told the council...” Bucky said, wincing at your expression.
“Where are they?” you asked frantically. “I... I think I owe them an apology,” you mumbled guiltily, remembering how you’d snapped at them earlier in the day.
“Last I checked they were in the kitchen,” Bucky informed you.
“Don’t leave without saying goodbye! Please!” you said, glancing at the door behind you.
“I won’t leave without sayin’ goodbye. Promise,” he said, half smile on his lips.
Ten minutes you were sobbing on the couch with Wanda and Natasha. Wanda had taken one look at your face and started crying. Natasha made it halfway through one sentence of your garbled apology before she succumbed to her tears, too. The three of you sat like that for some time, until FRIDAY informed you it was time for Bucky to leave.
All of you made your way to hangar-garage. To your dismay and unending anger, Tony was there, too.
As if that wasn’t enough, Bucky didn’t seem to be angry at Tony. In fact, they seemed to be getting along as well as ever.
Tony kept glancing at you, but you didn’t say a word to him as the group said their goodbyes to Bucky. You’d be leaving tomorrow, but somehow you knew your own sendoff wouldn’t be as heartfelt as this one.
When you hugged Bucky just before he got in the car, you somehow knew it was the last time you’d ever get to hold him again; the time you’d ever get to see him in person again.
It hurt, leaving. It hurt so much that you had trouble functioning at first. The world had lost its color. Music had lost its magic. Your interests were suddenly dull.
You were dying inside your own mind, so your brain did the only thing it could to try and save itself.
It turned the sadness to hatred.
Tony was the first one crossed off of every aspect of your life. In fact, he hadn’t even survived the plane ride to your new residence; you’d deleted and blocked him from anything and everything.
Wanda and Natasha weren’t deleted, but you grew to resent them. They didn’t defend you against Tony’s accusations, too preoccupied with keeping their own hides safe to save yours. It was easy to hate them for that part, really, because you knew Wanda had done just as much as you had, and Natasha had done everything you’d done, but at least twice.
Yet they were still Avengers.
You didn’t try to contact Bucky. You had no right, after all. Trying to convince Bucky to let you back into his life would be like cancer trying to convince its host that it was actually beneficial.
No, your sadness around Bucky turned into hatred for yourself.
After months of resentment and hate you’d tried to reach out to Wanda and Natasha, but their responses contained only the same hate you already felt for yourself. You didn’t even try to contact Bucky.
It was then, and only then, that you realized:
One mistake is all it takes to break something beyond repair.
And that, sometimes, no matter how much you want something to go back to the way it was, it can’t.
Yes, one mistake was all it took.
And in this case, you were the mistake.

Save Me- (Simon- Part 4)
SimonRightHandMan said to Shelby Devereaux:
Damn, but I love to see that blush. Plus, when she stumbles and basically presses against me...her small softness against the large, hard planes of my torso...fuck, she's so hot and helpless it triggers all my white knight instincts that have laid dormant for so long. I hope she is OK with being rescued by a gray knight. And those light green eyes, looking up into mine...how her lips form the word "pleasure" and my name...yeah, I could live on feasting on and drinking from those lips. I nod, so she knows I'm paying attention, but I'm trying to focus on getting us to the truck...I'm half carrying her, as she stays pressed against me. Not that I'm complaining, of course. More nodding as she talks about those who attacked her sister and the people she was with. Yeah, I know the type, and yeah, I'm listening. When she slows down and almost stops as we get to the truck, I turn to look down at her again, and hear every word. Oh. Damn. She's not wearing any panties 'cuz those animals cut them off of her...AND she's worried about what I'd think of her. Hell, I've had women offer to blow me for a bottle of water, or a mouthful of jerky. As rare as underthings are in this brave new world, going commando is not really all that uncommon. But I understand...this woman is something of a lady, and I couldn't be happier. Maybe she'll bring out the best in me. I reach up with my free hand, and lightly brush her blushing cheek with the backs of my fingers...then brush an errant lock of hair behind her ear, speaking in a low growl that only she can hear as I realize the guys are all watching this.
Darlin' --- you're with a man who was raised to be a gentleman, a Navy veteran, and Negan's right hand man. I'll make sure you have no reason to be embarrassed, and I already know I could never think less of you...
Smiling as charmingly as possible, I move that free hand to her shoulder, and then lean down to place my lips nearly upon her delicate seashell ear.
...in fact, I am pretty sure I'll only be able to think MORE of you, as time goes by, Shelby.
Before she can react properly I've released her shoulder, while still holding her hand with the other, and I turn to face the boys. When I speak again, it's loud, firm, and clear in the authority I have, second only to Negan's.
As I speak, I point at the person I'm speaking to, even though I use their names. It's something that I picked up in the military, and something Negan noticed about me early on.
G-Man, jump up behind the wheel. You're gonna drop me and Nurse Shelby here off at Outpost Omega, and then head back to The Sanctuary when the rest of the boys come by after finishing up here.
Fartin' Frankie, c'mere and take shotgun. We're gonna ride in the crew cab.
Sure, it'll be a little tight for me, but that's OK. Gives me an excuse to be close to Shelby, and use the ride to the outpost to get...closer.
Gentlemen! I want you to make a sweep of this area, in a mile radius. If you run across this rapist crew, take whoever you can alive. I think some payback is in order. Just make sure you're back on the road before sunset, then swing by Outpost Omega so you can pick up G-Man and Frankie.
I'll get on the radio with Negan once I'm there to fill him in on how this all went...and right now, it's all good news.
Don't change that between now and then.
With that, they're moving to follow my orders, and I am turning toward the truck. Opening the passenger door, and then the extended crew cab door, I look back down on Shelby's pretty face.
Then I'm smiling again with all the gentlemanly charm I can muster, which is quite a fucking bit.
Ms. Shelby.
I release her hand, and the look on her face when I do that is priceless. Fuck, but she's a sweet lil damsel in distress, ain't she?
Relax. Trust me.
My left hand now slides up her back, up under her soft, dark hair, to wrap long, strong fingers around the nape of her neck...and I can't help but lick my lips at how delicious she feels in my grip.
I widen my stance, shift my hips, and lower my right shoulder...so that when my forearm slides against the backs of her knees, where the flesh is SO delicate and sensitive, it has the desired effect of making her knees weak...buckling...and I'm lifting her, with the backs of her thighs near her bare ass resting along the meat and cords of my forearm, as I steady her neck and head with my left hand.
She's up and on the seat before she knows what's happened...she's so light, and obviously willing to be handled...and then I've released her. The worn, black leather is probably warm, nearing hot...but she needs that...her skin was so cool, almost cold, wherever I touched her...I'm afraid she's nearly in shock over all that's happened to her today.
I'm no nurse, but I know a thing or two about first aid. And trauma. And the human body, in general.
I continue to smile as I grab either side of the door frame, and put my right foot up on the running board.
Scoot all the way over to the door, and make room for me, Shelby.
The outpost is about a half hour from here, and that puts it about a half hour from The Sanctuary. It was our first one, and it's well within what is now our territory. It was my idea to name the first one with the last letter of the Greek alphabet, because I thought it would always be the last place we'd stop before making it home. Negan is full of great ideas, but he really digs it when I have a good one. I'm not really an idea man, but I'm smart and tough, and a good leader...so the ideas I have are just gravy.
Taking Shelby as my own, though, will probably be my best idea, ever.
Yeah, I've got over a dozen markers with The Man. He'll probably give me shit about it, but I'm willing to trade them all in for this gem.
A half hour, and then I'll have her all to myself.
I may even dismiss the skeleton crew we've got set up at Omega, and send them back home with the guys when they get there.
I think I want to be alone with Shelby.
I want to see if things are going to click with her, and I might as well strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.
And damn...she IS hot!

And for the top 5, I’m sending your ask right back at you! =D Top 5 (or 500) pieces of video game music!
HAHAHA EVERYTHING YOU DO IN LIFE COMES BACK TO YOUOK HERE YOU GO, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER (except alphabetical per game lol)

Assassin’s Creed III:-Main Theme-Ratohnhaké:tonThe Liberation soundtrack was also amazing, I could listen to the Main Theme for days.

Final Fantasy IV:-the goddamn opening of the Nintendo DS remake
Final Fantasy VI:-Terra’s Theme

Ocarina of Time:-Lost Woods-Windmill Hut (aka the Song of Storms)-Gerudo Valley
The Wind Waker:-Dragon Roost Island-Molgera’s boss fight theme

(I think it’s called Hardcore to the Brain?) I actually never played that thing, but I watched my sister (who’s super fond of the game!) for like 90% of the plot I think.
…Would you believe that this a selectionI… I’ll better not go into movie soundtracks*faints*

Chapter Forty-three Girl time Graduation Prep
" You will save a fortune on shampoo." " I will be cooler this summer." " You will save a ton of time on hair care." Beth and I lay across my bed taking a break from school work and listing all the positives of my bald head. " I got another one, you will have a smooth tan line from your neck up." We both cracked up at that one and roll around the bed laughing. " We really need to get back to english." I say when I can talk again. So we reluctantly reach for our books and get back to work. We work diligently for a while then Beth says," I have missed you." " Huh? You've seen me almost everyday." " Yes, but even when it is just us your attention is divided." " Oh, but I really can't help that." " I know and I am beyond happy you have found your other half. I just miss my best friend." " I will always be here for you you know. Just like you've been for me." " Yes I know. I love you sis." " I love you too." Graduation is in two weeks. Abe, Julia, and Josiah are graduating. Josiah needs to concentrate on finals and other graduation preparation. He really does. But as he sits studying for his business admit final, his thoughts keep drifting across town to the girl who is studying with Beth. " Focus." he orders himself. He knows that her future is tied up with his. He needs to make sure that future is secure. With that thought at the front of his mind he's able to study. " We need to throw our graduates a graduation party." Beth says as they finish and pack up their books. " Yes we do." "Let's go down to the party store and see what they have before they are all out of everything. Graduation is only 2 weeks away.' " Wow! With me not being there I didn't realize it was so close." " Yep. In two weeks they will be graduating." As they get in Beth's car and drive off Sarah thinks," Two weeks and then one last summer. After Julia is going off to college in Florida. Abe is going local but will be living on campus. Josiah is going to the local tech school to finish the early childhood development and business courses. Two weeks and the group won't be the same." " We have to make this the best summer ever." Sarah says with feeling. " Yes we do." They reach the party store and buy banners and balloons, plates, cups, and napkins all in the school colors of blue and white. " Okay. Graduation is on May 20th on Friday. So let's do it on Saturday the 21st." Beth says. They spend the next few hours planning. The next two weeks fly by. Sarah spends them sick and exhausted. It feels like a permanent state of being to her. She has good days, every Sunday that she sits in the pew between her daddy and Josiah. The time spent planning the party with Beth. When the group all gets together to discuss summer plans. And of course, every second she spends with Josiah. Everyone else spends the 2 weeks doing finals. Beth finishes on the 17th and spent the next three days sitting with Sarah while she does treatments. By the 18th they are all done, they have their graduation caps and gowns. Invitations to the party are all sent out. Sarah gets a bandana with the school colors for graduation. That day she has a treatment then comes home to rest. She tried to talk them out of giving her a treatment that day but they wouldn't let her skip it. So she lays on a couch with Beth beside her praying she won't get sick at Josiah and the others graduation. Josiah paces across his room thinking about the fact that in a few short hours he is going to be a high school graduate. It seems just a few short years ago that he had met Sarah in kindergarten. He could still see her and pigtails and the pinfore dress. Now he is graduating and planning a future with her. If it hadn't been for the fact that he had skipped a grade he would be graduating with her next year. In the midst of his thoughts, his mom and dad walk through the door. "I can't believe my boy is ready to graduate." His momma comments. " I was just thinking the same thing." he tells her. " Your mom and I have something for you." His dad says handing him a small square box. He removes the lid and exposes a very cool watch. " Wow! Thanks guys." " We are so proud of you son. We are proud of the man you have become, the way you take care of Sarah and support her dad. We couldn't ask for a better son." says his dad. " When I found out I was pregnant with you, I started praying for the person you were going to be. I I prayed that you would be a blessing in the world and for the person God would put in your life to complete you. I stand here today sitting all my prayers answered." His momma says with feeling. He starts to cry then and his momma and daddy wrap their arms around him. Sarah, Beth, and Tim walk into the auditorium and find a seat near the front and near the bathrooms. Her daddy will be joining them soon. " How do you feel Sarah?" A concerned Tim asks her. "Not too bad Tim. I am weak but my stomach is pretty stable." " Okay cool. I brought some cloths just in case you need them." " Ahh thanks. I love you Tim." " I love you Sarah." When her daddy joins them, she leans against him. " Are you going to make it baby girl?" " I am." She responds with determination. When the familiar music starts, he helps her stand up and Tim supports her other side. As they march in, Sarah searches for the three familiar faces. She finds them mainly because they were all wearing pink ribbon pins on their gowns. They then sit down and listen to several speeches, the choir then sings the school song, and a prayer is said. Throughout it all, Sarah leans on her daddy fighting to stay awake. The Valedictorian speaks and then the name start being called. Sarah sits thanking God for the fact her school is small with only 55 graduating. They are called in alphabetical order so Julia Carrol was the first from the group, next was Abe Evans, and finally Josiah Greene. Their friends and family clapped and cheered loudly for each of them. When it was over, with the help of her daddy and Tim, she stumbles out to find her graduates. Josiah stands with his parents. When he saw her, her he runs to her side. " Sarah! You look like you're about to fall over." He says as he reaches her side and slides her into the strength of his arms. " Is she okay?" A very concerned Rachel asked. " She had a treatment today. As you know they knock her out but we couldn't keep her away today." Her daddy answers. Josiah shakes his head and lift her up into his arms. " Guys, I'm taking her home." " Wait Josiah." She weakly says," I want to see Julia and Abe." " Okay, my love." He walks through the crowds searching for their friends. After he finds them and Sarah congratulates them, he heads back to his truck. He set her down, buckled her in, and pulled out. By the time he leaves the parking lot she is asleep. The next day, the day of the party, Beth will let her do nothing. She enlists Tim and Mr Rose to help as Sarah drifts in and out of sleep on the couch. Beth wakes her in time to dress. She helps her upstairs. They are wearing dresses in the school colors. Beth wears blue and Sarah white. Sarah also wears the blue and white bandana she wore to graduation. Beth paints her nails blue and white, they do each other's makeup. They are ready. The doorbell rings and they hear Mr Rose answer it. " Can you make it downstairs?" Beth asked. " Yes I think so." They head downstairs and join their friends. Josiah walks into the room and searches for Sarah. He finds her sitting on a chair by the stereo. " Josiah. can you come help me pick out the next CD?" He walks over to the her and says," What are the choices?" " I am thinking Third Day or Mercyme." " Go with Third Day." When they planned the party, they had decided to use it as a witness to the non-Christian kids that were coming so therefore only Christian music. " How are you Sarah?" He asked after the music starts. " I am weak but not sick today so that's good." " Yes it is. You didn't try to do too much today, did you?" " I did none of it. Beth wouldn't let me." " Good for Beth." He is relieved. He takes her hands lifting her up in his arms. He turns her around to face the room and whispers," Thank you for this." " You're welcome but you should also thank Beth and Tim." " I will. Are you up for greeting our guests?" " Yes." In the strength of his arms, they headed to the midst of the party.

There's Only One You 2024: a sports rpf short fanworks prompt meme is live!
262 fanworks in 12 different sports rpf fandoms. Check out the works and the fandoms and grab a cup of coffee 'cause it's just banger after banger across fandoms!
Thank you everyone for your hard work in making this another wonderful year! It is a joy to do this with you again. Your enthusiasm and joie de vivre make all the logistical stuff worthwhile.
Creators - make sure you update the posting date on your works to today so it appears at the top of the tag, especially if you posted weeks ago! Your names will be revealed on Monday, April 8 between 9am-10am pt (unless your work is also in anonymous collection.)
Everyone - if you enjoyed a work, slam that kudos button and leave a comment! Short works do not get nearly enough attention in fandom and these creators worked hard - let them know what you loved about their work! And I'll emphasize that doubly for the podficcers, artists, and fanmixers here, because those are also creators that don't see a lot of praise even beyond short fics. tl;dr: kudos + comment if you liked it!
Thank you all!! Settle in for a good weekend because we've got a lot to enjoy here 🌞
