So I see you recommending Dell laptops... Not to seem hostile or anything, but what do you think of their negative reputation, if you were aware of it? The story gets passed around a lot that Dell laptops throttle their processors when on third party power supplies.
Now, I can see both sides of that issue pretty thoroughly. I don't know that I've seen it be true, although it certainly sounds that way from the warnings that Dell computers issue when you plug in a third party power supply. I also don't know that it's necessarily that bad of an idea to reduce power consumption when on a dubious power supply, as much as it might seem like an anti-competition strategy. But then again, it really does seem like an anti-competition strategy...
Just thought it might be something that you would have some interesting thoughts about, especially when you're talking about what computers to buy.
It is an anti-competition strategy! Those sorts of things are pretty common in the computing world (HP's Dynamic Security is a great example).
My answer is that it's shitty that they do that however every manufacturer out there wants to pull some shit like this and the only appropriate response is to get gud (in this case trawl forums until you find experienced users discussing the tools that they use to fix this issue).
Dell pulling this shit with power supplies isn't good, but it's also not as bad as whatever the fuck apple has going on. It's also not something that every user notices on every laptop; we sell non-oem chargers to Dell owners regularly but you just don't notice the throttling if you use the computer the way that most home-users do.
Basically I think that we all need to accept that there are varying levels of user hostility that corporations are going to try to get away with and that your purchases and engagement with a brand should be driven by what level of that you're willing to put up with and what level of that you're willing to work around. A regular user might be willing to put up with this from Dell because they're unlikely to notice the problem. I would be willing to put up with this because I know I can break it. A regular user might be willing to put up with bloatware from Lenovo because they aren't aware that it's bullshit. I am willing to put up with bloatware from Lenovo because the first thing I do with any new computer is rip out everything I don't want.
The real answer, the answer that nobody likes, is to become a weird linux guy and evangelize for open source software and hardware hacking at every opportunity.
Being the weird linux guy doesn't serve most users, though.
(I do have a fair number of weird linux guy posts, but the specs post is for people who are are significantly less tech literate)

A Comprehensive Guide to Purchasing Car Parts Online: Tips and Tricks
The convenience and low cost of purchasing auto components online have made this vehicle maintenance and repair method a popular choice among modern car owners. But finding your way around the enormous internet marketplace for auto parts can be challenging. This post will give you some basic pointers when you purchase car parts online.
Know Your Vehicle's Details
Get to know your vehicle inside and out before you begin searching to purchase car parts online. The year, model, manufacturer, and kind of engine are all part of this. The search filters of many online car parts suppliers require this information to match you with the relevant items. Additionally helpful is having your vehicle's identification number (VIN) on hand, as it records your vehicle's detailed specs.
Research and Compare Retailers
Online stores offering auto parts are plentiful, and you may find a wide variety of brands, pricing, and levels of customer care at each one. It's a good idea to check out several sites to compare pricing and read reviews from other customers. You may learn much about a store's credibility and trustworthiness by checking with the Better Business Bureau.
Get to Know the Parts' Details and Their Quality
You can't just purchase car parts online. Although they tend to be pricier, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts manufactured by the car's maker ensure a flawless fit and optimal performance. Different manufacturers create aftermarket parts, meaning their quality and price points can differ. Some aftermarket components are high quality, and some must be up to scratch. Ensure you get a high-quality part by checking its specs and reading reviews.
Check for Compatibility
Verifying the part's compatibility with your vehicle is an essential first step when you purchase car parts online. Verify the part number matches your car's specifications. Even though compatibility checkers are available at many internet retailers, it's wise to check with your owner's handbook or a mechanic, just in case.
Find the Return Policy and Warranties
For added peace of mind and protection against flaws, look for warranties on parts sold by reputable online sellers. Be sure to read the return policy thoroughly before buying anything. A reasonable return policy is of the utmost importance in the event that you receive a damaged or incorrectly ordered part. Know that there may be a restocking fee and certain return conditions.
Think About How Much and How Long It Will Take to Ship
There is a wide range of stores regarding shipping charges and delivery dates. Even if you find a lower price on a part, you might not be able to justify the high shipping costs if certain companies provide free shipping above a particular threshold. You should also consider the delivery time, mainly if the part is an emergency when you purchase car parts online. You can get fast shipping choices from several stores for a little extra money.
Conclusion
When you learn about your options and adhere to these guidelines, buying auto parts online may be a practical and economical choice. For a good purchase, it's important to know your vehicle's characteristics, compare vendors, grasp part specs, and check for warranties and return policies. By using these tactics to keep your car in top shape, you may avoid the trouble of going to a brick-and-mortar store.

Writeup: AOpen i945GMm-HL shenanigans
AOpen i945GMm-HL - The Retro Web
Welp. This board is weirder than I ever thought it'd be. Not the board in general, but the specific one I bought.
To begin, it turns out that my particular board, and likely many others of the same model, are OEM-customized boards that AOpen provided to a little company called RM Education. They make all-in-one PCs for the UK market.
...And they are using evaluation BIOSes (in other words, BIOS software that's normally only meant for prototyping and... well, evaluation) in their retail boards.
My specific board contains BIOS version R1.08, which is actually R1.02 apparently. There is evidence of an R1.07 existing as well from a reddit thread on the r/buildapc subreddit, but I doubt that it's been dumped anywhere.
Moving on to the original point of this writeup, I got this board because I wanted to build a system that pushed the 32-bit Core Duo T2700 as far as possible, meaning I needed a mobile-on-desktop board. AOpen built a reputation for doing this sorta stuff in the 2000s, so I went ahead and picked one of their boards for use (although I would've much preferred using the top of the line AOpen i975Xa-YDG instead if it were being sold anywhere. That's a VERY tasty looking board with its full size DIMM slots and SLI-compatible dual PCIe x16 slots and ability to crank the FSB all the way to 305MHz).
Slightly surprisingly, the Core Duo T2700 is quite the overclocker! It's able to push from 2.3GHz all the way up to 2.7GHz with some FSB overclocking using the SetFSB tool. It's multiplier-locked to a range from 6.0 to 14.0, so I can only push it through this means.
The board I'm using, the AOpen i945GMm-HL, supports running the FSB up to 195MHz. It's okay-ish in terms of stability, but crashes when running Aida64 benchmarks unless I loosen the memory timings from the 5-5-5-15 settings that it uses at 333MHz to 5-6-6-18, which is just the tiniest bit faster than its stock settings for 400MHz operation by SPD. With these settings, it's much more stable and is able to run the benchmarks, though unless I lower the FSB from 195MHz to 190, it will consistently crash Chrome when trying to play Youtube videos on integrated graphics. I'll likely experiment some to see if adding a card capable of handling the video playback in hardware helps.
For now, this is all for this blog post. I'll follow-up with more details as they come in reblogs. As follows are the specs of the system:
AOpen i945GMm-HL (OC'ed from 166MHz FSB to 195MHz, 190MHz for more stability)
Intel Core Duo T2700 @ 2.7GHz (OC'ed from 2.3GHz)
2x 2GB Crucial DDR2 SO-DIMMs @ 5-6-6-18 timings
Some random 40GB Hitachi hdd lol
Windows XP Pro SP3, fully updated via LegacyUpdate
Supermium Browser (fork of Google Chrome and the reason why I was able to test Youtube playback in the first place)
Coming up: Installing One-Core-API and Java 21 to play Minecraft 1.21 on a 32-bit system out of spite for Microsoft "dropping support" for 32-bit CPUs.

The general idea is that at a later point the OEM Kayaba shock will be replaced by a higher spec item. (Most likely a Wilbers 641, but also a Hyperpro 461 TR09-1AA or a Bitubo CLU unit (all fully adjustable in low/high speed compression) or lower spec Bitubo XZE or an YSS MZ456 shocks (each w.o. compression damping adjustment) may come on the map.) The needle bearings of the suspension need inspection (and most likely replacement) anyway. Cleaned and adjusted the shock anyway.
Still puzzled on why the previous owner had set the compression of the OEM item to fully closed (tension damping only half a turn from fully closed) and also the forked compression and tension both fully closed? Is it not a general idea that the suspension items should work by actually being able to move instead of just jumping around from bump to bump on the streets? 🤣

A radioactive camera reported stolen in Houston over the weekend is still missing, a spokesperson for Statewide Maintenance Company said this morning.
A SPEC-150 radiographic camera was reported stolen by Statewide Maintenance Company last week. The Houston Office of Emergency Management and the Texas Department of State Health Services is assisting in recovering the device.
Statewide Maintenance Company announced in a release that they are offering a reward for the camera's return.
"The material is sealed within multiple layers of protection, and the risk of exposure is very low," OEM officials wrote in a release over the weekend. The department also wrote that the levels of radiation outside the camera are not dangerous.
The 53-pound camera was last in the area of a Taco Cabana in North Houston on March 9.
Radiography cameras are used to see problems in devices that are not visible to the naked eye. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, industrial radiography can be useful because it does not damage or change the item being tested. It can be used to test gas and oil pipelines, metal welding, boilers, vehicle parts and aircraft parts,
OEM officials said if anyone finds the camera, they should not try and open it and should either call emergency services or the DSHA 24-hour phone line at 512-458-7460.

July 8th | Mexico | You actually handed money over for this job...
Daniel from IAS Labs dropped me an email about updating his 1975 Brasilia and its front suspension. He used the word "hacked" in his initial email. I wasn't ready for the pictures that came back.
If ANY experience, for reference, I have 21+ years, resonates with you, head this warning. If you hire someone and you don't vet their work, you could actually hand money over for this kind of work. Please, don't risk your life or the lives around you even thinking of driving around the streets with so many issues. Please.
With that said, Daniel asked for the PRO's expertise on what it would update this Brasilia and bring safety, enjoyment, and quality of ride, back to the forefront of this Classic VW. The Answer. The Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam.
With the vehicle having cosmic wheels and the current 5" narrowed beam, Daniel was having rubbing problem on the inner fenderwells and he also did not like how much it tucked inside the fenders. We opted to do the 2" narrowed version to check as many boxes as possible. Here are the specs on the beam;
Stage 2 PRObuilt Air Ride Ball Joint Beam Complete - 2203
The BEST way to add Air Ride to a Classic Volkswagen Type 1 with ball joint front suspension (1966 through 1977), is by installing a Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam. When the PRO's say complete, they mean complete. You will not need anything in addition to this assembly. The Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam is built on the Ultimate Beam platform. It's made in stock width and up to four inches narrower than OEM to allow for wider wheels, drop spindles, and disc brakes, that add track width. The complete beam comes as you see it, spindle to spindle, with an entire PRObuilt steering system installed and ready to bolt in and go.
What's included? This Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam is spindle to spindle, built in any configuration, from stock to four inch narrowed. It comes powder-coated, satin black, ready to install. The front end comes complete with the following;
New Ultimate Adjustable Beam
Through Rods
New Tie rods
New Air Ride Shocks
New Drum Drop Spindles (CB Performance/EMPI) or OEM Spindles
New Steering Dampener
New Hardware
New Grease Zerks
Premium Tie rod Ends
Premium Ball Joints
PRObuilt Steering Box filled with Corn Head Grease
Reconditioned pitman/drop arm/clamp
PRObuilt Control Arms
New eccentrics
What's recommended?
When it comes to how narrow you need, check out this article here. The PRO's recommend a FOUR Inch narrowed for most applications as it allows for just about any wheel to fit and tuck under the fenders.
If you are going for the dropped look and want to run either Airkewld's GEN 2 Disc Brake kit or your factory drums opt for the DRUM Drop Spindles. If you keep your Factory Disc Brakes (4 lug), opt for the DISC Drop Spindles. If you are keeping the drop moderate, a stock height spindle for the drum or factory disc is available. If you want to run the disc brakes you already have, click here.
Install kit (saves time, ensuring you have everything needed to do the job right) New beam bolts, upper and lower body pads, and inspection plate) .
If you want to make this beam install even more complete, maybe installing a GEN 2 Disc Brake kit might make sense. To have the PRO's install them, you will need to add the labor to do that here, then choose your disc brake kit here.
You will need an Air Management Kit (AMK) to lift and lower the vehicle on demand. If you are only doing front air ride, you can use a 2 valve AMK and use one valve per corner. This will eliminate sway left to right when turning. Trust me. If you are going to do full air ride, then the 4 valve AMK is what you need. (If you decide to use a different manufacture for air management, the PRO's will be UNABLE to tech support any issues you have as we will be unable to replicate the issue in house).
If your steering coupler from your column to your steering box has seen better days, the PRO's suggest the OEM PRObuilt Steering Box Coupler found here.
Kewl Features
American made
7.5 inches of up-and-down movement
Taller shock towers allow for the use of shocks that will work with any ride height adjustment
Industries finest packaging to ensure it will arrive to you unscathed
FAQ
Do I need to do body mods to install this beam? No. The inside dimension is 29 13/16". That gives a clearance of 1/16" on each side.
How do you narrow the beam 4" when I only have 1/2 inch on each side of my stock beam? We utilize the outer ends of the tubes and gusset outwards to give us the needed space. Here is a video that explains it.
Do I need to send in a core? No. The PRO's have a few options for your cores. Check them out here.
Will I need anything in addition to this assembly? No. It's as complete as it comes from the factory.
The front end will be coated apart and assembled to keep the clean look with new hardware. It's set to the medium height setting so that you can adjust it to your liking. It's pre-greased, and alignment will set in a rough application for shipping.
Financing is available during checkout.
What do you think of the old beam build and what do you think of the new beam build?

Verdict after restoring the T509 Speed Triple Mk3 to factory specs: Nah. The OEM engine mapping is way too lean, resulting in a jerky ride below 3k revs. The cure: Exhaust (street legal, but less restrictive than stock), new mapping, 520 chain with larger rear sprocket. Much better, although some minor tweaks might still be needed.

Oh hey since you just reblogged a post about this, can I get some tech advice? I have two old Dell laptops that are running slow bc (I suspect) dell has some chip installed that can tell if the charger is Dell brand and throttles the cpu if not. And they have since stopped recognizing their chargers. If I install linux, will that fix the issue? Or is it a hardware problem?
So there's not really a way that Dell can do that but realistically the computers are probably just running slow because they're old (5 years is the usable time we estimate for business laptops; after that they may continue *working* but they'll likely be too slow for our customers to consider them good work computers without some significant upgrades). But if they aren't recognizing the chargers there are 3 possibilities I can think of off the top of my head:
1 - It's a battery issue, not a charger issue. Over time batteries fail and will stop holding a charge no matter how long they're plugged in. The solution to this is to replace the battery, which you can usually do for between 20-45USD on amazon
2 - It's a charger issue. Your AC adapters may have both independently failed, it's possible! Low-cost non-OEM chargers often don't have particularly long lifespans, and replacing them may be the way to fix this.
Second possible charger issue is that it may be the wrong power level for the batteries. Sometimes you might look up something like "Lenovo e15 charger" and you'll see one that looks right but it turns out you've ordered a 45w instead of a 90w, and that is a pretty big problem. You need to make sure you're getting something with the exact specs for your specific computer. Here's an article about it.
3 - It's a charging port issue. This is one of the more common problems we see on older computers; basically over time with enough plugging and unplugging the port that connects your charger to the motherboard comes loose. This is something that can be a relatively cheap and easy fix in some cases, or a really difficult fix if the thing is soldered directly to the board. Here's a video of someone replacing the charging port on a Dell Laptop for a general idea of what kind of work might be involved in fixing this.
Okay! Now for some basic troubleshooting! Please test for the following:
If the computers don't power on at all while the AC adapter is plugged in then the issue is either the AC adapter or the power port.
If the computers power on while plugged in but they don't hold a charge, the issue is the battery.
If the battery holds a charge for some amount of time (over an hour) but takes forever to charge, then the problem is that you aren't using the correct AC adapter.
If the battery doesn't charge, the computer doesn't come on, and it's the correct AC adapter you can possibly test the adapter with a voltmeter, test the adapter on another computer with the same power requirements, or disassemble the computer and check the power port connection to the motherboard.
But yeah if the computers are powering on at all, right off the top of my head I'd guess either it's a battery issue or a voltage issue with the adapter.
Linux would not help at all with those issues (though hopefully you've got someplace to start looking to resolve those problems now), but if your computer is running slow because it has older hardware that was designed for a different era of computer use (which can be as recent as 5 or so years ago depending on the specs) then a Linux install will likely help. Though keep in mind that if you do an OS swap you will not be able to run any of the programs you currently have for those laptops on those laptops. I think that Linux is good and want more people to use it generally, but I recommend Linux to new Linux users primarily when the computer they're thinking of installing it on is used mostly as a web browsing machine. An old computer with Linux Lite will generally run faster than an old computer with Windows, but if you're trying to get the old computer to play modern games it isn't going to be fast with either OS.

Smart Shopping: What to Avoid When Buying Car Spares Online in India
A great way to save time and work in India is to purchase car spares online. There are many online places that sell different kinds of car parts, so it's easy to find what you need. But you can't always depend on what you buy online; some of it might even hurt you more than help. To help you avoid making expensive mistakes, here is a list of things to watch out for when purchasing car spares online India. Always check the items you buy to make sure they are good for your car. It won't need more repairs than you thought.
For a low price, copies of OEM parts
It can be tempting to buy the cheapest car spares, but don't. Stay away from fake parts that aren't made by well-known names. It might look like a good deal to buy some of these OEM copies that are very cheap, but they wear out quickly and don't always work right. This might hurt other parts of your car or make it less safe. Instead, it's better to buy OEM or high-quality parts that you know will last longer.
Electrical Parts from Unknown Sellers
Sensors and alternators are two very important electrical parts of your car that make it run well. You shouldn't buy electronics parts from people you haven't checked out or don't know. Putting cheap electrical parts in your car can cause the electrical system to malfunction, which could cost a lot to fix or even cause the car to break down. Use well-known names and read reviews from other customers to be sure the electrical parts you buy online are safe and will work.
Used parts that don't come with a guarantee
Getting used car parts might seem like a good deal, but you should never do that without being sure. You might get a broken part that needs to be replaced soon after installation if you don't get good claims. When you buy used parts, make sure they come with a promise or a way to return them. In that case, you should buy new parts to avoid having to fix things and spending money you don't need to.
Car parts that don't fit
Before you buy car spares online India, make sure it will fit the make and model of your car. A lot of online stores sell parts that look like they'll fit your car but don't. It can hurt or even put you in danger to use parts that don't go together. To make sure the part will fit and work properly, look over the specs one more time and, if necessary, get help from a professional engineer.
Finally
You should be aware of what to avoid when buying car spares online. It's best not to buy fake parts that are cheap, electrical parts that haven't been checked, used parts that don't come with a warranty, or parts that won't fit your car. Be careful and only buy from people you know and trust to keep your car in good shape and avoid having to pay a lot for repairs. Choose Autoverse for buying car parts online.

New Post has been published on https://www.vividracing.com/blog/novitec-mclaren-750s-aero-and-performance-program/
Novitec McLaren 750S Aero and Performance Program
Novitec is one of the leading aftermarket refinement specialists for cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren. With worldwide notoriety for their aesthetically pleasing aerodynamic upgrades and performance parts, they have just released their full program for the new McLaren 750s. The McLaren 750s is the successor to McLaren’s first true production supercar, the 720s/765LT models. Having such strong experience in building products for the McLaren originating with the 570s platform, Novitec has created this extensive range of upgrades for the 750s. When Novitec engineers undergo a new chassis to develop cars, they typically purchase 3 of the same vehicles so they can simultaneously work on the product upgrades without having down time for needed testing or development.
The McLaren 750s already comes with 740hp from its V8 twin turbocharged engine. To continue to increase power of previous models, McLaren engineers have to work on improving the cooling system to handle the performance gains in an efficient manner. With the success of the McLaren aftermarket showing how some basic bolt-ons and tuning can take the 720 or 765 to over 1000 horsepower, the 750s has nothing to worry about. Novitec has already made extensive increases in the form of 3 different stages. When all said and done, the Novitec McLaren 750s produces 840hp and 889nm of torque running 0-60 in just 2.6 seconds!
Novitec has become internet sensations with their N-Largo kits for the McLaren, Ferrari, and Lamborghini cars. These limited production packages make the exterior even more fascinating and improved than in its stock form. For the McLaren 750s, Novitec gives the front of the vehicle a striking facelift with an exposed structure carbon headlight inserts and a sportier front end with their front lip spoiler. The Sides of the 750s are enhanced with carbon housings for the mirrors and new rocker panels to keep the beautiful lines of the McLaren body. Novitec also gives a new N-Largo trunk lid and carbon trim for the air intakes to round out their aero package. Their tailor-made aerodynamic components are actually wind tunnel tested and designed to match the OEM exterior finishes. This includes unique forged carbon and standard twill carbon fiber finishes.
