growing up his relationship with his father was... strained. he was pretty strict about safety (where did you think jiminy got his passion for edutainment songs that call you stupid for not knowing how to cross the street safely) and jiminy's survival instincts were a little lacking in his youth. he's always had more curiosity (and sheer stupid stubbornness) than caution. it left jiminy feeling that he was, at worst, a problem or disappointment of some kind. even at the best of times he wasn't certain that he really fit in and it left him with a lot of time to delve into increasingly wild fantasies about going off and exploring on his own. in present times he doesn't foster any resentment or anything towards his father, and he does know that he loved him, he just worried about him and they didn't see eye to eye in terms of goals or interests. but a lot of his father's teaching practices are things that jiminy still utilizes and his practicality through his young adulthood really stemmed from his influence.

he got along better with his mother, who really sparked his passion for education (if his father was 'in charge' of teaching them survival skills, his mother was more so responsible for learning shit like the natural sciences and reading and writing). she was also more keen on listening to jiminy's perspective even if she was equally concerned about many of his ideas. he didn't confide in her terribly often because he was well aware of that. but she was one of the people he told early on that he was planning on leaving, and she did make him promise to write. some of the topics he's most interested in (particularly the rest of the animal kingdom) are thanks to her and i think he looks back on his relationship with her a bit more fondly than the one he had with his father
