You have very interesting tags. Interesting both in that they’re fun ideas, and also in that they’re almost completely incorrect lol. (The alt-Robin and Morgan are indeed the gender you didn’t pick, and I almost had the other Morgan defect and join the Shepherds, but I’m likely settling on something different.)

I’ll put some of my brainstorming under the cut. Important context: you can’t access this xenologue until after Lucina joins the party.

Did you ever do the thing you mentioned you were excited to do for the au prompts?

Sort of, i.e. it’s sitting as a wip in my notes app.

I was trying to write basically a Fell Xenologue-style story for Awakening. I have one note that’s just brainstorming and adjusting the outline of the plot, and another that’s a script of the one bit that’s the most fleshed out in my head. The plot was starting to come together nicely. Then I got hit with a bout of depression, as happens every now and then.

Section 31: The Movie (No Spoilers Review)

Long time followers will not be surprised to learn I didn't like it. Why might surprise you though. Normally my shtick is constructive criticism and analysis, and I'm going to try really hard to say on the rails, but I really didn't like this movie.

Look, I made a certain kind of peace with the notion that this would not be my kind of Star Trek story when it was announced. So I tried to be in the right mindset. In some ways I was pleasantly surprised in how it dialed back the nihilism and atrocity apologia quite a bit.

For once Section 31 is not attempting to solve the problem of an existential threat to the Federation through a half baked Xanatos gambit featuring rationalizations for genocide that don't really stand up to any serious scrutiny. So there's that. If we're grading on a curve, maybe assigning Star Trek what in education world we refer to as Individualized Education Plan, the absence of a poorly conceived moral justification for genocide is worth at least one star.

But anyway, I was mentally prepared for a story about people who are very much not Starfleet and I was prepared not to hold this against the film just because it wasn't my Star Trek.

Except it was boring. I wasn't invested in any of the characters or their stories. I suppose this also kinda, sorta functions as an origin story for Rachel Garrett and the iron nerve that would see someone choose to lay down their life for their principles not once, but twice even after being offered a reprieve from imminent death. But its all just so cliched and dull. It also doesn't really sell the idea that Garrett is someone with the capacity to go solemnly and knowingly to her certain death because its the right thing to do. Section 31's Garrett is a junior officer babysitting a gang of unstable criminals. She never really pays a price for choosing her Starfleet principles and the conclusion of her arc is that she's a bit cooler under pressure and less uptight for having stared down mortality.

It wildly gyrates from John Wick to Suicide Squad to Guardians of the Galaxy, and just never develop any fondness for any of the characters. The fight scenes are too long, the choreography doesn't do anything I find all that novel or impress me with the skill of the actors or their stunt doubles, and I don't feel whatever tension or uncertainty I assume I'm supposed to feel. The final bought of fisticuffs does up the ante in terms of how much violence a Trek fight will show but that kind of made it worse in that the extra bit of ick doesn't actually compensate for the lack of suspense.

Ultimately, its a film that unsurprisingly leaned into many of my complaints about Discovery. Which I think is actually an underrated show that is hated for the wrong reasons. But it often suffers from bizarre and self contradicting story logic, a shallow sense of the core principles its trying to espouse, and rather boring and drawn out fight scenes that just seem to eat up time. Fisticuffs are not new to Trek, but for the most part other shows just get it over with because with their less elaborate sets and FX, there's only so much they could do to make the fights visually interesting if the fights weren't narratively interesting.

I assume the people who are constantly complaining about political correctness or wokeism will find something to complain about, but it really doesn't have any of the shallow idealism of Discovery and I actually find I miss it. Discovery's first season in particular had a lot to say about struggling to remain decent in indecent circumstances, but Section 31 only sort of has anything to say.

Where it does have anything to say, I suppose maybe if you squint there's a subtle retcon where Terran evil is no longer genetically predetermined as alluded to in S3 of Discovery, but rather a product of a monstrous society that makes people into monsters in order to survive. Codas like "there are no righteous tyrants" (and I'm paraphrasing because I don't feel like going back to pull the exact quote) feel significant but its frankly pretty vestigial as moral messaging goes because the Terran Empire is so cartoonishly evil and nonsensical in how its institutions operate.

And anyway, I don't know who that message is for? The handful of internet edgelords who fully acknowledge they want a Caesar to "cross the Rubicon" who probably aren't going to watch this movie anyway because Trek, especially modern Trek doesn't glorify and center their Hobbessian worldview? It just feels like the sort of empty, placeholder philosophy that anyone can get behind and anyone can feel like it represents them and their virtues and assume its an explicit condemnation of whatever real world figure they hate. Which just feels so cowardly and dull.

When it comes to storytelling about trying to be a good person amidst terror and horror, Section 31 like Discovery and Picard, is just Diet Expanse. Or maybe in this case, its the Guardians of the Galaxy without any mirth.

Star Trek Into Darkness is no longer my least favorite Star Trek movie.

All the little ways Feng Xin is just really devoted to Xie Lian past and present. The way he forgives the debt, the way Nan Feng is always the one who sticks close to XL and hates to leave. The constant worry FX shows during Season 2.

Feng Xin is just so good T_T

I like it onesided & unrequited xD

What made you ship it?

LOOK AT THEM! Two extremely shady people who would let the world burn but just get along really well! We only really get LW+PM and PM+SWD in the actual novel so the LW+SWD dynamic can only really be inferred but I'm inferring partners-in-crime and LW being the only person SWD will tone down the venom for.

Also the crumbs we get about them in the revised version were the final nail in the coffin. I want moooooore

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

*gestures to the above* I just think the two of them are so wonderfully shady together, but also can see each other's best qualities. I see SWD as a second love for LW - he can never replace Bai Jing, but he's also not pushing her on it. And SWD is extremely grateful for her help with the fate swap that he has decided that he is ride or die for this woman (I have a lot of headcanons regarding LW's motivations there haha)

I just see them at two people who would be very open with each other, and LW as the one person who could tame the water tyrant

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Shipping in general probably. Even for all of the above ships I'd still take a well written platonic story over romance any day.

OK! So, that first article ... the moment I saw the name Kissinger, I was like, oh, I am taking this article with SUCH a grain of salt.

I think embedded in the vitriol, there are maybe, one or two valid points, i.e. this article speaks specifically of the music but despite the supporting cast, I do find The Bear as a whole to be extremely white -- but it also reads as though this person completely missed the point of the show and simply wants it to be something that it isn't. I don't ever feel as though the show is trying to pretend to be something that it isn't; at its core, it's a character exploration and therefore the emotional stakes run the show with the plot being secondary and accusing the literal style of the show to emphasize the chaos and the pressure that the characters and dynamics illustrate wonderfully the on their own as gimmicky is just ridiculous.

The Guardian article, is more balanced in its criticism and I understand it more because I think the third season actually suffers from the same fate of The Bear itself -- season 2 was such an excellent season and created expectations for the third season (much like the demolition of The Beef and turning it into The Bear) that the third season, while still being good television on its own, did not live up to and the characters were stagnant this season, which means there wasn't a lot of emotional movement particularly for Carmy.

Unlike the first article, I think that seeing Carmy pre-Beef/Bear and how he had this wonderful optimism when it came to cooking and came to working with particular chefs was something that we needed to see to see a different side of him but the idea that what stuck the most was his tormented tenure under David Fields isn't new, we've seen that for two seasons so seeing it again, did leave me with a feeling of OK, now what? If we're watching the psychological descent of Carmy, if season 2 ended with him leaning into the toxicity because he wants to be great and he thinks that peace and therefore Claire is distracting from his greatness then we need to see a radical shift in his character rather than more of the same.

And then even the dynamic with Syd was a little confusing because I kept wondering why Syd wasn't speaking up. Like she did her "I'm not your babysitter" and did a few suggestions that he promptly ignored but she still fell in line and that didn't make any sense to me, it's just these everyone allowing Carmy to be a tyrant and that felt false after everything they went through in seasons 1 and 2 so this season felt oddly stagnant and aimless because what are we doing, where are we going?

That being said, I do agree that this show is still one of the most compelling shows on, if not the most compelling.

Lmao cat in a human body Water Tyrant Shi Wudu getting mobbed by a gang of giant dogs for treat taxes. He absolutely didn’t give them any because they were “ill behaved brutes” and as petty payback, they made sure to drool on his robes, sneeze in his face, and maybe stole a shoe or two as a chew toy.

Shi Qingxuan thinks they’re absolutely adorable and definitely baby talks them

The dogs know that Shi Qingxuan loves them, and that Pei Ming and Ling Wen are both nice to them, so Shi Wudu should like them too (everyone should like them)

One instance of being mobbed by them and he’s 100% covered in dog slobber immediately. There’s no way he isn’t. FX’s definitely going to have to ensure he keeps them out of the Water Master’s palace from now on. Even if SQX is the one who’s letting them in everytime the dogs show up

Maybe they’d have better luck going to beg from Yushi Huang?

Okay not to be tgcf on main again BUT I've rlly been thinking a lot abt he xuan post-canon and like... man. Yea what does he have left to live for? Like they established that He Xuan would never kill himself and he clings onto life so stubbornly bc it was denied from him since his very birth so it's very unlikely hed die but what abt his soul dispersing? Like the grudge is mostly fulfilled so what is tying him to the world still? Likely hes still not fulfilled his anger so theres that but also I think he xuan truly wants to help others.

I think back to the parade for the scholar He Sheng and how the people prayed to him to help them get back at ppl who had wronged them in life and I think He Xuan would be happy with that. Personally, I think a really cool thing that could happen post canon is He Xuan ascending as a ghost bc we know it can happen.

Like could you imagine He Xuan ascending after being a supreme ghost king for like 600 plus years?? That would be amazing. I imagine in his original fate he was probably going to ascend as a civil god or as the wind master since that's what sqx ascended as and their fates were switched. But!! Imagine the irony if he became the next water master. Truthfully I'd love for him to get that and also become a god of vengeance. Like having that be an auxiliary thing. Like how xie lian is a martial god but also the scrap god lmao. Id like to see He Xuan as the next water tyrant but with a completely new meaning. He rules over the seas and will aid u if you pray to him to complete your vengeance. As a lot of gods ascended for one thing but also became associated with another thing (like swd and wealth, and fx and fertility LOL). I think that would be so metal.

Now the question is honestly whether he'd accept it? Part of me thinks he would jump down like Hua Cheng did but part of me thinks he might actually accept it bc that's what was owed to him in the beginning. His original fate was to ascend as a god!! I also think its be very interesting if he ascended after helping sqx in the mortal realm as again, we know that he does keep tabs on her so she doesnt die. Imagine like shes in a perilous situation and he saves her and ascends like that. I think that would be rlly cool and maybe they could reconcile as friends again bc I rlly do think they had a friendship underneath it all. (Pls note I rlly mean friendship, beef///leaf is complicated and as it stands in Canon its deeply unhealthy)

Anyways.... I just think he xuan deserves it and underneath it all he rlly is a good person and was just cornered by extreme circumstances. He rlly is an amazing person who was dealt an absolutely awful hand and I think he deserves to finally live the life he was supposed to

look @ her, omg. spotted her a few years ago in a show i never finished (tyrant fx) but came away fully obsessed with her. partly because of how ruthless her character in the show was and partly because of how stunning she is, wow. have never used her, nor seen her used in indie or otherwise but would jump at the chance to write opposite her

I love how totally evocative this sentence is. With such simple words it puts a scene straight out of a 90s preteen tv show in my head, complete with the crappy waving dream-sequence FX and all the dragons staring into the camera at the same moment. Pure gold.

He Xuan definitely got sniffed out the first time they came across him. Especially since he’s a fish/ocean themed ghost. To them, that’s extremely weird since not even the Water Tyrant smells like that.

Since he eats other what ghosts, he smells deeply inhuman. More than even Hua Cheng. They probably would’ve attacked him if SQX wasn’t with him. That’s his shield. And as a good spy and cunning man he is, he makes sure he has that shield anytime he’s in the Heavens

The fact that carrying ghost fish smell on him is what alerted the dogs is unreasonably funny to me.

I know on one level they would probably just have to be in heaven realm to pick up on what Shi Wudu smells like. But also. The idea that at some point they probably tried to get him to pet them and give them treats is very fun

The first time they see HX they’re definitely growling and barking at him. FX has to put so much effort into restraining them.

I just feel bad for SQX though. The dogs would probably love them if she wasn’t hanging out with the second most suspicious man in heaven realm all the time
