So I see you recommending Dell laptops... Not to seem hostile or anything, but what do you think of their negative reputation, if you were aware of it? The story gets passed around a lot that Dell laptops throttle their processors when on third party power supplies.
Now, I can see both sides of that issue pretty thoroughly. I don't know that I've seen it be true, although it certainly sounds that way from the warnings that Dell computers issue when you plug in a third party power supply. I also don't know that it's necessarily that bad of an idea to reduce power consumption when on a dubious power supply, as much as it might seem like an anti-competition strategy. But then again, it really does seem like an anti-competition strategy...
Just thought it might be something that you would have some interesting thoughts about, especially when you're talking about what computers to buy.
It is an anti-competition strategy! Those sorts of things are pretty common in the computing world (HP's Dynamic Security is a great example).
My answer is that it's shitty that they do that however every manufacturer out there wants to pull some shit like this and the only appropriate response is to get gud (in this case trawl forums until you find experienced users discussing the tools that they use to fix this issue).
Dell pulling this shit with power supplies isn't good, but it's also not as bad as whatever the fuck apple has going on. It's also not something that every user notices on every laptop; we sell non-oem chargers to Dell owners regularly but you just don't notice the throttling if you use the computer the way that most home-users do.
Basically I think that we all need to accept that there are varying levels of user hostility that corporations are going to try to get away with and that your purchases and engagement with a brand should be driven by what level of that you're willing to put up with and what level of that you're willing to work around. A regular user might be willing to put up with this from Dell because they're unlikely to notice the problem. I would be willing to put up with this because I know I can break it. A regular user might be willing to put up with bloatware from Lenovo because they aren't aware that it's bullshit. I am willing to put up with bloatware from Lenovo because the first thing I do with any new computer is rip out everything I don't want.
The real answer, the answer that nobody likes, is to become a weird linux guy and evangelize for open source software and hardware hacking at every opportunity.
Being the weird linux guy doesn't serve most users, though.
(I do have a fair number of weird linux guy posts, but the specs post is for people who are are significantly less tech literate)

the final configuration of stickers on my gigging laptop, in service 2021 - 2024.
in the hopes that I'd eventually be able to get a decent laptop just for gigs, I saved up a cache of stickers from 2013 forward to apply toward a modern[1] laptop I could hopefully use for many years. though I was able to make it happen eight years later in 2021, the particular laptop has unfortunately proven too unreliable to truly fulfill that destiny. it was a lemon out of the gate (bad motherboard, intermittent crashes) and sadly continues to exhibit similar (though less frequent) behavior even after warranty repair[2]. it's just not cut out for the task (or for any use case requiring reliability).
I'll be rehoming as many of these stickers as I can salvage, which will, of course, be challenging. having taken inventory, I'm lucky to have discovered extra copies of some I'd previously thought near-irreplaceable. the new laptop I've obtained to replace this one is smaller, so even those I can salvage or replace aren't guaranteed to make it over.
here's to this particular collage of stickers, most of which were saved up for eight years prior to application and saw gigs from coast to coast, but will never be the same again.
---
[1] I used a low-spec, enterprise-decomissioned Lenovo ThinkPad X201 with no battery until 2020.
[2] they also stole my OEM charger, sending me back a shitty, barely-functional third-party "equivalent" that further hampered the laptop's reliability. Acer support is literally Big Bill Hell's. Bad_Luck_Fale_FUCK_EM.gif

Writeup: AOpen i945GMm-HL shenanigans
AOpen i945GMm-HL - The Retro Web
Welp. This board is weirder than I ever thought it'd be. Not the board in general, but the specific one I bought.
To begin, it turns out that my particular board, and likely many others of the same model, are OEM-customized boards that AOpen provided to a little company called RM Education. They make all-in-one PCs for the UK market.
...And they are using evaluation BIOSes (in other words, BIOS software that's normally only meant for prototyping and... well, evaluation) in their retail boards.
My specific board contains BIOS version R1.08, which is actually R1.02 apparently. There is evidence of an R1.07 existing as well from a reddit thread on the r/buildapc subreddit, but I doubt that it's been dumped anywhere.
Moving on to the original point of this writeup, I got this board because I wanted to build a system that pushed the 32-bit Core Duo T2700 as far as possible, meaning I needed a mobile-on-desktop board. AOpen built a reputation for doing this sorta stuff in the 2000s, so I went ahead and picked one of their boards for use (although I would've much preferred using the top of the line AOpen i975Xa-YDG instead if it were being sold anywhere. That's a VERY tasty looking board with its full size DIMM slots and SLI-compatible dual PCIe x16 slots and ability to crank the FSB all the way to 305MHz).
Slightly surprisingly, the Core Duo T2700 is quite the overclocker! It's able to push from 2.3GHz all the way up to 2.7GHz with some FSB overclocking using the SetFSB tool. It's multiplier-locked to a range from 6.0 to 14.0, so I can only push it through this means.
The board I'm using, the AOpen i945GMm-HL, supports running the FSB up to 195MHz. It's okay-ish in terms of stability, but crashes when running Aida64 benchmarks unless I loosen the memory timings from the 5-5-5-15 settings that it uses at 333MHz to 5-6-6-18, which is just the tiniest bit faster than its stock settings for 400MHz operation by SPD. With these settings, it's much more stable and is able to run the benchmarks, though unless I lower the FSB from 195MHz to 190, it will consistently crash Chrome when trying to play Youtube videos on integrated graphics. I'll likely experiment some to see if adding a card capable of handling the video playback in hardware helps.
For now, this is all for this blog post. I'll follow-up with more details as they come in reblogs. As follows are the specs of the system:
AOpen i945GMm-HL (OC'ed from 166MHz FSB to 195MHz, 190MHz for more stability)
Intel Core Duo T2700 @ 2.7GHz (OC'ed from 2.3GHz)
2x 2GB Crucial DDR2 SO-DIMMs @ 5-6-6-18 timings
Some random 40GB Hitachi hdd lol
Windows XP Pro SP3, fully updated via LegacyUpdate
Supermium Browser (fork of Google Chrome and the reason why I was able to test Youtube playback in the first place)
Coming up: Installing One-Core-API and Java 21 to play Minecraft 1.21 on a 32-bit system out of spite for Microsoft "dropping support" for 32-bit CPUs.

The general idea is that at a later point the OEM Kayaba shock will be replaced by a higher spec item. (Most likely a Wilbers 641, but also a Hyperpro 461 TR09-1AA or a Bitubo CLU unit (all fully adjustable in low/high speed compression) or lower spec Bitubo XZE or an YSS MZ456 shocks (each w.o. compression damping adjustment) may come on the map.) The needle bearings of the suspension need inspection (and most likely replacement) anyway. Cleaned and adjusted the shock anyway.
Still puzzled on why the previous owner had set the compression of the OEM item to fully closed (tension damping only half a turn from fully closed) and also the forked compression and tension both fully closed? Is it not a general idea that the suspension items should work by actually being able to move instead of just jumping around from bump to bump on the streets? 🤣

A radioactive camera reported stolen in Houston over the weekend is still missing, a spokesperson for Statewide Maintenance Company said this morning.
A SPEC-150 radiographic camera was reported stolen by Statewide Maintenance Company last week. The Houston Office of Emergency Management and the Texas Department of State Health Services is assisting in recovering the device.
Statewide Maintenance Company announced in a release that they are offering a reward for the camera's return.
"The material is sealed within multiple layers of protection, and the risk of exposure is very low," OEM officials wrote in a release over the weekend. The department also wrote that the levels of radiation outside the camera are not dangerous.
The 53-pound camera was last in the area of a Taco Cabana in North Houston on March 9.
Radiography cameras are used to see problems in devices that are not visible to the naked eye. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, industrial radiography can be useful because it does not damage or change the item being tested. It can be used to test gas and oil pipelines, metal welding, boilers, vehicle parts and aircraft parts,
OEM officials said if anyone finds the camera, they should not try and open it and should either call emergency services or the DSHA 24-hour phone line at 512-458-7460.

July 8th | Mexico | You actually handed money over for this job...
Daniel from IAS Labs dropped me an email about updating his 1975 Brasilia and its front suspension. He used the word "hacked" in his initial email. I wasn't ready for the pictures that came back.
If ANY experience, for reference, I have 21+ years, resonates with you, head this warning. If you hire someone and you don't vet their work, you could actually hand money over for this kind of work. Please, don't risk your life or the lives around you even thinking of driving around the streets with so many issues. Please.
With that said, Daniel asked for the PRO's expertise on what it would update this Brasilia and bring safety, enjoyment, and quality of ride, back to the forefront of this Classic VW. The Answer. The Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam.
With the vehicle having cosmic wheels and the current 5" narrowed beam, Daniel was having rubbing problem on the inner fenderwells and he also did not like how much it tucked inside the fenders. We opted to do the 2" narrowed version to check as many boxes as possible. Here are the specs on the beam;
Stage 2 PRObuilt Air Ride Ball Joint Beam Complete - 2203
The BEST way to add Air Ride to a Classic Volkswagen Type 1 with ball joint front suspension (1966 through 1977), is by installing a Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam. When the PRO's say complete, they mean complete. You will not need anything in addition to this assembly. The Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam is built on the Ultimate Beam platform. It's made in stock width and up to four inches narrower than OEM to allow for wider wheels, drop spindles, and disc brakes, that add track width. The complete beam comes as you see it, spindle to spindle, with an entire PRObuilt steering system installed and ready to bolt in and go.
What's included? This Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam is spindle to spindle, built in any configuration, from stock to four inch narrowed. It comes powder-coated, satin black, ready to install. The front end comes complete with the following;
New Ultimate Adjustable Beam
Through Rods
New Tie rods
New Air Ride Shocks
New Drum Drop Spindles (CB Performance/EMPI) or OEM Spindles
New Steering Dampener
New Hardware
New Grease Zerks
Premium Tie rod Ends
Premium Ball Joints
PRObuilt Steering Box filled with Corn Head Grease
Reconditioned pitman/drop arm/clamp
PRObuilt Control Arms
New eccentrics
What's recommended?
When it comes to how narrow you need, check out this article here. The PRO's recommend a FOUR Inch narrowed for most applications as it allows for just about any wheel to fit and tuck under the fenders.
If you are going for the dropped look and want to run either Airkewld's GEN 2 Disc Brake kit or your factory drums opt for the DRUM Drop Spindles. If you keep your Factory Disc Brakes (4 lug), opt for the DISC Drop Spindles. If you are keeping the drop moderate, a stock height spindle for the drum or factory disc is available. If you want to run the disc brakes you already have, click here.
Install kit (saves time, ensuring you have everything needed to do the job right) New beam bolts, upper and lower body pads, and inspection plate) .
If you want to make this beam install even more complete, maybe installing a GEN 2 Disc Brake kit might make sense. To have the PRO's install them, you will need to add the labor to do that here, then choose your disc brake kit here.
You will need an Air Management Kit (AMK) to lift and lower the vehicle on demand. If you are only doing front air ride, you can use a 2 valve AMK and use one valve per corner. This will eliminate sway left to right when turning. Trust me. If you are going to do full air ride, then the 4 valve AMK is what you need. (If you decide to use a different manufacture for air management, the PRO's will be UNABLE to tech support any issues you have as we will be unable to replicate the issue in house).
If your steering coupler from your column to your steering box has seen better days, the PRO's suggest the OEM PRObuilt Steering Box Coupler found here.
Kewl Features
American made
7.5 inches of up-and-down movement
Taller shock towers allow for the use of shocks that will work with any ride height adjustment
Industries finest packaging to ensure it will arrive to you unscathed
FAQ
Do I need to do body mods to install this beam? No. The inside dimension is 29 13/16". That gives a clearance of 1/16" on each side.
How do you narrow the beam 4" when I only have 1/2 inch on each side of my stock beam? We utilize the outer ends of the tubes and gusset outwards to give us the needed space. Here is a video that explains it.
Do I need to send in a core? No. The PRO's have a few options for your cores. Check them out here.
Will I need anything in addition to this assembly? No. It's as complete as it comes from the factory.
The front end will be coated apart and assembled to keep the clean look with new hardware. It's set to the medium height setting so that you can adjust it to your liking. It's pre-greased, and alignment will set in a rough application for shipping.
Financing is available during checkout.
What do you think of the old beam build and what do you think of the new beam build?

Verdict after restoring the T509 Speed Triple Mk3 to factory specs: Nah. The OEM engine mapping is way too lean, resulting in a jerky ride below 3k revs. The cure: Exhaust (street legal, but less restrictive than stock), new mapping, 520 chain with larger rear sprocket. Much better, although some minor tweaks might still be needed.

Common Mistakes When Buying Car Parts Online and How to Avoid Them
You can save time and money by shopping for car spares parts online India. But easy mistakes do happen and take long time, money, and work hard. You can easily get through this process if you don't make these mistakes and follow these tips to make the best choices.
Not Verifying Part Connection
Not making sure the parts will fit your car is one of the worst things you can do when you buy them online. Different car types from the same year may have different specs, so a part that looks the same may not work. Make sure you read the product description carefully every time to avoid this. Please type in your car's make, model, and year, and then compare the part number to it. Online stores in India that you can trust that sell car parts often have compatibility checks on the product pages. Use these.
Disregarding seller reviews and reputation
Indian online shops sell many car parts, so it's simple to pick the cheapest one without looking at the store's name. You might get fake or low-quality parts if you buy from sellers who aren't known or have low reviews. Check out the seller's scores, reviews, and how many sales they've had. Many people have said good things about the quality and accuracy of the parts sold by these sellers.
Ignoring warranty and return rules
People often need to read the return and guarantee rules, which can cost them a lot of money if the part doesn't fit or work. It's important to know how to return items and that the seller guarantees the parts before you buy them. Car spares parts online India that cost a lot of money need this more than most. If the return and guarantee rules are good, you can get your money back or a new part if the old one breaks.
Prioritizing price over quality
It may be tempting to pick the cheapest option, but that could mean getting things that could be better and breaking quickly. It would help if you cared most about quality, especially important parts like brakes, the frame, or the engine. The parts from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) are more likely to work well and last a long time.
Ignoring shipping prices and times
When buy car spare parts online India, they often forget how much it will cost to ship and when it will arrive. Even if some parts are cheaper, the shipping costs will be more than enough to cover the difference. Fixes that take too long to arrive can also cause extra trouble and take longer than needed.
Conclusion
It's easy and gives you access to buy a wide range of car spare parts online India. But you can have a good shopping experience if you don't do common things like not checking to see if the items will fit together, not looking at the seller's picture, only looking at the price, and not knowing how much shipping will cost. Be smart about your choices and learn as much as possible to maximize your money. With this method, your car will always run well, and you won't have any problems in the future.

Oh hey since you just reblogged a post about this, can I get some tech advice? I have two old Dell laptops that are running slow bc (I suspect) dell has some chip installed that can tell if the charger is Dell brand and throttles the cpu if not. And they have since stopped recognizing their chargers. If I install linux, will that fix the issue? Or is it a hardware problem?
So there's not really a way that Dell can do that but realistically the computers are probably just running slow because they're old (5 years is the usable time we estimate for business laptops; after that they may continue *working* but they'll likely be too slow for our customers to consider them good work computers without some significant upgrades). But if they aren't recognizing the chargers there are 3 possibilities I can think of off the top of my head:
1 - It's a battery issue, not a charger issue. Over time batteries fail and will stop holding a charge no matter how long they're plugged in. The solution to this is to replace the battery, which you can usually do for between 20-45USD on amazon
2 - It's a charger issue. Your AC adapters may have both independently failed, it's possible! Low-cost non-OEM chargers often don't have particularly long lifespans, and replacing them may be the way to fix this.
Second possible charger issue is that it may be the wrong power level for the batteries. Sometimes you might look up something like "Lenovo e15 charger" and you'll see one that looks right but it turns out you've ordered a 45w instead of a 90w, and that is a pretty big problem. You need to make sure you're getting something with the exact specs for your specific computer. Here's an article about it.
3 - It's a charging port issue. This is one of the more common problems we see on older computers; basically over time with enough plugging and unplugging the port that connects your charger to the motherboard comes loose. This is something that can be a relatively cheap and easy fix in some cases, or a really difficult fix if the thing is soldered directly to the board. Here's a video of someone replacing the charging port on a Dell Laptop for a general idea of what kind of work might be involved in fixing this.
Okay! Now for some basic troubleshooting! Please test for the following:
If the computers don't power on at all while the AC adapter is plugged in then the issue is either the AC adapter or the power port.
If the computers power on while plugged in but they don't hold a charge, the issue is the battery.
If the battery holds a charge for some amount of time (over an hour) but takes forever to charge, then the problem is that you aren't using the correct AC adapter.
If the battery doesn't charge, the computer doesn't come on, and it's the correct AC adapter you can possibly test the adapter with a voltmeter, test the adapter on another computer with the same power requirements, or disassemble the computer and check the power port connection to the motherboard.
But yeah if the computers are powering on at all, right off the top of my head I'd guess either it's a battery issue or a voltage issue with the adapter.
Linux would not help at all with those issues (though hopefully you've got someplace to start looking to resolve those problems now), but if your computer is running slow because it has older hardware that was designed for a different era of computer use (which can be as recent as 5 or so years ago depending on the specs) then a Linux install will likely help. Though keep in mind that if you do an OS swap you will not be able to run any of the programs you currently have for those laptops on those laptops. I think that Linux is good and want more people to use it generally, but I recommend Linux to new Linux users primarily when the computer they're thinking of installing it on is used mostly as a web browsing machine. An old computer with Linux Lite will generally run faster than an old computer with Windows, but if you're trying to get the old computer to play modern games it isn't going to be fast with either OS.

WARNING: Hard boiling Xiaomi/
Yup that's a very controversial title but let me explain. Also it's not COMPLETELY shit you'll see.
So the begining
Basically, my old phone died recently. So rest in peace Samsung Galaxy J6 2018 Custom rommed that did a boot loop he never recover from-
So the thing is I destroyed my wallet and bought a new one. Saw good reviews online, so came to a store and chose it. First mistake.
The first shit
So it's a Xiaomi Redmi Note 13. It's a pretty decent phone in term of specs with cool cpu and 8GB of RAM and 256 of ROM… Like it's OKAY. It came with MiUI. Which is basically their own OS.
I immediately updated to HyperOS, which was the new version of MiUI. After that i just… used it like a normal person UNTIL!
The day i got ads for changing my wallpaper.
I changed. My wallpaper. By the way it was a drawing of Atlas my beloved moth Squidinu i love you kfjddjfdkfjdkf
So like… Opened Google photo, selected it, got "Set as wallpaper" and then SURPRISE M.THER F.CKER. (Was for temu btw)
I was like "bro what" Cause' i thought i had opened something weird or anything well NOPE The app was "Themes". Then it just randomly closed that's an issue too.
So! Opened settings, got in "Themes and look" THEN SURPRISE ANOTHER AD!
Useless to add that, for some reason, THEMES WHERE PAID. EVERYTHING IN THIS (duck) (butt) APP STORE WAS 1€. (Nope it's not made by Electronics Arts.)
I said (duck) off imma made my own one. So downloaded KLWP (which is some cool app to make custom animated wallpapers and stuff) and enabled it. Didn't work. Why? AUTHORIZATION """""refused""""" for my """"""security""""""
We're talking about reading the number of notifications i have.
So yea that didn't work either.
So, duh, imma try to remove the bloatware.
Spoiler i can't it just says "nuh uh" and pops out some random error.
XDA forums.
So! Since this thing was going to kill me! I decided i should install a GSI! (Cause' for some reason no custom roms were out yet you'll see why later)
SO! Unlocked OEM, Check Installed SHIZUKU, Check Downloaded LeafOS, Check Bootloader unlocked, HUH OH! NUH UUH!!
Usually to unlock the bootloader, you have to use a app for Microsoft Windows, which is already a problem since i use linux and i can only imagine what kind of things OSX (Mac) users have to go through, then you plug it in, open fastboot, (Which is an mode on android that allows you to edit partitions using commands) and then "Error! unauthorized!"
Well the issue was easy, i had to open settings and link my developer account to the phone to unlock bootloader!
The result: Nope.
I think you might have expected it but that didn't worked. At all.
The page in settings shows up some error in Chinese. Which apparently translated (Thanks Gemini) says something like "You need to validate your account on community app"
So i tried.
Installed the VERY sketchy "Mi !NEW HOME! Community App" (that's the actual name on the G Play store.) and logged in, settings, "Unlock boot loader".
Yup… Umm…
"You… " erm. "You have to wait until 8/8 (mm/dd) at 00:00 (UTC+8) to try again."
So i did.
"You have to wait until 8/9 (mm/dd) at 00:00 (UTC+8) to try again."
…Seriously?
Waited 2 days. For nothing.
You see why nobody makes custom rom? Cause' xiaomi is so buggy that you can't even unlock boot loader with THEIR OWN TOOLS.
Honestly, i'm not the kind of person to usually roast something like this, but… Seriously. I didn't even mentioned the translation errors everywhere, the app icons, the bloatware… Even the whole OS looks like ripped off Apple iOS!
So yea. Sorry Xiaomi but right now, i hate you.
So i'll try again tonight and check if that works, even if right now i need a tall buff guy to hug me from behind and hold me in place so i dont use PSI Teleport ß into their office and kill everyone using Sharpshooter and Ricoshots. (P rank)

Introducing Amuse 2.0 Beta with AMD XDNA Super Resolution
Tumblr media
Amuse 2.0 Beta
One of the most common applications of generative AI is AI image generation, and an AI PC experience wouldn’t be complete without it. Stability AI, a leader in this sector, developed stable diffusion models, which are used for the majority of this local picture production. There are many programs, GUIs, code blocks, and command lines available to run stable diffusion models on artificial intelligence (AI) computers; however, they are usually quite difficult to install, need a high level of technical expertise to operate, and might not have the best performance for your machine.
To provide users of AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series processors and Radeon RX 7000 Series graphics cards with a seamless, user-friendly, and optimised end-user experience, AMD has teamed up with TensorStack, a New Zealand-based AI technology startup.
Amuse 2.0.0 is a simple-to-install tool with no dependencies and a “Ez Mode” user interface that streamlines the process of configuring all the necessary settings to get your AI image creation off to a speedy start. In order to accelerate and double the output size at the conclusion of the image generating stage, it also has an AMD XDNA Super Resolution solution.
A few essential components are:
No need for a command line
Straightforward and simple to use
AMD XDNA High Definition
Just one executable
Absence of dependencies
Automatic setup and model choice
Apply Paint to Image
Sketching to Visualise
Make custom AI filters.
Multi-stage pipeline based on ONNX (Control Nets, Feature Extractors, Stable Diffusion)
Download Amuse 2.0 Beta
Your device is automatically detected and configured by Amuse 2.0.0 Beta. Below are the official suggested system specs for integrated and discrete solutions:
AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processors that have at least 24GB of RAM
CPUs from the AMD Ryzen 8040 series with 32GB of RAM (AMD XDNA Super Resolution requires the most recent OEM MCDM and NPU driver update).
Graphics Cards in the Radeon RX 7000 Series
The first time you launch Amuse, the installation procedure will be as simple as it is for any other software, and you should finally see the window below. The AMD XDNA Super Resolution toggle will automatically be checked if the application was successful in detecting an AMD XDNA NPU. Currently, Ryzen AI 300 Series and Ryzen 8000 Series CPUs (with the necessary OEM driver update) are the only AMD product family members that are officially supported by AMD XDNA Super Resolution.
AMD strongly advise choosing the “Balanced” setting if you are new to using stable diffusion as it offers an excellent balance between quality and performance. The program generates an image using a 512×512 canvas (square aspect ratio) in the first instance, and then uses the AMD XDNA architecture-powered super resolution solution to produce a clear, 1024×1024 image.
AMD believe that the ability for everyone to become an artist or graphic designer thanks to AI PCs is one of the most revolutionary AI experiences. In the AI PC future, creativity will have no boundaries, and Amuse Design and AI Filters make that possible. Amuse therefore has you covered whether you are an expert content creator or just someone who wants to create pictures for fun.
Additionally, you can use the “AI Filters” drawer to make your own AI filters and use generative AI to alter the appearance and feel of pre-existing photos. Naturally, all of this is made possible by the strength of AMD Ryzen AI and Radeon graphics, and it all happens entirely locally.
