I'm back with more demigod dead boy detectives (parts one and two for those interested)! In short, Edwin is a son of Athena (born at the turn of the 20th century) who spent seventy years in the fields of punishment by accident - after he escaped it was 1989 and most of the gods had moved to America of all places.
And despite all that, St Hilarion was still functioning as a demigod heaven. Edwin is not happy. At all.
Charles on the other hand is having an interesting time all around. The backstory for him that I came up with starts from before he was born. The OG pjo au that I read had his father be Ares and yes?! I adore the Frank Zang of him?
But his mom and Ares didn't click in my mind until I realized that Ares is in an on-and-off relationship with Aphrodite - who is cutting and sharp and tough but also soft and ditsy and a bit shallow. His past lovers don't all need to be veterans or kickboxers. It was an eureka moment, to be honest.
Charles' mom (name still in the works) met Ares in a museum showcasing ancient pottery and jewelry - some of them Greek - most of which depicted old heroic tales or bore the scars of the years. They started talking completely by chance - Aphrodite had stood Ares up and he didn't feel like going back to what he was doing. He decided to check this collection out - to reminisce or to try and remember fallen friends. Or just to sulk. Either way, he was there.
Charles's future mom sees him and the conflicting aesthetic of his clothing and the display he was looking at makes her want to talk with him. They hit it off. He asks to see her again and the rest is history.
They are together for four months before she gets pregnant. As expected from a god, Ares disappears from her life with only a few words. Charles's mom is left alone with a baby, in a shitty apartment with no family in the country.
It sucks. Like a lot.
Then she meets Paul Richard Rowland.
(I'm sorry but I can't do Paul's name dirty in a pjo au, I just can't. Although the irony was amusing enough to make me consider it for a whole second.)
They hit it off even with the occasionally crying baby in the next room. Soon they are engaged to be married - and married soon afterward. Charles's last name is changed and would you look at that - a happy family.
Not.
Charles is a charming and athletic boy with a love for ska and a bit of a temper. His dad is a cunt and his mom is quiet. That's fine until it isn't.
In an argument, it gets out that Richard isn't Charles's actual father (he is 14 when that happens). Stuff gets progressively worse after that (both with Richard and with the monsters - Richard's whole "something is wrong with you" really drives in the "I am different" mindset you really don't want in an untrained demigod) until Charles' mom gets desperate and contacts the boarding school - Ares had assured her that it would always have a spot for Charles.
(The phone number is that of the school board of all the still functioning demigod establishments. Had Charles been a girl they would have referred the mom to one of the all-girls or mixed schools. It's a system run by descendants, wind spirits and satyrs.)
((It's not as efficient as say sending satyrs to schools, but they only have so many satyrs. They do the guardian routine! Honest!))
Fast forward and Charles has been to St Hil for almost a year and a half. He is a semi-full-year camper in the sense he went home once for one summer and then only for two to three days a year.
He gets along with his siblings and the cricket team. He is friendly and nice but 80s racism and classist bullshit exist - he can't be too vocal with his thoughts and opinions less he is ostracized by his peers, he has to play a role he only has half the script of. The demigod thing isn't always a blessing.
He is a deft hand with daggers and knives, he is skilled with a sword - but he would prefer to play cricket or go to concerts. No magical barrier means nightly patrols and the occasional monster attack.
Cue the death scene. It plays like canon but with weapons. He is chased into the freezing lake by his siblings and his former mates. (And Charles had been so excited about having siblings - but this - they - he couldn't call brothers.)
There aren't any naiads during the winter - or they are sleeping deep into it. No one intervenes. He manages to escape his pursuers by going deeper into the woods until he comes across an old shed.
Charles goes in.
(He didn't hear the sharp snap of twigs and branches in the other direction of the one he was going. He didn't notice the second pair of footsteps shadowing his own.)
((He does see the lantern.))
And they finally meet. Isn't it grand? (TBC)
#dead boy detectives#edwin payne#charles rowland#demigod au#pjo au#honestly this is what I have so far because I don't think a lotus shopping centre is a thing that can exist#dbd au#but also ares has a soft spot for sharp women that can make him laugh and i will die on this hill#they went on the cutsiest dates#his rude remarks made [insert name here] laugh so hard#like mother like son#charles being mistaken for an apollo kid when he got to the school#also [i really need a name i won't call her mary] knew Ares as Asher#since there are no cabins it's more like houses#but it's mainly different dorms#there is a huge - not as big as when edwin went there - unclaimed room that fits like 10 people in it#have you ever went hiking to those high enough peaks that the only place you can sleep is a shared room for 12?#yeah like those

“Her whole activism era started because Joe was an activist. He didn’t stop it after the breakup because it's a part of his personality, he still signed the ceasefire letter. But Taylor didn’t utter a single word about genocide, she's busy learning football and crying about how oppressed she is in her billionaire lifestyle. And somehow she is the Person of the Year in Times magazine.” 👏👏👏 you couldn’t have said that better.
activism is a vocation imo. it’s not just something ppl pick up like a habit then discard once it’s no longer. millions of people have died because they’re activists. most of the time, their families and loved ones don’t even get to bury them because their bodies are forever lost due to the people they’re standing up to. that’s why when i see celebrities (here taylor swift) use activism as an aesthetic, as an era, as a brand—it literally makes me sick. it’s vile and cruel and a huge slap to the face of true activists who dedicated their whole life to the causes they believe in.
i began to detach myself from her back in the og 1989 era after being a fan since i was a little girl bc there was just something off that i couldn’t put my finger on. then i got back into her during folklore/evermore bc i was shocked to see the growth and maturity in her lyrics. after her & joe broke up, i detached again because i began to see the old vindicative taylor who weaponized her real experience of misogyny and bullying. then, the whole ttpd. which i can only say what the actual fuck was that?
she regressed both in maturity, personality and creativity. wonder what societal and political issue she’s going to make her new aesthetic on the next album. so far, lgbt + mental health + misogyny are off the list. lol

The lonely city girl aesthetic is very iconic BUT I don’t mind the beachification of 1989 bc all of the previous tv covers have just taken elements from the existing covers:
Fearless is Taylor whipping her hair over a gold background, Fearless tv is Taylor whipping her hair with a gold filter
Red is Taylor in a hat looking away from the camera, Red tv is Taylor in a hat looking away from the camera (albeit with more of her face showing, just like 1989 tv, but I take that as part of the “taking ownership” symbolism)
Speak Now is a 3/4ths view of Taylor in a purple dress, Speak Now tv is a 3/4ths view of Taylor in a purple dress
1989 is Taylor standing in front of a blank wall in a seagull sweatshirt with a handwritten title, 1989 tv is Taylor standing in front of a clear sky with seagulls in the background and a handwritten title (both in the style of a polaroid). Sure, she could’ve gone the Speak Now tv route and just recreated the original polaroid but the og cover didn’t exactly scream New York either. I think she played with the cover as much as she could while keeping it 1. as similar to the original as the other tv covers 2. instantly recognizable AND distinct from the original
+ the original city imagery came with the tour and polaroids, and if the tv polaroid sneak peeks are to be believed they’re just outtakes from the original city photoshoot, so the city will still come into play! Peace and love on planet earth
#also there’s enough beach/water imagery and ‘escaping the city’ talk in the lyrics and music videos of that era that it really didn’t catch#me off guard#also this is NOT @ anyone I have takes all over the place on my dash from my beloved mutuals#but this is why I’m just like whatever about it#taylor swift#1989 tv

it may just be me but I think the beach theme for the 1989 rerelease was plan b and that's why it looks so bizarre given the albums nyc inspiration. to me it was originally gonna have the same vibe as the og album, the clincher was gonna be taylor dating matty along with having her so called "girl squad" back together to really sell that 2014 nostalgia back to zeillennials in particular who would've been teens at the time. but they didn't count on the severe public backlash from taylor dating matty so she had to quietly ditch him & they had to restructure the 1989 release aesthetic. also to probably distance the album from the 1975 as a band as well, since they did dominate a pretty substantial part of the musical landscape at that time, and back then she & the band were mentioned together often so her team probably didn't want that link to be so prominent again and potentially impact this rerelease the way it impacted the sntv release. I think it was always a loosely prepared option because taylor is pathologically obsessed with her image & definitely feels like the type to have contingency plans for her contingency plans

Pls elaborate on why you think certain outfits weren’t shown if you can 🙏
Og 1989 outfits, they were heavy and due to the slits on the skirt, it was hard to align them in the way that looked professional, Og surprise song dress, the double sleeves were hard to put on in the dark.
Purple folklore, I remember a video of the august run in said dress and it looked like it was *too* easy to accidentally grab too much fabric and lead to a wardrobe malfunction
Tissue paper dress: heavy, hot, just did not sit right or match the aesthetic
Those are my main opinions, but I think the overall gist is that over the tour she wanted to keep wardrobe malfunctions at a minimum, and also she wanted that ass to be bejeweled at the very same time

i like the city aesthetic but as someone who lives in a city the og 1989 aesthetic is missing the crucial detail of gigantic rats about the size of a cat that hiss at you -ebd anon
wdym? og 1989 era and 1989 tv era have both had the presence of matty healy

There’s a brand of [largely new] swifties who genuinely aren’t satisfied with anything and it’s so fucking annoying.
They hated midnights. They hate Jack and blame him for any songs they don’t like even the ones he wasn’t fucking involved in. They begged for 1989 TV to come out only to say the vault tracks sucked when it did, and also proclaim she obviously wrote them for midnights which explains why they “sucked.” They were already chanting for rep tv at her show two weeks later. They think the TTPD song titles are corny and don’t fit the ~aesthetic~ they’ve made up in their heads for what the album is going to be. They’re still begging for the rep tv announcement during a new album release cycle, but I guarantee when she does release it all we’ll hear about is how the cover art sucks compared to the original and the production is all wrong and Jack should be drawn and quartered for what he did to [Insert Rep TV song that sounds exactly same as the OG]. And then two weeks later they’ll be clowning for debut TV, because they care more about Easter eggs than they do the music.
It’s getting exhausting.
#nobody has to like everything she does that’s not what I’m saying#but when you hate literally every move she makes and everything she releases doesn’t measure up to the idea of it in your head#maybe it’s time to reassess being a fan#taylor swift#ts

The black and white tik tok mashup of 1989 tv that Taylor posted. I know that’s her aesthetic for TTPD, but it’s also so significant to Haylor. Harry changed his entire Instagram to black and white after 1989 og. 💀
😯 my delulu brain is going so many places lol

Okay. I like the 1989tv cover. But its not polaroid-esque 😭😭 like. Wheres the marker style at the bottom? I hope reptv cover isnt as messed up with or else idk. i dont know how ill survive that apocalypse.
my hot take is that i prefer the 1989 og cover to the 1989 tv cover. its beautiful, dont get me wrong - taylor smiling, the seagulls, its a vision! it just doesnt give... 1989. it gives forced beach aesthetic.
as you know, i'm like. the #1 rep girlie. and if taylor fucks up the rep tv cover, i fear i'll cease to EXIST
