steve can see his reflection in his shoes and he stares down at it, not even really wanting to meet tony’s gaze. it’s not a hard choice--bucky or everyone else, he’d tear the whole world down for james buchanan barnes and he knew it from the moment they first met--but it feels harder, with tony staring at him the way he is. tony’s always admired him, always looked at him like he’s the sun since the first time they met. 

he feels like he’s disappointing him, somehow. 

exhaling sharply--he’d been holding his breath and he hadn’t known it--he glances up at the other. it’s the same look that stabs him worse than any knife ever could, and he feels like a traitor.

(he’d do it over and over again. for bucky. he’s going to TEAR THIS WORLD DOWN for bucky.)

    ‘  i’m sorry, tony. i am. but i have to do this. i have to protect him. 

he stands. tony’s shorter than him, but he feels so much smaller, now. feels like it’s 1942 and his lungs are closing up and he’s tiny and fragile again. under that gaze.

    ‘   he’s family--he would do it for me.

in the marvel verse tho--- in all honesty, will understands a lot more then he lets on. he is nicer than he lets himself be. and with the empathy being an ABILITY, it takes a bigger toll on him. but he knows what its like to have no friends, and how it feels to think someone is your ally and then see them being your enemy. so, yes, he would go on tony’s side. he’d fight by his side, because will can feel what others hide in their emotions. 

its exhausting to him to feel this--- but its what makes him want to push others away so badly in the end. because he knows if he keeps feeling their pain, he’ll get too invested in it all. 

but he has a sense of justice. and a moral compass that may not point north all the time but he has enough loyalty in him to want to help whoever he can empathize most with.
