veilguard spoilers regarding a josie romance. but can we talk about the letter josie sends to a romanced inquisitor because. i’m sorry. fucking losing my mind at the fact that the inquisitor and josephine are close enough friends with the guy the inquisitor duels in her romance to be invited to meet his third child. implying they’ve been invited to the other two. at a baby shower and getting introduced as the one who dueled the baby’s father because he was trying to steal your girl. antivan romances insane.
NO LITERALLLYYYYY. AND HE’S AN IN LAW. ITS TOO FUNNY. i cannot imagine how they met and how yvette probably was like “teehee…. the man that my sister spurned…. has fallen in love with ME!” and the best/worst part is that ortranto really has. i like to think of them running around with each other and secretly meeting as though their families actually hate each other (they really don’t lol) . the ortrantos would probably be delighted to have their son actually marry a montilyet like they wanted, even better that they’re actually in love and it’s not arranged!
i have this image of josie going like “you can’t marry him. is this a joke, because it’s not funny. i almost embarrassed him! the only reason the ortrantos do not hate us is because he is a very kind man who saw that i was in love with the inquisitor! ….yes i suppose a very kind man like that could love you…….. yes of course i want you to be happy…… yvette gabrielle montilyet, i fear you are not hearing what i’m saying— DON’T SAY YOU ARE ALREADY AN ORTRANTO. DID YOU ELOPE? ah okay. don’t do that. i said don’t do that. yvette come back and listen to me” etc etc
of course i must believe that there was a big scene caused (once again) by a montilyet and ortranto that ends with lord ortranto making a speech where the publicly declares his love for yvette in front of all of antiva city to see and hear. so there’s no backing out from this one. in my mind there’s a rehash of the big “BECAUSE I LOVE HER!” (ortranto, desperate but genuine), “you do?” (completely aghast josie who has somehow missed the fact her sister has been giggling even more than usual), plus an “OF COURSE HE DOES!” (a thrilled yvette) that reminds josie so fondly of her own love story that she's immediately relaxed (and suddenly accepting) about this whole thing <3
#josie to me also feels more awkward than she lets on because she's quite good at being graceful and kind#but he is kind of. you know. the guy she rejected in front of val royeaux#i think the most out of character thing is that josie doesnt notice her sister and ortranto meeting up and falling in love etc#but i also think she can be busy enough being an ambassador/running the family business/eldest daughter#that she somehow misses it. for the sake of this beautiful idea i have. and also it would be cute and funny <3#also like the image of yvette saying ‘i’m getting married to adorno!’ and inq is like yeah ok :] congrats!#later asks josie like ‘oh yeah. who was the guy ur sister is marrying’ and josie pauses thinking abt how to say this LOL#this is also how trev finds out ortranto’s first name is adorno. nearly dies laughing over the whole situation i think#he really is like a footnote in her mind where she's like ':/ guy who almost married my beautiful wife' and then almost#without any issue she's able to go like 'GUY WHO IS MY IN LAW. AND WAS REALLY GRACIOUS ABOUT THE WHOLE ARRANGED MARRIAGE THING.#HE'S QUTE COOL ACTUALLY!' <- and has no issue about ortranto after this#much to josie's amusement and exasperation <3#josephine montilyet#adorno ortranto#yvette montilyet#not to mention josie's unseen brothers. they do intrigue me#the idea of either of them kind of finding out their youngest sister is running around with ortranto they probably sighed in relief like#yeah we can distract josephine with this. that will get her off my back about marriage for about a year.#even more if theyre planning the wedding!#evelyn trevelyan#<- mentioned briefly. i guess#veilguard spoilers#for a codex entry but when i saw it i did melt. everyone deserves to experience this firsthand#long post

Excuse the format (I made this for instagram since that's what the publisher wants, rip) but this is basically a shorter, easy-to-read version of the history section at the back of my new book. (Part 1 || The book)
More about my relationship with queer history (& section 28) under the cut
Looking up history to make a fun queer historical rom-com opened my eyes to how my entire idea of the past in this country was way off.
It also made me realise that part of the reason queer history felt like such new, revelatory information was a law that banned it, which was still in place when I was at school.
Section 28 was put in place by Margaret Thatcher in the 80s, banning "promotion of homosexuality" in UK schools and local authorities. Local libraries were forbidden from stocking anything with LGBT content, and it effectively stopped teachers mentioning any queer history, leaving them scared to even accidentally mention a same-sex partner.
-
just want to add a quote from that article:
Tumblr media
legends.
-
Although the law was finally repealed in the 00s, it cast a long shadow. Older teachers were used to it, history books conformed to it, and new teachers still feared homophobic backlash.
Today there's a huge and disturbing rise in anti-trans rhetoric and legislation being attempted in schools and beyond, and it mirrors the homophobic conversations of the 80s. The truth that we've always been here gets met with vitriol - and to be honest, also just outright surprise even by well-intentioned, otherwise widely-read cis and straight people I know, especially in older generations.
I feel like there's also the flipside: once I listened to a podcast where two american women, older than me, were both SHOCKED that anyone was ever executed in Britain for being gay?? For me the threat of execution (before 1824), exile or imprisonment (the two years of hard labour that famously lead to the death of Oscar Wilde) were the main, only things I grew up aware of about queer history.
At best, the queer history I saw growing up was absolute tragedy. Part of what was such a revelation when researching was reading historical accounts that hint at hidden queer histories, secret joys and long, complex lives.
So by the time I finished researching my historical romance book, I'd decided to make an illustrated history section at the back too - these pics are a mini version.
I wish more people knew about the real history we have and how far back it goes - I hope someone unfamiliar might be able to get get a tiny introduction, and recs for ways to get a clearer view of our past.

Lady Glinda Upland of the Arduennas, formerly known as Glinda the Good Witch, spent the beginning of her career as a mouthpiece for the now-controversial Wizard of Oz, then transitioned to civil service after his abrupt departure in the wake of the Wicked Witch of the West’s death. During her long and illustorious career, she has championed Animal rights, campaigned for retributions for those affected by the Quadling Uprisings, and collaborated with the Vinkan people to improve infrastructure in their homeland. Her marriage to Lord Chuffrey produced no children. Famously private, the early years of Lady Glinda’s life and career are shrouded in rumor and speculation, innuendo and outuendo. She has notably refused to speak about her connection to the Wicked Witch of the West.
Until now.
On the eve of her retirement, Lady Glinda sends an invitation to a young, struggling writer.
To hear the entire story.
To know the whole truth.
Canon Divergence AU (loosely) based on The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (AO3 link here). Galinda Upland/Elphaba Thropp. Work in progress (currently around 20k words and 5 chapters).

O Come, O Come
Carnahan House, Buckinghamshire, Christmas Eve 1944
Shortly after the events of “A Homecoming”
After the party, while the Land Girls and Mrs. Bythall cleaned up and the teachers shepherded their students to bed, Evie and Alex made Rick and Jonathan a late dinner in the kitchen. There was plenty of food left over, carefully put away by Mrs. Bythall, roast beef and potatoes and string beans and all that. Waste not, want not, after all, especially now. After several moments of being left hanging with food on spoons, Alex took the plates from his mother, rolling his eyes a little: Evie couldn’t seem to let go of Rick, bending over him, touching his arms and shoulders, and smiling like the sun all the while.
Alex didn’t begrudge his mother her joy. He knew that his father would die a natural death of old age–Lady Isis promised him that, when he gave her back the Magic Words after that near-disaster in Peru–but it had been extremely worrying to see his mum fretting and sad. For the past couple of days, ever since that damned telegram, she’d been a wreck, wandering around the house with a lost, worried expression, unable to focus on anything, carrying the paper angel from Rick’s last letter in one hand. But now she had transformed into the mum he was used to, happy and laughing, and Alex breathed a sigh of relief. Sometimes he thought that his parents’ love for each other was a little terrifying. He wasn’t sure he was brave enough to love someone that deeply. He’d seen what the loss of it, even temporarily, had done to his parents. But enough of such thoughts.
“Did you meet Dr. Jones?” he asked, setting plates of meat and veg before his dad and his uncle.
Rick and Jonathan both groaned.
