17 Things to See and Do in Taiwan

I used to live in Taiwan for a few months as an English teacher. I loved the time there and have always felt the country was really under appreciated. So, in this is a guest post by Carrie Kellenberger from My Several Worlds and an expat living in Taiwan for ten years, she lists out all the amazing things you should see and do there.

Every country in Asia is beautiful, but Taiwan is special for many reasons. The people are warm and hospitable. In March 2019, Taiwan was listed as the happiest place in East Asia.

While it might be a small island, you would be amazed at the never-ending variety of sights and fun things to do here. With over a hundred mountain peaks above 3,000 meters, over a hundred hot springs scattered around the island, both golden and black-sand beaches, nine national parks, world-class museums, glittering skyscrapers, stunning temples, and a huge number of night markets that are second to none, Taiwan has something that everyone can enjoy.

To this day, nearly 14 years after I moved here, I still think Taiwan is one of Asia’s best-kept travel destination.

Here are some of the best ways to spend your time in Taiwan:

1. Eat, Eat Eat!

As a result, Taiwan has become an epicurean’s playground. The food scene is an international smorgasbord of culinary delights, for every budget and almost every diet.

Night Markets While there are five-star international restaurants of every variety throughout the country, the night markets are where the real gastronomes go. They promise to keep your belly full while your wallet remains relatively unscathed.

There are over 30 night markets in Taipei, New Taipei, and Keelung (and over 70 night markets across Taiwan). If you’re not sure which one to choose, visit this list of night markets in Taiwan and take your pick. My personal favorites are Shilin, Keelung, and Roahe Street in Taipei.

Here are a few things you should try:

Xiao long bao, also known as soup dumplings, a favorite staple food here. They are made out of a thin pastry folded into a type of bag that is then stuffed full with a meat-and-vegetable mixture and a tiny amount of soup, then garnished with raw ginger and soy sauce. Biting into one of these is a flavor explosion in your mouth. Plenty of street vendors at night markets offer fresh xiao long bao for around $2 USD for a basket of 10-12. There is really no reason not to try them. I’ve yet to meet a visitor to Taiwan who hasn’t loved their xiao long bao experience. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Tian bu la (a type of fish cake fried with coriander with a dash of pepper and spice)

Pig’s blood cake (It’s made from pig’s blood, sticky rice and soy broth and tastes much better than it sounds, I promise!)

Zhen zhu nai cha (Taiwanese bubble tea)

Taiwan Beer (it’s the most popular local beer)

No matter what you decide on, you’re sure to have a great meal at a low cost while experiencing Taiwanese culture at its very best. You’ll be amazed at what you can buy for dinner for just $5 USD! You’ll definitely find some things that you hate, but you’ll also find things that you’ll love. It’s all part of the experience, right?

2. Visit a Taiwanese Teahouse

Tea culture in Taiwan is wonderful, and there are many options for tea lovers.

Maokong Gondola – This gondola will whisk you four kilometers to a mountain peak in a glass-bottomed cable car, from which you can view the tea plantations built into the side of the mountain as you zoom up. You can catch it at the Taipei Zoo MRT station; a ride costs 120 NT ($4 USD) each way. Once you’re at the top, there are several winding paths for a pleasant mountaintop stroll and a great selection of teahouses to choose from when you’re ready to enjoy a cup of fresh mountain tea.

Jiufen – If you’re heading out of Taipei, Jiufen is one of Taiwan’s most popular tourist destinations, owing to its appearance in the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away. This seaside mountain village offers some terrific shopping opportunities, as well as all the different kinds of foods you see in the movie. It’s one of my favorite places, because it is also home to some beautiful teahouses in the most glorious setting. Imagine sitting at the top of a mountain, looking out over the ocean in the comfort of a traditional tea house. It is truly a magical experience, especially if you can get there for sunset. Go on a weekday to avoid the large weekend crowds.

Jwu Jiu Teahouse – If you make it as far south as Chiayi, be sure to find Jwu Jiu Teahouse, a hidden gem that is like taking a step back into the past. Jwu Jiu is a traditional wooden teahouse set above enormous stone ponds filled with hundreds of giant, brightly colored koi. Feed the fish while sipping on your tea, and enjoy some traditional dim sum in the loveliest setting you’ve ever seen. The grounds belong to a local family, and the teahouse uses a well that is over a century old, in which the water still runs deep and pure. The owner has kept most of the original structures and bricks, plus a hundred-year-old Osmanthus tree, which is associated with many traditions in China and Taiwan. If you’re a history buff, you’ll enjoy the teahouse’s long history, displayed with pride and obvious care.

3. Check out the Northern Coastline

Head to the coast for some incredible lunar-like landscapes at Yehliu Geopark. There are some unique, otherworldly rock formations, including one that looks like Queen Elizabeth (though it took over 4,000 years to form) that are a popular tourist attraction. Try to get there early to beat the crowds.

4. Hit the Beaches

The beaches of Kenting on the southern tip of the island offer fun in the sun. White Sand Bay is the most popular and a great place to soak up the sun, swim, snorkel, or even go diving (just keep an eye out for jellyfish!). Other great beaches are South Bay and Little Bali Bay.

5. Soak in the Hot Springs

Taipei has its very own active volcano in its backyard, and because of the volcanic activity in the area, Beitou Hot Springs enjoys a steady stream of visitors and locals who love to bathe in its healthy waters. Prices start around 40 NT ($1.30 USD) per person for a soak in the hot springs, making it a very affordable choice for anyone looking for some R&R.

6. Go Island Hopping

Boats will drop you off at one island for a few hours and then take you to the next one, so you can literally go from snorkeling to observing sea turtles to wandering through traditional aboriginal villages made out of coral in a single day.

7. See Old Taiwan

Two groups of islands that make up the Kinmen Archipelago off the west coast of Taiwan, just a couple miles from mainland China — and they are old Taiwan at its best. Here you’ll be able to see some traditional architecture, and there are also insightful museums that highlight the ongoing tensions between the People’s Republic and Taiwan.

8. Get Off the Beaten Track on Orchid Island and Green Island

Located just off the southeastern coast, these lush islands are a treat to visit. Here you’ll find hiking, swimming, diving, and amazing hot springs. You can also get further off the beaten path and have an adventure by renting a scooter to traveling around the islands yourself!

9. Explore the Green Mountains

Grab a scooter and head up into the green mountains, which extend over five ranges the length of the island. If you want to stretch your legs, climb to the summit of beautiful Jade Mountain and watch the sunrise; this beautiful peak is almost 4,000 meters above sea level, making Taiwan the world’s fourth-highest island.

10. Visit Wuling Peak on Hehuan Mountain

If you’re still craving some climbing and hiking, head to Wuling Peak on Hehuan Mountain, around 3,275 meters above sea level, making it another good hike for anyone looking to spend more time outdoors. But what really makes this place special is that the peak is so high, you can look down into a sea of clouds below!

11. Go Hiking in Taroko National Park

Ready for another city break? This national park offers visitors a chance to hike through mountainous terrain and gorges, and you can even stop to dip your feet in swiftly flowing mountain rivers. Covering just under 100,000 hectares, it’s one of only nine national parks in Taiwan. Admission is free.

12. Head East

To really enjoy Taiwan’s majestic beauty, don’t forget Taiwan’s eastern coastline. The east coast highway has some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the world, from plunging sea cliffs and splashing surf to beaches, nature reserves, and rural towns a world away from the big city.

13. Witness Some Chaos

Give yourself bonus points for checking out all the super cool graffiti; you won’t find it on the main thoroughfares, but if you venture onto some of the smaller side streets, you’ll soon find yourself in world of brightly decorated alleys and lanes.

14. See Tianhou Temple

Stepping through the entrance to this beautiful Taoist temple filled with mythological creatures, smoky incense, lucky goldfish, and people paying respect to the gods is truly a surreal experience. You’d never know this quiet oasis is in one of the busiest areas of Taipei!

15. Explore Fo Guang Shan Monastery

You can explore each as you walk your way up to the Big Buddha, the highest seated bronze Buddha in the world. I’ve been to many temples and monasteries in my lifetime, but this one takes the cake.

16. Visit a Taiwanese Aboriginal Village

There are many knowledgeable local guides that can introduce you to the aboriginal way of life in Taiwan. The Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village near Sun Moon Lake is the most popular destination to learn more, but it’s certainly not the only one — there are lots of villages to choose from.

17. Take Part in the Pingxi Lantern Festival

Taiwan is very environmentally friendly, so make sure you go with the eco-friendly paper lantern options that disintegrate, leaving no residue, and don’t cause fires. The company My Taiwan Tour also currently offers biodegradable paper lantern tours in Shifen.

There are many things about Taiwan that make it an incredible place to live; it’s easy to take some of those things for granted once you’ve been here for a while. I frequently hear that people think Taiwan is very Westernized, and while I agree that it is to some extent, there are still plenty of authentic Taiwanese experiences to be had!

Taiwan is and continues to be an unexpected travel destination that continues to delight visitors to this day. There is no place like it!

Jwu Jiu Teahouse – If you make it as far south as Chiayi, be sure to find Jwu Jiu Teahouse, a hidden gem that is like taking a step back into the past. Jwu Jiu is a traditional wooden teahouse set above enormous stone ponds filled with hundreds of giant, brightly colored koi. Feed the fish while sipping on your tea, and enjoy some traditional dim sum in the loveliest setting you’ve ever seen. The grounds belong to a local family, and the teahouse uses a well that is over a century old, in which the water still runs deep and pure. The owner has kept most of the original structures and bricks, plus a hundred-year-old Osmanthus tree, which is associated with many traditions in China and Taiwan. Stepping through the entrance to this beautiful Taoist temple filled with mythological creatures, smoky incense, lucky goldfish, and people paying respect to the gods is truly a surreal experience. If you have your own ride in Kaohsiung, I strongly encourage you to stop by Fo Guang Shan Monastery and pay homage to the monks that live there. An ultra-Zen monastery open to the public, the complex is massive and stunning, leading to the Great Path of Buddhahood, a broad pathway flanked by eight identical pagodas. You can explore each as you walk your way up to the Big Buddha, the highest seated bronze Buddha in the world. I’ve been to many temples and monasteries in my lifetime, but this one takes the cake. 16. Visit a Taiwanese Aboriginal Village

One of the coolest events in Taiwan, the Pingxi Lantern Festival involves releasing hundreds of paper lanterns into the sky. The second is functioning. This depends on a lot more stuff.

Functional sobriety is different. In someplaces, it will even get you out of a ticket, although it shouldn’t. If yourefuse a BAC test (blowing into a little machine) they might ask you to walk ina straight line, count backwards in threes, recite presidents, idk. It’sbullshit.

There are things that impact functionalsobriety and a huge one is experience. People who drink a lot and frequentlycan appear more sober at a higher BAC. They might slur less, walk straighter orbe able to recall more details.

Thingsthat affect functional sobriety:

How much you’ve eaten

How much you usually drink whenyou drink

How much your parents drink(**** boy howdy do we need to discuss this)

Your emotional state

The children of parents who drink heavilyor regularly tend to have a higher tolerance for alcohol. This sounds like agood thing, but it’s not. It means that they tend to drink more rather thanless. It increases their risk of alcohol use problems, and makes them lesslikely to recognize a problem, because high levels of use sounds normal.

I mean, my parents drink every night andalways have, a minimum of, say, 6 standard drinks, which is way above mostcountries’ standards for low-risk drinking. My dad usually drinks until he isfalling asleep sitting up. They both view their alcohol use as low level andnormal. It is not, and it has posed problems for my sister and I.)

The thing about functional sobriety is thatit is kind of an illusion. Your response time is still for shit, your decision-makingis still bad enough so you have a decent shot at appearing to consent (evenenthusiastically) to sexual activity you otherwise might not consent to (I say appearing because you can’t legally consent, but the other person may not even know you’re drunk), yourpersonality is altered (you’re less resistant to suggestion, less inhibited andmore impulsive) even while you sound more sober than your buddy there.

How Long Should I Exercise?

When you are exercising aerobically, you need to keep your heart rate in the 60 to 70 percent range for at least 25 minutes to have the desired results.

When you are in your ideal aerobic range for this length of time, you will burn calories at the most efficient rate possible. For the first ten minutes or so, the body will use the glucose within the blood stream to fuel the motion—that is, you will be expending the ex- cess calories you have eaten. For the next 15 minutes, your bloodstream will not be able to provide your body with all its needed fuel, so it will have to call upon its re- serve tank, or stored fat, to provide the necessary energy. In these all-important 15 minutes, you will be fueling half of your activity with glucose that is still in the bloodstream. The other half of the expended calories will be derived from burning up fat stored underneath your skin. If you can stay nearer to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate throughout your workout, you can call upon an even greater percentage of stored fat. If your goal is to rid yourself of body fat more quickly, you may want to devote more time to your cardiovascular workout. You could exercise aerobically for several hours, but the truth is that after 60 minutes or so, you will have maximized your workout. Instead of becoming fatigued when you exercise at 60 percent of your max- imum heart rate, you may have to increase to 70 or 80 percent as you grow stronger. It will take more effort to shift into an anaerobic gear. You can increase your performance envelope by practicing terrain variance. If you walk or even jog on a hilly terrain or have the computerized resistance level on the treadmill set to vary the incline level, there will be times when you achieve an anaerobic level of exercise. As you near the top of the hill, your body is working harder. As a result, your heart rate increases to a point at which you may reach an anaerobic level. Typically, the signals that you have reached this anaerobic stage will include a shortness of breath, lactic acid buildup, and the onset of rapid fa- tigue. When you can facilitate brief encounters with the anaerobic stage and come back into your target area of 60 to 70 percent, you will successfully improve your physical condition, eliminate much of the glucose in the bloodstream, and conse- quently burn a greater number of calories from stored fat as you return to your tar- geted aerobic range.

Just Do It!

There are many different ways to achieve a healthy cardiovascular level, and there are no excuses for avoiding this important element of your transformation. If you have a tendency to avoid cardiovascular exercise like the plague, I ask you to recommit yourself to the process. Challenge and push yourself. Promise yourself that you will do ten minutes. After those first ten minutes are up, you are less likely to give up on yourself. During those first minutes, try to visualize your goal. What- ever your goal, your transformation depends heavily on doing your cardiovascular workout. You have a vast array of options, and there is no reason that you should ever become bored by your choices. Again, the only thing that matters is that you do something to elevate your heart rate for at least 25 minutes. I prefer individual activities so that I do not have the ex- cuse of “my partner didn’t show up” for not doing my aerobics. I also prefer to do my aerobic workout immediately after I finish strength training. That is just my per- sonal preference, but when you use the Hollywood sculpt program to tone your musculature, you will be lifting weights. There will be an increased amount of lactic acid in your body after weight lifting, and completing the cardiovascular portion after your toning session may prevent a great deal of soreness. Choose whatever activity you enjoy. If you like to ride your mountain bike, row in a skull, or play handball, go for it. If you like to swim, play tennis, or swing dance, by all means do it. The point is to be active. If you do not know what you enjoy, try several things.

To Begin, Walk

If you are just beginning to exercise and have not been physically active for a while, begin by walking. It is actually a very efficient and effective method to increase your fitness level and achieve your goals. The simpler you can make this process, the better. If you can’t get to a gym to use an elliptical trainer, does that mean you cannot get in your cardiovascular exer- cise? If your tennis partner cancels, is that your excuse to skip your workout? No excuses here. If all you have to do is tie your sneakers and walk out the door, you eliminate any barriers that may prevent you from reaching your goal. If the weather does not permit you to walk outdoors, do it indoors. You may live or work in a high-rise building and choose to walk up and down the stairs. At almost every mall in the country, dozens of people gather before the stores open to get in their walk. In many areas there are hockey rinks, indoor sporting arenas, school gyms, and public buildings that could provide a venue for your cardiovascular workout. If you are healthy and mobile, there are no excuses. I have been shocked to see the num- bers of people jogging along the rivers in Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia during torrential rains, and I have been awestruck by people speed-walking along the lakes in downtown Minneapolis, Chicago, Buffalo, and Detroit during snow- storms. While some people might think these exercisers are nuts, you will soon know why they do it. It makes you feel so good, you can’t imagine not doing it. If you walk to get in your cardiovascular exercise, you can achieve amazing re- sults. If you walk one mile, you will probably burn about 100 calories. If you jogged that same mile, you would burn approximately 110 calories. There is really not much of a difference. I have seen people lose up to 120 pounds by walking. All you need to do is raise your heart rate to the target range for at least 25 minutes. If you choose to walk, it is not the kind of walking you do as you window shop. You must walk at a brisk pace with energetic motion in your arms. If you’d like, you can bring a set of 2-pound dumbbells (to avoid injury, never use ankle weights) on your walk to increase the intensity of your workout. Intensity is the key. Assuming you are just beginning, elevate your heart rate level to 60 percent of your max and maintain this level for at least 25 minutes. After you are able to achieve this, do not increase the duration of your walk, but increase the intensity. When you are able to achieve 60 percent of your maximum heart rate for 25 con- secutive minutes, you are ready for the entire Hollywood workout.

I guess I’ll tell my story

This has some pretty triggering stuff in it I guess? This is more for my own reflection than anything else, so you don’t have to read it if you don’t absolutely want to.

When I was in High school I suffered with intense binging and purging issues. I couldn’t go a meal without excusing myself either at the end or halfway through to go straight to the bathroom and puke everything up. It was an endless cycle and I still couldn’t ever get to my gw at the time. When I was 17 I was 5 feet tall and I weighed 118 lbs, but, I also naturally had double d breasts. Every time I’d look at my BMI I’d feel sick because I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I had a great body, in hindsight, but at the time I felt like a disgusting whale. And my massive tits didn’t help. I never had a boyfriend and every boy I came into contact with showed no interest in me at all. Every boy. So I would keep going back to the mirror. I was too fat. I was too wide. My breasts were too big. I was disgusting. Finally I met someone online. He said that he liked my size and that if anything I could gain a few lbs. He said he loved me for me and he acted like he was crazy about me. Eventually I moved 900 miles to live with him. He said he’d marry me, but we both lived with our parents so it seemed really inappropriate, so we decided to hold off until we could get a place of our own. I stopped purging. I stopped starving myself. But I never stopped binging. He wasn’t the healthiest person, either. In fact, his BMI classified him as obese, so it goes without saying that his diet wasn’t in the slightest healthy. But I wasn’t concerned about that because I thought that he was making an effort to lose the weight, or at least to try to lose the weight. I loved him for him, just like he said he loved me for me. So I thought we’d be okay. So, of course, I binged like my life depended on it. I ate when I wasn’t hungry. I ate when I’d just eaten. I ate just because other people were eating. I ate my feelings, because for some reason now that I was living with him he didn’t seem to care about me like he had when I was 900 miles away. He didn’t tell me he loved me as often. He didn’t want to have sex anymore. (And this was all when I was still in the range of about 120-130 lbs.) I felt disgusting again. And even more so now because I’d gained a whopping 90 lbs while living with him. Eventually I moved back home so I could go to college, and he seemed fine with it. My highest weight ever in my whole life was 210 lbs. I feel gross even typing that out. When I came home I cut down my binging, but I didn’t stop. I was now binging at night when everyone had gone to sleep. Ice cream, cookies- I’d scatter out potato chips onto a plate and then drizzle syrup or honey over top of them for that salty/sweet taste. However, I eventually got a breast reduction. In 2017 I had a doctor recommendation, and my back pain was too much for me to handle to the point of not being able to get out of bed because of the immense pain. I went from a double g back down to a double d, but my body was still huge and disgusting.They removed 15 lbs of fat from my chest and after the surgery I had no appetite, so I lost 10 lbs from being unable to eat anything other than oatmeal with my pain meds. So, I had dropped to 185 lbs. After the surgery I felt like a hideous creature. My scars hadn’t healed properly, leaving me looking like some kind of Frankenstein freak show. But at least my boyfriend still loved me. At least there was one person that still thought that I was beautiful no matter what. Right? I had encouraged him to start going to a gym or at least try to lose the weight. Make an effort, ya know? He’d been going for a few weeks when he decided that it’d be a good idea to tell me that some girl that was a regular at the gym had “hit” on him and that he thought that she was “more attractive” than me. “In a basic sense, ya know? She’s more attractive than you in a general sense. She’s just very.. I don’t know. She has a good body, I guess. I mean, she goes to the gym so of course she’s going to be hot.” On our anniversary in December 2018, he told me that he didn’t feel right being in a relationship with me. He said that he needed to fix some things about himself and so therefore he needed to not be in a relationship. With me, specifically. He said that he loved me, but that we had problems that he couldn’t look past. We’d been together for 8 years. So I guess you could call this a relapse. I don’t know if I’ll ever get back to my original weight again. I’m 26 now and it’s starting to feel like I won’t be able to get the weight off ever again, but I don’t really care. If going back to Ana can do anything at all, then I’m willing to do it. I’m just so sick of feeling disgusting and fat and worthless and unlovable. I’m sick of being lied to in order to spare my feelings. I don’t want to binge ever again. I hate myself more than I ever have in my entire life. All I want is to finish college and be skinny. I’m not asking for the world here. I started eating low cal on 1/3. My last full meal was an order of grilled nuggets from the kids menu at Chik-fil-A. I think that’s about 150 cal. Since then I haven’t eaten over 500 cal at anytime. I’ve been on a water fast since 1/11 and ketosis has kicked in for me (yay!) My last weigh in was this morning and I’ve dropped to 174 lbs. I really don’t care what anyone has to say to me. I’m going to be skinny by Summer if it kills me. I don’t want to look or feel this way ever fucking again.

Breaking News: Media Coverage Belittles Millions

The maintenance of inequalities is not something that is hard to do. Change is difficult, but maintenance is more easily handled. The media plays a big part in maintaining the inequalities that we see in our everyday lives. The media is an indefinitely expanding entity that broadcasts a wide variety of different ideas to the general public. The media ranges from everything on cable to social media plus everything in between. The billboards we see in big cities to the small signs seen out in the countryside, all of it can be the media. And all of it, without a doubt, shapes minds and opinions like no other force on the planet. Everything we see on TV, Instagram, newspapers, radio, etc. is all a range of ideas and messages being thrown at us, whether we are aware of it or not. This either reinforces our ideas as we know them or forces us to view things from a different perspective. The way we interpret media is either a result of our mindset or a contributing factor to how our mindsets are shaped. Again, whether we know it or not, messages pertaining to race, gender, ethnicity, religion, etc. make their ways into our brains. This shapes the structures and institutions that we build in society. They provide the basis or foundations of these institutions, directly and indirectly. Furthermore, bell hooks provides some interesting commentary on the unique subject of the perspective or gaze of Black females, which is quite relevant to the conversation of media presentation and its effects on the public.

To be frank and possibly simplistic, the media is a huge contributor of the information we receive. Yes, the parents and teachers of society provide a bulk of knowledge for future generations. However, what happens in between the time spent with parents and teachers? Adults, teens, children, and even toddlers now have access to information like never before. The learning never stops with the pervasiveness of technology in this day and age. TVs, phone, tablets, laptops, etc. are widely accessible. Even at exorbitant prices, people manage to purchase electronics, all of which have the power to show you some form of media. Children watching cartoons on TV can take the shows they watch with them wherever they go, learning valuable lessons about sharing and caring wherever their parents take them. Teens continue scrolling through all platforms of social media from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed. Adults watch the morning news while getting ready for work, hear news while they commute, have their phones out all throughout the workday, and can end the day with nightly news. Movies and shows are made available to the public for indulgence at all hours of the day and night with services like Netflix and Hulu. There is a nonstop barrage of media we are able to consume in 2018 and it is only still the beginning of this massive technological revolution.

With all this media surrounding us at all times, it can absolutely have a negative impact on the institutions we have set up to enhance and enable the smooth flow of societal necessities. Additionally, it can have a negative impact on the mental health and schools of thought of many in the general public. When this does occur, we have individuals in society that are shaped by the on-goings of the world and this does not only affect those individuals. They bring this thinking to work, to school, to anywhere they take themselves and if they are notable individuals in places of importance (schools, business, prisons, media) they can harm others mentally, emotionally, even physically with their anomalous ways of thinking.

Let us take a broad example, a trend per say, of recent media coverage of politics that may (and does) reinforce or shape ways of thinking that can potentially (definitely) affect peoples’ lives in more ways than one. I will analyze here potential direct and indirect effects of this media coverage on an individual’s life. So, how can media coverage on politics directly effect a person’s life and maintain the inequalities we see every day? A “caravan” of migrants has been a big story in the media recently. The biggest development in the ongoing story has been the mention of US troops going to the United States/Mexico border to stop this “invasion” as it has been referred to by many. Regardless of what the story is about, talk of troops “protecting” the US automatically enables a sense of fear and subliminally identifies an enemy. Media coverage that describes troops protecting this country, no matter what it is from, objectively identifies a hero (troops) and a villain (something bad). This plays into the vilification of Mexican immigrants that has been ongoing for much of US history but has been very prominent and overt in recent years. So how does this directly affect the average American? Well, let’s take the case of the average Latinx-American who has to see these heartbreaking messages of people with whom they may identify. This not only affects their mental health directly but affects the way they go through the world. Within the workplace or at their school their race/ethnicity becomes overly apparent to them. They become hyper aware of their belonging to the “other”. They become the anomaly. They become a representation of the villain. At work, coworkers bring their thoughts on the matter in with them, and some are not too pleasant. At school, other kids make racially-charged jokes, whether they know how much of an impact that has or not on the Latinx in this example. Just because of media coverage, some people are introduced to ideas or have ideas reinforced that are neither conducive to a healthy society nor happy individuals. A person’s life is both directly affected by what they actually see for themselves and indirectly affected by the ideas or actions that other people may present to them.

Regardless of the type of media or the topic the media is covering, this example is analogous to so many situations. Whether it’s the topic of race in “Dear White People” (Netflix Original show), the coverage of the #MeToo movement in the local newspaper, or Breitbart posting something political on Instagram, media portrays a message and that message truly stays with people. That message can linger for an entire lifetime and this is a powerful sentiment. These messages shape individuals and therefore shape the institutions of which they become a part. This has drastic consequences on how some live their daily lives, and can unfortunately add to the inequalities many deal with all the time. Today, this isn’t something that can be turned off. It affects people 24/7. How can one not internalize these messages? If a person is told something enough times and/or for long enough, they will start to believe it, no matter how offensively outlandish that message might be. The media has the power to eat away at individuals if left unchecked. Even with all the good the media does, the negative side can absolutely have long-lasting negative effects on peoples’ psyche and well-being.

A notable and relevant reference to this commentary is bell hooks and thoughts on “The Oppositional Gaze”, with specific reference to Black female spectators. As stated by Manthia Diawara but mentioned by hooks, “Every narration places the spectator in a position of agency; and race, class and sexual relations influence the way in which this subjecthood is filled by the spectator” (117). Here, we have this ever present idea of media affecting the minds of individuals and that individual’s mind perceiving media in very distinct ways. Furthermore, hooks references “rupture” or the resistance of “complete identification with the film’s discourse” (117). I think this can be applied more widely, specifically to the resentment man feel toward many forms of media. This is again all part of the negative effects media may have on the general public. If you are told to believe something negative, perhaps many in society will refuse to accept this and shy away from media consumption or a particular message being portrayed. When hooks dives deep into that opinions of Black women she writes “[Black women] testified that to experience fully the pleasure of that cinema they had to close down critique, analysis; they had to forget racism. And mostly they did not think about sexism” (120). I think this is so relevant to the times; people can become so jaded by the negative role media may play (direct/indirect) in their lives that they may reject it altogether, in order to live peaceful lives. Unfortunately, this ushers in the thought of “ignorance is bliss”, which may not always be healthy. But this is the unfortunate reality with which many live. hooks continues by adding, “[Black women] consciously resisted identification with films that this tension made moviegoing less than pleasurable; at times it caused pain” (121). The relevance this has to my fictitious, yet very realistic scenario, is spot-on. The overwhelmingly affect media can have on one’s life truly is something awfully spectacular. It can really cause so much hardship for an individual, especially when these message of inequality are floating through the airways nonstop.

I do not know if there is a remedy to all this negativity. Somehow, throughout history, in the face of negativity people have found a way to resist and provide social change in this country. Classes such as AFS 363, for example, serve as a way to educate motivated individuals to create a more informed society. Other classes on race, gender, economics, politics, and so on also serve to better society and produce individuals more equipped to bring about change, even if that change is something as simple as one person providing their friend with just a little bit more knowledge than they had prior. Media that provides fair and moderate coverage or perspectives on very polarizing subjects, in light of much bipartisan frames of thought, also serves to push society toward a more fair and equal world. Still, we live in a time where media is a never-ending production of information that can affect people’s lives in so many different ways. We must be the change and further advance the change to eliminate inequality and internalize more positive messages about ourselves and others.

I have been with AAA my whole life because my father advocates highly for them so I have trusted his judgment and experience. But I think they may be ripping me off. Trying to find the best plan for myself. I am 30 yr old female self employed. I have an ok job right now so a high premium is not going to work. I was stopped at a red light behind two cars. Both cars started to go and so did I the next thing I knew I had hit the car in front of me. The car in front of me hit the car in front of him. Hello, my spouse and I are in the market for life insurance now. After some researching, we have pretty much decided to go with term or term return of premium insurance. I still have following to decide and if you could enlighten me on these I would appreciate it very much. Which company? We are 40-45 years old, just We still have almost 30 years of mortgage, and 20 years of raising our son. I was using some calculator online (Kiplinger, Life Foundation?) to calculate how much coverage I need, and they both returned figures like 1+ million. How can this be? Is 1 million life insurance common these days? We have about 170,000 in remaining mortgage balance (actually I only included half of that in calculation), and I calculated monthly living expense to be 2,000-3,000 (depending on if our child is still with us)/month with my spouse's income to be 2,000/month, and also included college cost. Does this seem reasonable that this will add up to be million dollars in 30 years, with inflation? I was thinking of about 300,000-400,000 before using these calculators. Term or Term ROP? We have almost decided against Term ROP and to go with straight term, but are not final on this decision. What do you all think about ROP? With ROP, do we typically actually receive ALL of the premium, or are there any fees etc. subtracted from the refunded amount? Also, does ROP term insurance give you investment returns in addition to the amount of premium you paid? One of the reasons that we are leaning towards straight term is that with our current age, with 20-30 year policies, the likelihood well actually be using the death benefit would be moderately high then ROP wont be such a good deal, as well as hearing that if we just get term and invest the difference in the premium, wed be ahead of term ROP. How long? In this case, should we try to get a 20 year term (for while our son will be with us), or 30 year term, just to cover the full length of the mortgage, although I wouldnt need that much coverage towards the end of 30 years (our son will be with us for only 20 more years, our mortgage will be paid off except for last 10 years or so)? Or buy 25 year return of premium term policy and pay 5 more years of mortgage using the money we receive from return of premium? Or buy two term policies - a large amount of 20 year policy plus a smaller amount (to cover the remaining mortgage balance in the last 10 years of mortgage)? Thank you for your help!""
