I am once again feeling emotional over Freyja getting hurt in the Swiss base explosion.

She didn’t get caught in the initial explosion as she wasn’t in that area of the building, but when the rest of the building began to crumble, she noticed that a section of the ceiling was about to fall on a couple of workers and - knowing only she could get to them in time being on skates - she launched herself forwards and pushed them out of the way, only for the falling rubble and debris to land on her instead. A large portion landed on her legs, and crushed one of them below the knee. She eventually regains consciousness but is entirely alone in the remains of the room, pinned under the rubble, and is left crying out desperately for help until her voice goes hoarse, eventually passing out again due to the concussion she sustained and the extreme agony she was in.

The next time she wakes up, she’s in a hospital bed. There was nothing they could do to save her leg, and so the doctors had obtained consent from Jóhanna and Kristján (her parents) to go ahead with amputation, as much as it pained them to give it - knowing how much grief it would cause their daughter. She wakes up, still groggy from the anaesthesia, and asks the doctors what happened. They remind her about the explosion, and as she begins to remember, she also remembers the pain she had been in. She looks down at her legs, and sees that one looks shorter than the other under the blanket. She throws it off, ignoring the doctors pleas to slow down, and when she sees the bandaged stump, it all hits her. Below the knee, her leg is gone. She completely shuts down, and everything else is a blur. All she can think about now is what the future holds for her. Would she ever be able to skate again? Would Overwatch discharge her? Was there even an Overwatch to go back to? Were her friends okay?

During her recovery period, she spends most of her day watching all of the news reports about the Swiss base explosion. She learns of Commander Morrison and Commander Reyes’s deaths. She watches footage of others being pulled from the rubble. She watches coverage of the hearings held by the UN, interviews with Overwatch agents. All of it makes her heart sink further and further. Overwatch is disbanded, and Freyja eventually returns home - but the depression remains well into her rehabilitation.

She still has nightmares about the event, and though she now accepts her prosthetic leg and has adapted to her new life, she still has bad days.

6 - freyja

06: Something that makes your character angry

There's actually very little that makes Freyja genuinely angry. She's just not a very angry person!

But she has at least once gotten frustrated with her prosthetic after it inconveniences her in some way and has thrown it across the room, fuelled by any anger she does have pent up inside as well as any self-loathing she still feels towards her situation. When at home, Elska is usually there to faithfully bring it back to her and give her comfort. If her dog isn't there, she'll grow even more frustrated at the fact she just threw one of her mobility aids across the room and now has to somehow get it back.

She'll also sometimes grow a little angry or resentful about the Swiss base explosion and everything it took away from her and everyone else, but she mainly just feels sad.

Freyja absolutely translates some idioms from her native language into English sometimes during casual conversations just to confuse people lmao-

Like when she witnesses something strange or amazing, she might say ‘there are so many wonders in a cow’s head!’ or when she has no idea what’s going on she might say ‘I come completely from the mountains’. Or when she’s describing a pleasant surprise or the highlight of a day/experience she might say it’s ‘the raisin at the end of the hot dog’ lmao-

She has also definitely slipped up whilst talking about something cute when she forgets the word by calling it ‘asshole’, bc in Icelandic the word that translates to ‘asshole’ (like, the literal body part) ‘rassgat’ is used to refer to cute things kinda like ‘kawaii’ does in Japanese sdfghjk-

To nobody’s surprise, I am once again emotional about Freyja,,

Thinking about her watching news coverage of the Swiss base explosion, the trial and Overwatch disbanding whilst she’s trying to recover from her injuries and come to terms with the fact that her entire life has been turned upside down, falling into a depression that lasts a hell of a long time not only because of the loss of her leg, but also because she lost friends and colleagues in the explosion. She’s lost her job. Her childhood dream has gone up in smoke. She can’t even return to her figure skating career because she has to relearn how to even walk after she gets her first prosthetic, not to mention how her involvement with a now disgraced organisation will make people want nothing to do with her.

Thinking about how she had no idea where the surviving members of Overwatch were now outside of occasional news stories, articles or word of mouth - having only really kept in contact with Brigitte (not that she was a member back then) and possibly Reinhardt and Torbjörn by extension, others too if plotted. With the support of her family, she does eventually find the motivation to get back out on the ice. But even as she flourishes over the years of constant practice - pulls herself out of her depression with the help of her support network and her new students - she still struggles with nightmares and survivor’s guilt, has moments where she gets frustrated with and resents her prosthetic, and all of it continues even now that she has returned to the newly reformed Overwatch.

After she finally found the motivation to relearn how to skate after losing her leg, and after regaining her talents, Freyja caught the attention of a small group of children who found themselves totally inspired by her and asked her if she could teach them how to skate too.

She was a little hesitant at first, but upon seeing the same spark in their eyes that she herself had as a child wanting to learn to skate, she eventually agreed. She started holding lessons for them, and in doing so reignited her passion for helping people.

When the kids found out that Freyja had received a recall message for previous Overwatch members, and how torn up about it she was, it was them who urged her to answer it. She had told them all about her time spent with the organisation - an organisation the kids had also looked up to growing up - and they told her she'd be stupid not to follow her heart. With her mind made up she set about making preparations, and whilst the kids were sad to lose their teacher, they ultimately believed that she was destined for greater things. Freyja left them in the hands of a friend to continue their lessons, and made a promise that she would come back to visit whenever she could.

Whenever she is able to return home to Iceland, she always makes sure to drop in and check on their progress. She recites stories of her new adventures, and brings them gifts and souvenirs. She has also asked fellow agents to sign autographs on their behalf, which they're always overjoyed to receive. The kids are like the younger siblings she never had, and she is greatly appreciative of them for giving her the nudge she needed.

I haven’t uploaded this on its own yet so I’m just putting it here for future reference- Details below for anyone interested!

I am no good whatsoever at outfit design, especially for combat outfits, but this is the best I can come up with. The prosthetic is just a placeholder to show she has one bc I’m not entirely sure how to design those either but you get the idea :”D I’m also not sure if I want the blades to look like ice skates or to keep them as inline rollerblades which she used to use pre-fall, I just don’t want her blades to look too similar to Lúcio’s-

I’m also no good with weapon design, so I have absolutely no idea how they would work scientifically, but it is what it is lmao. My idea was to incorporate them into those long gloves that are made from a material that will protect her skin from the fire and frost, with the face mask being there to protect against the fumes they might give off.

She’s kinda supposed to be like a damage-support hybrid in the field. Not supporting with healing (unless I have her carry around medical supplies), but instead by applying burn and freeze/slow debuffs to enemies. She works best when she’s able to quickly breeze past enemies and freeze their legs so they can’t move, or set fire to block off their exit, that kind of thing. She’s not really there to steal the spotlight and do huge damage, she’s more so there to set things up for her comrades - she’ll fight enemies one-on-one if she has to, but with her speed and agility she tries to go where she’s needed and not linger in one place for too long.

She has an Icelandic Sheepdog called Elska who means the absolute world to her.

Freyja managed to train her to fetch things from around the house during her recovery period and she still does it even though her owner can move around freely now. She was like Freyja’s rock and helped motivate her to get back on her feet so she could take her for walks and stuff. Having a dog to take care of definitely helped distract her from everything that had happened with Overwatch and helped to put her in a better state of mind.

When she’s not at home in Iceland, Elska stays at her parents’ house until she returns. She absolutely goes around showing pictures of her to everyone who will indulge her and often holds videocalls with her parents to see her when she’s away.

When she first joined as an intern, Freyja absolutely got distracted seeing Overwatch heroes in the flesh and ended up skating into walls or doors more than once.

Freyja might be better at dancing gracefully on ice but she has definitely at least once jammed out to music at base on her inline skates when she thought nobody was watching her lmao

META   + memories , for Freyja

Freyja has a lot of memories from her days with pre-fall Overwatch. Not all are good, since she joined when things were starting to go downhill, but the ones that are good are precious to her.

She often thinks back to her early days, when she would make a fool out of herself meeting her heroes for the first time. She thinks about how Reinhardt took her under his wing and looked out for her, supported her when she questioned if she really belonged there. She thinks about all of the coffee runs and the messenger tasks, and the time she had to deliver paperwork to Blackwatch during one of their meetings - the stares had intimidated her, but it was funny looking back on it. She remembers meeting and befriending Brigitte, singing along to old ABBA songs whilst Torbjörn looked on in amusement.

These and more are moments she holds dear, moments that shaped Overwatch into something of a second family for her. But not all of her memories are pleasant.

She remembers Overwatch coming under scrutiny after the Venice mission. She remembers Captain Amari being presumed KIA. She remembers Commander Morrison and Commander Reyes' constant arguments, tensions reaching a boiling point, and she remembers the explosion - as well as everything that came after.

These are the memories that made her reluctant to answer the recall. What was stopping these things from happening again? However, the memories of when things had been good gave her hope that things could be good again. That those who returned and those newly joined could create new memories together. She keeps all of these memories - good and bad - with her, so that she can look back and see how far she has come, and picture how far she is yet to go.
