Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew - Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash, and Captain Dallas - are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.

The Outsiders incorrect quotes because I'm bored
o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
Dally: Legend says that when you can’t sleep, it means you’re awake in someone else’s dreams.
Dally, a raging insomniac: When I find out who you are, I’m going to kick your ass.
...
Darry: Yesterday, Ponyboy told me that when he was a kid and had nightmares of being chased by monsters, he would end the dream by finding me because I would protect him by fighting off the monsters or carrying him away. The funny thing is that when I was a kid, I remember constantly having nightmares where I had to save him from monsters.
Darry: ... I'm torn between thinking it's sweet and being annoyed that he somehow mastered the ability to psychically transfer his nightmares to me as a child
...
Ponyboy: Name a more iconic duo than my crippling fear of abandonment and my anxiety. I’ll wait.
Johnny: You and me?
Ponyboy: *tearing up* Ok.
...
Two-Bit: You know what I’ve realized?
Steve: That some thoughts are better left unsaid?
Two-Bit: Nice try, anyways-
...
Darry: You're smiling, what happened?
Ponyboy: What? Can't I smile just because I feel like it?
Soda: Steve tripped and fell down the stairs today.
...
Steve: You played me!
Soda, cheating at poker: Like the cheap kazoo you are!
...
Ponyboy: Can I have some water?
Byron: *starts chugging his water bottle*
Byron: *chokes from drinking too fast*
Byron: *spills water all over himself*
Byron, coughing: I don't have any water.
...
Random person at the church: How many children do you have?
Mrs. Curtis: Biologically or emotionally? Because there's a big difference.
...
Curly: *gets a text* Oh! It’s Tim.
Ponyboy: Did he get the stuff?
Curly: Yeah, he says he got us the clown costume, the power drill, and 12 gallons of blood.
Ponyboy: Whoa! Where’d he find 12 gallons of fake blood?
Curly: You wanted fake blood?
Ponyboy: ...
Curly: I’ll go call Tim
...
Soda: You can take away my rights, but can you take away my lefts?
...
Johnny: Dally and I were crossing the street, and this soc drove by and honked at us
Darry, sighing: What did he do?
Johnny: he chased him to the next red light, then reached into his window and...
Dally, grinning: Who wants a steering wheel?
...
Bob: I came out here to attack people and I'm honestly having such a good time right now.
Bob: *gets stabbed a minute later* Fuck.
...
Curly: FIGHT ME, YOU NERD ASS PUNK!
Angela: At least try to sound slightly more sophisticated when you threaten someone.
Curly: Oh, I'm sorry. I should ask; dost thou want to engage in a duel, my good bitch?
Angela: Somehow that's even worse.
...
Soda: What’s the dumbest thing you believed as a kid?
Darry: That naptime was a punishment.
...
Ponyboy: The first time Two-Bit opened a box of Cheerios and looked inside he yelled, "OH WOW! DONUT SEEDS!"
...
Johnny: So I have made the decision to trust you.
Dally: A horrible decision, really.
...
Two-Bit: Who thinks I can fit 15 marshmallows in my mouth?
Darry: You’re a hazard to society
Steve: And a coward. DO TWENTY.
...
*At the police station*
Darry: Hi, I’m here for Dallas.
Police officer: Who’s Dallas?
Darry: Ah, you must be new.
...
Ponyboy: So the other day Darry sent Soda out to get us some gas.
Ponyboy: And instead of getting gas, he got us novelty cookie cutters.
Ponyboy: Now everything we eat is shaped like a dinosaur.
Ponyboy: …
Ponyboy: I love it so much.
...
Angela: I hate when people ask me what sign I am. Bitch, I'm a sign from god. Start running.
...
Buck: What are you writing?
Dally: The fuzz wanna know what kind of weapons we have in the house. I'm letting them know it's private information.
Buck, looking over Dally's shoulder: This just says 'fuck around and find out' in calligraphy.
...
Johnny, having a panic attack: I don't dab. I stab.
...
Steve: Your existence is confusing.
Ponyboy: How?
Steve: Your presence is annoying, but the thought of anything bad happening to you upsets me.
...
Soda: Heads up, if you try to make a candle with food colouring, it will just sink to the bottom of the glass, and when the flame eventually reaches the bottom all the food colouring will catch fire and become one giant tall flame that you cannot possibly blow out and the glass will start to crack and then you'll throw your tea on it in a panic and then the extremely hot food colouring will boil and sizzle horribly and then the glass will shatter.
Darry, sighing: What did you do?
Soda, wailing: A MISTAKE
...
Two-Bit: So what’s for breakfast?
Ponyboy, staring at the eggs all over the walls: Regret.
...
Johnny: "You're an old soul" is just old people speak for "I've noticed you've been depressed since you were 9."
...
Ponyboy: Quick, what's your blood type?
Dally: How would I know?
Ponyboy: How would you not!?
Dally: Who am I, Karl Landsteiner, discoverer of blood groups?
Ponyboy, distressed: You don't know your own blood type, but you know who discovered them?!
...
Curly: *Accidentally punched Ponyboy in the face*
Curly: *Trying to decide between saying 'I’m fucking sorry' and 'Are you okay'*
Curly: ARE YOU FUCKING SORRY?!
Ponyboy, confused: What’s wrong with you?!
Angela: *wheezing in the background*
...
Darry: Can you please be serious for five minutes?
Two-Bit: My record is four, but I think I can do it.
...
Sylvia: Why are you like this??
Dally: I used too much "No More Tears" shampoo as a kid and I haven't felt a single emotion since.
...
Curly: I was arrested for being too tuff.
Tim: The charges were dropped due to a lack of supporting evidence.
...
Ponyboy: Do you think different paints have different tastes?
Soda: They do.
Darry: ... Why did you say that with such certainty?
...
Soda, euphoric from his first date with Sandy: Date someone who will drag you outside at 3am to look at the stars.
Steve: If anyone, and I mean anyone, wakes me up at 3am to go look at the damn sky they will be removed indefinitely from my life.
...
Tim: I have the sharpest memory here - name one time I forgot something!
Curly: You left me in a Walmart parking lot at 2am a day ago.
Tim: I did that on purpose, try again.
...
Dally: *choking on something*
Steve: Jeez, Dal, don't die on us.
Dally: Don't tell me what to do, I'll die whenever the hell I want
...
Angela: You can trust me! Let's not forget who pulled you out of the river when you were six.
Curly, dryly: Let's not forget who pushed me in
...
Dally: I am free of all prejudice. I hate everyone equally.
...
Darry: Don’t say a word.
Ponyboy: Fergalicious.
Darry: Pony, I said no words.
Ponyboy: Oh, I see how it is. Two weeks ago, when we were playing Scrabble, it wasn't a word, now suddenly it is a word because it’s convenient for you.
...
Soda: Steve, you need to react when customers cry!
Steve: I did. I rolled my eyes.
...
Ponyboy: 'Struggling with depression' would seem to imply that I am bad at being depressed when I am, in fact, very proficient at being depressed.
o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
That's it for now lol

And for the first time in hundreds of years, the night came alive with the music of Dire Wolves 🐺 🐺 🐺
Tumblr media
~~~
NOT REALLY . . . .
Despite all the hype, they are just gray wolves with seventeen or eighteen changes in their DNA 🤷‍♀️
But let's talk about about Romulus, Remus and *Khaleesi*
~~~
GRRM CRIED
CBR: How did George R.R. Martin handle meeting the creatures he wrote about? Lamm: I did fly George out to meet the Wolves, and he cried! He completely cried. He said this was like one of the greatest things that he's ever seen.
~~~
WHY KHALEESI?
CBR: Why did you name one of the Dire Wolves after Khaleesi instead of one of the Wolves in the series like Nymeria? Lamm: Well, it's a great question, and the first two were brothers. The show has multiple Wolves in it, one being obviously the most famous, Ghost. But a lot of them have brown fur, and they're shaggy, and there are black ones. But Dire Wolves were white. They mostly look like Ghosts, number one. So we thought, "Do we name the first one Ghost?" But then we didn't feel like that attached them very well together, and if you go back to Greek mythology, and Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, these are like the founders of the extinction of the de-extinction world. And so we felt like Romulus and Remus were good names. In the show, unfortunately, as you know, Lady dies, and so we didn't want to name the first female Lady, because we thought it was a bad omen. So we thought if we named her Khaleesi, you know, obviously, fans of the show and the books would love them. I think the bigger the fans, the more the stars will love them. There are people who are just Hardcore Targaryen fans. So we thought it was an homage to the rest of A Song of Ice and Fire, and we wanted to name her Khaleesi because we wanted to name her Lady. Well, we will probably have another few Dire Wolves in future litters, because we want to get to about 6 to 8 to the right population in their impact dynamics, which we think is about 6 to 8 here. And so we have the first two brothers, and we didn't want one to be named Ghost, because everyone would just talk about Ghost, and no one would talk about the other one. We were trying to be a little bit more diplomatic and fair to the animals, but you can be assured that probably one of the future ones will be named Ghost.
As if Khaleesi were a good omen 🙃
~~~
MATE FOR LIFE?
Lamm says that Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi will not be allowed to breed.
Sorry jonerice 💀

THE IRON THRONE
Tumblr media
[Peter] Jackson — who is an investor in the biotechnology company — loaned Colossal the official touring 330-pound Iron Throne prop that was used in promotions for the Game of Thrones series. Prior to today, it wasn’t known that Jackson owned it, as it sold last year in a bidding war for $1.49 million to a then-undisclosed bidder. For a glam photo shoot, Colossal flew Romulus and Remus to Dallas, Texas, and snapped them lolling on the fictional seat of power.
~~~
GRRM - COLOSSAL BIOSCIENCES INVESTOR
Colossal reached out to Martin after it started work on its dire wolf de-extinction project. Not only did he sign on as a Colossal Biosciences cultural adviser and investor, Martin also flew to meet Romulus and Remus at their private preserve (which Colossal says has been certified by the American Humane Society).
THE JONSA AGENDA 🤭
Still, Colossal’s scientists believe they are on to something powerful. Matt James, the company’s chief animal officer—who once worked as senior director of animal care at the Dallas Zoo and Zoo Miami, where he managed the welfare of 7,000 animals representing 500 species—felt the significance of the science when Romulus and Remus were just 5 or 6 weeks old. The staff was weighing the little pups, and one of the veterinary techs began singing a song from The Little Mermaid. When she reached a point at which she vocalized first up, then down, Romulus and Remus turned her way and began howling in response. “For me,” James says, “it was sort of a shocking, chilling moment.” These pups were the first to produce a howl that hadn’t been heard on earth in over 10,000 years.
There's always a redhead (half fish) making snowy white direwolves howl . . . . 🧜🏻‍♀️ ❤️ 🐺
The Jonsa Agenda is real you all 😎
The Tragic Story of Jeremy Wade Delle: A Reflection on Youth and Mental Health
On January 8, 1991, the halls of Richardson High School in Texas were irrevocably altered by a tragic event that underscored the challenges faced by youth and the critical importance of mental health awareness. Jeremy Wade Delle, a 15-year-old sophomore, took his own life in front of his classmates, leaving a community in shock and a legacy that would resonate far beyond that day.
A Day Like Any Other
The morning commenced like many others, with students arriving at school and settling into their routines. Jeremy, who had recently transferred from Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, was known as a loner—someone who often kept to himself and struggled to connect with his peers. On that fateful day, after arriving late to class, his teacher, Fay Barnett, requested that he retrieve an admittance slip from the office. Instead, Jeremy returned to class with a .357-caliber Magnum.
Walking to the front of the classroom, he uttered the chilling words, “Miss, I got what I really went for,” before taking his life in a moment that would haunt his classmates and teachers indefinitely. The sound of the gunshot reverberated through the school, initially misinterpreted by some as a prank until the grim reality became apparent. Witnesses described the ensuing chaos—a teacher frozen in shock, students screaming, and a community plunged into grief.
The Struggles Behind the Tragedy
In the days following the incident, it became evident that Jeremy had been grappling with significant personal challenges. Reports indicated that he had been in counseling and exhibited sporadic attendance at school. His struggles were further exacerbated by family issues, including his parents' divorce and feelings of isolation in a new school environment.
Jeremy left behind several notes, one of which articulated his feelings of overwhelming pain and a desire to escape his circumstances. He expressed a sense of disconnection and the burdens he carried, revealing a depth of emotional turmoil that many of his peers were unaware of. This poignant message resonated with friends and classmates, who later expressed guilt for not having reached out to him.
The Aftermath and Community Response
The aftermath of Jeremy's death was marked by immediate counseling efforts for the students who witnessed the tragedy. School officials and mental health professionals collaborated to provide support, recognizing that the impact of such an event would be long-lasting. Many students reported feelings of sadness, anxiety, and fear, grappling with the sudden loss of a classmate in such a traumatic manner.
In the wake of the tragedy, Wanda Crane, Jeremy's mother, spoke publicly about her son, emphasizing that his death did not define his life. She remembered him as a talented artist, a caring friend, and a son who faced immense challenges. His artwork, which had garnered recognition even at a young age, adorned the walls of their home—a testament to his creativity and potential.
A Lasting Legacy
The story of Jeremy Wade Delle did not conclude with his untimely death. It inspired the Pearl Jam song "Jeremy," which brought national attention to the issues of youth suicide and mental health. Eddie Vedder, the band’s lead singer, was moved by an article he read about Jeremy, feeling compelled to give voice to his story and the struggles faced by many young people.
This tragic incident served as a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need for improved mental health resources and support systems in schools. It ignited conversations about the importance of recognizing the signs of emotional distress and the necessity of fostering open dialogues about mental health among teenagers.
Conclusion
Jeremy's story serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles that many adolescents endure in silence. As communities continue to confront the consequences of youth suicide, it is essential to cultivate environments where students feel safe to express their feelings and seek help. By prioritizing mental health awareness and support, we can honor Jeremy's memory and work towards preventing future tragedies.
Taming The Football Beast
Dallas van Hoek was one of the starts of the Atlanta Golden Eagles football team. Everyone on campus knew him. He was also a stereotypical jock - partying, fucking random chicks, doing crazy stunts with his teammates and frat bros. Coach liked all that, he wanted all his players to be real men and in that case it meant being a total jock bro.
That is, until Dallas' antics caused his performance on the field to worsen. He was no longer showing up at non mandatory practices, his tackles got a bit easier to avoid, his footwork more sloppy. This angered Coach and pushed him to intervene.
He invited the DB for a meeting in his office. He told him a company that manufactured gear for athletes reached out to the team about a potential partnership and he wanted Dallas to test out their new helmet. The jock took it in his hands, eager to sign his next NIL deal.
The moment he put the helmet on his head, the built-in speakers began blasting a hypnotic track into his ears.
A real jock focuses on his performance on the gridiron
A real bro fights for that W
The tinted visor began displaying images of himself in his sophomore year, a highlight reel of his greatest tackles. Pushing receivers and running backs into the ground, then celebrating like a real football bro.
A football player is a real bro
A real bro is a serious football player
A real bro needs the rush of talking
A real bro executes every play perfectly
For almost an hour the 230 pound defensive back stood motionless in Coach's office.
A week later Dallas was named the Defensive MVP of the Game.
The intervention worked.
Random af Dallas Winston headcanons!!! (sad stuff included because I can't not ugh) ♡
Tumblr media
Dallas doesn't smoke to look tuff, he's got it just as bad as ponyboy. After he told Johnny and Ponyboy to go to the abandoned church, he ends up smoking so much, pacing around his room until he has a coughing fit, and buck makes him stop.
(Movie dallas btw) He's insecure about how big his eyebrows are. He plucks at them unconsciously, until someone points it out. Along with this, he has this weird fear of getting a unibrow because his dad had one, and he constantly scratches between his eyebrows, just in case one is there. (There's not.)
He has ADHD, and can not stop moving ever. I imagine him and Johnny going to a diner, and he's just spacing out, bouncing his leg, and doesn't notice the violently shaking table until Johnny says his name.
After they found Johnny in the lot, Steve and Soda pop had to stop him from finding and (probably) killing the socs. He was so fucking angry.
Steve doesn't fuck with Dallas, and Dallas doesn't fuck with Steve. They once got into a fight and both got *real* fucked up, and now they're both kind of rivals.
Dallas is strong, we know that, but he has muscular legs. Because if he rides horses, ain't no way he's gonna have chicken legs.
He has HUGE hands. Sometimes, he just grabs Ponyboy's entire face. Why wouldn't he?
He doesn't actually like alcohol. Unlike with the smoking thing, he only does it to look tuff. Sometimes, he swaps it out with some soda. Even better, if he does it looks like he has a high tolerance = more tuff.
He really only has street smarts. He dropped out of school when he was 13 and moved to Tulsa, and his parents never bothered signing him back up. He didn't mind though. He stayed with the Curtis's during school hours, and he actually gained a little weight because Mrs. Curtis spoiled him with baked goods.
Once he grew up more, and the greaser vs soc conflict started getting more apparent in his life(and when he started getting an ass), he began losing weight by running.
Speaking of running, he can run for a VERY long time. He got used to running from cops, and he got hella stamina. I like to believe when cops see him doing some illegal shit like starting a fight, they don't bother getting out of the car, because that kid is going to sprint. (But Dallas is smarter, he waits for them to get out first.)
he can NOT grow facial hair. Even though he has light skin and dark hair, he can't grow one for shit. One time he got called 'Babyface' by a girl, and it destroyed his ego. So when he learned Johnny would occasionally shave (like once a week) he was kind of pissed.
He wants a piercing, but he's terrified of needles.
He's gotten used to sleeping on hard benches in prison cells, so he can sleep anywhere he wants, even in jeans.
He definitely prefers soc girls. He doesn't really know why, but he likes the contrast of his greaser personality and a soc in a relationship. He thinks it makes it more fun.
When he learned Sylvia was cheating on him when he was in prison, he was a lot more upset than he let on. He used to visit her every day, and now he just solemnly hung around with the Curtis's.
He chews on his necklace a lot. Darry tells him to quit, but he don't listen. One time, Darry just got pissed and grabbed Dallas by the jaw, and told him (very angrily) to spit it out.
He can eat stupid fast. He got good at it from when he was in prison and had to eat quickly (even if he hated the food) so nobody would take it. He does get sick from it occasionally, but he can hold it down.
One of my really obscure headcanons is that Dallas is half-korean from his mom. He doesn't speak a bunch of Korean because he doesn't live with his mom anymore, but he likes fucking with new officers by pretending he can't speak English. Also, he doesn't really like bringing up his ethnicity because it reminds him of his mom too much.
As I have reblogged before, he can not swim. Pass it on.
that's all I have for now!!!! Love y'all 😍
FEBRUARY 8, 2029
After making their engagement official in November, Tess and Paige packed up their lives in LA and Dallas respectively, spending time with their combined families while negotiating with the Valkyries and trying to find the perfect realtor and the perfect house. The both of them knew they basically had a done deal with the Valkyries, which is why they weren’t all too concerned about jumping the gun and searching for the house in the bay they’d been talking about for months. They’d managed to narrow their search down to two houses, both having the right amount of bedrooms, bathrooms, ample outdoor space, a spacious kitchen large enough to fit their future family (and to handle the chaos of Paige learning how to cook). The only real difference between the houses was the location. There was one that was a little closer to the Valkyries facility, although the other one was a little more suburban and away from the bustle of city life. Tess was honestly leaning to the more rural of the option, but she knew that decision wasn’t fully hers – she and Paige had to remember they were expanding their family in the upcoming years, and it was important that their children had the space to flourish and be happy.
Tess and Paige still had plenty of time to figure it out, so they weren’t worried. By late January, once the official free agency period began, they spent only a few hours in meetings with the Valkyries front office. Tess and Paige wanted to go to the Valkyries, the Valkyries wanted them there. There wasn’t much to argue about. However, they did have to negotiate their contract salaries. The Valkyries initial offer was actually too much, especially since Tess and Paige weren’t planning on splitting up anytime soon and they had a career’s worth of endorsements, brand deals, and steady income. They talked the front office down to a less steep offer, requesting that the extra funds go towards maintaining the facilities and investing in growing their bench. Tess, Paige, Azzi, Ayoka, and Kiki would be their sure starters. It was already a deadly lineup, but when you had an excellent, deep bench with players like Temi Fagbenle, Kate Martin, Kayla Thorton, and Madison Booker, and when the front office was looking at several free agent players like Gabby Williams, Aneesah Morrow, and Olivia Miles, the Valkyries were looking to be in good form for the 2029 season.
In early February, the official signing period began. The internet all but lit on fire when it was announced that Tess and Paige signed to the Valkyries, mostly excitement – especially at the prospect that Azzi and Paige would be reunited, but even more excitement at the idea that Paige would be running point guard with two of the best shooting guards on the wings. Then, after a short trip to the Bay, they finally signed off on a house, too. They decided for the more rural option. The distance to the facility and the city wasn’t actually that bad and they were both getting a little too old for the constant city noise.
Then February 8th rolled around, which would be the perfect ending to a hectic three months. They’d had their wedding date set ever since the plane ride back from Italy in November – Tess was a flurry of excitement and anticipation, hardly allowing Paige the time to get buckled in before talking her ear off about wedding preparation. Though, to her credit, Paige was just as invested as she was, a perpetual smile etched on her face, a lingering warmth in her eyes as they discussed some of the broader technicalities. They both knew they wanted to be married before the season started – neither of them wanted anything too huge, but a ceremony with their closest friends and family on the Hawaiian coast sounded perfect to them. The weather would be mild, not atrociously hot, and Tess had to admit – the idea of Paige, windswept and sun-kissed next to the ocean waves, did something to her heart, so it didn’t take much convincing for either of them.
So, here they are now. Tess and Paige, along with their family, flew out to Hawaii a few days before the ceremony, enjoying their time on the beach and their time with each other. Tess spent weeks perfecting her vows, considering what brand of waterproof mascara she was going to buy (because she just knew she was going to cry like a little bitch as soon as she saw Paige waiting for her). But now that the day is here? She’s freaking out.
“Tess Alessanda, I’m gonna need you to get it together.”
Kamilla’s voice does little to soothe the pounding of her heart. It’s not cold feet by any means. She’s known for years that she was going to marry Paige, but it’s so real right now. In a few moments, her parents are going to walk her down a path made of rose petals and she’s going to marry the love of her life. The excitement and anticipation is so overwhelming, but in the best way possible.
“Kam, she’s getting married,” Aliyah gripes, which causes Kamilla to roll her eyes as she fixes the strap of Tess’s dress. It’s a clean white in color, the skirt of it extending down to her ankles. She opted for a classy ‘lowkey’ since she’d be getting married in sand and she’s sure she would have flipped out if she got their wedding pictures and her dress was wet and dirty. “It’s a big day for her. And for us.” Aliyah pretends to wipe away a tear as she fake cries.
Tess watches Bree and Raven exchange a glance, the amusement in their expression clear as day as Destanni steps forward, her suit a perfectly tailored lilac to match the color of the bridal party. “Kamilla’s right, though,” Destanni says. She adjusts the white flower in Tess’s hair, nodding in approval once it’s to her liking. “You’re crazy about her, she’s crazy about you. I know this is huge for y’all but let’s turn that anxiety into happiness, alright?”
“I know,” Tess agrees, nodding floundering a bit when she tries to wipe her sweaty palms on her dress. Zia hands her a towel and Tess gratefully wipes her hands. “I’m just…super fucking excited, you know? I didn’t think something like this was possible for me.”
“Marriage?” Zia asks, a little confused.
Tess shrugs a shoulder. “Marriage. Love. Buying a house with someone that’s not my mom.” Her joke causes her closest friends to burst out into laughter. “I don’t know. I’m excited and happy and anxious and like, everything is what it’s supposed to be. I didn’t think this was possible but I’m so glad my life has worked out the way it has and I get to get married with my best friends next to me.”
“Shut up,” Bree says, wiping her waterline slightly. “You’re gonna fuck up my eyeliner.” Laughter rings out again.
“Well, Tess,” Kamilla says, a coy smile on her face. “I have a surprise for you.” Tess raises a tentative brow, honestly feeling a little concerned as Kamilla huffs. “Come on, trust me, okay? Promise you’re gonna love it.” Giving in with a sigh, Tess allows Kamilla to cover her eyes as she leads her out of the dressing room and down the hall. She bites her tongue, not wanting to be negative on her big day, but soon enough, they’re coming to a halt and Kamilla is pressing her back against the wall lightly. “Keep your eyes closed, please?” Tess nods and slowly, Kamilla removes her hands from her eyes, reaching down to grab her wrist. “I know y’all were doing the whole ‘no looking’ thing, but I thought this might be fun.” Still confused, Tess allows Kamilla to guide her hand until her knuckles are brushing against someone else’s hand. Kamilla releases her and the other person fully intertwines their fingers. Tess knows almost immediately that it’s Paige’s hand from the firmness of the grip and the way her thumb finds that specific spot on her skin that always soothes her.
“Oh my God,” Tess says incredulously, chuckling a little in disbelief. Paige huffs out something akin to laughter, too, squeezing her hand. Tess barely registers the sound of Kamilla’s heels clicking away as she focuses intently on the woman next to her, still keeping her eyes shut.
“Heard you were freaking out?” Paige asks, her tone teasing.
Tess scoffs. “I was not freaking out,” she says. Paige hums, not quite convinced, and Tess folds instantly. “Okay, maybe I was freaking out a little, but in a good way.”
“If you asked Azzi or Nika, they’d tell you I was freakin’ out, too,” Paige admits.
Tess laughs gently. “Were you?”
“Oh, yeah,” Paige affirms. “Couldn’t figure out these fuckin’ cufflinks. My hands were shaking so bad, had to redo the button on my shirt a few times ‘cause I kept skipping a hole.” They both dissolve into giggles at the confession, some of the tension easing from Tess’s shoulders. “God, Tess, I’on think you know how happy I am right now. Part of me is still in disbelief…like I can’t believe I got lucky enough to end up with you.”
Tess feels the tears pool in her eyes, so she takes a deep breath, willing them back. There’d be plenty of time for crying later. “If you’re as happy as I am, I think I’ve got a pretty good idea,” she says, which makes Paige let out a watery chuckle, squeezing her hand again. “I’m so glad I’m doing this with you. I don’t know if I can wait.”
“Just a little longer, yeah?” Paige asks. Tess can hear the smile in her voice.
“Just a little longer,” she confirms.
They stand in silence for a moment, eyes still closed, but Paige speaks up again. “Don’t freak out, okay?” she murmurs. “I know – easier said than done, I know, but today is already perfect. I was yours from the moment you shot a three over my head eight years ago.”
That makes Tess crack a small, grateful smile. “And I was yours the moment you blocked my shot so hard it broke your nail.”
Paige laughs, a little smug. “That was a crazy block, not even gonna lie.”
If Tess’s eyes weren’t closed, she’s sure they would be rolling by now. “You’re not allowed to freak out, either,” she says instead.
“I’m good now,” Paige promises. “Bein’ near you helps. I’m getting a little impatient, though, so Kam needs to come and get you before I start sayin’ I do.”
Tess chuckles a little. “A kiss for the road?” she says hopefully.
Paige hums. “Keep your eyes closed.”
“Are yours closed?” Tess asks, hearing Paige shuffle behind her, but she figures she gets her answer when she hears some part of Paige’s body slam into the corner of the wall between them and she hisses under her breath. “Point taken.”
“Be nice,” Paige grumbles, both of her hands blindly grasping her hips. “Where’s your face?” Tess grins, reaching down to take Paige’s wrist’s in her hands and guiding them up. Paige’s hands find home on her cheeks, cupping her jaw, and Tess leans into the touch as Paige’s fingers map out her features, brushing across her cheekbones, the bow of her lip, the slope of her nose. “I can feel you blushing. Your cheeks are hot.” Tess groans, much to Paige’s endless amusement. Tess can hear the rustling of her clothes as she leans forward, her lips finding her forehead, and Paige presses a kiss so delicate on her skin that it feels more like the flutter of a butterfly’s wings. Paige’s thumb traces her jaw as she holds her a little tighter.
“I love you,” Tess says as Paige draws back.
“I love you, too,” Paige whispers. “I can’t wait to see you.”
“Soon.” Tess squeezes her hand once more, hearing the sound of Kamilla’s heels once more. Before Paige releases her hand, she brushes her lips across her knuckles, finally parting with a lingering promise in the air.
Tess heads back to her dressing room for the final touches, feeling lighter than she has all day. After a while, her bridesmaids, Kamilla, Aliyah, Bree, Raven, Destanni, and Zia leave the dressing room to take their spots at the altar as Tess’s parents join her. Her mother and father are dressed in matching lilacs, the smiles on their faces full of pride and love.
“We’re so happy for you, piccola,” her mother whispers as she cups her cheeks, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. Her father rubs her shoulder comfortingly, kissing the crown of her head as all three of them try to hold back their tears.
“Are you ready?” her father asks, and with a strong, confident nod, Tess links arms with both of her parents as she walks out.
The sand is warm beneath her bare feet and the sun has begun setting across the ocean. She follows her parents along the familiar path towards the Makena Cove where the altar awaits. Her chin trembles a little, a strong mix of excitement and anticipation settling in her body. She’s really about to get married. She never thought she’d ever be over the moon for something like this, but knowing that Paige is waiting for her makes it so incredibly worth it.
The cove comes into view. Their guests rise – a mix of friends, family, teammates old and new, and it’s so beautiful. The horizon is painted a vibrant orange, streaks of pink and lavender and yellow coursing through; it reflects off of the calm ocean waves, which mesh perfectly with the soft music in the background as she walks closer and closer. The wind blows gently, flyaway strands of her hair dancing in the breeze, but what truly steals her attention away is Paige standing just a few yards away from her at the altar. She’s dressed in an all white suit, matching her dress perfectly. It’s crisp and tailored and fits her in all of the right places. The first few buttons are undone at her chest, revealing a nondescript chain, but from afar, Tess can make out the glint of the rose thumb ring she’s worn for years now. Paige’s hair is half up, half down in soft waves with two strands framing the side of her face and her make up is natural. Tess will never get tired of looking at her or saying it, but Paige is the most beautiful woman she’s ever met.
As she’s led closer and closer to her, more of Paige’s features come into view. Her eyes are a lighter blue, illuminated by the setting sun and the slight sheen of tears. Her lips tremble but her smile is bright and infectious, the joy and love and gratitude radiant on her face. Finally, she reaches the altar and her parents release her, swooping in to draw Paige into a tight hug, whispering words of encouragement to her. They wrap Tess up in their arms, too, pressing gentle kisses to her temple as they leave and take their seats at the front.
Taking their spots at the altar, Tess and Paige can’t wipe the smiles off of their faces as they link hands again. Tess can feel the slight shake in Paige’s hands, but the grin on her face is fearless. Paige’s bridesmaids (or brides-people, rather), consist of Aaliyah, Nika, Azzi, KK, Lauren, and Drew. Tess hardly has the time to think too much before the officiant launches right into the ceremony, welcoming their guests and delivering some opening remarks. Tess knows she should pay more attention to the officiant – it is her wedding, afterall, but she’s laser focused on Paige and honestly wants to skip to the part where they get to exchange their vows and finally say I do.
She doesn’t have to wait too long. The officiant makes it around to the exchange of vows and after a sure nod from Paige, Tess goes first, trying to find the words she’d spent so long perfecting. Her voice is soft, gentle, quiet enough that only Paige can hear it over the tender whistle of the wind.
“On this day eight years ago, we played against each other and I met you for the first time,” she begins, watching a slow smile spread across Paige’s lips as she listens intently. “Then, we competed again in 2022, and in 2023, I tore my ACL. I didn’t think I could survive it. I made it pretty hard on myself, to be honest, but the right people stepped in and there you were. You were there to stay – or so I’d hoped – and you made me want to take care of myself, to commit to PT and therapy and everything else under the sun so I could get better and live out my dream of playing basketball.
“When I was growing up, I thought basketball would be the only constant in my life. My dream was simple – play ball, get drafted. I didn’t expect to meet you or fall in love, but my future expanded. I dreamed of playing ball, of coming home to, or with you, of sharing a life with you and growing with you. You became part of my dream, Paige, and I’m so thankful that I get to do life with you. I’m thankful you understand me in the way that you do and I’m thankful that you push me every day to be better. I’m thankful that you love me unconditionally. My vow to you is that I will love you unconditionally. I promise you we’re a team and there’s nothing we can’t figure out. I promise to give you my all, to give our family my all. You’re my best friend, my person, and after today, my wife. I was yours before we even knew what loving each other meant and I’ll be yours forever – when we’re old and arguing about whose dentures were left on the nightstand, when we’re nothing but specks of stardust in space, when we’re in the next life together because there’s just not a world where you and I exist and I don’t fall for you. I love you endlessly, proudly, without reservation, and with every inch of my being.”
By the time she finishes, a tear is sliding down Paige’s cheek, and Tess wipes it away with a giggle. “I’on know how I can match that,” Paige jokes, drawing a fuller laugh from Tess, but she squeezes her hands gently. Paige’s eyes shine in the setting sunlight, holding so much warmth and wonder that Tess feels her heart swell at the sheer amount of love that she sees reflected in her features. “The first time we spoke, like actually spoke to each other, you said somethin’ that stuck with me for years. I was annoying you, tryna get you to tell me your middle name, and eventually you told me, ‘home is a feeling.’ I thought I knew what you meant by that. I always felt like myself on the court. I felt like no matter what, there was always gonna be a place I belonged as long as I had a ball in my hand. But as I got to know you, I realized there was more to that. A home isn’t just somewhere you belong – it’s somewhere you’re accepted and loved, where you can just be. As soon as I realized I felt at home with you, I knew there was no way I could ever only be your friend.
“You get me like no one else ever has, and it should be scary, but it’s not. It never is with you. It’s like this intense feeling of relief ‘cause you know you don’t gotta do it alone. That’s just who we are, right? We work together, we take care of each other, and we bicker and flirt and tease each other like it’s the first day we met all over again. That’s what I can – what I will promise you: I’ll love you more and more every day and cherish the time we spend together. As long as you’re with me, you don’t gotta be scared of anything. I promise to take care of you, of your heart, of our family, our future. I love you. That’s never gonna change. I thank God every day that our paths crossed and I got my chance with you, no matter how difficult our journey was. But it’s our journey and that’s why it’s so important to me. I wouldn’t change a single thing about us. You’re the best part of my life and I’m so excited to grow old with you – and, just to be clear, you’re the one leavin’ your dentures everywhere.” That’s enough to make Tess roll her eyes, giggling despite the tears beading at her waterline. One manages to slip through and Paige doesn’t hesitate before she’s wiping it off her cheek, her subsequent smile so soft and full of a warmth that would make the Dallas heat feel like it’s freezing. “I love you, Tess; you’re my better half, my purpose, and my home. You’ve made me the happiest woman in the world and I can’t thank you enough for that.”
Paige finishes, and it takes all of Tess’s willpower to hold her composure as her bottom lip wobbles. Kamilla spent an hour on her make up – she’s not going to start crying until they’ve both said I do and they’ve sealed it with a kiss. The officiant smiles, gently requesting the rings – Drew and Kamilla hand them off to Paige and Tess respectively. Paige squeezes her hand, trying to calm the tremors, but they’re both shaking from excitement and anticipation.
“Tess, do you take Paige to be your lawfully wedded spouse, to have and to hold from this day forward, in sickness and in health? Do you promise to keep yourself open to Paige, to allow her to see through the windows of your world and into your innermost fears and feelings, secrets and dreams? Do you promise to grow alongside Paige, willing to face changes as you both change in order to keep your relationship alive and exciting? Do you promise to love Paige in good times and in bad, with all you have to give, and all you feel inside, completely and forever?”
“I do,” Tess responds confidently, her voice strong and clear. Paige smiles at her as she slowly slides the wedding band onto her finger, the ring glimmering in the last remnants of the sunlight.
“Paige, do you take Tess to be your lawfully wedded spouse, to have and to hold from this day forward, in sickness and in health? Do you promise to keep yourself open to Tess, to allow her to see through the windows of your world and into your innermost fears and feelings, secrets and dreams? Do you promise to grow alongside Tess, willing to face changes as you both change in order to keep your relationship alive and exciting? Do you promise to love Tess in good times and in bad, with all you have to give, and all you feel inside, completely and forever?”
Paige’s response is instant. “I do,” she states. She’s grinning widely, her eyes watering with happy tears as she slides the ring onto Tess’s finger, exhaling deeply in sheer contentedness as soon as it’s on. The ring is gorgeous, a perfect match to the engagement ring on her opposite hand, but Tess’s attention is captured by Paige wholly. It’s been like this for years – at the end of the day, Paige is truly the only person who is able to hold Tess’s attention. Ever since their initial fake dating agreement, Tess hasn’t looked at a single person since. Her heart was Paige’s from the day they met, and after their vows, their rings, and their marriage sealing kiss, her heart will remain in Paige’s tender care for the rest of their lifetimes.
“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you both married. You may now–”
Paige’s hands find her hips before the officiant can even finish their sentence, pulling her into her body and capturing her lips in a kiss that’s equal parts delicate, encompassing, and a testament of all the things they’ve been through to get here. ACLs, arguments, misunderstandings, the feeling that it was easier to pretend they didn’t love each other than to confess what they both knew to be true. Paige was right – this journey was theirs, and Tess wouldn’t change a single thing about them. In the end, they made it here on their own time after they learned crucial lessons about each other and about love. Their journey has been nothing short of perfect and as long as Paige is the one that she gets to experience life with, then Tess is all too happy to see where the wind takes them now that they’re married.
Their friends and family applaud for them and the officiant has moved out of the way for the photographer, but neither of them are paying attention to much of anything that’s not each other. Paige’s smile is bright, blinding despite the rising moonlight. The sheer happiness on her face is difficult to describe but Tess knows it, knows Paige well enough at this point. She fists her hands in the collar of Paige’s top, pulling her back down, grinning against her and laughing when Paige lifts her gently off the ground. The last kiss she presses to her lips is softer, but it’s a lingering promise that feels like returning home all over again.
(And, for the record, when Tess and Paige arrive at the Valkyries facility for their first practice of the season, they are met with gift boxes nestled in their lockers right next to each other. They open the boxes together, finding their matching home and away game jerseys, the name on the back proudly reading BUECKERS-KENNEDY.)
Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew—Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash, and Captain Dallas—are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.
Tom loved watching the old tv show Once Upon a Time. He had a celebrity crush on the actor Josh Dallas who played Prince Charming or David Nolan on the show. He had since then watched other shows that the actor stared in. It was one of his fantasies to meet the handsome actor in person one day.
Tom then got a bold idea of a way to be close to the actor in person. It was a risky plan, but he definitely wanted to attempt it. He had purchased a TF Ray phone that was quite expensive. He asked his friend Jonathan to help fulfill his fantasy.
"What, you really want me to do that?" Jonathan asked confused and curious at the same time.
"Yes, I want you to turn me into a pair of shoes. Put me in a box along with the TF Ray phone and mail me to Josh Dallas with this note." Tom explained one more time, holding a handwritten note signed by him.
Jonathan didn't know if his best friend was insane or just went plain mad. "Why would you want to do that? You don't know if the guy would wear you or even release you. You could end up as the actor's property forever. You sure you want to do this?"
Tom pondered Jonathan's questions. It really was a risk, but he had a huge crush on the actor. He really wanted to do this despite all the risk that his best friend mentioned. "I know what risk are involved before I even considered doing this. And I want to do. So, will you help me or not?" He responded, showing his stubborn resolve for a reckless course of action. It was scary not knowing what fate would happen to him, but it also excited him at the same time.
Jonathan saw that no amount of questioning would change his mind. Tom was dead set on going through with it. He decided that he would help him achieve his fantasy even if he was totally against the idea. He hit the flash option on the screen of the TF Ray phone. Tom was instantly reduced to a pair of shoes. He picked him up and wrapped him in wrapping paper. He placed the shoes in a box, along with the TF Ray phone, special written note and the instructions how to use the phone. After the box was sealed. He went to the post office to mail the box off. He felt bad for helping his friend achieve his fantasy, not knowing if he would even see him again. But this was what he wanted.
Tom stayed in darkness for what seemed like forever. He could hear voice as he was being shipped out to his favorite actor. He hoped he would reach him soon.
Josh was handed a sealed box when it was delivered to his house by FedEx. There was no return address on the box. When he opened it, he saw a handwritten note on top. He read it: "Mr. Dallas, I loved watching you in Once Upon a Time and your other shows. You are my favorite actor, and I have wanted to meet you in person one day. But I came up with a better idea. What if I could spend a day with you. So, I had myself changed into a pair of shoes for you to wear using the TF Ray phone provided in the box. Wear me, please. One day on your feet will be what I want. sign Tom."
Josh didn't know if it was a practical joke or actually real. He found the TF Ray phone along with instructions on how to use it. He was shocked it was actually the real deal. He unwrapped the shoes in the box. If the phone was real, then perhaps the shoes he was holding is a former human being begging to be on his. He first thought of the moral implications of actually wearing the shoes. But then he would be the only one to know what his shoes really are. Besides just one day would be fine to fulfill this fan's fantasy, what harm could it do.
Tom was so happy to see Josh Dallas holding him. He hoped the actor would at least speak to him, but he didn't. Instead, the actor did what you would normally do with free shoes. He was put on the actor's feet without a single acknowledgement of his human existence.
Josh thought should he talk to the shoes, but that would look very strange talking to a pair of shoes like they were a person. He just hope this one day on his feet would make the fan happy. Yet, he thought the fan was crazy to want to be worn on his feet.
Once Tom was secured with string arms tied up, he saw that maybe it wasn't the brightest idea to consider. The actor's feet crushed his insole face with force as he walked around his house. It was a constant crushing over and over. The pain was beyond his imagination. Even when the actor was just sitting down, the pressure of his feet pressed against his insole face was bad enough. The wiggling of his toes showed that Josh Dallas's feet owned him completely. As the day went on, the actor had a few errands to run. That meant more walking on him. Being shoes for the actor now didn't seem as much fun as he originally imagined. He started to beg for his humanity back. It was just only over an couple of hours and he was ready to not be shoes anymore.
Josh loved the way the shoes comfort his feet. He had never felt shoes that were this good. Even when doing some errands, each step felt so well cushioned. He pondered the thought of keeping the shoes despite knowing what they are. He decided, that maybe one more day of the shoes would be enough.
The next day, the actor went for his morning run, wearing his new shoes. It was so great running in them. It was like he was running on clouds. His feet didn't feel the stress of normal shoes. He would make a decision after his run when he got back to his house.
Tom was in agony as Josh was enjoying his morning run. The sweaty sock began to saturate his insides. A strong foot odor began to develop. His insole face was being molded by the actor's feet. After the previous day, he already developed a strong foot odor of ownership. It was on supposed to be just a day. He began to wonder if the actor would ever release him. He remembered that Jonathan warned him that placing his fate in the actor's hands might not go as planned.
Once Josh got back home, he took the TF Ray phone. He found the revert to normal setting for his new shoes. He honestly loved his new shoes and saw no reason to lose them. He deleted the revert back to normal setting, making his new shoes permanent. Only he would know that his special shoes are a living person. Everyone else would only see normal shoes, even his family would think so. He took the handwritten note that he had hidden and tore it to tiny pieces before throwing it in the trash. With that all done, he could treat the poor fan as nothing but shoes since he volunteered to be the actor's shoes in the first place.
Interlinked Chapter 2
Paige is now back home, she has a beautiful house about 15 minutes from the Dallas Wings arena and practice facilities. She takes a shower and gets changed into a pair of grey sweatpants and a black sports bra. Paige flops onto her bed with a sigh, her knees are aching and she is exhausted. She takes out her phone and opens up the contact for Elizabeth.
Hey its Paige  Was wondering if you wanted to grab that coffee tomorrow?
Hey Paige, I would love to. Does 9:00 work for you? I usually drop Kinzley off at daycare around 8:30.
Yes that works great for me, I’ll send you the address of the coffee shop! Did Kinzley have a good nap?
Perfect! Yes she did, she was asleep by the time we made it to the car, and stayed asleep for 2 hours!
They continued to text for a couple hours back and forth until Paige said goodnight.
The next day:
Paige got to the coffee shop and saw Elizabeth getting out of her car. Paige hurried ahead so she could open the door for Elizabeth. “After you” Paige said. “Thank you” Elizabeth smiled and walked inside. Elizabeth looked at the menu for a couple minutes before they got to the counter to order. Paige ordered first, “I’ll have an iced latte with an extra shot of espresso please, and she will get..” as she turned to Elizabeth, “I’ll get an iced white mocha please”. Paige paid for the drinks. Elizabeth gently touched Paige’s bicep, “thank you, you didn’t have to” she said with a smile. Paige nodded and gave her a smile back, “I wanted to.” They grabbed their drinks and made their way to a table near the back corner of the coffee shop.
Paige talked first, told Elizabeth about what its like playing for the Wings, how she has become close with some of the girls on the team but her old teammates from UCONN still visit lots. Elizabeth listened intently, offering some nods and asking a few questions. “how old is Kinzley?” Paige asked after a while. “She just turned 2,” Elizabeth smiled and talked about how Kinzley is the light of her life and how special she is. Paige hesitated then asked, “you mentioned that you owned a private practice with your ex, was he Kinzley’s dad?”.
“yes, he is, she won’t be seeing him anymore unfortunately.” Elizabeth responded, with a slight break in her voice. “I’m sorry we don’t have to talk about that” Paige quickly said. “no no its okay, he just became abusive after Kinzley was born, never to her but to me, and one night not long ago when he came home drunk and it was really bad, I knew I had to leave. So I packed up mine and Kinzley’s stuff that night and left, I signed over my rights to the business to him and haven’t looked back.”
“Oh my gosh I am so sorry” Paige looked at Elizabeth and reached across the tablet to gently touch her hand. “Don’t apologize for someone else’s actions” Elizabeth said, wiping a tear away from her cheek. “I’m not apologizing for his actions, I am just sorry that you had to go through that, you didn’t deserve that.” Paige wiped another tear away from Elizabeth’s cheek, then quickly put her hand down on her lap, “sorry”. Elizabeth smiled, “don’t be”.
They continued to talk for about an hour before Paige looked at the time. “I should get going, I have to meet up with Arike for a lift.” “yeah me too actually, I’m heading to the gym to get my office set up and meet some of the team” Elizabeth stood up and they began walking to their cars.
Paige stood by Elizabeth’s car, “I’ll see you later then, this was nice.” Elizabeth leaned in for a hug, wrapping her armed around Paige’s waist, “thank you for the coffee, I would love to do this again.” Paige hugged her back and as they pulled away she tucked a stand of Elizabeth’s hair behind her ear, “yeah me too, I would like to take you on a real date if you would allow me.”
Elizabeth smiled and said “I would love that, see you later Paige.” Paige opened Elizabeth’s door for her, and she got in. “see you later.” Paige closed Elizabeth’s car door and watched as she drove away before she got into her own car and drove to the gym to meet Arike.
Time skip: a couple weeks later, Paige and Elizabeth have been on 3 dates, a dinner date, another coffee date, and a dinner and a show last night.
Arike and Paige are in the gym, working out together.
“You don’t get it bro like she’s just great. I get butterflies every time I’m around her. Like this isn’t just another girl I want to hook up with, I really like her, like its crazy bro.” Paige talks to Arike as she’s squatting.
“You are down bad for her aren’t you. I can see the way you look at her every time she is in the same room as you, and I think you almost had a stroke the other day when she was working on your knee and giving you different exercises to do to help it.” Arike teases.
Paige laughs, “yeah well you have to admit she is gorgeous”.
Arike nods in agreement.
Elizabeth walks in, “hey guys how’s it going?”
“Hey Elizabeth, good, just getting our lift in” Arike says and glances at Paige.
“How’s your shoulder Arike, you are taking it easy right?” Elizabeth lifts her eyebrow and questions.
“Yes ma’am, we are just doing legs today, following doctors orders and giving my shoulder a break.”
“Good”, Elizabeth says as she walks up to Paige who is putting some dumbbells away. “and you, how are you?” she says snaking her arms around Paige’s waist from behind and resting her cheek on her shoulder blade. Paige blushes and tilts her head back to look at Elizabeth, “I’m fine, probably a little sweaty though.” Elizabeth pulls away and laughs, “I was thinking, my family is coming over tomorrow, we are having a little party for Kinzley since her birthday was a month ago but we never got the chance to celebrate with us moving… would you want to come? No pressure I just..” Paige interrupts her before she can continue rambling, “of course I will be there, we have team practice in the morning but I will come over after that beautiful.” Elizabeth smiles, “thank you, I think Kinzley will be excited to see you.” Arike coughs, Paige looks at her and laughs, “I guess we should finish our lift, but I will text you later okay?” Elizabeth nods “I look forward to it, don’t work too hard you two,” she says and she walks away.
“So when are you going to ask her to be your girlfriend?” Arike asks Paige. “Soon, I just have to figure out how I will do it.” “You guys are cute, and she definitely likes you just as much as you like her, she’s got heart eyes for you anytime she sees you, it’s so obvious.” Paige laughs, “thanks Rike, now lets finish this lift so I can go home, I am exhausted.”
A/N - so what we thinking about it so far? Maybe one more chapter tonight!
Funny Explanation for TG Call signs
Maverick
Sarcastic- he's short, wears a Dallas patch and cowboy boots. Dallas Maverick's are a basketball team
He's a Dallas boy and they've already got Cowboy and Jackal, and he's not cool enough for Wings, Star or Ranger. (Dallas Maverick est 1980) Did consider Chaparrel but got shortened to Chap and caused confusion with the Charlie who had a moustache (Chaplin)
No tattoos- compared someone's sweetheart tattoo to being branded. Unbranded cattle= Maverick
Joking about studs, someone called him a yearling (think that means very young), Maverick definition online is unbranded calf or yearling
Romance novel character named Maverick Mitchell (fic idea!)
Maverick is a putdown- "the misfit, the maverick, the spoilsport, the sore thumb." Lewis H Lapham ."'Arrogant', 'Maverick', 'a wildman' or even just crazy."- John Eliot. Training officer warned someone he's a bit of a maverick but skilled? Officer referred to him as 'The maverick'.
Georgia man sentenced to nearly 500 years for facilitating dog fights, abusing animals
A Georgia man was sentenced last week to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and abusing animals, which included 107 dogs seized at his property in November 2022, authorities said.
It's the longest known sentence involving dog fighting anywhere, state animal crimes resource prosecutor Jessica K. Rock, also a special assistant U.S. attorney based in Georgia, said by email Monday.
Rock said by email that defendant Vincent Lemark Burrell, 57, denied being involved in dog fighting in court. It wasn't clear whether Burrell would appeal. His attorney did not immediately respond to a voicemail message Monday evening.
The case launched in 2022 when an Amazon delivery worker reported to authorities that several dogs were tied up with heavy chains on the defendant's property in Dallas, Georgia, about 30 miles west of Atlanta.
On Nov. 8, 2022, Rock, Paulding County sheriff's deputies and local marshals were on hand to search to the property with a judge's permission, according to Rock and officials' statements.
Sheriff's officials said in a statement at the time that the dogs were pit bulls, though canines described as such are often mixed-breed. In a statement Thursday, the district attorney's office did not mention a single breed.
Prosecutors ultimately alleged 107 dogs were on the grounds with signs of abuse, including some observed as underweight — with the grounds apparently lacking food, water and shelter — and many dogs restrained with logging chains in close proximity, "a tactic that serves to build dog aggression," the Paulding County district attorney's office said in its statement Thursday.
Burrell was arrested the day of the search based on allegations of facilitating dog fights and animal cruelty, the sheriff's office said in a statement after the search.
Another group of dogs among the 107 at the property was found in a basement living with urine and feces on the ground, the sheriff's office said.
Evidence at Burrell's property linked him to dog fighting, the DA's office said in a statement Thursday. The evidence is alleged to have included a treadmill designed for dogs, a breeding stand, a break stick "used to pry open the jaws of a dog during a fight," documents linked to other "known dog fighters," a first aid kit for injured dogs, veterinarian-only medication and sales contracts for dogs.
Prosecutor said in the statement that a veterinarian examined the dogs and found some with removed teeth and scars from fighting.
The county seize the dogs under a federal warrant, and they were ultimately taken in by a nonprofit organization, Friends of the Forlorn Animal Rescue, NBC affiliate WXIA of Atlanta reported.
Among the dogs found was Baby Shark, 8 weeks old at the time, authorities said. In photos with prosecutors last week, she showed off her adult size and smile. Rock alleged Baby Shark was one of the dogs intended for illegal fighting.
Prosecutors K.C. Pagnotta and Jessica K. Rock pose with Baby Shark.
"He was breeding them for the purpose of dog fighting and so she would’ve ended up in that life had we not taken her from him," she said by email.
Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced Burrell to 475 years based on his conviction by a jury last week on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals.
"The judge sentenced him to the maximum amount allowed by law," Rock said.
Zam swoops in before the reporters can ask either of you more questions and helps you escape back into the privacy of the rest of the building. Your shoulders droop with exhaustion after the events of the day and Jake slides an arm around your shoulder that you lean your head against the two of you make your way back to your office so you can pack up and head home together. Home. You wonder when you started thinking of Jake’s place as home, but it feels right. You’ll have to talk it over with him officially, but you wouldn’t be surprised if Jake and Javy have secretly packed up your apartment already and moved all your things into his house. You push open the door to your office, letting a breath out at the promise of privacy with Jake only to be met with the wide smiles of your parents. You jump, surprised as your mom gives an excited cry and wraps you up in her arms.
“Mom?!” You’re surprised, to say the least. You’d almost forgotten that they’d been at the game and you feel your face heat at the idea of them witnessing your little spectacle. Your dad comes around from where he’s been sitting at your desk, holding out a hand to Jake who’s awkwardly standing behind you.
“When my daughter became your fan, I watched her fall in love with hockey and tonight I watched her fall in love with you. Take good care of her, son.” Your eyes are filled with tears all over again as you see Jake shake your father's hand before your dad pulls him in for a hug. The door to your office opens again and Tucker pokes his head in.
“The lady in pink said I’d find you guys here?” He says as his eyes fall on the four of you crowded into the tiny space. “Hey, are you okay?” He’s pushing through the door in a whirlwind, his hair sticking up every which way where you can tell he’s been running his fingers through it. You’re wrapped up in his arms instantly as he checks you over.
“Tuck, I’m okay.” You reassure him as he releases you and takes your arm in his giant hands, looking over the place where Cyclone had grabbed you earlier, running gentle fingers over the tender skin and you wince slightly. Both Tucker and Jake stiffen at your response. You look up at them and it’s like you’re looking at two giant golden retrievers, your guard dogs, eager to stand between you and the world. “Fine, a little less than okay, but I will be, okay? I’m fine now. I’m safe.” Jake relaxes at that but Tucker still looks unconvinced as he rounds on Jake.
“What the hell, man? You think you can just go after my baby sister because she’s a fan?” Tuck’s two years older than Jake but Jake’s aura makes him look like the older one as he stands up straighter as recognition sparks in his eyes.
“You’re the guy who asked me to sign a jersey last year after a game, aren’t you?” Tucker blinks, surprised by the change in topic but Jake’s still connecting dots. “And that’s the jersey hanging over your bed, isn’t it?” He addresses you this time and you nod sheepishly.
“You have it hanging over your BED?!” Tuck exclaims, and you give him a dirty look.
“I have him IN my bed, what’s your point, Tuck?” You snap back and he mock gags, covering his mouth in shock as he stumbles back to lean on your desk as he processes this information. You put your hands on your hips as you approach him, scowling at him. “Jake’s my boyfriend, and you’re just going to have to deal with that. He’s good to me, I feel safe with him, and most of all he loves me and I love him.” Tucker sighs as his eyes drift between you and Jake where he’s standing just behind you, close enough to look like a unit but far enough away to let you fight your own battles.
“Look, I’m happy for you guys, I really am, but Charlie’s going to go BALLISTIC.” You scoff, rolling your eyes.
“Charlie can shove it as far as I’m concerned. I know it’s been a while but you two need to get used to the fact that I have a boyfriend. I’m not a kid anymore.”
Tucker nods slowly, standing up and extending a hand to Jake.“Take care of her, man. If you ever hurt her I swear to god,”
“TUCKER.” You glare at him. Jake shakes his head at you gently.
“I know what you mean, I have two sisters of my own. If someone hurt my little sister I wouldn’t hesitate either. Bugs is lucky to have you in her corner.” Tucker visibly relaxes at that and grips Jake’s hand tightly in his, an unspoken agreement passing between their firm gazes and clasped hands.
When they part Tucker gives you a long look, “I mean it, Charlie’s gonna go BALLISTIC when he sees the game.” You shrug.
“He can take it up with our PR representative. She’s pretty damn good at handling this kind of stuff.” Jake laughs at that.
“She sure is.”
“Blueberries.” Jake reads the next item on the list, turning the cart towards the produce section. Until now, you’ve both been resigned to grocery delivery or having Javy or Zam do the grocery shopping so you’re both excited to finally get to do it together. Sure it’s mundane and simple, but that’s what you enjoy most with Jake. Lazy mornings with him cooking breakfast while you read headlines and cheesy horoscopes out to him. Sunny afternoons sprawled across the couch, watching horrible daytime TV and old hockey reruns. Sweet evenings spent walking along the beach behind his house while Pudding plays in the surf. This is just another simple moment with him that you cherish.
You’re scrutinizing the blueberry cartons when you hear Jake’s voice behind you.
“Hey there!” You turn to see Jake crouch down in front of a little boy who’s looking at him nervously.
“Um, do you play hockey, mister?” The kid asks, his hands fiddling with the strings of his hoodie. “You look a lot like my favorite player. His name is Jake.” Your heart aches as you see Jake’s face break out into a huge grin.
“No way? That’s my name too!” The kid’s face glows with awe as his tiny eyes widen, realizing that he has in fact run into his hero at the grocery store.
“Mr. Jake, you’re my favorite!” He blubbers excitedly and Jake chuckles, giving the kid a fist bump as he trembles excitedly. The kid surprises Jake by throwing his arms around Jake’s neck and Jake lets out a startled laugh before hugging him back just as a flustered woman approaches, wringing her hands.
“Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! I don’t know what got into him!” She apologizes as she goes to extract her son from Jake’s arms as he stands and you watch the realization hit her as she recognizes Jake just as her son excitedly tells her,
“Mommy! Look, it’s Mr. Jake from hockey! It’s really him!” Jake gives her a sheepish smile.
“Sorry about the trouble ma’am. Your son’s a real sweet kid.” She nods, struck silent by shock.
“Mommy, can I get a picture with Mr. Jake?” The little boy tugs on his mom’s sleeve and it shakes her back to the present.
“If that’s okay with him, then it’s okay with me, Danny.” Jake nods and she fiddles for her phone and you watch as Jake pulls Danny close and poses for a photo.
“Thank you, Mr. Jake!” He gives Jake another big hug that Jake returns.
“Thank YOU for being a fan, Danny,” Jake answers, mussing up the little boy’s curls affectionately. He waves as the boy and his mother take their leave before turning back to you. “What’s that face for, Bunny?”
You shake your head. “Nothing, that was just really sweet.” He wraps you in his arms as you deposit the blueberries in the cart.
“You know I always give my fans the best treatment.” He presses a kiss to your temple as you giggle.
“I do.” You concede, snuggling into his arms.
“And my number one fan gets the best treatment.” He whispers as he kisses your cheek.
“The very best. So I’m thinking?” He arches an eyebrow at you. “Maybe two cartons of blueberries?” He laughs, tugging you close and kissing the tip of your nose as you scrunch it up.
“You can have as many cartons of blueberries are you want.”
***
A few days later you’re sitting at the counter in Jake’s corner enjoying a well-deserved day off. Things are starting to pick up at work with the season opener just around the corner in a few weeks, but thankfully things in your personal life have slowed down. Your relationship with Jake was public now and Cyclone has backed off after Jake’s statement, though you’re sure Zam had something to do with it as well. Things are starting to resemble something that could be called normal. Jake’s making blueberry pancakes across from you as you sip your matcha latte when your phone buzzes. You pick it up, your brow furrowing unconsciously as you see your landlord's name flash across the screen.
“What’s up?” Jake asks in response to the furrow in your brow.
“Just my landlord, reminding me that next month's rent is due on Monday.” You haven’t been to your apartment in weeks, since most of your clothes have migrated to Jake’s place over the last month but you’ve yet to discuss you officially moving in with Jake.
“Tell him you’re ending your lease,” he says smoothly as he flips a pancake with annoyingly good precision.
“W-what?” You stutter as Jake looks up at you, surprised.
“Bunny you practically live here as it is, what’s the point in you paying rent for a place you’re not even using?”
“I just, we never officially talked about it. I didn’t want to overstep.” He nods as he deposits the pancake on your
“Well then consider this me officially asking. Bunny, will you move in with me? Well with us.” He turns and reaches down to scratch Pudding’s head where she’s waiting patiently next to him for any scraps he happens to throw her way. “What do you think Princess P? Should we let Mommy move in with us?” She barks at that and you laugh as Jake looks back up, grinning. “What do you say, Bunny? You ready to be a family?” You nod, fighting the tears that are threatening to cloud your vision.
“Yes, I’m ready to be a family, Jake.”
“Well, then why don’t we finish up breakfast and then go get you all packed up? And text your landlord to let him know. If he has any issue with it, I’ll cover whatever fees he asks you to pay for breaking the lease.”
“Jake, you don’t have to do that,” he fixes you with a stern look.
“I don’t have to, but I want to, Bunny.”
“Then you’re going to have to let me cover half the rent for this place or something to make up for it. I can’t stay here for free!”
“Well, you’re going to have to get used to this because I don’t pay rent for this place.” He says with a shrug as he pours more batter into the pan.
“Wait what, why not?”
“I own the house.” Your jaw drops.
“Since when? I thought all of you guys were renting!”
Jake’s cheeks pinken as he admits with a chagrined smile, “I bought it a couple of days after I met you.” You’re gaping at him as he blushes. “Once I knew I could trust you, I knew I wouldn’t be going anywhere anytime soon. And once I saw you in my kitchen for the first time? I knew I never wanted someone else to get the chance to enjoy that view.”
“Jake,” your heart aches at his words. “I still can’t stay here for free!”
“Oh, I never said you would be. Daily rent is payable to both your landlords in the form of kisses and cuddles.” You roll your eyes as he winks at you.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if you and Javy haven’t already packed up my entire apartment and you're just waiting for me to actually say yes.”
“Maybe,” Jake muses, and your eyes widen.
“Jake, you didn’t!” He shrugs.
“Don’t worry, Bunny. Javy did all the heavy lifting, I promise. Zam’s already got Facebook marketplace listings ready for whatever furniture you don’t want, so just let her know what to post.”
“JAKE!” He grins.
“What? I just wanted to make things easier for you when you did decide. Don’t worry, I bubble-wrapped all the things from your shrine extra carefully.” You blush at that. “I was thinking we could update it, what do you say?”
You nod, too embarrassed to speak. “Perfect.” He gives you a wink as he turns back to the stove. The stove in your home. This is home. You’re home.
***
You push open the door from the garage. You and Zam just handed off the last of your old furniture to their new owners. You turned in the key to your apartment and you’re officially moved out. Your finger runs over the house key on your keychain. Before it was just Jake’s spare but now it’s yours. You live here now. The house is eerily quiet as you step into the living room. Pudding is curled up on her giant hockey-puck-shaped bed in a sunbeam and Jake’s nowhere to be seen. You hang your keys on the hook that’s now yours and go looking for him. You find him in what was supposed to be a second guest room. The two of you finally finished setting up the bed in the first one, and Zam’s already clamoring for a girls’ night. This one, however, has been notably empty except for a few boxes that you’ve been storing in there as you finish moving in.
It’s been completely transformed when you walk in and your breath catches at the sight. There's a gorgeous hardwood desk in the center that you’d been looking at wistfully while you and Jake had been furniture shopping last week. It was way out of your price range, though so you’d left it behind but you’d be lying if you said you hadn’t thought about it several times since. Behind it is a luxurious-looking desk chair but what really makes your heart ache is what’s hanging on the wall behind the desk. The coat from your medical school graduation is framed and hanging in the center of the display. Surrounding it are all your certificates and diplomas from school, and sprinkled in are photos of you as well as some of you and Jake together. Tears fill your eyes as you take in the sight.
“What do you think, Bunny? You like it?” You turn to see Jake leaning against the doorframe, a soft smile on his face.
“Jake,” your voice breaks and you throw yourself into his arms. “Thank you, I love it.” You whisper into his chest as he holds you close.
“I figured if I get a shrine then you should get one too. After all, you deserve to be celebrated too.” He presses a soft kiss to the crown of your head.
“And the desk?” You ask, sniffling as you scrub away your tears.
“I saw you eye-fucking it last week and let’s just say I got a little jealous.”
“JAKE!” You exclaim, slapping his chest playfully and he chuckles.
“I know you didn’t say anything because of the price but I wanted to spoil you.”
“Jake, you ALWAYS spoil me.” You pout at him, playfully.
“I’m your boyfriend, it’s my job to spoil you rotten.” He says, leaning down to pepper your face with sweet kisses and you giggle, scrunching up your face against the assault.
“Well, you’re VERY good at your job.” You give him a sultry smile as you hook your fingers in the collar of his shirt. “What do you say I spoil you for change?” His green eyes darken as his grin turns into a smirk.
“Yeah? What do you have in mind, Bunny?”
“I was thinking we could christen my new office.” His eyes are almost fully black as he follows as you pull him inside, kicking the door shut behind him.
“Sounds good to me.”
***
It’s Tuesday and you’re squirming in your seat beside Dr. Bates. You’re wearing Jake’s jersey under your white coat and you can’t help the way your eyes search for him on the ice as the boys warm up. Tonight’s the season opener and you’re lucky enough to have it at home in San Diego. Jake’s in peak condition. His most recent scans have come back showing his knee to be back to normal and your heart is light.
The stands are packed with fans and excitement is buzzing in the air. The boys are all in good spirits except maybe Bradley, but you’re not sure you’ve ever seen him in good spirits. Zam is wearing a butter yellow skirt suit despite the chilly air in the arena. She’s standing to your right, eagle eyes watching the cameras and press. Then a horn goes off and the boys are skating back to the boards for the opening ceremony. Jake tosses himself down on the bench right in front of you, turning to give you a big grin.
“Hey sweet girl, you ready for tonight?” You grin, reaching to grip his glove with your hand.
“I’m ready, are you?”
“Always, Bunny. After all? We’re a team. Everything else will take care of itself.” You share a soft smile as the lights in the arena dim and you swear your love is glowing in the dark because you can see it shining in his eyes as he turns back to his team. He’s going to make one hell of a captain.
