We extract 30 tons of materials each year to support the consumption of the average American. That’s 82kg of fuels, minerals, crops, and timber taken from the land per day to feed, clothe, comfort, and entertain each person. It's more than anyone’s fair share, and more than the planet can sustain.
But since material use and GDP are intimately linked, physical shrinking would probably bring economic shrinking. Thus, degrowth must involve reorganising society to meet people’s basic needs regardless of what happens with GDP, so the economy can decelerate justly, without the suffering recessions bring.
This sometimes causes confusion. To be clear: degrowth is not about decreasing GDP. And it’s not about reducing every person’s individual resource use (poor people might need more resources to meet their needs). Instead, it's the hypothesis that radically reducing environmental damage and carbon emissions – and making other changes in the direction of sustainability and justice – entails producing and consuming less overall. That reduction needs to focus on today’s sources of overconsumption, primarily by rich countries.
Take a hypothetical moratorium on new fossil fuel extraction. Ending fracking, drilling, and coal mining might be our best shot at saving the stable climate, and it would likely mean wealthy nations like the UK would not be able to keep expanding their economies year after year.
The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change cites studies showing that ‘only a GDP non-growth/degrowth or post-growth approach’ can limit warming to 2°C without deploying risky or imaginary ‘negative emissions technologies’. That two-degree target is the maximum global temperature increase to which human societies are thought to be capable of adapting, but there’s no guarantee that we’ll be fine if the planet warms that much. The less warming, the better our chances.
Similarly, the 2021 Nature article '1.5 °C degrowth scenarios suggest the need for new mitigation pathways' reported results from modelling pathways for stabilising the climate. It found that ‘degrowth scenarios minimize many key risks for feasibility and sustainability compared to technology-driven pathways’. Scientists are telling us that continued economic growth puts humanity’s future in question and that pinning our hopes on maintaining a growing economy by way of tech that has yet to be realised is fraught with risk. So whether degrowth sounds unreasonable or unrealistic, the facts remain. Unless we want to take a roll of the dice with our future, we need a quick transition to a smaller economy that runs on low-carbon energy.

Literally for decades one of Hans Schwippert‘s (1899-1973) designs has been on television every day: the Bundestag, Germany‘s federal parliament and arena of heated postwar political debates. Schwippert had transformed the former Paedagogic Academy into the Bundeshaus, the political center of the new capital of Germany, Bonn, and with the Bundestag designed an incunable of German architecture after WWII: transparent, elegant and with a particular sense for the detail. The latter pervades Schwippert’s entire career as he was more than „just“ an architect but also a holistic designer of furniture, fixtures and all sorts of appliances. Trained at the Technical Universities of Hannover, Darmstadt and Stuttgart, where he graduated in 1923 under Paul Schmitthenner, Schwippert from 1927 on became a key member of Rudolf Schwarz’s atelier and was involved in the Fronleichnamskirche project in Aachen. During the years of the Third Reich he taught at RWTH Aachen where in 1946 he also became full professor. A year later Schwippert was one of the major promoters of the re-establishment of the German Werkbund and naturally was elected its first president. These posts between architecture, design and cultural policy made him one of the key figures of the reconstruction of Germany, a position that the present monograph illustrates and comments on: „Hans Schwippert - Moderation des Wiederaufbaus“, edited by Gerda Breuer, Pia Mingels & Christopher Oestereich and published by Jovis Verlag in 2010, provides an all-encompassing account of the architect’s career, his architectural and design oeuvre and also his theoretical reflections. Informative essays juxtaposed with his key buildings plus a comprehensive work catalogue and the reproduction of essential texts by Schwippert round out this massive yet highly readable book. Through the countless photos and drawings included the reader receives a profound insight into his decidedly modern yet never effect-seeking architecture that is quintessential for German postwar architecture. A true reference work!

Trombone Shorty, Parking Lot Symphony
Geo’s Jazziversary Ramblings
Troy Andrews, aka Trombone Shorty released a new album earlier this year. His first on the classic Blue Note label. I finally picked it up and here’s my thoughts:
This starts out with a real New Orleans homage, a funeral style trumpet led dirge that leads us down through the dusty streets and gets you leaning over the balcony to catch the parade passing by, then there’s the moment when we get that full on soulful bank of horns. Still with that distinctive bayou flavour and incessant chattering guitar before fading to that snare and there’s Shorty, nonchalant, leaning against that balcony, sliding beautifully above the growling horns before the angels join in to “ahh-ahh-ahh” him onwards. Shorty’s music combines funk and neo-soul with a heavy dose of rock slung in for good measure. But throughout the whole thing is in distinctive that New Orleans twang.
The title track is a beauty. A funky harmonic groove that is destined to be classic neo-soul tune replete with driving handclaps, syncopated chorus and a downplayed ‘bone solo form the leader. The arrangement has an amazing downward flowing glissando vocal break that leads us out to the bar beside the parking lot, where there’s one of those classic white shirted pianists playing the chord intro to the next track. You can practically smell the Dirty Water.
Toussaint’s Here Come the Girls is a real foot stomper. Andrews' arrangements are never far from the dust and heat of New Orleans. It’s all over this album. You feel like you gotta blow it before you hit play. Trust me this is one dirty joint! You can feel those girls coming right on down the street. You just now they are heading for that Bar just off the parking lot.
Then it gets funky. I mean proper fatback style funky. Like how they used to do. Now we’re grooving. I haven’t heard horns this sharp and beats this heavy for a full thirty years! Tripped Out Slim is replete with twanging guitar covering the bar over four on the floor, hit the one bass and drums powering this over the line.
Familiar is another nod towards the Neo-Soul school, yet it’s got this menacing Tarantino horn arrangement hanging over it like something bad is surely going to happen any second. This song has some kind of menace woven through it. Shorty’s soulful joints are just that, truly soulful, but there’s a poignancy to his lyrics. Dude, nobody mightn’t learn nothing from No Good Times, but boy they surely will enjoy them. Especially when they orchestrated as soulfully as this.
You know you have got to come to a musician like Trombone Shorty open and ready to hear. I didn’t get his stuff at first. I thought he was this jazz musician and expected a standard type of trombone jazz album. My bad. Yeah, he’s a jazz musician, but he’s also a lot more. He’s an innovator, a chef of sound, with a love of his hometown. He stews neo-soul beats with Orleans horns and throws in some bare bones backbeats while he uses blue jazz chords to flavour the pot. We are so fortunate to have so many musicians willing to go somewhere new and to take us along for the ride. See Andrews has got something here that may leave the jazz purists scratching their heads, but once you get it, this is irresistible stuff. Grooves that go in a new direction leaving a dust trail behind that points firmly to their roots. With Shorty, you’re riding along in a fat Cadillac driving out of New Orleans and heading someplace new on his sonic adventure.
Check out the chattering guitar driven highway glide of Fanfare. If this was back in the day, you’d have been moving those platformed shoes, flares flying, shaking your butt, soul-training, but sadly we far too cool for this kind of raw deal. Shorty doubles on trumpet on this and the solo’s short and sweet before we back to gut wrenching funk and then the horns and drums tweet us out.
That highway vibe is continued as the slow-mo low-down police wail style horn arrangement introduces Like a Dog. Like Familiar this piece has an undeclared threat in its tone. It’s like when you see the cop’s lights in your rear-view kind of tension.
You know if I wanted to carry on this metaphor thing I could say that Laveau Dirge Finale has that clang of cuffs in its opening before it devolves to a beautiful little horn and vocal duet, but there’s still that chain-gang beat pounding behind it all. Shorty is an artist. I don’t know what he was going for with this album but I love it. That trombone choir duet thing evolves into a beautiful churchified chorus. You know you are standing at the side of that grave. The one the parade was going to at the start of the album, that had you looking over the balcony. We got there. This was an incredible little journey.
New, New Orleans from start to finish. If you haven’t got it and you looking for something to pick up, this one’s a doozy.

Blog Post #11/12: Wagner Continued and Composers under the Nazi Regime
1. It seems that the whole question of whether or not Wagner’s work should be played in Israel is not necessarily a matter of censorship, like some argue in Oestereich’s article, CLASSICAL MUSIC; Wagner, Nazis and the Israeli Soul, but it is a matter of sympathy towards those who are still alive that experienced the holocaust. The reason is because you can still buy his works and listen to them on your own time so Wagner is not being censored across the board; his work is only not being performed which I think is perfectly fine considering how Wagner’s work was used as propaganda for the Nazi Regime. I feel that once the last of the holocaust survivors have died out that will be a time when orchestras within Israel can play Wagner’s works.
2. It seems that out of all 5 composers that the most innocent of all of them was Hindemith because his work was denounced by the Nazi Regime and he fled from Nazi Germany in 1938 while von Karajan would be the most guilty of collusion because he voluntarily joined the Nazis before the annexation of Austria and did not condemn the actions of the Nazis in any way except for his marriage to Anita Gutermann who was half Jewish and it seemed as if von Karajan made his fortune through the Nazi party.
Yes there are also many parallels between these composers and the scientists we have been learning about in Dyer’s class. Most notably is how most of the composers were either against the Nazis or were just apolitical and just wanted to produce music for music’s sake. The apolitical parallel can definitely be seen between Furtwängler and Heisenberg because of how both people just wanted to do their job without much fuss. The only exception here is when Furtwängler would complain to his authorities about not being able to perform certain pieces or how Jewish or Leftists couldn’t perform in his orchestra.
