It is actually extremely important to me that y'all understand the importance of the talent show subplot to the structure of ofmd being not just a gay romcom but a story fiercely thematically opposed to toxic masculinity and amatonormativity; how Ed the Emo crying into his blanket fort and silk gown writing sad boy poetry music is the most emotionally healthy he's ever been and a hairsbreadth away from sustained happiness.
Which is a hard sell with Stede still playing house and straight man a million lightyears and then one (1) rowboat trip away, but I swear the reason that Ed has this subplot instead of disappearing for twenty minutes of B-plot about mutinying against Izzy only to swan in as The Kraken at the end is because Our Flag Means Death correctly believes with its whole big gay pirate heart that Ed doesn't need Stede to be happy.
I mean they're still going to get together; this is a romcom, barring the show coming down with an unexpected and uncharacteristic cancerous case of historical accuracy and kills them within eighteen days of each other. But aside from that Ed and Stede will get together, it will just be because they want to not because they have to.
Like. There's this phenomenon in romcoms that mythologizes romance as The One True Solution. The Panacea that solves all problems. Not going around naming names but like. imagine a show called something like. """ Tunneltown""" as an alternate history where the power of love Solved Racism.
But Our Flag Means Death makes it very clear; the reason Ed is unhappy, now and at the beginning of the show, has nothing to do with his relationship status. If that were true, the Kraken would have showed up Ed's first second of screentime post rejection. Instead he enters the finale rejected and single and miserable and he almost made it out fine.
Ed spends the episode reciting terrible songs to terrible pirates who, in part because of the lessons they learned from Stede, receive this with awkward but sincere acceptance. When Ed is vulnerable, with Lucius and with the crew, he is answered with sympathy and understanding and an eager proposition to throw a talent show because the crew is happy to be emotional and vulnerable too!
He was in eyeing distance of the finish line! That's why it's a tragedy! He almost made it through the storm!
And everyone jokes about how comical it is that the crew gets tricked into thinking that there's going to be a talent show but it makes sense on every level that they would believe it! They've been sailing with Ed for how long, of course they trust him. Of course they feel they've established a relationship with open communication and trust and emotional honesty, they just had the entire singing deck scene to prove it to each other.
And the idea of a pirate talent show is ludicrous when set opposite the tone and events of the end of season, but it isn't any more crazy than a pirate flag crafting competition or a pirate crashing a fancy dinner, both things that ended happily for everyone! This subplot ending happily is explicitly endorsed as feasible within the internal logic of the show!
Ed has a community full of other queer and gender nonconforming people, he is able to get better because he can lean on Lucius.
Ed isn’t perma-broken, he’s getting over a break up! He puts in his time crying on the couch with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and sobbing onto a sympathetic shoulder and then he starts heading towards a night of partying it up on the town hanging out with his supportive friends. What knocks him off course is the rearing of Ed's real problems: toxic masculinity and Izzy Fucking Hands.
Even rejected, Ed has stepped out of his toxic masculine persona, the persona he created to protect himself, because even gone Stede created a lasting emotionally supportive and safe environment for Ed to do so.
Izzy, who viciously stabs at this newly exposed soft underbelly. Izzy who forcibly reminds Ed that the price for breaking toxically masculine gender roles, to express feelings of romance or pain, is to open yourself up to be hurt by those gatekeepers like Izzy who worshiped him when he was in character.
Ed's relationship with Stede isn't valuable because of romance, but because Stede creates spaces for Ed to be himself. To be gender nonconforming and to have feelings, and those spaces exist independent of Stede's presence or reciprocation.
