I guess what I like the most its the ability to capture a moment. It's the ability to stop time. Because sometimes moments can get too big for us. You know, we get scared, and we run. We fold. We do the wrong thing. We say the wrong thing, and then just like that, the moment has passed. So I guess I just like having the ability to just pause a moment forever in the hopes of the impossibility of just getting back to it. [ eat ] for your muse to offer mine food

Eggs are very hard to cook. They aren’t supposed to be. Someone, Connor maybe, told Grey this would be easy.

Before Blackrock they hadn’t eaten a lot of cooked eggs. They had them with Lance, of course. They remember watching him, peering over the edge of his stove as he cooked fat slices of bacon and bright yellow eggs in a skillet. He’d made it look easy. Diego makes it look easy too, every morning, like clock-work.

But Diego probably won’t like this egg, Grey thinks, poking at what they can only really describe as soggy ash. They dump it. It’s not even edible by their standards. That’s how bad it is. And they start again. 

Diego always makes them breakfast. He makes breakfast for everyone in the pack, every single day. Today, someone is going to make breakfast for him.

But that person might not be Grey. 

They bite their lip, carefully tapping the egg on the table until it cracks and then slowly, surgically, they separate the two halves of the egg so that the albumin and yolk spill out onto the pan. This time they start the egg in a cold pan. The first egg had ignited upon touching the pan and had turned to ash before Grey had the chance to stir it. This time it will be different.

It is different, but not in a good way. The egg cooks perfectly, white on the outside and orange in the middle, but when Grey tries to pick it up on the spatula it won’t come off the pan. They end up having to scrape it off into the sink before it burns. 

It will be alright, they tell themselves, this time it was better. Next time, it’ll be perfect.

In several hours, when the sun slowly pushes its way over the horizon, Diego will wake and exit his room to find a plate with two perfectly toasted and buttered slices of bread on it. When he enters the kitchen he will find it devoid of eggs and plagued by a lingering burnt smell that will stick to the walls for most of the day. Grey will be nowhere in sight.
