I'm just telling you this. If you go to the Koopaling Oc tag, go to latest and scroll down a bit, there is this oc by someone named captain-sharkie, that looks a LOT like Dalex. Both with human and koopa designs. I don't know if you were aware and i don't know if they copied of they made look similar by mistake without realizing, but they look REALLY similar to Dal and I thought someone should let you know if you didn’t already. Have a good day, bye!
No, I wasn't aware. But looking at the OC in question, apparently named Dusty, I can see that you weren't exaggerating, they look a LOT like Dal. At least, the human version does.
I'm not gonna run in screaming "YOU COPIED ME!!!1!11!!" though... while the human form is similar, the Koopa form... not so much? The haircut is different, they've got freckles all over (which Dal does not have), not even the shades of purple (hair) and brown (scales/body) match what I use for Dal (and even then that's reversed), and while their necklace has a swirl just like Dal's Shade Sprite, it's very clearly not a Shade/Shine Sprite at all.
I can't find anything about Dusty lore-wise apart from the post you mentioned, where they appear to be apologizing to Ludwig because they don't want "something" to happen again, so no case of copied backstories here, either. Dal's never had to betray Lud out of fear of some unfortunate event, he usually just gets brainwashed or turned into an alien zombie.
I think I'm just gonna play it safe and assume this is a case of "looks similar by chance." It happens.
Plus, from the looks of it Sharkie's only posted... well, that one post. Dusty's design may change again the next time they show up, who knows?
#axewchao answers#axewchao chitchat#perch-the-cat#if i'm wrong then I'll talk to Sharkie about it#but I sincerely hope that I'm right and that this is just a coincidence-#mostly because I don't like confrontation but also because I'm genuinely kinda curious about Dusty's whole deal?#like what are they scared of- why are they apologizing to Ludwig? are they about to FIGHT him in that picture Sharkie drew?#I don't want a potentially interesting story to get thrown away because I said 'you copied me' and they opt to just scrap EVERYTHING#of course I have no way of knowing how Sharkie will react if this happens but still-

The One Where Kenny Is Jealous
summary; Niko and Kenny had an argument, Niko tried to calm Kenny down because his lover is jealous
warning; none
author notes; wrote this like months ago lmao and since i am barely active nowadays i decided to post it though i really dislike this fanfic 😭
—<3—
Kenny and Niko had been dating since last year, and the journey had been great for the two. For your information, it was Niko who confessed first.
"You know what? YOLO. You know what that means? You Only Live Once. So, Kenny, I have liked you since day one and I don't care how you will react because You Only—"
"Niko shut up, I like you too."
"Oh."
Though, they didn't reveal it to the public, or their friends. They had to act straight and not bring any suspicion. Yet, some of their friends had suspected something was going on between them but they managed to get away with it eventually.
These two have the healthiest relationship of all, they are everything you could ask for.
However, even though their relationship is healthy, they'd fight too, like a normal couple of course. Who never had fights with their partner anyway? But it's understandable if you never did, I’m guessing you might be single.
When fighting, Kenny would do most of the talking, yelling, and screaming. "They were touching you! Trying to seduce you! And you just let it happen?!" Kenny yells out with anger, he is jealous. And you might be asking, how did the fight start?
—
It was a lovely day to start. Sharky, Aj, and Chunkz decided to head off to a restaurant to fill their stomach since everyone in the house refused to cook. Typical Beta Squad.
After they left the house, Kenny and Niko took this opportunity to go on a movie date.
They drove off by taxi and arrived at the cinema on time. Everything was going pretty well and that was until two girls came up to them and greeted them.
They expect that they only wanted pictures with them, but no.
After taking pictures with them, one of the girls who is a Niko girlie has no shame and flirted with Niko. She was touchy there and touchy that, with no boundaries at all. Meanwhile, Kenny, who is secretly Niko's boyfriend, stays silent while witnessing his boyfriend get seduced.
His blood was boiling hot yet he managed to keep smiling.
I am so dead. Was the first thing Niko thought of when seeing Kenny's insincere smile.
—
With Kenny screaming and yelling to his face, the poor man Niko could only stay silent and patient. He knew if he tried to fight back it would make everything more worse. Their relationship could break apart and Niko doesn't want that to happen. He doesn't want to lose his Kenny.
It was his fault anyway, why would he let them touch him? He's so stupid, such an idiot, such a schmu—
With a sigh, Niko could only think of ways to make the shorter ones calm. The last time they fought, Niko calms Kenny down by giving him a hug in the middle of the talking and it works. It made Kenny melt into the hug.
But that was when they fought about something stupid, right now, we're talking about jealousy.
With that, Niko gathered his courage and decided to... shush Kenny. That's the only thing he could think of. Stupid but he hopes that it works.
"Nikolas Omilana! Are you even—" Kenny fell silent by Niko who had his index finger placed on Kenny's lips while he shushed him.
"Ssh sh shh, enough. I'm all yours, okay? I'm all yours." And that sends butterflies to Kenny's stomach. His cheeks are burning hot and his lips curved into a smile. He couldn't help but melt like ice cream when Niko unexpectedly did that.
Kenny went from shouting to letting out his heartwarming laugh. It was nice to hear it again. Niko thought with a smile on his face, he was glad that it worked. Besides, Niko's touch is Kenny's weakness after all.
Niko let out a small chuckle and removed his index finger from Kenny's lip. "God, you always make me blush so damn much. I hate you." Kenny stated, hitting Niko lightly on the chest.
The taller man smiled cheekily, he tilted Kenny's chin up and pressed his lips against his.

Twst x Pokémon Pt. 3
This is a part 3 of the last Pokémon post I did, this time with the vice dorm leaders. Sorry this is so late, I’ve been feeling under the weather recently But I’m starting to feel better now.
Request/idea received from this Anon
Babysitting their crush’s Pokémon while they’re away. However, that task has proven more difficult than expected.
Trey Clover ♣️
Trey was both delighted and nervous when you asked him to babysit Slurpuff. He had only hoped it wouldn’t be as troublesome as certain glutinous monster cat, although he had to admit he was curious. Slurpuff looked so soft and squishy! It couldn’t be that much of a handful could it?
Well needless to say, Slurpuff was actually very helpful in the kitchen. It’s unique sense of smell helped pick the best ingredients and it was more than happy to aid in assembling the treats for the Unbirthday Party, nudging Trey to taste the batter. It reminded Trey of his little siblings back home, how they’d always try and sneak a piece.
However, it all went downhill once the part started. One by one everyone’s cakes and cookies disappeared without a trace. Unaware of the pink Pokémon sneakily using Physic to float the wonderful pastries into its mouth. But it’s cover was blown when it tried to steal Riddle’s tart, and Trey had to step in before the poor little thing lost its head.
Ruggie Bucchi 🐾
Better hope Ruggie doesn’t eat your precious little bundle of wool, might be hard to hold himself back. Shi shi shi, he’s only kidding! He wouldn’t do that to you! Unfortunately, Wooloo seemed to take that very personally and rolled away! It hadn’t even been 5 minutes and Ruggie was already chasing it down!
Poor Wooloo; perhaps leaving it in a dorm full of hungry carnivores wasn’t the greatest idea. Because it zoomed all over the place, trying to flee from any large beastmen. Though I’m sure it looked hilarious seeing the vice dorm leader chasing after a living pillow. Ruggie eventually needed Jack’s help in catching the little guy, and it surprisingly took a liking to the first year!
Wooloo was all over Jack, hiding behind his legs and nuzzling into his bushy tail. Peering at Ruggie with big nervous eyes. He hadn’t planned for this, Ruggie wanted to show you just how responsible he was all on his own, that included caring for your pet. But it couldn’t be helped. Jack hadn’t planned to babysit, but it seemed he had no other choice.
Jade Leech 🐬
(I love Psyduck so much 🥰)
Now Psyduck here is a bit of a special case, so you were a bit hesitant to leave it with Jade. Now there was nothing to worry about, Jade makes sure your Psyduck is well taken care of, he’ll pamper it to perfection. He has claimed he enjoys serving others. Although it appears Psyduck is a rather sensitive creature. But that just makes things more interesting, plus it’s adorable to boot.
Constantly rubbing it’s head, it takes in its surroundings rather slowly. It barely realized you left the room and was just recently waddling around looking for you, poor dear. 😅 Well this shouldn’t be a problem; playtime with rubber duckies, drawing a bath, Jade makes sure Psyduck is in top shape until you get back! However, there was one mishap Jade wasn’t preparing for.
It takes special skill to escape Jade’s well trained eye, and Psyduck just happened to find that perfect moment. Before it knocked into Jade’s terrarium, spilling out all kinds of plants and muck onto the floor with a big bump on its head. It was an accident, but Psyduck couldn’t shake that sudden glare in the eel’s eye. Not even when Jade rubbed its bruised head affectionately.
Floyd Leech 🦈
Oh boy, Gible was not happy about you leaving. Especially leaving its care to a stranger like Floyd. It stomped around and grumbled like a fussy toddler, aggressive to anyone that came near it. While everyone was afraid of getting their hand chewed off, Floyd remained as careless and as brave as ever. So Shrimpy left this little sharkie to be his playmate? How fun!
Gible did not want to play with Floyd, it tried making that as clear as possible. Playing basketball? Deflated. Some squeaky toys? Shredded to pieces. Dancing? It chomped the radio to bits. A yummy platter? Scarfed it down, plate and all. Floyd was clearly losing his patience and started to shift into one of his outrageously random mood swings.
Talk about bad timing when you have an angry Gible pouting across the room. Floyd, now upset the Pokémon wasn’t accepting his friendship, made the mistake of trying to squeeze it. Gible bit him 😬. Chomped right down on his hand, but suprisingly Floyd was fine. It did take Azul and Jade awhile to pry it off, then to keep Floyd from biting back! Hopefully, you’ll return soon before the Lounge ends up in shambles.
Jamil Viper 🐍
Honestly Jamil thinks your Salandit is super cool. Sly and cunning with a streak of mystery, it reminds him of himself. (You smug snake 😑) It was almost the perfect pet for himself, a powerful on way that. Now I’m sure Jamil has some experience with animals, he is Kalim’s right hand man and a servant of the Asim family, the kid knows a thing or two about parades.
So it’s a cake walk babysitting Salandit, at least for the most part. Pokémon are unpredictable creatures and unknown to Twisted Wonderland, so Jamil’s in for a big surprise when Salandit starts dripping actual v e n o m. The red liquid oozes out of its mouth as it starts to burn small holes in the carpet. Of course panics because, that carpet is expensive! And why did you have such a creature in your possession!
He was not prepared for this. Apparently it was having a scuffle with Kalim’s magic carpet, the piece of matting simply wanted to play with Scarabia’s new guest, but the poisonous fire-type took it as a threat instead. Chasing each other around like wild dogs. Reacting quickly, Jamil put it outside using Snake Whisper before things escalated, but decided to give you a call.
Rook Hunt 🏹
You thought Jade was pampering, Rook is over the moon for this fairy type! What a wonderful creature, absolutely beautiful! Rook is completely captivated by the fairy-like creature, the pure pink essence of love in its true form!~ As he puts it anyways. 😅 Rook will smother Sylveon with attention!
He’ll groom it to perfection and flaunt it to the entire dorm, this of course draws some attention. No one has ever seen a creature quite like Sylveon, with its sweet voice and flowing ribbons. And you left Rook himself in charge to take care of it isn’t that wonderful! ~ ✨ This basically turned into one big photo shoot, with Rook at the center gushing over his new friend.
He even takes Sylveon out on a hunt stroll with him. Man cries when it wraps it’s ribbons around it’s wrist. Let’s just hope no rowdy students make fun of their little adventure, they’ll have a merciless arrow drawn back ready to face them. Rook won’t tolerate gossiping, no one is allowed to tarnish the beauty you and your partner share together.
Ortho Shroud 🤖
Ortho was more than happy to take care of Pikachu for you! He was the one that actually accepted in the first place. It was just so cute and round and soft and friendly, a perfect companion for our little Ortho! Plus, he was really excited to analyze it for his database. Although, in reality he took this opportunity to get Idia out of his shell and help him.
Humans and animals were already a well known subject Ortho knew plenty about, even a few beasts were a well known species. So a loveable Pokémon shouldn’t serve a problem. While Idia wasn’t all that excited about watching a living, breathing, messy pet (virtual pets were much easier) Ortho was not having it and saw this as a good experience.
Playtime was his favorite, Pikachu was just so fast and full of energy. Zipping back and forth with a Quick Attack to chase the bouncy ball, or using its tail to play catch. It was such a cheerful little sunshine, it even shocked Ortho a bit with its cheeks. Emitting little sparks of electricity, which felt really nice. They’re both just so cute together, Idia snuck a few pictures of them napping together.
Lilia Vanrouge 🍷
Another child for Lilia to adopt!! Oh how precious! Immediately Lilia’s fawning over your cute Noibat, however, you tell Lilia to be careful as this Pokémon is quite young. Of course Lilia heads your warning and bids you a graceful farewell, before rushing off with the cutie in his arms to flaunt to his whole dorm.
Almost immediately Lilia’s going to test his cooking skills; a growing boy like that needs to eat right? Well don’t worry, chef Lilia will whip up something nice, which of course has Noibat cheering for a hot meal. The trio of terrified fae and their drowsy human: they couldn’t have Lilia kill off something so precious, you’d be heartbroken!
However, perhaps they were a bit too slow in stopping Lilia, because thanks to his magic he had already whipped up a horrendous looking hole of soup. But what had everyone’s jaws dropping was that Noibat enjoyed it! It even cooed for seconds, nudging Lilia with the bowl. Of course Lilia was over the moon, he’ll have to ask to babysit more often.

Headcanon: A week without you
You plan to set out on a week-long trip with Anna, Kiki and Willow.
How do the guys react to the news and cope during your absence?
🌹VICTOR🌹
Before you leave
As the day of your long-awaited trip approaches, you can barely rein in your excitement
Meanwhile, Victor gets more and more grumpy
“Are you sure you should be going on a trip at this time?”
“Wouldn’t your company end up in shambles with half the staff gone?”
“Goldman informed me that your ticket is refundable.”
Despite his attempts to stop you from leaving his side for the trip, he also sees how much you’ve been looking forward to it
So he eventually relents, and even offers suggestions to include in your list of itinerary
Victor isn’t the type to show affection in public, so you’re surprised when he suddenly wraps his fingers around your wrist at the airport
He lifts it up gently, strapping a wine-coloured watch onto your wrist
It has an incredibly cute design - the face of the watch features an adorable white bunny, with its tiny paws pointing towards the time
“Whenever you look at it, you’ll know that I’m waiting for you to come home.”
(Meanwhile, Anna, Kiki and Willow are standing at the side and screaming internally)
During the trip
He understands how rare it is for you to have a proper break, so he doesn’t disturb you unnecessarily
In fact, you are the one who disturbs him at 3am when his phone gets flooded with photographs of your trip, each one accompanied with a notification chime
Luckily for you, he doesn’t mind it too much
He sighs while scrolling through the photos with a look of affection
“That dummy forgot about the time zone differences.”
Once you’re back
Brings you to Souvenir and whips up a FEAST
Ends the magnificent meal with a dessert you’ve never seen before
“I created it in the week you were gone. Let me know what you think.”
It’s a petite, cube-shaped cake layered with Chantilly cream and drizzled with chocolate, a rose petal resting on top of it
You bring the dessert fork to your mouth
It tastes sweet, but there’s also slight tinge of bitterness that gives it a certain mellow flavour
“I’ll give it an A+, as expected of the finest chef in Loveland City. Is this going to be a new item on Souvenir’s menu?”
“Yes.”
“What is it called?”
He pauses before answering.
“The Taste of Longing.”
You suddenly feel a little shy, and try to change the topic. You hand him the fork.
“H-have you tried it?”
He lets out a sigh, sets the fork aside, and pulls you into a deep, intoxicating kiss
After he draws back, he stares at your flustered expression and responds with the smug grin you missed so dearly over the past week
“I just did.”
🌻KIRO🌻
Before you leave
The day before the trip, he literally refuses to let you go
Especially after he realises he wouldn’t get to see you off at the airport in person due to a scheduled interview
So he has been latching onto your arm and following you everywhere
“I need to use the bathroom Kiro.”
“I’ll keep my eyes closed, I promise!”
As the dusk settles in and the hours left together dwindles, Kiro grows quieter
His head is resting on your lap as he stares at you intently, as though engraving your face into his memory
You try to cheer him up, tousling his golden blonde hair
“On the bright side, you’ll have the bed all to yourself!”
Kiro brightens up for split second before his expression returns to a pout
“It’s not fun when you’re not in it...”
During the trip
Tries to cope by stuffing himself with tidbits and ice-cream
Savin does not approve.
But snacks don’t taste as good when he doesn’t have you to share them with (or snatch them from)
Tries to cope by playing games past midnight
Savin does not approve.
But games aren’t as fun when he doesn’t hear your voice congratulating him for achieving a new high score
Tries to cope by drowning himself in work
Savin approves... but senses that something is off with Kiro
Savin spends more time with Kiro this week, even bringing him to his favourite hotpot place and treating him to extra desserts
Once you’re back
You decide to surprise Kiro in the studio after receiving a bunch of texts from a worried Savin
Kiro almost bursts into tears
He might not have Gavin’s Evol, but that doesn’t stop him from flying across the room to wrap you in a bear hug, almost tripping over his violin case in the process
After dinner, you’re both on the couch as he listens to you ramble on and on about how fun the trip was
Kiro interrupts you with a long, impatient kiss
After he pulls away, the both of you a little breathless, the cheeky glint in his eyes doesn’t go unnoticed
“You want fun? I’ll show you just how much fun we can have together.”
🎐GAVIN🎐
Before you leave
Even though you’re used to spending long periods of time apart given the nature of his work, it never gets easier
“Maybe I could come along as a bodyguard?”
As tempted as you are at the prospect, you turn him down gently
It’s meant to be an all-girls trip after all
At the airport, Gavin goes into full-blown maternal mode:
“Remember to check the weather forecast every morning.”
“Yes Officer Gavin.”
“Remember to apply sunscreen before going outdoors.”
“Yes Officer Gavin.”
“Remember to sleep early.”
“Yes Officer Gavin.”
He sighs and encases you in a long hug, pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
“And remember... to think of me often.”
You almost tear up in response to the sheer sadness in his voice
“That’s not something I need to remember. It happens naturally.”
During the trip
He’s not used to returning to a quiet, lifeless house
Sends you little updates about his day
[Text from Gavin:] Saw the stars on my way home tonight. Even though you’re halfway across the world, I feel as though I can sense you, just like how we can still see the faraway stars.
[Text from Gavin:] I saw a squirrel today. It’s cute. It reminded me of you.
[Text from Gavin:] Hung out with Minor today. He told me how lonely he feels in the office these days without you girls around. Seems like we finally found something in common. I miss you.
Purchases a succulent and places it beside Thorny because he doesn’t want it to feel lonely
He names it Mrs Thorny
Once you’re back
Arrives at the airport at least an hour early to wait for you
Sends Anna, Kiki and Willow home by car as a gesture of gratitude for taking care of you over the past week
“He’s a keeper,” whispers Anna.
Helps you unpack while you take a bath
Chances upon the overtly sensual lingerie you bought during the trip (thanks to Kiki’s persuasive skills)
You happen to step out of the bathroom at this very moment, watching as Gavin lifts the dark blue lace from the luggage
The blood drains from your face as you scramble to snatch it out of his hands
“Ahh! That’s meant for your birthday!”
Poor Birdcop is still reeling from shock
So he responds with whatever comes to mind
“For me? But I don’t wear lingerie.”
The both of you just stare at each other, processing this whole situation
It’s not long before every corner of the house gets filled with your laughters mingling together
Both your faces flushed from a mixture of embarrassment and laughter, you collapse into his embrace, soaking up his warmth...
...and you’re finally home.
⚡️SHAW⚡️
Before you leave
You kind of expected Shaw’s response when you told him about your plans...
“Sure, have fun.”
“You aren’t even going to pretend that you’d miss me?”
“Nah, it’s not like you’d be gone for a decade. Pretty sure I’ll survive.”
He does skip his morning class to send you off at the airport though
His heart suddenly feels the slightest bit heavier once you disappear from view with the girls in the departure hall
Shrugs it off and heads back to school
During the trip
While Shaw isn’t the clingy sort, he does get bored easily
Especially since his partner in crime isn’t around
Sends you pictures of the shark plushie in different poses
e.g. sitting upright on the dining chair
[Text from Shaw:] Sharkie says he misses you. Gave him a talk on how to be a big, independent boy.
e.g. leaning against a spray paint can
[Text from Shaw:] Sharkie tried spray-painting today but got a little bit of paint on himself. Do you know if he’s machine washable?
e.g. wearing one your hairbands
[Text from Shaw:] Sharkie rummaged through your wardrobe today. Doesn’t he look handsome?
Changes his phone’s lockscreen to a different picture of you every day
Of course, he selects photos that should never see the light of day - a picture of your mouth wide open in an unladylike manner as you prepare to bite into a hamburger, a picture of you almost falling off a skateboard, a picture of you sleeping with drool trailing from the corner of your mouth onto the sheets...
You really need to do a thorough cleansing of his photo gallery.
Since his usual source of entertainment is enjoying herself without him halfway across the globe, this is as close as he gets to having fun
Once you’re back
The moment you set down your luggage at home, he drags you to Live House
The intense strobe lights shroud the way Shaw gazes at you with a rare tenderness
Immersed in the loud music, you have no idea that clouds have gathered outside, followed by the gentle patter of rain
You almost miss Shaw’s words as his lips brush against your ear
“I missed you.”
🦋LUCIEN🦋 (I’m not kidding when I say I can’t write Lucien. For all of our sakes, this shall be the first and last time 😂)
Before you leave
Takes you to see the fireflies
Catches one and names it “Angst”
During your trip
Exists sadly
Attempts to make conversation with Angst
When you’re back
Exists happily
Sets Angst free since his favourite butterfly has returned to his side

‘Cold’ Chapter Ten
Word Count: 2,927
Rating 18+
Spring time in Hope county was wonderful, finally after all those cold, dark months the weather was getting warm. The trees around Holland Valley was getting greener by the day, farmers' fields were growing tall with hay. Birds that had migrated down south for the winter were slowly returning to give Montana back their sweet serenade. But, the warmer weather meant the Peggies were getting active again.
The cult had been hammering the Resistance for over a month with planes, boats, trucks, anything they could get their hands on. John has tried to take his ranch back, and was almost successful until the Deputy blew up one of his planes. Tensions were rising as the Resistance gained more and more members. Both sides were getting antsy but neither side was making any ground.
The Deputy's health wasn't what it used to be. Over the winter she'd gotten even skinner and had pneumonia for two weeks. Adelaide forced her to stay at her and Xander's place while she was sick. Which had absolutely no affect on Adelaide constantly flirting with Xander, quite graphically. The Deputy hated feeling like she was taking advantage of Adelaide and Xander's hospitality but anytime she talked about leaving Adelaide would lock the front door and hide the key in her bra.
So she stayed until she recovered. In that time she discovered that cookies were just about the only thing Adelaide could make without burning, under cooking or over-salting it. She loved Adelaide but it was a major relief for the Deputy to get out of that house.
The people that most often noticed that the Deputy was getting weaker was Kim and Grace. Both of them could see how worn out she was. After the pneumonia she still felt tired for the rest of the month, making it harder to concentrate and function. Sharky noticed too but anytime he'd say anything to the Deputy she just shook her head and told him she was fine. The daily hammering of the cult was really hard, not only on the Deputy's body but also on her psyche.
She would get irritated faster, became more ruthless, and let her anger control her before she'd finally calm down. It was dangerous, especially to anyone that crossed her, and everyone could see that.
One particular day the Deputy had to have some alone time, and the Whitetail mountains were the perfect place to have some. So she trudged off alone and just parked her truck on the side of the road somewhere. She made her way through the woods, not really knowing where she was going. All she knew was that if she had to hear Hurk and Adelaide argue or Grace and Jess bicker or Sharky and Hurk arguing then she would probably flip out and she wanted to actively avoid that.
The Deputy found a nice little lake to sit by, and so she sat. She didn't feel like fishing, she actually only felt like sleeping, but she knew she wouldn't be able to just sleep. Jacob was pretty upset with her for shooting down his helicopters last week so she'd been keeping her eyes peeled for any hunters.
Even if she had to look over her shoulder every two seconds it was nice to get away from everything. The mountain air was refreshing but the Deputy knew that wasn't enough. She was tired, she just wanted the fighting to be over. She knew she could never leave so she had to stay until the end, whenever that may be.
She caught her reflection in the clear water. She looked like hell. Her nose had a big partially-healed gash across it, she had a black eye, a busted lip and dirt on her face. She certainly looked how she felt, but she just dipped her hands in the cold water and wiped off her face, hoping it would help with the swelling.
Snapping her out of her thoughts was a hail of gun fire. She heard screaming in the distance and knew there was trouble. Of course there was trouble, why wouldn't there be trouble?
The Deputy followed the sound of screaming and found a bloody scene. Two of Jacob's hunters had their weapons drawn on two civilian campers, another one was dead at their feet. The Deputy crouched down and got out her sniper rifle, hoping she'd have enough time to pick those two hunters off before they killed anyone else. She could hear the civilians pleading for their lives, they begged for the hunters to let them go. That sound, that sound was what haunted the Deputy every night. That was the sound of the people she couldn't save, and the people that she did save that didn't want to be saved.
She lined up her rifle and aimed right for the hunger on the left. The sound of the gun going off made the hunters react, but not in time for them to run. They were both dead in less than twenty seconds leaving the civilians confused but grateful.
The Deputy stood up from her cover and made her way over to the civilians. She shouldered her rifle and checked the hunters' pockets for anything useful.
"Who are you?" The civilians asked. It was a dad and two kids, only the son was the one that had been killed.
"That's not important, come on you guys need to go." The Deputy ushered and checked the son's pulse. Nothing.
"W-we don't know where to go!" The daughter exclaimed, she couldn't have been older than 14. She stared at the Deputy with horror in her small eyes, not only horror that those hunters had killed her brother but by how casually the Deputy and killed them.
The Deputy kept her head on a swivel, keeping her eyes open for any Peggies that might have been close by. "Listen, anywhere is better than here. Take him and get out of here before it's too late." She ordered and the people seemed weary to take her advice.
She looked like hell and that was helpful in the civilians' decision making. The Deputy hefted her gun, keeping guard over the boy's body while they quickly packed their campsite into their pickup truck.
One of the hunter's radios crackled. It was a check-in, great now when they didn't respond the Peggies would now something happened to them and would send in more.
"You guys may want to hurry up, we've got Peggies inbound." The Deputy pressured the people and they shoved everything they could into totes in the back of their truck. The Deputy could hear a truck off in the distance and got antsy. The people finished packing away their things and went to go move the boy. "I got his shoulders." The Deputy said and shouldered her rifle again. She hooked her arms under the boy's armpits and lifted in sync with the dad. They brought him to the truck and laid him in the back.
The Deputy turned to the people. "If you follow this road until you reach the highway then you'll be good to leave the valley, don't stop for anybody, not until you're a long way from this place. Promise me that you won't stop, turn around or slow down until you're in the clear?" She asked and the dad nodded wearily. He looked towards the back seat where he son laid, and to the front seat where his daughter was crying.
"I wish I'd never come here." He admitted.
The nearing sound of tires screeching made the Deputy nervous. "Me too. Now you guys need to go." She opened the door for him and helped him into the truck. She shut the door behind him. "Remember follow this road, no stopping. I'm sorry." The Deputy apologized to the people and stepped away from their truck. She waited for them to drive away and ducked off into the woods, trying to run away from the sound of Peggies.
She'd stolen the radio off of one of the dead hunters so that she could hear where they were. The found the campsite but after no one was there they fanned out, trying to look for someone on foot.
When the Deputy decided she was far enough away from the Peggies she stopped by a rock. The Peggies has stopped talking on the radio, that hopefully meant that they were too far away from the Deputy for her to be able to hear them.
When she stopped moving anger over took the Deputy. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks as she crouched down to the ground. Those hunters murdered an innocent kid, someone who didn't even have a connection to this place. The Deputy cursed and punched the ground, finding it helped release her anger she kept punching the ground, ignoring the pain that was flourishing across her knuckles.
Punching didn't help with the tears or with the Deputy's anger towards the Peggies. All it did was wear her knuckles raw. "Fuck this place...fuck this place." She kept muttering over and over again, pressing her hands to either side of her head. Flooded with memories of other dead bodies the Deputy couldn't handle it. She screamed into her sleeve, still being careful not to attract any Peggies. Her anger quickly turned to sadness and immense sorrow. The guilt that hung on her shoulders weighed her down so much she could barely breath.
Everything she did, everything she has done, it hasn't done a damn thing. She hasn't stopped the cult, she just made it more difficult for them to move. She hasn't brought peace back to the people of Hope County, if anything she'd brought about more suffering. She felt totally and completely useless.
She was crying when the radio next to her crackled. "Do you see her too?" A voice asked.
Immediately it was scorned. "You dumbass, what if she has a radio?" She did have a radio and the sound of it made her grab her pack off the ground and book it.
She ran out from the behind her rock and instantly gunfire broke out around her. Bullets whirred over her head, all trying their best to strike her but she was too fast. She dashed across a clearing and dove into the trees. As she ran she could hear the sound of shouting and orders being barked to follow her. She kept running until she realized what happened.
She'd ran right into a steep mountainside with no way out. The walls of the mountainside were sheer rock that would be impossible to climb, but when she turned around she could hear Peggies closing in. She was trapped. She could try to fight her way through but with the number of Peggies it would be unlikely she'd survive.
However, the alternative was surrender and there was no way in hell that would happen. So the only other option was fighting. The Deputy got herself ready and grabbed her automatic rifle, hoping that and her pistol would be enough to keep the Peggies at bay. She backed up to the wall and tried to look for any Peggies hiding in the trees.
Everything was quiet, until ten Peggies leapt out of the trees. The Deputy opened fire and tagged two but they got up and kept fighting. Their numbers were immense and overpowering but the Deputy was angry. She didn't stop shooting until her clip ran out then they pounced on her.
She tried to fight them off with her bat but one hit her from behind with the stock of his gun. Another hit her across the face with a pipe. They landed kicks on her chest and her stomach and her back knocking her out completely. She couldn't even fight back enough to yell, all she could do was stop fighting.
She woke up in a dark room with a bag over her head. Her arms were tied down to a chair and so were her legs. She tried to tug against her restraints but to no avail. Her whole body ached, her head pounded in her skull. Her ribs were sore and she could taste blood. She didn't even have to remember being out in that forest to know that she had the shit beat out of her.
Her breaths came out with a tattered rattle. She sat in waiting, waiting for what she assumed to come true.
"You're finally awake." A familiar gruff voice walked into the room.
Just as she thought, it was Jacob. She couldn't see him through the bag but she could hear his heavy boots making their way over to her. He put a hand on either arm of the chair, squeezing into her forearms. In an instant the bag was ripped off her head, revealing Jacob's face only a foot away from hers.
He studied her face, she didn't know what he was looking for but she glared right back at him. "You look like shit." He admitted, a hint of a grin on his face.
"You can thank your boys for me." She growled and Jacob let out a small laugh.
"You don't know when to quit do you?" Jacob asked rhetorically, steeping away from her chair. "You also don't know how to not do stupid shit alone." He continued and the Deputy just sat there in silence.
Jacob turned away from the Deputy, turning back to her when he walked to the edge of the room. "Deputy, do you have any idea how bad you are at decision making? You prioritize every life above your own, you never act to survive you always act to serve. That is why the Resistance is taking advantage of you." He monologued and the Deputy didn't meet his eyes. "Look at you, you're broken. Your body is failing you, you take every bullet for those people and they still ask you to do more. They ask you to do everything because you are strong, because they are weak."
Jacob walked slowly closer to her, intensifying his words to match his presence. "How long are you going to last, Deputy? Hm? How long will it take you to realize those people don't give a shit about you?"
"I'm doing fine, Jacob. Are you sure you're not talking about yourself-"
"Stop!" Jacob raised his voice. It was the first time she'd ever heard him shout when it wasn't at his men. He took a moment to compose himself and looked back at the Deputy. "You know I have cameras all over this region, you know I can watch your every move, so why do you still lie to me? Why does it matter so much to you that you pretend everything's ok when it's not?" His tone was angry but not like he wanted to hurt her. His anger sounded more like...concern?
"I made promises." The Deputy defended herself and Jacob shook his head.
"Your promises aren't special. Do you know what happens if something happens to you? Those people will mourn the loss of your help, burn your body, and then find someone else to replace you. You are not part of some family, you're a fighter that's doing their dirty work. Don't you get tired of it? Tired of the fighting?"
To be honest she was sick of fighting. Her body was failing her and she was tired all the time but she couldn't let Jacob get into her head.
"I'm in this fight till the end." The Deputy said, irony was overwhelming when she broke out into a coughing fit. She spit blood out onto the floor and gave Jacob a death glare.
"You're in over your head, Deputy. And I'm going to prove it to you. When you finally fall, I'll be right here waiting." Jacob walked over to her, pulling the music box out from behind his back.
"No...no more trials." The Deputy begged and Jacob leaned down to her eye level.
"I'm the one that decides when this is over." He said and cranked the music box. He opened the lid and Only You poured out like a cancerous oil. The Deputy tried to fight back against it but couldn't, her ears couldn't bear the sound of it.
She was standing alone in the middle of a room. Her gun hung by her side, blood dripping down it's barrel. She had done it, she'd completed the trial. Her body screamed at her the whole time, begging her to stop, but she didn't listen.
"Very good, Deputy. You've done-" Jacob's voice was cut off by the Deputy crumbling to the ground. Her body did the giving up for her, she didn't even have to do anything. Her legs gave out, and her body didn't have the strength to do a damn thing about it.
A door opened and Jacob walked in. "Deputy?" He knelt over to her body, pressing two fingers into her neck to check for a pulse. It was there but it was faint. Jacob shouted for a medic and stepped back.
A medic scrambled in with a medikit and started dressing her wounds, stabbing her leg with some sort of pain reliever. The medic was too scared to ask why Jacob would be trying to save this one after so many others had died, honestly questioning Jacob's judgement was probably a death sentence. So he just did his job and ordered a couple of Peggies to carry her out of the room.

—
Sharky steals a boat. It just happens to be John’s boat, and when it’s damaged along with his boathouse, John proceeds to lay out a means of having Sharky pay him back. [No Cult AU]
———–
The first time Sharky worked up the nerve to kiss someone, he figured his luck was golden. Kristi, middle school, cool even with the braces, he’d impressed her with a few spare action figures and some of the extra snacks from his lunch. Talked her ear off more than once, and even had her respond with more than a nod, and an ‘uh huh’ or ‘okay’ to it too.
He had the moment planned out from the start, working up his nerve to pull it off only to get half a sandwich tossed at him mid-go. That, and some applesauce, and having to sit through the rest of the day with stained and sticky clothes had been the cherry on top of the shit sundae he’d made.
He’d thought the situation had been read right. Thought she’d been into him even if he was just a dumbass kid in bad need of a word (or five) breaking down why assuming that was bad – makes you less of an ass that way – and tried not to feel too broken up about it at the time. He could always pick himself back up and try again later.
Now, was no exception. He thought he had the situation down. Had everything sorted right from the start even if he didn’t have all of the pieces set in place yet, only for it all to snarl into a giant knot.
Because of course he’d want to see just what it’d take to get another smile from John, no matter how much he kept his mouth running to do so. To have John seek him out to talk, not just because he was there, but because he wanted to. To share more about himself, what he liked, what he loved. What mattered.
He wanted those things; liked earning them, knowing he’d been the one to make him smile like that. Laugh like that. Wanted to tap into the warm feeling he’d finally linked to it, flowing through him again and again.
So maybe it shouldn’t have been a shock when the other urge hit, saying to kiss the hell out of him. To do it as many times as John would let him, just to hear him react to it. To hold him close, and feel it too.
To earn that. To know he had.
That was an idea he could be okay with. He might’ve even let himself think he’d earned it that day, long enough to see what it tasted like.
And yeah, he did like it. He liked it a whole hell of a lot. Liked it, and John, and was full-on content to keep on kissing him even with the twig under him jabbing him in the ass.
But it wasn’t his call to make. Not alone, and when John pulled back he’d known on some level he’d fucked up.
Enough to know a sad 2 AM text wasn’t going to cut it, but he sent it. Still tried calling at least once as well, even if stammering out an apology wasn’t much better, but he got nothing. No response, no real acknowledgment, just radio silence.
Maybe he’d earned that too.
That, and the news that Joseph slapped him with when he'd finally kicked himself in the ass hard enough to head over and fess up directly. John wasn’t even there for one, and wouldn’t be for the next two weeks.
Two weeks.
Most of his work was usually done at his ranch or around the county, but they’d needed him to fly out for once; all for a few meetings that couldn’t be handled otherwise.
Joe wasn’t rude about it. He even welcomed him warmly once Sharky got through the whole shuffling and awkward rambling on the doorstep bit, half-launching into a speech that he was able to cut off before it got too personal too fast. But Joseph still had to tell him the news at least two more times for it to finally sink in, and the reassuring tone he used didn’t help one bit.
Because he knew what it was like to be avoided, to know that his piss-poor attempts at apologies really had to have fallen flat for John to cut out without any notice like that. And maybe he’d had a delay in replacing his phone – another thing of his he’d managed to wreck – but there were other ways he could’ve reached out to him.
With nothing to go off of, guessing was all he had left. So, with his thoughts pinging back and forth with a vengeance, he did the only thing he could do at the moment.
Work.
Pitching the schedule completely, he came by when he wanted, aware that the days were passing, but tried not to consciously tick them down while doing so. He worked his ass off, and turned the whole thing into the riverside discotheque he'd wanted since this whole mess had started. Had his top one-hundred greatest hits of all time on hand, wore his best headphones, and blared enough music into his eardrums to ensure nothing else could get through.
That’s how he started off this particular day, at least. Singing along loudly, throwing more paint up in lines that would’ve had John complaining next to him and pointing out what to do as he ‘helped’, and the pang he felt from it wasn’t funny at all.
Because it meant he missed that shit too, and that? That was bad.
“This fucking sucks,” he muttered, and brought the roller down only to squeeze his eyes shut before the splatter hit. “Fucking sucks.”
Lowering his headphones, Sharky grabbed for the rag hanging out of his back pocket, and tried to wipe the paint off of his face. It was during this that he caught movement in the distance. Coming down the path, the sunlight shone off of the spotless paint of the car, not a single scratch or dent on it in sight, and his heart jumped straight into his throat.
Scrubbing at the paint on him harder, he stashed the rag and wasn’t sure what the hell he was going for as he shuffled in place, but settled for staring thoughtfully at the wall in front of him. Wiped his hands on his shirt as he heard the door to the car open and close, and had no idea what the first word out of his mouth was going to be.
As it turns out, he didn’t say a thing. Just looked over at John as he walked up, dressed like a damn model himself, suit on with nowhere to go, and felt his face go a full three shades darker in color.
“Hmm.” John studied the building carefully, and tapped a finger on his chin. “You’ve been busy.”
“Uh, yeah.” That came out a little breathier than he would’ve liked, so Sharky cleared his throat and tried again. “Yeah, dude. You’ve been gone for what, two weeks now? What did you think I was gonna do during that? Take a holiday?”
“Maybe,” John replied. “I’d have considered it. No responsibilities, no oversight. Not a care in the world.”
He hadn’t looked his way yet, focusing on the boathouse instead. Sharky folded his arms just to keep his hands still, and rocked back and forth on his feet, all while the music kept on playing by his ear. He also tried not to read too much into the whole ‘lack of oversight’ part, but failed.
John did turn after a few more minutes, his examination finally over, and walked up to him. His face neutral, everything perfectly in place, and Sharky couldn’t help but stare at him.
“That settles it then,” John said.
“Settles what?”
“You’re done,” he replied coolly. “With the work you’ve put in, and the progress you’ve made, I believe your debt to me has been repaid.”
Everything screeched to a halt. His thoughts, the tapping he’d settled into, and his breath as he held it. “I don’t…you wanna say that again, amigo?”
John didn’t even bat an eye, “You’re free to go. Your help is no longer needed.”
That wasn’t right. The roof still needed work done, the paint was barely starting to dry, and he knew for a fact that this wasn’t finished. He’d stared at all of this with him long enough to know he had maybe a week and a half left, max.
But fine. Maybe he wanted him in another area. To switch to another project, and he latched right onto it.
“Well, you got anything else that you need help with? Think I told Joe I was going to-”
“No. I can manage it from here.”
That idea hadn’t even lasted a minute before John shot it dead.
And there it was, the feeling he'd braced for. The hurt that dug right into his chest, sinking in deep, and he let out a shaky breath as he worked around it.
“Guess I’ll just…” Sharky gestured behind him, attention locked on John as his throat grew tight. “Just start grabbing and loading this up then. Just grab all of this and be on my way.”
Nodding to himself as John stared back, unblinking, his shoulders sagged. Everything else sinking right with him, as a weight settled heavy in his gut.
He knew he wasn’t always going to be around here, but being cut loose like this hadn’t been a possibility he’d considered. Having John all but throw him out mid-job, due to screwing up along the line? Sure. Hell, he would’ve added time due to piss-poor performance, and all that talk of standards months back.
But having him pull this now? After working together so well, for so long?
It stunned him bad enough to keep him from arguing it. He dragged his feet as he gathered up his things, loading them all into the trunk of his car one by one as his disappointment started to hang over him like a cloud.
Sharky shut the trunk and gave John a tentative glance. He didn’t know if he should’ve been looking his way at all, but did it in the hopes he’d get something out of him.
But John wasn’t fazed. Didn’t react, or say anything as he watched him go about his business, somehow even colder than when they’d first started working together. Not angry, annoyed, happy, or anything.
Just nothing. Nothing at all.
Rounding the car, Sharky tugged down on the brim of his hat and hoped it’d stay there. “Guess I’ll see you around?”
“Perhaps. Provided you don’t torch another portion of my property.”
He stopped. Felt the comment dig in a little more than it should’ve, and turned to look at John. Saw the hint of a smirk that lingered there only for it to drop completely.
It hadn’t been a kind thing for John to say, but that John realized it only after looking right at him hurt even more.
Sharky couldn’t hold his tongue any longer at that.
“You know, people talk around here. Have been for years, and will keep on doing that come tomorrow, next week, next year, whenever. I know you’ve heard more than half of what goes on about you here. What they say, and just how they feel about you. Hell, I’ve talked shit plenty about you. Had no real reason to think you weren’t the county’s largest asshole based on the like, ten things we’ve said to each other before the last couple of months. But in some ways you’re an okay guy. Maybe even a great one once you get past the bullshit, and I, uh, like you.”
I like you.
He said it, actually got the words out of his mouth, and didn’t know how he could feel lighter and heavier all at once.
“Yeah, I like you. Didn’t think I’d ever say that and mean it. Probably tell the person claiming it they had a screw loose or something, but I do. And I liked being here. Working with you, being around you, and I don’t…”
Sharky bit the last part of the sentence off, because he knew what he did. He knew exactly what he’d done, and hated that this was the result.
“I, uh, don’t think it really matters what I say at this point, huh?” he muttered, looking John’s way. “Not anymore, at least.”
John’s jaw had tensed sometime in the last minute or so, but he held his tongue. Said nothing, and Sharky had let himself ramble on in spite of it. Had done anything to cover up whatever else he’d try.
Since this really was it, wasn’t it? The last time he was going to be here, talking to him, and he was wasting his time talking about anything other than the way he’d made him feel that day.
He’d never had the best of luck with shit like this anyway.
Giving John a grin, one that he wanted to muster up and mean, he held out his hand to him. “Guess this is where we part ways, amigo, and uh, don’t worry. Don’t think I’ll be taking a joyride in your boat twice.”
Not dropping his stare for a second, John shifted towards him and took his hand. Squeezed it as he shook it, and Sharky felt his grin finally wane as he forced himself to let go.
With one last slap to John’s shoulder, he headed towards his car.
“Charlemagne,” John called after him, but he didn’t slow down. “Charle-Sharky, wait.”
“Just save it, okay?” he snapped, pouring all of his frustration into it. “Don’t bother with the names, the pleading, or whatever this is you’re trying! Persuading me? Now? The fuck’s up with that? Not like you wanted me here to begin with, but it is what it is. I wrecked your shit, I came here to fix it, thinking that was going to be all of it, but this?”
He gestured between them, and let too much show on his face while saying it.
“This on top of everything else? Fucking blows, man. It fucking blows.”
Seeing John’s calm crack wasn’t satisfying. Having to force it to begin with, even less so.
“So just…let it go, huh? Save us both more trouble in the long run.”
Sharky turned, his feet carrying him to his car, and after slamming the door shut behind him, left.
On autopilot, he gunned the engine, not thinking about where the road was winding to. Just away. Far, far, away as he passed each of the signs dotting the valley. Following the road, he revved more than the car liked, content to keep listening to the roar of the motor until it shuddered. Something kicked around outside, pulling his attention straight to it, and he pulled in to a nearby gas station as he caught the familiar smell of burnt rubber.
He idled by the pump. Listened to the engine as he loosened his grip on the steering wheel, and turned the keys to shut it all off. Only then did the silence really hit; leaving him alone with only his heavy, uneven breathing to listen to.
That’s when the blue caught his eye.
Right on the dash sat the sunglasses. Blue, almost as blue as his eyes.
Punching the steering wheel, Sharky swallowed the rest of his feelings down and got out.

Part Eight /// Part Ten
October 5
Unlike her siblings, Bingo did not require sleep.
The young clown blinked for a moment before turning to the side, sensing as more party guests were making their way out of the large ballroom. Purple eyes landed on a pair of twins who made their way through the guests.
Bingo always sensed something about these two girls. She knew there was something about them, but not even her greatest of powers allowed her to see what.
This was one of the reasons why Bingo’s eyes stared into the darkness outside the car she and her family sat in, watching blankly as something was felt in the air.
“Bingo, duckling, why haven’t you gone to sleep?” came Ferry’s voice as she turned around to look at her triplets. Bingo was in between Ally and Carney, as always, and both of these were fast asleep due to so much activity at their babysitter’s birthday party.
“I am not tired.” Bingo replied after turning to her mother, blinking once.
“I know, but it’s still best you rest.” Ferry smiled at Bingo who gave a bit of a nod. “Especially if we’ll be going to the haunt attraction tomorrow.”
“Later.” Bingo corrected. “It is past midnight.”
“Yes, later.” Ferry chuckled with a nod of her own. “But please rest Bingo.”
“Yes mother.” Bingo replied, then placing her head back on the seat before shutting her eyes to Ferry’s satisfaction.
Once Ferry had turned away, however, Bingo turned her head to the side before opening her eyes once again. She felt somewhat surprised once she noticed that her purple eyes had been looking identical eyes that soon disappeared.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soft snores and breathing sounded through the room Bingo was in, her eyes still open as they stared up at the ceiling over her bed.
She never blinked but only thought to herself, running the images from before over and over again. But then, finally, Bingo felt herself blink as she heard a sound just outside the bedroom and house her family resided in.
The girl then blinked a few more times before placing her doll to the side so that she would not squish it as she made herself sit up in bed. Bingo’s eyes darted to each of the windows as she continued to hear noises outside, and that was when she realized that one of the windows had somehow...opened.
She had a tight grip on her doll as she watched the curtains flow with the soft wind she never knew had been there,and in the darkness she was able to make out a figure.
This figure stepped closer towards the window, then somehow coming into the room which made Bingo furrow her eyebrows at the intruder.
However…
Bingo saw as, in what she could tell was the silhouette’s features, that two orbs were now glowing in the darkness...and they were glowing a purple color identical to hers.
Bingo sensed something about this new shape...and she could tell just what this time.
“Hi Sharky.~”
“Hey there Jelly-Bean.”Lennie smiled to himself as he sat in his brother’s living room, having just received a phone call that made a lovestruck smile come onto his features.
“How are you Lennie?” his beloved’s voice sounded on the other line.
“I’m fine, but better now that you called. I’m here at Billy and Maggie’s.” Lennie chuckled to himself, then looking to the side where Billy sat, the latter rolling his eyes in a playful manner. “How are you doing?”
“I’m still tired. I had to stay up all night, uh, yesterday. Because, it’s night right now.” Jelly slightly giggled. “How have the kids been doing?”
“Ula went with her band to practice, surprisingly not tired.”
“Well, guess she’s excited about being older.”
“Yeah, I guess so. And I trusted Davey and Cordie to stay at home since they were also a bit tired after such a party.” Lennie explained as he and Billy looked to the side, seeing Harper be followed by the triplets. “Of course, they have all the axolotls with them. I have a feeling Schrader might go over later.”
“Schrader? Oh, Lennie...you didn’t hear?”
“Hear what? Did something happen to Schrader?” Lennie now sat up, no longer leaning back on the couch, which Billy took notice of.
“Ula didn’t want to tell you but...he left, after the party.”
“Left?”
“Yeah...he told her that...he didn’t want to be here anymore.” Jelly quietly told Lennie who blinked to himself a few times. “He only stayed for the party and...he left.”
“Wait, he really left? Like, really, really left? Like when he br-”
“Yes, just like the first time.” Jelly interrupted Lennie who turned to look at his brother, Billy quirking an eyebrow as if asking what was going on. “Ula didn’t want to go too much into detail about it but...she called me when I got out of a meeting.”
“That...that’s so unfortunate.” Lennie whispered, still not believing what he was hearing. “I’ll make sure to talk to Ula later. She seemed okay.”
“I guess she’s just trying to not react like last time, and still prove to Atlas…”
“Yeah…”
“Well, Lennie,” Jelly gave a bit of a yawn. “I don’t want to be giving anymore bad news and I wouldn’t want to waste your time with Billy.”
“It’s alright Jelly-Bean, I don’t think he minds.”
“I know, but I also need some nap time Sharky. I have another meeting in the morning and I want to go buy some souvenirs for all of you once I’m done.”
“Sounds good.”
“I’ll try to call you when I wake up, okay?”
“Okay.” Lennie nodded to himself before he and Jelly exchanged a few more words, then ending the call as the brothers looked at each other.
“What’s wrong?” Billy questioned before Lennie gave a sigh.
“Schrader left.”
“He left?”
“Yeah.”
“Are you sure?” Billy blinked a few times before tapping his chin. “That seems rather odd...he didn’t even say anything?”
“No, he only talked to Ula apparently. She didn’t tell me anything about it; she looked perfectly fine and happy.”
“Did something happen to Ula?” another voice asked, prompting the men to turn and see Amaranthus who had just walked into the room. “Dad? Uncle?”
“Ula is alright, princess.” Billy answered before glancing at his brother who gave a bit of a nod. “It’s just, your friend Schrader.”
“Is he alright?”
“He left, Ama.” Lennie told his niece as he watched her face contort into a confused one. “He left last night after the party.”
“That can’t be true.” Ama shook her head. “That can’t be...why would he leave?”
“We don’t know, we were just told by your aunt Jelly.”
“Ula’s the last person he talked to, so she’s bound to know.”
“If he didn’t keep it a secret…”Ama whispered to herself before turning back to Billy and Lennie. “I’m gonna go look for Ula.”
_____________
Right on the other line, where Jelly had been talking to Lennie, was instead his daughter who had just popped a bubble gum she had blown right after ending the call with Lennie.
Through heart shaped shades, Ula looked through the phone belonging to Jelly which had been acquired thanks to James. So many pictures of the little man, very many others of the kids, others of sea creatures.
“She’s obsessed.” Ula rolled her eyes before turning the phone off, throwing it behind her as it landed in the back seats of the car she currently sat in. “Now, let’s see-”
Ula was then slightly startled at the sound of her phone ringing, and she answered it after having seen the name on the screen.
“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.” she blinked a few times reading the name ‘Bambi’ as it was accompanied by a deer and heart emojis; this making her alter her voice to her normal, Ula one. “Hello?~”
“Hey Shortcake.”
“Hi Atlas.” she replied while picking at her nails, hearing Atlas clear his throat. “You still with your grandparents?”
“Uh, no. I left earlier, they said thanks for the cake. Gonna give my compliments to Pepper later.”
“That’s great! I’m glad.” Ula reached over to the other seat where she grabbed a gift ‘she’ got at the party. “And hey, Atlas?”
“Yeah?”
“I wanted to thank you again for the gift. It really means a lot to me.”
“Oh, it’s...no big deal.” Ula heard Atlas slightly chuckled on the other line. “But, that’s good to know. I’m really glad you like it.”
“Yeah…” Ula rolled her eyes before tossing the book to the side where it landed on the grass. “Anyways, any reason for calling?”
“I just wanted to talk to you is all, especially after yesterday. Sorry for leaving early.”
“It’s no problem Atlas. You know, you can easily make it up to me.~”
“How so?”
“How about,” Ula grabbed rear view window of the car, tilting it so that she could look at her reflection that showed no Ula, but a mime with glowing, pink eyes. “We meet up at my mom’s pier and have a little date?~”
_____________
“So tell me, how does it feel to be a father?”
Silence.
“Especially after your widow ate the one she birthed, hm?
Once again, there was a silence that made the man speaking frown with a growl.
“Say something, you coward!”
“How...” the other voice finally replied, this one only heard by the man who finally smiled to himself, and rather malevolently. “How does it feel to have your arse kicked by the woman you tormented for so long?”
At these words, the man’s frown returned before he lifted a hand and conjured up a dagger than he then stabbed into himself. He gave no reaction, but the voice inside him reacted with a scream of pain before the dagger was rapidly pulled out.
“You remember this, don’t you Jamie? You remember those times you wanted to be a little bitch and go against me?”
He was met with yet another silent moment that made him roll his eyes with a deep sigh.
“Oh Jamie, James, James. You always were such a bore, no wonder you and Jelly were fucked.” Ryder shook his head as he looked through the papers on the desk in front of him, one popping up that he had made sure to get. “Oh how wonderful her expression of horror was when she realized I had returned for her. It was nice to feel that way again. I wonder if I can do that to your daughter next, she has grown up to look rather fine.~”
“She is not my daughter.” James immediately replied. “And you will not go anywhere near Ula.”
“Ah, so now you don’t want to be daddy dearest, hm?”
“It is not that.” James whispered. “It...you should have never forced her to have my blood.”
“I never forced her to do anything. That was my kid.” Ryder shrugged as he admired the picture of Jelly that he held in his hands, even licking his lips at the sight. “It’s just a shame that Jelly wasn’t the one who made her, but rather that bitch Missy.”
“What did you just call me?”
Ryder’s eyes widened as he panicked and fell off his chair, scurrying to hide behind the desk and he peaked over it to hear a laugh he could only recognize as Missy’s. However, the laugh turned into a cackle that then sounded awful.
“I can not believe you are still the spider’s bitch!” the cackling continued as Ryder now realized that Missy was nowhere near, but only a smog that had a plethora of eyes appear with a large grin. “I do find it quite disappointing however. One of my own at the feet of one of Decla’s. Pitiful.”
“Risus, I…” Ryder then cleared his throat as he stood up and fixed his coat. “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“Really now?” Risus now manifested in front of Ryder who stared up at the figure. “And what were you expecting?”
“I was going to go with the D’Vitts, see how I could-”
“You are not needed, I already have my handy-dandy little helper stirring up some chaos for me.” Risus admired their claws as one of them swirled a fog in the air that transformed into a picture of Ula doing her own things. “She has been a good one, this one. I am rather proud to call her a descendant of mine, as should you.”
“I-”
“How is Mendax doing in there?” Risus then poked Ryder’s chest.
“He has been pitiful and miserable as always.” Ryder answered.
“And you?”
“I was going with the D’Vitts, as I mentioned. Or at least, pay Jelly a visit.” Ryder informed Risus who then turned to him in curiosity.
“That stunt you pulled on her those many years ago.” Risus smiled as their eyes all blinked at once. “How about you stir something like that again? Make me proud again, but do not disappoint me like the last time.”
“Of course. Last time I was so close but,” Ryder then gave a deep frown as he clenched his fists. “Cosmos had to come in and-”
“Give you a beating, I know.” Risus rolled all of their eyes before they created a new picture, this one showing Cosmos beating Ryder until the shadow creature sped away. “A huge embarrassment that was, especially because it was a D’Vitt.”
“I know.”
“Ryder.” Risus called out to their descendant who turned to look back at them. “Make sure that before anything, you get rid of the annoying little pest she calls her mate.”
_____________
There was a certain vibe in the atmosphere, and Zeta did not like it one bit.
The woman had been going on with her day as usual, even as Calliope and the twins had gone out to visit some friends. Zeta had of course stayed behind to assist the ringleader and the circus’ needs but...much earlier, before it could even be dawn...she felt something.
It was barely after midnight when she felt something in her chest, a pain.
Even now as Zeta sat in front of a table, watching potential performers before her eyes and the ones belonging to the kids sitting on either side of her, she felt the pain. She tapped the pointer finger that lay on her left arm for she had them crossed as usual, eyes staring at the deadlights who performed one at a time, but this was not enough to make her forget about the pain in her chest.
“The one in polka dots is lousy.”
Zeta blinked once before glancing to the side where she saw a head of curly hair adorned with a crown.
“Right Zeta?”
“Why do you believe so?” Zeta replied to the child she often kept an eye on, this one being named Colette.
“Keeps trying to show off acrobatics but can’t even do a proper cartwheel.”
“A-At least he’s t-t-trying…” came another voice on Zeta’s right side, this one being Colette’s older brother Rudy.
“Trying’s not going to impress people for tomorrow’s show, Rudy.” the sister scoffed as she crossed her arms.
“We will take him.” Zeta interrupted the two who looked up at her in surprise, Colette frowning deeply as her brother gave a small smile, finally feeling accomplished. “Next one.”
As another clown walked onto the center spot to show their skills, Zeta’s ears caught the sound of wings flapping in desperation and panic until they ceased as something had landed onto her shoulder.
“Is t-that a crow?” Rudy blinked as he watched a crow perched on the woman’s shoulder.
“Yes, it is.” Zeta turned to the bird who nuzzled its head into her cheek, Zeta returning the gesture with a stroke to the head with her finger. “What is it?”
Rudy and Colette watched as the crow cooed into Zeta’s ear, both shocked at the sight while Zeta nodded as the crow continued. It was even more shocking when they saw Zeta’s eyes widen, this being something that had never happened before, but soon her signature expression had returned.
“Rudy.”
“Y-Yes, Zeta?”
“Where is the ringleader?”
“The r-ringleader?” Rudy stammered out before turning to the side. “M, I-I think I saw t-t-them with a woman l-last…”
“What woman?”
“I-I have no i-idea who she is, but she w-w-went to them a-a-and-”
“You two stay here.” Zeta immediately stood up before she made her way out, leaving the siblings puzzled as they stared at each other with shrugs. “Where is he?”
The crow that Zeta had still been talking to then gave another coo, Zeta furrowing her eyebrows even more.
“I thought you said you had followed them.” Zeta whispered to the crow who replied once again. “I am glad you escaped them. I should have listened to those kids...”
With a caw at Zeta, the crow lifted its wings before settling down as Zeta now entered the ringleader’s tent to stop in the opening as she heard a conversation. This made her squint her eyes before slowly walking in as the crow on her remained quiet and watchful. They each looked in the same direction before looking back to the front again which lead them to the ringleader’s ‘bedroom’, the conversation now much clearer.
“And what of the previous gentleman?”
“Oh, that ended so long ago.”
“Why so? If you do not mind my asking.”
“He was still in love with his ex-girlfriend.” a woman’s voice spoke, then pausing for a moment as Zeta opened the next opening where she saw the ringleader and...a clown, the latter turning to look at Zeta before taking a sip from a wine glass. “But he’s history now, as is the ex.”
“Ringleader.” Zeta called out before her eyes darted over to Cuckoo who turned, barely noticing her before a smile crawled onto their expression.
“Zeta! I almost did not see you there.” Cuckoo grinned, almost standing up but feeling as the other woman pulled them back onto the chair they were on.
“Who is this?” Zeta questioned as she eyed the clown, already knowing very well who she was.
“Why, this is Evie! She was a performer years earlier but has finally returned.” Cuckoo glanced over at Evie who fluttered her eyelashes. “Isn’t she a lovely one?”
“Lovely.” Zeta only repeated the word, eyeing the crow on her shoulder. “Ringleader, would you not consider Miss Calliope lovely?”
“Calliope?” Cuckoo blinked at Zeta who nodded.
“Your spouse.”
“Spouse?” Evie answered for Cuckoo who turned to her, the clown stroking Cuckoo’s cheek which made them melt right into her hand. “Cuckoo doesn’t have a spouse, and they especially don’t have any children. Right Cuckoo?”
“Whatever you say.” Cuckoo nodded before nuzzling their face into Evie’s hand.
“Ringleader.” Zeta said in a stern tone that made the pair look over at her, Zeta glaring right into Evie’s purple eyes. “You must attend the auditions that are being held today. The performers have been waiting to meet you.”
“Oh dear, I forgot about such a thing.” Cuckoo shook their head in disappointment at themselves, then standing up with the intention of making their way towards Zeta.
“Cuckoo.” Evie now called out to them, the ringleader turning as she grabbed their wrist in a tight and desperate grip. “Cuckoo, don’t leave me.”
“I would never.” Cuckoo claimed a Evie stood up her hand now in Cuckoo’s before they place a kiss onto it. “My dear, I must attend these auditions.”
“No you don’t.” Evie fluttered her eyes again, this making Cuckoo blink and shake their head before giving her a soft smile.
“You are right, I do not have to go to such a silly thing.” Cuckoo chuckled, never noticing Zeta’s deadly glare directed towards Evie who gave her a sly smile. “In fact, I would much rather remain in your presence.”
“I’m so glad.” Evie grinned at Cuckoo before placing their hand on her cheek. “I think we should go out and have a nice, romantic, dinner, yes?”
“I believe-” Cuckoo was then interrupted by another flutter of Evie’s eyes. “-a romantic, dinner sounds wonderful. Any ideas, my love?”
“Anywhere would be nice.” Evie then embraced Cuckoo who returned the gesture, once again not taking notice of the looks the two women gave each other. “As long as I’m far away from this woman.”
“This woman?” Cuckoo turned to Zeta who softened her gaze, though she looked as intimidating as ever. “Has she harmed you?”
“She doesn’t approve of us.” Evie whispered as she hid in Cuckoo’s chest, feigning an innocent attitude. “I never understood why she didn’t like me.”
“Zeta, that is rather rude.” Cuckoo gave Zeta a small frown.
“Rude or not, this woman does not belong here.”
“Zeta, I am disappointed.” Cuckoo remarked while Evie smirked at Zeta. “In fact-”
“I will leave then.” Zeta stated before she heard the crow give a caw of surprise, Evie also looking in a bit of shock. “You may remain with this woman if you wish, I do not control your life.”
“She’s right Cuckoo.” Evie made Cuckoo look down at her shorter figure. “It’s best that she leaves, right?”
“Yes, yes it is best she leave.” Cuckoo nodded as they and Evie watched Zeta backwards. The pair followed her to make sure that she got out of the tent itself, seeing as she stood outside.
“I will leave.” Zeta stated again, then bringing her hands up before a sort of shield was conjured up from them, covering the entire premises belonging to the circus. “But you are not leaving these grounds.”
“What the hell!?” Evie yelled at Zeta who walked away, ignoring the clown’s rants from behind. “You get back here you bitch!”
“Ignore her.” Zeta told the crow who then cawed in concern, watching as Zeta walked through the clear shield she had created. “She nor the ringleader have passage out, and teleportation is not an option either.”
The crow once again replied, then feeling Zeta’s finger on its claws. So the bird climbed onto it, remaining perched as Zeta brought it to her own face.
“We will leave the pair alone for now, despite my concerns.” Zeta spoke to the crow who tilted its head. “There are other matters we must attend to, or at least that I must. Grant me this favor and attempt to reach and bring out the ringleader’s family, perhaps they can do something whilst I find the boy.”
With one last caw, the crow flew away from Zeta and through the sky, leaving the woman walking by herself as she decided on her first stop.
“So tell me, how are your grandparents?”
Atlas gave a small shrug as he looked at the girl sitting across from him, both with small smiles as she took a sip of her drink.
“I’d say they’re doing fine. Grandfather is doing his usual things and Grandmother worrying.” Atlas chuckled to himself, not really knowing how to answer the question at the moment. “But uh, hey, how was the party?
“It was really fun, you missed out.” Ula grinned before grabbing the fork that was beside her arm, for the pair had agreed on meeting up at a restaurant on the pier owned by Jelly. “There was so much dancing, me and Schrader got into the swing of it. As in, we still got our dance moves.”
“Yeah, I was told you guys like dancing a lot, together.” Atlas nodded before grabbing his drink and sipping from it. “Glad you had fun.”
“Yeah, even after that whole blood bucket fiasco thing.” Ula waved the hand that was not holding the fork, but the one that did harshly stabbed right into the fish on her plate, slightly starling Atlas. “I’m glad it didn’t turn out like the movie, with the whole Tommy getting hit on the head thing.”
“Oh, right. Ula, I didn’t tell you.” Atlas leaned a little towards Ula as his voice became quiet. “You need to be on the lookout, or at least Schrader does.”
“Why?”
“I wasn’t able to see who did it, but I saw the person purposely let go of the bucket and I’m guessing it was to hit Schrader on the head.” Atlas whispered, his eyes then glancing down to Ula’s plate as the fork was sunk deep enough to break the plate in half. “I thankfully got there on time to catch the bucket…”
“Did you now?” Ula blinked a few times as she twisted her fork. “You saved Schrader?”
“Um, well...I wouldn’t put it that way…” Atlas gave a shrug as he glanced to the side, not noticing Ula’s eye twitch even as he turned back to only see her smile at him.
“I thought, you didn’t exactly...like, Schrader?”
“It’s not that I don’t like him, it’s just...a little awkward still. I appreciate him standing up for me and all, but...yeah.”
“That’s...nice.” Ula nodded to herself before her eyes trailed down to the stabbed fish on her plate, though she moved it to the side to instead focus on the strawberries surrounding it, then popping one into her mouth. “It’s a shame though.”
“What is?”
“That all that...work, didn’t exactly pay off.” Ula mumbled to Atlas who shook his head in confusion.
“What do you mean?”
“Schrader left. Again.”
“L...left?” Atlas’ eyes widened at Ula’s words. “What did everybody else say?”
“Nothing, because he only told me and left.” Ula popped another strawberry into her mouth. “And just like the last time, he gave no explanation. Didn’t even bother explaining the reason for the first leave.”
“But…” Atlas looked down at his own plate. “That’s...it’s...you aren’t sad about it?”
“He’s not my boyfriend, Atlas.” Ula stated with a stoical expression. “I’m done with crying over Schrader, I only saw him as a friend. I thought that would be enough to satisfy you, but I see not.”
“Wait, wait, that’s not what I meant-”
“Of course it isn’t.” Ula sighed before rolling her eyes to the side where she was looking out the window presenting a lovely view of the beach. “Here I am trying to prove that you’re the only one I want, and you’re concerned that I’m not mourning over Schrader like he died.”
“Ula, come on.” Atlas reached out to grab Ula’s hand that she pulled away. “Ula-”
“You know, I think it’s time we leave.” Ula set her fork down to then stand up from her seat, Atlas following suit as she talked to a nearby waiter. “Put it on my tab.”
“Ula.” Atlas followed behind Ula who made her way through the restaurant until finally walking out. “Ula, listen to me.”
“What?” Ula finally turned around as Atlas stood before her, the deer clown gave a tiny shrug.
“Ula, I don’t want you upset. I’m sorry if I gave the wrong message, it wasn’t on purpose. I just...I’m confused is all.”
“Because of Schrader?” Ula questioned, Atlas giving a nod. “I kind of thought you’d be relieved he was gone...I thought you felt he was only complicating our relationship, so I just tried to stop caring when he told me he would be leaving. And trust me, he left soon after.’
“I see.” Atlas nodded before silently sighing, then peering to the side where he saw a beautiful plethora of pastel colors that brought a small smile to his face. “Hey...how about, we just forget about this, maybe talk about it when you’re up for it, and we ride your carousel?”
Ula looked to where Atlas now pointed to, and she saw the carousel Jelly purchased for the fourth of October. She stared at it for a while, shaking her head as she spoke.
“I’m not a kid anymore, Atlas.” Ula chuckled to herself as Atlas felt his eyes widen in surprise yet again. “I have a better idea though.”
_____________
After a while of driving around in what Atlas now knew was Schrader’s gift to Ula, this also coming to be a surprise after the latest news he heard from Ula, he watched as the teal vehicle was driven into a forest.
“So, where exactly are we going?” Atlas turned to Ula as she kept her eyes on the road, a smile coming onto her features however.
“A special place.” she replied, still driving down a path while Atlas scanned the surrounding area. “I think you’ll like it.”
“Anybody know about it?”
“Only one other person knew about it.” Ula shrugged. I have plenty of hidden spots though, so it doesn’t matter. Not like he’s going to come back to it.”
“Right…” Atlas turned to the front, especially as he felt the car come to a stop. “Is this it?”
“Yeah, come on.” Ula opened her door before getting out of the car as Atlas followed and walked behind her. “It’s in here. But don’t go in yet, I gotta get a picnic cloth first.”
Atlas waited for Ula to do as she said she would, finally coming back from the trunk to then lead Atlas into what looked like a wall of vines and flowers. The pair walked right through before Atlas squint his eyes upon the reveal of a new sunlight, and he blinked until he could see the sight in the distance. He could see that they were on a cliff that was above a large body of water, and the cliff was adorned with plantlife blooming and gently swaying with the soft breeze that passed by the pair.
“This...looks really nice, Ula.” Atlas commented as he admired the beauty of it all, Ula nodding in agreement as she herself felt a sense of amazement as well.
Ula then snapped out of it, walking towards the center of the cliff to set down the checkered cloth she now sat on top of. She looked behind her and her eyes landed on Atlas, the view making her giggle a bit before patting the spot beside her.
“If you leave you mouth open, flies are gonna go right into it.” she smiled at Atlas who gave a small laugh of embarrassment. “I mean, it’s nothing compared to the wonders you’ve shown me, but yeah.”
“It’s still beautiful.” Atlas smiled back at Ula as he seated himself beside her on top of the large cloth, his face near hers as Ula leaned in until their foreheads touched.
“Atlas?” Ula blinked her green eyes before Atlas nodded in response. “I’m really sorry I’ve been acting so...weird, lately. I feel that too many things are going on and I’ve just dragged you into them with me.”
“It’s...it’s okay.” Atlas shrugged before feeling as Ula gently pecked the tip of his nose. “You’re my girlfriend, and my best friend before that.”
“I think it’s just the hormones or something that has been acting up.” Ula claimed as she shut her eyes with a laugh. “I don’t understand all this growing up stuff.”
“Hormones?” Atlas quirked an eyebrow while Ula laughed to herself.
“I don’t know!” she then rubbed her nose against Atlas’, then repeating the action with their cheeks as she moved closer towards him with her hands now on his shoulders. “I’ve just been feeling weird and don’t know how to explain it...especially right now.”
“R-Right now?” Atlas cleared his throat as he watched Ula sit on his lap. “Ula?”
“Atlas, you know how much I love you, right?” Ula fluttered her eyelashes at him.
“Um, y-yeah.” Atlas nodded, now feeling as Ula straddled him while leaning close to his face. “What…”
Ula then interrupted Atlas by placing her lips on his, Atlas surprised before he melted into the kiss and equally returned the action. There wasn’t anything wrong of course but…
Atlas felt himself be slowly pushed backwards until his back was now against the ground, Ula on top as they continued to kiss. He shut his eyes and held her waist, noticing how Ula’s kissing had gotten a tad bit rougher while her hands traveled down from his shoulders and onto his chest.
“Ula?” Atlas pulled himself away with half lidded eyes, especially as Ula started to kiss his jawline. “Are...is this…?”
“Yeah.” Ula nodded as she continued kissing Atlas, her lips now on his neck as her hands tugged at the bottom of his shirt in an attempt to pull it up, and then one of her hands-
“Hey! Hey, um…” Atlas pulled himself away again as Ula blinked at him with wide eyes. “Ula, um…”
“Is something wrong?”
“No, I mean…” Atlas reached down to fix his shirt while looking away, especially with his flustered features. “Ula...this doesn’t feel right.”
“This…?”
“No, no, no. Not, this. It’s just...something’s not right and it’s really bothering me.” Atlas muttered out. “I swear, it’s not y-”
“It that your lameass excuse?”
“E...Excuse me?” Atlas now turned to Ula who frowned deeply, feeling as she removed herself from him to then stand up.
“You couldn’t even muster up some better reason?” Ula rolled her eyes with crossed arms. “What’s so wrong? It’s just me, isn’t it?”
“Ula, it’s not you.” Atlas stood up as well, reaching out to Ula who moved herself away. “Ula, I just don’t think right now is the time or place, and-”
“Oh I’m fucking sure that’s it.” Ula spat out at him. “You’re still not upset about Schrader, are you?”
“What?”
“It’s not my fault you decided to ditch out on me, your girlfriend, at my own birthday party!” Atlas shouted at Atlas who felt some confusion rise up. “Maybe if you had never left, I wouldn’t have been hanging out with Schrader. I don’t get why you’re getting so jealous over it if you just put this on yourself! It's just like when you left for your little adventures with your grandpa!”
“Whoa, I’m not jealous. I mean, I do feel bad about leaving early but-”
“Or maybe, that’s not even the case, huh? I’m betting you didn’t even go with your grandparents, would you perhaps have somebody else? Did you just happen to find some other bitch to get jealous over while we were on a break?”
“Of course not!” Atlas replied in pure shock and frustration. “Ula, I thought we would talk about these things, not keep them secret!”
“Yet here you are with your own secrets.” Ula rolled her eyes yet again. “For fuck’s sake Atlas, you’re such a pussy.”
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me, deer boy.” Ula shook her head before turning and walking away.
“Ula!” Atlas shouted after her, then following behind and leaving the secluded area as he saw her get into her car. “Ula!”
“Walk back and go cry to mommy.” Ula spoke before finishing with one last remark and driving off. “Schrader was such a better boyfriend.”
After seeing how things had been recently, Ama had the strong feeling that something was off.
She pondered to herself as she walked through town, having put her phone away after attempting to call her best friend Ula once again. It was strange that Ula hadn’t answered any of the calls, and it only worried Ama furthermore.She tried to think of it as Ula only having a sad moment to herself and nothing signaling that there was any danger, but either reason was concerning.
Ama sighed before running a hand through her hair, then stopping in her tracks once she stood in front of a building she had visited a few times, especially when she and her friends were younger.
The first D’Vitt toy shop.
She blinked at it once before pushing the front door open and walking inside, her eyes scanning the area until they eventually landed on a head of crimson locks.
“Hey there Bubbles.” Ama called out before green eyes met hers, and she was immediately able to sense a nervousness to them.
“Hey Ama.” Bubbles quietly replied before her eyes darted back down to the magazine she had been reading for a while.
“How’s work?” Ama slowly walked towards her friend who kept her gaze on the magazine lying open on the counter.
“Slow.” Bubbles gave a bit of a cough. “It’s been a slow day.”
“Huh, well lucky you.” Ama smiled as she now lay her arms on the counter in front of Bubbles. “You get a break from all that tiresome partying.”
“I guess.” Bubbles shrugged, her head down while she tried to not look at Ama. “Are you going to...buy something?”
“I think I just might.” Ama turned her head to the side, her eyes landing on the large wall that was surprisingly still filled with all kinds of toys marked with a rather popular name. “Princess Ula. The dolls are nice.”
Bubbles, despite her head being down, now glanced up at Ama who admired the merchandise that had Ula’s face all over it.
“I don’t get why somebody would be so rude and bitter towards Ula.” Ama now approached the wall of merchandise, taking down one of the boxes that came with a Princess Ula dol accompanied by a figure of Mana. “Do you, Bubbles?”
“I don’t know.” Bubbles gave another shrug before she cleared her throat, murmuring to herself as she hoped Ama wouldn’t hear her. “Probably because she loves to hog all the attention.”
“Ula doesn’t even like attention.” Ama posited before she turned to Bubbles who finally lifted her head to look at her back in surprise. “Bubbles.”
“What?”
“You’re being a brat.” Ama completely turned to face Bubbles’ who’s eyes widened. “Ula has never been rude to you.”
“But she has.” Bubbles retaliated before she saw Ama approach her.
“She has because she has to defend herself from your bratty comments!” Ama exclaimed with a bit of anger in her tone. “I never realized it until I heard you at her birthday party, but damn you say some things about her!”
“Can you blame me!?” Bubbles exclaimed back. “Everybody is always paying attention to Ula! Everything is about Ula! This whole store is Ula! The amusement park is Ula! Everything that comes out of everybody’s mouth is Ula, Ula, Ula!”
“I can blame you, actually.” Ama stated which made Bubbles blink in total shock. “You’re just being a brat Bubbles. You act like nobody cares about you when we all love you.”
“Stop it.”
“You’re my friend, you’re loved by all of us.”
“Stop treating me like I’m Schrader.” Bubbles crossed her arms and turned so that her back was facing Ama. “If you’re not buying anything, then just leave!”
“You say that everybody always talks about Ula, yet you never hear yourself and how many times you spew her name out.” Ama commented, prompting Bubbles to turn and face her again. “It’s not Ula’s fault you feel this way. Ula loves you, you’re her cousin and her friend. You guys are family.”
“I’m not family with somebody who steals the spotlight and makes everybody feel down.”
“Speak for yourself.” Ama gave a deep sigh as she shook her head. “This shit really needs to stop Bubbles. You really are loved by all of us and we’ll say it as many times as we need to for you to believe us.”
“Well you’ll just be wasting your time.” Bubbles huffed. “So be like Schrader and just leave.”
“Like Schrader?” Ama quirked an eyebrow, then seeing as Bubbles realized her mistake. “How did you know Schrader left?”
“W-what do you mean?” Bubbles nervously coughed. “I meant like, when he broke up with Ula and left to who knows where.”
“So, you had no idea that he left again?” Ama questioned as she leaned in close to Bubbles, the redhead darting her eyes away while she shook her head. “Because from what I was told, he left last night. Ula was the last person to see him.”
“I didn’t know.” Bubbles responded while avoiding Ama’s gaze. “Sucks that he left again. I w-wonder if he’ll c-c-c-come back. Like, last time.”
“Yeah, I wonder.” Ama nodded as she eyed Bubbles, not even having to second guess that she was currently tense and anxious. “Why are you so nervous?”
“N-Nervous?” Bubbles then gulped. “I’m not n-nervous. Just cold. I f-f-forgot my jacket.”
“Jacket?”
“Yeah, so if y-you’ll excuse me,” Bubbles then made her way out of the counter before walking backwards towards the back room. “I’m gonna go get it! A-and take a break! So you should leave, right now.”
And with that, Bubbles crashed into the wall which made her give an embarrassed laugh before she actually made her way into the backroom and closed the door.
Ama stood in the same spot, squinting her eyes in suspicion before she made her way out.
_____________
Pleased with herself, Ula hummed along to the music that was emitted from the radio in her car.
She drove through the streets until finally reaching the next of her destinations: home. Home sweet home. Ula smiled to herself as her house now came into view, then parking her car in front before turning it off and getting out.
“Whoa! You finally got it!” she heard, so she turned up and she saw that the front door was now wide open to reveal her sister.
“Is it Ula?” somebody else asked, this now being Davey who also stepped into the open doorway for his eyes to light up at the sight that was his older sister.
“Hey guys.” Ula greeted with a smile as she now leaned against the car. “You like my ride?~”
“Yeah!” Cordelia exclaimed before dashing out and towards the car. “I mean, we already saw it before your birthday, but it looks even better finished!”
“Schrader did a pretty good job.” Davey agreed as he too stood in front of the car, admiring its shiny features and nice teal color.
“Guess he did.” Ula nodded before walking away from the car and towards the house. “Come on, we should eat lunch.
“So you’re done with band practice?” Cordelia asked, now following behind her sister and Davey who had begun walking first.
“Yep. I’m free for the day.”
“Oooh! Maybe we should go out and eat!” Cordelia suggested once everybody was inside, but Ula shook her head.
“Nah, I already ate out with Atlas. But I’m willing to make something tasty for you guys.” Ula smiled at her siblings who walked into the kitchen with her, then sitting at the kitchen table as Ula looked through the fridge. “Anything in mind?”
“Whatever is fine.” Davey shrugged while he swung his legs in the air, Cordelia eagerly nodded in agreement.
“Hmm, alright. Let’s see what I can conjure up.” Ula nodded before closing the fridge as she held a large bowl of sliced melons and squid. “But give me a moment, gotta feed the axolotls first. You guys gave them their breakfast, right?”
“Yup!” Cordelia proudly grinned. “And we even cleaned up the mess made by the puppies!”
“Great. I’ll be right back then.” Ula gave her sister a thumbs up before making her way out of the kitchen and into the hallway where she then opened the door to the axolotls’ room. She was met with a slumbering family of axolotls before two of them lifted their heads, the parents of course.
Mana instantly perked up at the sight of his little one, tail wagging as he gave excited barks which awoke the younger axolotls who all lifted their heads before barking in unison.
However, Kala only gave a quiet growl as she herself stood up and glared at Ula.
“Hey there.” Ula watched as Mana pranced over to her, standing on his hind legs to lick Ula’s face, or at least as close as possible. “Hey!”
All of the axolotls, with the exception of Kala, now ran towards Ula who felt herself be overwhelmed in the moment.
“Hey! Get the fuck off me!” Ula shouted before the axolotls all stopped and stared at her in confusion, Mana then nuzzling his face against Ula’s leg until he felt as she kicked him away. “Get the fuck away from me!”
Mana then gave a whimper, especially with the new pain he felt, but he then turned as he heard a growl behind him.
“You’re all such annoying pests.” Ula spat out as she made her way through the axolotls, shoving them all away as they gave whines of their own and watched her walk. That was when a new barking was heard, this coming from Kala who stood her ground.
The young axolotls then stood and ran behind their mother who continued barking at Ula who rolled her eyes.
“Your little bitch ass has been at it since the morning, huh?” Ula asked before throwing the bowl to the side where Mana was cowering, managing to hit him which made him give a whine. “I fucking dare you to try and bite me again.”
Kala then got ready to pounce, but she did not do so because she knew that was just what the imposter wanted. But then, Kala watched as the girl raised a hand and a shadow like claw appeared, this one reaching out to grab one of the puppies behind Kala.
The axolotl attempted to bite the claw but it proved to be like taking a bite of the air, failing to grab back the puppy who began to cry in the air.
“I wonder what it’ll be like to just…” Ula looked at the puppy that was now next to her face. “Squeeze the life out of one of these.”
With this, Kala bared her teeth and pounced onto Ula, or at least made an attempt to, for the other axolotl now found herself thrown against the wall as another shadow claw held her up.
“Part of me thought you wouldn’t do it.” Ula smiled sweetly at Kala who struggled her way out of the shadow’s grasp. “But hey, don’t worry.”
Soon enough, more shadow limbs appeared to take hold of all the axolotls including Mana. The claws wrapped around their necks and limbs before they pulled the axolotls towards the walls, but not against them as they were still on the ground. The same then happened to Kala who was initially lowered, Ula walking towards her before crouching down a level closer to Kala’s.
“I’m not going to kill them, or you, or the blue one.” Ula quietly laughed as she pet Kala’s head, the axolotl trying to bite her again before Ula roughly grabbed Kala’s face. “But I am leaving you for when father comes by. I’m sure he’ll like the taste of axolotl.”
Ula then gave a much more sinister laugh, releasing Kala from her hand before walking away and out of the room that she closed and locked behind her.
“Did they make a mess?” a voice slightly startled Ula, then being revealed to be Cordelia who had now been standing in front of Ula.
“They kind of did, but I cleaned it up.” Ula smiled at the child who gave her a thumbs up before running off into what was most likely the kitchen which was where Ula was headed towards.
“Are they sleeping?” now asked Davey who turned to look at his sisters.
“They’re still awake but I’m sure Kala’s going to settle them down in a bit.” Ula walked towards the counter, her back facing the siblings as she picked up a large kitchen knife that she admired and considered, grasping it in her hand. “Anyways, I’m going to make something now and it’s going to take me awhile. You guys don’t want to go into your rooms?”
“We’re fine.” Cordelia reassured Ula who gave a bit of a nod. “Besides, it’s fun watching you cook!”
“Well, if you insist.” Ula shrugged before turning in a swift move, then hearing as her siblings each gave a gasp of terror at the new sight in between them. “Ha ha! I got you both!”
Cordelia and Davey’s were wide as they stared at Ula’s hand that firmly held onto the kitchen knife she had now stabbed into the table, right before she drew it out and wiped it with a finger.
“You should have seen your faces.” Ula chuckled to herself before licking her lips. “Tasty, tasty terror.~”
“T-Terror?” Cordelia stammered out before turning to look at Ula who’s eyes flashed pink for less than a second. “Like, f-fear?”
“Like fear, but better. Fear is so delicious too.~” Ula giggled before she turned and faced the kitchen counter where she began cutting up some strawberries. “You guys can stop now, I was just playing.”
“Okay...right.” Davey nodded as his eyes remained glued on the spot that Ula had stabbed, his thoughts going to Ula and her preference of fear. “Um...I-”
“That reminded me o-of Schrader.” Cordelia mentioned before hearing the knife slam onto the counter, both siblings seeing how Ula now lifted her head and stared straight ahead. “When we were carving pumpkins for your birthday party, he, he would stab the knife into the ground.”
“Hm, interesting.” Ula commented before she picked up the knife and continued to cut her strawberries.
“Wh...where even is...Schrader?” Davey dared to ask, hearing as the knife was brought down to create a harsh slice before Ula turned and wiped the strawberry juices with her finger.
“Why?” she questioned as she brought her finger to her lips, licking off the strawberries.
“You guys...had fun at the party and all, and I thought-”
“He’s gone.” Ula interrupted, then slamming the knife back onto the counter which made Davey and Cordelia jump at the sound. “He left.”
“L-left?” Cordelia blinked at the sound of those words. “W-W-What do you mean he l-left?”
“He left, just like last time.” Ula released a deep breath as her siblings went from fearful and nervous to saddened.
“That can’t be right…” Davey whispered as he felt his stomach turn. It couldn’t be right, things were just starting to get better.
“Well it is. He left after giving me the car.” Ula shrugged before she turned to resume her strawberry cutting. “He said we hurt him too much, that we treated him badly and that he had enough of it.”
“No…” Cordelia shook her head. “No, no, no…”
“Yeah, so just deal with it.” Ula sighed. “I mean, maybe he’s right. Maybe we did treat him badly, right Davey?”
That was when it hit Davey; he remembered the bad things he told Schrader and how he handled him the night of the family gathering. Maybe...Schrader lied when he said he forgave him.
“Everybody gave him bad looks. Everybody judged him for leaving. But somebody had to say something to his face.” Ula continued before she turned to the side. “And I hate that somebody so much. Schrader is gone because of that somebody.”
Davey felt himself shrink before slightly turning to look at Ula, his heart dropping at the sight of her glaring at him.
“You’re the worst brother Davey, ever since mom was pregnant with you, you ruined my life.”
Davey felt himself tremble at Ula’s words, hateful phrases repeating in his mind as she glared at him with so much anger.
“And yes, Davey.” Ula completely turned her body to look at her siblings. “I do hate you.”
“But...but...b-but-”
“Oh shut up, would you?” Ula showed the knife that she held at her side, the knife gleaming under the light of the kitchen as both her siblings stared at her with mixed but all negative emotions. “Both of you are so fucking annoying!”
“Ula, let us help you!” Cordelia suggested, then flinching as Ula kicked down a chair.
“Cut the crap Cordelia! Nobody cares about your ‘Mermazing’ and ‘Sparrow’ shit!” Ula yelled as her eyes glowed pink. “Nobody cares about you! Or Davey!”
“But Ula-!”
“Shut up already!”
“Ula-” Davey started then shutting his eyes as Ula stormed towards him with her hand drawn back, ready to strike.
Davey and Cordelia both cowered before their sister who continued to glare at them until the sound of the doorbell rang, her pink eyes darting to the side before she released a deep breath.
“Go.”
“W-what?” Davey stuttered out, resulting in Ula to roll her eyes.
“Go get the fucking door!” Ula shouted at the pair who immediately got onto their feet and dashed away. Once they were what they deemed far enough from Ula, the siblings gave smalls sighs before gulping.
“I hope it’s dad.” Cordelia whispered,watching as Davey reached out to grab the doorknob that he slowly turned with a tight grip. He opened the door and the two were surprised to be met up with legs, and rather long ones.
Their eyes trailed up until they noticed crossed arms and then a stoic expression, one that surprisingly intimidated Cordelia had the situation been another. Thankfully, the crow perched on the person’s shoulder made her look a tad bit less intimidating.
“Zeta?”
“W-what are you doing here?”
“How are the two of you?”
“Um...well…” Davey whispered as he attempted to come up with an answer for the woman before him and his sister. “You see…”
“Where is your older sister?” Zeta interrupted as the kids moved away so she could walk into the house, the door shutting behind her by itself. “Neither of you are hurt, yes?”
Davey and Cordelia then shook their heads, watching Zeta crouch down so that she and the crow on her shoulder were much closer to the kids that were no doubt timorous in the moment. They saw Zeta reach a finger up to the shoulder where the crow sat, and the bird perched itself onto her finger that had now been brought to Davey’s shoulder.
“It is alright to feel scared.” Zeta whispered to them, setting the crow on Davey’s shoulder before it nuzzled into his cheek. “You three stay here while I deal with...your sister.”
“Y-you’re not g-going to hurt her, r-right?” Cordelia blurted out, feeling Zeta place a hand on her shoulder.
“Worry about yourself and your brother right now.” Zeta told her, then standing back to her full height before she felt a small hand grab hers. “What is it?”
“Did Schrader really leave?” Cordelia’s eyes were now prickled with tears she couldn’t fully contain, Zeta then giving a sigh.
“We will talk about him later.”
Zeta now made her way out of the living room and into the hallway of the house, slowing down as she heard barks come from one of the rooms. She was able to tell that the axolotls were in distress in the room they were in, but she would deal with them once the atmosphere was somewhat safer.
So, Zeta continued on her way until coming across a door with a golden doorknob that she firmly grasped before turning to open the door to the bedroom she knew belonged to Ula. She had first opened it with calmness, but then decided to swing it open before squinting her eyes upon noticing the emptiness in her room.
“Children.” Zeta called out to Davey and Cordelia who immediately made their way towards her, Schrader’s crow still perched on Davey. “Where is your father?”
“With uncle Billy.” Davey replied before he and his sister looked inside the bedroom. “Where’s Ula?”
“This is not good, it appears she has gone elsewhere.” Zeta took a final look of the room before closing the door. “Go into the axolotls’ room and untie them.”
“U-untie?” Cordelia asked. “Why are they tied up?”
“That girl did it.”
“That girl? Our sister?”
“That…that’s not our sister.” Davey whispered before Cordelia turned to him in concern.
“But...that, t-that’s Ula!”
“No, he is right.” Zeta kneeled down again before turning to Davey. “How did you figure it out?”
“She...Ula hates the taste of fear. And...she was going to hit me.”
“I am glad you noticed.” Zeta ruffled his hair, then placing each hand on the siblings’ shoulders. “Go and untie the axolotls whilst I check on something, then I will take you somewhere safe.”
_____________
“I’m sorry, who?”
“Their names are Ryder and Missy. The others, who are Missy’s offspring, are Evie and Cantarella.” explained Zeta as she typed a number into a phone, then pressing the call button before hearing as the phone rang.
“Cantarella...isn’t that somebody’s girlfriend?”
“It’s Bubbles’ girlfriend.” said Davey as he sat on a couch found inside the cabin belonging to Tilde. “I guess...our uncle Pepper was right about her.”
“Explain to me again just what is going on.” Tilde sat beside Davey who was next to Cordelia, the girl caressing a rabbit brought in by Tilde.
“The Missy lady is bad. She hurt our mom and uncles and other family.” Cordelia mumbled out while still petting the rabbit on her lap.
“Tilde.” Zeta called out to her, the woman turning to Zeta who motioned for her to come over and so she did.“Where is Cecilio?”
“I imagine the park.” Tilde scratched her head before leaning in to whisper to Zeta. “Zeta, please explain what’s going on.”
“I will explain once I talk to Lennie. I will tell him to meet me at the circus so we may have a proper discussion, and I will leave the kids here with you if it is alright.” Zeta whispered back as she now heard the phone be picked up by the mentioned clown. “Now give me a moment.”
“Of course.” Tilde nodded as she stood to the side while Zeta walked to another spot as to not worry the children that Tilde now looked at. She watched them do their own thing as they sat on the couch, both with looks of concern but also sadness which made her worry as well. Tilde did not entirely understand the situation, but she understood that there was no good coming up.
Admiring your Strength
Diabetic!Reader/The Seeds (can be read as platonic)
Warning: Some swear words, some mentions of events in the game (so spoiler)
A fill for a request: (...) I've been looking for someone to write about a diabetic reader with the seed family and how they would react if their blood sugar got low or even just reacting to the fact that the deputy is diabetic and still able to raise hell in hope county (...)
Being diabetic had never been a problem until arriving in Hope County. Here, insulin was hard to come by. The shots that you needed - unless you wanted to keel over - weren't exactly available in abundance in a place that didn't even have a proper telephone connection. At first you'd tried to scavenge for it, not wanting to admit your weakness in front of the Resistance but that plan failed when you fainted in front of Sharky, only just able to tell him that you needed insulin. After that, you never really had a problem with getting shots. Your friends looked out for you, reminding your to get your injections and always keeping something on themselves in case you forgot.
That way things worked and it wasn't an issue in raising Hell for the Project at Eden's Gate.
That was until Faith really Blissed you for the first time. Turns out that Bliss and diabetes don't mix well. Instead of leaping from the statue of the Father as Faith probably intented you collapsed upon it, vaguely aware of a lithe shape hurrying toward you as you fell. You felt Faith's slender fingers on your shoulders, in your pulse and heard her voice, once airy and unconcerned, ladden with worry as she tried to roll you over. "Oh no, Deputy, that's not supposed to happen, the Bliss shouldn't have been so strong - you can't become an Angel, you can't - he'll punish me."
"M'not becoming an Angel.", you muttered, dots dancing across your vision. You tried to raise your hand and get the syringe that you carried with you in cases of emergencies but the Bliss made you feel heavy and numb and your hand barely even lifted from the ground. "Can", you started, slurring the words, "you please give me the shot that's in my pocket?", you managed to get out. You didn't really feel Faith searching, her dainty hands so light on your frame that your fragile consciousness barely registered her touch. You did, however, feel the familiar prick on your skin as Faith punctured it, releasing insulin into your body.
You did not know how long you stayed there, on top of Joseph's statue, but Faith was still there when your senses cleared up and you regained proper control over your limbs. She stroked your hair absentmindedly, humming some surprisingly soothing Peggy tune. When you shifted, her hand slid away slowly, she didn't want to hide what she had been doing while you were pretty much out of it. "You are diabetic.", she stated softly, tilting your head at you, "Since when?"
"Oh", you answered, "For long now." Her eyes searched your face and you could see the doubt in them. "You did all this - wrought destruction upon The Father's work, all while being sick?", Faith whispered, her golden hair swaying in the breeze. You narrowed your eyes. "I'm capable of even more. That I need shots from time to time doesn't change anything.", you were tired of people underestimating you. Faith put her hands on your cheeks, capitalzing on your still groggy state to apeease you with the intimate gesture. "You misunderstand me. I was not mocking you, Deputy. I was amazed. You and your conviction are stronger than we ever realised."
You shook her off then, uncomfortable with her nearness. You didn't know why you allowed it in the first place. "Not gonna give me a speech about how my illness is God's punishment for acting against you? I'd have thought that that would be right up your alley.", you spit out, forcing yourself to remind yourself just who you were talking to. In whose lap you were lying just moments ago. Faith's eyes, light and full of life, fixed on you, shooting you a grave look.
"Oh Deputy, you are so ready to think the worst of us. You are too willing to believe the lies. Let me tell you the truth so that you may See.", she told you, smiling reassuringly - and you could see why she was called the Siren.
"No, I'm leaving.", you said, convincing yourself and struggling to get up, "I'm guessing that you'll tell your brothers about all of this?" The Herald just smiled at you. "Deputy, have Faith in me. Trust me. I'll keep your secret if you want me to. If it'll show you that we are not the fiends that we are in your mind." Yeah, right. You thought, looking around you, fruitlessly searching for a way down. How the fuck did you even get up here?
Surprisingly, Faith was truthful. Not one Seed mentioned anything about your status. Which turned out to be unfortunate for you when you made some progress in the Whitetails and were captured by Jacob's hunters for the first time.
You swam in and out of consciousness, only aware of being transported somewhere unknown. The hunters searched your pockets before strapping you to a chair and you squirmed as much as you could when they took your emergency shot, holding it up in the air.
Harsh footsteps echoed through the room and the hunter with your injection turned, lowering his head in deference to the man in front of him. It was Jacob. A mountain of a man with red hair and countless scars. He took your insulin and held it in front of your face. "Ya need that, pup?", he asked, trying to goad you. "Aren't you a weak little thing? You can't rely on some shots to keep you alive after the Collapse.", he leaned into you, breath hot against your ear, slipping the syringe into a pocket of his military jacket while he did so. "You know what happens to the weak, don't you? They get Culled.", he retreated, patting your hair roughly, as you would do to a dog. "But ya know what? I'm feeling generous. Joseph sees something in you. And I'll find out if it's actually there. So I'll humour you, pup. If you pass my trial, you can have that", he gestured toward the pocket containing your shot, "back." You stared at him hatefully, barely containing the urge to snape your teeth at him in the hope of catching his hand. If he treated you like an animal, he'd get one.
You passed his trial with flying colours (naturally). When you woke up again, the syringe was with you. And, despite Eli (who had found you) telling that you had been off the radar for days you were fine (apart from your physical injuries). The only conclusion to not being in a coma was that Jacob Seed had given you insulin while you were with him. But that just didn't seem plausible.
You tried to think of another possibility, but you really couldn't think of one. Jacob had taken care of you. As strange as it was to think that.
Some weeks later, you were captured by him once again and put into one of those cages. You barely had a chance to wake properly when Jacob was with you, telling you about his time in the Military while Staci trimmed his beard with a straight blade. Kill him, you shouted at the man in your head, but he didn't hear of course.
When that was finished, Jacob gestured for another man to step forward. He carried a needle in his hand and you shrunk away from him instinctively when the door to your cage opened, only to be grabbed by Jacob from behind, through the bars you had pressed yourself against. Even through the metall, you could feel the unforgiving heat of his solid chest. His dog tags brushed your nape, making you shudder and struggle harder. "Stay away!", you shrieked at the man, trying to use your legs to kick him away until Jacob had secured these, too. One hand rose to rest against your throat, heavy and large but not contricting.
"Hold still.", he rasped, sounding almost bored, and your body immediately responded to his command against your will. Whatever Jacob had done to you in the time that you couldn't remember, it was effective. At least when he used that tone of voice. "Good pup.", he told you when he felt the tension leave your body. His praise sent shivers down your spine. "Don't you know that sick pups need their medicine so they'll continue to be useful?", he whispered mockingly, his rough fingers stroking over your esophagus - he could easily crush your trachea with the strength in those hands. You knew it as well as he. His affections were as intimidating as they were soothing.
Momentarily distracted by Jacob, you noticed the man too late and only felt a sudden pain on your arm, where the liquid entered your system. You tried to rebel against the intrusion but Jacob's grip was sure. He held you until after the door was closed again, his beard scratching your cheek when he spoke. "This was much easier when you weren't aware of you surroundings. Calm the fuck down, pup." You ceased your resistance and he loosened his grip by a fraction.
"You're continuing to show that you can't take care of yourself - don't be surprised when I do it for ya, pup.", he explained and you bristled at the insult. The hand that wasn't on your throat squeezed your midriff. "But isn't that against your creed? Y'know 'Cull the Herd'?", you asked, tipping your head back to look at him. Up close, his eyes were even brighter and his scars more horibble. He barked a harsh laugh. "The weak get Culled, Deputy. You've proven that you're a strong puppy.", he replied, teasing you just the slightest bit to annoy you.
There was a moment of silence between you. "Why haven't you told your brothers?", you finally asked, because - honestly you had no idea. Faith kept silent because she wanted you to trust her - she wanted you to 'Walk the Path.' That you could understand. But what was stopping Jacob? Why did he not tell John and Joseph that you were diabetic (flawed) ? Jacob shifted behind you, his dog tags clinking together. "Why should I?", he countered, "It doesn't matter if I tell them or if they find out themselves. It doesn't change anything. It doesn't change who you are, pup."
"What makes you think that they'll find out?", you wanted to know, focusing on that part since you weren't sure what to say to his other statement (it had almost sounded kind, like a true compliment). His snort was genuine. "If my brothers have anything in common, it's that they are both incredibly noisy. They'll find out all about your little secret sooner or later."
He ended up being right. It was a normal day in Holland Valley and you had just done your good deed of the day, when John apprarently decided that he'd had enough of the havoc you caused in his region. He sent his people after you, persistent peggies with fucking bliss bullets. That shit fucked you up like nothing else. Something in the Bliss just seemed to make your blood-sugar drop.
Which found you bound in a chair, memories of the Whitetails filling your head - at least there was no Jacob around to fuck with your head. No, there was only Hudson, secured like you were, and a few bodies hanging from the roof like they were some sort of fancy decoration.
You had a massive headache that was only made worse when John came in, whistling something in high notes that pounded against your skull. The light in the room was only low, but even that was enough to aggrevate the pain you were in. Everything would be fine if it were only the headache, but you felt faint and your inner clock told you that you should have gotten your shot hours ago. Your blood-sugar must be basement-level by how low it was.
When John assembled his equipment for the Atonement (a freaking tattoo gun!) you tried to focus in on him, but you felt your awareness shift like sand running through your hands. He was impeccably dressed, his blue dress shirt and vest complimenting his eyes. Not one hair out of place on him. He began talking to you about his parents, how he learned of the Power of Yes and you tried to pay attention, you really did but after a certain point, you had to fight just to keep your eyes open. You could have said something, you knew, but your Pride didn't allow you. You didn't want help from John of all people.
Even if you pitied him, imagining him as a little boy, laying on the kitchen floor, bloodied and broken. John could be very charming, but of all his siblings, he seemed the most volatile and you guessed his upbringing was a big reason why.
You noticed it when he stopped talking, and cursed your body when, instead of one John, you saw two of them, bleeding together blurrily. Fighting to stay awake, your head lolled agaist the back of the chair and you knew that your eyes must be glassy. "-puty? Deputy?", he asked, his voice rising. Concerned? Afraid? It was a stark contrast to the almost playful tone he normally used (when he wasn't threatening you). "What's the matter with you?", his tattooed hands grasped your shoulders and shook you.
You barely reacted, blinking sluggishly up at him, eyes dilated and unfocused. His hands slid up over your clammy skin and he placed one on your forehead, taking your temperature. He must not have liked what he felt, his perfect eyebrows drawing together. It was weird, but his hands were almost tender. Softer than you had ever imagined the Baptist being. The comfort of his smooth cool hands on your heated skin was a sensation you could get lost in. From this angle, you could have counted the tiny freckles on John's face if you were more coherent. The thought made you want to giggle but you were already too far gone to do much of anything.
On the other side of the room Hudson was struggling, screaming into the tape on her mouth. Right, she knew about your diabetes. She'd know the reason for your state. John seemed to realise this, too, as he strode over toward her, ripping the tape off. "Rookie has diabetes, you dumbass! There should be insulin in some pocket that can help." By then, your consciousness was slipping completely.
The first thing you remembered was fingers on your cheeks. You were no longer on a chair. Instead you felt sheets beneath your lying form.
"Deputy...", a muffled murmur and the fingers travelled over your face, down your throat to curl loosely at the point where shoulder meets neck. It felt strangely possessive. You hadn't opened your eyes yet and couldn't see the speaker's face but that voice could only belong to the youngest male Seed. "What are we to do with you...", he continued lowly, talking to himself more than you. (He probably thought that you were still unconscious.) "There is something about you...you foil our plans again and again...and yet...", his fingers tightened, frustrated, but he let go of you before it could turn painful.
You heard the shuffling of feet and the unmistakeable lilt of The Father's voice. "John.", he said and you opened your eyes by a fraction, enough to see John turn his back on you to embrace his brother. They pressed their foreheads together and whispered something too quiet for you to hear. You followed John's back through slitted eyes as he left the room, leaving you alone with The Father.
He stood at a distance, wearing the same (or similiar) clothes as the day of your Cleansing when John had almost drowned you. John who just now had been as gentle to you as if you were made of glass. "You are good for him.", Joseph breathed at last and you didn't question how he knew - without looking at you, that you were awake. "He let love in his heart today when he helped you rather than watch you suffer. That is what'll save him in the end." You blushed and opened your eyes fully; there was no use pretending.
It felt weird to see him in an ordinary bedroom. Made him seem more human and less like the Father. He had a presence that made him larger than life, a quiet authority that all of his followers, even his brothers, bowed to. His dominance was effortless. And yet, his eyes were solemn and gentle when he looked at you.
You did not answer his observation, slowly sitting up in the bed and resting your head against the headboard. You weren't bound in any way. The two of you watched each other and you, not for the first time, wondered what a man like Joseph Seed must be thinking about the whole damn day. Surely, not everything could be about the Collapse. He was human. He must think silly things sometimes.
"Are you in any pain, child?", he inquired after a while, closing the distance between you with measured steps. His stance was relaxed, arms loosely at his side approaching you as if he were a concerned friend and not your enemy. Not that you could seriously harm him in your current state. You stayed silent, just looking at him through tired eyes. He reached out and placed a warm palm on your forehead to check your temperature, letting his hand linger on your skin for longer than necessary. Private space was a foreign concept to those with the name Seed.
Joseph sighed, managing to sound fondly experated. "You mustn't push yourself so, Deputy. It is alright to accept help from those who give it willingly.", he paused, his thumb delicately tracing the curve of your cheek.
"It is through suffering that we Atone - that we grow closer to God - but we are only human.", his fingers ghosted over your pulse which was fluttering wildly. You remembered the story of how Joseph squeezed the life out of his daughter all those years ago. Had his touch then been like this, soft like the beating of a bird's wings? "Your perseverance and strength are only made more extraordinary in the face of your...deficiency. But you must be so tired. Don't you see that we worry for you? That we'll accept you in our family as soon as you accept us in turn?" His blue eyes, made greenish by his lenses, held your own. You swallowed.
"Joseph.", you said and it held more emotion than you realised you were feeling. "You know that'll never happen. I'll always fight you. Whatever punishment befalls me; I'll always defends what's right. You, of all people, should understand my need to help those that depend on me. And what you're doing is wrong. Killing people cannot be God's will." His expression looked pained and the lines on his face seemed deeper. Joseph drew his hand up to the back of your head, his other joining the first as he leaned down and placed a kiss on your forehead. You closed your eyes, your face framed by his large hands.
"I will pray for you so that you may enter Eden with us.", he whispered against your skin, his beard scratching you softly. When Joseph leaned back, his features were carefully arranged to appear neutral. You thought that there was a certain sadness behind the calm depths of his eyes but you hadn't actually met The Father often enough to know for sure. "Rest now, my child." With one last look he turned and walked in the direction of the door. You had the urge to stop him but it was, once again, your Pride that kept you silent. You wouldn't know what to tell him, anyway.
Your heart felt heavy when he closed the door behind him and you noticed, with some interest, that no lock clicked. Joseph truly trusted you. And he worried. Hell, they all did. Each of the Seed had had plenty of chances to kill you or stand by as your diabetes became an issue. They had helped you. Admired your strength. It confused you as much as it made your face heat up.
And now you were left alone with your thoughts. How were you going to espace?
Parts Masterpost | Season Two - Through the Gates
“And I saw as the lamb opened the sixth seal…” Joseph starts, but Hope’s deep sigh interrupts him.
“Please, let’s skip the preaching this time, Joseph...” She says, rolling her eyes and for her surprise, Joseph complies. He cocks his head a bit higher, his eyes narrowing. He’s clearly judging her and her incapability of listening to his words.
Then he closes his eyes with a sigh, like he wants to blow out the anger from his system, and opens them up again.
“Clearly, if you didn’t come for my... ‘preaching’, then you must have a reason for being here.” Joseph says, though it’s not a question, because he knows exactly why they’re there, at his compound.
Hope looks him in the eyes, trying to figure out what to say or what to do. She should have planned ahead, but heck! How is one supposed to plan a meeting like this right after having a vision of the end of the world?
She can see Earl looking at her from the corner of her eyes, waiting for her to speak and ready to step in in any moment if needed.
She thinks for a second to what to say and comes to the conclusion that it doesn’t even matter anymore. Fuck it!
“I’m here for John... We’re not looking for a fight. So as long as you don’t try anything stupid, we won’t either.” Not the cleverest thing she ever said, that’s for sure.
John flinches at her words, looking at Joseph, waiting for a reaction from him and seemingly even more nervous then he was before. What the hell did Joseph do to him, that he fears him this much?
Meanwhile on the Father’s face a smile starts to grow. It doesn’t reach his eyes and he scoffs, anger and disappointment clear on his face.
“Yes, I heard about your...” He starts speaking before he stops, trying to find the right word to describe the two of them. “...bond. John told me all about it... well, mostly all of it.”
He looks her in the eyes with a smile, before glancing at her stomach and for a second panic starts to build up in her. He can’t possibly know, can he?! Not even John knows!
Then Joseph looks back at her eyes, clearly satisfied with her reaction, which she tries really hard to hide.
“But still... It’s ironic, don’t you think? You’re telling ME, to not do anything ‘stupid’, as you said. Meanwhile you were the one, that caused mayhem and chaos across the whole county, while I did nothing, but give you an option to stop fighting.”
She shakes her hand in anger, clenching her hand into a fist as she says.
“Listen to me, asshole! I’m not going to start this conversation with you, so how about you shut the fuck up, and just let us leave in peace, huh?! I’m sure, you’re... ‘children’ are all excited to see us get the hell out of here.”
She just proves even more how much of Wrath she is with her words, but honestly she’s done with Joseph’s bullshit of a talk and just wants to get to safety with John, Earl and Sharky before the end of the world comes.
But Joseph doesn’t let her have it, of course. Her own sin starts to build up in him as well as he points an angry finger in her way, speaking through his teeth, his words filled with venom:
“YOU... Deputy, are an insufferable person!” She scoffs at that and smiles, like yeah, is she supposed to give a fuck what he thinks about her?
“You came here, with your people. You started this whole thing, and now? NOW?! You’re trying to tell me you want to leave in peace? Is that it? Tell that to the hundreds if not thousands of people you murdered, including Faith and Jacob! You are a brat! You deny God’s plans, you cross me and my Family whenever you can. Just so you can what?! Leave in the end with my Brother? He doesn’t want to leave! He doesn’t want you plaguing his soul, you’ve done enough by making him get off the Path! You made him relive his sins, you denied him what God planned for him. So no. You are not going to leave in peace with him by your side!”
Hope blinks at him, trying to process all that he just said. She wanted to interrupt him by saying: ‘How about you let him speak for himself?’ But as Joseph continued, she felt dread in her heart. She blinks at him before muttering to him:
“Jacob’s alive.”
It’s a simple sentence and she feels a shiver crawl up on her skin as she watches Joseph’s reaction. His face looks shocked, then angry. Angry, like she never saw him before and it makes her sick in the stomach and step back a bit.
“Why did you think he was dead?” She asks, but she already knows the answer. He thought that Jacob died, because that was his plan. That was his... seal, to the prophecy he spoke about all the time, and only now does it hit her. Memories storm her as she watches Joseph clench his jaw.
“It was always going to happen this way...” Faith said before dying, ascending into the water. “I’m happy with your decision, even if not entirely." Joseph said when they found out John is alive. She thought that he meant: happy that John lived, not entirely, because she kept it a secret. But really he meant he was happy for John to live, but not entirely because she was supposed to kill him, because that's what God told him, that losing his family was the sacrifice he had to make for the Collapse to come... She didn't realize it at the time, didn't make sense of all that. But now she does and it's already too late.
"You wanted them dead." She whispers to Joseph, who doesn't deny it, just looks her in the eyes, his eyes flaming red behind the yellow tinted glasses. “You wanted them to die.”
He speaks up in return: “It was supposed to be God’s wish. But you denied their destiny.”
Hope feels disgust towards the Seed, more than she ever felt before and she pities the other siblings. She wishes she didn’t kill Faith, she wishes that she could just get rid of Joseph somehow. She wants to give him a piece of her mind, but John speaks up before her. His voice is sore, scartchy for not using it much. He walks from behind Joseph to in between the Deputy and his brother.
“Is this true?” His voice is filled with anger and hurt as he looks at his elder brother. Joseph looks from Hope to his little brother as he tilts his head back.
“It was supposed to set you free.”
“I don’t FUCKING care what it was supposed to be!” John shouts as tears gather up in his eyes. “You lied to me!”
Hope can only watch from behind John the scene and the cultists around them seem buffled by the events, no one is speaking or moving as they watch their two leaders get into a verbal fight.
“I didn’t lie to you, John-” Joseph starts, with a much calmer voice than which he used to talking to Hope.
“YES! YES, you did lie to me!” John shouts into his face, pointing a finger at his brother. “You told me we were going to be a family again! You told me we were supposed to enter your FUCKING Eden together! And now it turns out you were just as much of a liar as anyone else before! You are not better then old man Seed!”
Hope flinches as John’s hurt voice and recalls the time she read Joseph’s book about their parents. She fears he stepped a line, but not because she fears for Joseph’s feelings, hell no! But she doesn’t want Joseph’s wrath to hurt John.
“You don’t know what I sacrificed for this, all of this to become true! I sacrificed so much, for us to make God’s wish true!” Joseph answers, but John had enough of his bullshit.
“You’re crazy!” He says shaking his head and that seems to push Joseph over the line.
Events start to happen too fast, for Hope to react at first. Joseph grabs the gun from his holster and points it at her. She doesn’t have any time to move or react before he pulls the trigger. She hears the shot, but doesn’t feel any pain, and it takes her a moment to realize that John grabbed his brother’s arm and aimed the gun at the sky in time. Earl and Sharky move to cover the junior deputy, grabbing their guns and getting ready for a fight with Joseph, but they can’t get a right aim, as John and Joseph fight each other for the gun in the elder’s hand.
After a short struggle Joseph gets pushed away from John, and he almost fells to the ground, but gains his balance back. Hope tries to see everything from behind Earl and Sharky and is ready to step in if Joseph has the gun, but she watches the cult leader empty handed as he looks at his younger brother.
John aims the gun at Joseph’s head as he backs away, right next to Hope and the others. He doesn’t look away from Joseph, not even for a second, but he blindly reaches for Hope’s hand and she grabs onto him, like her life depended on it. She can feel him shaking from anger, fear and sadness. Meanwhile Joseph just stands there in front of them, defeated.
“So.... this is how it’s going to end, huh?” He asks with a sad and fake laugh.
“You did this for yourself, brother...” John almost spits the last word, no love behind the meaning of the word.
Joseph laughs at that, a mad man’s laughter, no happiness or humour behind it. He tears up, looking at John, his hair which got loose in the fight with John falling into his eyes. Then he looks at Hope and she reflexively steps back a bit, half hidden behind John. Joseph smiles at her, a sad smile.
“We were supposed to be together... You were going to be my reward for all my sufferings.” He says, no anger, just disappointment and want behind his words. She even feels like he believes what he’s saying.
“Well, you were wrong.” She responds, not even disgust in her voice, just pity for the pathetic man in front of them.
He laughs again and all of a sudden charges at them. Hope blinks as she hears the gun next to her fire. Joseph stops merely a meter away from them and looks at his brother, shocked, as if he never would have guessed that John would actually shoot him. He looks down at himself, watching blood trickle down from his abdomen, painting his clothes red.
The cultist start shouting at them, readying their weapons, but before anyone could start a fire a hellish sound welcomes them. The wind picks up and in the distance a blinding light comes to life, before taking the shape of a mushroom.
Everyone looks shocked, except for Hope and Joseph. Hope looks at the man, who in the meantime feel to his knees in front of them and they look each other in the eye:
“It is done, child.” He says pain and happiness painting his face.
Way before anyone can even react Hope grabs John’s arm, who looks at the direction of the bomb, like everyone else and she shouts at Earl and Sharky as she makes them make a run for the truck.
“LET’S GO! NOW!”
It all seems like a dream from then. Events only making their way to her mind. She sees themselves getting into the truck, Earl taking the wheele. Her radio crackles to life and she can hear Dutch’s voice telling her, shocked that she was right. She sees John looking out the window, glancing back at Joseph and his people, who all gather around him and make him sit in another car. But the cultists aren’t going for them, they’re going the exact opposite direction.
It takes them record time to get from Joseph’s compound to the Valley, to John’s bunker.
When they exit the car, they can see the whole county in flames, but they don’t stay around for too long as they all enter the bunker. Inside, a whole crowd is gathered. And while Earl starts speaking to people, searching for Jerome, discussing the events and asking how many of them are gathered inside, Sharky sits down next to a wall, trying to process the events. John stays silent, staying right at the closed door of the bunker, looking into the distance. Hope tries to process everything as well, trying to make out how many people must be inside the bunker, looking for familiar faces. Spotting Liza and Adam somewhere. Watching Jerome and Earl around kids, unfamiliar people dressed in cultist clothes. She walks between them, muttering to some people, making sure everyone is alright, before a shout comes from within the crowd.
“WHAT THE FUCK IS HE DOING HERE?!” It’s Mary May’s voice and Hope doesn’t have to guess who she is referring to.
The crowd gets a bit more silent as they all gather in a circle. She makes her way back to the door, where John stands, looking at Mary May and the others. He looks out of place, he looks lost. He stays silent, which angers the bartender ever more.
“Get him the fuck out of here! He doesn’t deserve to be in here!”
She says, before Earl and Jerome stop her from grabbing and throwing John out.
Hope makes her way to between them as she raises her hands, her voice tired as she says.
“Relax, just... everyone relax, please.”
Mary May looks at her before getting out of Earl’s and Jerome’s hold and she walks towards John with a fist ready.
Hope stands between them, grabbing her by the chest, pushing her away.
“No, Mary May, stop!”
“Stop?! Deputy, this sonuvabitch did more harm than good! Hell, no good! He’s getting out!”
Hope sighs, feeling exhausted with all the events that happened today and feeling fatigue all of a sudden. But she makes out another protest.
“He’s staying!”
The bartender looks at her, feeling hurt and betrayed as she points at John and her.
“I don’t care if you two fucked, he’s leaving!”
She sighs, getting even more dizzier than before as she pushes the woman away a bit. Mary May backs up, but she’s still ready to jump at John in any second. Meanwhile Hope almost loses her balance, but she says.
“I’m pregnant.”
It’s a simple sentence. And she already told it to a couple of people, she got used to it, but it still makes the whole crowd silent, including Mary May. It’s true she told a couple of people about the pregnancy, but she made sure others didn’t know about it, and it shows as the woman looks buffled about her sentence, just as most of the people around them.
“YOU’RE WHAT?!” She asks as he looks at her, completely forgetting about her revenge on the youngest Seed. “How?”
She makes an exhausted laugh.
“I’m sure you’re familiar with the process of getting someone pregnant.” She tries to answer with some humour, because still, in bad situations she deals with stress by making jokes.
“This isn’t funny.” Mary May even says as she looks at her. “Who’s the father?” But she already fears the junior deputy’s answer.
She would have cared more about the announcment, but with all of the events, with Joseph, the bomb, it just doesn’t matter anymore. She turns around, looking at John. She feared his reaction so much about the whole thing, but looking at him now, his fear and shock, she’s just... too... tired.
“John.” She answers, with a smile, before frowning and feeling the ground move under her feet. She panics for a second, thinking that maybe a bomb dropped right at the bunker, but then she hears John’s, Nick’s and Earl’s panicked voice as she falls to the ground. She doesn’t feel the fall and before anything can happen, she’s fast asleep.
Hope wakes up surprisingly comfortable and well rested as she opens her eyes. It takes her a moment to process and realize that she’s no longer in any of the houses of Hope County. And that no longer will she see the sunrise. But it doesn’t make her depressed. The room she’s in is luxurious as she looks around. The bed is a king sized one, with a golden silk blanket which feels like a dream to her skin. There’s a wardrobe, a desk, a couple of bookshelves in the room. There’s two doors, leading... somewhere. And a couple of paintings on the walls, and even a tv in front of the bed.
She sits up, blinking a couple of times making sure she’s awake and she’s not just dreaming about the room. Where the hell am I?
She asks in her head when one of the doors open and Liza comes into the room with a medkit. The young woman looks at her, relieved that Hope’s awake.
“Oh, thank God, you’re awake. We were worried about you, you know.” She says, but smiles as she closes the door behind her and sits in a chair next to the bed. “How are you feeling?”
Hope smiles as she answers. “Well... you know. I’m fine, just the usual. The end of the world, trying to calm down people from killing John, getting unconcious like always.”
Liza shakes her head but smiles as she gets some things ready to check up on Hope. A light to check her pupils and some other medical stuff. “Glad you still got your humour, sweetheart.”
“Can’t get rid of that, ever.” Hope responds laughing slightly, then frowns, worry clear on her face.
Liza looks at her and like she reads her mind she says:
“John’s okay... well, Mary May punched him in the face once. But still, he’s not thrown out of the bunker, so that means he’s okay.... You don’t have to worry.”
Hope smiles, thinking that yeah, John probably deserved that punch, but she’s glad people calmed down a bit.
“I should go and find him, you know we still haven’t had the pregnancy talk, sooo....” Hope says after a quick exam, but Liza gives her a warning look.
“You better stay in bed, Hope. Seriously, you should just rest and-”
But the young woman is already up and out of the bed. She’s not hurrying though, because she’s still unsteady, but she smiles at Liza.
“Nope, I’m going.”
The woman is shaking her head.
“Of course you are...”
It doesn’t take her much time to find John, he’s right out the door, sitting on a bench. When he looks up he’s surprised to see her, he probably waited for Liza to come out. He gets up quickly from the bench and walks up to Hope, grabbing her arm gently, like he’s ready to catch her if she falls down again.
“You should be in bed.” He says, worry in his voice, but a smile spread across his face.
“Yeah, well... you know me. I can’t stay put for too long.”
He chuckles lightly.
“I know... it’s annoying.”
Hope smiles at him as she answers:
“And you love it.”
She feels anxious after saying that, because the ‘i love you’ talk never happened between them either, and she bites her bottom lip, which John watches with a soft smile. The softest she thinks she ever saw him and it makes her heart race in her chest.
“I do.”
Hope smiles at that again and sighs, getting ready for The Speech.
“So...” She starts, and John nods.
“So...” He repeats her words, but both of them stay silent as they’re not sure what to say to each other.
“I was going to tell you, you know.” She says after a minute of silence. “Well... I didn’t plan to tell you like this, but... why would anything happen the way we want, huh?”
She tries joking and John nods looking at her in the eyes before glancing at her stomach. It’s still barely visible, but now that she’s out of her jacket and in a single sweater, the swell of her stomach is more visible as well.
John reaches his hand towards her, but takes his hand back when he’s just an inch close to it. She looks at him, reading his face. He looks unsure and worried. Like he fears he would hurt their child just by touching her stomach.
She holds his hand in hers, her palm over his, and she closes the space between his hand and her stomach. He huffs out the air from his lungs as he smiles, amazed just by the touch. She rests his hand there, then he starts brushing his fingers over her belly. A chuckle leaving him, and she sees tears rolling down his face.
“I’m going to be a father.” He says, as he can’t believe his statement.
“Yupp.” She says with an encouraging smile.
She watches him and feels like she could burst from the affection and love that she sees in his eyes as he watches her belly. She speaks before thinking, but not even for a second she regrets saying it:
“I love you.”
John looks up at her, yet again shocked and he laughs, tears rolling down his face and she caresses his cheeks, rubbing away the wetness on his face with a loving smile.
The moment is ruined as chewing can be heard right next to them. Both of them look to the right to see Sharky eating chips. He looks like a child who has been caught stealing cookies.
“Sorry, go on. I’m just watching here.” He says and both Hope and John starts laughing at that.
Sharky smiles at them.
“So... you told him?” Boshaw asks as he looks at his best friend and points at John with his head.
“Told me what?” John asks with a frown, but his happiness is still showing.
“I’m gonna be the Godfather.” Sharky says proudly with a grin.
John looks at him shocked, then at Hope.
“Like hell he will!”
Sharky pouts, offended:
“Heeey!”
Hope only just laughs at them as she starts walking in the corridor, with the two man behind her, arguing like children.
“Trinity! There’s no way in hell, we’re letting Boshaw be the Godfather!”
“Excuse me? I’m going to be the best godfather in the world!” He says, and his sentence is followed with a loud burp.
“This is unbeliavable!” John says facepalming.
Hope only just chuckles at the two of them before stopping as she reaches the end of the corridor and looks at the bunker with shock.
“What the...” She says amazed by the interior garden and luxurious place.
She turns around looking at John in shock, who finally looks proud of himself and his usual smug grin appears.
“Like what you see?”
Hope huffs out a laugh as she looks back at the place then turns around pointing at John:
“Are you serious??? This whole time the bunker was some luxurious ass place? And you put me in the darkest and most depressing cheap ass room when I was here?” She refers to when he got her at the Confession.
He shrugs.
“Well, I mean-” He starts but Hope punches his shoulder playfully and then smiles, looking at the crowd below, everyone seeming happy, even with the events.
John just chuckles and hugs her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulders. His hands caressing her belly while she smiles and looks at the people down there. Earl is there as he looks up and waves to her with a smile. She waves back, then sighs. It’s a sigh of relieve, one that she didn’t have in a long time. Finally she feels at peace, save and happy. Surrounded by people she loves. And just about in some months, she’ll meet someone new that she can love as well. And ironicly it’s all thanks to one person.
“John Seed...” She starts with his full name which gains her a raise of his eyebrows as he humms in question. “You are my savior.” She says with a light chuckle.
He humms with a smile as he responds.
“And you are the whole county’s, my dear.”
A/N: THE END! hahaha finally, I got to the end, and can follow up with the next season, called Through the Gates! Thanks for everyone that followed my little story and had even just a bit of interest in my ocs. ♥♥♥
Can I request a thing? Please? Sharky reacting to Dep blowing shit up but before Sharky’s personal quest. Love ya❤️
Hey, thank you for the Sharky request! I hope this is what you meant, I had a lot of fun with it! Hero isn’t my character, @kimryes was nice enough to let me borrow her for this. Go check her out!
He can see the fuckin’ fire from all the way on top of his trailer in the damn Henbane, whoever did it has earned his respect and he doesn’t even know who they are. The massive red orange flames lick at the stars, smoke billowing from somewhere over in the Holland Valley. Whoever it is, is giving John Seed absolute hell and he feels pride swelling in his chest for a person he’s never met.
He hopes it’s one of those big ugly red silo’s that John loves so much, the image of John Seed standing in front of the ruins of one the phallic shaped homages to his ego stomping his feet like the little princess he is makes Sharky chuckle to himself.
“Hell yeah, I’ll drink to that.” He says to nobody in particular as he raises his beer in the direction of the flames.
Next time it happens he and Hurk are chilling in his living room, some movie they’ve seen a thousand times is on and Hurk is recounting the story of the hot babe who got away for the seventeenth time. It’s a typical Sunday for Sharky, part of his normal routine by now and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Until he hears the sounds of an explosion outside, feels it tear through the ground as his mobile home shakes in the aftershocks.
“Hey man what the hell is goin’ on?” Hurk grumbles, throwing himself back on the couch instead of getting up to investigate. In a horror movie he would survive out of pure laziness.
Sharky shrugs and decides to check it out, because that was a gargantuan explosion and he’s really hoping it was the resistance and not some stupid ass new scheme Eden’s Gate has dreamt up. He pokes his head out the front door and his jaw drops open as he sees the smoke clouds popping up around the Henbane. There’s a sickly sweet smell in the air that makes his nose sting and gives his head a similar feeling to when he used to huff glue.
If he had to guess, someone blew up a shitton of Faith’s dumb little temple things. Part of him knows that it’s the same person from before and he can’t wait to meet him because he has some tricks up his sleeve he knows they’ll like. Besides, they can’t be setting things on fire and blowing shit up without the help of the biggest fire enthusiast in all of Hope County right? That’s just not right.
“Hurkie,” he shouts still standing in the doorway watching the flames lick at the horizon, “You gotta see this shit, man.”
With a mumbled curse and some promise that if what he is about to see isn’t totally sick then he’s gonna give Sharky a wedgie Hurk gets up and pads to the door. “Aw! Without us?” He pouts at the smoke, taking his exclusion as a personal slight, which Sharky kind of does too.
Then there’s honking out front and a shout of “Shurkie!” Letting them know that their pizza and best bro, regardless of vagitalia or penilness, has arrived.
Hero got out of the car holding three pizza and two litres of mountain dew, a balancing act that would put any juggler to shame, and headed for the door. She paused in the doorway and raised an eyebrow when neither Sharky nor Hurk moved, both of them still too entranced by the flames to care that she was there.
She swiveled her head and squinted into the distance before getting a shit eating grin on her face. “Fuckin’ beautiful isn’t it?”
Hurk snaps out of it, his eyes honing in on the pizza and mountain dew, a hunger so intense in his eyes that Hero wonders how he hasn’t started drooling. “Aw shit, the pizzas here! It’s a real party now.” He finally moves out of her way and allows her to squeeze past Sharky so she can place the pizzas on the table inside.
“Y’know who’s been settin’ shit on fire without me?” Sharky asks, finally tearing his eyes away from the flames and heading inside to get some pizza before Hurk eats it all like he always does.
She shrugs and cracks herself open a beer on the edge of the coffee table, there’s chips in the wood and scuffs from how often it’s people have cracked bottles on it’s edge. “Haven’t met them myself but Nick says it’s the Junior Deputy.”
Hurk is too busy on his third slice of pizza to answer, instead nodding enthusiastically. Sharky pouts for a minute, still upset at not being apart of the fire festivities before he nods in acceptance. “Speakin’ of, how’s the wife?”
Before she has a chance to answer Hurk is spitting half his pizza out trying to talk, “Oooh, I haven’t seen her in forever. How’s baby Hurk Jr Jr?” The Junior, Junior almost makes her choke on her slice of pizza, because they never agreed to that and they definitely were not naming their child after Hurk.
Hero winces at the reminder of her wife, she may be okay with Hurk’s strange jokes and intrusive questions and her wife could take a lot but she’d drawn the line when he’d asked her if he could try her milk when it came in. ‘Not straight from the teet o’ course, but maybe from a little mason jar, or oh! A shot glass, yeah!’ The words echoed in her head along with the image of her wife punching him in the face.
“She’s good uncomfortable as fuck. She’s with daddy right now building a crib or something.” After that she tried to steer the conversation away from her wife, knowing that if Hurk asked one more time about trying her wife’s breastmilk she’d be unable to keep herself from running him over with Maximillian. She managed to get back onto the topic of the explosions, telling Sharky and Hurk about all the good shit the Deputy had been doing for Hope County.
“You tell that Deputy if you see them that I’m the resident fire enthusiast and they better bring me along next time.” Sharky is completely serious, his brow scrunched up as he waggles his finger at his curly haired friend.
Hero holds up her hands in surrender and nods, “I got you.” After that he goes back to angrily gnawing at his pizza, though he’s happier than he was before now that he knows his best bro has his back.
A week or so later the Deputy shows up at his place, a herd of those brain dead Angel fucks hot on their heels. After taking out their followers he gives them the spiel he’s been practicing in the mirror since Hero promised to put in a good word for him, he’s a little disappointed when they decide to keep pants on but the resulting chaos definitely makes up for it. His sound system giving out is a little embarrassing but he’s a fire enthusiast, not an electrician so it’s forgivable.
When the Deputy meets him back on the roof he can’t help the way his feet move, he has to dance to get rid of some of the pent up energy inside otherwise he swears he’s gonna combust. Which would be totally cool but, if he’s gonna combust Hurk needs to be there to film it. “Call me next time you need help with the Angels!” He says, hoping that it will be sooner rather than later because being part of Rooks team is fuckin’ awesome.
“Actually,” they say, an easy grin spreading on their face, “I do need your help, but not with the angels.” They slowly turn and point at the giant eyesore that is the statue of the man-bun wearing, receding hairline wannabe Jesus. In that moment he knows they’re going to be best friends for fuckin’ life.
Bloody Timeline | Trik | Re: Sora, TERU, Joben, UL, Karl ATTN: Everyone [Especially Sora, Jet, and PM]
Once again Trik shows up to trial wearing Sen's coat, although this time he has the same slightly-too-big t-shirt on underneath that he's been wearing for most of the motive, along with a pair of jeans and his heelie sneakers. A relatively subdued look for him, overall. He doesn't go to his podium immediately, following Karl at first and touching his hand briefly, only moving around the room to his own spot after Sora has started talking.
Leaning on his podium, Trik watches with raised eyebrows as Teru just... starts a fire in the middle of the room. A few breathy giggles escape, half-hearted but still genuinely amused, but it's even funnier that no one is actually commenting on it or reacting to it much, so he just wrinkles his nose at the stench of burning rubber and switches his focus to the ones talking. Given that he'd wasted a bit of time during the investigation, he wants to hear about all the evidence found.
"Innnteresting." He murmurs, glancing between Teru, Sora, and Joben as they obligingly list off their finds. "So, so, so, so... let's see, then." Tapping a finger against his lip piercing for a moment, Trik tilts his head back and forth, he isn't smiling and doesn't seem... quite as energetic as usual, but there's still an odd airiness to his attitude, light but not dismissive so much as scattered.
[TW: Gas Effects Mention]
"Kotone is killed almost two hours before Heiwa... hmm... the lunch event... it's all such a messy mess, isn't it?" He shakes his head, letting out a sigh, "Let's try to clear this up a wee bit. First, I think... trying to figure out how the no one saw the blood trail sooner is a waste. No one did, that's all. Maybe the killer killed her sooner and moved her later but, how much sense does that make? Not a lot. Probably anyone who might have noticed was distracted or elsewhere? It's not as if we've all been in exactly our right minds recently, and who knows what other side-effects that nightmare gas may have. Hallucinogenics mess with your senses a lot~!" He claps his hands once, though the smile that should accompany this sing-song is fleeting.
[End TW]
"But! Here's the thing: outside of investigations, it's not really possible to get into someone's dorm without them letting you in, isn't it? So... all that blood that was in Heiwa's room, under the mats... and the flooded mess in his bathroom, are pretty suspicious. One of his uniforms was in a pile on the floor of his bathroom, it was soaked through with water but still smelled a lot like blood. It just seems a bit unreasonable to think it was all planted. I mean, the amount of blood there, that it was under the mats... were the mats moved and then put back over the blood puddle after whatever happened there? Why? Aaaand... Kotone's body bein' dragged all the way to the music room... obviously the killer wasn't strong enough to just carry her, so why go to all that effort? If the killer was concerned about her bein' found or connected to their dorm, they should've been careful not to leave a blood trail, or to clean it up. I think... they moved her to the music room 'cause they felt bad. She was a musician, after all. Maybe they thought putting her there was respectful, or somethin'? Woulda been more respectful not t'stab her to death in the first place, but." Trik shrugs.
"So, to lay this out... Kotone is stabbed and killed before the lunch event, we can assume her body is moved before this as well. Due to all the blood puddles and splatter, the most likely place for her to have been killed is Heiwa's Room. Heiwa himself was late to showing up to lunch, to the point he apologized about it. He pours himself a glass of water. Now... the substance used to poison him was a white powder made from crushed pills."
[TW: Suicide Mention]
"I think it's safe to assume even someone as absent-minded as Heiwa would've noticed if there was a pile of white powder in the glass he chose, so we can probably say that either the poison was added later, or he put it in himself. Let me say right off - I don't think he did it to himself. If he was planning to kill himself out of guilt or whatever, why not just tell us? Why not leave a note? Why plant a bunch o' evidence in other places? Even if Heiwa was desperate enough to have killed Kotone over the motive, he doesn't seem like enough of an asshole to have put us through this whole song and dance for no reason. No, no, no... and it wouldn't have been impulsive either, because..."
[End TW]
"Apparently, according to Jojo over there," Trik gestures to Joben, "There was a rock with similar white powder on it in the Garden. An' accordin' to Teru there were gloves with the white powder on them as well - belongin' to PM an' found in their room no less - which suggests that Heiwa's killer crushed the pills in the Garden beforehand. This must've been super pre-meditated, since the only way into the Garden is through the Kitchen. The person who did it would therefore either have to have done it way before the lunch event preparations started, or would have been one of the people helpin' make all the food, so their goin' into the Garden wouldn't seem too strange. Unless, of course, any of ya who were helpin' with lunch remembers someone passin' through durin' all your prep work? It's also suspicious that PM left right before Heiwa died, an' that they went over to Heiwa during lunch, close enough to pat him on the back. Anyone else remember that? Would've been easy for someone with a good grasp of sleight of hand to poison his glass around then... y'know, someone like a Stage Magician."
He glances over at PM, his detached, airy expression flickering into one of distaste, and then he looks pointedly away again, up at the ceiling thoughtfully.
"Really... it seems to me... the theory that Heiwa murdered Kotone, and then someone else - cough, PM, cough," - He didn't cough, he just said the word cough, slowly and clearly, not actually trying to obscure the accusation at all - "Coincidentally murdered him, makes the most sense. Someone mentioned Kotone havin' a temporary tattoo as a potential red herring, but honestly? Pretty sure that's totally unrelated. Sharky and Kotone are both friendly sweethearts, it's completely reasonable to assume they had a pleasant interaction at some point where Junji gave her some temporary tattoos and she used one. Nothin' sus there. So the only question left over, as far as I can see, is... why was there a bloody knife found in Jet's room?"
He looks down again, between Sora and Jet, a faint frown on his face. His gaze comes to rest on Sora though, since she's the one who brought up the knife.
"That's the only thing that doesn't fit. Was that knife the murder weapon? Did ya do a comparison or bring it with ya? Karl an' I couldn't find the murder weapon for Kotone, so unless someone else did, that's probably it, but I'd like to see it to make sure. I have pictures of Kotone's wound an' a pretty good eye for detail, so I'd like to see it if ya brought it. If it is the murder weapon... how'd it end up in Jet's room? That one detail could make this whole theory fall apart, 'cause if Heiwa were the killer then he'd have no way o' plantin' the knife there, he was dead by the time investigations started. Which would mean either Jet is a suspect as well - which circles right back around to the question of how that huge mess got into Heiwa's room, there's no way the culprit would've had time to plant all of that right after investigations started, it didn't take Karl an' me that long to find the blood trail - or someone else decided to try an' frame him during investigations an' put the knife there. Ughhh this is annoying. Sora, can ya show me the knife or not?"
hey hey! can i ask for 19 with resident cutie moon taeil? thank youuuuu ❤️
19. “Can I hold your hand?”
“I’m not really me,” your boyfriend says to youone day, and you’re not really surprised that you understand him. The past fewweeks have been downright weird.
First, your dog hates him. As soon as he steps into yourhouse, Sharkie goes wild, barking allover the place like a madman. And it isn’t like the playful, happy kind ofbark. It’s like how Sharkie reacts to the neighbor’s ragdoll kitten (his mortalenemy), to flying pigeons at the park, or to complete strangers. The growling,angry kind of bark.
Your boyfriend is no stranger – Sharkie used to adore him alot. Which is why you don’t understand why your dog is acting that way. You oweit all to him not being able to come over at your place as frequently asbefore. But it isn’t as if that was the only weird thing you’ve noticed abouthim.
There is also that time he forgot about his favorites. Whilearguing with the rest of your friends about where to eat for lunch, you realizeyour boyfriend isn’t pushing for the milk tea shop he always suggests. When youask him about it, you only receive a blank stare in return.
If, before, you only owe the strangeness up to the stressand pressure of being in your senior year of college, now, you don’t thinkthat’s what’s wrong with your boyfriend. Now that you thought about it moredeeply, you realize it all started after you played Spirit of the Glass withhim one bored night.
Your boyfriend either has lost his mind or has beenpossessed by a random ghost. And you’re no big believer in supernatural beings,but you’re somehow convinced it’s the latter. So the moment you confront himabout it, you’re surprised he admitted it so easily.
“What do you mean? If you’re not my boyfriend, then whoare you?”
“Taeil,” he says, looking down at his (yourboyfriend’s) fingers. “That’s the name I remember.”
“Where’s my boyfriend’s… soul, then? If you’recurrently occupying his body?” you reply, choosing your words carefully.Even you couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of your mouth.
Taeil scratches his (your boyfriend’s) head. “Honestly?I don’t know. I can’t remember much of anything. I don’t even know why I’mhere. Or how this happened. I justremember being in a really sad place. Someplace noisy. Somewhere nobody lookedhappy at all. And then the next thing I know, I’m here.”
Your ears perk up at the description. Great. It isn’t justany random ghost that entered your boyfriend’s body. It’s a freaking demon –and a pretty clueless one, at that. You open your mouth to say something, butyour throat feels like it was as dry as a desert at the moment, and no soundcould come out. After a long pause, you slam your palms down on the table –scaring Taeil at the sudden noise – with the resolve that you would do whateverit takes to get your boyfriend back in his proper body. Meanwhile, since thatstill isn’t happening, you are going to help this demon make sense of the worldwhile he’s in it.
Taeil heaves a sigh of relief at the look in your eyes, andyou almost laugh at his reaction.
“Come on,” you say, standing up and gesturing tothe buildings with a nod of your head. “We’re gonna be late for orgchem.”
“Can I hold yourhand?” he asks, scurrying to keep up with your pace.
This time, you burst into full-blown laughter. “Ofcourse!” you exclaim. “We’re dating, aren’t we? And you’re myboyfriend?”
And with a sly wink thrown his way, you grab his hand andloop your fingers together. Because while there are times he acts nothing likeyour real boyfriend, there are moments such as this one when you think he mightas well be the man you fell in love with.
A review type thing: SPOILERS ABOUND
After fifty-three hours I finally completed Far Cry 5 last night. For once I managed to play completely spoiler free. I also only paid attention to marketing enough to know that I wanted the game and hadn't ever completed a Far Cry title before, so my experience was pretty fresh. Some attempts were made to play 3, but I hated the radio tower system in that, so I was really glad to see that immediately out the window in 5.
Can't say the Resistance Points worked much better as a story gatekeeping mechanism though. It took absolutely zero effort to get them. Like sometimes I'd be wandering around minding my own business and I'd get the pop-up message that I'd freed a civilian somehow without any active intervention on my part.
Then of course came the inevitable kidnappings. I wish the game had accounted for the fact that by ten hours in I could single-handedly dispatch the entirety of whatever abduction gang the Seeds sent after me. I didn't have as much problem with getting snatched as other players, but I think we should have had the option to delay confrontations with the strength of the abduction gangs increasing as time goes on. This would be extra relevant in Jacob's region, given his whole cull the weak schtick.
But back to wishing the game accounted for things it didn't. So many times I just stood there doing nothing, because I hoped the game would accept my inaction. Leap of Faith, especially. I must have stood on that statue for fifteen minutes before realizing I had no choice but to jump off. Similarly, I crouched down in Jacob's murder-rama torture fest hoping it would just end. It didn't. Which is annoying because sometimes the game does account for failure, like if you can't shoot John down in his plane.
Speaking of John and the rest of the Seeds I feel like the developers poured all their creative effort into them and let everyone else fall by the wayside. Most of the characters in this game barely deserve to be qualified as such. They're more like hokey, boring approximations of a character. Just survive hours of being good at murder at the hands of Jacob? It's okay. You have Grace and Sharky there to talk about how Sharky vomited that one time. Need an emotional catalyst to spur you into confronting Faith? Well, a guy's gonna die. What's his name? Oh right, Virgil, he was the mayor or something I guess. What was his main point of characterization? Oh yeah he was anal about buttons for some reason. Fall's End with Pastor Jerome and Nick Rye was about as close as I got to feeling emotionally invested in the citizens of Hope County--which I think is a really big shame because the Deputy is going out there everyday and selling his soul for these people and I don't always feel like it's worth it. I was actually touched that Nick Rye names the deputy godparent to his daughter, though.
When I finally got to confronting the Father, I immediately resisted. Cue nuclear blast that was never foreshadowed for me because I could never switch radio stations. Though the backlash is hardly at the same volume, this ending kind of reminds me of Mass Effect 3. Both sequences have some weird details to pick apart. And just like I prefer some version of Indoctrination Theory, I buy into the Shared Nuclear Hallucination theory for Far Cry 5. Because otherwise I don't see the point in everything that happened before. All that self-sacrifice for nothing. I don't want to accept it. As it is, the ending just made me feel sick and hollow. I couldn't believe I'd paid $60 to feel so gross.
Without the ending, I think Far Cry 5 is a solid 8/10. With it: 7. Maybe even 6.5.
Other stuff:
-For me the game never really got around to satisfactorily answering why the townsfolk didn't just send some capable, adventurous individual to bypass cult blockades and get to the outside world. This is probably what the deputy should have done after the initial helicopter crash.
-I guess I just really like the way Ubisoft handles sniper rifles. Sniping in The Division and Far Cry 5 have both been so satisfying. I need more games I can just drop into and start sniping enemies immediately. I would have appreciated more variety in guns, though. Snipers get like four guns at most and two of them look extremely similar.
-It annoys me that literally no one in-game reacts to the deputy pulling off some dangerous, Hollywood action movie shit. Like alright, Grace, you and me and this gun for hire are going to exit this flying helicopter right before it stalls. Make sure you both have your parachutes ready, because we'll parachute to this westerly vantage point and wait for our enemies to enter our line of sight then headshot every single one of them.
-Prepper's Stashes were some of the most fun I've had in a video game in a while. One of them had me spelunking in a cave behind a waterfall, another had me grappling to a supply cache beneath a massive bridge, and yet another had me climbing a mountain.
-They did a good job at differentiating the regions. They all had their unique flavor. I originally went John > Faith > Jacob. But if I play again I'll go Faith > John > Jacob.
-I like how Ubisoft corrected a Polygon article about the endings by pretty much being like WAIT, WE DID FORESHADOW THE NUCLEAR BLAST SEE??? WE DID OUR WORK, IT'S IN THESE RADIO BROADCASTS ITS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE TO NEVER HEAR.
-I wonder what this game would have been like if it were five minutes into the future and set in multiple US locations rather than just Montana. Joseph Seed stays in Montana, but has a region similar in size to one of his siblings. Faith plays her drug trade on an old plantation in the south. John holes up on the east coast somewhere. Jacob has some sort of training center in an Alaskan hellhole so we get a snowy area. The deputy could be a rookie marshall instead of a small town cop, be more or less put in charge as the lead officer in charge of arresting the Seeds who've started a national movement, rather than a regional one.
-It’s depressing as fuck, but I would have taken a suicide ending option. As it is, I waited there while the bombs exploded. Let the fires take me as long as they’re taking Joseph Seed too. I think someone (Jacob?) even tells you that offing yourself is your best option.
-If there was ever a game in need of a non-lethal takedown route option, it’s this one. I WANT TO ARREST THE SEEDS GODDAMNIT.
How would Sidon, Revali, and Yunobo react if their Hylian s/o gave up their human form to become the race of their respective lover? Please and thank you!
To be honest, I think they’d all react very similarly. If you told them beforehand, they would all tell you that they’d love you the same, regardless of your race.
Now, I must say, there are some benefits to doing this with Sidon. First, you can now live just as long as he can, and second, bearing a child and heir to the throne just got a whole lot easier if you happen to be female.
There would be some things worth getting used to, on your part.
If you were a Rito, you’d have the flight experience of a newborn chick. Fortunately, Revali is very patient with you when teaching you how to fly, knowing that one day, you two will soar the skies together.
And then there’s eating with a beak, and remembering to nuzzle Revali instead of peck at his face when showing affection.
At least now you don’t have to wear as much clothing to stay warm.
Being a Zora is a different experience again.
Now you can breathe underwater as well as on land ?? How cool is that!
Even if you’re not the best swimmer as a Hylian, the only way you can drown as a Zora is to not move at all while completely submerged, so that’s one less thing to worry about.
Also you’re so TOL! Still not as tol as your sharky consort but STILL!
And you can hunt and chomp on fishies with your bare teeth. Now Sidon can teach you how to hunt like a Zora.
And then there’s being a Goron.
You’re now immune to hot things. You can even pick up a tray from an oven with your hands and not get burnt.
Bathing in lava feels nice instead of agonizing. Who woulda thought?
You also have more natural strength, and Yunobo must constantly remind you to be careful until you get the hang of it.
You never imagined yourself eating rocks and said rocks tasting good, but here you are.
And the best part: you are your own transportation! You can just roll somewhere if you need to get there fast. Of course, you’ll have to learn how to roll without bumping into everything on the way.
It has been a long time since Hope had such a nice sleep as she just had in John Seed's bed. Feeling the expensive comfort all night long, body and mind relaxing. Her senses being dim from the scent surrounding her through her dreams. No nightmares, no burning fields or Jacob's voice demanding her to kill. She wakes up on her own, head burried in the youngest Seed brother's pillow. Her hand stroking the fabric of it, smiling to herself.
Hope opens her eyes and yawns as she slowly sits up in the king sized bed. Her head doesn't hurt as much as it did yesterday. She rubs her eyes from the sleepiness and as she does she notices something on her wrist. She actually didn't realize she was wearing a wrist watch all along.
“What the...” She wonders as she looks down at the watch. She's not an expert, but she knows something expensive when she sees one.
She doesn't remember having it, until... Until she got into John's bunker!
“What the hell? Did he buy me a watch?” She laughs in disbelief as she look at her wrist. She shakes her head, can't believe the man did that. Yes, she mentioned it to him that she lost her watch in the Whitetails, but this? He brought her a gift? And an expensive one at the look of it.
She gets up from the bed, bare feet meeting the fine wooden floor. Even the floor feels nice, of course. She chuckles for herself as she stands up and walks toward the door which she thinks leads to the bathroom. She doesn't know what she was expecting but as she watches the door open, revealing a huge bathroom she stops at her tracks. A shower cabin in one corner of the room and a bath tub at the other. A huge ass mirror above the sink and a toilet, covered in a fluffy blue toilet seat. Luxury and money screaming off of every bit of the room. Just like everywhere else in the house.
As she steps into the bathroom she notices the bathtub, that it has jets in it.
“Oh, you’ve got to be joking.” She says as she looks at it in disbelief but with a huge smile on her face.
She starts the water, then starts looking for bath bombs or anything that she could put into the water. She opens the cabinet above the sink, the one with the mirror and she’s faced with a bunch of medical bottles.
She frowns, looking at the descriptions. Everyone is named for John, but a few of the bottles have a different name. ‘John Duncan’ and on that Hope doesn’t know how to react. Why is John’s name Duncan? Isn’t he a Seed? I thought Faith was Fake Seed…
She looks at the names of the medications: Normison, Prozac, Adderall… All kinds of drugs against insomnia, depression and anxiety? Wow, now I feel even more sorry for him. Fuck.
She looks past the medicines and she spots toothpaste and a couple of toothbrushes. She checks them, grabbing one that looks unused and start brushing her teeth. I could get used to this. She didn’t pay much attention to hygiene since she arrived in the County. And now she wanted to do everything that she didn’t have the chance of.
She feels refreshed as she puts down the toothbrush then she stops the water, that already filled up the bathtub. The young woman puts some stuff into the water, all kinds of nice smells filling the air in the bathroom. She gets out of John’s shirt and her underwear and sets it down at the sink, then she gets into the tub with a sigh.
Her muscles relaxing in the hot water she closes her eyes. As she lays there her radio crackles to life in the bedroom. She opens her eyes and listens, waits for a voice to talk to her.
“Deputy... We need to talk.”
What...the...hell... It’s Joseph Seed. Why is Joseph Seed calling her, what should she do? Hope gets out of the bath quickly, wrapping a towel around her body as she leaves wet marks on the floor while walking back into the bedroom. She looks at her radio on the bed in disbelief. He never called her. Hell, he didn’t try to talk to her since the Cleansing.
“I know you can hear me... I know you’re in my brother’s house.” His voice is calm as always, soothing and friendly. The reason why she has goosebumps all over her body. She shakily takes the radio in her hands, but doesn’t push down the button to talk. She never talked to him before, he never heard her voice.
At her silence there’s a dissappointed sigh, but not an annoyed one. He’s nothing like John. Why are you comparing him to John?
“I’ve had a vision of you last night...” The man continues and she just stands there, water dripping down from her body as she looks down at her radio in her hands. “I’ve seen what’s coming next. The Lord showed me a glimpse of the future: you standing above my brother’s corpse.”
There’s silent again and Hope mouth drops. Her heart feels heavy at those words. Just like in the voice mail, but now he said it. No metaphors or hidden clues. She thinks of John, the man that owned this house, who has the smirk of the devil. She thinks of him dead, belove her, his beautiful blue eyes turned into glassy ones. She shakes her head, closing her eyes as she tries to delete this picture out of her head.
Joseph continues on the other end as she does:
“I ask you...” He seems to search for the right words, then he exhales and continues. “I ask you to spare his life... He wasn’t always like this, he was the most loving out of all of us. He was just a boy when all those terrible things happened to him.”
Hope imagines a young boy again, crying on the kitchen floor while his parents beat him. She doesn’t notice how it affects her until a tear drops down from her face to her hand that is holding the radio.
“I know he can change, he can change through love. I’m only asking you to spare his life. You don’t need to kill him, Deputy... Please think about it.”
And with that her radio turns silent again. She stands in the room, water dripping down from her body, towel hanging around her. All kinds of thoughts run through her mind. Mostly about the so called vision of Joseph. She wonders if the Father called John about this vision as well, but she has a feeling that he didn’t.
She tries to forget about it as she puts up her underwear and her jeans, Sharky’s sweater and the denim jacket on her body with her dirty boots. It’s easier to wear the weathered clothes rather than trying to explain why she wears John Seed’s shirt.
She makes her way out to the corridor and as she looks down into the living room she smiles at the sleeping Sharky and Boomer, cuddling up on the couch. It’s a cute picture, really. She walks through a door out to the balcony and then down to another building, which she assumes is the garage.
Well, almost. As Hope enters the garage she whistles, watching the yellow plane being parked there.
“Hello, beautiful.” She smiles, running her hand long the door of the plane. She remembers John’s being a dark one, and there’s a huge text saying: ‘Rye and Sons’.
She smiles as she enters the plane, although she never in her life flew one. I learned to fly a chopper, how hard could this be?
She puts the headphone on her head and starts the engine of the plane, ready to exit the building. I didn’t die yet, that’s good. She amuses as the plane starts to roll out of the hangar, taking a turn to the airfield.
She flies into the air and starts to panic as she does. This definitely doesn’t work as a chopper. But there’s no going back.
A man’s voice comes through her radio and she tries to concentrate not falling to her death and listening to him speaking as well.
“Hey! This is Nick Rye! Who the hell are you and where do you think you’re taking my plane?! Goddamn Peggies... Wait, wait wait. Ain’t no Peggie dumb enough to pull a stunt like that... Shit, you’re that Deputy I been hearin’ about, ain’t ya?”
Hope laughs nervously as her hands shake around the control of the plane.
“Did you just call me dumb?” She laughs. “Yup, that’s me. Thought I would return your plane to you? You need it?”
Nick humms on the other end:
“Yup. You gotta bring that bird back to me. It’s our only way out of this shit storm. Now I need to make sure they didn’t mess with it. Let’s run it through some tests. Hang a sharp left at the crop circle and fly super low along the river.”
She makes the plane turn left and almost gets a heart attack.
“This thing is a lot more sensitive than a chopper!” She says panicked but manages to straighten out the plane.
“Did you ever fly a plane?” Nick asks and she laughs nervously with a ‘nope’. “Man, you’re either brave or stupid.”
Hope laughs at that nodding to herself.
“Probably both.”
The man on the other end sighs:
“Either way, you just saved my life. Hell, you saved my whole family. Peggies attacked my place just as we were fixin’ to take off good. Swiped my plane and left me to fight for my life. I’m damn near outta ammo.”
Hope takes another sharp turn to left and she feels like she’ll fly right out of the plane, bumping her head on the metal ceiling. When she manages to straighten it out and watches the river below she starts to get lower in the air. She pulls it back up when she almosts flies right into the water as Nick’s excited voice follows her, making her a bit less afraid of the flight.
“God damn! Breakin’ into John’s ranch of all places and makin’ it out in one piece. Way to show those fuckers.”
She chuckles at that, while following the river.
“Yeah, they had that coming. So I figured why the hell not.” Her voice is proud of her own actions. Though it was probably just a bold and idiotic idea.
“They must have been mystified.” Nick laughs with her. “Man, what I’d give to have seen the looks on their faces. Stupid Peggies.”
She follows the river, trying her best to not to crash as Rye continues to speak.
“That’s all they do around here. Show up at your door, like they did to me, and take whatever the hell they want. You know, I shoulda figured everythin’ would be alright. That plane’s never let a single one of us Ryes down. Don’t know what we would’ve done if we lost that plane.”
“Mhmmm...” She says as she tries her best at controlling the plane.
“You should be comin’ to a big fork in the river. Hang right.”
“Oooookay.” She says and watches for the direction. Honestly she just wants to land this thing and survive the day. She should’ve taken lessons before going off, flying around the county. And she’s not even wearing a parachute.
“Yeah, takes a certain kind of man to defend his home. Between you ‘n me, I’m not sure I fit the bill. I don’t know if you got little monsters of your own, but--”
“I’m twenty-one” She laughs, defending herself.
“Okay, but! I’m telling you, the thought of leaving mine fatherless puts the fear of God inside me. And mine ain’t even born yet.”
Hope smiles to herself. A family-oriented person, huh? That’s not a bad thing.
“If runnin’ means I can protect my family at the cost of losin’ my home, so be it. That’s the right move ain’t it?”
Hope smiles to herself, touched by how he wants his family to be safe.
“I think so, yeah. I mean I’m not a parent but I would probably do the same.”
There’s a moment of silence before Nick continues to speak:
“Still, makes my goddamn blood boil that I gotta uproot from the place my family worked so hard to put together. They earned every inch of this land with blood and sweat, and now I gotta lose it to some man-bunned little twerp and his posse of inbreeds? Fuck it!” Hope laughs so hard at that that her hand shake, making her stops as the plane moves dangerously. “You don’t mess with a Rye without it leavin’ a scar. Let’s give ‘em a long kiss goodbye, partner!”
Hope smiles at the sudden nickname, finally getting to be called something else than just ‘Deputy’ and ‘Rook’.
“I’m in it. What should I do?” She asks as she flies over a bridge.
“You should be flying over a field. Light up any Peggies you see. And if you see any Bliss tankers, blow ‘em sky high.”
Blowing things up? Now that’s a thing I really love! She flies over the field and angles the plane, starting shooting at the silo. Getting a bit too close, worried it won’t blow up she hoists the plane up a bit in the air, the silo blowing up below her.
“Woooohoooo!” She laughs, happy like a kid at Christmas’ morning.
“Joseph has his minions poisoning our water supply. Check out the irrigation reservoir or places like it, and lay waste to ‘em.”
Hope flies over a forest, being a bit more confident with the plane. Nick even compliments her on it.
“Look at you being an ace in that thing. You’re like the next Clutch Nixon! Man... he was so cool.”
The junior deputy giggles at that. She heard about the stunt man, he’s a god damn legend in Hope County, but she doesn’t think she’s anywhere near him if it comes to planes.
When she catches sight of the bliss tankers she lowers the plane a bit, shooting them all up.
“Peggies do most of their fueling just north of my runway. Take ‘em out before they get in the air.”
She looks into the distance and considers it.
“Yo, Nick! Do you have like bombs on this thing?”
She asks and Nick humms:
“Yup! See the big red button people tell you in movies to not push?”
She looks down at the controls, the button ot top of it.
“Yeah, I see it.” She replies, readying her thumb over it.
“When you’re ready, drop the bombs on top of the peggies head with pushing it down. You’ll get the hang of it.”
She waits until she reaches the field, the planes being under her and she drops the bombs. And they blow up good, she doesn’t have to do it twice. She laughs, happy of her win as Nick speaks to her again.
“If you do a nice smooth turn, it should put you on a good approach to my air strip. See ya soon!”
She turns the plane, not being as clumsy as before, but starts panicking.
‘Wait, wait, wait, wait! How the hell do I land this thing?!”
Nick hushes her, voice calm, trying to calm down the young woman.
“Now, people say landing is the hardest part, but I’ll show ya how to do it right. Just get the runway in front of you while steadily lowering your attitude.”
Not understandin professional or any language she shrieks:
“What?!” She lowers the plane a bit as she nears the air strip, trying to not die while landing.
She slows down the plane a bit as it lands on the ground, shaking her in the process.
“Umff..” She says as she rolls on the runway.
“Awesome landing, partner! Bring the plane to me. You’ll see me wavin’.”
She moves the plane toward him, trying not to crash into the man in the process. She stops the engine and gets out of the plane, thanking God that she landed safely.
“I think I’m gonna vomit!” She says, leaning on her thighs as she looks down at the ground, but she doesn’t.
“Oh my god, oh my god, look at her... Son of a bitch, you did it!” The man comes up to Hope hugging her close and she can’t help but giggle at the embrace. “You did it, thank you!”
Nick releases her and looks at the plane. He looks in the way of his house shouting:
“Kim! The plane’s back!”
A woman’s voice replies back to him:
“Yeah, I heard!”
Nick turns back to Hope and motions to the plane.
“Hey, come on, let’s turn it around. Come on, grab on!”
She does so, helping him turn the plane, though she’s not as strong as she wants to be, so Nick does most of the muscle work. The man chuckles at her:
“You know, this is the first time in a long time I feel like shit’s actually going my way. Those damn Peggies...”
When they finish turning the plane around he shouts again:
“Kim, come on!”
Nick looks at the plane:
“Please tell me they didn’t fuck with her... You know...” He turns to Hope while checking the yellow metal bird out. “This plane’s been in my family for three generations, can you believe that?”
Hope smiles at him:
“That’s awesome.”
The man shouts again to Kim:
“Kim, you coming?!”
The reply comes, annoyed:
“Yeah, I’m coming!”
Nick raises his hands and shakes his head as he walks past Hope:
“I swear, that woman sometimes... Anyway, my grandpa first got it when it got back from World War Two.“ He climbs on the yellow bird and opens the door to it. “Was his pride and joy.”
“Nick!” A shout comes from Kim.
“I made a few... modifications over the years...”
“Niiick!” Hope turns to the voice then back to the man.
“Kim would ya just hurry up?”
Hope smiles but frowns as soon as the woman replies:
“Nick! The peggies are on their way!”
Nick’s smile freezes:
“What?” As if on cue a plane flies over above them, dropping a bomb near on the forest to them. Fuck! “Those motherfuckers, they just won’t let up!”
A couple of bullets fly right into the plane, almost hitting Hope and Nick. She picks up her AR-C and looks at the man.
“Jesus Christ. Listen. I’m better in the air but you’re a fuckin’ beast on the ground. I’ll hit ‘em high you hit ‘em low, what do you say, partner?” She gives him a brofist nodding. “Horah!”
He enters the plane and Hope turns around, starting to run toward the house. Keep the pregnant woman safe, that’s a priority!
“Kim’s in the house! I’m trustin’ youy partner, keep her safe!” He says through the radio as Hope shoots the peggies outside of the house.
A worried scream comes from inside:
“Nick, Nick, Nick!”
Hope turns her beast mode on and fights herself inside, taking out every damn peggie in her way. As a cultist tries to break into a room upstairs with a bat she takes him out, while Kim inside shouts:
“Tell John Seed this is our place!” God, I already love this woman! Hope smiles to herself as she moves out of the house, standing on the porch, ready to kill anyone who dares to come near the Rye house.
“Ah, dumb move Nick. Shit, shit! Hangar, they’re at the hangar!”
Hope leaves the house, peggie free and runs to the building near it. She climbs on top of the hangar, she likes being on the high ground. Easier to hit targets.
She shoots down the ATVs and the truck, but a bullet almost flies through her, Hope takes cover on the roof. Snipers!
Nick comes to her aid though:
“Stay back. I’m gonna light up these snipers on the roof.” And he does, Hope thankful she doesn’t end up dead today.
After getting clear all of the peggies Hope goes up to the house, waiting for Nick to land. When that happens and he makes his way inside she waits outside, until the man opens the door again, suitcase in hand:
“Come on, Kim. We’re leaving.”
“No.” The pregnant woman says firmly in the back of the room.
“No?” Nick asks back, placing the suitcase on the porch. “C’mon..” He motions to Hope to help him out.
She follows him inside:
“No, this is our home.”
“Kim, you just don’t understand...”
Hope stays silent, not wanting to get between the conversation of husband and wife. Nick gives her a suitcase to hold and she does that.
“Don’t understand what? That they’re stealing our land and kidnapping our friends and God knows what else?” Kim steal the suitcase from Hope’s hands and the junior deputy stands there awkwardly, listening to them.
“Kim...”
“Nick. Your grandfather built this place. You really want to turn your back on that? And what about all the times you talked about handing off the business to our daughter?”
Hope stands next to the pair, looking from one to the other. A smile breaking her face as she listens to them. Is this how being in love feels? Cute.
“I talked about handing off the business to our son.” Hope wants to laugh at that but stops herself.
“You’ve seen the ultrasound. It’s a girl.”
The man shakes his hand:
“That was on a messy black and white TV screen. You know them things ain’t reliable.” He points at Hope in question and she widens her eyes, putting up her hands, wanting nothing with this conversation.
“Nick...” There’s a moment of silence and the man places his hand on Kim’s pregnant stomach and Hope smiles at that.
“I love you.” He says to Kim, who replies with a ‘me too’.
“Awww...” Hope says smiling at the pair, feeling like a third wheel in the moment, but enjoying their happiness.
“Well, Deputy, looks like the Rye family’s digging in. Hey, listen, if you need air support, you gimme a holler. You and me, we’ll be like Butch and Sundance.”
He seems so happy as he brings back the suitcases into the house, Kim turning to him:
“Nick, they both died at the end.”
He looks up at the woman shaking his head:
“Nah.”
Hope looks at Kim, smiling down at the woman, she takes her hands in hers and whispers:
“Please, take care of him.”
Hope nodds and mouths a silent ‘of course’. Nick stands up and looks at the woman, coming up to them and holding them both in his hug.
“Wow, sudden... but okay.” Hope giggles and starts to suffocate with Kim and they both let go of the man.
He smiles down at Hope, questioningly:
“So, partner! What’s your name?”
Hope looks at him surprised and just stands there, looking up at the man. She feels like tear are gathering in her eyes. Such a simple question, but it makes her heart warm and melt. Not only he doesn’t call her Deputy non-stop, but he also asked her name? She doesn’t get that much attention from others. Hell, she doesn’t think anyone knows her name, other than her uncle, colleges and Adam.
“Sorry.” She says, wiping down her tear, laughing. “I feel like an idiot for crying at this, just you know. Not many people treat me like... well like another human being.”
She feels small, she fears she’ll cause them to cringe, but Kim comes up to her, arms wide open and she hugs her.
“Well we do. We’re greatful for what you did to our family,...?” She looks up at Hope, which is funny, considering Hope is quite small as well.
“Hope. My name’s Trinity-Hope Johnson. But I prefer Hope.”
Kim and Nick smile at her and she feels like she’s already at home. She didn’t feel this around others. Not even Sharky, though the man is considered to be her best friend.
“Welcome to the family, Hope.”
After staying for breakfast -which she skipped while flying around the Valley- and talking to the Ryes the junior deputy leaves their house. A smile on her face she steps into the car, which she asked to borrow from Nick. When she drives to the Ranch she is surprised to find it empty. No Sharky, no Adam. She tries calling Jerome, Mary May, even the Ryes but no one answers.
Hope starts to get worried, not knowing why is the sudden silent. Then her radio crackles to life on her belt. She expects it to be Sharky or Adam explaining where they went, but the voice calling her belongs to someone else. She freezes, fear starting to build up in her. How is that every time John calls her on the open station he sounds so monotone? Cold, while speaking on the private channel he always seems to ease up a bit?
“Atonement is the final step before fully accepting The Word of the Father into your heart. Our sins - having been finally exposed - can now be removed... Freeing our souls and opening our hearts. Now, the pain of Atonement is measured by the severity of the sin... and thanks to your Deputy, the sins of this Resistance are indeed...severe. You will all Atone for what the Deputy has done. You will all welcome The Word of the Father into your hearts. You will all say Yes... Your actions have consequences, Deputy. I’ve gathered all your friends here in Fall’s End to atone for your sins.” Hope blinks a few seconds, not knowing what to do.
“You’re welcome to join us. After all, if it weren’t for you they wouldn’t be in this predicament... This is your last chance to say Yes, Deputy... Don’t be late.”
The call ends and Hope stands in the home of the man who kidnapped her friends... She wants to cry out to him from anger, but that wouldn’t help them... She looks at the answering machine on the dining table and thinks about Joseph Seed’s morning call. He saw what’s coming next. And if she has to kill John Seed to save her friends? Then so be it...
A/N: This is the watch she got from John: Vacheron Constantin Overseas Small Model.
