*Wingfeather Saga book spoilers and episode 4 spoilers*
Just thinking about how Peet probably sees both himself and his brother in Janner and Tink. Like, his reactions to them in episode 4 really made me think about this. Especially because I headcanon that while Janner looks more like Esben, Tink acts like Esben. I don’t think the boys are exactly like Artham and Esben were as kids (largely because Janner and Tink grew up in an oppressed society with venomous lizard overlords and Artham and Esben grew up free) but I think Janner’s personality is probably similar to what Artham’s was as a child and Tink’s is similar to how Esben was as a child, with the main difference being that from what little we know of Artham and Esben before the war, Artham seemed to be generally down for Esben’s shenanigans and pranks whereas Janner often tries to derail Tink’s (which goes back to that what kind of society they were raised in thing- Janner doesn’t have the freedom to let his little brother get into trouble or get into trouble with him because doing so could mean being taken away by the Black Carriage or death).
So how this all manifests for Peet when the kids are following him back to his treehouse is contained neatly in two reactions of his, I think. First, when Tink asks if they can do the “vine thing” again, Peet does this:
and I just wonder if for a second he heard his little brother asking him that instead of Tink, especially because this reaction is similar (though less intense) to when he sees Esben’s sword and when Tink says his name later. And we know his mind is unstable, so did it just glitch for a second and he heard/saw his little brother, little baby Esben, instead of Tink? because like, that would be both adorable and so, so sad.
Second is his reaction to Janner asking him questions:
I feel like he responds a little better to Janner because Janner’s a little more like he was as a kid and while he looks more like Esben he doesn’t sound like him and it doesn’t evoke the same reaction. He also has a connection with Janner in that they’re both Throne Wardens (tho Janner doesn’t know it yet) whereas Tink is the king (like Esben was) and therefore more likely to remind Peet of his “failure”.
And then he just stop and looks straight at Janner and gives him this little smile and says his name so softly and clearly and I just-
I feel like at that moment he’s seeing his little brother too, but like, in a good way. He’s looking at Janner and seeing both his nephew whom he loves and, in Janner’s curiosity and questions, he sees Esben and himself as children. He’s allowing himself, for just a brief moment, to remember something good, that he loves this little boy and that once upon a time he and his brother were like that too.
Anyway, I just have a lot of feelings, I hope you enjoyed my rambling about this and that it made any sense
Oh, and P.S., if you’re wondering who I think Leeli reminds him of, sweet, kind, forgiving, compassionate, lover of animals and growing things, little Leeli
I think she reminds him of Aurendelle.
